BAMBURGH CASTLE RAISES GLASS TO 125TH ANNIVERSARY

O

ne of Britain’s most iconic castles is toasting a special birthday in style with the launch of two anniversary beers dedicated to the remarkable Victorian philanthropist who helped save it from ruin. The special brews are dedicated to North East hero Lord Armstrong, who 125 years ago put both his fortune and foresight to good use when he bought Bamburgh Castle in north Northumberland, transforming it from a run-down shell into the breath-taking and beautifully restored stronghold it is today. Lord Armstrong Amber and Bebbanburg Gold are a collaboration between Alnwick Brewery and the descendants of the 19thcentury Tyneside-born industrialist, scientist, inventor and benefactor, who bought the crumbling fortification in 1894 for the princely sum of £60,000 (£7.6m in today’s money). It is hoped locals and visitors alike will get a taste for the bottled beers, and join in a summer of anniversary celebrations by raising a glass to the man whose generosity saved for the nation the one-time royal capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria. William Watson-Armstrong – the fifth generation of the family to own Bamburgh Castle – says the beers were an opportunity to do something different to mark what is a milestone year. “The two beers are a very special and unique way for people to toast the important part the first Lord Armstrong played in the history, both past and present, of a place that regularly tops the polls as one of the UK’s most recognisable and best-loved castles,” he explains. “Lord Armstrong started out his working life as a lawyer before going on to become one of the Victorian age’s greatest entrepreneurs, whose firms employed 35,000 people across Tyneside. He built up a vast fortune, but was renowned for his acts of generosity. “But for his intervention, Bamburgh Castle may well have been a lost cause. Instead, Lord Armstrong’s legacy has been to leave us a spectacular and powerful reminder of the important part this corner of Britain

10

played in the nation’s history over many centuries. Given that Lord Armstrong was a man of the people who came from humble beginnings, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate his 125-year association with Bamburgh than by raising a glass or two of beer brewed in his name. I am sure he would think it a fitting tribute.” William worked closely with Alnwick Brewery’s head brewer Phil Bell to develop the two beverages with their striking labels. Lord Armstrong Amber depicts a painting of the man himself set against an arresting blue background. The Bebbanburg Gold uses the classic image of Bamburgh Castle perched atop its rocky outcrop overlooking a wide expanse of dune-fringed sands, with the scene dramatically overlaid in attention-grabbing pink. The beer itself (Bebbanburg was Bamburgh’s Saxon name) is made with First Gold hops, giving a refreshing flavour and aroma, and full-bodied Maris Otter Malt with its hint of honey in the finish. It has an ABV of 4.2%. Meanwhile, Lord Armstrong Amber (3.8% ABV) is a dry hoppy beer, with a refreshing citrus aftertaste. Both beers are being sold in the Bamburgh Castle gift shop at £2.95 a bottle, and are also available in the Clock Tower Café and for weddings and private functions. It is hoped local pubs will also stock them. Jannick Genouw, Alnwick Brewery’s sales executive, says it has been a privilege to work on the beers. The launch of the beers is just one of many Lord Armstrong focussed 125th anniversary events planned for the coming months. They include the chance to meet the first Lord Armstrong in person as he wanders around the castle talking about his restoration plans; special Lego workshops offering children the chance to create and build their own engineering-inspired inventions; and informative talks. These will run alongside a host of summer holiday activities including medieval archery, live music, pony cart rides, foraging, film screenings under the stars, and woodcraft workshops.

NEW CINEMA AND RETAIL COMPLEX FOR ASHINGTON TOWN CENTRE

P

lans for the redevelopment of Portland Park Ashington have taken a major step forward, with Advance Northumberland signing a deal with national cinema operator Reel Cinema for a new multi-screen cinema and restaurant complex.

Working on behalf of Northumberland County Council, Advance Northumberland has secured a significant commitment from Reel who are delighted to be part of an exciting cinema led development that will transform Ashington town centre. In April Northumberland County Council’s Cabinet approved a £4.6m loan and a £3m grant to create a cinema, restaurants and bring new shops into Portland Park. This funding, including a capital contribution of £1m by Advance Northumberland, will be used to develop a 17,000 square foot, seven screen cinema and restaurant space to complement the existing leisure facilities. Terms are also being finalised with a major retailer to deliver a 20,000 square foot retail store with over 100 car parking spaces. A range of smaller shops will also be developed by Advance Northumberland to encourage both national and local traders and provide a gateway into the more established retail offer on Station Road. Advance Northumberland has been working closely with the Ashington Project Co-ordination Group, the town forum comprising Town and County Councillors on this major development. Reel Cinemas is a nationwide cinema operator with 14 14

