Beautiful Things For Every Home
JULY SAW THE OPENING OF A BRAND NEW HOMEWARE AND GIFT SHOP IN MORPETH
B
rooks of Oldgate, a homeware and gift shop, is a new addition to Morpeth Town Centre, and hosts a wonderful selection of one-off pieces for the home. Their unique items and gift ideas are sourced from a range of local suppliers, providing beautiful things for every home and taste, all at very reasonable prices.
They are a family business, run by Keith, Tracey and their daughter Sophie. The idea for the shop came from Tracey's lifelong love of interior design & furnishings. From a very early age Tracey has always moved furniture around, painted, wallpapered and decorated, much to the frustration of the family at times! Tracey loves being able to create something from nothing, or to transform an item into an object of beauty. Such was her passion for interiors, a few years ago Tracey decided to start the families first business; Dollys. She made hand painted wine glasses and handmade gifts, and could be found many a weekend with a stall at craft fairs and country shows all around the region. As Tracey's reputation for the quality of her hand painted glassware grew, it got to the stage where it was no longer a hobby and turned into a business. In 2016, Tracey and her daughter Sophie took the next step, gave up their jobs, and opened Dollys & Daisys, a Tearoom & Gift Shop in Amble. The gift shop is home to many items handmade by Tracey. However, the space was never big enough for Tracey to indulge her love of all furniture and home wares, hence the opening of Brooks of Oldgate. In July, husband Keith opened Brooks of Oldgate, and Tracey is his number one supplier, as the originality of her designs and quality of her work is second to none. The family looked long and hard for a premises for this business, and were delighted to find the
6
ideal shop in Morpeth. Many of the other items for sale in the shop are sourced from suppliers who cannot be found in any other shop in Morpeth. Keith and Tracey are forever looking for new unique suppliers who can offer high quality, unique products, but at a price that fits in with their policy of offering their customers affordable and good value pieces. The family also search tirelessly to find furniture so they can up-cycle them and offer them for sale, always at reasonable prices. They also try to

use local crafters who they have met at the many events they attend, and this too gives the shop many unique and one-off items. Originally from Durham, Keith told us “Morpeth reminds me a lot of the old town of Durham, with its lovely river walks, beautiful parks, boating on the river, local independent shops, national retailers and friendly locals.” He continued “We have tried to create a friendly, comfortable, enjoyable space for people to browse the many items we have on display and hope they like them as much as we do.”

SUNDAY FOR SAMMY IS 20! TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FOR SUNDAY FOR SAMMY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWS AT NEWCASTLE UTILITA ARENA
SUPER SUNDAY: The shows return to the arena in 2020 with a host of stars
F
ollowing the astonishing success of the 2018 sell-out, Sunday for Sammy returns to the Newcastle Utilita Arena for two spectacular 20th Anniversary shows. The concerts, locally dubbed The Geordie Command Performance, are held every two years in memory of Geordie actor Sammy Johnson who died suddenly in 1999. The 2018 shows, the first to be held at the Arena, were hailed as the best ever by fans who travelled from all over the North East and beyond to be part of the fun. Sunday for Sammy, which was staged at Newcastle City Hall for 16 years, has become one of the ‘must-see’ events in the regional entertainment calendar. Over 10,000 fans flocked to Newcastle Arena for the 2018 show and the organisers are expecting another speedy sell-out in 2020. Tim Healy, Denise Welch, Mark Knopfler, Kevin Whately, Charlie Hardwick, Jimmy Nail, Jill Halfpenny, Jason Cook, Timothy Spall, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Christopher Fairbank, Mattie Healy, Stephen Tomkinson, John Miles, Angie Lonsdale,
VERA: Brenda Blethyn brought the house down in the 2018 show
10 10
Joe McElderry, Brendan Healy, Donna Aire, Ant and Dec, Chelsea Halfpenny, Billy Mitchell, Brendan Foster, Pam Royle, Bob Moncur, Julia Tobin and many, many more have previously given up their time to take part in the show. The cast list is never revealed beforehand and every show is packed with surprises. None bigger than the reception given to actress Brenda Blethyn who brought the house down with her appearance as Vera in the 2018 show. The award-winning actress said: ‘Never in my entire career has an audience welcomed my appearance on stage as wildly and enthusiastically as the audience for Sunday For Sammy welcomed VERA. It was deafening and I’ll cherish the memory of it for ever. The warmth and enthusiasm for the entire show was overwhelming. Thank you. I’m so happy and honoured to have taken part.’ Chairman of the Sunday for Sammy Trust, Tim Healy commented: “It’s hard to believe that it will be twenty years since the first Sunday for Sammy. The show has become a part of our lives and also part of North East Culture. It makes me so proud to know that an idea that Jimmy Nail and I dreamed up to maintain the memory of our pal Sammy has so far raised over £530K to support young performers and creatives in the North East.” Show producer Ray Laidlaw added: “The Newcastle Utilita Arena is now the natural home for Sunday for Sammy. The 2018 show was a huge hit with both the audience and the performers. The success of the 2018 concert DVD, which reached No 3 in the UK charts, has helped to spread the word even further. We’re looking forward to another spectacular event. Every year, the tickets sell faster so I’d urge fans not to leave it till the last minute to guarantee your part in the 20th anniversary shows.” Tickets are on-sale from the Utilita Arena and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. MORPETH’S LONGEST COFFEE MORNING...AND YOU’RE INVITED! HAVE YOUR EARS CHECKED AND CLEANED AT A DISCOUNTED RATE AND HELP MACMILLAN AT THE SAME TIME
MONDAY 23RD TO FRIDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER
W
e’ve all heard of Macmillan Cancer Support and the fantastic coffee mornings that are hosted around the country every year, to raise money to help individuals through a very difficult time. For more than 100 years, Macmillan has provided support in all aspects of a person’s life that are affected when a cancer diagnosis is made – health, money, family, job to name a few. This year, House of Hearing are getting involved by holding Morpeth’s longest coffee morning and they’d like to invite you to join them. Between Monday 23rd and Friday 27th September, the House of Hearing clinic in Morpeth will be holding daily coffee mornings from 10am – 1pm. For all wax removal appointments taking place at these coffee mornings, they’ll donate £5 to Macmillan for every ear cleared. So instead of microsuction on both ears costing you the standard price of £80, they’ll charge you £70 and donate £10 to Macmillan. Or if you only have wax removed from one ear, you will pay £55 instead of the standard £60 and they’ll donate £5 to Macmillan. Not only will you be able to have your ears checked and wax removed by their ENT nurse trained specialists in a state-of-the-art clinic at a discounted rate, but you can enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of cake afterwards and feel great about helping a wonderful charity at the same time. Sarah Gregg, Senior Audiologist at House of Hearing, Morpeth explained “Macmillan is a charity close to 12
my heart, with relatives who have benefitted from the wonderful work they do. This was a great opportunity to get involved with both donating to a worthy cause and providing a much-needed wax removal service to those in the local area and beyond. We’re really excited about not only holding Morpeth’s longest coffee morning but seeing if we can see the largest number of wax removal patients in a week.” “At House of Hearing we are passionate about aural health care and providing a full wax removal service with appointments available at short notice is in high demand. Ear care is an important aspect of our health that is often overlooked. However, a build-up of wax can be very uncomfortable, often resulting in earache, hearing loss, itchiness and exacerbating tinnitus, so people don’t want to have to wait too long to be seen. We anticipate that the people in Morpeth and the surrounding area will welcome the opportunity to come into our dedicated Audiology clinic for their 30 minute wax removal appointment and help Macmillan at the same time.” If you would like to book into one of their coffee morning appointments, please call their specialist team on 01670 333 777. Alternatively, House of Hearing have wax removal appointments and ear health check appointments available daily, Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm at their clinic on 55 Bridge Street, Morpeth. They look forward to welcoming you.

