ould you like to spend the summer working on some of Tyne and Wear’s most popular beaches? The RNLI is searching for new recruits and has opened applications for beach lifeguards and face-to-face fundraisers.
Both roles are essential in reducing the number of people who drown on the North East coast, and keep people safe by providing safety advice to holidaymakers. Successful applicants receive first-class training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques. Ben Mitchell, RNLI area lifesaving manager, said: “Working as a lifeguard has got to be one of the best summer jobs - you get to call the beach your office for a start. But, far more importantly than that, you are there to make sure the public enjoy it in the safest possible way. The RNLI provides local summer patrols at Sandhaven, Whitley Bay North and South, Cullercoats, Tynemouth Longsands and King Edward’s Bay amongst other local beaches. Ben said the role is demanding and will require commitment, skill and a clear head. He added: “We’re looking for people with courage, determination and the ability to draw on their training and make the right decision if someone’s life is in danger. It is an incredibly rewarding role.” Face-to-face fundraisers will work alongside lifeguards to provide beach visitors with important safety advice. They will play a vital role in saving lives by educating the public on risks at the coast. Applicants need to be dynamic and act as a positive ambassador - encouraging support for this lifesaving charity is just one of the things the fundraisers will do over the summer. Callum Moffat, RNLI face-to-face fundraising manager, said: “A good fundraiser generally has to be friendly and relaxed, but also energetic, able to talk to anyone and be passionate about what they do. We provide quality training which ensures new fundraisers feel confident and capable in the role.” To apply for one of the roles visit summerjobs.rnli.org or search for #BestSummerJob on Facebook and Twitter.

WORK BEGINS ON HIRST PARK RESTORATION
W
ork has recently started on the first stage of the multi-million pound project to restore Hirst Park to its former glory.
Last year Northumberland County Council was successful in securing a £2.29million ‘Parks for People’ grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The National Lottery grant is also supported by contributions from Ashington Town Council, the Ashington Leisure Partnership and the County Council, bringing the total project value to £2.7m over the next five years. The funding will ensure that the Flower Park is rejuvenated and landscaped, a new play area developed and greenhouses and buildings restored to provide much improved public spaces. Now the first stage of tree works is getting underway - involving the removal of a number of trees which are dead, dying, dangerous or in poor health. The work is due to be complete by the end of March. Replacement tree planting will take place next winter and the work has been carefully timed to avoid bird nesting and bat roosting seasons. The Hirst Park Revival project will also deliver: a new formal garden modelled on the original Hirst Park sunken garden that was lost in the mid

t Benet Biscop Catholic Academy provides Catholic education for 11 -18 year olds in the region.
Mr Todd, the Headteacher proudly describes this as a wonderful nurturing school with strong values, and a commitment to ensuring that each student receives intensive individual support. Through this, our students rapidly develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities they need to lead successful and fulfilling lives. The aim of St Benet Biscop sixth form is to enable all students at this crucial juncture in their life to take charge of their learning, make decisions based on Christian values, live in the world independently and meet the challenges of the world today. Mr Maughan, Head of Sixth Form explains that, “we aim for excellence both in and out of the classroom, seeking to develop the qualities of inquisitiveness, resilience, independence, humility and kindness”. Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2016 HMI inspectors were particularly impressed with the steps the School has taken to, “develop the wider skills of sixth-form students”. Current students through their roles as peer mentors, and charity and enterprise leaders take on an active role in the school community and act as role models to younger pupils. Pupils access a broad enrichment programme, including careers-related work experience. Mr Maughan puts the sixth form value down to a can-do, will-do culture. St Benet Biscop, like all Catholic schools, has a shared sense of vision and values for both students and staff that are affirmed within the daily life of the school. Furthermore, the school nurtures a culture of ambition which contributes significantly to standards of achievement and results in most students progressing to 12
university, employment or higher level apprenticeships. There is a varied curriculum on offer allowing students to select a combination of subjects that support their future aspirations. Subjects include Business Studies, Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, French, Geography, History, Maths, Physics, Religious Studies, Art, Applied General Business, Drama & Theatre Studies, Health & Social Care, Media Studies, Design Technology: Product Design, BTEC Level 3 Sport, Psychology and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

