UNIQUE: Kim can create amazing cakes for any occasion
SIMPLY AMAZING With few specialist cake shops in the area, and following the success of her home cake making business, Kim Barrass took the plunge earlier this year and opened her first cake shop, Simply Kimberley’s, on North Seaton Road in Ashington.
K
im started the business 4 years ago working from home, initially baking a few cakes for friends and family, purely because she got enjoyment out of experimenting with different cake designs.
As her reputation for innovative, eye catching cakes grew, so did her customer base, and she quickly built up a Facebook following due to the quality and uniqueness of her products. Kim is keen to stress she is very much self-taught, she is not a qualified cake maker or decorator, just a talented baker, passionate about cake making, who’s undoubted talent has meant she has been able to forge a career doing what she loves. As the business expanded, as well as running out of space at home, Kim also had to travel further and further to get her increasingly diverse range of supplies. Due to her increasing popularity and the lack of supplies in the local area, Kim decided the time was right to move out of her home kitchen and in to open her very own cake shop. So, in March of this year that is exactly what she did, along with her partner and fellow cake enthusiast Rob Dale, and Simply Kimberley’s opened its doors on North Seaton Road in Ashington. Simply Kimberley’s is a haven for cake lovers. It is home to the largest range of cake decorations and supplies in the area, the choice is extensive and, if for some reason you cannot find the items in stock, she can order them in for you. As for the cakes themselves, this is where Kim really 6
comes in to her own. The choice is vast, and she can create almost anything for almost any occasion. Her speciality is 3D sculpted cakes, which she can do in a huge array of themes. She also does edible images on icing or rice paper for cakes or cupcakes if you prefer to make your own cake, meaning you still get a bespoke cake but have the satisfaction of making part of it yourself. A big advantage of Simply Kimberley’s being local and having their own shop is that you can come in and chat one to one with Kim or Rob to discuss your exact requirements. They will talk you through every step of the design to ensure you get the perfect cake to mark your special occasion. SOMETHING SPECIAL: The shop also has a great range of giftware, many from local crafters
LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE SUPPLIES: The shop is home to the largest range of cake decorations and supplies in the area
Simply Kimberley’s also run a range of themed workshops, aimed at children from 3 upwards. The workshops are fun packed and let your child’s creative juices run wild.
Simply Kimberley’s also run a range of themed workshops, aimed at children from 3 upwards. The workshops are fun packed and let your children’s creative juices run wild. The workshops start by each child being given their own apron, which they can decorate themselves (and keep adding to the design at each class). The workshops are all themed, and the children have a selection of cupcake designs to copy and create their own. The classes are approximately 2 hours in length, and are split into age appropriate groups, they also cater for special needs. After numerous requests they will soon be running a number of adult classes, starting with Christmas themed ones coming next month, after all why should the kids have all the fun! As with all the classes, keep an eye on Simply Kimberley’s Facebook page or call the shop for updates on times and dates. The shop is also home to a selection of giftware, many from local crafters. Stockists include local bespoke children’s clothing company Sew Many Keepsakes, Green Enhancement who produce handmade candles and giftware and Sparkles For Owen who produce personalised giftware. Simply Kimberley’s also sell a delicious range of fresh cupcakes and fresh cakes, all baked fresh every day. Cake away boxes are now very popular, and Simply Kimberley’s provide this service with an assortment of cakes cupcakes / cheesecakes / cookies / carrot cakes, meaning every sweet tooth is catered for. They have a 5* rating from the environmental Health, and both Kim and Rob are insured and also have current Food safety certificates The shop is open Monday to Friday from 9.30 – 5.00 and from 9.30 – 4.00 on Saturday. They also open late for classes, and occasional nights for collection. Simply Kimberley’s 15 North Seaton Road, Ashington, NE63 0AG. Tel: 01670 458 283 Facebook: Simply Kimberley’s 7

LOCAL NEWS NOMINEE: Local rap artist J Smirk
BEST OF BRITISH? YOU DECIDE! A FRESH NEW MUSIC TALENT FROM NEWCASTLE HAS BEATEN THOUSANDS OF OTHER ACTS TO BE NAMED IN THE UK’S TOP TEN UNSIGNED ARTIST
L
ocal artist J Smirk has been nominated in the Best Unsigned Male category at the 2017 Unsigned Music Awards (UMAs).
