THE JOY OF SINGING Looking for a new hobby? Can you sing in tune, and are willing to learn? Read on!

T

yneside A Cappella is a choir of women who enjoy singing popular songs in four part close harmony in the a cappella style (without accompaniment – just voices). The aim is to sing to the best of our ability and have a great deal of fun along the way. Musical Director Peter Jones is a very experienced director and vocal coach, who gets the best out of the choir with a mixture of hard work and fun which has resulted in a wonderful sound and high standard of singing from the 47 members. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at West Moor Community Association, from 7.30 – 10.00 p.m. The Centre has a large, free car park and is on a main bus route. The choir is a mix of singers with some previous experience and those who have never sung before, and who come from a wide background and age group – teachers, students, housewives, health service, local government, retail, business, hospitality, retired – who are brought together as friends to enjoy singing and also several social events organised through the year outside of rehearsals. The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. Many of the girls say how much better they feel at the end of the rehearsal, even when its been a tough day or life isn’t at its best, the joy of singing, the support of good friends and the magical experience of a group of people coming together and performing as one lifts the spirits. There is a song for everyone - Queen, Nat King Cole,

10

Michael Buble; some Irving Berlin and some Beatles. Members pay £10 per month, and for that they receive music, teaching aids (teach track CDs/MP3s), performance outfits, excellent rehearsal facilities and support to learn how to sing to the best of their ability. None of the musical leadership receives any payment for their services – the choir is a team dedicated to musical enjoyment for all. New members are encouraged to learn at their own speed and become part of the performance ensemble when they and the Musical Director feel they are ready. There are no formal auditions, singers need to be able to sing in tune, hold their line, and be willing to learn.

The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people.

The choir performs regularly throughout the year at a variety of venues including Newcastle Civic Centre, Seaton Delaval Hall, various local churches, Beamish Museum, The King’s Hall at Newcastle University and current plans are shaping up for an exciting weekend in Ireland in April 2018 to take part in the Bangor International Music Festival. NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE #ONENORTHSHIELDS

The Chamber have launched a new and exciting campaign to help celebrate the wonderful things happening across North Shields. By creating a social media presence with a brand new #OneNorthShields Facebook page and Twitter account, the Chamber have made it easy for local residents and businesses to share their news and events. The #OneNorthShields campaign aims to promote and celebrate businesses, events, offers, schools and voluntary groups with a view to boosting our local economy and creating a strong, inclusive network across the town. David Bavaird, Chair of the Chamber, said: “We realised that we were missing an opportunity to increase engagement with the businesses in the town, not only with our members, but also the wider community and to help with the continued engagement and economic development in North Shields. “We decided to join forces with RusbyMedia, who are also based in North Shields, so that we can show what this area has to offer. It is a very exciting time for us and a huge step for the Chamber. We are delighted to be working with RusbyMedia as we build North Shields up as an attractive place to live and work.” The #OneNorthShields campaign has already gathered more than 450 Twitter followers and 150 Facebook likes for the COC in the last month, with interest growing daily. Future plans include #OneNorthShields merchandise, a #OneNorthShields Twitter networking hour, events and more community engagement. 12

Representatives who are supporting the #OneNorthShields campaign.

Dani Ruth, Events and Catering Co-ordinator at the Linskill Centre, said: “We at the Linskill Centre are very excited to be involved with the #OneNorthShields campaign because as a community centre our main objectives are to bring opportunities and to encourage growth within our local community. “We hope the campaign will allow us to build relationships and connections with more like-minded people and organisations, ultimately enabling us to have a greater reach and benefit more people. It’s exciting for North Shields to be getting recognised as the vibrant, ambitious and warm place that we all know it is.” The launch of #OneNorthShields comes after North Shields was recently chosen to be twinned with Welsh town Merthyr Tydfil, with a view to attracting more economic growth and employment.

