WHAT HAPPENS IN A REIKI TREATMENT?
A Reiki treatment is an hour in duration, and takes place in a private, comfortable and relaxing treatment room. During a treatment you will either lay comfortably on a treatment bed cocooned in a cosy blanket or if you prefer sitting in a chair. Relaxing music will be played in the background. The lights will be dimmed to allow you to softly focus within. Once you are settled Lindsey places her hands in a series of positions on or close to your body which allows the Reiki energy to flow, starting on your shoulders, then the top of your head, your chest moving down the body to your feet. A
new guide is now available which gives local residents 8 interesting walks around Ashington Community Woodland, a fantastic green space close to the town centre. The guide is for a range of abilities and fitness levels and has been developed by Friends of Ashington Community Woods with support from Groundwork NE, Active Northumberland and Walking for Health. The woodland is on the former Ashington Colliery site and covers approximately 135 hectares, lying immediately to the north of the centre of Ashington, with access over the railway line next to the Police station. It also boasts a colony of red squirrels. The Friends of Ashington Community Woods group contribute to the very important ongoing maintenance and success of the woodland.
Volunteers from the group carry out essential woodland management tasks such as path maintenance and wildlife habitat creation as well as organising community events and have a good time whilst doing it! To download the guide, please visit:

MAJOR MILESTONE FOR TRIPLE DECKER ROUNDABOUT
W
ork to create the North East’s first triple decker roundabout has reached a major milestone, nearly a year since the scheme started.
Over the next few weeks drivers and residents will see a 400 tonne crane on the site where the A19 meets the A1058 Coast Road. The crane will be lifting 55 huge concrete reinforced beams into place which will form the base of the new bridges. Three bridges are being put in place, 1 to support the A1058 Coast Road over the Coast Road roundabout and 2 to carry the Coast Road roundabout over the newly lowered A19. This will create the third layer of the junction and will mean drivers will be able to continue straight along the A19 underneath the roundabout. These 55 beams have been transported from West Mead in Ireland and weigh 35 tonnes each at a length of 22 metres. Of these beams, 22 have already been put in place on the north bridge of the roundabout. Highways England assistant project manager Steven Cox said: “This is an exciting milestone because once these bridges are in place we will be able to start creating the underpass which is what obviously will take the most time as we need to remove 80,000 cubic metres of earth. It’s great 12
that we have managed to hit this major milestone nearly a year since we started construction. Over the last 12 months we have worked 285,000 hours up to the end of June with an average of 120 people on site every day. “During that time we have installed a retaining wall on the A19 southbound approach to Silverlink roundabout, which enabled the construction of the Silverlink Point retail development. The roundabout has been altered and the A1058 has been moved into a contraflow on the westbound carriageway so work could start on putting in the supports for the bridges.” Work has also been carried out at Middle Engine Lane. Over the last few months piling work has been completed which will form the foundation of the new bridge carrying the A19. The new bridge will be widened to support the A19 and new southbound exit slip road and this will be completed in the next few months. As part of the scheme, improvements will be carried out to 1,175 metres of cycleway and an extra 247 metres will be created. The scheme employs 6 graduate or apprentices and 60% of its workforce is from the North East. The £75 million Highways England scheme when finished will reduce congestion and improve journey time reliability for the thousands of drivers who use it every day.
Admissions for September 2018 open mid September 2017 We welcome applications from all sections of the community, including non-Catholics. “Relationships between staff and pupils are extremely positive and this mutual respect supports effective learning (Ofsted 2016)

ASHINGTON HIRST PARK SET FOR MAJOR RESTORATION A MULTI-MILLION POUND CASH BOOST FROM THE NATIONAL LOTTERY WILL ENSURE AN HISTORIC ASHINGTON PARK IS RESTORED TO ITS FORMER GLORY
N
orthumberland County Council has been successful in securing a £2.29million ‘Parks for People’ grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The funding will ensure that the Flower Park is rejuvenated and landscaped, a new play area developed and greenhouses and buildings restored to provide much improved public spaces. New training facilities for the community, to be operated in partnership with Northumberland College, will also be created. The National Lottery grant will be supported by contributions from the county council, Ashington Town Council and the Ashington Leisure Partnership, bringing the total project value to £2.7m over the next five years. The 100-year old park is renowned as being the place where international football legends the Charlton brothers and Jackie Milburn played as youngsters. The funding will also establish an annual Charlton & Milburn Cup tournament so that local youth groups can follow in their footsteps. The National Lottery funding will allow play facilities to be enhanced with water play features reintroduced, and the colourful floral displays that the park is so fondly remembered for will also be revived. Councillor Glen Sanderson, cabinet member for environment and local services, said ‘This is absolutely fantastic news for the park, local residents and the Ashington area. Thanks must go to all those who have put so much work into this scheme over the past few years to secure this extremely substantial funding commitment. This project will protect the park and its heritage for the community for the next century and enable generations to play, learn and relax in this wonderful space.’ Ashington Town Council's Business Chair, Councillor Mark Purvis, added ‘On behalf of the Town Council I am