cinemas across the UK and remains a true local, family owned, independent cinema operator. Reel Cinemas is proud to be one of the largest independent cinema exhibitors in the UK, and have exciting plans to grow organically over the next five years, with at least 10 new cinemas opening in selected locations nationwide, including the new cinema in Ashington. A pre planning submission public consultation will take place on Wednesday 17th July from 11am-6pm at Ashington Leisure Centre. The planning application is targeted to be submitted late summer 2019. The consultation material will be made available on-line, with the public also having the opportunity to provide comment electronically should they not be available to attend the sessions. Ken Dunbar, Managing Director of Advance Northumberland, said: “It’s immensely satisfying for everyone in Advance Northumberland who are involved in bringing this fantastic new mixed development and cinema attraction to Ashington, thereby building on the huge success of Ashington Leisure Centre and supporting the ongoing regeneration of the town centre. “Ashington is a great town and a great place to invest. It has significant potential and we are delighted to be delivering the further development of Portland Park. We have signed the deal on a seven screen major cinema development – one that would draw people from across the county. And with a cinema you also attract and support a wide range of leisure offers that will really complement the highly successful leisure centre”.

BLOW YOUR OWN HORN! DO YOU FANCY HAVING A GO AT PLAYING A BRASS INSTRUMENT? BEDLINGTON COMMUNITY BRASS BAND WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Bedlington Community Brass Band at the Ashington Miners’ Picnic, June 2019

B

rass bands have been, and remain a huge part of community life in our area, from the time when the landscape was dotted with coal mines. You can follow the history at Woodhorn Museum, with its amazing display of miners’ banners, and Durham Miners’ Gala fills the streets of the city each year with brilliant bands; but Bedlington hasn’t had its own band for many years … that is until five years ago. Music Partnership North (MPN), the music development organisation for young people in our region, gained funding from Youth Music to start a big brass playing project in Bedlington’s schools. Whole classes were able to try out and learn brass instruments, with schools forming ‘minibands’ and special projects to bring the players together each year at the Miners’ Picnic in Ashington. Brilliant! But what happens when the children get really hooked? What

18

Band members include children, parents who’ve been inspired by their children, people who used to play long ago and even players who are new to music.

happens when they want more, but they’re not good enough to join one of the local competition bands? That’s where, for us adults, the genius of the project kicks in. A key part of it was to begin a Community Brass Band in Bedlington, and five years ago Bedlington Community Brass Band was formed. It’s a Brass Band, but not as we used to know them, because absolutely anyone can join. And they do. Chris has played brass instruments all his life, but his wife hadn’t – he dragged her along three days after she’d first blown into a trombone to see what would happen – she was made welcome and is still blowing! Band members include children who’ve been part of the Schools’ Brass Project, parents who’ve been inspired by their children, people who used to play long, long ago and fancied picking it up again and players new to brass and even new to music. Members comment that

LOCAL FEATURE NAME THAT TUNE! At the Ashington Miners’ Picnic, June 2018

one of the best things about the band is the friendliness, the people, and the fact that all generations come together in it. Sometimes the grown-ups wish the young ones were a bit less chatty, and sometimes the young ones wish break times at band practice were longer, but everyone agrees that getting along together and making music together is fantastic. With professional support from our tutors and lots of help and encouragement from band members old and young, new members are really made welcome and have fun. The great thing about a band is that if you make a mistake, no one minds, and there are usually plenty of other players to cover it up! So far it’s been an exciting ride. We’ve made friends with other bands and performed with them in churches and community venues; we’ve helped out at fundraisers and community events. A big highlight has been playing each year at the Miners’ Picnic alongside competition bands and the minibands, in sunshine and in rain (remember those ponchos, everyone?). We’ve played music specially written for us. We’ve played with international star brass ensembles and we’ve even played Hall One at the Sage. We play all kinds of music from traditional hymns and marches to pop music and movie tunes, and all the band members have noticed how much we’ve improved over the years – but we still welcome all newcomers, whatever their playing level! From the beginning, the band has been funded through amazing support from MPN, who have raised funds from Youth Music. But we always knew this could not go on for ever. So band members formed a Trust to look after the community band part of the project and to give us the chance to build a band for the long-term future. We still have very close links with MPN; our conductor