FESTIVAL BREAKS RECORDS

The first Proper Food and Drink Festival of 2017, was held in North Shields over the Bank Holiday weekend, and over the three days broke all records for the number of visitors with the event being a showcase for all of the best local food and drink in the area. The event now in its fourth successful year saw a significant increase in visitors to the town and was another opportunity to promote North Shields. Commentating on the weekend Chamber Secretary Miles Walton commented ‘the Proper Food and Drink

Festival has now become an important part of our calendar and is a real opportunity to encourage visitors to the town and to see what we have to offer and we look forward to working with the organisers to plan future events’. In addition, Mark and Shelley Deakin, the organisers of the Proper Food and Drink Festivals, are finalising details for a new event. It is called The Great North Feast and will run from 25 to 28 August in Bents Park, South Shields. “It’s going to be a massive celebration of food and drink but it will also bring together the community for a social eating experience which has never been seen before in the North East. We’ll also be trying to break loads of records,” said Mark.

HANDS ON FUN AT ROCKPOOL SCHOOL For an exciting way to learn about sea life, let your children pay a visit to Rockpool School

B

est described as an attractive sea aquarium, a rockpool is an oasis at low tide for small sea-life creatures. Crabs, starfish, sea snails and many more marine species call rockpools home, and they are a fascinating environment to watch and study. Rockpools are an exciting way for children to learn about some of our sea life, but they can be quite hard to find. So, with this in mind, we are pleased to introduce you to a brand new Rockpool School, right here in the heart of North Tyneside, allowing children to experience first-hand the wonderful creatures and sea life that call rockpools home. Rockpool School was establish in March 2017 by Nicola Everitt who, after seeing the pure joy and excitement on children's faces who live so close to the coast but never manage to experience rockpool animals first-hand, saw an ideal opportunity to give them that chance. She established the school (which is ran by locally qualified Marine Biologists) to give local children a hands on rockpool animal fun and learning experience, offering workshops, birthday parties and school visits. Nicola herself, has always been interested in our seas and everything within them, and regards herself extremely lucky to be in the process of completing her PhD in Marine Science. She has been very honoured to have been able to carry out cetacean research, offshore wind farm 16

research and possible impacts on surrounding marine life. She has also been able to work with, and train, both seals and sea lions. She is therefore very passionate to be able to share what she has learnt in a fun and educational manner. Sessions provided by Nicola are tailored to individual needs and workshop type, and include a variety of rockpool animals, including crabs, starfish, brittle stars, urchins, sea snails, hermit crabs and anemones. The individuals not only gain a hands on learning experience, they also learn amazing facts about these animals. She can tailor each workshop to every occasion, this may also include crafts, making of marine slime, crab lining, decorating treasure chests with sea glass and shells and many more. The school has already inspired many children to further their learning on this topic, with some even going on to attend Marine Biology Summer schools. The school has quickly earned a fantastic reputation, receiving 5 star rating from both schools and satisfied parents. Comments have included ‘very likely to recommend these session’, ‘very satisfied and would use the service again’, ‘children 100% benefit from the workshops’, ‘very pleasant staff and appropriate speak for the children's age’, ‘brilliantly interactive and hands on’. For more details about the school and upcoming events, visit www.rockpoolschool.co.uk or facebook. com/rockpoolschool or call Nicola on 07704 336457.

O

ne of the UK’s hottest trends in hair colour is ‘Ombre’, a treatment that can be seen on any catwalk and in every magazine across Britain, with celebrity's ranging from Drew Barrymore to Halle Berry sporting the look. With colours ranging from bold and bright to soft and natural, there’s something to suit everyone. Fiery copper tones can warm up your face and add a brightness to already beautiful brown hair, or why not try Black Cherry for the ladies that like dark hair with a bit of a red jazz! The list is endless, with two tone colours to suit all. Why not go extreme, with bright and fun colours with vibrant pinks? Our favourite thing about these bright vibrant colours is that you still get the depth of the colour at the root, but an amazing blast of colour and vibrancy through the ends. We have a fantastic special offer at the moment - Ombre colour and a cut and style at an amazing £65.00, saving you £15.00 for the month of July! There are so many options available you could try a new style each month in our more than capable hands! 20