are delighted with the successful outcome of the bid. Successful bids of this magnitude require a great deal of work over a period of time with a lot of this work often going unseen. The Town Council, as a major partner in the bid, now looks forward to seeing the exciting plans being turned into reality and the Park being returned to its former glory.’ The Heritage Lottery Fund’s Chief Executive, Ros Kerslake, said, on behalf of HLF and Big Lottery Fund ‘It’s difficult to overstate the importance of our public parks. Vital to our well-being and essential to biodiversity, they are highly valued spaces enjoyed daily by people from all walks of life. Hirst Park is one of the latest parks to benefit from over £900million of National Lottery funding, which over the last twenty years has played a crucial role in revitalising more than 800 parks across the UK.' The Hirst Revival project plans to deliver: The lost garden of Hirst will be recreated and links between the recreation ground and Flower Park will be opened up. Horticultural training including courses to help families grow their own vegetables. Research activities and events to engage local people to help us discover more about the heritage of the park, people and the area. A play zone, including a water play feature and wildlife areas. The former site of the Woodhorn monument will be developed into a community performance and interpretation space, telling the mining heritage story of the area.

CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME A WEEK OF EXPANSIVE EDUCATION AT ST BENET BISCOP CATHOLIC ACADEMY
S
tudents and staff at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy have stepped out of the classroom and into the school grounds and the local community to engage in a range of activities focused on the theme of ‘Caring for Our Common Home’. The student reporting team commented; ‘students have been involved in a variety of different activities which all link into the message given to the world by Pope Francis in his encyclical message - Laudato Si - Care for our Common Home. The idea behind the project was to raise awareness not only of global issues affecting our planet but also to expand our goals for learning beyond success in examinations and to embrace the fact that learning opportunities also happen outside the classroom’ Students and staff worked on a wide range of projects including; making garden furniture out of old pallets, landscaping the school’s neglected garden and pond, making garden accessories from old pots and tyres, planting vegetables in raised 18
beds, researching and producing Fairtrade food and designing and creating new clothes from old material and unwanted items. Other groups researched and experimented with renewable energy such as pedal power and wind turbines while others made proggy mats from old bits of material and created a Stomp performance using recycled bottles as instruments. Staff and students enjoyed supporting the efforts of the Bedlington in Bloom team, planting & tidying flower beds at Chester Court Care Home, and on Bedlington Front Street in collaboration with the Co-Op. Bedlington Central councillor Russ Wallace visited the school site during the week and commented ‘The atmosphere as we walked around the campus was amazing. Enthusiastic, hard working, on task students, the feeling of all being in it together, was inspiring.’ The project was primarily funded by The Key Fund and this funding enabled the school to work with the artistic team at House of Objects based in Benton. However, the project would not have been possible without the support of our wider community including

Rebecca Grey from Big Lottery, Una MacDermott from The Key and members of the local community. Deputy Head Miss Wrigley commented ‘There are specific skills and dispositions important to us at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy which we feel help prepare our young people for a complex and changing world and this is where our Expansive Education fits in. The programme has been in place for a number of years but the project has really exploded this year and that is due to the support of our students, parents, staff and wider community! Whether it has been through donations of food, plants and compost or the offer of time and expertise, the support provided has given students an opportunity to take ownership of important issues, such as climate change and pollution and be able to work on a range of projects that focus on our ‘common home’, our ‘community’ and help them to understand how to respect it and take care of it. We are already looking forward to next year’s project, which we anticipate will be bigger and better than ever!’