Launched in 2012, the awards have seen more than 50,000 music fans cast their vote, including celebrities such as rock star Frank Turner and International footballer Gareth Bale. J Smirk burst onto the scene just a year ago, and has quickly made a lasting impression with big tunes and addictive melodies, all with stories to tell and real meaning behind the lyrics. J even recently supported N.W.A on their “Straight Outta Compton” tour at the O2 Academy. If you haven’t heard of him yet, you certainly will in the near future! J is son to popular Soul and R&B DJ Sista Soul and has worked with producers of the like of Pitbull and others, including fellow north east rap talent such as Kay Greyson and Kema Kay. J Smirk said: “It’s an honour to be nominated, one of the hard things about being independent is gaining that recognition we all need to help push on, so it’s incredible to get the credit we all deserve”. Other award categories include Best Female, Best Band and Best Song, the latter previously won by Molly Smitten-Downes, who went on to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Content. The awards are organised by Best of British Unsigned (B.o.B), the UK’s number one website for ‘Unsigned Music’ which supplies a weekly radio show to 70FM stations in 15 countries. The winner of each category is crowned thanks to an online public vote. Matt Graveling, B.o.B founder said: “The UK produces the best musicians in the world and we get to play them before anyone else! The UMAs are the much needed recognition for these acts and we hope will
10
help motivate them to achieve more and more." Nominees are also put forward for 'The Critic's Choice Award', and J Smirk will hope his sound impresses a panel of three industry experts. This year's judges are: Max Helyer, guitarist for rock band You Me at Six, Dave Gilyeat, radio presenter for BBC Introducing, and Louise Dodgson, Editor of online music directory The Unsigned Guide. Max Helyer said: "For me it's important to support upcoming artists and help to give them more exposure. I’m looking forward to listening to the wide variety of styles of music submitted, some of which will hopefully become part of my personal everyday music catalogue. David Gilyeat added: It makes a real difference to get behind new unsigned music. The Talent of the future depends on our passion for it in the present. The 2017 awards are sponsored by Vocalzone who produce world famous throat pastilles and herbal tea used by singers and voice professionals. George Ponsford, Sales & Marketing Director said: "Unsigned music in the UK is stronger than ever before, and these awards are not only great for recognising some of this country’s most promising artists, but also giving them the platform to share their music with the masses online.”. The vote for Best Unsigned Male 2017 takes place at www.vocalzone.com/vote between Monday 16th OctoberSunday 22nd October, so make sure you go online and support one of our best local up and coming talents. J Smirk will be performing at the O2 Academy in Newcastle Wednesday 15th November, Supporting Rex Regis. Get your tickets of the O2 academy newcastle website. lantsplus Garden Centre, a former retail nursery on the outskirts of Newcastle, just off the A1 near Ponteland, is now a branch of Berwick and Dunbar Garden Centres. They officially joined the group in November 2016, and the first set of major infrastructure tasks have now been completed; including extensive site drainage, the installation of an environmentally friendly biomass heating system, and re-roofing of the retail area. Berwick Garden Centre first opened in 1983, initially as a small nursery established by a local farmer, Nick Crabbie employing just two part-time employees. Over the years it has expanded and diversified to include a restaurant, a farm shop, a pets and aquatics range as well as gifts and homeware. Struggling to expand on the land

any further, Dunbar Garden Centre was built and opened in 2013. Now in its 4th year, Dunbar Garden Centre has already obtained a 4-star Visit Scotland award and Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. The Taste Our Best Award (also from Visit Scotland) was accredited through endeavouring to source local produce wherever possible to produce freshly cooked food and baked goods in store. Nick Crabbie, managing director of the group told us: “This latest addition squares the circle for the future of our business. Plantsplus will continue to operate as a nursery and will supply plants to both Berwick and Dunbar garden centres. We also want to develop the retail side of Plantsplus with a strong emphasis on the promotion of home grown plants”. Currently under construction are improvements to car parking and disabled access, the provision of extended indoor and outdoor plant viewing areas, provision for yearround shopping, as well as a new coffee shop. “These are exciting times,” said Crabbie, “We are in the process of creating a unique offering in the North East. This business was founded on providing quality, home grown plants to discerning gardeners. We will build on that tradition and will readily allow customers to witness the full

horticultural experience.” Known for bursting at the seams with colour in the Spring and Summer months with expertly planted hanging-baskets, patio planters and bedding plants, the garden centre will now be open all year round, seven days a week (excluding Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day). The centre has introduced a new Reward Card where customers can earn and redeem points and exclusive offers across all three garden centres. Customers already enjoy visits between our Dunbar and Berwick stores, and with beautiful countryside and local visitor attractions in the surrounding Ponteland and Seaton Burn area, we don’t doubt there will be many of our current customers coming to experience Plantsplus for the first time. There is also a display site from ‘Escape to my Garden’ (www. escapetomygarden.com), offering bespoke sheds, summer houses and log cabins.
