LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

STUNNING NEW LOOK FOR CHERRY TREE BAR & GRILL These are tough times for the English local pub, with many closing and others hanging on by the skin of their teeth. However, one local venue is bucking the trend, and it is refreshing to see investment and ambition in equal measures.

S

eptember saw the opening of the newly refurbished Cherry Tree Bar and Grill in Stakeford, with Punch Taverns investing £280,000 in a complete refurbishment of the popular local, and the results are stunning.

The Cherry Tree is still very much a family business, with the Turner family now in their 15th year of running the popular local bar. This investment is testament to how well the pub is doing, and is a mark of the ambition of both the family and the brewery to take the pub forward. The new look contemporary bar / diner is open plan and has a natural flow. The design has been well thought out and gives the whole venue a modern yet warming and welcoming feel to it. The dining room and conservatory cater for up to 100 diners and, when those areas are full, customers can also dine in the newly transformed bar area. To go with the new look there is also a brand new menu, a contemporary twist on good honest pub grub! The menu is packed with a range of burgers, grill, salads, sandwiches and sharing platters. Whilst the menu has been freshened up, it is still full of traditional favourites, like the popular All-Day Breakfast, the Whitby Scampi, Beer Battered Cod and Cumberland Sausage and Mash. The Cherry Tree are pleased to announce a number of special offers, including 2 main courses for £12 (Monday to Friday 12-6), as well as 2 for 1 on desserts when you buy 2 main courses. Just so the younger ones aren’t left out, the ‘Kids eat for £1’ offer is another fantastic deal and is available with a full paying adult up until 5pm. The Christmas Fayre menu has just been launched, and is available from mid-November, with 3 courses only £14.95 and, for those of you who are organised, early bookings are being rewarded with a free bottle of Prosecco!

The drinks range has also been updated, with real ale favourite Doom Bar proving a very popular new addition. The new look games room boasts a championship standard darts board and a new pool table. The bright and airy room also has a large screen TV, showing most sports events on Sky Sports and BT Sport, and they even have a ‘Soundjack Jukebox App’, where you can control the jukebox via your smart phone! The Cherry Tree have a ladies darts team and a men’s pool team, and offer free pool every Monday night.

TO GO WITH THE NEW LOOK THERE IS ALSO A BRAND NEW MENU, A CONTEMPORARY TWIST ON GOOD HONEST PUB GRUB!

The pub will continue to host their twice weekly quiz nights on a Sunday and Tuesday evening, with prizes and a free supper! Saturday nights are always popular at the Cherry Tree, and now they have Acoustic Saturdays, with live entertainment featuring some of the best local artists. Next year they will be taking the live music one step further, with an acoustic music festival in the summer. The cider fest will also be returning in August 2018. With a stunning new look, a mouth-watering new menu, and a calendar packed with exciting events, what more could you want from a local! To keep updated with food and drink offers, live music nights, sporting events and much more, visit the Cherry Tree Facebook page. The Cherry Tree, Riversdale Ave, Choppington NE62 5JZ. IT’S CHRISTMAS

CONCERT TIME AGAIN Christmas music and carols are enjoyed by nearly everyone and choirs always delighted to sing them. Ashington & District Male Voice Choir is no exception and December is always a busy time for the gentlemen. The choir also has its traditional Christmas Concert, a well respected feature in the local Festive Calendar and this year is no exception. St. John’s Church Seaton Hirst once again hosts the event on Saturday 9th December at 7-00pm. Tickets are only £7 and the programme promises to bring a selection of traditional Christmas music as well as variety of choral favourites to the audience who will also be encouraged to join in. The choir’s strength has continued to grow and it’s hoped that this will continue with more prospective members coming to Stakeford & Bomarsund Community & Social Centre on Thursday evenings to ‘give singing a try’.

Unfortunately the current Musical Director, Jonathan Shaw, who has done a wonderful job for the last few years, is having to relinquish the post and it’s hoped that the position will be filled in the near future. The Christmas Concert will be Jonathan’s farewell to the choir’s own promotions. Tickets for the concert are available from St. John’s Church, Al’s Store on Station Road Ashington, Choir Secretary Colin Prow tel 01670 815534 or at the door. See www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org.

utter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.

Axa, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year, and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home. Local GutterPRO expert Larry Thompson says “Contrary to popular belief, moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds & grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Larry says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.” Recently, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removes black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal. Larry continues “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agents photos.” GutterPRO has had many five-star Facebook reviews. GutterPRO can be reached on 0191 6540035 or visit the website GutterPRO.co.uk. Is it time you took a closer interest in your gutters before the winter?