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 20
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. A GENTLER WAY
by Ferris Jerjis of Heaton Acupuncture Clinic
O
ccasionally it is good to slow down. I still remember my first Tai Chi class back in the late 1980s; it was in a small church hall in Heaton. At that point my only knowledge of Taoist Philosophy had come from the Tao of Pooh! Slowing down like Winnie was shown to be a good way to get things done. I watched the dozen or so students moving uniformly with a gentle grace through the form, connecting effortlessly with flow, shifting their weight with measured hand movements and an occasional kick. When I eventually started training, the teacher took great delight in demonstrating that despite being half my size and twice my age, she could topple me with ease! I had to learn, with practice, about my structure and how to integrate it into my movement. Over time, the lessons moved on to how we transition, how we rotate and how we use our breath. Luckily for me over the years I have had the good fortune that the core group of students from those days still train together at least once a week. SUGAR & YOUR TEETH JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, EXPLAINS THE REAL IMPACT OF INDULGING IN SUGAR
W
hat we eat and drink is really important for our general health but also the health of our teeth. Sugar in particular will rot or decay teeth.
You know when you have a packet of sweets that they are bad for your teeth, however with clever marketing there are also a host of other food and drinks that contain sugar without you realising; for example an advert can display a product as low fat, or to be a healthy option due to added vitamins and minerals, or no added sugar, when in fact they contain a lot of sugar. I find this very frustrating as a dentist as many people are caught out by eating hidden sugars and are not aware of the damaging potential on their health. The main message is to reduce both the amount and frequency of foods and drinks that contain free sugars. Free sugars are those added to foods and drinks as well as sugars naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices. It does not include sugars found naturally in whole fresh fruit and vegetables or those naturally present in milk and milk products. Most free sugars in the diet are contained in processed and manufactured foods and drinks. When we cook our own food at home we know exactly what ingredients we have added, but many processed and manufactured foods have sugar added, therefore be sure to check the label for the sugar content.
BUT, WHAT IS DENTAL DECAY AND HOW IS SUGAR INVOLVED?
Dental decay is the same as dental caries, and happens when bacteria in the plaque on our teeth react with sugars from food and drink to create acid which softens the enamel and dentine. This softening of the teeth will eventually lead to a hole or cavity which could cause you pain, and the need for dental treatment.
WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR TEETH IF YOU HAVE REPEATED ATTACKS OF SUGAR DURING THE DAY? 32
When you have something sugary, your teeth are attacked by the acid produced. When you have finished eating or drinking, your teeth recover from this acid attack after about an hour; they will remineralise (harden again.) Saliva in your mouth helps to neutralise the acid, (which also happens more quickly if there is fluoride which is found in toothpastes or fluoride mouthwash.) The safest time to have anything containing sugar is with a meal. Eating and drinking sugar at meal times only is the best as your teeth are attacked on fewer occasions. Saliva production is also stimulated at mealtimes which has the added benefit of neutralising any damaging acid. Having sugary snacks and drinks in between meals can increase the risk of decay, because your teeth come under repeated attacks and do not have time to recover; the time between attacks is not long enough for the tooth to recover properly and harden, so the tooth becomes permanently damaged.
REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF SUGAR DURING THE DAY
It is therefore important not to keep having sugary snacks or sipping sugary drinks throughout the day. When sugar intake is restricted to meal times there is the opportunity and time for our teeth to recover and harden before the next attack of sugar and acid. If you need to have a snack in between meals then some alternative suggestions are whole fruit and vegetables, bread sticks, plain rice cakes, nuts, toast with butter/margarine, and to drink plain water, milk or tea/coffee with no sugar in.
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING SUGARY AN HOUR BEFORE BED
It is very important not to have anything sweet to eat or drink within an hour before bed. Even if we brush our teeth before bed there may still be harmful sugars left on our teeth. As our mouths dry up when we are asleep at night there is less saliva to protect our teeth. Never take a sugary drink to bed, only sip water during the night as the damage from any sugary drink will be much worse in a dry mouth at night.

SOME OBVIOUS FOODS THAT CONTAIN SUGARS WHICH WILL ROT OUR TEETH ARE : • • • • • • • • • • •
Fizzy pop and soft drinks Sweets and chocolate Cakes and biscuits Sponges, puddings and custard Sugar we put in tea or coffee Breakfast cereals Jams, honey Ice cream and sorbets Fruit juices and smoothies Milk shakes Sugar-containing alcoholic drinks
BUT THERE ARE ALSO SOME LESS OBVIOUS ONES SUCH AS : • • • • • • • • •
Dried fruit, for example raisins (the fruit being dried concentrates the sugars but they will stick to teeth and rot them) Tomato, brown and barbeque sauces Chutneys Crisps Yoghurts Savoury tomato pasta sauces Porridge with flavourings Cereal bars Flavoured rice cakes.

