Rebrand for Rejuvenated Retail Centre A Tyneside retail outlet centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary by embracing change and catering for a new generation of shoppers and leisure seekers. Royal Quays Outlet Centre in North Shields has rebranded to recognise the many small independent businesses that have moved into the centre. Now known as the Royal Quays Independent and Outlet Centre, centre manager Matt Dawson is confident that the change will encourage more retailers and a new cohort of customers looking for a fresh shopping and leisure experience. Since taking over management of the centre at the height of COVID, Matt has had to cope with forced shop closures, lower than average footfall, competition from online sales and a decline in the popularity of brandbased stores. The situation reached a critical point in October 2020 when there were 17 empty units in the centre but with careful market research, planning and thinking outside of the box, Matt has reduced this to just four empty units and footfall has risen considerably. 8

“Retail has been battered in the past year and we have anticipated, embraced, and supported the many new businesses here. We're not going to see large brands expand soon and it's not easy to just pull in any large store especially as online sales have decimated many high street household names, “said Matt. “We've rebranded because the expectations of people when they see Royal Quays Outlet is that it’s just an Outlet with lots of designer brands at outlet prices. We want to highlight the changes we’ve made and lead the way in showing our support to the many businesses we have here, both outlet and independent. Our hybrid model is constantly adapting, and we are proud of what we have done to make the retail future bright again.” Indeed, many new, local independent businesses have moved into the centre including Garden World, Hauticulture and Quay Furniture. Steven Ward from
Hauticulture is one of the business owners who have moved into Royal Quays Outlet and Independent Centre. “We welcome the change of name at Royal Quays as we feel it better reflects the new and exciting direction Matt is taking the centre. Customers continually tell us how positive the atmosphere is now and how much of an improvement it is to see so many small local independents within the centre, offering something different that you just can’t get elsewhere.” With additional transport links created and a new vibrant feel to the centre, Matt is optimistic that Royal Quays is gearing up to face the next 25 years with confidence and a new vision for what the next generation of shopper expects. “We are already seeing a huge difference in the centre and things are moving at a lot faster pace than even I had planned. We have embraced fantastic local independents who have integrated with our established branded outlet stores and added unique leisure and hospitality to compliment them to create a visitor destination rather than just a visit to the shops, “said Matt.

Hepscott Park Garden Café reopens The Garden Café at Hepscott Park is open for business once more and has a warm welcome waiting for all its customers. The Café, which is part of Northumberland County Council’s Hepscott Park Horticultural Skills Unit for people with disabilities, offers a wide range of home cooked food to eat in or take away. The menus change regularly to reflect seasonal ingredients, most of which come straight from the Unit’s gardens, or are grown or sourced locally. Their breakfast offerings, including bacon, sausage and egg baps are available from 9.30- 11.30, whilst the main menu has offerings including baked potatoes, sandwiches, toasties, cakes and bakes and a good range of drinks. The café also offers a range of crafts, including jewellery, prints and kitchen and garden goods, made by Northumbrian crafts-people and artisans. The café is open Tuesday to Friday from 9.30am to 3pm, and Saturdays from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Manager Clive Moon said: “The Garden Cafe had to close in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Cafe staff have been working hard over the last couple of months to prepare the Cafe for re-opening. We are enjoying welcoming all
our customers back and would like to thank them for their patience and understanding. “There will be a simplified menu to begin with, and some temporary changes to our opening hours. The Cafe will be closed on Sundays and Mondays and will open half an hour later and close half an hour earlier to give time for thorough sanitising.” Northumberland County Council’s Horticultural Skills Unit offer people who have disabilities a safe, relaxing environment in which to work, make friends, enjoy themselves and be themselves without discrimination. The Council also runs a number of day services across the county, helping more than 170 adults with learning disabilities to acquire new skills. These include learning to grow plants, make jewellery, ceramics, cakes and reclaim/ sell old furniture. Products are marketed as ‘Made in Northumberland’, with any money made reinvested in this service. County Councillor Wendy Pattison, “Our centres provide vulnerable adults with a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and develop confidence and self-esteem while preparing them for future employment or voluntary work. Wherever possible, activities are delivered in the local community, making it easier for people to attend on a regular basis. Our aim is to maximise each person’s individual potential and to enhance their quality of life.” To find out more about the Garden Café at Hepscott Park and view the menus visit www.hepscottparkgardencafe.co.uk