EXTRA TIME FOR MORPETH'S FLORAL CLOCK
O
ne of Morpeth’s most famous timepieces is on the move to allow investigation of its condition and options for its possible restoration.
The floral clock in Carlisle Park which was presented to the borough of Morpeth by James Fairbairn Smith of Detroit in 1972, has been carefully removed and has been taken down to renowned clockmakers Smith of Derby for detailed analysis on whether the mechanism can be repaired. Northumberland County Council was approached about the possibility of reinstating the flower clock by The Friends of Morpeth’s Floral Clock and are working with the group to explore options and costs that would be associated with this - and how they might be met - including the possibility of sponsorship. A team has also visited Whitby to look into how the floral clock there is managed and financed. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “We are pleased to be working with the Friends of the Floral Clock to explore what will be required to restore and maintain it in the future. “Smiths of Derby have a history going back more than 150 years and will be able to advise us about the options available and costs associated with the repair and restoration of the clock, so that the Friends Group know what funds will need to be raised.” 16
The Friends of Morpeth’s Floral Clock’s goal is to have the clock returned to its former glory in time for the summer judging of the 2018 Britain in Bloom competition. Barbara Ross from the Friends of Morpeth’s Floral Clock said: “It has been wonderful to see

this project coming together, and we are delighted at the positivity and encouragement that we have received from Northumberland County Council, and the partnership we have forged. “It has been a bit like a fairy story: the bringing together of the Jobson Family with the family of James Fairbairn Smith, who donated the Clock in honour of his childhood friend. The people of Morpeth have really embraced this as part of their heritage with £2,000 of public donations received within a week and 900 people supporting us on Facebook! “This will put Morpeth on the map as with traditional carpet bedding we believe it will be one of its kind in England!” Anyone wishing to support or donate to the clock fund can email the group at morpethfloralclock@gmail.com

WHAT IS REIKI? You may have heard of Reiki, but do you know what it can do for you? Dawn Wilson visited Heaven & Earth in Bedlington to find out more.
D
eveloped in the early 20th Century, Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a safe and soothing Japanese complimentary therapy, but can seem mysterious to those experiencing it for the first time.
Having never had a Reiki treatment myself, I booked in for a session with Lindsey Foley, a Reiki Master Teacher at Heaven and Earth, just off the front street in Bedlington to find out more. The Japanese word Reiki means universal energy. Eastern medicine systems work with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. Reiki is best described as hands on healing, used as a well-being treatment, in which a Reiki practitioner aims to change and balance the energy fields in and around your body to help on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level. Before the treatment, Lindsey discussed with me what Reiki is and how it works and then invited me to lie down on the bed in the beautiful treatment room. You don’t have to get undressed for the treatment, I was fully clothed, covered with a blanket and with the lights dimmed. Soft music was played to create a sense of calm. Both warm and professional, Lindsey created a safe and serene environment making it easy to let go and relax into the treatment. Lindsey began by putting her hands gently on my head. Within minutes, my restless mind was stilled. She then worked her way down towards my feet by placing her hands on non-intrusive parts of my body. Everyone has a different sensation during the treatment, all depending upon what they need from the treatment. I felt incredibly tranquil and experienced a drifting sensation. You might feel a tingling sensation, a deep relaxation, or warmth or coolness throughout your body. Or, you might not feel anything at all. Practitioners say this doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. My treatment lasted for around an hour. I felt deeply relaxed afterwards and very calm, akin to a really good night’s sleep. If you are open to the theory, it can be a deeply relaxing experience, and Lindsey explained that it can be particularly helpful with recovery from illness or 24