Even though the close cropped buzz and faded hairstyles are still popular, there is a lot more choice at the moment to keep you on trend. Current trends in longer length with longer fringes, or even swept back for that extra cool variation are very popular, not forgetting to add texture or a messy look with a range of Tigi products that we stock within the salon. Disconnected haircuts are becoming very popular and are on trend for 2017, with a sharp contrast between short shaved sides and a longer length on top. We also offer a wide range of other treatments for men, including waxing, massage therapy, facials and spray tans, not forgetting the highly sort after contour wrap! This is becoming more popular among men who are wanting a slender and slimmer body. The wrap treatment, firms and cleanses the skin while also removing toxins from the body. We also guarantee that you’ll lose six inches, so give it a try! Give us a call or pop into the salon and book your treatments now and we will transform you into a new you! Photographer Harry Hann with his photograph that became the inspiration for thr Fisherman;s Memorial

NORTH SHIELDS FISHERMEN’S MEMORIAL TO BE REVEALED IN SEPTEMBER Sunday 24th September will be the day that the final design will be revealed

P

hotographer Harry Hann (known locally as “Harry Hann - The Photo Man”) took a photograph in the 1950’s (entitled “The Salt”) of a typical fisherman of the time sitting on a bollard on the Fish Quay taking a break from his work. This would become the inspiration for a Memorial to fishermen lost at sea from the port of North Shields. With Harry’s permission, County Durham sculptor Ray Lonsdale based one of his drawings for the memorial on the image and called it “Fiddler’s Green” – it was one of 8 designs, by four sculptors, that was put to a public vote back in the summer of 2016. “Fiddler’s Green” won with just over 47% of all the votes cast, and very soon Ray Lonsdale’s 2.25x life size sculpture will stand proudly on the fish quay for the next 150 years or more. North Shields photographer Alison Spedding will be documenting the progress of the memorial being built and has organised two “meet the sculptor” Question & Answer events, hosted by BBC correspondent Adrian Pitches for Saturday 12 August at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre for 2:15pm and 4:15pm. Adrian will lead the Q&A but members of the audience will be invited to ask Ray questions too.

22

Tickets are priced £4 and are now available from the Old Low Light Heritage Centre at Clifford’s Fort or contact info@alisonspedding.co.uk It will be a great opportunity for those attending to listen to Ray talk about how he actually set about creating this unique piece of public art and to see photographs by Alison Spedding of the memorial as it is being constructed in Ray’s South Hetton workshop. The final design made in weathering steel, bestknown under the trademark COR-TEN, developed to eliminate the need for painting as it forms a stable rustlike appearance when exposed to the weather, will be in place for around 150+ years. The design will be made in weathering steel, bestknown under the trademark COR-TEN, developed to eliminate the need for painting as it forms a stable rustlike appearance when exposed to the weather. The final design will be revealed to the public on Sunday 24 September between 11:30am – 1pm at a ceremony in front of what the group hope will be hundreds of local residents on the foreshore at Clifford’s Fort, North Shields on the green space that looks out beyond the North and South Piers. The Group hope that the day will be one of celebration

with music and dancing as they aim to recreate a sense of “Fiddler’s Green”. According to the song of the same name, Fiddler’s Green is the mythical place fishermen go to when they die, it is a legendary supposed afterlife, where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops playing, and dancers who never tire. In 19th-century maritime folklore it was a kind of afterlife for sailors who have served at least 50 years at sea. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 24

TEETH STRAIGHTENING AT SHIREMOOR DENTAL PRACTICE Teeth straightening used to be a slow and painful process, but modern solutions at Shiremoor Dental Practice could have you smiling within months.