ADVERTISING FEATURE
Dog Cuddles are the Ultimate Escape from Digital Dependency Distract yourself from digital services with a four legged friend Initially the internet was perceived as an amazing escape from the humdrum of everyday life but, after years of technological revolution, and recent spells living under lockdown, people are questioning their online habit and looking for real life solutions to escape digital dependency. Cuddling and caring for a friendly dog could be the perfect solution to distract us from digital devices, suggest local dog lovers from Barking Mad Northumberland. In media regulator Ofcom’s Online Nation report in June 2021, a decade of digital dependency was highlighted. With the UK in some form of lockdown for most of 2020, we were more dependent than ever on online services for entertainment, shopping, keeping in touch, getting information, home working and home schooling. By the end of the year, about 94% of UK homes had internet access, and we spent more time online: an average of 3 hours 37 minutes a day on smartphones, tablets and computers as well as an average of 1 hour 21 minutes a day watching online services such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer on television sets. These statistics highlight some of the more negative effects that spending too much time online can have on significant numbers of people.
The report said that some people feel that ‘they are always at work’ while 54% of people surveyed admitted that ‘connected devices interrupt face to face conversations with friends and family.’ Understandably, at Christmas, we spend more time indoors with family and friends, with television schedules aimed at family viewing, Christmas specials for old favourites, and binge watching box sets or the latest series. Furthermore, the newest games console and the latest computer games, leads to our family members spending more time spent online. As we move into the New Year,
and our minds turn to resolutions and starting 2022 with renewed energy and motivation, what will your New Year resolutions include? If it is fresh air, exercise and getting out and about more, perhaps Barking Mad Northumberland can help. Dogs have been proven to encourage us to exercise, get out and about more and generally improve our well-being. After all, who can resist those puppy dog eyes pleading for a walk? This has been documented by Deborah L. Wells of the School of Psychology, Queens University, Belfast, in ‘The Effects of Animals on Human Health and WellBeing’ which concluded: “This particular companion animal can contribute to a significant degree to our well-being and quality of lives, and supports the widely held belief that pets are good for us”. Barbara Frater and Caroline Bradshaw of Barking Mad Northumberland enthuse, “We are currently seeking more doggy holiday hosts based in Northumberland to care and provide a home from home stay for friendly, well mannered dogs whose owners are away on holiday or business. This is an ideal opportunity for retired people, home workers, families, or teaching professionals, to experience the joy and life enhancing benefits of canine companionship, at a time to suit them. Our hosts also benefit from being part of our host community, we organise regular host get-togethers such as beach walks, coffee mornings, cinema trips and being part of our Barking Mad hosting community leads to meeting like minded people, with a love of all things canine. Kick starting the New Year with a healthy new hobby might be just what you are looking for. As well as cuddling and caring for a lovely dog, a canine visitor provides real interaction and exercise. We witness families’ leisure time being transformed by visiting dogs. The dogs arrive with all their own food, bedding, toys and treats, with all insurance and administration taken care of by ourselves. There is no need to provide anything other than your time and affection and a loving home environment. If you are real dog lovers and have a dog friendly home, and some free time, we would love to hear from you!”
To find out more about becoming a Barking Mad doggy holiday host, you can call Barbara and Caroline on 01665 575981, email northumberland@barkingmad.uk.com or visit www.barkingmad.uk.com/become-a-dog-sitter 12

IT’S GREAT TO BE SINGING AT CHRISTMAS! When the gentlemen of Ashington & District Male Voice first met after 18 months of lockdown, there was naturally concern about how they could start singing again and also about how many of the members would be back. Both of these potential worries have been overcome. There were members who, for a number of reasons, were unable to start again but right from the restart new members were welcomed and so far there have been five who have all blended in well with the gents and three of these did not have previous experience. Hopefully there will be more in the new year. The Musical Director, Neil Morton, assisted by accompanist Derek Brett, very quickly got everyone going again by using some of the well known songs but then turned to the Christmas repertoire being determined that the choir would be ready for a concert relaunch in December. It’s turned out that there are now three Christmas Concerts in December, ADMVC’s Christmas Concert In St. Cuthbert’s Church Bedlington on 11th December was completely sold out by bonfire night, a tremendous response from our supporters and friends. Rehearsals have gone well and the gents, along with the special guest, Susan Robertson, are looking forward to a most enjoyable afternoon. The first of the concerts is
on 4th December and is at 4.00pm in Pegswood Welfare whilst the Christmas season finishes on Sunday 19th December with a concert in Kirkwhelpington at 3.00pm. A short Christmas break and the gents will then begin to look at their programs for the new year. As a community choir we welcome the opportunity to help voluntary and charitable organisations by being available for concerts. There has to be a concert fee to cover expenses but generally organisations who attract a good audience can raise considerable funds. Just check us out on www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org. Ashington & District Male Voice Choir wishes everyone a most enjoyable festive season followed by a Happy & Healthy New Year!