stress and coping with difficult situations. If you feel you need to take some time out for yourself then you should give Reiki a try. ALMOND BISCOTTI RECIPE The name biscotti literally means twice baked, which gives you a little preview into how these crunchy and highly dunkable Italian biscuits are made. Recipes for these incredibly versatile biscuits have been traced back to the 13th Century, and it’s pretty much anything goes when it comes to combinations of nuts and dried fruit. The traditional way to eat them is by dipping them in sweet wine, but they’re just as good in tea and coffee.
INGREDIENTS 300g plain flour ⁕ 200g mixed whole almonds & hazelnuts ⁕ 1 tsp baking powder, heaped ⁕ 2 eggs 175g golden caster sugar ⁕ 1/2 tsp almond extract
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Place the nuts on a baking tray and toast for 8-10 minutes until light brown and fragrant. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before roughly chopping them. Once the nuts have been removed, turn the oven down to 150°C. Sift the flour and baking powder into a medium bowl. In a separate smaller bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar and almond extract together until smooth and glossy. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix to form a dough, adding the nuts half way through. Give your work surface a light dusting of flour and turn out your biscotti dough. Create a log shape about 5-6cm wide & 2-3cm thick.
10.
11. 12. 13.
Transfer the dough to a baking tray lined with baking parchment. If you can see any nuts poking out, push them back into the dough so they don’t catch and burn in the oven. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until they’re firm, then remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes. Cut into 2cm slices, place the biscotti back on the baking tray, and return to the oven to bake until crisp for around 20 minutes, turning half way through. Remove from the oven and allow to cool, then enjoy.
✃
METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

