JOIN THE

PRIDE Whatever your fitness goals in 2019, a brand new fitness studio in Bedlington can help you achieve them. Introducing Lionhart Fitness...

L

ionhart Fitness was created by its founder Ivan Hart and his business partner John Herron, who have known each other for around 25 years.

Ivan is a local lad from Bedlington and has been involved in fitness in one way or another through sport, at the age of 9 years, Ivan started Judo, where health and fitness was instilled in his mind from this early age. He competed in numerous national and international competitions. He began bodybuilding at the age of 15 and also competed in many competitions around the country. Ivan has always had a passion for his fitness and helping other people achieve their own fitness goals. Ivan is qualified at level 2 and 3 Personal training, whereby he has trained and coached many a client and assisted them attain their goals over the past 23 years. John saw Ivan’s passion and enthusiasm and the willingness to help others when he was trained by him at the same studio and decided to go into partnership and start Lionhart Fitness.

WHAT IS IN A NAME?

Lionhart is a play on words with Ivan’s surname being Hart, the lion has always been recognised as a symbol of courage, a strong and loyal animal to its “Pride”. It also suggests a person possesses exceptional courage and fortitude, being a very fearless person. Lions always work better as a “pride” The name also suggests that the person is brave. 6

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

The “pride” is meant to represent our Lionhart clients we want our clients to feel part of our family (Pride) to feel appreciated and important to us. The “DEN” as we hope the studio may be fondly referenced to “welcome to the lion’s den”.

WHY BEDLINGTON & VULCAN GARAGE

Lionhart Fitness decided upon the great location of the former Vulcan Garage in Bedlington (Sierra Hire) located on Schalksmuhle road, to become their home for a number of reasons. Ivan is from Bedlington and has a passion for the area, feeling it is sometimes neglected and sometimes like the poor cousin of surrounding towns in the area. Also, the size of the internal space was ideal for the type of training that is on offer to their valued clients, with ground space this size it was a fantastic opportunity to open their studio within its walls. Negotiations began with the owner of the property Ann Barnes; whose father actually built the garage in 1969. Ivan and John saw the potential and began the regeneration to such a prominent well-established building in Bedlington, with excellent parking facilities opposite.

STUDIO: Based in the former Vulcan Garage

WHAT YOU GET

When you join Lionhart fitness, you will notice its not a “gym”, it is a functional fitness studio. You will be joining a group of like-minded people who want to make a change in their lives. That may be weight loss, toning, fitness level’s, body confidence/strength and conditioning and much more. They have qualified nutritionists within their staff, who you can book in to have a consultation and discus your nutrition to assist you in your goal. They are there to help, every step of the way to encourage, advise and motivate you on all aspects of health and fitness. BUT and it’s a big BUT, you must put 100% effort and commitment into that goal to achieve it. We have all started a new diet, a new training regime but fell off the wagon for one reason or another, that’s okay, but get back on, speak to their dedicated trainers they are there to help you achieve your goal.

WHY OPEN ON THE 3RD SEPTEMBER?

Ivan pushed hard to open Lionhart Fitness for the start of September especially the 3rd September, because believe it or not it was on the 3rd September 1198 that Richard the Lionheart was crowned king of England. So a very poignant day to open!

WHY JOIN LIONHART FITNESS?

Why are they different? Their whole ethos is their passion and commitment to help you change. They are 100% customer focused and truly believe that when you enjoy your training then it will make you feel 100% and, by becoming part of our “Pride “you will immediately feel that you are valued and that you belong.

We know how hard it is to walk through the door of a new studio, you have all the doubts all the worries, what will people think? Will I be the only overweight person there? Will they look at me and judge? Well the short answer is NO!! The team don’t care how overweight or out of shape you may be, they don’t care what you look like. No matter what age, what fitness level, or just that fact you have not done any exercise for a long period, you are welcome and you will be surprised at the results you WILL achieve and have fun in the process. Lionhart Fitness have 3 excellent staff members Mark, Brogan and Lucy all of whom are dedicated, professional, knowledgeable and down to earth. Lionhart Fitness are striving to become “A lifestyle brand which helps, encourage and support each and every individual in their quest to become “fit for life”. HOW TO BOOST YOUR METABOLISM By Sarah Howe

Y

ou usually hear people blaming their weight gain on a slow metabolism.