FANCY A BREAK? Right now we all need something to look forward to, and a UK coach break could be just the ticket! Local coach tourism experts Graham Wright and John Hindhaugh have started their own coach tour company and are taking bookings now. Graham explains more...
J
ohn and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always

Redcastle Hotel, Co. Donegal enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow everyone to make full use of the facilities of the chosen hotel. Guaranteed free time as well as entertainment are also key factors that we take into account to try and make a tour as pleasurable an experience possible. In such a short space of time, from the initial concept, we have managed to make massive progress. During this current difficult time we all need something to look forward to, and we currently have a wide range of fantastic tours in Great Britain. Our advert on the opposite page shows you what’s on offer, with more to follow! You can rest assured that you can book with confidence with us. RECIPE
Linzertorte Cookies Linzertorte cookies, originating from Linz in Austria, are traditional European Christmas pastries. The combination of spices has a very distinctive and delicious taste.
INGREDIENTS
200g plain flour 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 125g unsalted butter, at room temperature 180g golden caster sugar zest of 1⁄2 a lemon zest of 1⁄2 an orange 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract raspberry jam (approx. 15 small teaspoons)
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C (fan)/gas mark 4. Lightly grease 2 or 3 baking trays and line with parchment paper. 2. Sift all the dry ingredients (except the caster sugar) together into a bowl and set aside.
3. Cream the butter, sugar and zests together for 1–2 minutes, until light and fluffy. 4. Add the egg and vanilla extract and beat until combined. Add the sifted dry ingredients and beat on a low speed until the mixture forms a soft dough. 5. Wrap in cling film and rest in the fridge for 15–20 minutes. 6. Place the dough on a flat surface lightly dusted with plain flour. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to approximately 3mm in thickness. 7. Using a cookie cutter such as a heart, star or circle, cut out an even number of cookies. On every second cookie, using a smaller cookie cutter of the same shape, cut out a piece from the middle. 8. Put them carefully on to the lined baking trays, ensuring they are at least 2cm apart. 9. Bake until the edges turn golden brown or they are firm to touch in the middle. This will be approximately 8–10 minutes. 10. Let the cookies cool completely before sandwiching them together with raspberry jam.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 20

COULD 2022 BE THE YEAR YOU STOP SMOKING?
JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, EXPLAINS THE IMPACT OF SMOKING ON YOUR MOUTH HEALTH
The new year could be the time for a fresh start to improve your health and wellbeing. If you are a smoker, why not choose 2022 as the time to quit? Here at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we always discuss with our patients the benefit of stopping smoking. If you are worried or feel you won't be able to manage it alone, there is a Smoking Cessation Service in Northumberland where you will receive all the help and support you need. The first step of picking up the phone is usually the hardest. Call 01670 813135. You can call them yourself for an initial chat without the need of a referral from your doctor, dentist or any other health care professional. If you want their help to stop smoking just make the phone call yourself! Did you know the success rate for quitting smoking is much greater when you are supported by a
cessation service rather than doing it alone? I’m sure those of you that smoke are now rolling your eyes and feeling thoroughly picked on. I do appreciate some of you enjoy smoking and actually do not want to give up; you are already aware of the risk of heart and lung disease, diabetes and increased cancer risks. Sometimes however it is the smaller things that irritate people the most. Have you thought about the effects on your mouth when you light up? Putting the cigarette, cigar or pipe between your lips and breathing the smoke past your teeth, gums, tongue and all the other surfaces of your mouth and throat has a massive impact before reaching everywhere else in your body. There are also similar damaging affects if you are in the habit of chewing tobacco. Perhaps knowing the impact on your mouth may help your decision in choosing to quit for yourself. Turn over for some examples... ☞ ABC MAGAZINES