and tutor are MPN people and MPN sends members from minibands and the ‘trainer band’ to us when they are ready; but we have also been able to secure support from local businesses and West Bedlington Town Council to help with band expenses: room hire, tutors, music, instruments, insurance and our (‘very cool’, according to band members) uniforms. Without that kind of support, we couldn’t survive and we couldn’t remain open to all. For the future, our band wants to play the best part we can in our local community. We love to be involved in local events and with local life; we’ve recently been invited into a care home and we are excited to see what memories and enjoyment we will spark with the residents. Music is woven into our lives in so many ways, and the more we do, the more fun life is! So, for our future, we need two things: we need supporters who can help fund the band or join our lovely committee who do the behind the scenes work to run the band; and we need players. We are really keen to grow the band and to welcome anyone who used to play or who fancies having a go. We can provide instruments and help with learning, and the band subs are low because we want to be accessible to all. We rehearse on Tuesdays in termtime (but not every single week – check our facebook page for details) from 7-8.30 at Bedlington Community Centre. If you think that might be you, find us on facebook (Bedlington Brass Family) and leave a message, or come along and see us - and give us a try. We need you!

PLAYERS WANTED! Fancy giving it a go? If you’ve previously played an instrument or want to give it a try, visit Bedlington Brass on Facebook for more information. Rehearsals are Tuesdays 7pm 8.30pm at Bedlington Community Centre in Term Time but check Facebook for details.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 26 26

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. DRESS YOUR AREA TO IMPRESS FOR THE TOUR OF BRITAIN

T

he Tour of Britain organisers are urging community groups, schools, businesses and land owners to show their support for the race by creating bigger than life works of art in open spaces across the North of Tyne area.

Following the success of the inaugural contest, the Tour of Britain National Land Art Competition will return for the 2019 race, which takes place across North of Tyne as stage three on Monday 9 September. Anyone can also get involved by dressing their streets and shop windows with colourful bunting, flags, floral or cycling displays. The 114-mile stage starts in Berwick, passing through Northumberland and onto the North Tyneside coast, and into Wallsend, before continuing to Newcastle city centre, with a spectacular finish on Grey Street. In 2017 the Tour of Britain swept

through Northumberland creating a wave of excitement as some of the world’s top cyclists cycled through our communities. Residents and businesses colourfully dressed the route with bikes and bunting, and thousands of spectators lined the route to cheer on the riders and give them a fantastic welcome. Organisers hope that scores of local communities across the North of Tyne area will be just as involved this year. The tour passes right through Morpeth, Bedlington and Cramlington, as well as a host of local villages. As well as the chance to be crowned winner of the national competition, those that take part could be featured on TV, with the race itself aired to 166 countries worldwide. Peter Jackson, Leader of Northumberland County Council added: “We want everyone to have a fantastic time when the Tour of Britain arrives on our patch, and make it really memorable. Communities completely got behind the Tour in 2017 and did Northumberland proud by decking the route in the famous red and yellow colours. So let’s make it bigger and better for 2019, and show the world what makes us special.” North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll said: “We’ve seen from other events like the Tour de France and Yorkshire what a spectacle these races can be when communities get involved, and we want to create that same kind of buzz in our region. The Tour of Britain will be broadcast nationally and internationally

Here are some ideas to show your creative side:

• • • •

Hang bunting or get together with others along your street Decorate bikes in all sorts of colours and decoration Create bike related floral displays along the route Dressed businesses will become easily recognisable as cycle friendly businesses so dress your windows and frontages Or come up with an ingenious idea to make your business stand out amongst the crowds

– this is great chance for the world to see what a beautiful area we live in.” ITV4 plan to screen live free-to-air coverage of each stage, along with a nightly highlights programme of the best of the action, which will be available to 166 countries around the world. The eight-stage race runs from 7 to 14 September – full route details can be found at: www.northoftyne-tob.co.uk

If you have a great idea for a piece of artwork that would really showcase pride in your area and support for the Tour of Britain as it comes your area, register your interest before 21 August 2019 at: www.northoftyne-tob.co.uk/copy-of-schools-information 28

MISSING TEETH? JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, DISCUSSES THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO REPLACE A MISSING TOOTH OR TEETH

I

f you have a gap or spaces due to a missing tooth or teeth then there may or may not be a need to fill it. The need to fill a gap really depends on where it is and how it affects you, your oral health and also your general health and well-being.

Some people have a missing front tooth and the appearance does not concern them at all, however other people (me for instance) would not want to be without a front tooth. The options that are available generally fall into 4 main categories as described below, however every person needs to be specifically assessed by their dentist as every case is different and there will be circumstances where some options are suitable while others are not.

DO NOTHING

Sometimes the simplest and cheapest option is to do nothing. This can also be the best, but depends very much on where the gaps are. Loosing teeth can have a huge impact on people ranging from a negative psychological impact and lack of confidence socially due to missing front teeth, to not being able to chew food properly. The loss of a lot of teeth may also make your mouth and lips look sunken in. But if, for example, you have a space from a single tooth at the back of your mouth then you may not even notice too much of a

change in your appearance or function or health of your mouth and therefore you may think replacing it is not worth the time and cost of dental treatment.