I

f you are embarrassed about your teeth that are not straight, or you have large gaps between your teeth, modern orthodontics (teeth straightening) now offers a range of solutions. Also known as discreet or invisible braces, teeth can be straightened and smiles aligned in a matter of months with excellent aesthetic results. Invisible braces are a popular choice with adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months on end. The technology behind invisible orthodontics is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases. Some systems are completely removable, allowing you to take the aligners out when eating or drinking. Other systems have clear brackets and tooth coloured wire, making them hardly noticeable.

All orthodontic treatment requires good oral hygiene habits by the patient and regular visits to the practice for check-ups and adjustments.

How much does it cost?

Compared to other orthodontic treatments Quick Straight Teeth is one of the most cost effective. This is due to the shorter treatment time required. Prices can start from as little as £1399 which includes your brace, your retainer and teeth whitening. For those patients who proceed to treatment we offer competitive prices and also a selection of affordable finance options.

Does it hurt?

As with many orthodontic treatments you may notice some slight discomfort- particularly when initially fitted or tightened. This is completely normal and can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

It is recommended that you wear a retainer following treatment to stop your teeth from relapsing to their original position. You can have a removable or fixed retainer depending on your personal needs and lifestyle. This can be discussed with our Dentist. FOCUS ON: WHITLEY BAY

LOOK YOUNGER & MORE RADIANT WITH A NEW TREATMENT AT HÀNA BEAUTY CLINIC Dawn Wilson tries out the innovative Guinot Hydraderm Cellular Energy Machine, a new addition to the acclaimed Hàna Beauty Clinic in Whitley Bay.

I

t’s perfectly natural to want to look as youthful as you feel inside. It is also important to know you have anti-ageing options that don’t involve surgery, expense or pain. Hydraderm Cellular Energy facials are an alternative to aesthetic medicine, such as Botox or fillers, with its range of anti-ageing, clinically proven treatments using a combination of Dynamic Ionisation, Thermal Energy and Lifting Stimulation. I was invited along to Hàna Beauty Clinic by Emma, the salon owner, to try this innovative new treatment. The clinic has yet again been awarded the status of Guinot Crown Salon 2017. This coveted title celebrates the highest achieving Guinot salons and spas in the UK and Ireland who demonstrate success, dedication and loyalty to the brand. By visiting a Crown Salon, clients can be confident that they are choosing a Guinot salon of the highest distinction with flawless principles in environment, customer care and treatment expertise, so I knew I was in good hands! My treatment began with a consultation on any issues I had with my skin, so Emma could target these areas. I have combination skin, but some really dry patches on my cheeks due to cold weather and central heating. Emma then left me to remove my top and lie on the bed, covering myself with a towel. She then began with a soothing welcome massage around neck and shoulders, followed by a thorough Cleanse and exfoliation. Next was the first step using the cellular energy machine, where Emma applied bespoke serum gels to my face, eyes, neck and décolleté. The gels were then massaged into my skin using metal rollers. Emma mentioned that I may feel a tiny little charge of electricity over more sensitive areas, however I felt nothing except the tiniest sensation under my nose, not remotely painful. These electrical charges cause the serums to be pushed into the skin and the current (dynamic ionisation) causes 'chaos ' within the cells waking them up, helping to regenerate and plump up the skin. The lift part of the facial is next, with lymphatic

28

drainage to remove toxins from the skin. Emma used the machine to stimulate my facial muscles, which tones and lifts muscles (this part can be done as a facial on its own as an intensive non-surgical face lift course). I could really feel my muscles contracting, so I knew it must be working! The final step was perfect for decongesting my skin, increasing the circulation and increasing energy within the cells, in other words giving me a real boost! Oxygenating cream was massaged into the skin with heated 'mini iron ' using thermal energy. This step was really soothing. Finally, Emma cleansed off all the products applied an eye and firming face mask, whilst giving me a soothing hand and arm massage.

Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested!

Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! I'm still feeling the after effects a few days later, much longer than I've felt before from a facial. The cost of the facial I received was £92, and definitely worth the money, but prices start from as little as £50 for the Lift Facial, and they can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I would recommend giving the girls at Hana a call and they can advise you as to the best option for you. A course of treatments is advised for long lasting results, but a one off can be booked if you need a pick me up. (although I guarantee you'll be so pleased with how your skin looks and feels you'll really want to book more!) Why not take advantage of the offer on the advert opposite, and get 15% off any Cellular Energy treatment. Hàna Beauty Clinic, 24 Illfracombe Gardens, Whitley Bay, NE26 3SL. LOCAL CHILDREN’S WEAR COMPANY HELPS TO RAISE SYNDROME AWARENESS Williams Syndrome affects around one in 18,000 people in the UK

A

North East based baby and children's wear company helped to raise awareness of Williams Syndrome, a rare chromosome disorder by using models in their most recent product photo-shoot who have the condition and to co-incide with Williams Syndrome awareness month in May. It is a condition where early diagnosis is key to a child's development, health and ensuring parents get the right support. Three of the seven models used by Rusk & Rebels have Williams Syndrome; including owner Gayle Westgarth's son Dylan aged 15. Founded in 2011 by the motivation of providing future employment for Dylan and potentially other young adults who are living with learning and development difficulties. Rusk & Rebels design and create cool clothing with a personalised twist. Gayle said, "I have always wanted children with Williams Syndrome to model for us, but with it being so rare it is only recently I have met another two local families affected by the condition and I am delighted their children took part in the photoshoot. The pictures are fabulous and we are very proud." Gayle continues "I was fortunate Dylan was diagnosed at 14 months but this is not always the case and early diagnosis is key for families to access the right support. Families shouldn't be put in a position of 34

questioning health professionals for a number of years when they suspect their child has the condition, as was in the recent case of a 5 year old friend's daughter being diagnosed after initially being dismissed by the doctors and health visitors". Common features of Williams Syndrome are: Characteristic Facial Appearance (features include small upturned nose, long upper lip, wide mouth, full lips, small chin and puffiness around the eyes). Heart and Blood Vessel Problems, Hypercalcemia, Low Birth Weight / Slow Weight Gain, Feeding Difficulty, Irritability during infancy, dental abnormalities, kidney abnormalities, hernias, Hyperacusis (sensitive hearing), musculoskeletal problems, over friendly personality and development delay and learning difficulties. Up and down the country in May many families were fundraising to not only raise money for the Williams Syndrome foundation, but to create a wider awareness of the condition to empower parents with knowledge and educate health and education professionals. Rusk & Rebels supported the month by donating all their profits from any online sales (May only) plus any commission through Gayle's at home parties booked in May and June. For more information on the charity visit www.ruskandrebels.co.uk or contact Gayle on 07500956838.

NORTH SHIELDS’ PARTNERSHIP WITH WELSH TOWN SET TO IMPROVE LIVES

T

HE LIVES of residents and business owners in North Shields are set to be improved thanks to a new partnership with a town more than 300 miles away. On the back of North Shields’ recent twinning with Welsh town Merthyr Tydfil as part of the Carnegie UK Trust Twin Towns project, business leaders from both areas have begun work on a plan to help bring further prosperity to the local economy. After sending a trio of representatives to visit Merthyr, just north of Cardiff, at the beginning of April, the North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce welcomed a Welsh delegation to the north-east to begin work on their plan for economic improvement. By sharing their knowledge gained from decades of industry experience, business leaders from both towns believe their partnership can make a real difference in future. David Bavaird, chairman of North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: “We are working on a plan for both towns which we think will further improve the economic performance of North Shields. “This, in turn, will have a positive impact on the people who live here, and improve their life-chances, giving them more opportunities in different areas of their lives. “The town already benefits from strong engagement between the local authority, business, voluntary and educational sectors, and we are confident the Merthyr Tydfil partnership will enhance this. “Already, businesses based in our two towns are in contact with each other, sharing best practice and helping each other conquer challenges they face. They have a lot to give us, and we have lots to share with them. “This is a very exciting time to be part of the huge network of businesses, schools, volunteer organisations and residents within the town. The future is looking very bright for North Shields.” Merthyr Tydfil and North Shields were two of just ten towns selected by Carnegie UK Trust for their towntwinning trial, aimed at reinvigorating local economies. Both historically industrial towns, they both have the 38