“
Smokers are 3 times more likely to develop cancer in the mouth than non- smokers.
STAINED AND DISCOLOURED TEETH
This really does irritate most smokers. Brown and yellow staining due to nicotine and tar is unsightly. Because it is visible it usually affects smokers more than worrying about the potential of future lifethreatening smoking- related diseases. Let's be honest, everyone (including me) would love to have nicer, whiter looking teeth. This could be a great reason to stop as most of the stains caused by smoking can be removed with simple cleaning methods used by your dentist or hygienist. We do not recommend regular use of smokers toothpaste as these can be very abrasive and cause damage to the surfaces of your teeth. For patients whom have their teeth bleached (which should only be performed with a dental professional), we also advise to abstain from smoking as this will hinder the whitening effect and could be a waste of your time and money. Smokers also get more tartar, or calculus, build up on their teeth which is also unsightly and makes teeth much more difficult to keep clean. These deposits are stuck hard onto your teeth and will need to be professionally cleaned off by your dental professional.
BAD BREATH
I'm sure all of us know an ex-smoker whom since quitting has become really aware of the smell that smoking causes to clothes, hair, homes and cars. I'm afraid the smell of smoke is not something any of us could describe as pleasant or fragrant! Well, smoking can also cause halitosis or bad breath. I have to say as a dentist most people are mortified if they have had an Indian or Italian meal heavily laced with garlic
24

ABC MAGAZINES
the night before their appointment. Their concern about the smell of their breath does distress them. (I do reassure my patients the smell of garlic does not bother me at all.) Stopping smoking will help reduce the risk of bad breath.
BLACK HAIRY TONGUE
Well, this does sound very unusual but unfortunately this condition looks exactly as its name suggests. This condition is when the tiny fibres, called papillae, on the surface of your tongue become longer and discolour to give the appearance of brown or black hairs on it. People whom have this condition are usually heavy smokers. Although not the prettiest looking, black hairy tongue is benign, there are no symptoms associated and no treatment is needed.
GUM DISEASE
Gum disease is the most common reason why adults loose teeth. Missing teeth can have a really negative impact on anyone as it can affect appearance, the ability to eat properly and our general feeling of well- being, plus there may be the additional cost and time of dental treatment needed to replace them. There is a very definite link between smoking and gum disease. Smoking reduces the success of any treatment you may receive for gum disease. It is a definite fact that smokers do loose more teeth due to gum disease than non- smokers. Being a nonsmoker is therefore one of the best ways to improve your gum health. Smokers have more hard calculus and plaque build up on their teeth. There is also a reduced blood supply to the gums, meaning infected gums do not heal as well. A reduced blood supply to the gums
ADVERTISING FEATURE
is not healthy and could hide the fact you have gum disease for some time as your gums may not bleed. This is why it is important to visit your dentist regularly as they will screen at every check up for the presence of gum disease.
CANNOT TASTE OR SMELL FOOD AS WELL
Smoking reduces the sense of smell, which also reduces the sense of taste. Some ex-smokers report enjoying their food much more after quitting due to the better smell and taste of the food they ate. The improved smell could be why ex smokers have a heightened awareness of the smell of smoking as mentioned above.
NOT HEALING WELL AFTER EXTRACTIONS, GUM TREATMENT OR MOUTH SURGERY
Smoking reduces the ability to heal. Any wound needs a good blood supply with plenty of oxygen to repair successfully. Unfortunately smoking weakens our immune system and the ability to fight infection, but also narrows blood vessels so by reducing the nutrients and oxygen supply to a wound. The healing process can therefore be delayed. If any of you have had the misfortune to suffer from a dry socket after an extraction then I sympathise with you as you know all too well the pain associated with this problem. A dry socket is truly awful and can be as bad as severe toothache. When a tooth is taken out the hole that is left, the socket, fills with a blood clot. If this blood clot comes out too soon the bone can become exposed and inflamed. It is this inflammation of the bone, osteitis, that is a dry socket, and my goodness it is truly horrible! Anyone can suffer from a dry socket, however it is more common in smokers due to the reduced blood supply and healing of the area, but with the addition of the smoking action, "dragging" can help dislodge the blood clot from the socket. It is normal to be told to abstain from smoking after you have a tooth extracted to try to reduce the risk of this truly awful condition.
REDUCED SUCCESS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and involves surgery to place a tita nium implant into the jaw bone, then it is usual to allow a period of time (months) for the bone to fuse and integrate with the implant. The false tooth or teeth are then placed on the top of the implant. There is a need for any patient who wants an implant to be committed to surgery, maintaining good oral hygiene and maintenance of the implant, and be prepared to meet the financial implication associated, (costs are in the thousands). I think there is a common misconception that when implants are placed, that's it, you don't need to do anything with them for life. This simply is not the case as they need continuous maintenance and good care, without which they can fail. There is an increased risk
of implant failure in smokers due to the reduction in the ability to heal after surgery but also the increased risk of gum problems around the implant, in particular peri-implantitis. This is a destructive inflammatory process that affects the gum and bone around an implant and can lead to it loosening and having to be removed. If any smokers are thinking about dental implants, then certainly quitting is advisable before you commit to such a lot of extensive and invasive dental work with the significant costs associated.
ORAL CANCER
Sorry, it would be neglectful of me not to mention the C word. I will keep it short. A few simple facts for you : • Smokers are 3 times more likely to develop cancer in the mouth than non- smokers. • Mouth cancer is becoming more common in the UK, however it is reported that approximately 9 out of 10 cases could be prevented with lifestyle changes. • Smoking, chewing betel nut or tobacco all increases your risk of mouth cancer.
E-CIGARETTES
I know many people now use e cigarettes as an alternative, and have in fact used them to quit smoking, however as these are a relatively new concept and with a lack of research, the long term effects of their use is unknown. I would always advise you to seek advice from your local smoking cessation team or doctor to discuss all the smoking cessation products available to you . Having read through this piece numerous times, I do feel terrible as it is quite hard hitting about the negative effects of smoking in the mouth, but it is a true representation of the facts. If you are a smoker, are aware of all the facts, (and not just the ones mentioned here), and accept the risks associated and still choose to smoke, then absolutely I agree you should not be nagged repeatedly about quitting. It is my opinion that giving up is something you must decide and want for yourself and not just to please others. After all this is an addiction and giving up will be hard, but there is help out there if you need it.