DENTURES

Dentures can replace spaces from just one lost tooth (a partial denture) or the loss of all teeth, (a full denture). Unless retained by implants they are removable, which means you can take them in and out of your mouth yourself. It is important to be able to take dentures out to clean them but also to enable you to properly clean any natural teeth. Dentures involve false teeth being placed into a base material that is usually made from either a hard pink acrylic plastic, Valplast (a "flexible" nylon resin), or cobalt chromium metal. Each of these materials has their advantages and disadvantages, some of which are discussed below: Acrylic: This is a hard pink plastic material and tends to be the cheapest base material used. It can be used to make a range of dentures from replacing just 1 tooth, (a partial denture) to all your teeth, (a full denture). The pink acrylic rests on top of the gums, and how secure they are depends on how well they fit. They are usually easy to adjust and relatively inexpensive compared to the other denture materials Cobalt chrome: A metal denture base made with cobalt chrome may be a good alternative if you have had CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 31

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE FLEXIBLE: ValplastÂŽ is a pink nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures

problems with an acrylic denture fracturing, as the metal base will not fracture. Dentures made of this metal are more expensive to make. Unlike an acrylic partial denture a cobalt chrome denture has the advantage of being able to be retained and supported with metal rests and clasps around some of the remaining natural teeth. This means it can be very secure in your mouth. Perhaps one possible disadvantage is very occasionally you may be able to see a very small amount of metal if a tooth nearer the front of your mouth is clasped, but your dentist would always endeavour to design the denture to reduce the chance of this happening. Although the denture base is made of metal the false teeth are white and attached to the metal with pink acrylic to look like natural gum and teeth. ValplastÂŽ: This is a pink "flexible" nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures only. It is supported only by your gums and does not have any metal clasps that will show. ValplastÂŽ will also give a life-time guarantee that the denture base will not fracture. Due to the flexibility of this material they are an alternative if you have had problems with an acrylic denture fracturing. There are certainly other advantages and disadvantages of all three denture materials, so without an examination with your dentist it would be difficult to determine what would be the best material for you. Every case where a denture is needed is different and needs to be assessed so the best material is used specifically for your requirements.

BRIDGES

Before I became a dentist, I did not have a clue what a bridge was. I am sure therefore there are many of you whom also do not know what they are. A bridge replaces a lost tooth or teeth by using either natural teeth or implants next to the gap and they are cemented in permanently. The natural teeth or implants beside the gap are used to support the false tooth/teeth. The proper dental term for the false tooth is the pontic and for the supports are called the abutments. They can be made from gold, metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic or a mixture of these materials. The pontic is permanently cemented to the abutment tooth. The natural teeth supporting the bridge must therefore be healthy and strong enough, just like the design of a bridge crossing a river; if the river is very wide, then mechanically a support on either bank may not be strong enough to support the crossing. Your dentist will examine and advise if the gap is suitable for a bridge. There are generally two reasons when a bridge is not suitable. The first is if the space to be filled is too long and secondly if the teeth at either side of the space are not strong and healthy enough to support it. There are generally 3 types of bridge. A fixed-fixed or conventional bridge involves attaching the pontic to abutment teeth on both sides of the gap.

This means the abutment teeth have to be drilled to the correct shape so a crown, or cap, will fit over the top of them. This procedure is destructive as the dentist needs to shape the abutment teeth with a drill and therefore there is always a risk of sensitivity or a problem with the nerve of the tooth at a later date. Your dentist will discuss the risks and benefits of any treatment with you. A cantilever bridge is when a single pontic is stuck to an abutment tooth with a crown on only one side of the gap. An acid etch or Maryland bridge is a small bridge replacing just a single tooth. The porcelain pontic is attached to a small metal wing which is cemented onto the back of only one tooth. The metal work is on the back so you cannot see it when you smile. Only the back of the abutment tooth needs to be slightly shaved and therefore there is very little drilling to be done. This type of bridge is much less destructive and therefore there is a smaller risk of sensitivity and nerve damage. Different bridge types also have their advantages and disadvantages, and may not be suitable for every gap. All cases are different and your dentist would need to assess your individual needs before planning a bridge.