MORPETH FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL COMING THIS OCTOBER
SATURDAY 5TH & SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER
M
orpeth Food and Drink Festival is an annual celebration of local food and drink, held over 2 days, 5th and 6th October, in the centre of the town. It is a not-for-profit community event organised by a select committee of local partners led by Sanderson Arcade. The festival, now in its seventh year, is held annually on the first weekend in October, and links with the local farmers market which is held the first Saturday of every month on the Market Place. Since its inception, the festival has grown year on year, and now features over 100 food and drink traders. It is also home to a Demonstration Kitchen, playing host to some of the most talented local chefs demonstrating a range of different dishes. Over the years our kitchen has had demos from; David MacDonald from Geordie Bangers,Giovanni Marabini from Lollo Rosso, Ben Stephenson Award Winning Chocolatier from North Chocolates and Miss Lorna Robertson, Masterchef Finalist, all hosted by Matt Bailey. There is also a Live Music Stage, sponsored by Morpeth Town Council, showcasing the very best of local musical talent. The Live Music stage is situated outside of Morpeth Chantry, directly opposite The Street Food Quarter, providing the perfect place to sit with friends, tuck into a pizza and take in all the local talent on stage. Quality is key throughout the festival and, although there are over 100 food/drink traders, the organisers try their best to offer a bit of everything, from locally distilled gin to fresh cuts of meat. 14
The Street Food Quarter is a dedicated area where you can taste some of the best street food traders from the North East. Another unique area is the Posh Pen, sponsored by Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade, a secluded drinking area where you can enjoy a glass of prosecco while listening to the live music. New for 2019 there will be a Vegan Hall held at Morpeth Town Hall which will be transformed into all things vegan, filled with local producers and traders of speciality vegan products - adding to the variety the festival offers in terms of local traders and food and drink. The monthly Farmers Market accompanies the festival, and you will find only the best local producers here. As the festival began to expand and increase attendance from hundreds to thousands a Park and Ride scheme was introduced. Buses run from County Hall to Morpeth Bus Station - bringing attendees straight into the Town Centre.. Plastics is a hot topic in current news, and this year the festival are building a sustainability plan and, for the first year ever, ban single-use plastic bags. All traders will be provided with paper bags, and attendees will be encouraged to bring bags along or purchase our cotton bags. There is also a GREEN TEAM on site who will police this and look at ways they can reduce the use of plastics across the whole festival. Visit www.sandersonarcade.co.uk/events/morpeth-foodand-drink-festival-2019 for more information.