They have cut down on calories and they are walking more or exercising more (more often than not its aerobic classes, “walking the dog” or running). So lets talk about what your metabolism actually is. It’s not an organ like your liver or kidneys. Your metabolism is necessary to maintain life. It is the organic & chemical process inside your organisms (or how quickly your body can burn calories & fat which allows you to stay alive). Your metabolism takes all the calories from the food and drink that you consume, mixes it with oxygen and releases energy into the body for your body to function i.e. breathing, repairing cells and digesting. Some people have a faster metabolism which means their body can burn energy from food at a faster rate. This also depends on body size, age and gender. Muscle cells require more energy to maintain than fat cells, therefore the more muscle you have the more calories your body burns. As you age and you lose muscle, your body replaces it with body fat which is why your metabolism slows down (unless you strength train and replace the muscle loss). Men tend to have more muscle than women which explains why men have a faster metabolism and can eat more calories than women. Here are 10 ways to boost your metabolism: 1. Eat plenty protein with each meal 2. Stand up more 3. Drinking green tea 4. Add spices to your food 5. Drink plenty cold water 6. Good nights sleep 7. Drink coffee 8. Replace your cooking fat with coconut oil 9. High intensity workout 10. Strength training

12

The last two are probably the most important. Doing a HITT workout will help burn more fat & therefore increasing your metabolic rate even after you workout. As mentioned earlier, muscle is more metabolically active so by strength training you will gain muscle mass, reduce body fat and increase your metabolism. Plus your body will burn more calories at rest. People who do diets and only do walking, running, aerobic classes, treadmills, bikes etc. will lose muscle mass therefore lowering metabolism. A lot of people who starve themselves on lower calories, under eat or do diets they are depriving their bodies. Take a look at this - on a daily basis this is how much of the energy/calories your body uses to function, Your brain 20%, your beating heart all the time accounts for 15-20%, the liver another 15-20% as well as kidneys, lungs and other tissues etc. The only other thing remaining is your muscle which is 25% of your resting metabolism. So stop cutting down on calories, do strength training (each new pound of muscle increases your metabolism) aerobic exercise can not offer this alone! At Curves we offer a safe environment for women of all ages, shapes & sizes to combine strength training & cardio in a HITT style. 30 minutes at Curves burns up to 500 calories compared to 30 minutes on a treadmill burns 216 calories approx or 30 minutes on a rowing machine 189 calories approx. Just imagine only having to do 30 minutes at Curves and be able to eat properly and not have to deprive yourself battling against your weight? MAJOR INVESTMENT IN NORTHUMBERLAND'S GREEN SPACES AROUND £300,000 IS TO BE INVESTED IN IMPROVING FIVE OF THE COUNTY’S PARKS

T

he Council’s Cabinet has agreed spending of over £200,000 towards the total of £287,000 on improvement projects at parks in Blyth, Cramlington, Bedlington and Rothbury over the coming year.

In Ridley Park, Blyth, which has a famous water play area, the feature is going to be totally refurbished at a cost of £25,000. In addition, several pieces of play equipment which are no longer fit for purpose will be removed and replaced. Also in Blyth, the popular Mermaid Play Area is to get an investment of around £50,000 to replace much of the play equipment which has now reached the end of its serviceable life. At Alexandra Park in Cramlington the Council is contributing £15,000 towards a £50,000 scheme which will see a community garden installed on the site of the former putting green. The works will see new paths, seating, fencing, picnic tables and planting, and a half pit wheel has already been installed as a central focal feature. In Bedlington, Gallagher Park, which has seen significant improvements in recent years, will benefit from a new play area to replace the current one which isn’t considered fit for purpose. The Council is providing £56,000 towards the scheme, with the local ward member and Friends of Gallagher Park contributing a further £10,000. Finally, in Rothbury, the county council has teamed up with the parish council to invest a total of £76,000 in the Riverside Play Area for a complete refurbishment and replacement of play equipment in this popular riverside site, with the parish council then taking on full responsibility for the maintenance of this area in future. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “This investment in our green spaces will benefit a lot of people - not just residents but the thousands of visitors who come to our parks and green spaces each year. Our parks are focal points for local communities of all ages and we’ve worked closely with parish councils and ward members on a number of these schemes to ensure they’ll have first class facilities for generations to come.” 14

WAS YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO EXERCISE MORE? BUILDING UP SLOWLY AND CONSISTENTLY IS KEY ACCORDING TO MSK HEALTHCARE & PERFORMANCE CLINIC, BASED IN GUIDEPOST

N

ew Year’s resolution - exercise more, get fit, lose weight, sign up for classes go for it, ouch old knee pain come’s back, nagging bad back returns, achilles tendon is sore again. Does this sound familiar?