IMPLANTS

It is my view that generally there is a huge misconception about implants. I'm sure some people think if they have poor teeth then they can simply have them removed and replaced with implants and then that's it! Job done and there is no maintenance! This could not be further from the truth as an implant still needs to be maintained and looked after. Just like a normal tooth an implant can have gum disease around it which can make it loose and fail. Not all implants will be a success and if they fail they have to be removed. What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone. An implant can be used to support just one false tooth, or multiple implants can be used to replace a full set of teeth. You have to have surgery to have an implant which involves the titanium post being screwed into the bone of either the upper or lower jaw. Before an implant is placed, you need to be assessed to determine if the condition of your jaw bone is good enough. There are also risk factors that need to be considered such as medical problems, smoking, the existing health of your teeth, gums and mouth as not everyone is suitable to have an implant. After surgery and once the bone has attached to the implant and it is strong then the false tooth or teeth are References www.valplast.com www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/bridgesand-partial-dentures www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/dental-health-bridges#1 www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/implants

then screwed into the implants. The implants need to be cleaned twice a day as part of your daily routine. Just like your natural teeth, implants will last longer the better you care for them. This also involves regular visits to the dentist to monitor and maintain them. It is vitally important that after you have implants you still go to the dentist regularly: having an implant does not mean you can forget about your teeth. Implants certainly do not come with a lifetime guarantee! The cost of implants varies but the price is definitely in the thousands not the hundreds. The parts are expensive to buy; they are like the Rolls Royce in replacing missing teeth. If I had a push bike, it would get me from A to B, just like a Rolls Royce, however if I needed a new tyre for my bike it would cost me 10s of pounds. However, If a needed a new tyre for my Rolls Royce (in my dreams I may add), then a new tyre would cost 100's of pounds. The point I am trying to make is the cost of the implant parts are expensive to buy initially but also to maintain and replace due to wear and tear. This has been a very brief whirlwind tour of all the options to replace missing teeth and is in no way a complete article. In summary there are many different options to replace a missing tooth or teeth. If you want to have a gap filled then it is best to visit your dentist and have a thorough assessment so they can discuss all the choices that suit your specific needs.

UPGRADE YOUR GARDEN

E

njoy your garden all year-round with a bespoke cabin or summerhouse from Plantsplus Garden Centre. From upgrading your potting shed or creating a space to socialise, we’ve asked our designer and expert, Cal Gowdy, to answer his most frequently asked questions before you jump in. Planning permission

Our buildings won’t need any planning permission as long you can tick off a few important things: You’re not building on the land of a listed building or within a conservation area; it’s not going in your front garden; it won’t take up more than 50% of your undeveloped garden. Heights can reach 4m, with anything over 2.5m requiring a 2m gap between the structure and the edge of your garden or fence.

Material

Our bespoke cabins and summerhouses at Plantsplus Garden Centre are made from kiln-dried Scandinavian or Baltic redwood which will reduce shrinkage. Bear in mind that there will be contraction and expansion with climatic conditions, so ensure you invest in a good paint or oil to keep it protected for longer. All our cabins have double-glazed windows, with the summerhouses being single glazed as standard. We don’t recommend using felt covering for your roof and instead pair our buildings with bitumen roof shingles or eco slates – 100% recycled and with the option of a few colours.

Heating

Your summerhouse or cabin comes with optional floor and roof insulation so you may want to think of having a power source for an electric heater in the cooler seasons. Whilst wall insulation and log burners are feasible, just be aware that they can double your 38

original cost and there are extra regulations to meet. Your height restrictions will also have to take into account any flue that reaches above the roof. A guttering kit is essential for looking after your external wooden walls, so put it to good use by collecting rainwater for your garden with an added water butt. In Summer the average household’s water use in the garden can spike to almost 70% of all water supplied, up from only 3% during the rest of the year. Not only will you be taking some strain off the environment, but you’ll be insuring yourself against hosepipe and sprinkler bans. Fancy learning more? Pop in to Plantsplus Garden Centre to view our show cabins and speak to a friendly member of our team. You’ll also find inspirational garden sheds, cabins, pods and much more on our NEW website www.plantsplus.co.uk also provides you with quality garden accessories that you won’t find in store.