CONFUSED ABOUT CORE STRENGTH EXERCISES FOR CHRONIC BACK PAIN? MSK HEALTHCARE & PERFORMANCE CLINIC DISCUSS THE USE OF CORE STRENGTH EXERCISES FOR HELPING CHRONIC BACK PAIN
W
hen it comes to back pain, so many claims are made on what works and what doesn’t. It is very difficult for any healthcare professional let alone a patient to be truly confident that there are adopting an evidence-based approach given the lack of consistency in the evidence.
Research does support including core strength into a rehabilitation programmes however, current literature is somewhat lacking clarity on any definitive pathway or programme. Reviewing the latest research on whether the benefits of core stability exercises over general exercise was better in reducing pain and back mobility. In the short term yes, but there was no difference in the longterm benefits between these two groups of exercise approaches Most rehabilitation programmes for back pain incorporate what is called low-load motor control exercise which targets the stabilizing muscles of the stomach and back. These are the exercises that are about engaging your stomach and core muscles which many people would have come across before such as planks, crunches and such like. Another popular exercise type is Pilates, which is often the go to exercises for core strength. Studies have shown Pilates to have significant improvement in reducing back pain. However, no solid evidence has suggested Pilates to be superior over other forms of exercise. In recent years high loading exercise such as deadlifts, squats, clean and jerk and kettlebell swings
16
have become popular in maximizing power and strength in the back and reducing back pain. Deadlift’s has high activation of the stabilizing muscles more so, than Swiss ball exercises often used in gym training classes. With the angular movement of several joints occurring in the back during the deadlift a large majority of the body muscle such as back extensors and trunk muscles are put under stress helping to improve strength and power. So, which exercises are best for chronic back pain, high-load (deadlifts) or low-load (activation exercises) or perhaps Pilates? Surprisingly all are similar in their benefits in today’s current research. There are certain studies that show one type more favourable over the other however, in general both low-level and high-level and Pilates achieve similar outcomes. It can all be very confusing, what is apparent is the need to adopt a sensible approach in core stability rehabilitation. The evidence for core strength is patchy at least, although good core strength is important to reduce injury and help back pain Here in clinic, we don’t get too fixed on having patients doing planks etc, despite it being fashionable. Often there is a misplaced belief that core stability strength is the silver bullet of back pain, yet evidence doesn’t support this as robustly as one may think it is still debatable. At the MSK healthcare clinic we use various rehab programmes for back pain that are bespoke to the person. Core exercise is good, but general exercise is often shown to be on par. It’s striking the balance and finding what works for the individual and most importantly what is sustainable in the long term the individual. ONLY A MONTH TO GO FOR TOURISM VOTE DEADLINE
T
he countdown is on for votes to help Northumberland retain its crown as the Best Destination in the UK. Voting for the British Travel Awards closes in a month’s time on September 30 and Northumberland County Council and Northumberland Tourism are urging businesses, residents and visitors to vote for the county to retain the title. Last year Northumberland finally picked up the Gold for the Best Destination/County at the British Travel Awards having been runner-up behind Cornwall for the previous four years. The winner of the prestigious award will be announced on November 27 at an event in London. The push for votes comes on the back of the latest tourism figures for Northumberland revealed that more than 10 million people visited the county in 2018 spending more than £1 billion. Cllr Cath Homer, cabinet member for Culture, Art, Leisure and Tourism at Northumberland County Council
AI Garage Doors
said: “Winning the award last year was an unbelievable achievement for the whole county and demonstrated the hardwork and dedication of everyone involved in the tourism industry. The award has been a real game changer for the county with a whole host of other accolades for Northumberland coming off the back of it. Added to these, the latest tourism figures show that Northumberland continues to be the destination of choice for visitors. “We want to ensure that Northumberland retains its rightful crown as the Best Destination in the UK so we need everyone to get behind us and vote for Northumberland before the deadline in four weeks time.” To vote go to www.vote4northumberland.com

NEW PLAYPARK UNVEILED IN BEDLINGTON
A
new £80,000 play area has recently been opened at Gallagher Park in Bedlington.
It’s the latest development in a number of improvement projects at the park over the last few years that has seen the construction of a BMX track, downhill mountain bike trails, a new sports and community pavilion and promoted walking routes. The creation of the new playpark was funded through the County Council's Parks Enhancement Programme along with local county councillors. Other funding contributions came from the Friends of Gallagher Park and West Bedlington Town Council. The brand new park is home to a good selection of play items and is suitable for all young children from toddlers upwards. There is ample seating, all in full view of the playpark, and it is enclosed for extra safety. Earlier this year the Council’s Cabinet agreed spending of over £200,000 towards the total of £287,000 on improvement projects at five of the county’s parks. Gallagher Park is an extremely popular local amenity, and as well as the sporting facilities is home to woodlands, wildflower meadows and large green spaces. As well as the new play area, further improvements are in the pipeline. The local cycle club are currently raising funds to develop the BMX track and the Friends group are
about to carry out some woodland management on the hill to improve views out over the surrounding countryside. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “This is a lovely Park with woodland walks and great playing fields but the play area was very run down. We’re delighted to have this brand new facility open just in time for the summer holidays and with the current spell of hot weather it’s perfect for youngsters to come along and enjoy. “Our parks are focal points for local communities of all ages and we’ve worked closely with ward members, the Friends group and the local town council to ensure a first class play area here for generations to come.

