NORTHUMBERLAND LINE UPDATE

The Northumberland Line will bring passenger trains back into service between Ashington and Newcastle. It will provide new stations between Ashington and Newcastle Central Station, taking 35 minutes, and with no need to change trains. Alternatively, you can switch from the Northumberland Line at Northumberland Park to Tyne and Wear Metro for onward journeys to the Airport, Tynemouth and South Shields.

The freight trains that currently use the railway will still be able to do so, helping support the economic aspirations of both Lynemouth Power Station and the Port of Blyth.

With summer 2024 being the target date for trains to be running, here is an update as to what is happening at each station….

Northumberland Park

Northumberland Park will be the first stop for trains travelling from Newcastle. Preparation for mining remediation works, which will ensure the voids left by historic mining are completely filled in, are due to start in May 2023. This work is expected to take between three and six months to complete. Construction of the new station will start once the mining remediation has been completed.

Seaton Delaval

Seaton Delaval will be the second stop for trains travelling from Newcastle. Station construction is due to restart in late spring this year. In preparation for this, precast concrete units will soon be delivered to the site. To the north of Seaton Delaval, works to upgrade the level crossing in New Hartley are continuing.

Newsham

Newsham will be the third stop for trains travelling from Newcastle and construction of the station and platform are underway.

Works will also soon be starting on the construction of the footbridge, which will allow passengers to transfer between the platforms at the new station. North of Newsham Station, works to upgrade the signalling at Plessey Road Level Crossing are continuing.

Blyth Bebside

Blyth Bebside will be the fourth stop for trains travelling from Newcastle and construction of the station is due to start later in 2023. Ground investigations are ongoing to confirm if any works are needed to fill in former mine workings and to make

the ground stable before station construction starts.

Bedlington

Bedlington will be the fifth stop for trains travelling from Newcastle and works to enable the station’s construction began in early May. Early works will include clearing vegetation from land at Park Terrace, establishing a site compound and demolishing the existing platform.

Works to upgrade the level crossings to the north and south of the station site have begun and are ongoing. Works to bring the disused railway sidings at Furnace Way, to the south of Bedlington, are also progressing well, with new tracks now installed. Construction works for a new maintenance yard have also recently started.

Ashington

Ashington will be the final stop for trains travelling from Newcastle. Station construction started last year and recently the focus has been on the creation of a new car park area. Works to upgrade the track and signalling into the station are also progressing well.

MORPETH FAIR RETURNS, BIGGER THAN EVER!

June sees the return of Morpeth Fair, and once again promises a weekend of fun, excitement and adventure for all the family.

This year's event will take over the town on June 10th and 11th, culminating with the much-loved Morpeth Fair Day on the Sunday.

After attracting over 30,000 visitors to the event each year, organisers have extended the Fair Day celebrations across the whole weekend, meaning even more live music, food and drink outlets and children's entertainment than ever before.

Saturday will see Brass Does Rock partying in the park, with a number of brass bands performing hits from across the decades, and a mini food and drink festival held on the Market Square. Various venues in Morpeth will also have live music and will be offering Fair Weekend specials.

The main event on Sunday will kick off with a free

Junior fun run. The run will take place in the morning and is supported by Morpeth Harriers, with all participants receiving a free goodie bag at the end of the race. This will then be followed by the ever popular vintage car and motorbike procession at midday cruising through the streets of Morpeth, from the Railway Station to the Stanners.

Bridge Street will be lined with a range of different traders, selling everything from sweet treats to stunning handmade gifts. For all you foodies out there, make sure you head down to Oldgate, just past the clock tower, where there will be a food quarter showcasing a variety of delicious treats from local traders. You’ll be able to sample a wide variety of dishes from a diverse selection of local food outlets.

There are even more activities down The Stanners, where you'll find a range of entertainment including pony rides, vintage cars, Harley Bikes and an army climbing wall.