As the nights start to roll in and the evenings get darker, the centre will be hosting its first year of festive products for its customers. Beginning in October, the garden centre will be filling up with artificial trees, lights and Christmas decorations. Christmas Donkeys will arrive week beginning 20th November, with all funds raised through donations going to the Borders Donkey Sanctuary. Christmas wreaths and poinsettia will be arriving at the end of November. The centre will be fully open, seven days a week, during this exciting period of development with their knowledgeable, friendly staff always available to answer any questions you may have, so why not pop in and take a look? REPRESENTING: Katherine with 4.15 alumni Sarah Rayson who plays Floss Guppy in The Dumping Ground
GETTING TO KNOW KATHERINE MONACO Newcastle based performance arts company, Famous 4.15 have been working with children and young adults to develop their performance skills since 2001. Teaching singing, dance and drama, in a fun and friendly environment. We chatted to Katherine Monaco, Principal at Famous 4.15, to find out more about her inspiration behind setting up the company and some of the exciting projects ahead. Can you remember the first time you performed in front of an audience? How old were you and what was the show? Yes, I do! I was 5, performing a tap number of ‘Walking in a Winter Wonder Land’. I was as graceful as an elephant at that age! I nailed the whole number until the very last step, then boom, I shuffle-ball-slipped centre stage and landed on my bootie, my ridiculous frilly dress around my head and matching knickers on show to the whole audience. Tap and ballet really weren’t my forte.
Growing up did you favour one discipline over the rest?
I was a dancer. Dance was definitely my thing! That ‘hallelujah’ moment when I found my commercial feet and realised, dancing wasn’t all about being a ballerina! Touring the world with Sirens allowed us the creative freedom to choreograph most of our own tours, as well as work with some world famous choreographers and there was nothing more appealing to me than being locked in a dance studio for days rehearsing. Singing came after dancing– when I formed the band Sirens with my buddy Karina. I’m a Hip Hop girl at heart and bands like TLC & The Beastie Boys inspired us to jump in to the music business head first. 18
What made you want to set up a performing arts school? I love working with young people and when I was young I didn’t have the opportunities to explore modern, relevant Performing Arts. ‘Stage’ schools were too expensive, very traditional and far too strict for my free spirited young self! After my experiences in the pop world I decided a PA hub that had a more current approach was sorely needed. We work with the kind of material and young, vibrant team of teachers that embraces that. My young self would have loved Famous 4.15! Your music career with Sirens has taken you all over the world - you must have had lots of adventures, what are your favourite memories?
LOTS! Meeting Kanye West in Tokyo, meeting Pudsey Bear in Carlisle and hearing our Number #1 American Dance Hit everyday whilst driving the school run with my fam in Houston! Being produced by Ryan Tedder (One Republic), shooting Sirens Club LA LA video in L.A with RayKay (Lady GaGa’s director) and hearing our record played on BBC Radio 1 for the first time with my home girls! I could write a book, but there’s a taster!
LOCAL INTERVIEW
AN EDUCATION: Katherine with movie producer Spike Lee
Have you met lots of celebrities? Was there anyone you particularly liked?