Newton’s third law of motion: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
I used to like to explain to patients the theory of Newton’s third law of motion sort of applied to eating and drinking sweet food and the damage it caused to teeth. This is because for every lovely chocolate bar or sweet thing you ate or drank (nice enjoyable action), then there is an equal and opposite horrible reaction to your teeth: caries that could cause pain and require dental treatment. However with further thought this is not the case! In fact the opposite reaction to sugar is not at all equal to our enjoyment of it, but is far, far worse (yes of course the law of motion does not apply to our teeth and diet but this explanation makes sense to my science influenced brain!) In fact for every sweet food or beverage we consume, and I may add enjoy, the damaging effect on our dental health and general health far outweighs the momentary enjoyment. The detrimental effects of sustained excessive sugar intake not only include rotting our teeth, but also other health problems such as weight gain and obesity which can lead to increasing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The scales are tipped heavily towards the damaging long lasting impact of sugar outweighing the brief enjoyment of taste. (Newton’s law most definitely does not apply!) So, we all need to think about reducing the amount of sugar we consume and make healthier choices. I am not saying don’t eat sugar at all; as a dentist I too like chocolate and cake, but I always consume in moderation, as part of a balanced diet, and only at mealtimes. To limit damage to our teeth, science has proven the safest time to eat or drink something sweet is with a meal. Ultimately none of us want to have holes in our teeth, and we definitely don’t want any dental treatment, so reducing our sugar intake and preventing dental decay should be everyone’s goal.

THE JOY OF SINGING Looking for a new hobby? Can you sing in tune, and are willing to learn? Read on!
T
yneside A Cappella is a choir of women who enjoy singing popular songs in four part close harmony in the a cappella style (without accompaniment – just voices). The aim is to sing to the best of our ability and have a great deal of fun along the way. Musical Director Peter Jones is a very experienced director and vocal coach, who gets the best out of the choir with a mixture of hard work and fun which has resulted in a wonderful sound and high standard of singing from the 47 members. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at West Moor Community Association, from 7.30 – 10.00 p.m. The Centre has a large, free car park and is on a main bus route. The choir is a mix of singers with some previous experience and those who have never sung before, and who come from a wide background and age group – teachers, students, housewives, health service, local government, retail, business, hospitality, retired – who are brought together as friends to enjoy singing and also several social events organised through the year outside of rehearsals. The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. Many of the girls say how much better they feel at the end of the rehearsal, even when its been a tough day or life isn’t at its best, the joy of singing, the support of good friends and the magical experience of a group of people coming together and performing as one lifts the spirits. There is a song for everyone - Queen, Nat King Cole,

Michael Buble; some Irving Berlin and some Beatles. Members pay £10 per month, and for that they receive music, teaching aids (teach track CDs/MP3s), performance outfits, excellent rehearsal facilities and support to learn how to sing to the best of their ability. None of the musical leadership receives any payment for their services – the choir is a team dedicated to musical enjoyment for all. New members are encouraged to learn at their own speed and become part of the performance ensemble when they and the Musical Director feel they are ready. There are no formal auditions, singers need to be able to sing in tune, hold their line, and be willing to learn.

ASHINGTON HAIR SALON INVESTS IN THE FUTURE Sublime Hairdressing expands into new premises
S
ublime Hairdressing Salon was purchased in 2012 by local entrepreneurs Adrienne Stewart and her daughter Chloe, initially located in rented premises at 150 Station Road, Ashington. They recently decided, with the business growing at such speed, the time was right to invest for the future. After searching for some time the perfect property became available, offering larger premises that would provide a better experience for all clients, both existing and new, and it was still within Ashington, located at 192 Hawthorn Road. In addition to local clients, the salon has many who travel from far and wide for the Sublime experience, from Jesmond, Whitley Bay and South Shields. The Sublime Team have worked extremely hard to develop the business in many areas including continuous training for all Stylists to ensure they are always up to speed with new products and techniques. Chloe is part of the Matrix Artistic Team and takes part in hair shows all over the North East and even travelled to Rome for part of her training recently. She is supported by her highly skilled team of Stylists, Eve Scullion, Corrie Dodds and Nina Haywood, who have all been so excited about the move to the new salon. Chloe says “the larger Salon also provides more space for our extremely popular Children’s Pamper Princess Make Up by Eve