CHRISTMAS DINING

A FESTIVE

FEAST Christmas is a time for family and friends to indulge in delicious food and winter tipples. With this in mind, here are five of the best local venues to help you celebrate the festive season in style.

THE HASTINGS

The Hastings is a community pub steeped in tradition. Built over 175 years ago, it was purpose built as a public house, and has served that function ever since. Current owners Peter and Paul Thompson have run the pub for the last 4 years, and the Hastings has gone from strength to strength during this time. They have been nominated for, and won, a number of awards, both local and national, and they have an excellent reputation for both their food and their choice of real ales. They pride themselves on using fresh and where possible locally sourced ingredients throughout their dishes. A good honest local pub, serving good honest local food is how they describe themselves, although this may be selling themselves a little bit short, as their food elevates the Hastings to more than the usual local pub. With a good selection of wines and malt whiskies, alongside branded ‘house’ spirits and an extensive premium spirit range, they believe there is a satisfying drink for everyone. ChristWmas Fayre Served 1st December – 12th January 12pm – 8pm Monday to Saturday 2 courses £12.95 , 3 courses £16.95 Seaton Delaval, Whitley Bay NE25 0QH www.thehastingsarms.com

COOK & BARKER INN

A real traditional Northumbrian Country Inn’ is the perfect description for The Cook & Barker Inn. From its elevated location in the picturesque village of Newton on the Moor, the Inn enjoys outstanding views of both the Northumberland Coast and the Cheviot hills. The combination of excellent cuisine and a delightfully traditional warm and welcoming atmosphere have meant the Cook & Barker is always one of the most popular destinations in the region for a hearty Christmas Fayre. Christmas Fayre 4 courses £22

NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS

This rural haven offers rustic yet contemporary food, regularly hosting local produce from Blagdon Estate, and representing excellent quality and value. The Ridley Arms is a favourite with locals and tourists alike and is in a handy location just off the A1. The chef has decided to give pride of place to traditional dishes, giving them his own personal style. There is an original and delicious angle to every dish with no pretension, just good quality, lovingly prepared and well-presented food. Good old fashioned hospitality at it’s best at this popular pub.

Situated approximately 1 mile from the A1, The Northumberland Arms was built in the 1820’s by Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland as a Coaching Inn where his coach horses, family and visitors could be refreshed before reaching Alnwick Castle. The building has been lovingly restored (and not without its major ‘Grand Designs’ pitfalls), and presents the ultimate in chic, eclectic styling, whilst remaining warm comfortable and welcoming. Its six luxury ensuite guest rooms were awarded a 4* Gold rating in 2014 and a 5* rating in 2015. Wholesome, locally sourced food is served daily in the recently completed River Room, as well as the restaurant and bar/lounge area; cooked to perfection by a brigade of AA Rosette and Michellin experienced chefs. Christmas Fayre Starting from £14.95 for 1 course up to £26.95 for 5 courses.

WHAT IS REIKI? You may have heard of Reiki, but do you know what it can do for you? Dawn Wilson visited Heaven & Earth in Bedlington to find out more.

D

eveloped in the early 20th Century, Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a safe and soothing Japanese complimentary therapy, but can seem mysterious to those experiencing it for the first time.

Having never had a Reiki treatment myself, I booked in for a session with Lindsey Foley, a Reiki Master Teacher at Heaven and Earth, just off the front street in Bedlington to find out more. The Japanese word Reiki means universal energy. Eastern medicine systems work with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. Reiki is best described as hands on healing, used as a well-being treatment, in which a Reiki practitioner aims to change and balance the energy fields in and around your body to help on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level. Before the treatment, Lindsey discussed with me what Reiki is and how it works and then invited me to lie down on the bed in the beautiful treatment room. You don’t have to get undressed for the treatment, I was fully clothed, covered with a blanket and with the lights dimmed. Soft music was played to create a sense of calm. Both warm and professional, Lindsey created a safe and serene environment making it easy to let go and relax into the treatment. Lindsey began by putting her hands gently on my head. Within minutes, my restless mind was stilled. She then worked her way down towards my feet by placing her hands on non-intrusive parts of my body. Everyone has a different sensation during the treatment, all depending upon what they need from the treatment. I felt incredibly tranquil and experienced a drifting sensation. You might feel a tingling sensation, a deep relaxation, or warmth or coolness throughout your body. Or, you might not feel anything at all. Practitioners say this doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. My treatment lasted for around an hour. I felt deeply relaxed afterwards and very calm, akin to a really good night’s sleep. If you are open to the theory, it can be a deeply relaxing experience, and Lindsey explained that it can be particularly helpful with recovery from illness or 20

stress and coping with difficult situations. If you feel you need to take some time out for yourself then you should give Reiki a try. Reiki is completely safe and therefore suitable for pregnant women, children and those with an illness. ARRGH!