Remember, exercise increases stress on our joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and tissues which is good if done progressively. However, often we see patients who are relativity sedative to suddenly doing 50-star jumps, 100 burpees, countless lunges and 20 shuttle runs 5 nights a week. Then they get injured unable to exercises for weeks, motivation drops off and the momentum to exercise is lost. Our bodies deal with load differently with age, between the ages of 30 and 50 years old muscle strength and muscle mass is constant for the majority, of us. From 50 years old muscle strength decreases 12-15% each decade and muscle mass reduces 30-40% during these years. We often hear from patients is “once I hit 40 years old, I started to get injured” one of the reasons is the reduction of type II fibres in our tissues with aging. These fibres have the greatest capacity to absorb load that tissue are put under during exercise. So, our tissues ability to cope with exercise “load” reduces with age especially if the loads are too high, too often and too sudden. If we slowly and progressively increase the loads over time the body adapts and handles exercise loads far 16

better, significantly reducing risk of injury. It’s far better to build up your exercise duration and intensity gradually over weeks and months especially if you’re just getting back into exercising. Also decide on what you want from exercising, getting older then lifting weights with good technique is beneficial to stop muscle wasting. Want to lose body fat then doing high intensity exercise (HITT) is best especially around the stomach.

If we slowly and progressively increase the loads over time the body adapts and handles exercise loads far better, significantly reducing risk of injury.

Have adequate rest and don’t beat yourself up too much if the person next to you is doing twice as much but is half your age. It’s better to be consistent in exercising then dropping in and out due to injuries. If you need any advice on injuries drop us an email or read our website research blog for more information on various topics surrounding exercise. GARDENING TRENDS Mark and Stew from Plantsplus Garden Centre share their gardening trends for 2019

W

hilst the weather doesn’t make for a great time spent in the garden you can still keep gardening on your mind by preparing for the year ahead. We’re looking at 2019’s trends so that you’re raring to go in March when the ground begins to warm up again.

20

THE ‘COTTAGE GARDEN’

Don’t think that you need an actual cottage or a country garden to match with this trend showing strongest in smaller garden areas such as patios, balconies and porches. Apparent last year at Plantsplus Garden Centre and continuing to be popular due to their simplicity in care are traditional Perennials and Herbaceous (no woody stems above the ground). Their variety in shape, colour and texture can help to bring the feeling of the countryside into urban environments without growing too large or having to maintain over winter.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

If your current planters are needing a new lease of colour you can fill in some bare spaces with a little compost and plant up some of our winter bedding packs.

GROW YOUR OWN

You can’t ignore that we’re all becoming a little more eco-conscious and aware of where our food is from which makes this trend unsurprising. The everpopular tomato will never go out of fashion but try a dwarf variety this year to pop into a window planter to save space – lettuce, spring onions and chillies are also great for this, whether indoors or outdoors. There has been resurgence in vegetables that need an extra bit of attention to grow and have become a hit with modern outdoor hobbyists. Homegrown artichokes and asparagus can be tricky in containers but can provide a great sense of achievement once ready to harvest, especially when you don’t have a plot to plant vegetables straight into the ground.

CONTAINER PLANTING

Every year we plant up thousands of hanging pots and patio planters with bright, bold colours that should last you through the winter and summer seasons. We put a lot of thought into their arrangement and ease of care so that you can spend your time enjoying them, rather than tending to them. If your current planters are needing a new lease of colour you can fill in some bare spaces with a little compost and plant up some of our winter bedding packs before you invest in your summer arrangement. If you’re still a little pushed for space outside your home or flat, living walls can make a decorative alternative to planters. Affix them to any wall or fence (inside or outside) and fill with herbs, nasturtiums, grasses or bedding plants. Living walls can hide a multitude of sins, be changed frequently with the seasons and are easy to move. You can find some more inspiration by visiting our own living walls planted on the front of our garden centre and a demonstration video inside our foyer.

