HANDS ON FUN AT ROCKPOOL SCHOOL For an exciting way to learn about sea life, let your children pay a visit to Rockpool School
B
est described as an attractive sea aquarium, a rockpool is an oasis at low tide for small sea-life creatures. Crabs, starfish, sea snails and many more marine species call rockpools home, and they are a fascinating environment to watch and study. Rockpools are an exciting way for children to learn about some of our sea life, but they can be quite hard to find. So, with this in mind, we are pleased to introduce you to a brand new Rockpool School, right here in the heart of North Tyneside, allowing children to experience first-hand the wonderful creatures and sea life that call rockpools home. Rockpool School was establish in March 2017 by Nicola Everitt who, after seeing the pure joy and excitement on children's faces who live so close to the coast but never manage to experience rockpool animals first-hand, saw an ideal opportunity to give them that chance. She established the school (which is ran by locally qualified Marine Biologists) to give local children a hands on rockpool animal fun and learning experience, offering workshops, birthday parties and school visits. Nicola herself, has always been interested in our seas and everything within them, and regards herself extremely lucky to be in the process of completing her PhD in Marine Science. She has been very honoured to have been able to carry out cetacean research, offshore wind farm
10
research and possible impacts on surrounding marine life. She has also been able to work with, and train, both seals and sea lions. She is therefore very passionate to be able to share what she has learnt in a fun and educational manner. Sessions provided by Nicola are tailored to individual needs and workshop type, and include a variety of rockpool animals, including crabs, starfish, brittle stars, urchins, sea snails, hermit crabs and anemones. The individuals not only gain a hands on learning experience, they also learn amazing facts about these animals. She can tailor each workshop to every occasion, this may also include crafts, making of marine slime, crab lining, decorating treasure chests with sea glass and shells and many more. The school has already inspired many children to further their learning on this topic, with some even going on to attend Marine Biology Summer schools. The school has quickly earned a fantastic reputation, receiving 5 star rating from both schools and satisfied parents. Comments have included ‘very likely to recommend these session’, ‘very satisfied and would use the service again’, ‘children 100% benefit from the workshops’, ‘very pleasant staff and appropriate speak for the children's age’, ‘brilliantly interactive and hands on’. For more details about the school and upcoming events, visit www.rockpoolschool.co.uk or facebook. com/rockpoolschool or call Nicola on 07704 336457.

MORPETH FAIR DAY MORPETH AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF TRADE’S ANNUAL FLAGSHIP EVENT HAS ATTRACTIONS FOR ALL THE FAMILY TO ENJOY!
SUNDAY 11TH JUNE 2017
M
orpeth fair day has been a key attraction for thousands of visitors to Morpeth for approximately 30 years, and this year is set to be another fantastic day, with attractions for all the family to enjoy! The fair is the Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade’s annual flagship event, and regularly attracts over 30,000 visitors to the town. With plenty of entertainment, interesting stalls, displays, games, rides and activities, there is something for visitors of all ages to enjoy throughout the day. The fair officially opens at 10am with a main stage opening ceremony, closely followed by the children’s fun run which is open to all children in year 8 and below. Registration is from 9:30am at the Newgate Street Food Court Marquee on Fair Day with the race starting at 10.15am from the Main Stag. Every child who finishes the race will receive a goody bag and certificate and there is a free Morpeth Harriers membership to leading finishers (who are not already members). Turners Funfair will be taking up their usual spot on Newmarket, providing rides, thrills and attractions. Turners have a family history of managing fairground attractions going back nine generations, to the 18th century! The Turner family were the operators and managers of the fairground at Seaburn. Keith Turner’s father, Walker Turner, was responsible for the building of the big dipper at Seaburn, which opened in 1955, and was renowned for his skills in this field. The Morpeth Fair Day Parade is also a big highlight of the day and a great opportunity to see classic cars
12
and bikes. The parade will start at 11:45am and follow its usual route through Morpeth to the Stanners, where visitors can see the cars and bikes displayed. A great attraction for car and bike enthusiasts! The Stanners will also be hosting Morpeth Fair Day’s first dog show. Raven Rivers Dog Training Company is coordinating this exciting event, which will consist of eight categories: Most Endearing, Most Gorgeous Golden Oldie, Cutest Puppy (up to a year), Loveliest Lady Dog, Most Fabulous Fella, Judge's Own Favourite, Best Junior Dog Handler. Entry forms will be available for completion on the day, and will need to be completed at least one hour before the event, but the earlier the better. Contestants will be charged £1 per entry for each category and all monies will go to charity. There will be rosettes and goodie bags available for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each category and a best in show prize and rosette. The Newgate Street Food Court is also returning this year, with a wide array of food options from breakfast, to pizza, to noodles. All with a comfortable seating area to share and enjoy your food with family and friends throughout the day. For more information, and to keep up to date with what is happening, where to park, and more, visit www. morpethfairday.co.uk or check out their Facebook and Twitter pages. They can’t wait to see you on Sunday 11th June, 10am – 4:30pm! Don’t forget to share your photos and let them know what you enjoy about Morpeth Fair Day.