SUNDAY NIGHT

INTRODUCING... THE RIVER COASTERS

T

he River Coasters are an indie two-piece based in Tynemouth. They are releasing a new EP this Summer, alongside a free launch gig at The Exchange in North Shields on July 20th. Here, Sam (lead vocals) and Jon (guitar) describe the songwriting process behind their coastal-themed music. Sam: Our new EP is called Drifting Sands, and it will feature a title track of the same name. Living by the sea has given our songs the imagery of breaking waves and windswept beaches - but we contrast this lyrical drama against upbeat rhythms. Jon: We like to use metaphors and tell short stories across our songs. They aren't always personal stories but we take inspiration from our surroundings. The song Drifting Sands has a laid back summer vibe, but has dark lyrics. We imagine a setting like Longsands Beach as the backdrop to a dramatic love story. Sam: The theme of longing for something or losing what you love appears in our music too. Our track Love Letter to the Sea tells a tale from the perspective of somebody longing to return to the coast that they know so well. It's a simple track that we feel people around us can relate to. Jon: Musically we work around a simple setup. I play the guitar and cajon in our live performances, and Sam accompanies lead vocals with a semi-acoustic ukulele. The combination of instruments has a nice blend, and makes for easy listening. It's a real pick-up-and-play arrangement. Sam: We like to play live in venues around the coast, where we live. The North East has a really nice music scene ideal for buskers, with places like the Surf Cafe (Tynemouth), the Left Luggage Room (Monkseaton) and of course The Exchange (North Shields). These are our favourite places to just show up and play, but also listen to the great variety of quality local music. Drifting Sands EP will be available on iTunes and Spotify on July 20th. f I had £1 each time somebody told me that they couldn’t get rid of something because their mother in law / friend / next door neighbour had given it to them; I’d be writing this from the Maldives. Gift giving and receiving is one of the key reasons we allow clutter into our homes and one of the key things to tackle if you’d like calm and ordered living space. I hear many reasons for not getting rid of things and I remind clients of a quote that has proved invaluable to me in my own quest for a simplified, organised free life: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” William Morris One of the most joyous parts of my business is finding the right home for unwanted things. Whether you recycle, give to charity, pass on to a friend or actually use the dustbin, here are a few top tips to start you on a decluttering journey: 1. START SMALL - don’t overwhelm yourself with a huge project to start with. I often ease clients into decluttering by starting off with that drawer in the kitchen – you know, the one with flyers, sellotape, a few elastic bands, an old fuse, phone charger and perhaps some cutlery. By starting off with a small space or area, you quickly get to see and feel the satisfaction of clearing and organising.

2. DON’T BUY STORAGE BOXES - it’s more clutter!! Friends of my facebook page will be familiar with #nostorageboxes. Existing baskets, shoe boxes, clear cupboards and drawers generally mean that the storage space is there – you just need to use it effectively. 3. YES, NO, MAYBE - there are lots of strategies on how to successfully declutter. Mine is to sort whichever space you are organising into three – “yes”, “no” and “maybe” piles. When finished, re-sort your “yes” pile into stuff going back into the space you have cleared and stuff to be put back elsewhere. Sort your “no” pile into things to sell, recycle, re home or throw away. Then turn your attention to your “maybe” pile and try to reduce it further by adding to your sorted “no” stuff. Whatever is leftover, think about the William Morris quote above to decide what you actually need to keep. 4. IDENTIFYING THE CLUTTER – The following highlights some of the things you should let go of now: Items you “should” use but don’t (exercise bikes). Things that cost a lot but you still don’t use (often clothes). Anything broken or inoperable that you are planning on fixing

• • •

• • • • • •

but haven’t (lamps) Heirlooms – see gift guilt (always pictures) Anything uncomfortable (see expensive clothes point) Duplicates – just in case. Magazines you’ll never get round to reading. Old electronics especially cables. Out of date paperwork

5. REMOVE IT FROM YOUR HOME The biggest mistake people make when embarking on decluttering is to think that once they’ve sorted their stuff, the job is done. Don’t make grand plans to put stuff on Ebay if you haven’t got the time or inclination. Make sure you take stuff to the charity shop and don’t just leave it in the boot of your car (and make sure you gift aid – it’s very satisfying). If passing on to friends or family, actually hand the item over. Whatever you decide to do, make sure the stuff leaves your house. DEALING WITH BUMPS IN THE ROAD

Sarah Howe, Director of 3 Curves fitness facility’s in the North East and a mother of two, advises how to stop beating yourself up when you slip up.

Y

ou’re at a friend’s house and, without thinking, you grab a dessert and eat it. Next you’re mindlessly eating crisps. In the minutes that follow, panic and guilt sets in – you’ve been working hard to follow a healthy eating plan, but now you’re fearful you’ll fall back into old habits. Does this situation sound familiar to you? At some point on your journey, you may experience a bump in the road, or slip-up. No one is perfect, so these bumps are perfectly normal. Learning to deal with the bump in a positive way is essential for long term success. Don’t beat yourself up when you slip, instead, consider it a learning experience. Here are some tools to help you navigate bumps in the road in a more positive way. Following these steps will help you learn from the past and handle bumps more effectively in the future. 1. Recognize the Bump - The bump in the road usually starts with a thought, place, feeling or action – the scale, stress at work or home, negative thoughts, office party, social gathering, holiday or vacation. Identifying some of your weaknesses is a strength because you can develop strategies to overcome these bumps in the road. 2. Pause & Examine - Take some time to talk or journal about how you are feeling, any negative thoughts you have or what’s going on in your life right now. You may need to phone a friend or connect with other women at Curves in club or online through the message boards. The Curves Community is full of women just like you. You’re not alone! When you share what you are experiencing, it strengthens your resolve. 3. Accept - Acceptance is more than just accepting that you had a moment of weakness. It’s about accepting that you’re not perfect. We don’t expect others to be perfect, so why do we expect something more from ourselves? It takes time to change behaviours. So, while