NEW YEAR IN FULL SWING FOR CHOIR

N

ew Year Celebrations are now forgotten but the early months of 2019 have been very busy for the gentlemen in Ashington & District Male Voice Choir.

A full calendar of concerts leads upto the choir’s Annual Concert in May so rehearsals are busy with the introduction of new items and the re-introduction of some popular ‘long rested pieces’ to bring a variation to the repertoire. It has also been encouraging to welcome a couple of new faces into the membership and hopefully more will follow, after all the choir’s reputation and name continually grow and are reaching new areas all the time. The members are appreciating the work of the musical director, Neil Morton who returned to this role early last year and also the continued support of the brilliant accompanist, Derek Brett. The choir is lucky to have such talent and their efforts have certainly been reflected in the response to the performances of recent months. The support given to many charitable and voluntary organisations through its concerts gives the choir great satisfaction. As a community choir, consideration is given to a variety of requests to put on a concert and where there is agreement, the choir only looks to recover 22 22

expenses which leaves plenty of opportunity for funds to be raised for whatever purpose the organisation needs. It’s recognised that ‘singing is good for your health’. The choir members not only benefit from the exercise in singing but also from the social involvement with a group with a common interest. A number of new members have been welcomed in recent months and all soon became ‘established in our community’. Further new members are always welcome and there are no auditions or a requirement to be able to read music, just a wish to give it a try. Interested…then just go along to Stakeford & Bomarsund Welfare on a Thursday at 7-00pm, you’ll be very welcome. You can visit www. ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org or the Facebook Page to see more about Ashington & District Male Voice Choir.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 28 28

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS WITH YOUR DENTURE? Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice would like to introduce Andy Graham, their Clinical Dental Technician.

S

ome of you may already be wondering why Alan Forrest’s name has not been mentioned here? Well, Alan retired at the end of 2018 and his very large boots have been more than adequately filled by Andy Graham, who will be continuing the fantastic service that was provided by Alan. Alan will be missed by both staff and patients and the practice wish him the very best for a wonderful retirement. If you are having problems with your denture it is best to visit your dentist or clinical dental technician who will be able to check your mouth is clean and healthy and ensure your denture fits properly. Sometimes dentures need to be adjusted or replaced. There are some common problems that dentures cause and can include: Problems speaking and eating Mouth ulcers and sores Infection (thrush) caused by poor fitting dentures and poor denture cleanliness Embarrassment from dentures moving in your mouth

• • • •

At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are very fortunate to offer a denture service provided by Andy Graham, a Clinical Dental Technician. A clinical dental technician is a dental technician who has extended their training to gain an additional qualification which allows them to be part of a dental team as a clinician, working directly with the patient to provide and make dentures.

So, what is the advantage if Andy, a clinical dental technician, made a denture for you? Andy would be involved in every stage of making a denture for you; he would do the clinical part in the surgery that your dentist would normally do, however he would also make the denture for you too! Before Andy

provides a denture, he would assess your facial features and how you smile and talk. He would discuss your needs and requirements and keep you informed throughout all the stages of making your denture. Andy would be able to fulfil your wishes by providing you with a functional, naturally looking bespoke denture tailored to your needs.

Here are some of the examples of the services Andy can offer:

COMPLETE UPPER AND LOWER DENTURES

If you have no teeth remaining in the upper and/or lower jaw Andy can give you back your confidence with complete dentures: Improving the clarity of your speech Helping you to feel more secure about eating the foods you want Supporting sagging facial muscles and sunken features that can make you appear older (especially around your mouth, lips and cheeks) Removing the need for denture fixative

• • • •

PARTIAL DENTURES

If one or several of your teeth are missing, Andy can restore your smile with a Partial Denture. By replacing your missing teeth, he can give you back the look and function of a full set of healthy, natural teeth. (If you have any of your own natural teeth you must first be examined by a dentist to ensure these are healthy. They can arrange this for you if you do not have your own dentist). So, if you are having problems with your denture or would like a new one, with many years of experience and skill, why not choose Andy? CONSCIOUS SEDATION AT THE DENTIST Are you too scared to go to the dentist? Or a nervous wreck when you have to go? Do you hate the sound, sight and smell of going to the dentist? Well, you are certainly not alone!

F

rom an adult dental survey1 just over a third of adults whom have ever been to the dentist have moderate anxiety, and a further 12% have an extreme dental anxiety.