COULD 2018 BE THE YEAR YOU
STOP SMOKING? JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, EXPLAINS THE IMPACT OF SMOKING ON YOUR MOUTH HEALTH
H
appy New Year! I hope you had a great festive season and did not indulge too much. This year could be the time for a fresh start to improve your health and wellbeing. If you are a smoker, why not choose 2018 as the time to quit?
Here at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we always discuss with our patients the benefit of stopping smoking. If you are worried or feel you won't be able to manage it alone, there is a smoking cessation service in Northumberland where you will receive all the help and support you need. The first step of picking up the phone is usually the hardest. Call 01670 813135. You can call them yourself for an initial chat without the need of a referral from your doctor, dentist or any other health care professional. If you want their help to stop smoking just make the phone call yourself!
Did you know the success rate for quitting smoking is much greater when you are supported by a cessation service rather than doing it alone? I’m sure those of you that smoke are now rolling your eyes and feeling thoroughly picked on. I do appreciate some of you enjoy smoking and actually do not want to give up; you are already aware of the risk of heart and lung disease, diabetes and increased cancer risks. Sometimes however it is the smaller things that irritate people the most. Have you thought about the effects on your mouth when you light up? Putting the cigarette, cigar or pipe between your lips and breathing the smoke past your teeth, gums, tongue and all the other surfaces of your mouth and throat has a massive impact before reaching everywhere else in your body. There are also similar damaging affects if you are in the habit of chewing tobacco. Perhaps knowing the impact on your mouth may help your decision in choosing to quit for yourself. Turn over for some examples... www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk
“
Smokers are 3 times more likely to develop cancer in the mouth than non- smokers.
STAINED AND DISCOLOURED TEETH
This really does irritate most smokers. Brown and yellow staining due to nicotine and tar is unsightly. Because it is visible it usually affects smokers more than worrying about the potential of future life-threatening smokingrelated diseases. Let's be honest, everyone (including me) would love to have nicer, whiter looking teeth. This could be a great reason to stop as most of the stains caused by smoking can be removed with simple cleaning methods used by your dentist or hygienist. We do not recommend regular use of smokers toothpaste as these can be very abrasive and cause damage to the surfaces of your teeth. For patients whom have their teeth bleached (which should only be performed with a dental professional), we also advise to abstain from smoking as this will hinder the whitening effect and could be a waste of your time and money. Smokers also get more tartar, or calculus, build up on their teeth which is also unsightly and makes teeth much more difficult to keep clean. These deposits are stuck hard onto your teeth and will need to be professionally cleaned off by your dental professional.
BAD BREATH
I'm sure all of us know an ex-smoker whom since quitting has become really aware of the smell that smoking causes to clothes, hair, homes and cars. I'm afraid the smell of smoke is not something any of us could describe as pleasant or fragrant! Well, smoking can also cause
halitosis or bad breath. I have to say as a dentist most people are mortified if they have had an Indian or Italian meal heavily laced with garlic the night before their appointment. Their concern about the smell of their breath does distress them. (I do reassure my patients the smell of garlic does not bother me at all.) Stopping smoking will help reduce the risk of bad breath.
BLACK HAIRY TONGUE
Well, this does sound very unusual but unfortunately this condition looks exactly as its name suggests. This condition is when the tiny fibres, called papillae, on the surface of your tongue become longer and discolour to give the appearance of brown or black hairs on it. People whom have this condition are usually heavy smokers. Although not the prettiest looking, black hairy tongue is benign, there are no symptoms associated and no treatment is needed.
GUM DISEASE
Gum disease is the most common reason why adults loose teeth. Missing teeth can have a really negative impact on anyone as it can affect appearance, the ability to eat properly and our general feeling of well- being, plus there may be the additional cost and time of dental treatment needed to replace them. There is a very definite link between smoking and gum disease. Smoking reduces the success of any treatment you may receive for gum disease. It is a definite fact that smokers do loose more teeth due to gum disease than non- smokers.
LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE
Being a non-smoker is therefore one of the best ways to improve your gum health. Smokers have more hard calculus and plaque build up on their teeth. There is also a reduced blood supply to the gums, meaning infected gums do not heal as well. A reduced blood supply to the gums is not healthy and could hide the fact you have gum disease for some time as your gums may not bleed. This is why it is important to visit your dentist regularly as they will screen at every check up for the presence of gum disease.
CANNOT TASTE OR SMELL FOOD AS WELL
Smoking reduces the sense of smell, which also reduces the sense of taste. Some ex-smokers report enjoying their food much more after quitting due to the better smell and taste of the food they ate. The improved smell could be why ex smokers have a heightened awareness of the smell of smoking as mentioned above.
NOT HEALING WELL AFTER EXTRACTIONS, GUM TREATMENT OR ANY SURGERY IN THE MOUTH
Smoking reduces the ability to heal. Any wound needs a good blood supply with plenty of oxygen to repair successfully. Unfortunately smoking weakens our immune system and the ability to fight infection, but also narrows blood vessels so by reducing the nutrients and oxygen supply to a wound. The healing process can therefore be delayed. If any of you have had the misfortune to suffer from a dry socket after an extraction then I sympathise with you as you know all too well the pain associated with this problem. A dry socket is truly awful and can be as bad as severe toothache. When a tooth is taken out the hole that is left, the socket, fills with a blood clot. If this blood clot comes out too soon the bone can become exposed and inflamed. It is this inflammation of the bone, osteitis, that is a dry socket, and my goodness it is truly horrible! Anyone can suffer from a dry socket, however it is more common in smokers due to the reduced blood supply and healing of the area, but with the addition of the smoking action, "dragging" can help dislodge the blood clot from the socket. It is normal to be told to abstain from smoking after you have a tooth extracted to try to reduce the risk of this truly awful condition.
REDUCED SUCCESS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and involves surgery to place a tita nium implant into the jaw bone, then it is usual to allow a period of time (months) for the bone to fuse and integrate with the implant. The false tooth or teeth are then placed on the top of the implant. There is a need for any patient who wants an implant to be committed to surgery, maintaining good oral hygiene and maintenance of the implant, and be prepared to meet the financial implication associated, (costs are in the thousands). I think there is a common misconception that when implants are placed, that's it, you don't need to do anything with them for life. This simply is not the
Bedlingtonshire
Dental Practice
case as they need continuous maintenance and good care, without which they can fail. There is an increased risk of implant failure in smokers due to the reduction in the ability to heal after surgery but also the increased risk of gum problems around the implant, in particular periimplantitis. This is a destructive inflammatory process that affects the gum and bone around an implant and can lead to it loosening and having to be removed. If any smokers are thinking about dental implants, then certainly quitting is advisable before you commit to such a lot of extensive and invasive dental work with the significant costs associated.
ORAL CANCER
Sorry, it would be neglectful of me not to mention the C word. I will keep it short. A few simple facts for you : Smokers are 3 times more likely to develop cancer in the mouth than non- smokers. Mouth cancer is becoming more common in the UK, however it is reported that approximately 9 out of 10 cases could be prevented with lifestyle changes. Smoking, chewing betel nut or tobacco all increases your risk of mouth cancer.