Apart from our lovable fellow Geordies, Ant & Dec; last year I had the pleasure of being invited to New York University as a guest of the legendary movie producer Spike Lee, for a screening and post show analysis of his Michael Jackson ‘Off the Wall’ documentary. The panel consisted of the head of Motown Records, DJ Spinner, the genius Quest Love and Spike Lee himself. This was truly an education, in all things Michael, film, acting, music, LIFE! Walking through the streets of NYC with Spike Lee, is undoubtedly one of the most surreal and brilliant experiences I have ever had! You must be very proud of your students, some who will have been with you from the age of 3 right through to 18. It must be hard to see them leave?
I’m so proud, I need a new word for proud! They’ve gained places at some pretty prestigious establishments from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Trinity Laban, Italia Conti to name but a few! It’s heart breaking to see them leave and heart warming to see how they’ve been touched so positively by their time with us. We have grown up together, shared experiences together and built memories together. An eclectic mix of very special young people who see Famous as a family. I can’t get rid of them though, they’re like elastic bands, they go away for a while but come back at any given opportunity armed with updates and *gossip! *Our awesome Beth just popped in, fresh from dancing with Little Mix at the Brit Awards, she had all the low-down! Who is the most famous person in your phone book? Floss Guppy of CBBC’s The Dumping Ground! Floss is played by our lovable Sarah Rayson, a long-standing 415er who I have the pleasure of representing as an agent. Famous represents several young actors that I’ve placed in TV shows, short films, music videos. The end of year show at Famous 415 is always a brilliant occasion involving the whole company
including the tinies! There must have been lots of memorable moments?
It’s a pretty exciting time when everyone takes the stage! The anticipation, nervous energy and extreme excitement are a melting pot for many memorable moments. Some take the stage for the first time; some for the umpteenth time but each has their moment and their memory. The whole creative process is inclusive, we build the shows around pop culture and each show is original. It builds confidence, friendships, teaches the importance of encouragement and support and makes the kids feel proud to be part of something special. The kids and team are united. Yes, they work hard and yes, it’s a logistical challenge having 100 plus children aged 3-18 years in the same production but it’s so worth it! You clearly like a challenge! The resounding success of the Hit the North urban music festival in 2017 involving over 80 acts from around the world on one night in 12 venues was phenomenal. What are the plans for next year? It was brilliantly received so next year we plan more of the same: lots of diverse acts in lots of diverse venues in our fantastic city but we plan to add an even greater cross genre range of artists (more Hip-Hop for me!). Primarily, new music and breaking artists with cool headliners. We’ll also definitely be preceding Hit The North with Meet The North again- a showcase for great new music from the region, which we hope will inspire and encourage young Northern artists.
You work with many young aspiring musicians, actors and dancers. What’s the best piece of advice you can give them?
PROUD: Katherine's students grow up together, share experiences together and build memories together
Be yourself. Believe in yourself. Enjoy yourself! The Famous ethos is simple: everyone can have his or her chance to shine, whether that means fifteen minutes spent singing into a hairbrush or a major role on stage or screen. We offer training that is relevant, exciting and inclusive but most of all we inspire self-belief, confidence and encourage everyone to be proud of who they are. If a child lacks in self-belief, they need not worry, we will have enough belief in them until they do!

SEASONAL ADVENTURES IF YOU FANCY A TRIP AWAY TO GET YOU IN THE MOOD FOR CHRISTMAS, HERE ARE A SELECTION OF SOME OF THE BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS ACROSS THE UK.