FILM REVIEWS CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG
SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
Genres: Action, Science Fiction, Age Rating: TBC Release date: 15th December
Genres: Action, Adventure, Animated Age Rating: PG Release date: 10th December
'Clifford The Big Red Dog' from the 1960's children book series written by author and cartoonist Norman Bridwell, becomes real in this movie adaptation. The story follows middle schooler Emily Elizabeth, who meets an animal rescuer when struggling to fit in at school. To cheer her up, the unnamed man gives her a small red puppy. They quickly become best friends, but much to her surprise, Clifford turns into a giant ten-foot-tall hound overnight. This is where the movie differs from the original book. Clifford’s precise height has never been explicitly stated before, leaving it up to the readers’ imagination. Unfortunately, his massive size attracts the attention of an evil genetics company that wants to create supersized animals. While this movie might be a great treat for the family, it is not without its flaws. The CGI interpretation of Clifford was met with criticism. Unlike in the books, Clifford in the movie version looks like a giant Labrador retriever dyed with food colouring. However, ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ puts an extraordinary spin on an overused plot. At first glance, Emily’s adventure with her larger-than-life dog seems dull, but their solid friendship is what makes the movie touchingly sweet and full of delight. Despite the traditional story structure, there is an air of acceptance and unconditional love between Emily and Clifford.
Tom Holland returns to the big screen as Marvel’s one and only Peter Parker in the franchise continuation. Peter Parker is finding the true meaning of being a superhero. After his identity as the friendly neighbourhood hero was revealed to the public by Mysterio in the previous instalment, the young Avenger turns to Dr. Strange to restore the secret with magic. A multiverse will emerge in the story, including the appearance of other Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Directed by Jon Watts, Tom Holland reprises his role with his real-life girlfriend Zendaya as his on-screen darling, MJ. Other cast members are Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, and Benedict Wong.
THE KING’S MAN
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy Age Rating: 18 Release date: 22nd December
'The King's Man' is a prequel to the 2014's 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' and the 2017's 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle'. Matthew Vaughn returns to the set to direct the third instalment of the much-loved franchise. This time, the plot goes back into the past. The setting is World
War I, and the story reveals the origin of Kingsman’s first-ever mission as an independent intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion. Led by Orlando, The Duke of Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), the newlyformed team of skilled agents tries to stop international criminal masterminds that are plotting to wipe out the world. Among the teams are Polly (Gemma Arterton), Shola (Djimon Honsou), and Conrad (Harris Dickinson). On the enemy side, other real-life-inspired criminals, such as Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), are represented in the movie. The audience will see how the Kingsman’ tagline, “manners maketh man,” preserved through the generations, was truly created.
NIGHTMARE ALLEY
Genres: Drama, Thriller Age Rating: tbc Release date: January 2022
Bradley Cooper is Stan Carlisle, an ambitious man who works for a travelling carnival in ‘Nightmare Alley’. Having a way with words and a talent for manipulating people, the confident man tries to hook up with Dr Lilith Ritter, a female psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett. Little does he know that she is far more manipulative than he'll ever be. Alongside these two high ranking Hollywood actors, the carnival crew is also full of popular names. Rooney Mara plays Molly, Willem Dafoe plays Clem and Ron Perlman is Bruno the Strongman. The film is based on a 1946 novel with the same title by author William Lindsay Grisham. Horror and thriller movie fans should be familiar with director Guillermo Del Toro's other scary works ‘Blade’, ‘Hellboy’, ‘Pan's Labyrinth’, and, most recently, ‘The Shape of Water’. As such, this movie should be an easy favourite for horror movie buffs.