Parties which are a huge success”. Although the Team is trained in every aspect of hairdressing, each Stylist has their favourite areas of creativity: Chloe's is colouring and up dos, for which she has won an award. Eve loves colouring and is able to do spectacular make-up. Corrie is fantastic at creative hair up, while Nina is a superb gents barber and stylist. So, whatever the occasion, Prom, Wedding or evening out, the Sublime Team can help make it more special by helping you enjoy your event even before you get there with your perfect pamper preparation. Sublime is a massive supporter of the MacMillan Charity and hosts an event each year. However, last year they decided to host it for the whole week rather than just one day. This was made possible by very generous clients also baking cakes throughout the week in addition to the Stylists baking their own. Everyone had the opportunity to participate in a lovely social week for a very special and worthy cause.
“
The salon has many who travel from far and wide for the Sublime experience, from Jesmond, Whitley Bay and South Shields
So far Sublime has raised a total of £2,490.45 for MacMillan, and is looking forward to adding to this total by holding another MacMillan event this September. Chloe and her teams’ success is a true testament to their hard work, commitment and dedication to their clients since 2012. DRURIDGE BAY'S FATE IN THE BALANCE AS OPENCAST COAL INQUIRY CONCLUDES
T
he public inquiry into the controversial Highthorn opencast mine has now concluded with the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) hopeful the environmentally destructive proposal will be rejected.
CPRE's veteran opencast coal mining expert Pitch Wilson was among many green campaigners opposing the planned extraction of millions of tonnes of coal near picturesque Druridge Bay. The 87-year-old submitted a detailed dossier giving numerous environmental and economic reasons why the planning application should not go ahead. But he was intrigued that the part of his evidence the inspectors were most interested in was the presence of 'ridge and furrow' field systems from medieval times on the site. Pitch, who was fighting his 40th opencast mining inquiry in the North East, said: "I expected to be crossexamined on the document I submitted which argued that the proposal would cause huge environmental damage, potentially blight Druridge Bay and also questioned the economic claims being made by the mining company. "Instead, that was all accepted, and the inspectors' questions to me were all about the ridge and furrow on the eastern section of the site, which they asked me to mark out on the map." Ridge and furrow, easily spotted from aerial photographs, was once commonplace across the country - a legacy of the open field system of farming when individuals ploughed their own furrow. The amount left has dropped dramatically in recent years and English Heritage and other agencies are now looking for ways to protect the little that is left because there is currently no legal protection for the formations. 42
Pitch said: "The distinctive furrows are part of the character of the landscape and a link to the country's ancient past and it is sad that so much of it has gone in my lifetime. "I've been to so many of these public inquiries before because I am passionate about the need to prevent opencast mining in the North East and protect the beauty of the rural countryside. "You go in there with all the evidence you can possibly muster and hope that the inspectors give you a fair hearing. "What was interesting to me in my interview with them was that they took such an interest in the ridge and furrow element of the submission - it may be that they were unaware of it previously. "All I can hope is that it is just one more thing to be taken into consideration alongside a whole host of good evidence submitted by environmental groups for this hugely intrusive, environmentally damaging application not to go ahead." The inspectors have been heading a public inquiry into a proposal by the Banks Group to extract three million tonnes of coal from the Highthorn site near tranquil Druridge Bay. Held at Kingston Park, the inquiry heard a huge amount of evidence from both Banks Group and their supporters, and the campaigners against a proposal that has attracted opposition locally, regionally and nationally. The Banks Group is proposing a surface mine near Widdrington and Druridge Bay - the application was approved by Northumberland County Council but called in by the Government who are investigating whether it was right to give the go-ahead. The next steps will be the planning inspector making a recommendation to the Secretary of State, who will make the final decision, which can be expected to be announced in the autumn.