Finally, the main stage at the top of Bridge Street will see local bands including Andy Rayner Band, Work in Progress and The Understudies playing throughout the day. You can even grab a glass of fizz from the prosecco bar, then sit back and enjoy listening to some of the region’s top music talents.

This year's Morpeth Fair once again promises to be an incredible event, so gather your friends and family and head down for what is sure to be a weekend of fun, laughter and excitement.

GOING WILD

Wildflowers are a great addition to any garden, as they can add texture, variety, and interest. Not only are they beautiful, but they also have many environmental benefits.

They attract pollinators: Wildflowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden. These pollinators play a vital role in the garden ecosystem by pollinating crops, fruits, and vegetables.

Biodiversity: All these pollinators promote biodiversity by providing habitat and food for a variety of other insects, birds and animals.

They improve soil health: When they die off, wildflowers can be dug into the soil to promote better structure and add organic matter. They can also help prevent erosion by wind and rain.

In addition, wildflowers are low-maintenance, this is very important if you have a busy job with little time to garden, but still want a pretty outdoor space.

For best results select an area with plenty of sunlight. Find a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.

You can introduce wildflowers in a range of areas from a section of your garden, to raised beds, window boxes to plant pots.

Wildflowers prefer well-drained soil, so if your garden soil is heavy clay or you may need to improve the structure by digging in grit and organic matter.

There are so many different varieties of wildflowers. You can customise the colours to your personal taste. Look on the seed

packets and consider the bloom time, colour, and height of the flowers. Avoid invasive species or plants that may not be appropriate for your garden.

Remove any existing grass or weeds from your chosen area and loosen the soil with a garden fork. Rake it over to create a smooth flat surface, and then lightly compact the soil with a roller or your feet.

When it comes to sowing you can either broadcast the seeds over the entire planting area or plant them in rows. Seeing the area you’ve already covered is easier if you mix the seeds with sand or vermiculite before sowing. Once you have sown the seeds, gently rake the surface to cover them with a thin layer of soil.

Water the area thoroughly to help the seeds settle into the soil. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, which should take 1 to 3 weeks depending on the varieties of wildflowers you’ve selected. Once the seeds have sprouted, water as required and pull out any weeds that pop up.

I absolutely love wildflowers. There is something wonderfully spontaneous about them, and the best thing about them is that anyone, keen gardener or total beginner can enjoy them.

Most colorful wildflowers include:

· Cornflowers

Corn marigolds

Field poppies

Ox-eye daisies

Red campion

· Scarlet pimpernel

Best wildflowers for bees include:

Bee balm

Borage

Clover

Lavender

Milkweed

· Yarrow

Some of the wildflowers that improve soil health include:

Clover

Dandelions

Plantain

· Wild thyme

CHOIR CHARITY CONCERT IN AID OF UKRAINE

Following a highly successful Annual Concert, and marking the King’s Coronation, the Ashington and District Male Voice Choir (ADMVC) now move on to preparing for a Charity Concert to raise funds for humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

The concert on June 10th at Bomarsund Welfare at 7.00 pm will provide an evening of entertainment with a licensed bar for refreshments and a prize raffle. Tickets are £5 and all proceeds are to be donated to the DEC Ukraine Fund. The Choir is incredibly grateful to Bomarsund Welfare for hosting this event and the support given.

We are still actively recruiting, and would urge any prospective new members to come along to any rehearsal on Thursday evenings at 7pm in the lounge Bomarsund Welfare for a chat and a free taster session. No audition is required, and you do not need to be able to read music as one of our

experienced members will guide you throughout the evening. An interval with coffee/tea and biscuits provides the ideal opportunity for members to catch up socially and is always a popular part of rehearsals.

Communal singing really lifts your mood and the health benefits from regular singing are well publicised.

If you are interested, please visit our website www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org, find us on Facebook, or call Colin on 01670 815 534.

We look forward to hearing from you.

At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice our aim is to provide high quality dental care and treatment in a caring, relaxed, comfortable and safe environment. We aim to provide a professional service with exceptional patient care to meet your individual requirements. Here are the people that make it all happen.