TAKE A PEEK AT PACKHORSE YARD Set just off Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, Packhorse Yard is home to a fine selection of local independent retailers.
D
avid Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us "We couldn't be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June last year. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we approach our first anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future." The yard is home to half a dozen units, all bringing something unique to the town. The first shop along the alleyway is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June 2017 the shop will be celebrating its first birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www. jandjmodels.co.uk, or follow them on facebook. The yard is also home to Willow Home & Gift, an independent, family run gift shop where you can discover a wide selection of affordable and unique gifts anything from a handmade piece of glassware to a gift for a mischievous mutt, they’ve got everything covered. The store is passionate about supporting UK designers/makers, and stock a variety of locally designed or produced products, so you are sure to find something a little different that won't break the bank either. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful
antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. Finally, Lateral Art, owned by Stephen and Fiona Greenway, sells artists materials from great brands that are often hard to find on the high street, as well as a wide range of artist’s papers and decorative and wrapping papers. The art range is accompanied by notebooks and journals from Leuchtturm 1917, Moleskine and Fabriano as well as Frenchic Furniture Paints and Decopatch papers, models and glues. The store wants to support local artists and run a monthly art competition. Visit www.lateralart.co.uk for further details. In an extension to the shop, The Lateral Art Studio allows the pair to offer classes in drawing and watercolour in the heart of Morpeth. The Studio is compact and allows small groups to get maximum benefit from sessions. They hope to grow their range of courses and welcome other artists, who may want to deliver courses, to use the studio. During the week, for a small hourly charge, the space is made available to local artists who just need a space to work or even just browse through their selection of art and craft books for inspiration. On Saturdays, and during school holidays, the Studio is used to provide drop-in sessions for all ages to enjoy the range of Decopatch products that the shop sells, visitors just choose their model and then use the Studio and its range of papers and glues to create a unique item to take home, or of course they can buy the materials to take home. Lateral Art can also provide Decopatch birthday party sets to give a creative alternative to party activities. Contact Stephen or Fiona if you are interested in attending or running classes or using the Studio on info@lateralart.co.uk So, next time you are in Morpeth, make sure you make time to venture off Newgate Street and explore the wonderful, unique, independent businesses in this wonderful setting.

BEAUTY REVIEW
LOOK YOUNGER & MORE RADIANT WITH A NEW TREATMENT AT HÀNA BEAUTY CLINIC Dawn Wilson tries out the innovative Guinot Hydraderm Cellular Energy Machine, a new addition to the acclaimed Hàna Beauty Clinic in Whitley Bay.
I
t’s perfectly natural to want to look as youthful as you feel inside. It is also important to know you have anti-ageing options that don’t involve surgery, expense or pain. Hydraderm Cellular Energy facials are an alternative to aesthetic medicine, such as Botox or fillers, with its range of anti-ageing, clinically proven treatments using a combination of Dynamic Ionisation, Thermal Energy and Lifting Stimulation. I was invited along to Hàna Beauty Clinic by Emma, the salon owner, to try this innovative new treatment. The clinic has yet again been awarded the status of Guinot Crown Salon 2017. This coveted title celebrates the highest achieving Guinot salons and spas in the UK and Ireland who demonstrate success, dedication and loyalty to the brand. By visiting a Crown Salon, clients can be confident that they are choosing a Guinot salon of the highest distinction with flawless principles in environment, customer care and treatment expertise, so I knew I was in good hands! My treatment began with a consultation on any issues I had with my skin, so Emma could target these areas. I have combination skin, but some really dry patches on my cheeks due to cold weather and central heating. Emma then left me to remove my top and lie on the bed, covering myself with a towel. She then began with a soothing welcome massage around neck and shoulders, followed by a thorough Cleanse and exfoliation. Next was the first step using the cellular energy machine, where Emma applied bespoke serum gels to my face, eyes, neck and décolleté. The gels were then massaged into my skin using metal rollers. Emma mentioned that I may feel a tiny little charge of electricity over more sensitive areas, however I felt nothing except the tiniest sensation under my nose, not remotely painful. These electrical charges cause the serums to be pushed into the skin and the current (dynamic ionisation) causes 'chaos ' within the cells waking them up, helping to regenerate and plump up the skin. The lift part of the facial is next, with lymphatic 22
drainage to remove toxins from the skin. Emma used the machine to stimulate my facial muscles, which tones and lifts muscles (this part can be done as a facial on its own as an intensive non-surgical face lift course). I could really feel my muscles contracting, so I knew it must be working! The final step was perfect for decongesting my skin, increasing the circulation and increasing energy within the cells, in other words giving me a real boost! Oxygenating cream was massaged into the skin with heated 'mini iron ' using thermal energy. This step was really soothing. Finally, Emma cleansed off all the products applied an eye and firming face mask, whilst giving me a soothing hand and arm massage.

Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested!
Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! I'm still feeling the after effects a few days later, much longer than I've felt before from a facial. The cost of the facial I received was £92, and definitely worth the money, but prices start from as little as £50 for the Lift Facial, and they can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I would recommend giving the girls at Hana a call and they can advise you as to the best option for you. A course of treatments is advised for long lasting results, but a one off can be booked if you need a pick me up. (although I guarantee you'll be so pleased with how your skin looks and feels you'll really want to book more!) ACUPUNCTURE IN MORPETH Ferris Jerjis reflects On Chinese medicine in Morpeth
I
n classical Chinese medicine, health is viewed as a reflection of your harmony with the surroundings. How you relate to yourself, the people around you and the environment. And how you pace yourself in your everyday interactions. I practice acupuncture in Morpeth and Newcastle in strongly contrasting environments. There is a lovely community feel to my work in Morpeth. The pace of interaction on even a busy clinic day is somehow made more gentle by many personal touches. I have been working in Morpeth for ten years now, getting to know the town and its people. People share more in Morpeth, be it memories of holidays, talk of family, or even thoughtful gifts. When people are open and linked in to their community it makes it easier to talk about the elements of self care that are promoted within Chinese medicine. Health is enhanced by links to the environment, with the people around you as well as through exercise and nutrition, both of which are also linked to the environment you live in. Chinese medicine is composed of five parts: • acupuncture • herbal medicine • tui na (Chinese massage), • therapeutic exercise (such as tai chi or chi kung) • dietary therapy Practitioners will often specialise in one, while being able to advise on the others, offering a holistic view of wellbeing. I have practiced in acupuncture since 1998. In my Newcastle clinic I work with experts in herbs, tui na and other practices. I also teach chi kung in Newcastle. I practice acupuncture at Watson House, Morpeth, on a Wednesday. For more information about what I do, and others I work with visit: www.watson-housemorpeth.co.uk or www.heatonacupuncture.co.uk

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 26
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

LOCAL CHILDREN’S WEAR COMPANY HELPS TO RAISE SYNDROME AWARENESS Williams Syndrome affects around one in 18,000 people in the UK
A
North East based baby and children's wear company helped to raise awareness of Williams Syndrome, a rare chromosome disorder by using models in their most recent product photo-shoot who have the condition and to co-incide with Williams Syndrome awareness month in May. It is a condition where early diagnosis is key to a child's development, health and ensuring parents get the right support. Three of the seven models used by Rusk & Rebels have Williams Syndrome; including owner Gayle Westgarth's son Dylan aged 15. Founded in 2011 by the motivation of providing future employment for Dylan and potentially other young adults who are living with learning and development difficulties. Rusk & Rebels design and create cool clothing with a personalised twist. Gayle said, "I have always wanted children with Williams Syndrome to model for us, but with it being so rare it is only recently I have met another two local families affected by the condition and I am delighted their children took part in the photoshoot. The pictures are fabulous and we are very proud." Gayle continues "I was fortunate Dylan was diagnosed at 14 months but this is not always the case and early diagnosis is key for families to access the right support. Families shouldn't be put in a position of 28
questioning health professionals for a number of years when they suspect their child has the condition, as was in the recent case of a 5 year old friend's daughter being diagnosed after initially being dismissed by the doctors and health visitors". Common features of Williams Syndrome are: Characteristic Facial Appearance (features include small upturned nose, long upper lip, wide mouth, full lips, small chin and puffiness around the eyes). Heart and Blood Vessel Problems, Hypercalcemia, Low Birth Weight / Slow Weight Gain, Feeding Difficulty, Irritability during infancy, dental abnormalities, kidney abnormalities, hernias, Hyperacusis (sensitive hearing), musculoskeletal problems, over friendly personality and development delay and learning difficulties. Up and down the country in May many families were fundraising to not only raise money for the Williams Syndrome foundation, but to create a wider awareness of the condition to empower parents with knowledge and educate health and education professionals. Rusk & Rebels supported the month by donating all their profits from any online sales (May only) plus any commission through Gayle's at home parties booked in May and June. For more information on the charity visit www.ruskandrebels.co.uk or contact Gayle on 07500956838.