E-CIGARETTES
I know many people now use e cigarettes as an alternative, and have in fact used them to quit smoking, however as these are a relatively new concept and with a lack of research, the long term effects of their use is unknown. I would always advise you to seek advice from your local smoking cessation team or doctor to discuss all the smoking cessation products available to you . Having read through this piece numerous times, I do feel terrible as it is quite hard hitting about the negative effects of smoking in the mouth, but it is a true representation of the facts. If you are a smoker, are aware of all the facts, (and not just the ones mentioned here), and accept the risks associated and still choose to smoke, then absolutely I agree you should not be nagged repeatedly about quitting. It is my opinion that giving up is something you must decide and want for yourself and not just to please others. After all this is an addiction and giving up will be hard, but there is help out there if you need it. STUNNING NEW LOOK FOR CHERRY TREE BAR & GRILL These are tough times for the English local pub, with many closing and others hanging on by the skin of their teeth. However, one local venue is bucking the trend, and it is refreshing to see investment and ambition in equal measures.
S
eptember saw the opening of the newly refurbished Cherry Tree Bar and Grill in Stakeford, with Punch Taverns investing £280,000 in a complete refurbishment of the popular local, and the results are stunning.
The Cherry Tree is still very much a family business, with the Turner family now in their 15th year of running the popular local bar. This investment is testament to how well the pub is doing, and is a mark of the ambition of both the family and the brewery to take the pub forward. The new look contemporary bar / diner is open plan and has a natural flow. The design has been well thought out and gives the whole venue a modern yet warming and welcoming feel to it. The dining room and conservatory cater for up to 100 diners and, when those areas are full, customers can also dine in the newly transformed bar area. To go with the new look there is also a brand new menu, a contemporary twist on good honest pub grub! The menu is packed with a range of burgers, grill, salads, sandwiches and sharing platters. Whilst the menu has been freshened up, it is still full of traditional favourites, like the popular All-Day Breakfast, the Whitby Scampi, Beer Battered Cod and Cumberland Sausage and Mash. The Cherry Tree are pleased to announce a number of special offers, including 2 main courses for £12 (Monday to Friday 12-6), as well as 2 for 1 on desserts when you buy 2 main courses. Just so the younger ones aren’t left out, the ‘Kids eat for £1’ offer is another fantastic deal and is available with a full paying adult up until 5pm. The Christmas Fayre menu has just been launched, and is available from mid-November, with 3 courses only £14.95 and, for those of you who are organised, early bookings are being rewarded with a free bottle of Prosecco!
The drinks range has also been updated, with real ale favourite Doom Bar proving a very popular new addition. The new look games room boasts a championship standard darts board and a new pool table. The bright and airy room also has a large screen TV, showing most sports events on Sky Sports and BT Sport, and they even have a ‘Soundjack Jukebox App’, where you can control the jukebox via your smart phone! The Cherry Tree have a ladies darts team and a men’s pool team, and offer free pool every Monday night.

TO GO WITH THE NEW LOOK THERE IS ALSO A BRAND NEW MENU, A CONTEMPORARY TWIST ON GOOD HONEST PUB GRUB!
The pub will continue to host their twice weekly quiz nights on a Sunday and Tuesday evening, with prizes and a free supper! WHEN DID YOU LAST HAVE YOUR GUTTERS CLEARED OUT?