This survey did not even include those of you that have never been to the dentist! It is not a surprise that being scared of the dentist is a huge barrier for some of you seeking dental care. However, not going to the dentist can have a huge impact on your oral health. Dental anxiety has been linked to feelings of low self esteem and found to have an effect on performance at work. It can also affect existing relationships as well as meeting new people2.

DO YOU WANT TO RECEIVE DENTAL CARE BUT FEEL TOO SCARED?

We can help you. At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice, our experienced team are used to helping frightened patients embark on their dental journey. You should never feel embarrassed about your dental fear or the state of your teeth: we absolutely understand and will never judge anyone who has the courage to reach out for dental help. We have learned to listen to our nervous patients and understand their concerns. We take it slowly until you are ready to accept dental treatment.

"But I'm too scared and just want to be knocked out."

You will not be fully knocked out or put to sleep, (a general anaesthetic) in a dental practice, however conscious sedation is a good alternative. The sedation team at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice is lead by Joanne Duggan, the principal dentist, and Katie Lawrence whom both have an additional qualification, a postgraduate diploma in conscious sedation in dentistry from Newcastle University. Joanne and Katie are supported by dental nurses Ally, Lisa and Naomi REFERENCES 1. Adult Dental Health Survey 2009. The Health and Social Care Information Centre, 2011 2. Cohen SM et al. 32

whom have all passed the national examination in nursing in conscious sedation. There are two types of conscious sedation offered at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice; inhalational or intravenous sedation. Inhalational sedation involves breathing oxygen and nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas or happy air) through a small mask just on your nose. You breathe the happy air in and out through your nose and it makes you feel more relaxed, calm and able to cope with the dental treatment. At the end of treatment you simply breathe the happy air out and you feel fully recovered after about 10 minutes. Intravenous sedation involves an injection either in the back of your hand or arm with a drug called midazolam. Generally midazolam creates a slightly greater level of sedation than nitrous oxide. It may also make you forget what has happened during the first part of your sedation appointment. The drug is in your system much longer than with happy air and therefore you need someone to look after you, and are not allowed to drive or go to work until the affects have worn off after 24 hours. If you are scared of the dentist but know you need some dental help, then go on. You can do it. Pick up the phone! Contact us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402 to arrange a chat. The longer you delay, the harder it becomes. www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk

WOULD YOU LIKE STRAIGHTER TEETH?

D

id you once spend years undergoing orthodontic treatment and unsightly braces only to see your teeth slowly slip back to their former wonky ways? Are you one of many who are generally unhappy with the alignment of your teeth and longing for a beautiful, straight smile?

At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are able to offer Invisalign GO®. This is a cosmetic brace system and is designed to straighten teeth that are mildly to moderately crooked. To correct more severely malaligned teeth, ideally you should see a specialist orthodontist.

INVISALIGN GO

®

Invisalign GO® can give you the beautiful straight teeth you have always wanted through a minimally invasive approach. The system allows your dentist to treat mild to moderate misalignment cases. It is fast replacing traditional metal train tracks (fixed braces) as the subtler way to improve the appearance of your teeth. Invisalign GO® works through a series of almost invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners so no one can really tell you're wearing them. They offer an aesthetic alternative to conventional braces and allow

34 34

for normal brushing and oral hygiene tasks that are generally impaired by metal wires. Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean therefore reducing your risk of gum disease.

THE INVISALIGN GO®PROCESS

• •

• • • • •

Invisalign® uses advanced 3-D computer-imaging technology to plan the movement of your teeth At the initial consultation your teeth and jaws are examined and photos (and possibly X-rays) are taken to establish whether you are eligible for Invisalign GO® treatment. This appointment gives you the opportunity to ask a lot of questions Once suitability for treatment is established, dental impressions are taken of your teeth and sent to Invisalign® for them to create a 3-D digital model of your teeth and plan your treatment using ClinCheck® software. Your virtual treatment plan is then sent back to your dentist so they can ensure you are happy with the end result and see how your teeth are going to move from start to finish. You are able to comment on your finished result, making fine adjustments if required When you are happy, and only when you are happy, the final invisible braces are made for you Your treatment is often a combined approach of aligning, bleaching and placing composite white fillings on your front teeth to achieve the final smile. We call this the A-B-C process (Align-BrightenComposites). We will always work together with you to set manageable goals.