DR JOANNE DUGGAN

Principal Dentist and Practice Owner

BChD, Dip con Sed

Joanne qualified from Leeds in 1995 with distinctions and undergraduate prizes in restorative dentistry, orthodontics, periodontology and research.

Joanne has the initials BChD after her name as this is specific for a degree in dentistry from Leeds University as opposed to BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) used from all other UK Universities. She enjoys all aspects of dentistry and therefore has stayed in general practice throughout her career, working as an associate, and also providing the dental service to a local prison for 9 years, before becoming practice owner and the principal dentist of Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice in June 2014, where she still continues to love dentistry.

Joanne has gained some additional post graduate qualifications throughout her career, a brief run down as follows. After being commended by the judges for her passion and enthusiasm as a finalist in the good practice awards, Joanne was invited as the only dentist to participate in a yearlong management and leadership course for health care professionals with Northumberland Care Trust. Following on from this course Joanne went on to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and

Improving Performance in Health and Social Care from the University of Teesside in 2007.

Joanne has a special interest in helping really anxious patients cope with their dental journey and gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation from Newcastle University in 2009.

She also attained a postgraduate certificate with distinction in Teaching and Learning in Professional Practice from the University of Central Lancashire in 2012. Joanne utilised this qualification becoming a foundation dentist trainer, a supervisory and mentorship role, for newly qualified dentists in general dental practice. She also delivered lectures to foundation dentists on providing sedation in general dental practice.

Joanne continues to be enthusiastic about dentistry and wants to learn and improve her skills further; she more recently completed a year long course in implant dentistry.

She strives for continuous improvement in the practice at all times and enjoys leading and supporting her fantastic team; she is proud of the practice achieving the BDA good practice accolade and for being identified as a notable practice following our CQC inspection in 2020, "where patient’s general health and well-being was at the heart of the service and staff go above and beyond to help persons who may be vulnerable due to medical, physical or social reasons." Joanne’s aim is for everyone at the practice to achieve their best, striving always to improve and continue their professional development.

Outside of work, Joanne loves sport and the outdoors.

NEW TV DRAMA TO BE FILMED IN NORTHUMBERLAND

The old Riverside Leisure Centre building in Morpeth is to be used for a temporary period by a film crew for a new TV drama while a permanent use for the building is found.

The crew will be using the centre as the base for the new TV drama, which will be filmed at various locations in Northumberland. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks.

The production team will be occupying the building, which belongs to Northumberland County Council, and will start work there in the next few weeks.

Northumberland County Councillor Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for corporate services said:

“It is great that a temporary use has been found for the building while discussions are ongoing about a permanent use for this important site. Northumberland is a unique place - full of history with dramatic coastlines and beautiful scenery so is a fantastic backdrop for filming.

“Having a production crew in the town who will use local accommodation, catering and other services will also provide a boost to the local economy.”

Northumberland has a long history of welcoming

productions of all sizes, from small independent filmmakers through to regional and national television and huge blockbuster movies.

Northumberland County Council has been exploring the future use for the old leisure centre site to find one that impacts positively on the town and best suit its needs.

The centre is situated in the Newmarket area of town, and is classed as a key opportunity site, situated in a central location within a Conservation Area, overlooking the River Wansbeck and opposite Carlisle Park.

Last year Savills estate agents were appointed to test market the site and asked for expressions of interest or proposals on what the building could potentially be used for. Some of the favoured choices for development include sports, leisure, hotel, cultural or community use.

PARANORMAL NORTHUMBERLAND

Northumberland is known for its spectacular countryside and coastline, as well as its rich history and culture. It's no surprise, then, that the county is also home to a wealth of myths, legends, and fantastical tales. In his latest book, "Illustrated Tales of Northumberland," local author Rob Kirkup brings readers a selection of these captivating stories, many of which are set in the county's many castles.

One such tale is set in the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, where a warlock commands a skeletal army to prevent Sir Guy the Seeker from rescuing a maiden in distress on a stormy night. Another legend suggests that King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table may be resting in eternal slumber beneath the Northumberland countryside, waiting to rise again in England's hour of need.