5. 6.
Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the fruit to plump up. Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a mini food processor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin. Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until pale and fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and any whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries. Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾ hours (this depends very much on your oven. A fan oven will be very quick). If you’re unsure I recommend you check after an hour then every fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm and golden brown. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked. You can cover it loosely with foil after 1 hour if the centre needs more time. This prevents the surface darkening too much. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, and then remove to a wire rack to cool. Remove a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard. Cut the cake in half to make 2 rectangles. Top with marzipan and white fondant icing and decorate with a sprig of holly.

PROMOTION
Create an Eco-Friendly Wreath
Lanterns all from Dobbies.
Bring the outdoors in, quite literally, with this wild and wonderful wreath, which will add a natural flair to your Christmas décor this season. With no metal or plastic required, flora and fauna can be foraged from the garden, including earthy greens like Conifers and Pine, while dried flowers are perfect for adding pops of colour. Dobbies Lead Stylist, Rebecca Stanton, commented: “We know our customers love being outdoors and, in their gardens, so creating your own eco wreath is perfect for our green fingered friends. Rustic wreaths can be hung on front doors or indoors and add a modern, fuss-free festive feel.” Rebecca explains how to create your eco wreath: YOU WILL NEED: Twine Scissors Twigs Cut/Foraged greenery STEP 1: Get the look by gathering twigs together and moulding into a rough hoop shape. Don’t worry, this doesn’t have to be perfect. Secure as you go with the twine. STEP 2: Time to get creative by using the greenery to make little individual posies and secure with twine. This is where you can inject pops of colour with flowers – fresh or dried. STEP 3: Place each posey on the hoop, securing each one with twine. Layer the next one on top of the last, to hide where you have tied. STEP 4: Once you have taken the posies as far round as you would like, stop. It’s nice to leave some of the hoop exposed for a rustic feel. STEP 5: Hang your wild eco wreath and prepare for compliments as you wow your festive guests. 36