USING EXERCISE TO HELP MANAGE DIABETES
By Sarah Howe
P
hysical activity, or exercise, is a great tool to help manage your diabetes. It is a very important part of your diabetes treatment plan and can help you feel your healthiest.
Physical activity is valuable because it can lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, raise HDL ("good cholesterol"), promote weight loss, improve blood circulation, help the body better use insulin, reduce stress, increase flexibility and make you feel better... that’s a lot of compelling reasons to get active! Before you start exercising you should have your doctors permission. You don’t need any equipment apart from some comfortable clothing and properly fitting trainers. Start your activity slowly and increase gradually. Your goal should be to exercise at least 30 minutes, five days per week, or as recommended by your health care professional . A 30-minute session may be broken up into three 10-minute sessions. Start by setting some realistic goals with the help of your health care professional. It could be to lose a specific amount of weight or to exercise for a set amount of time each week. Then make a plan and identify ways to increase your physical activity. Try to go out of your 24
way to be more active and decrease inactivity. For example, walking to the local shop instead of driving or joining your local Curves facility.
Safety tips for exercising •
Managing your weight
If you are overweight, losing as little as 5-10kg can help lower your blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. You will lessen the strain on your bones and joints and will feel better all around. Begin by keeping track of what, when, where, and how you eat now. Make a plan and identify which habits you will change now and which ones you will change later. Set realistic goals. Up to ½ kilogram weight loss per week is a reasonable goal. It goes without saying that combining exercise with healthy eating will make managing your diabetes easier. Try to eat a variety of foods from all the food groups and avoid fad diets that eliminate whole food groups. Try to eat smaller portions, which will help you consume less calories and fat and avoid skipping meals which will affect your blood sugar. At Curves we can help you to achieve your health goals and make exercise a permanent way of life. If

To decrease the risk of low blood sugar, check your blood sugar before you begin your session. If it's over 12mmol/l or if urine shows ketones, delay the activity until your blood sugar levels are under 12mmol/l. If your blood sugar is below 6mmol/l, you might need a snack before beginning the activity. The best time for a session is 30 minutes to one hour after eating a meal. Check your feet for blisters/sores before and after any physical activity. If you take medicine that lowers blood sugar levels, carry a carbohydrate source such as glucose tablets or glucose containing drinks. Include a 5 to 10 minute warmup and cool down. Drink water before, during, and after physical activity. Try to exercise with someone. Check your blood sugar after an activity. For some people, exercise can lower blood sugar for up to 24 hours. Carry diabetes identification.

LOCAL NEWS
GENTS CHOIR LOOKING FOR NEW RECRUITS FOR THE NEW SEASON
E
veryone deserves a holiday or a rest after a busy period and that’s just what the members of Ashington & District Male Voice Choir are enjoying at present. 2019 has been a busy time for the members and there have been a number of concerts for community groups as well as a few special ones promoted by the choir. A full schedule needed regular rehearsals something which the members enjoy. The new season starting in September promises to be equally as busy with some exciting ventures climaxing with a major concert featuring choirs from all over the North East in The Sage. The Ashington & District MVC will be one of about 12 male choirs coming together for their own performance. The songs chosen for this event are being included in the choir’s concert schedule for the new season so local community groups who have concerts with the choir will hear some of these early in the year. Singing is also recognised as being excellent for helping to improve general health as well as social and mental health as a number of members will confirm.
Rehearsals following the short break resume on Thursday 29th August which also gives an ideal opportunity for any gents who would like to give it a try and see if choral singing could just be the thing for them. Rehearsals are also social events when the gents get together for a coffee and a chat. There are no auditions nor is there a need to read music, just a willingness to give singing a try and the first six weeks is a trial period to see if it is for you so why not come along to Stakeford & Bomarsund Welfare at 7.00pm on a Thursday evening, you’ll be made very welcome. Just look us up on www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org or look them up on Facebook .