WINCHESTER
20 November –22 December Set in the Inner Close of the city's great Norman cathedral, with an ice rink at its heart, this market is a charmingly festive spectacle - no wonder people come from all corners of Britain to shop here. The wooden stalls sell a great selection of presents, including decorations, jewellery, paintings and prints, bags, hats and children's toys. And, just beyond the Close, there is more excellent shopping in The Square and Parchment street. If the usual Christmas market fare of mulled 20
wine, bratwurst, mince pies and stollen isn't to your taste, Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have restaurants in the city too (rickstein.com andrivercottage.net), or wander down the sideroads and alleys of the compact city centre to find attractive cafes and teashops. And to remind yourself of the spiritual side of Christmas, slip into the cathedral to hear the cherubic choristers sing choral evensong. www.christmasmarkets.com/UK/ winchester-christmas-market.html CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

LINCOLN
7 - 10 December You'll need to get your skates on if you want to visit Lincoln's market, as it's held over just four days this year, opening at noon on Thursday December 7. Lincoln brought the first traditional German Christmas market to the UK in 1982 as part of its twinning with the German town of Neustadt. Originally there were just 11 stalls in Castle Square, which have now multiplied to more than 280, selling a wide range of craft and food products and set around the city's lovely cathedral and castle. A funfair and big wheel will be installed for the weekend, live bands will provide entertainment and there will be a traditional carol service in Lincoln Cathedral on the evening of December 10. www.visitlincoln. com/whats-on/lincoln-christmasmarket-2017

Handmade decorations, traditional wooden toys, leatherwork and crystal lamps are among the most popular items on sale, while gingerbread, marzipan, pretzels, schnitzels, bratwursts and mulled wine fuel the shopping. www.birmingham.gov.uk/ info/20007/things_to_do

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 24
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. GIVE GUM DISEASE
THE BRUSH OFF JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, EXPLAINS HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM GUM DISEASE
WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
When your gums are sore, inflamed, swollen, bleed or infected this is gum disease. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.
WHAT IS GINGIVITIS?
Gingivitis means ‘inflammation of the gums'. This is when the gums around the teeth become very red and swollen. Often the inflamed gums bleed when you clean your teeth. Some people are scared to keep brushing if their gums bleed, but it is really important to continue to do so. Spitting blood out is certainly not pleasant but if you stop cleaning you will not remove the harmful plaque and bacteria that cause the gum inflammation. So persevere, keep brushing, and with good oral hygiene at home the gum inflammation should improve. It is however important to visit your dental team to get the correct advice about
your gums and how best to clean your teeth at home and monitor your gum health.
WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE?
Teeth are held into place by the jaw bone which is under the gum. When healthy there is usually a very small space between the tooth and the gum where the tooth meets the gum. If there is gum disease, this space between the tooth and gum gets bigger forming a deeper space called a pocket. The deeper the pocket or space surrounding the tooth, the less the tooth is attached to the gum and the more difficult it is to clean; harmful plaque and bacteria can get under the gum and destroy the gum attachment further but also destroy the bone anchoring the tooth. This bone loss leads to the tooth becoming loose and if periodontal disease is not treated can ultimately lead to the loss of a tooth.
31
www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk
COMPLICATIONS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE • •
• • • • •
Bad breath or halitosis Blood on your toothbrush or in the toothpaste you spit out after cleaning your teeth Bad taste in your mouth Abscesses Receding gums Loose teeth Loss of teeth
Gum disease has been linked with other medical conditions such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, poor pregnancy outcomes and dementia. Although more research is needed to understand the exact link, there is evidence that having a healthy mouth and gums can help improve your general health.
WHAT CAUSES GUM DISEASE AND HOW DO I TRY TO PREVENT IT?
All gum disease is caused by plaque due to the harmful bacteria it contains. There is also a link to periodontal disease with a family history (hereditary), stress, hormonal and diabetes. Smoking too has a strong link with periodontal disease and the advice to all smokers is to stop smoking. To prevent and treat gum disease, you need to make sure you attend the dentist for regular examinations and also for any necessary treatment. However treatment at the dentist or hygienist will not be successful unless you remove all the plaque from your teeth every day. I'm afraid there is a lot of homework for you to do in between dental appointments; you cannot rely on your 3 monthly hygienist visits to do all the work for you. Treatment of periodontal disease will not be successful if you don't clean the plaque off your teeth; your plaque removal at home must be impeccable to remove the harmful bacteria to prevent the disease process progressing. I cannot stress the importance of this enough! Without good plaque removal at home then the disease process will continue. So you must: 1. Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes, especially before bed 2. Clean interdentally every day. Your dental team will advise you of the best products for you to use for every area of your mouth. Examples of some of the products
32
are floss, interdental brushes and single tufted brushes.