SIMPLE WINTER TASKS
By Rachael Leverton
There are always things to do out in the garden, even in December. A few simple gardening tasks offer some pockets of calm and relief amid the busyness of the festive season. They are also a wonderful way to get some fresh air and exercise to burn off those Christmas calories and winter gloominess! First, take a look at your winter containers. If you have a particularly wet spell, make sure they don’t get flooded. If it's dry, then plants will still need water regularly, just give the compost a chance to dry out each time. Pick off any leaves that look yellowed or diseased. Do you like garlic? Now is the perfect time to start your own garlic crop, especially if like mine your soil is free-draining. Plant individual cloves of garlic. ‘Solent Wight’ is a great variety for our greyer British climate and forms large plump bulbs. If you have a sheltered warmer spot try ‘Lautrec Wight,’ which as its name suggests originates from the town of Lautrec in France. It produces particularly handsome pink/purple cloves and is widely regarded in France as the best garlic. Snip off any wispy ends or the birds will pull cloves from the soil). The bulbs will be ready to harvest when the leaves start to die off and turn yellow, which is usually around June or July. Tidy established perennials by cutting back those that have become pulpy. Simply cut back the decaying material, chop it up and add it to the compost heap. If you have an unheated greenhouse, a summer house or conservatory you can sow some sweet peas and leave them to germinate. Sow the seeds in deep pots or root-trainers filled with multi-purpose compost then keep the pots in a propagator or cover them with a transparent plastic bag. Once seeds have germinated, remove the covering. If the soil isn’t frozen, you can plant bare-root fruit bushes such as gooseberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Make sure you dig a hole that can take the plant's roots comfortably without squashing them. Then label them clearly because it’s easy to forget which varieties you're growing! Finally, if you're looking for the perfect gift for the gardener in your life please can I recommend Gold Leaf Winter Touch gloves. They have a Thinsulate™ thermal lining which keeps hands toasty warm even in the coldest weather, AND an additional Ski-Dri™ waterproof, breathable lining so your hands remain dry even when used in the wet! I love mine, and I am neither sponsored by nor connected with the company in any way; mine were a recent gift and I've been raving about them to anyone who will listen ever since! Happy Gardening,

ENJOY YOUR CONSERVATORY THIS WINTER
If you’re fed up with your conservatory being freezing cold and unusable during the winter then Thermos Roof explain how they have the answer...
C
onservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, firstly to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory and, during the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round, because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory

construction. The materials we use are lightweight, therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly
dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and we guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give us a call today on 01670 828 695 to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory! ■ www.thermosroof.co.uk

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TIPS W How to stay safe when buying online ith hundreds of local independent retailers in Northumberland, we’re sure you’ll be able to find everything you need and more for the festive season. We always recommend buying locally wherever possible, either in local shops or through their websites, to look after our small businesses and protect local jobs. If you are shopping online from businesses you don’t know, follow these simple tips from the Trading Standards team, which is part of Northumberland County Councils’ Public Protection Service, to help you stay safe and ensure your hard-earned cash doesn’t end up in the pocket of some scamster.
1
MAKE SURE THE WEBSITE IS GENUINE Some scammers are very good at designing websites to look like well-known brands and can fool the unwary. The best way to make sure you are shopping on the genuine website is to type in the address yourself rather than clicking on a link.
2
CHECK THEIR REPUTATION If you are unfamiliar with the retailer, it is wise to do an online search to check reviews and feedback from other customers to gauge their reputation.
3
LOOK FOR CONTACT DETAILS. Check that a physical UK address and contact telephone number is provided for the trader prior to making the purchase. Be aware that a co.uk web address does not necessarily mean the trader is based in this country. If things go wrong, it may be hard for you, or the authorities, to take action against an overseas trader, or a trader that cannot be found!
4
CHECK THE REFUND & RETURNS POLICY BEFORE YOU ORDER This should be available on the website. You have a right to a cooling off period when you buy online. Make sure that the trader provides details of your right to cancel and the procedure for returning your order. They should state that: - You have at least 14 days starting the day after delivery to inform them of your wish to cancel. - You have a further 14 days in which to return the goods. 40
|
ABC MAGAZINES
- You are entitled to a refund of any standard delivery charge as well as the cost of the goods. Bear in mind that traders can specify that you are responsible for paying the cost of any return. You should think about this carefully if goods you order are particularly heavy.
be responsible for a refund if things go wrong.
8
GUARD YOUR PRIVACY. Do not disclose personal information unless you know who is receiving it, why they need it.
5
9
6
10
KEEP YOUR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE UP TO DATE. The latest versions of web browsers help block spoof websites. Switch on the ‘automatic updates’ setting so your protection is kept up-to-date.
ENSURE THE CHECKOUT IS SECURE. At the online check-out, before you type in your credit card details, make sure the web address bar has switched from ‘http:’ to ‘https:’ to indicate a secure, encrypted connection. Any legitimate online site processing payments always switch to a secure connection at this stage. Look out too for the padlock symbol inf the browser window to show that it is a secure connection.
7
SHOP SECURELY If you are buying goods valued at over £100, consider using a credit card as if things go wrong, you can request a refund directly from your card provider. If you pay by debit card, your card provider may offer a chargeback facility if goods are not delivered or are faulty. But this is not required by law and may be strictly time limited. PayPal may also offer some protection but again this is not a legal requirement and will be subject to their terms and conditions. Avoid paying by bank transfer, as the bank will not
KEEP A RECORD OF YOUR TRANSACTIONS. Set up a folder where you can store all your transaction history. It’s also helpful to take a screenshot of how the goods have been described at the time of ordering. This way, if there is ever a dispute you have the information.
THINK TWICE, CLICK ONCE As the Christmas deal offers start stacking up in your inbox, it’s easy to forget that not all emails bring festive cheer. Most hacks start by convincing you to open an attachment or visit a link to download something. It’s an easy way for bad folk to install malware on your machine. Emails that can at first glance look to be from a known retailer, may be a scam. Think twice, click once. If something is unexpected don’t trust it – delete it. Northumberland County Councillor Colin Horncastle, said: “Covid has changed the way many of us shop and the internet can be a convenient way of buying the things we need. Try and buy from a local online retailer if you can, to support our Northumberland small businesses with your custom. It may be more important to them this year than ever before.” To find out more about shopping local go to www.discoverourland.co.uk/ shoplocal