you may not get it right the first time, you’ll be stronger and more prepared to face a similar situation or experience in the future. Be patient, you are making great strides in improving your health. 4. Experience your feelings - Throughout this journey, it’s important you learn to experience your feelings in a healthy, positive way. Ignoring your feelings will only lead to internal turmoil and discontent. In fact, you may turn to food as a way of dealing with your emotions. Take some time to explore and understand your feelings. And realize that your feelings will pass – it may take a couple hours or a couple days, but your feelings will pass. 5. Forgiveness - Now it’s time to forgive yourself. It’s important that you place any feelings of shame or guilt in a journal or in the heart of a loving friend. Decide that you won’t let any bump in the road discourage your progress. This journey is about learning more about yourself. Consider this experience as an opportunity to shape you into a healthier, happier version of you. Once you’ve forgiven yourself, you can move on in your journey. When it comes to dealing with bumps in the road, you’ll often be faced with two decisions: one, you can choose to let your slip affect your progress, or two, you can learn more about yourself and move on in your journey. In the words of Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood….I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” There are going to be bumps in the road throughout your journey, but tomorrow is a new day, a new opportunity – a road less travelled by. In the past, you may have felt defeated by bumps in the road and often took the well-beaten path. Why not try a road less travelled and join your local Curves Club, we can help you through your health and fitness journey. Your perseverance through change will help you become stronger both mentally and physically. For more information on Curves Fitness visit www.curves.eu/uk

GENTS CHOIR LOOKING FOR NEW RECRUITS FOR THE NEW SEASON

E

veryone deserves a holiday or a rest after a busy period and that’s just what the members of Ashington & District Male Voice Choir are enjoying at present. 2019 has been a busy time for the members and there have been a number of concerts for community groups as well as a few special ones promoted by the choir. A full schedule needed regular rehearsals something which the members enjoy. The new season starting in September promises to be equally as busy with some exciting ventures climaxing with a major concert featuring choirs from all over the North East in The Sage. The Ashington & District MVC will be one of about 12 male choirs coming together for their own performance. The songs chosen for this event are being included in the choir’s concert schedule for the new season so local community groups who have concerts with the choir will hear some of these early in the year. Singing is also recognised as being excellent for helping to improve general health as well as social and mental health as a number of members will confirm.

Rehearsals following the short break resume on Thursday 29th August which also gives an ideal opportunity for any gents who would like to give it a try and see if choral singing could just be the thing for them. Rehearsals are also social events when the gents get together for a coffee and a chat. There are no auditions nor is there a need to read music, just a willingness to give singing a try and the first six weeks is a trial period to see if it is for you so why not come along to Stakeford & Bomarsund Welfare at 7.00pm on 29th August or any Thursday evening, you’ll be made very welcome. Just look us up on www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org or look us up on Facebook .

From start to finish, the Canny Clever guy was amazing, explaining everything in terms I could understand. CARING FOR YOUR PETS TEETH

D

ental disease is a very common problem in pet animals – cats, dogs, rabbits and small mammals are all affected by it. As humans we know how painful it can be to have a tooth root abscess or even something smaller like a mouth ulcer. Animals very rarely show signs of pain with dental disease but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain. It often isn’t until they improve after the dental procedure that we can appreciate the pain they were in before. The most common signs of dental disease are: • bad breath (halitosis) • drooling more • pawing at the mouth (particularly in cats) • choosing to eat softer foods • chewing on one side of their mouth • dropping food when trying to eat • change in behaviour, not as keen to play with toys and may become withdrawn In more severe cases you may even see missing teeth or a swollen face. We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist, but our pets are still eating their food. This means as an owner it can often be difficult to detect dental disease. Dental disease is a progressive disease in animals in the same way it is for humans. It changes over time and therefore different and ongoing treatment is likely to be needed at different stages in a pet’s life. Some animals (like some humans) are very fortunate and they have great teeth and dental health – these animals may need very little intervention throughout their life. Other animals are less fortunate and these animals can need dental treatment every 4-12 months.