A SORE SUBJECT
Root canal therapy is a phrase that strikes fear in most of us, but it shouldn’t according to Andrew Ratsey, Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice. Here he discusses the misunderstandings about the procedure.
R
oot canal therapy is one of the least understood and most feared dental procedures.
When patients are informed they need a root canal they often respond with apprehension and dread. But is this reputation deserved? Are root canals something to fear? The short answer is no. Modern techniques allow for pain free and comfortable procedures. Would you believe me if I said root fillings are the most common treatment patients fall asleep through? In this article I will look to set the record straight about root canal therapy. I will discuss why we do root canal, how we do it and most importantly why it is nothing to fear.
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
A root canal is a dental procedure that is used to save a tooth that would otherwise be extracted. The medical term for root canal therapy is Endodontics from the Latin Endo, meaning inside and
Dont, meaning tooth. This is fundamentally what we are doing; we are treating the inside of the tooth. Teeth are made up of different layers. The outside is the hard enamel; underneath is the dentine and in the centre of the tooth is the pulp which consists of blood vessels and nerves . The pulp is the area we are interested in when we perform root canal therapy.
WHY DO YOU NEED ROOT CANAL?
The main reason you would need a root canal is because bacteria has got into the pulp. Bacteria can enter the tooth either by a hole made by tooth decay, or by trauma that exposes the pulp. Once the bacteria is inside your tooth it begins to break down the blood vessels and nerves. This can lead to pain as the pulp becomes inflamed and swollen. As the pulp swells the pressure builds up inside the hard tooth. The pain associated with an inflamed pulp is severe and can be constant. The pain may stop you sleeping and even painkillers may not take it away, making you feel thoroughly miserable. Patients when asked to rate this pain often describe it as 10 out of 10. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
31
CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
Occasionally bacteria can enter a tooth and not cause any pain. Initially this may mean you are unaware there is anything wrong. However as the bacteria spreads through the root breaking down the nerve, by-products are produced. These by-products are highly toxic and when they start to exit the root, your body tries to create a barrier between the infected tooth and the rest of your body. To achieve this specialist immune cells begin to destroy the bone around the tooth. As the bacteria continues to spread your immune system brings more troops into the area. As the immune cells attack the bacteria they begin to fill the space in the bone with puss and fluid. This is a dental abscess, and whilst not in the same league as the pain associated with the inflamed nerve, it is still sore enough to really spoil your day.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
To fix the problem the infected pulp needs to be removed and there are two methods of doing this. Your first option is to extract the tooth. Removing the tooth will remove the infected tissue within the tooth, but will mean you have lost a tooth and have a gap which may affect your

smile or how well you can eat and chew. Your second option is to save the tooth and involves the removal of all the bacteria and infected pulp from within the tooth, then sealing it back up so no new bacteria can get back in. This is the process known as the root canal filling.
THE PROCEDURE
The first and most important stage of treatment is getting the patient out of pain. The good news is this is really simple. For all their nasty side effects, bacteria are fairly easy to upset. Removing the tooth decay and opening up the space in the centre of the tooth, (the pulp), is enough to alleviate the symptoms in most cases. If the dentist has enough time then the root canal can be completed in one go, but most often the procedure is completed on subsequent visits. First the diseased pulp needs to be fully removed from inside the tooth. This is followed by a thorough rinse with a strong anti-bacterial solution to kill any bacteria left behind. Once the tooth is completely clean on the inside then it is dried, and finally a filling is placed which seals the top of the root down to the tip of the root so that no more bacteria can get back in. The final part of treatment is to restore the top of the tooth, and place either a permanent filling or a crown to completely seal the tooth and root canal system. This will return the tooth back to full function.
IS IT EFFECTIVE?
What many people say when they are told that they need a root canal is that they have heard that they don’t work. This is simply not true. Studies have shown that when root canals are performed to a high standard then the success rate is over 90%. If the tooth can be cleansed of bacteria and no new bacteria introduced during the treatment, then the healing process will begin.
DOES IT HURT?
This is another common misconception about root canal fillings. Modern anaesthetics delivered to the right areas around the infected tooth can successfully numb the tooth and allow pain free treatment. It often takes longer to freeze up than for a standard filling, but it will get there. The reason for this is when the nerve becomes inflamed, the inflammation alters how the anaesthetic works on the tooth, meaning you may need slightly more or different types of anaesthetic. Once numb you can really just relax as the treatment will be comfortable. Another factor that has improved patient comfort is the creation of super soft metals from which the instruments used to shape the root canals are made. Historically the instruments used in root canal were made from steel that was much stiffer and harder. This created a lot of vibration and pressure which many patients found unpleasant. The new metal alloys allow for instruments that gently and smoothly shape the inside of the tooth, leading to a much more pleasant experience.

SO WHY DOES IT HAVE SUCH A BAD REPUTATION?
There’s no denying that root canal has a reputation that needs repairing. The treatments of previous generations has left a real mark on the general population. One of the issues is lack of positive stories, whilst people will readily recount stories of bad experiences, few stories are ever heard of the great root filling they had. Root canals can be performed by any dentist, routine cases can be conducted to a very high standard and allow for great healing. Occasionally the root canal system can form unusual shapes that make achieving the high standard to allow healing difficult for a general dentist. At this point the services of a dentist who has trained further in Endodontology can be employed. These dentists use high magnification devices and specific knowledge so that the finest details of the