DEALING WITH DENTAL TRAUMA DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAD AN ACCIDENT OR BLOW TO THE MOUTH THAT BROKE OR KNOCKED A TOOTH OUT? Joanne Duggan, Principal Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice offers some first aid tips.
The warm and light nights of summer are coming (hopefully)! That means kids playing out longer, cycling, cricket and family days out. However, does this also mean more chance of you or your son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter falling off their bike, scooter or skates? My son had an accident when playing outside in the summer; his front tooth was hit with a tennis racket and it broke in half. As a dentist I obviously knew what to do, but would you know what to do if you or a loved one was faced with a dental emergency?
1. STAY CALM
WHAT TO DO IF A TOOTH IS KNOCKED OUT
Pick it up by the crown, (the white part you would normally see in your mouth).
If a baby tooth is knocked out we would normally leave the tooth out, accept the gap, and wait for the adult tooth to erupt. However sometimes when an infant or child has knocked their mouth there can be quite a lot of bleeding. Injuries of the mouth often appear far worse as the soft gums can be damaged and bleed. Firstly try to stop the bleeding by applying a handkerchief over the area with light pressure. Then contact your dentist for an emergency appointment to properly assess and provide appropriate treatment. We want the injured child to receive the right care and follow-up appointments with the dentist may also be necessary. When an adult tooth is knocked out the advice is different and it should be dealt with as a real dental emergency as we want to try to save the tooth. The sooner you get help from your dentist the greater the chance of saving it.
32
Here are some important first aid tips if you are faced with this very unfortunate situation. Follow these simple steps: By following the steps below, you can hopefully limit the damage and improve the prospect of saving the tooth.
2. DO NOT TOUCH THE ROOT OF THE TOOTH 3. RINSE ANY DIRT FROM THE TOOTH If there is dirt on the tooth then briefly wash it under cold running water for 10 seconds and then reposition it back into the socket and bite down on a handkerchief to keep it in the correct position. If it is a baby tooth that has been knocked out then do not try to re-implant the tooth.
4. PUT THE TOOTH BACK IN THE SOCKET OR IN MILK If you are unable to place the tooth back into the
socket then put the tooth either into a GLASS OF MILK or hold it in your mouth between your cheek and side teeth. Take care not to swallow your tooth, therefore when a child has lost an adult tooth it may be better for the tooth to be placed in a glass or container of milk. Do not store the tooth in water.
5. CONTACT YOUR DENTIST IMMEDIATELY
You need to contact your dentist immediately for emergency dental treatment. If the tooth has been stored correctly and not allowed to go dry for more than 60 minutes there is a greater chance of saving the tooth and your dentist will try to re-implant it. You will need antibiotics and if the tooth has been in contact with soil your tetanus cover would need to be checked. A re-implanted tooth will require careful monitoring and you will need regular visits with your dentist afterwards. The tooth may need further treatment such as a root filling. Sometimes after a blow to the mouth a tooth may not be fully knocked out but have moved from its normal position (further up, down, or sideways). The surrounding part of your mouth may be damaged, or the soft gum could be bleeding. With ALL of these cases seek immediate emergency dental advice and treatment.
Reference: Dentaltraumaguide.org
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TOOTH WAS BROKEN OR FRACTURED IN AN ACCIDENT
If an accident means your adult tooth has broken, keep the piece of tooth if you have it and contact your dentist for emergency treatment. Sometimes if the fragment of tooth is available, it can be bonded back into position on your tooth. Alternatively your dentist will use white resin filling material to build the tooth back to its original shape. Any tooth that has been broken in an accident will need to be assessed by a dentist and will usually need follow up visits to monitor the health of the tooth. If it is a baby tooth that has broken the child will need to see a dentist for an emergency assessment. The broken piece of tooth will not normally be used as with an adult one. Realistically the treatment available will largely depend on the child’s age, stage of development and ability to cope with dental treatment. Hopefully you will never need to use the advice above, but however well we try to protect our loved ones, accidents will always happen. After any accident that involves your teeth or mouth, it is always best to seek immediate dental advice. If you need help dealing with a dental trauma please contact us at Bedlington Dental Practice on 01670 828402. We are located at 30 Front Street East, Bedlington, NE22 5AA.