If you’re interested in Invisalign GO®, call us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402.

RECIPE

TIP

HAND HELD LAMB & CHORIZO PIES

This recipe works well with beef mince too.

Prep Time 35 Mins

These mouth-watering hand held pies, inspired by Scotch eggs, are a portable lunch option that can be served hot or cold. Lean lamb mince is combined with chorizo sausage, spring onions, herbs and quail eggs and are encased in shortcrust pastry and served with a home made spiced tomato

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

✽ 375g/12oz lean lamb mince ✽ 2 spring onions, finely chopped ✽ 50g/2oz chorizo sausage, finely chopped ✽ 30ml/2tbsp freshly chopped flatleaf parsley ✽ Salt and freshly milled black pepper ✽ 2 x 320g packs shortcrust pastry ✽ 12 quail’s eggs, hard-boiled ✽ Beaten egg, to glaze

• •

FOR THE SPICED TOMATO RELISH

✽ 15ml/1tbsp rapeseed or olive oil ✽ 1 small red onion, peeled and finely chopped ✽ 1 x 200g can chopped tomatoes ✽ 5ml/1tsp caster sugar ✽ Pinch dried chilli flakes ✽ 15ml/1tbsp good balsamic vinegar 36 36

• • • • •

Cook Time 25 Minutes Serves 6 People

To make the filling, in a large bowl mix together the mince, spring onions, chorizo and parsley. Season. On a lightly floured surface roll the pastry to a thickness of a one pound coin and cut out twelve 9cm/3½in circles to fit a 12-hole greased muffin tin. Cut twelve 7cm/2¾in circles for the lid. Gently press the large pastry circles into the holes of the muffin tins and half fill with a portion of the mince mixture. Top with a quail egg then a final layer of the mince mixture to cover. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 6, 200°C/400°F. Brush the edges with the beaten egg, then place the lid on top, pressing the edges together to seal. Brush the tops with the remaining egg and make a hole in the centre for any steam to escape. Bake the pies for 25 minutes, then leave to cool in the tin. Meanwhile, prepare the relish; heat the oil in a non-stick pan. Cook the onions for 2-3 minutes, or until soft. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. Serve the pies with the relish (both the pies and the relish taste great hot or cold).

C

Catch has a fantastic wine list with some great house wines along with some more refined bottles. Each week there are cellar selections and cocktails to compliment the chefs specials. The restaurant area features an open kitchen where you can watch the team of chefs hard at work creating unique and delicious seafood dishes. T

he Secretary of State for Transport has seen firsthand plans for a new passenger line connecting Northumberland with Newcastle. Transport Minister Chris Grayling spent more than an hour on a specially chartered train from Morpeth to find out more about the ambitious scheme to bring back rail passenger services throughout south east Northumberland. Senior councillors took the opportunity to press the case for the reintroduction of the Northumberland Line as the Minister was transported to Bedlington and Newsham - which would be key stations on the future line. Earlier this week the council announced proposals for a further £3.5m investment to develop the plans to reintroduce direct trains between south-east Northumberland and Newcastle Central - with thousands of residents a day being transported along the 20-mile route between Ashington and Newcastle city centre. Studies show that reintroducing passenger services to the current freight line could boost the local economy by up to £70m with more than 800,000 annual return journeys by 2038. Commuters and shoppers could speed between Ashington and the heart of Newcastle in as little as 35 minutes, with several new or rebuilt stations along the route linking towns to key areas of employment, training and leisure attractions as well as providing transport links across the wider region and the UK. Council leader Peter Jackson said: "It was excellent be able to show the Transport Minister exactly what we’re trying to achieve and continue to press for Government support. “The Government has classed this scheme as being of regional importance in their own Transport for the North proposals and Mr Grayling certainly understood our vision and found it a very informative trip. Mike Paterson, Regional Director, Northern, said: “We wholeheartedly support plans to improve the rail network into Northumberland. As the North’s regional and local railway company, we see great benefits to local communities by investing in this expansion of the railway in this way.” The council aims to submit an outline business case and proposal for detail design for the Northumberland Line by the end of the year, with passenger services planned for 2022.

£19M BOOST FOR COUNTY'S ROADS & PATHS

I

mprovements to roads, bridges and footpaths across Northumberland are the cornerstones of the coming year’s ambitious Local Transport Plan (LTP).