G
utter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.
Axa, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year, and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home. Local GutterPRO expert Larry Thompson says “Contrary to popular belief, moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds & grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Larry says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.” Recently, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removes black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal. Larry continues “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agents photos.” GutterPRO has had many five-star Facebook reviews. GutterPRO can be reached on 0191 6540035 or visit the website GutterPRO.co.uk. Is it time you took a closer interest in your gutters before the winter?

WORK STARTS ON NEW NORTHUMBERLAND COASTAL PATH
W
ork is due to start on the Northumberland stretch of the England Coast Path which is set to become the longest managed and way marked coastal path in the world.
The 2,795 mile route will follow the coastline of England and Wales and is due to open in 2020. It will pass stunning beaches, castles, fishing villages, famous seaside resorts and dramatic landscape features, offering walkers the opportunity to experience some of the country’s most varied coastline. In Northumberland the coastal path will follow a route from the Scottish Borders right down the coastline via Berwick and Bamburgh to Seaton Sluice. Northumberland County Council will carry out the work to establish the path and will be responsible for its ongoing maintenance. Natural England will fund the establishment of the route and 75 per cent of the ongoing maintenance costs. Work on the first section of the route between Seaton Sluice and Amble is to commence over the coming weeks. An initial grant of £149,250 has been awarded to Northumberland County Council by Natural England to cover these costs. Northumberland County Councillor Glen Sanderson Cabinet Member for the environment and local services said: “ This new path will be a great addition to those who already know our superb coastline but it will open up new opportunities for visitors who want to explore the wonderful assets we have in

our county. Additionally the path will help draw in visitors all year round and help provide a boost to local businesses along its length.” The new route will, where possible, link into the existing Northumberland Coastal Path, but sections will need to be added to allow it to directly follow the coastline of the county. The Seaton Sluice to Amble stretch of the route has already been agreed by the Secretary of State and was proposed by Natural England following extensive research and consultation with landowners and Northumberland County Council. It will follow existing pathways on council land and recorded highways and footways and so only minor work such as the installation of gates and signage is needed.
“
The 2,795 mile route will follow the coastline of England and Wales and is due to open in 2020.
Work is ongoing with the planning of other sections of the route in the county. New stretches of grass pathway will need to be created between Newbiggin and Lynemouth and between Cresswell and Druridge. A further two sections of the Northumberland route - Amble to Bamburgh and Bamburgh to the Scottish Borders, are still in the research and consultation phase. www.northumberlandcoastpath.org

INTRODUCING
STAIRLUX BY WESTLINE
W
ith over 30 years professional experience, Westline are a family run company who designs, manufactures and fits custom-made luxury stairs and beautiful balconies along with balustrades.
Westline know that a unique, made-to-order, staircase can become the ultimate focal design feature in an attractive home and have introduced the perfect product, StairLux, the next step in staircase design. A high-end, customisable product, StairLux allows customers to become their own designer and create the staircase of their dreams. Experts in their field, Westline works closely with customers, from conception to completion. Using quality materials, customers can choose from steel, oak, stainless steel and glass, to customise staircase treads, frames, balustrades/ balconies and associated products. Westline customer, Judith Donkin, from Rowlands Gill, purchased a StairLux staircase in June 2017. Speaking of her experience, Judith said: “Our previous staircase was made out of mahogany wood and it got to the stage where it was looking old and outdated, so we wanted to modernise it. “I had a picture in my mind as to how I wanted my new staircase to look, having been inspired by the glass staircases you see in retail shops. “I had heard of Westline previously as I used to work in Birtley where Westline are based, and so decided to take a visit to their showroom to see what they had to offer. They had on display a beautiful 48
glass and wooden staircase which was exactly what I had pictured in my head. “After visiting the showroom, one of Westline’s expert team, Paul, came to our home to measure out the space and discuss our specification. Originally I wanted glass panels with an oak step, but Paul recommended an all glass as he believed this would better suit the modern design I was after. As I hadn’t viewed an all glass staircase, I was invited to look at a previous project, but I had faith in Paul’s expertise and ordered the full glass. I’m glad I did as I absolutely love it! It’s exactly what I wanted. “I don’t know anyone else who has a staircase like mine and when friends and family come to visit they are all wowed. “I would definitely recommend Westline. They are a lovely family run business who were very professional and friendly throughout the whole process. Their customer service