complex root canal system can be easily seen and treated, meaning they are more likely to get a successful outcome. Root canals are not to be worried about or feared. Modern techniques allow for pain free and successful treatments, but if you are unsure the best thing to do is to speak to your dentist. They will be able to reassure you and recommend the best course of treatment for you.
Andrew Ratsey is an enthusiastic Dental Surgeon with a passion for endodontics, (he just loves it!). He has completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontology with merit but was awarded a distinction in his clinical assessments. Andrew is currently working towards his MSc in Endodontics and has just completed his thesis on how the manufacture of endodontic instruments affect their ability to shape the root canal system. This has given him a unique insight into the most appropriate instruments to use in a given situation. Andrew is committed to providing the highest quality of root canal treatment using the latest equipment and techniques. OUT & ABOUT
THE INK SPOT
PINT SIZED PUBS
Over the last few years we have seen a new type of pub spring up in local towns around the region - the micro pub. These welcome additions to local high streets offer drinkers a muchwelcomed alternative to big chain venues or standard run of the mill pubs. Most micro pubs are independently run and support small local breweries - fantastic for the region as a whole. Here are three of the best in the local area, as well as a couple from slightly further afield..
THE INK SPOT Newbiggin
The Box Wood Tap, based in the heart of Bedlington Front Street, is a very welcome and popular addition to the Bedlington pub scene. Bedlington’s first micro-pub has already proved exceptionally popular with Bedlington locals and real ale fans from further afield. So popular in fact that it has recently doubled in size, taking over the premises next door! Small in size but not in welcome or choice of beverages, the additional spaces has allowed for extra seating and caters for the ever-growing clientele. It serves mainly North East beers, Rigg & Furrow are popular, as are Anarchy, Almasty, Great North Eastern Brewing Co and Box Social – and the fast selling Double Maxim. The fastest seller has so far been Two By Two IPA, with the first delivery actually selling out in four hours. There’s also a big keg demand for Tiny Rebel, Cloudwater and Wander Beyond. Monthly food nights – which could be pizza, Cuban food, Spud Gun, Acropolis Street Food or Good Times Tacos are very popular and most weeks fill to capacity. The Box Wood tap is as dog-friendly as you’ll get anywhere – in fact, the owner has two Bedlington terriers himself and a photo on his phone of every dog that has come into the pub. He is even going to make a montage out of the photos! There is a big demand in Bedlington for a pub of this nature, and thankfully it’s being fulfilled!
The Ink Spot is a small, family run, and community-minded craft ale bar based in the heart of Newbiggin. The bar is owned and run by Angie and Simon, who are self-confessed real ale lovers. When they realised the premises, an old tattoo shop in the coastal village, was available, they had a lightbulb moment. They wanted to do something in the community, and something they were passionate about, and The Ink Spot was the result. They only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at the moment because they both still work full time, but are both hoping this could become a full time venture. The interior of the bar reflects their own interest in music, books, art, tattoos, and a certain amount of activism. This is something new for the village, and they are proud to be part of the weekend "night out" experience for locals and visitors alike. They currently serve four draught ales from CAMRAapproved keykegs using an eco-friendly system which keeps the beer free from any additional gas injection, meaning it comes to you exactly as the brewer intended. They try to get a varied selection of the best ales they can while retaining a price point for the community. Also on offer are a range of local bottled ales from Cullercoats, Allendale, Alnwick, Wylam, and Hadrian Border Breweries, a selection of gins, red wine, white wine, Prosecco, and a handful of bottled ciders. The bar operates an over-21s only policy, and they don’t allow vaping on the premises. All well-behaved dogs are welcome!

THE BOX WOOD TAP - Bedlington
36
THE BOX WOOD TAP
ENIGMA TAP - North Shields The Enigma Tap, a name inspired by Thomas Brown, of North Shields, who in 1942 retrieved documents from a sinking German U-Boat which were critical to cracking the Enigma Code, is North Shields first micro pub. The pub, based on Bedford Street in the town centre, focus on sourcing local products and being environmentally friendly. They are using reclaimed wood for furniture and are committed to having a plastic-free operation. They support local breweries and have a wide selection of cask and keg offerings. Some of the most recent additions to the list include Northern IPA from Hadrian Border Brewery, Azacca Pale from the Almastybrewingco and the malty classic Red Gown from Firstandlastbrewery. There is a selection of nibbles and food offerings, as well as various street food nights and their popular quiz nights. Keep updated with new beverages and what’s on on their Facebook page.
THE OFFICE - Morpeth
The Office is set in the former Old Toll House, a Grade II-listed building, based in Morpeth Town Centre. Owners Paul and Andrea Johnson had to “jump through hoops” to convert from its former use as a sweetie shop (which lay vacant for 18 months). Before that it had been many things, including a fire station and has a rich and varied history. Since its opening in 2014 it has received massive support from local ale lovers and has become a firm fixture in Morpeth’s discerning drinkers’ circuit. The church pew seating came from St Aiden’s Church at Stobhill and local artist’s works – for sale – decorate the walls, the plan is to attract even more. The pub is developing organically, and customers donate bits and pieces to decorate the place, such as a Royal Navy cap and good luck charms from all over the world. The bar serves a number of ales, local craft keg beers, ciders and national keg beers. New additions include Dark Horse from borninthebordersbrewery, Azacca Pale Ale from Almost Brewing Co. Legally Blonde from The Old Potting Shed and Hickery The Rake from the renowned Wylam Brewery. The bar was awarded the Local CAMRA South East Northumberland Pub of the year in 2016 and is a “peoplewatchers’” paradise with streams of bypasses and traffic constantly on the move outside. FRONT STREET TAP HOUSE - Monkseaton Earlier this year Monkseaton welcomed the very cool Front Street Tap House, specialising in real ales and rum. The micropub, based at 17b Front Street, is owner James Benson’s first venture, having decided to take control of his own destiny after he was made redundant from customer service roles. Mr Benson took over an empty unit on the front street and has turned it in to a fantastic addition to the coastal micro pub circuit. 17b Front Street, Monkseaton, NE25 8AQ Facebook: @fstaphouse 37

MAKING SUSTAINABLE GARDENING CHOICES FOR A BLOOMING FUTURE
A
s retailers and consumers, we’re all being tasked with making environmentally responsible decisions to ensure our love of gardening does not cause harm to our delicate ecosystems and planet. There are a some immediate, yet simple changes you can make.
Phacelia are a fantastic source of food for pollinators
REDUCE PEAT USE
Whilst peat has long been touted as a nutritious and organic feed for your garden, pressure has been put on the industry to back away from what is seen to be a destructive activity to our natural landscape and wildlife. Along with starting your own compost heap, green manure is a fantastic way to put organic nutrients into the ground – great for raised beds and vegetable patches. Lupins and Phacelia can both be grown from seed, with the added benefit of a striking floral display and fantastic source of food for pollinators such bees and butterflies. They’ll also attract hoverflies that will kill garden pests such as aphids.