THE AGONY OF

TOOTHACHE!

JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, EXPLAINS HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM GUM DISEASE

T

oothache is truly horrible; I think because it is in your head the pain in inescapable and there can be times when you really do feel like hitting your head against a wall.

As a dentist I too have had toothache, (pain with a partially erupted wisdom tooth), and when I spoke to my Mum and told her she said "Good! I'm pleased you know what it is like!" No sympathy there whatsoever. Here are just some of the reasons why you may experience toothache. This list is certainly not a complete one, but includes the most common and is not intended for you to self diagnosis your problem. If you are experiencing any dental pain then it is always advisable to seek professional advice from your dentist. Being registered with a dentist and attending regularly for check-ups is so important in both preventing problems, but also you have a greater chance of getting an emergency appointment. If you are not registered with a dentist, it may be difficult to get an emergency appointment with a dentist when you need one the most. Toothache may present in a number of different ways; it may come and go, be mild or severe, last a few seconds, or be constant. The pain may be made worse by some things such as hot, cold,

sweet or chewing. A tooth causing pain may be difficult for you to locate; for example sometimes pain from a lower tooth may make you feel as if the pain is from a top tooth and the pain may even spread up to your ear.

PAIN FROM THE NERVE OF THE TOOTH

Pain from the nerve of a tooth can range from sensitivity lasting seconds when you drink or eat something hot or cold, to a raging constant pain when nothing will help to take it away.

SENSITIVITY

When a tooth is healthy the outer enamel protects the crown of the tooth above the gum, and an outer layer called cementum protects the root. Inside these outer protective shells is the dentine and in the very middle of the tooth is the pulp, which consists of the nerve and blood supply. The dentine is made up of lots of microscopic hollow tubes that run from the outside of the dentine below the protective outer layers towards the centre of the tooth towards the pulp. If these tubes are exposed for example either due to a cavity, a broken or cracked tooth or recession which exposes the root, this allows any hot, cold or even sweet foods to penetrate the tubes and stimulate the nerve. This is what you will feel as sensitivity.

www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk

INFLAMMATION OF THE NERVE - PULPITIS

Inflammation of the pulp is called pulpitis and will cause pain and toothache. It can be caused by decay, cracked and broken teeth, trauma, and even after fillings or other restorative treatment such as crowns. The inflammation of the pulp can either be reversible or irreversible.

REVERSIBLE PULPITIS

With reversible pulpitis the problem causing the inflammation of the pulp can be treated so the pain will settle and go. If you are suffering from reversible pulpitis you would usually experience pain that lasts for only a few seconds when the tooth is exposed for example to cold or sweet, but then goes as soon as the cold or sweet stimulus is removed. 24

IRREVERSIBLE PULPITIS

However, if you are suffering from irreversible pulpitis the inflammation of the pulp cannot be stopped. The resulting pain can come on by itself at any time. Also anything hot or cold can stimulate the pain which will also linger for a long time after the stimulus is removed. The pain may wake you up at night or actually prevent you from going to sleep in the first place. The pulp or nerve will eventually die and this can lead to an infection or abscess. If you are suffering from irreversible pulpitis then the only treatment is either a root canal filling or extracting the tooth.

DENTAL ABSCESS

A dental abscess is a collection of pus that usually causes a swelling in the mouth. The abscess may

Obviously nobody wants to have toothache, so we all must try our best to prevent dental disease. In particular we all need to: • • • •

be at the bottom of the roots if the nerve of the tooth is dead and becomes infected. There can be a number of causes such as decay, if the tooth has had extensive dental treatment already, is cracked or traumatised. Alternatively an abscess can be due to an infection of the gum around the tooth and can be caused by gum disease, or food/debris being wedged down the gum causing an infection, or an unerupted or partially erupted wisdom tooth. If you think you may have a dental abscess, you must see a dentist to diagnose the cause of your problem but also provide the appropriate treatment. As well as pain, the other symptoms you may experience from a dental abscess are: • swelling • redness of the affected area • horrible taste • a high temperature, fever and not feeling well.

PAIN FROM YOUR WISDOM TEETH

Sometimes erupting wisdom teeth can cause discomfort of the surrounding gum, particularly if there is not enough space, or the tooth becomes impacted against the tooth in front. When a wisdom tooth is partially erupted the surrounding gum can become swollen and painful. This is called pericoronitis. The gum around a lower wisdom tooth in particular can be a little loose, meaning food and bacteria can get underneath the gum and this can develop into an abscess.

DENTAL PAIN FROM YOUR SINUSES

The air filled spaces in your cheekbones and forehead are called your sinuses. The roots of the upper back teeth can be very close to the sinuses and can be affected by any sinus problem. Any pain due to sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) or infection, can be mistaken for pain in the upper back teeth.