SMOKING AND GUM DISEASE
There is a definite link between smoking and gum disease, so if you are a smoker, stopping is one of the best ways to improve your gum health. Smokers tend to have more hard calculus and plaque, plus smoking reduces the blood supply to the gums. This means infected gums do not heal as well and the reduced blood supply could mask the symptoms of gum disease (bleeding gums in particular). So, if you are a smoker it really is worth the health benefit for your gums if you quit.
WHY VISITING YOUR DENTIST REGULARLY IS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOUR GUM HEALTH
When you visit the dentist, they will screen you for any gum disease by performing a basic periodontal examination (BPE). The dentist will gently feel around your teeth and gums and assess the pocket depths (looseness of the gums), and if there is any bleeding, plaque and calculus. The dentist will then have a score for your gums that will indicate both the condition of your gums and also the treatment that is needed. X-rays may also be needed to see the amount of bone that has been lost. This assessment is very important, so the correct treatment can be prescribed for you.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
If you have gum disease you may need multiple
Bedlingtonshire
Dental Practice
bacteria deep in the pockets. Your gums will then be reassessed to see if there has been improvement. If there is improvement then you will need to have a maintenance treatment plan, but if there is no improvement or worsening you may be offered more specialist treatment or even a referral to see a dentist whom specialises in periodontal disease for further help.
WHAT HAPPENS IF GUM DISEASE IS NOT TREATED?
Unfortunately, if you do not go regularly to the dentist you may not notice the destruction caused by gum disease until you have an abscess or loose tooth or bleeding/sore gums. Over a number of years, disease progression can lead to loss of the bone supporting the teeth, leading to tooth mobility, infections and tooth loss. If the disease is left untreated for a long time, treatment can also be more difficult. It is vital you visit your dentist/hygienist regularly whom will monitor your gum health and advise you of the best treatment needed for you. Periodontal disease treatment is not a quick fix; it needs a lot of motivation and commitment from you the patient. Without good plaque removal at home, gum disease will not improve. Even after gum disease treatment, your gum health will need to be monitored regularly and maintained.
IF I HAVE IMPLANTS, CAN I STILL GET PERIODONTAL DISEASE?
You can still get gum problems around implants that can lead to loss of the bone surrounding and supporting the dental implant. This bone loss can lead to the failure of an implant and it may need to be removed. This condition is called peri-implantitis. It is really important with implants that the surrounding gum health is good with excellent removal of plaque at home every day. It is important to visit your dentist/hygienist to get the appropriate advice on how best to clean your implants and to receive the correct maintenance.
IN CONCLUSION appointments with your dental team. They will remove all plaque and calculus, (hard deposits) from your teeth and show you how to remove plaque successfully yourself, so you can thoroughly and effectively clean all the surfaces of your teeth. A good oral care routine at home with brushing and interdental cleaning is the most important thing you can do to help prevent gum disease getting worse. Once your teeth are clean, your dental team may need to treat the roots of the teeth, under the gums. This would involve cleaning under the gums to flush out any References www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/caring-for-teeth/gum-disease www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Gum-disease/Pages/Introduction.aspx British Society of Periodontology; Basic Periodontal Examination(BPE). Mar 2016
There is no cure for periodontal disease, but it can be controlled as long as you keep up the home care you have been taught by your dental team. The success of gum disease treatment and maintaining stable gum health relies very heavily on good plaque removal and oral hygiene at home to remove the harmful bacteria that drives this disease process. This message is so important; I'm sure you are sick of reading it but I don't think I've repeated myself enough!!!! Yes I do encourage (nag) my patients just as much to brush their teeth twice a day and to use interdental cleaning products every day. (If they do it, they get the benefit of good gum health plus I stop nagging!) 80z Rib Eye Steak
HEARTY DISHES WITH A MODERN TWIST WE TRY OUT ONE OF WHITELY BAY’S NEWEST RESTAURANTS, EVANS BISTRO
W
hitley Bay has a long standing reputation for both the quality and the variety of its eateries. The most recent addition to the town is set to further enhance this reputation, by serving the best of our local produce in an innovative way.