Westland’s New Horizon is 100% peat free, natural and sustainable
There are many benefits to buying from your local plant nursery
Our biggest supplier of growing media has released a statement outlining the hard work they are doing to better the industry. Keith Nicholson of Westland Horticulture said, “Now over 70% of total material used in Westland products is non-peat which will be furthered in 2020, headlined by our move to reduce peat content in the UK’s lead[ing] compost, Multi-Purpose with John Innes - Single biggest step in driving the industries peat reduction. We have also already achieved “zero to landfill” in all our facilities and have removed over 800 tonnes of plastic from our product packaging, including growing media.” Look out for Westland’s New Horizon brand – it’s 100% peat free, natural, sustainable and suitable for all indoor and outdoor plants, as well as vegetables.
BUY BRITISH
Buy British for pest control, and even better, local for carbon footprint reduction. When you buy from a local plant nursery you can feel confident knowing that no foreign bugs as diseases will be compromising the health of your plants or the natural wildlife; there is massive reduction in greenhouse gases from transport; having been grown under the same daylight hours as your own
garden with no extreme temperature changes, your plants should be hardier, requiring fewer pesticides, water and fertilizer… with an added bonus that you can ask to speak to the growers of homegrown plants for free in-store to really understand how best to maintain your garden purchases. Whilst garden centres continue to make strides in their sustainable practices, it is the demands of consumer that makes the biggest industry waves and together, all our small improvements should make a huge impact on the environment. At Plantsplus, we have a Shades of Green environmental policy which illustrates our continued effort to respond to environmental and community issues that affect all of our customers, staff and suppliers. Current sustainability projects include: LED Lighting, Photovoltaic panels, Rainwater collection, Electric car charging points, Working towards a digital office, Reduction of plastic pots in our nursery, and Landscaping for wildlife. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 46

IT SIMPLY HAS TO BE WOOL! Make the right choice when choosing a carpet for your home with Michael Metcalf Carpets
C
hoosing a wool carpet for your home will undoubtedly add luxury, and enhance the appearance of any space, but a purchase of such a carpet has many additional longer term advantages.
Wool is an amazing design of nature which can resist the toughest elements, making it a naturally hardwearing product. But this fibre is also surprisingly easy to maintain, because wool has inherent abilities to resist staining as a result of the natural wax that coats its surface. This coating helps stop dirt from penetrating, thus leaving any soiling on the surface which enables easy cleaning. This awesome product from sheep is also anti-allergenic, and research shows that a wool-rich carpet can reduce airborne dust in the home by trapping it in its top layer. As wool naturally absorbs humidity and airborne toxins, this results in a cleaner, more comfortable living environment, improving indoor air quality. Due to the natural crimped structure of the fibre of wool, it does not easily ignite nor does it melt, drip, or release noxious fumes, making it an all round safer option for the home. The material also acts as a fantastic insulator, with millions of tiny air pockets creating a thermal barrier that retains heat, giving that soft, warm feeling underfoot. In the home, approximately 10-20% of heat is lost through the floor, and so wool carpets can save an average of 11% on domestic energy consumption. Interestingly, the British sheep population is the most cosmopolitan in the world, with over sixty different breeds cared for by more than forty thousand sheep farmers on hills and lowlands. This massive variety in wool type feeds down to the carpet manufacturers and allows for the production of many different ranges of carpet from chunky boucle's, right through to the finest velvet finish, and

ULSTER CARPETS
from course tough heavy duty wool, to softer pile finishes. British wool also looks great without going through the dyeing process, and some carpets are made in this fashion, offering a beautiful, natural look. The heather tones and flecks seen in British wool are a unique fibre characteristic of British sheep breeds. Michael Metcalf Carpets of Morpeth prides itself on having probably the most comprehensive and most diverse selection of wool based carpets in the North East of England, displaying British manufacturer based quality carpets.