ARCHIVES SEARCHING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP CONNECT FAMILIES
N
orthumberland Archives is looking for volunteers with a passion for history to digitally log records as part of a new initiative, Reading Room.
The project, in partnership with FamilySearch.org, aims to make browsing parish registers easier and more accessible for the public. Currently 60% of indexes have been processed for the County and Northumberland Archives are looking for volunteers, to complete the remaining 40%. Volunteers with a keen interest in family ancestry and historic records are being asked to select information from marriage, death and baptism registers online and input them into the digital system to enable the archives to be indexed. People can choose to undertake this work from the comfort of their own home. The role is extremely flexible meaning people can volunteer as little or as often as they want, ranging from ten minutes to a whole afternoon logging records. Councillor Cath Homer, Cabinet Member for culture, arts, leisure and tourism at Northumberland County Council, said: “Reading Room is a valuable and fascinating resource for many people to explore their
family history. Northumberland Archives is offering a great opportunity for people with an interest in local history to get involved. I would encourage anyone thinking about volunteering to take part. The process to apply is quick and easy and anyone interested should visit www.familysearch.org/indexing/projects to register. For more information about Northumberland Archives visit www.experiencewoodhorn.com/collections/ or contact archives@northumberland.gov.uk

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 52
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

NORTHUMBERLAND SHORTLISTED FOR IT'S LOVE PARKS CAMPAIGN An online campaign which helped to share Northumberland residents’ love for their local parks has been shortlisted for a national award.
N
orthumberland County Council ran the campaign last July, and it has now been highlighted as one of the best in the UK by national environmental campaign charity Keep Britain Tidy.
The Love Parks Award recognises an outstanding event or campaign that ran during Love Parks Week 2017. The initiative aims to ensure that residents and visitors use local parks and protect these important green spaces, and the award was open to entries from all local authorities in England and Wales. Northumberland County Council ran a social media campaign to highlight why residents and visitors ‘Love’ their local parks. Cllr Glen Sanderson cabinet member for environment and local services said: “We wanted to promote the parks and the activities and things that people can enjoy there to a wide audience across Northumberland and the wider region. We also wanted to support pride in the parks for those who work there and who visit and enjoy them. “Local services staff and parks team members encouraged residents and visitors of all ages to show why they love their local park - having their photo taken with the Love Parks heart, or making a video clip. It is a great credit to our parks staff and communications team that the campaign has been commended by the judges as worthy of shortlisting for a national award.” Photos and videos were posted on social media throughout the week, building a colourful campaign which demonstrated the fantastic features of the 12 parks across the county that are managed by Northumberland 54
County Council. The campaign was primarily run through Twitter and facebook, and the target audience was Northumberland residents and those who visit from the wider region. During the week the council also announced £2.3m National Lottery funding which will enable comprehensive improvement to one of its urban parks, in Ashington, and a video about the announcement was viewed 219 times. You can view a video about the Love Parks campaign by visiting the council website and clicking on the youtube link. The winner of the Love Parks Award will be announced at the annual national Keep Britain Tidy network conference in Brighton on in February.
Things that Northumberland residents and visitors said that they love about local parks include: • • • • • •
Meeting friends and family Dog walking Enjoying flowers, plants and green spaces Watching wildlife Enjoying water features such as lakes, streams and paddling pools Taking part in sports and leisure activities like bowls, football, cycling and play.