There will be an opportunity for the public to take the very first photographs next to the memorial, before either heading up to a marquee at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre to join in the festivities or maybe heading off to one of the bars/restaurants on the fish quay that are also celebrating “Fiddler’s Green Day”. LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE
TAKE A PEEK AT PACKHORSE YARD Set just off Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, Packhorse Yard is home to a fine selection of local independent retailers.
D
avid Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us "We couldn't be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June last year. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we approach our first anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future." The yard is home to half a dozen units, all bringing something unique to the town. The first shop along the alleyway is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June 2017 the shop will be celebrating its first birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www. jandjmodels.co.uk, or follow them on facebook. The yard is also home to Willow Home & Gift, an independent, family run gift shop where you can discover a wide selection of affordable and unique gifts anything from a handmade piece of glassware to a gift for a mischievous mutt, they’ve got everything covered. The store is passionate about supporting UK designers/makers, and stock a variety of locally designed or produced products, so you are sure to find something a little different that won't break the bank either. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful
antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. Finally, Lateral Art, owned by Stephen and Fiona Greenway, sells artists materials from great brands that are often hard to find on the high street, as well as a wide range of artist’s papers and decorative and wrapping papers. The art range is accompanied by notebooks and journals from Leuchtturm 1917, Moleskine and Fabriano as well as Frenchic Furniture Paints and Decopatch papers, models and glues. The store wants to support local artists and run a monthly art competition. Visit www.lateralart.co.uk for further details. In an extension to the shop, The Lateral Art Studio allows the pair to offer classes in drawing and watercolour in the heart of Morpeth. The Studio is compact and allows small groups to get maximum benefit from sessions. They hope to grow their range of courses and welcome other artists, who may want to deliver courses, to use the studio. During the week, for a small hourly charge, the space is made available to local artists who just need a space to work or even just browse through their selection of art and craft books for inspiration. On Saturdays, and during school holidays, the Studio is used to provide drop-in sessions for all ages to enjoy the range of Decopatch products that the shop sells, visitors just choose their model and then use the Studio and its range of papers and glues to create a unique item to take home, or of course they can buy the materials to take home. Lateral Art can also provide Decopatch birthday party sets to give a creative alternative to party activities. Contact Stephen or Fiona if you are interested in attending or running classes or using the Studio on info@lateralart.co.uk So, next time you are in Morpeth, make sure you make time to venture off Newgate Street and explore the wonderful, unique, independent businesses in this wonderful setting.

CHARITY ON THE SEARCH FOR DOG-LOVERS IN TYNE & WEAR
H
GIVE SOMETHING BACK AND MEET SOME LOVEABLE LIFE-CHANGING PUPPIES ALONG THE WAY
earing Dogs for Deaf People - the sole organisation which trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds - is actively recruiting dog lovers who would like to take care of their adorable puppies and dogs in the Tyne & Wear region. The role of a volunteer dog trainer is to look after a gorgeous pup in their own home from 8 weeks old, for around 16 months. Volunteers provide the puppy with skills and obedience training, and take them along to weekly puppy classes and into as many different environments as possible. All volunteers are fully supported by the Charity’s expert dog trainers, who provide guidance every step of the way. Caroline & Terry Roeves, Volunteer Dog Trainers, say: “We have had our first puppy, Daphne, a Show Cocker Spaniel, for over a year now. We have made dozens of new friends from regular dog walks, we are much fitter and enjoy opportunities to socialise Daphne in local libraries, schools, stores, cafes and restaurants. We would definitely recommend volunteering for Hearing Dogs: your life will change for the better from day one!” Puppy Training Instructor, Lucy Parkin adds: “If you 52

local area and are very keen to hear from some more! As long as you have a car, a secure, private garden, and enough time to train a puppy or dog on a daily basis, then we would absolutely love to hear from you. You really can make such an enormous difference.” To find out more about volunteer dog training opportunities, please contact the volunteering team: volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk, 01844 348122 or visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk/volunteer

HELP NEEDED TO DECORATE TOUR ROUTE W
ith less than a month to go until the Tour of Britain races through Northumberland, businesses, community groups and local residents are being called upon to help decorate the route and help turn the county red and yellow - the colours of the Northumberland flag. The people of Northumberland are being asked to take part in the colourful project painting and displaying their old or unwanted bicycles to celebrate the Northumberland stage of the race which takes place on Monday September 4. Businesses can also get involved by dressing their streets and shop windows with red and yellow bunting, flags, flowers or cycling displays. The Northumberland stage of the race is due to start in Kielder Water & Forest Park and finish in Blyth, passing through 28 communities along its 211 km route. In 2015 The Tour of Britain swept through the county creating a wave of excitement as some of the world’s top cyclists cycled through our communities. Residents and businesses dressed the route in the distinctive red and yellow colours of the Northumberland flag and thousands of spectators lined the route to cheer
on the cyclists and give them a fantastic welcome. It is hoped that this year local communities will be just as involved. Northumberland County Councillor, Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for culture, arts and leisure said: “The Tour of Britain is the UK’s largest professional cycle race and is broadcast all around the world so it is a great chance to showcase the county as a fabulous place to visit and cycle in. “We want to add a real splash of the Northumberland red and yellow colours to the race route and would really like local residents to help us by getting creative and getting involved. We’ve spoken to the parish councils along the route and would really like local people to support them in decorating their communities.” The eight-stage race runs from 3- 10 September with the Northumberland stage taking place on Monday 4 September – full Northumberland route details can be found at www.nlandtob.com