GENTS, COME AND ENJOY SINGING IN A CHOIR
A
shington & District Male Voice Choir is now in its 101st year and appears to be going from strength to strength. All males of any age who have an interest in singing are welcome to ‘have a go’. This is a community choir, with members coming from a wide area of South East and mid Northumberland. Weekly rehearsals are held in the Stakeford & Bomarsund Sports & Community Centre, (the former Welfare) on Thursdays at 7-00pm. Prospective members do not have to be able to read music or have previous experience. There is a 6 week familiarisation period giving gents the opportunity to see if the choir is for them and very few decide it’s not! Once accepted into full membership a uniform is issued. Choir membership is not only about singing. Rehearsal nights also give the opportunity for the gents to socialise, have a chat over a coffee, and get to know each other, and this camaraderie helps unite the group in their singing.
Most concerts are for charitable organisations, resulting in considerable funds being raised for worthwhile purposes. The choir’s good name has resulted in invitations to sing at a number of ‘prestige events’ including the Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland’s Garden Party in Alnwick Castle Gardens and the Pit Chapel in Beamish Museum. The Committee is always interested in hearing from organisations who could be interested in putting on a concert, just visit the website, www. ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org or see the Facebook page which is also the place to see their program of concerts and performances for the coming months.

LIFESTYLE
DE-CLUTTER TO FEEL CALMER
W
Irene Anderson, founder of The Happiness Company, discusses how de-cluttering doesn’t just clear your home, it also clears your mind.
e are really in to spring now, bringing with it longer days more light and, if we are really lucky, some warmth and sunshine. The world feels new and fresh again and there is a natural desire to lighten up in what we wear, what we eat and our homes. Spring cleaning, getting rid of clutter and blowing away the cobwebs of winter makes us feel better. The science behind this is that everything is energy and holds an energetic vibration. When our homes are full of things stuffed in cupboards, drawers, attics and spare rooms it actually affects how we feel and has a negative ‘dragging down’ energy. In just practical terms, clearing out things we haven’t used or worn for years and organising items so a) you know where they are and b) you can get to them easily, can save you time and huge frustration. TIDYING FESTIVAL The Japanese Tidying expert Marie Kondo suggests having a tidying festival, where you really just go for it and get rid of everything that no longer serves you and only keep things that you know you will use and that bring you joy. Then folding and organising what is left so that everything becomes easily accessible. I know that may sound like a daunting task, but I took a weekend to do this and was amazed at just how much stuff I had accumulated that hadn’t been used for decades. I gave away a lot, binned a huge amount and organised the rest. My goodness what a difference. No more things falling out of cupboards when I opened doors and no more drawers full of junk. The only clothes that are in my wardrobe now are things I actually wear. But, more impressively, I felt so much calmer and there was a lighter atmosphere in the house and I could find everything I wanted. No more frantically scrabbling around in the downstairs cupboard looking for matching shoes! Organising and tidying your workspace and paperwork is hugely beneficial in helping you work more 46
productively. Go through your email box and have a delete or junk session. Unsubscribe to things that clutter up your in-box. Also delete any one on Facebook that clutters up your news feed with rubbish or negativity. If the idea of a full on de-clutter festival seems just too overwhelming, then why not decide on a room or a cupboard at a time. Just as important as de-cluttering our physical space is de-cluttering our mind. How many of us have a mind stuffed full of lists of things we need to do, situations we are mulling over, problems that need solving. The list is endless, and the brain just goes into overdrive and ceases to work efficiently and that is when we have accidents, get in a panic, loose things, forget what we were doing. Do you recognise this pattern? If you do here is something to try. WRITE IT DOWN Get yourself a notebook and each night before you go to bed write down what you need to do in the morning. Then write down anything that is bothering you or you are struggling with and how you are feeling about things in general. This is hugely beneficial and helps promote better sleep because you have ‘downloaded’ information your brain no longer needs to store or worry about. Keep a little note book with you during the day and jot down thoughts, ideas, new things to do. This takes a huge burden from the brain and you will notice how much more clearly you can think. If you want more information on this subject, look up Marie Kondo on YouTube or get her book ‘Spark Joy’ Also Three Simple ways to de clutter the mind Lisa Washington YouTube Irene Anderson runs The Happiness Company, specialising in Movement, Music, Mindfulness. www.thehappinesscompany.co.uk

HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN
In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care. 50
What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.
What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.

PLENTY TO DO AT WOODHORN If you want to combine local history with a fun day out this summer, then look no further than Woodhorn Museum.
F
or more than 80 years Woodhorn was a coal mine. At it’s peak almost 2,000 men worked at the pit and 600,000 tons of coal was produced each year. Production stopped in 1981, but the shafts continued to be used for neighbouring Ashington Colliery until 1986. It began its life as a museum in 1989 and, following major redevelopment, reopened in October 2006. Today, the yellow Ashington brick buildings have protected, listed status. The site is recognised as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and it is the best surviving example of a late 19th/early 20th century colliery in the North East tradition. The new Cutter building is stunning - inspired by monster coal cutting machines, and with the original colliery buildings it tells the story of Northumberland through fascinating, emotive displays, miners' paintings, an exciting changing exhibition programme, and Northumberland's amazing archival "treasures". The Northumberland Archives cover over 800 years of the county's history and provide an amazing record of the past. The Workshop Galleries hosts some amazing big blockbuster exhibitions and, in recent years, has welcomed Wallace & Gromit, famous movie cars and even Dinosaurs! The Museum is located on the edge of the delightful Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, with a 40 acre lake at
56
its heart. Visitors can enjoy walking or cycling around the lake, with public access from the museum end and the northern approach. A hard surface gives good access to all, but grassed paths offer opportunities to explore too. The park was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1979. This followed years of reclamation work with a massive earth moving project, removing what was one of the biggest colliery spoil heaps in Europe. The lake is popular with watersports enthusiasts, in particular canoeing and coarse fishing. One of the favourites in the park has to be the red squirrel. Keep your eyes peeled on your walk around but if you don't see one, pause beside the narrow gauge railway at the museum where you are almost guaranteed to catch one or a whole group of them on the feeders. Greater spotted woodpeckers can be seen here too. An exciting new play area for younger visitors is now available at Woodhorn. Inspired by the site's industrial heritage, the facilities include a special interactive mining platform with shovels, hoists and wheels, a tower tunnel slide, a crawl though tunnel, mining carts and even a pair of wooden pit-ponies: something for kids of all ages to enjoy. If you want a more relaxing time, you can enjoy a trip on the Woodhorn Railway Society's Narrow Gauge Train. It travels from Woodhorn through the QEII Country Park
OUT & ABOUT
to the north end of the lake. Look out for the wildlife - the lake attracts many different kinds of birds all year round, and of course those squirrels! The Winding House Café offers a selection of freshly prepared snacks, light meals and scrumptious cakes using great local suppliers and the best Northumbrian ingredients. It is a contemporary space set in the heart of the historic pit yard (just separated by a wall of glass) and features a specially commissioned artwork “The Making of a Man” by artist Nina Wakbayashi, capturing a young lad’s first shift underground in the Japanese manga cartoon style. Enjoy a cup of delicious Northumberland Tea, coffee or perhaps a refreshing rose lemonade from Fentimans with your home made scones, cakes and sandwiches (including the local favourite, ham and pease pudding). Try a toasted sandwich or baked potato, or some of their own delicious home-made soups and a roll from Trotters Family Bakers. Picnic boxes are available for the younger generation (sandwich, fresh fruit and a drink). Why not treat yourself and finish off with some gorgeous Doddington Dairy ice-cream made in the heart of Northumberland. Woodhorn is a great attraction for the whole family, with hands-on activities, an events programme and that
all important cup of tea! And don't forget the country park with its cycle routes and stunning wildlife! To keep up to date with all the latest events make sure to check out their website www. experiencewoodhorn.com Woodhorn Museum, QEII Country Park, Ashington NE63 9YF. Tel: 01670 624455