same focus of attracting economic growth and improving the employment and wellbeing opportunities for their residents. Antonia Pompa, Merthyr Tydfil’s business improvement district co-ordinator, was part of a delegation of three who spent two days touring North Shields. Their stay included visits to, among others, North Tyneside Council, the Fish Quay, town centre and Cobalt Business Centre, as well as various businesses and schools. Antonia said: “We have learned a lot from each other, working to understand each other’s town centres, what and who makes them tick. “This will build towards sharing plans and ideas which could make a huge difference to both of our towns. “What works in Merthyr might not work in North Shields and vice-versa, but by speaking together and sharing our experience we think we can help move things forward for both towns. “We have already begun linking our library services and football teams. The libraries have been sharing what is being read and what they are doing, and hopefully North Shields will play Merthyr in a pre-season friendly before next season. “Things are really taking shape which is so exciting. Who knows where it is going to end up. It will be interesting to see, a few months down the line, where things are. I’m confident the partnership will be a huge success!” Representatives from Carnegie UK were also able to tour the town, and were present at a drinks reception at The Exchange, on Howard Street, North Shields, to celebrate the partnership. Pauline Radcliffe, project manager for Twin Towns UK, said: “Carnegie UK Trust invited towns that were interested in working with and learning from other towns across the UK to be twinned together. “We are delighted with what we have seen in North Shields, particularly the collaboration between the business, education and voluntary sectors. “The relationship between the two towns already seems to be very positive. We have seen a lot of ideas and passion being shared which is what it is all about!”

LIFESTYLE

DE-CLUTTER TO FEEL CALMER Irene Anderson, founder of The Happiness Company, discusses how de-cluttering doesn’t just clear your home, it also clears your mind.

W

e are really in to spring now, bringing with it longer days more light and, if we are really lucky, some warmth and sunshine. The world feels new and fresh again and there is a natural desire to lighten up in what we wear, what we eat and our homes. Spring cleaning, getting rid of clutter and blowing away the cobwebs of winter makes us feel better. The science behind this is that everything is energy and holds an energetic vibration. When our homes are full of things stuffed in cupboards, drawers, attics and spare rooms it actually affects how we feel and has a negative ‘dragging down’ energy. In just practical terms, clearing out things we haven’t used or worn for years and organising items so a) you know where they are and b) you can get to them easily, can save you time and huge frustration. TIDYING FESTIVAL The Japanese Tidying expert Marie Kondo suggests having a tidying festival, where you really just go for it and get rid of everything that no longer serves you and only keep things that you know you will use and that bring you joy. Then folding and organising what is left so that everything becomes easily accessible. I know that may sound like a daunting task, but I took a weekend to do this and was amazed at just how much stuff I had accumulated that hadn’t been used for decades. I gave away a lot, binned a huge amount and organised the rest. My goodness what a difference. No more things falling out of cupboards when I opened doors and no more drawers full of junk. The only clothes that are in my wardrobe now are things I actually wear. But, more impressively, I felt so much calmer and there was a lighter atmosphere in the house and I could find everything I wanted. No more frantically scrabbling around in the downstairs cupboard looking for matching shoes! Organising and tidying your workspace and paperwork is hugely beneficial in helping you work more