PAIN FROM YOUR JAW JOINT

(TMD OR TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DYSFUNCTION)

Problems with your jaw and the muscles that control it is called temporomandibular disorder or TMD. The exact cause of the problem may not be clear but may be as a result of injury, arthritis or stress. With our ever increasing hectic lifestyles and busy schedules, more and more of us clench or grind our teeth, particularly at night. This can cause pain in the jaw joint and the associated muscles which can spread to the cheek, ear and temple region when you open your mouth wide, chew or even talk. Your teeth may feel uncomfortable on biting and you may experience a clicking or a grating sound when you open or close your mouth. Other symptoms may include headaches, migraines, earache, neck and shoulder ache. If you have any dental pain or problem you should contact your dentist for a professional examination to receive the correct diagnosis and treatment.

BE MOUTH

AWARE 45 SECONDS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

A

re you able to recognise the changes in your mouth? That’s the question posed by Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice as they support a charity campaign to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

The dental practice, based on 30 Front Street East, Bedlington is urging residents of Northumberland to be more Mouth-aware and recognise the early warning signs of mouth cancer. With awareness of the disease remaining alarmingly low, Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice say that a simple 45 second check is often all that’s needed to identify anything unusual and alert you to seek professional guidance. Joanne Duggan, principal dentist from Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice says: Early diagnosis transforms our chances of beating mouth cancer from 50 to 90 percent, so it is crucial you know what to look out for and you do not hesitate in seeking advice from a health professional. It’s important to be aware of any changes occurring inside your mouth. Potential signs of mouth cancer may include: a mouth ulcer that does not heal within three weeks: red or white patches in the mouth: unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area. Quite often it is easier to notice lumps and bumps on the outside of the body or to dismiss a mouth ulcer. Most of us will spend at least a few minutes every day in front of a mirror brushing our teeth, so while we’re there it makes sense to have a quick look inside our mouth.

• •

• • •

If you keep a lookout for these symptoms then a simple 45 second check really could save your life. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, please speak to your dentist or a doctor. Be aware of lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol that can increase your risk of oral cancer.

Mouth cancer is one of the UK’s fastest increasing cancers, with cases rising by a third in the last decade alone. Survival rates of mouth cancer have not improved in the last 20 years and the oral health charity is concerned that too many mouth cancers are being diagnosed at a late stage, significantly reducing our chance to beat the disease. CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE reports: “Mouth cancer can appear anywhere in the mouth including the lips, tongue, cheek, throat and gums. Mouth cancer can have a devastating effect on a person’s life, impacting on their breathing, eating and speech. Reconstructive surgery could also change their appearance while the experience often has an impact on confidence and self-esteem.” “During every dental check-up, your dentist will do a visual examination for mouth cancer and look for anything that might be a cause for concern. That’s why it’s so important to keep regular dental check-ups; it’s not just about the health of our teeth and gums – a trip to the dentist could really be a life saver.” So, If in doubt, get checked out! NEW BOOK EXPLORES THE MILITARY HERITAGE OF NORTHUMBERLAND The military heritage of Northumberland is without doubt one of the richest in all the British Isles, and the latest title in Amberley’s new military heritage series will make for a fantastic read for those with an interest in military history. Illustrated throughout with over 100 wonderful images, Northumberland’s Military Heritage by Neil R. Storey charts the military heritage of Northumberland, from Roman times to the present day. By the nature of it being England’s most northern county its borders have seen many a bloody clash and battle since the earliest times. The Roman Hadrian’s Wall stretches along the north of the county and is dotted with forts, garrisons and fortified settlements along its length. The first Viking raid was carried out upon Lindisfarne in 793. From the 13th century and for 400 years afterwards there were border raids by reivers and in terms of troop numbers alone the largest battle fought between the kingdoms of England and Scotland was fought in the county at Flodden in 1513. There have been uprisings and rebels, the Battle of Newburn was fought here during the English Civil War and many a noble Northumberland family was ruined in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. It is hardly surprising that within the boundaries of

8

county can be found more castles than anywhere else in Britain and as a breed of fighting men the steel of the Northumbrians is like no other. The men of the North were the backbone of the British Army, a number of regiments have recruited here including the Coldstream Guards, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and of course our very own Northumberland Fusiliers ‘The Fighting Fifth.’ They all served with distinction wherever they fought from the Peninsular War to South Africa through two World Wars and beyond. Neil R. Storey is an award winning military historian who knows and loves Northumberland and his book will interest anyone keen to know more about Northumberland’s remarkable military history. Available online at www.amberley-books.com or in all good bookshops. ISBN: 978-1-4456-7324-0

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.