BOOKS
A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
Christmas is a wonderful time to curl up with a book. The shelves are full of this year’s new and shiny celebrity offerings. But Christmas is surely a time for nostalgia. So, pour yourself a glass of eggnog or mulled wine and let’s visit Christmas Past…
FOR GROWN-UPS
FOR KIDS
For a real nostalgia-fest and a lyrical description of times gone by, when ‘December was as white as Lapland though there were no reindeers’? dig out ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ by Dylan Thomas, preferably with Edward Ardizzone’s illustrations. Short, simple, and beautiful, it sums up Christmas with the Uncles, snow on the ground and the myriad delights for a small boy on the best day of the year. If, however, you are feeling slightly less full of cheer and goodwill, Jilly Cooper might be more to your taste. The Christmas scene in ‘Appassionata’ is one of my favourite depictions of the holiday, and every December I find myself turning first to ‘How to Survive Christmas’ – bleak, witty and sometimes crushingly accurate, it is Cooper’s account of how to get through a typical festive season. Another excellent book with a brief but memorable Christmas sequence, is ‘Angels and Men’ by Catherine Fox. It is hard to get hold of, but I promise you, Mara’s Christmas with her grandmother is not one you will forget – and the rest of the book is beautifully written, too. Finally, from the realms of fantasy, why not try Christmas Discworld style in ‘Hogfather’ by Terry Pratchett? Was there ever a writer with a sharper wit? As you might expect, his Santa is quite different – for a start, those are pigs, not reindeer pulling his sleigh. And he seems a little on the bony side. What does Death have to do with Christmas? More than you might think....
For many people, ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs is their Christmas classic of choice. I actually prefer his ‘Father Christmas.’ Less saccharine and eloquently told with pictures and few words, it follows a curmudgeonly Santa on his journey around the globe, dropping off presents, struggling down chimneys, trudging upstairs, through all kinds of weather...Merry Bloomin’ Christmas! Another favourite is ‘Dear Father Christmas’ by Jeanne Willis and Rosie Reeve. This picture book follows Mary as she writes her Christmas letter. Her wishes are different, as she doesn’t need any more toys – but an everlasting hamster and self-tying shoelaces would come in rather handy. Of course, there is a twist in the tale, but we don’t see it coming, and my kids read it over and over again – even at the height of summer. If you like the Jolly Postman, then you will love ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. As you might expect, there are a range of letters to open, with cards, games and even a jigsaw puzzle for the lucky nursery rhyme characters on his rounds. An absolute delight.

AND FINALLY... How could we look at Christmas without mentioning the two biggest Christmas classics ever? I mean of course, ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens and ‘The Night Before Christmas’ by Clement C Moore. I know you have seen a million and one adaptations of the
former (The Muppets do it best!), but the book really is worth a read. Be honest, when else are you going to curl up by the fire with a Dickens novel if not during a long snowy holiday? Try it. As for the former, we read it aloud every Christmas Eve, just before the lights go out. I stole this tradition from a friend, and I am passing it on to you. Merry Christmas!