While some of the tales in the book are based on factual events, others have mystical roots, but all are nonetheless intriguing and fascinating. Kirkup, a dedicated ghost hunter from the north east, has had a lifelong fascination with the supernatural and has established himself as an expert in the field with over

50 investigations and several published books on the subject.

"Illustrated Tales of Northumberland" is the latest in Amberley's "Illustrated Tales" series and offers a unique insight into the county's rich folklore and legends. It is available in both print and digital formats, making it a great choice for residents and visitors alike, as well as those interested in heritage and visitor attractions.

Paranormal Northumberland is available to buy from 15th May from www.amberley-books.com and all good bookshops. To buy this book online while supporting your local independent bookshop, visit: uk.bookshop.org/shop/abcmagazines

MOUTH OF THE TYNE LINE UP COMPLETE

Legendary Scottish band The Proclaimers will open this year’s Mouth of the Tyne Festival, completing a star studded line up over 4 days.

The duo have added a special north east date into their summer tour, and will perform at Tynemouth Priory and Castle on Thursday 6 July.

Best known for their hits Letter from America, I’m Gonna Be (500 miles), Let’s Get Married, and King of the Road, they have enjoyed huge success around the globe with Gold and Platinum singles and albums in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The Proclaimers join post-punk legend Siouxsie on Friday 7 July, former Beautiful South and Housemartins frontman Paul Heaton on Saturday 8 July and Brit Awardwinning Gabrielle on Sunday 9 July, making this year’s line-up one of the best in the festival’s 17 year history.

Punk icon Siouxsie is an Ivor Novello award-winning musician who brings over 40 years of hits from her ground-breaking career with Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Creatures, and as a solo artist. Her show will be one of her first UK shows for a decade.

Special guests on the night are LYR, an ambient rock band comprising of author and current British poet laureate Simon Armitage, singer-songwriter Richard Walters and multi-instrumentalist & producer Patrick Pearson.

Paul Heaton is back on Saturday 8 July, five years after his last sell-out show at the spectacular venue, to perform tracks from throughout his career including classics from The Beautiful South and The Housemartins right through to his solo projects.

Paul, who is known for hits including Caravan of Love, Happy Hour and Song for Whoever, will be joined by a special guest singer who will be revealed soon.

Gabrielle is one of the most successful soul singers of her generation. She scooped two BRIT awards and MOBO Awards for Best Single (‘Give Me A Little More Time’) and Best Album (‘Rise’). After being nominated on five separate occasions, she won her first Ivor Novello Award in 2008 when she was honoured with the prestigious accolade for Outstanding Song Collection.

Gabrielle said: “I can’t wait to party with everyone at Tynemouth and celebrate the record that launched my career three decades ago! Time sure does fly when you

are having fun.”

Mouth of the Tyne Festival, supported by Capita and Port of Tyne, is now in its 17th year, and features big outdoor concerts, a programme of free street entertainment, huge community parade and special intimate shows at Playhouse Whitley Bay.

Tickets are now on sale at www.ticketmaster.co.uk and www.seetickets.com.

Woodland Burial & Crematorium

Northumberland Crematorium

Nestled within the woodlands, our stone built, 78 seat chapel sympathetically settles into it’s natural surroundings. Officially opened by the Duchess of Northumberland in October 2022, the calming and modern chapel is spacious with its vaulted ceiling and is flooded with natural light. Webcasting and tribute screens are available. The chapel can be used for both cremation and burial memorial services.

Woodland Burial

Burial plots are located in Clarefield Meadow & Coquette Glade, both are wild flower meadows surrounded by native woodlands. Memorial trees such as Oak, Rowan and Apple Blossom scatter the meadow, in years to come this will turn the meadow into a thriving woodland and nature reserve. Ashes plots and traditional burial plots can be purchased in advance or at time of need. We have woodland and wildflower scattering areas.