WHAT IS DENTAL DISEASE?

Dental disease covers a variety of conditions - the one we most commonly see in cats and dogs is periodontal disease. This is caused by a build-up of food and bacteria in the mouth which leads to calculus formation and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This in turn leads to destruction of the structures that support the teeth (ligaments and bone). Over time the gums become red, swollen and sore, teeth then become loose and may start to fall out. 54

There are 4 stages of dental disease with 0 being a healthy mouth and 4 being severe dental disease. Stages 1 and 2 are potentially reversible with a combination of veterinary treatment and dedicated home care (brushing teeth). Stages 3 and 4 are irreversible and often lead to loss of teeth. In stage 4 dental disease the amount of bacteria in the mouth is so high it can enter the bloodstream and travel through the body and impact on different organs e.g. bacteria settles in the heart valves and causes a disease called endocarditis.

We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist.

It is impossible to examine an animal’s mouth completely when they are awake – the only way to carry out an effective and accurate dental examination is under general anesthetic. You may hear your vet refer to a COHAT – this stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. During a COHAT the vet will examine every tooth with a dental probe and complete a dental chart – the same thing that happens when we go to the dentist. Things noted include how inflamed the gums are, how much calculus build up there is and whether there is any destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. Any missing, fractured or abnormal teeth will also be noted. Following this assessment it may be necessary to carry out dental radiographs (x-rays) to look at the roots of the teeth – this enables the vet to better assess any attachment loss around the teeth and evaluate the roots for any problems e.g. tooth root abscess (the same as in humans). An ultrasonic scaler will be used to carry out scaling of the tooth and under the gum line, the teeth will also be polished. Extractions will be carried out as necessary. To get the best out of any dental treatment you need to brush your animal’s teeth at home, at least 3 times weekly and ideally every day. Our nurses are happy to give advice on how to do this – it’s a great thing to start with young animals as often they accept it easier when younger. If you ever have any concerns about your pet’s dental health the best thing to do is to book an appointment to see your vet where they can assess your pet and discuss any treatment if it is necessary. BRING YOUR POLAROID CAMERA BACK TO LIFE

D

o you have an old Polaroid camera languishing in a cupboard? Now is the perfect time to bring it back to life.

Polaroid Originals is the company that rose from the ashes of the discontinuation of Polaroid instant film in 2008 and is dedicated to analog instant photography in the original, iconic format. Back then, a number of chemical suppliers that existed solely to provide Polaroid with chemistry for film production went out of business. And over the course of the last decade some of the chemistry used in film production became unavailable for commercial use. Polaroid Originals faced the challenge of reinventing analog instant photography with the chemistry available, and over the past nine years has been gradually improving the processing and quality of instant film. Launched on September 13th, 2017, the 80th anniversary of the founding of Polaroid, Polaroid Originals makes instant film for Polaroid cameras, and refurbishes vintage cameras so they’re good as new. If you don’t own a vintage Polaroid camera new cameras are available. The OneStep 2 is a new Polaroid camera that blends

56

classic design with contemporary style. It’s inspired by Polaroid’s original OneStep, but updated to create a simple, easy-to-use instant camera that works straight out of the box – just pick up some i-Type instant film and you’re good to go. It’s got a high quality lens and a powerful flash to give you great photos every time, and this newly improved Viewfinder model makes framing your photos even more intuitive than before. Plus with its long-lasting rechargeable battery, you’ll always be ready to shoot, whether you’re on a brief excursion or a journey round the world. Now is the time to reaquaint yourself with instant analogue photography in an increasingly digital world. Photgraphic retailer, FotoSnaps are your local stockist for Polaroid Originals products. The Wallsend retailer offers a range of colour and black and white film for your vintage Polaroid camera, and they also have the new Polaroid OneStep 2 instant cameras available if you’re interested in starting a new hobby! We have been working really closely with the Park staff to carefully plan the course around Walltown Country Park, making use of the gradient of the landscape to add to the fun of the challenge. We’re really looking forward to the event and hope that this will be the first of many in the years to come.” Walltown Warrior is the crowning jewel in Northumberland National Park’s newly redeveloped activity programme which also includes guided walks, archery sessions and archaeology expeditions taking place across the summer. With only a limited number of spaces available on each wave across the two days, booking in advance is essential to avoid disappointment. Standard adult entry costs £16 and children aged six and over cost £8. All participants will receive a special Walltown Warrior goody bag and free entry into the Roman Army Museum at Vindolanda. Perfect for a family fun day out or for team building with a group of friends or colleagues, find out more about Walltown Warrior and reserve your place today at: www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/walltownwarrior