Evans Bistro, right in the heart of the town, claims to be passionate about good food, whilst serving hearty dishes with a modern twist. Located two minutes’ walk from Whitley Bay Metro Station (in the old Tiger Bill's building on Whitley Road),
Conveniently located in Whitley Bay, the restaurant is two minutes away from the metro station
36
the restaurant proudly sits on the extensive corner plot, boasting 85 covers and giving a modern feel with exposed bricks, booth style seating and a relaxed urban décor. They cater for all tastes, with a menu full of variety and mouth-watering choices. My wife and I popped in on a weekday afternoon, and we both found the restaurant to be bright and airy with a really good buzz about it. We sat in one of the booths and took in the atmosphere, generated from a good mix of couples and families. For my starter, I ordered the breadless scotch egg wrapped in bacon with rocket and house relish, a dish I have never experienced before, but it was really tasty and one I will certainly be having again. My wife opted for the crispy crab cake with pea puree and pea shoots, flavour combinations that work really well (I can vouch for that as my fork did stray over to her plate on more than one occasion!). For our main courses neither of us could take our eyes off the specials board, there were lots of mouth-watering options to choose from. I picked the 8oz rib eye steak served with house chips, asparagus, black pudding and
poached egg, whilst my wife decided on the toad in the hole with Cumberland ring, mash, roasties and onion gravy. Both dishes were generous portions, fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The steak was exactly as requested (medium rare), and the slightly runny poached egg was a real treat and brought the dish together well. My wife commented that the mash was incredibly moreish (and she is a mash aficionado!) and the onion gravy was divine. All of the dishes were a triumph, and we left feeling very satisfied and with no room for dessert! Evans Bistro aims to be as inclusive as possible, they have Vegan options on their menu (more available on request), are fully accessible and have installed a changing bed that can hold up to 20 stone in their disabled bathroom. They also have a dedicated play area to keep the young ones entertained while you relax and enjoy the food (although the kids menu is also packed with fresh hearty options). Having spoken to the joint owners, their passion for the business is clear to see. They have taken a lot of time to source the best wines, lagers and ales and stock from a local brewery. I had the organic lager with my main course, which I can highly recommend. Evans Bistro definitely brings something new to Whitley Bay. The quality of their food, the ever evolving menu choices, and their portion sizes, combined with their passion for good service makes it a very welcome addition to the town. We certainly won’t be strangers!

1. Put the soy sauce and 1/4 tsp of the chilli powder in a bowl. Add the chicken, mix together to coat and put in the fridge to marinate 2. Combine the rest of the chilli powder, the sugar and the vinegar in a non-metallic bowl. Add the sliced cucumber, toss together, then set aside. 3. Put 1 tbsp of the vegetable oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the mushrooms and spinach for 2-3 mins, until the mushrooms are starting to colour and the spinach has wilted. Add the bean sprouts and fry for another minute. Empty the pan, keeping everything separate and warm until needed 4. Cook the rice according to the
pack instructions. Meanwhile, add the rest of the oil to the pan on a high heat. When the oil starts to smoke, add the chicken to one side of the pan, and crack the eggs into the other. Fry for 3-4 mins, until the chicken is cooked through and the marinade is starting to caramelise. 5. To build your bibimbap, divide the rice between 2 bowls, arrange the carrot, mushrooms, spinach, bean sprouts, pickled cucumber and chicken on top of the rice, drizzle over the soy sauce and sesame oil, if using, top with a fried egg. Serve with some fresh chilli slices, if you like. Before tucking in, stir everything together, to mix up all those lovely flavours.

IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD, WHEN ALL AROUND ARE LOSING THEIRS... Irene Anderson, founder of The Happiness Company, gives her advice on how to stay calm and in control when the going gets tough...
R
udyard Kipling wrote those words in his poem IF. It seems very pertinent at the moment. The world seems to be in chaos. Our news features tell us of natural disasters, hurricanes and earthquakes. We have wars raging and politicians posturing.