A total of £18.6m is set to be invested in a raft of repair, restoration and maintenance projects benefiting pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in all parts of the county. Headline schemes include introducing 20mph limits outside many schools, streetscape and parking improvements in Blyth town centre, a safe crossing for children at Riding Mill, a new roundabout at Manor Walks in Cramlington and new safety measures at up to 18 locations which are accident hotspots. A number of key bridges are set to be improved, such as Berwick Old Bridge and Ford Bridge in the north of the county and refurbishment of the Klondyke underbridge at Cramlington. A further £490,000 is earmarked for improving public rights of way county-wide, which will

include the resurfacing of the popular Eve Black cycleway and footpath that runs through the dunes between Seaton Sluice and Blyth. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “We’re delighted to be able to put forward such an ambitious and wide range of improvement projects for the coming year. The projects range from creating new bus stops to walking and cycling schemes along with major junction and safety schemes. From Riding Mill to Blyth, and Cornhill to Cramlington, these schemes are designed to improve not just our roads network but also the safety for our residents right across the County. To see the full list of planned projects across the county visit www.northumberland.gov.uk.

NORTH SHIELDS ARTIST TO HEADLINE MOUTH OF THE TYNE FESTIVAL

T

he 15th annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place this summer, with shows from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th July in the surroundings of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and this year features a local North Shields artist as one of the head acts!

North Shields born artist Sam Fender is headlining the main stage on Thursday night. The Brits Award Critics Choice 2019 winner will bring his alternative rock style to Tynemouth to kick off what is likely to be a big summer for the up and coming performer. Friday sees solo acoustic star Jack Savoretti headlining the main stage. The London based artist has 6 studio albums behind him and brings a set list packed with hits. The headline act on Saturday is an 80's legend - Rick Astley! The 'Never Gonna Give You Up' hitmaker has sold over 40 million records worldwide and will be playing a mix of old classics as well as songs from his recently released album 'Beautiful Life'. The Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place in Tynemouth and is a four day cultural celebration of live music, dance and arts by the sea, attracting around 100,000 people. Live music concerts take place in the grounds of English Heritage property Tynemouth Priory and Castle. Local street food pop-ups trade under festoon lighting whilst festival go-ers gather around shipping bobbins and on reclaimed driftwood seats. There’s a jazz stage outside the Priory next to a welcoming pub overlooking the sea. A free programme of 46

international street theatre provides the entertainment. Hundreds of local children learn new music skills in the weeks leading up to the event and participate in a colourful parade to kick things off. Surf lessons take place a stone’s throw away and cruise ships enter the River Tyne just beyond the headland. There’s an innovative programme of dance and one-off attractions on the platforms of Grade II listed Tynemouth Station, as well as evening concerts at the Playhouse Whitley Bay and Tynemouth’s Surf Café. The festival will also feature a free programme of events including international street entertainment, live jazz music and a children’s pageant. This event does not have camping but there are a number of hotels, hostels and guest houses in the area. PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR NEW MORPETH LEISURE CENTRE

M

orpeth is set for up to £18m investment in a new leisure centre. The money earmarked in the council’s forthcoming budget has been welcomed by local councillors and the Morpeth Forum which has been hosting drop-in sessions with the community for the last two years through its Morpeth Masterplan work. Councillor Cath Homer, Cabinet Member for Culture, Arts, Leisure and Tourism, said, “Morpeth leisure centre has been pretty much untouched for 20 years or more. Its condition is a disappointment for many people looking to swim, exercise and keep fit. The County Council is convinced that by investing in a new centre they can provide modern and attractive all weather facilities, drive up membership and significantly increase health and well-being in the community." The local County Councillor for Morpeth North Ward David Bawn added: “The planned investment

in what will be a new leisure centre is very welcome news. The existing facility is looking very outdated. With our population in Morpeth set to rocket we need to make sure sports facilities match the expectations of residents.” Speaking on behalf of the Morpeth Forum, Cllr Nic Best said: “The issue of leisure facilities in Morpeth has been a common point of concern for residents in the drop-in sessions held by the Morpeth Forum. The County Council budget needs to be confirmed by a vote in late February shortly after which the next dropin session will be held outlining details of the scheme and the timeline for construction.”