TIPS FOR A CLUTTER FREE KITCHEN Professional decluttering and organising expert Cath Hindle shares her 8 top tips to get your kitchen clutter under control.
T
here is a famous William Morris quote that I return to everyday when I’m helping people to declutter: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
Apply this saying to any space that you want to organise and you won’t go far wrong but it is especially pertinent in the kitchen. Kitchens are receptacles for no end of clutter. Gadgets, electricals, old crockery, drawers of screwdrivers, old letters and bank statements, lightbulbs, blue tac and string; all of which are hidden behind cupboard doors. Cupboards are great storage but can also become easily cluttered and full if not sorted regularly which means you don’t make full use of or get the most benefit from the things you need or love.
Here’s some top tips for keeping your kitchen fully functioning and clutter free: When decluttering any room, it’s useful to think about the stuff that you use most often. So, in terms of the kitchen think utensils, pans, crockery, glasses and store the things that you use most next to the area that you use them. Mugs above the kettle, pans near the hob etc. Whilst on the subject of mugs – if you don’t want to drink

your tea out of it, get rid!! Overstuffed mug cupboards bring no joy. Lose a few chipped and ugly ones and see how you feel. By thinking about the stuff you do use (see point 1), you will automatically wheedle out the stuff you don’t. Then, separate the things you use occasionally or want to keep from the stuff you don’t. Bin, scrap or pass on the unwanted items immediately. Pass it on groups on Facebook are great for this as are some charity shops. British Heart Foundation take electrical appliances (I once had a client who got rid of 6 George Forman grills!!) Now think about how you use your kitchen. Do you entertain? How many people can you fit round the table? No point keeping a casserole dish for 12 if you never invite folks round and don’t like stew for example. As a general rule, I suggest keeping double the amount your household needs. There is four of us at Clear the Clutter HQ so we have 8 of most things (except bowls - I love bowls – see good old William Morris quote above). A good tip is use to use small baskets or take away boxes to store things like clip its, bottle openers etc. They still fit in

your drawers but allow you to group things. This also works under the kitchen sink where dishwasher tablets and tea towels can disappear forever. Use large baskets that you can pull out so you can see your washing up liquid from your oven cleaner. Speaking of Tupperware, if space allows, stack the bottoms in one drawer and the lids in the drawer above or stack the lids in an empty tub. This makes them much easier to pair up. Finally, don’t forget your food. Regularly check for out of date stuff. Don’t put new shopping in front of old stuff. That’s how you end up with lots of corned beef in the back of the cupboard. Store like with like and if possible, stack tins. If you cook with herbs and spices, use a shoe box to store the jars in and write the name on the top of each one so you can easily locate what you need.

CONCORDIA POOL REOPENS FOLLOWING REFURBISHMENT
T
he swimming pool at Concordia Leisure Centre in Cramlington has re-opened to the public following a major upgrade and refurbishment scheme.
Concordia pool has been closed for a number of weeks to allow work to be carried out to replace the old pool lining and the swimming pool floor areas in the wet changing rooms and around the children’s poolside water features. The changing cubicles have also been upgraded and new showers installed. A major piece of work has also taken place to replace the filters and pumps - which clean and heat the water - with more energy efficient and environmentally friendly equipment. Northumberland County Councillor, Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure said: “We'd like to thank all our loyal customers for their patience while the essential work was carried out. This investment means that the pool and the changing areas now have a
really fresh look and feel which we hope will be enjoyed by all those who use the facilities.” Local County Councillor, Mark Swinburn said: “I am delighted to see this investment in Concordia which has focussed on some long standing issues that residents have highlighted and I am pleased that we have been able to address their concerns.” The work forms part of a wider £1 million investment programme in Active Northumberland’s swimming pools which is being funded by Northumberland County Council. Swimming pools at Blyth Sports Centre, Prudhoe Waterworld and Wentworth Sports Centre in Hexham are having work carried out over the coming months. Similar upgrade work at Alnwick, Berwick and Rothbury pools has recently been successfully completed.

MORPETH STATION IMPROVEMENTS WELL ON TRACK
W
ork is on track to improve accessibility and create extra parking at Morpeth Railway Station.
While the station’s popularity continues to grow, with increased rail users and services, it is placing some additional pressures on parking in the surrounding area. In response, the county council is taking a number of steps to address the issues. It recently secured planning consent to create a new 26 space car park on land to the south of the station buildings, which will be in use by the end of the year. The council is in dialogue with Network Rail to secure the use of additional land alongside its existing car park to increase its capacity. Nearby, work will start in the near future on the old Goosehill School site to convert it into a public car park following the school’s relocation to Loansden in September. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “Morpeth Railway Station is a growing success story and over recent years we’ve worked hard to improve local transport provision in this area, including new cycling facilities and pedestrian crossings to help improve the links between the station and the town centre. We’ve already introduced a maximum 72 hour stay restriction in our car park at the station to help tackle the issue of people ‘garaging’ cars in the station car 60
park and prioritise the use of available spaces for daily commuters.” To meet the cost of creating extra parking capacity and to help manage demand for parking spaces, the council recently installed ticket machines in the County Council car park at the station with charging in effect from Monday 19th August. The charges will be £3 per 24 hour period, which are the same cost as those already in place at the car park operated by Northern Rail. Three monthly, six monthly and annual car park passes are also available at significantly reduced rates (£64, £108 and £195 respectively) to help make parking more affordable for regular commuters. To address issues around passengers parking in surrounding streets the council is also reviewing its existing signs to see if they can be more prominent to deter rail users from parking in nearby residential areas. The council also wants to reassure residents that it will continue to work with the local community and other key stakeholders to consider whether any extra controls are needed. Cllr Sanderson added: “The new car parking will create a great deal of extra capacity at the station and in the meantime we’ll continue to monitor the usage of the car parks and parking behaviours nearby. We’ll also increase the frequency of visits by our Civil Enforcement Officers while the new arrangements bed down.”