Is it possible to keep our heads when all around are losing theirs? How can we stay calm and avoid a knee jerk reaction of fear, anxiety and helplessness when things seem to be out of our control? Of course this doesn’t just apply to world events but also to our everyday life. How do we deal with difficult situations that seem to be out of our control i.e. an awkward work colleague, a difficult family relationship, illness?
THE SCIENCE BIT The first thing that happens when we face situations like these is our lizard brain (the bit that is meant to warn us of danger and get us ready for fight or flight) goes into overdrive flooding our body with stress hormones. Useful if we have to run from a Sabre Toothed Tiger but not helpful when faced with modern dilemmas because when we are in panic fight or flight mode, our heart rate goes up, breathing becomes shallow and we can`t think straight. WHAT CAN WE DO? • Firstly, calm the Lizard brain. Concentrate on your breathing. Take long, slow, deep breaths. Count in 1234, out 1234. Do this at least 3 times. • Focus on all the things in your life for which you are grateful. Even things like the bed you sleep in, your morning tea or coffee, Be aware of all the things that are GOOD in your life. 50
Send out goodwill. Be specific start with people you love then those who a neutral to you then those you don’t like or who are difficult. (I send loving kindness to...) • Visualise in your mind’s eye the difficult situations or people being better. Imagine things sorting themselves out. See yourself being able to deal with everything that comes to you during the day. • Use a mantra ‘Everything is working out well, I am strong and capable of dealing with all situations that come my way, all is well.’ Like everything this gets easier with practice. If you feel yourself slipping back into panic mode, take a break and re focus on the steps above. •
SECONDLY, TAKE SOME ACTION • Whilst some things may be out of your control, there are many things that you can control. Taking action, even if it has nothing to do with the situation, immediately shifts you from helpless victim to powerful mode. • Think of what action you can take. Could you make healthier food choices, move your body more, learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, get to bed at a decent time, wake up a little earlier and spend 5 minutes breathing deeply and focussing on seeing the day ahead working out well for you. • Every little change you make has a ripple effect. As YOU change, the situations around you change. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself If you want some further help, log on to our website the happinesscompany.co.uk for a powerful morning meditation. Email me at ireneanderson5@hotmail.co.uk

THE JOY OF SINGING Looking for a new hobby? Can you sing in tune, and are willing to learn? Read on!
T
yneside A Cappella is a choir of women who enjoy singing popular songs in four part close harmony in the a cappella style (without accompaniment – just voices). The aim is to sing to the best of our ability and have a great deal of fun along the way. Musical Director Peter Jones is a very experienced director and vocal coach, who gets the best out of the choir with a mixture of hard work and fun which has resulted in a wonderful sound and high standard of singing from the 47 members. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at West Moor Community Association, from 7.30 – 10.00 p.m. The Centre has a large, free car park and is on a main bus route. The choir is a mix of singers with some previous experience and those who have never sung before, and who come from a wide background and age group – teachers, students, housewives, health service, local government, retail, business, hospitality, retired – who are brought together as friends to enjoy singing and also several social events organised through the year outside of rehearsals. The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. Many of the girls say how much better they feel at the end of the rehearsal, even when its been a tough day or life isn’t at its best, the joy of singing, the support of good friends and the magical experience of a group of people coming together and performing as one lifts the spirits. There is a song for everyone - Queen, Nat King Cole, 52
Michael Buble; some Irving Berlin and some Beatles. Members pay £10 per month, and for that they receive music, teaching aids (teach track CDs/MP3s), performance outfits, excellent rehearsal facilities and support to learn how to sing to the best of their ability. None of the musical leadership receives any payment for their services – the choir is a team dedicated to musical enjoyment for all. New members are encouraged to learn at their own speed and become part of the performance ensemble when they and the Musical Director feel they are ready. There are no formal auditions, singers need to be able to sing in tune, hold their line, and be willing to learn.

The choir performs regularly throughout the year at a variety of venues including Newcastle Civic Centre, Seaton Delaval Hall, various local churches, Beamish Museum, The King’s Hall at Newcastle University and current plans are shaping up for an exciting weekend in Ireland in April 2018 to take part in the Bangor International Music Festival.