Pet Burials

Griffon Wood offers a beautiful, natural and peaceful final resting place for your beloved pets and companions. Losing a pet can be like losing a member of your family, and it is important to give them the farewell and remembrance that they deserve.

• The isle of Jersey measures just 45 square miles and Jersey Royal potato fields make up approximately one third of the island - equivalent to roughly 5,500 football pitches.

• Unlike other carbohydrates, such as pasta and rice, potatoes are a great source of Vitamin C, especially the skins (100g of Jersey Royal New Potatoes would provide you with 25% of the RDA for vitamin C).

A GOOD READ

ONCE UPON A RIVER by

In Once Upon a River, Setterfield has created a captivating and atmospheric novel that follows the story of a mysterious a young girl, found on the banks of the Thames and seemingly resurrected from the dead. She’s taken in by the local pub owner and his family, who nurse her back to health, but her appearance sets off a chain of events that draws together a disparate group of characters, including a traveling storyteller, a grieving father, and a barmaid with a remarkable voice. As the girl’s identity is slowly revealed, the characters are forced to confront their own secrets and desires.

One of the most striking things throughout the novel is Setterfield’s mastery of language. She paints vivid pictures of the river and its surroundings, making the reader feel as though they are right there alongside the characters. The descriptions of the water, the sky, and the countryside are all rich and evocative, adding to the sense of mystery and wonder.

The novel explores themes of loss, grief, and the power of storytelling, weaving together a rich tapestry of folklore and mystery, with enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing until the very end.

THE ALICE NETWORK by Kate Quinn

The Alice Network is set in the aftermath of World War Il though it straddles both world wars, and follows two women, Charlie St. Clair, and Eve Gardiner, as they navigate the dangerous world of espionage in search of a lost relative.

Charlie St. Clair is a young American woman who is pregnant out of wedlock. She is sent to Europe by her family to have the ‘problem’ taken care of. But she breaks free to search for her cousin Rose, who disappeared during the war. She meets Eve Gardiner, a former spy for the Alice Network, a secret organization of female spies, who now spends her day drunk, haunted by her past. Together, the two women embark on a journey to find Rose and uncover the truth about her disappearance.

As they delve deeper into the world of espionage and the aftermath of the war, they encounter a cast of characters, including former spies, soldiers, and politicians, who each have their own secrets. The two women must navigate this dangerous world, relying on their wits and the support of each other to stay alive.

The novel explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and

the aftermath of war. Its powerful narrative is a testament to the bravery and resilience of women in a time when their roles were often limited. Quinn’s novel is wellresearched and beautifully written that will appeal both to fans of historical fiction and anyone who enjoys a pageturning spy thriller.

OLD GOD’S TIME

Recently retired policeman Tom Kettle is settling into the quiet of his new home, a lean-to annexed to a Victorian castle overlooking the Irish Sea. For months he has barely seen a soul, catching only glimpses of his eccentric landlord and a nervous young mother who has moved in next door. Occasionally, fond memories return, of his family, his beloved wife June and their two children.

But when two former colleagues turn up at his door with questions about a decades-old case, one which Tom never quite came to terms with, he finds himself pulled into the darkest currents of his past.

A beautiful, haunting novel, in which nothing is quite as it seems, Old God’s Time is about what we live through, what we live with, and what may survive of us.

THE INVISIBLE STRING

The Invisible String is a charming children’s book that teaches about the bonds of love and connection that exist between all people. The story tells of two siblings who learn about the “invisible string” that connects everyone to everyone else, and how this connection can bring comfort and reassurance during difficult times.

Joanne Lew-Vriethoff’s colourful illustrations, perfectly capture the warmth and love that the story conveys. The text is simple and easy to understand, making it perfect for very young children. The message of the book is one of hope and reassurance, and it would be a valuable tool for parents and caregivers to help children understand the concept of connection and the importance of loving support network.

The Invisible String is delightful and uplifting, and will resonate with readers of all ages. It is a perfect addition to any child’s library, and will be read and enjoyed for years to come.