42

productively. Go through your email box and have a delete or junk session. Unsubscribe to things that clutter up your in-box. Also delete any one on Facebook that clutters up your news feed with rubbish or negativity. If the idea of a full on de-clutter festival seems just too overwhelming, then why not decide on a room or a cupboard at a time. Just as important as de-cluttering our physical space is de-cluttering our mind. How many of us have a mind stuffed full of lists of things we need to do, situations we are mulling over, problems that need solving. The list is endless, and the brain just goes into overdrive and ceases to work efficiently and that is when we have accidents, get in a panic, loose things, forget what we were doing. Do you recognise this pattern? If you do here is something to try. WRITE IT DOWN Get yourself a notebook and each night before you go to bed write down what you need to do in the morning. Then write down anything that is bothering you or you are struggling with and how you are feeling about things in general. This is hugely beneficial and helps promote better sleep because you have ‘downloaded’ information your brain no longer needs to store or worry about. Keep a little note book with you during the day and jot down thoughts, ideas, new things to do. This takes a huge burden from the brain and you will notice how much more clearly you can think. If you want more information on this subject, look up Marie Kondo on YouTube or get her book ‘Spark Joy’ Also Three Simple ways to de clutter the mind Lisa Washington YouTube Irene Anderson runs The Happiness Company, specialising in Movement, Music, Mindfulness. www.thehappinesscompany.co.uk

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

TAKE A PEEK AT PACKHORSE YARD Set just off Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, Packhorse Yard is home to a fine selection of local independent retailers.

D

avid Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us "We couldn't be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June last year. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we approach our first anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future." The yard is home to half a dozen units, all bringing something unique to the town. The first shop along the alleyway is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June 2017 the shop will be celebrating its first birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www. jandjmodels.co.uk, or follow them on facebook. The yard is also home to Willow Home & Gift, an independent, family run gift shop where you can discover a wide selection of affordable and unique gifts anything from a handmade piece of glassware to a gift for a mischievous mutt, they’ve got everything covered. The store is passionate about supporting UK designers/makers, and stock a variety of locally designed or produced products, so you are sure to find something a little different that won't break the bank either. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful

antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. Finally, Lateral Art, owned by Stephen and Fiona Greenway, sells artists materials from great brands that are often hard to find on the high street, as well as a wide range of artist’s papers and decorative and wrapping papers. The art range is accompanied by notebooks and journals from Leuchtturm 1917, Moleskine and Fabriano as well as Frenchic Furniture Paints and Decopatch papers, models and glues. The store wants to support local artists and run a monthly art competition. Visit www.lateralart.co.uk for further details. In an extension to the shop, The Lateral Art Studio allows the pair to offer classes in drawing and watercolour in the heart of Morpeth. The Studio is compact and allows small groups to get maximum benefit from sessions. They hope to grow their range of courses and welcome other artists, who may want to deliver courses, to use the studio. During the week, for a small hourly charge, the space is made available to local artists who just need a space to work or even just browse through their selection of art and craft books for inspiration. THE EXCHANGE: ART WITH A HEART Bringing together like minded people, The Exchange in North Shields is delivering a diverse mix of music and theatre performances and art.

T

he Exchange on Howard Street, North Shields, is a fast-growing performance venue offering a wide range of events, plus affordable space and networking opportunities for the arts and cultural sector in North Tyneside. A registered charity, bringing together like minded people delivering a diverse mix of music and theatre performances, art, literature and more, The Exchange is an all-inclusive, unique destination which aims to offer world-class service to the local community. Although it has established itself as an important music venue in North Tyneside since opening its doors in early 2016, The Exchange is increasingly being used by local artists, writers and theatre companies as an exhibition and event space. Thursday evenings in The Exchange café bar feature an eclectic mix of art and literature, with something to suit all tastes and ages. The first Thursday of every month hosts an art launch featuring the work of talented local artists, with free live music, while the third Thursday in the month is the Stanza poetry event, where you can spend the evening immersing yourself in the spoken word, or take part yourself during the open mic session. Every fourth Thursday is theatre scratch night, where The Exchange showcases work in development from some of the most exciting writers and theatre makers in the North East. Come along and be a part of

48

the artistic process by offering your feedback on what you have seen. It is always an interesting evening and a rare chance to see contemporary plays in their infancy. During the summer months you will not be disappointed with the array of events on offer. The 1st June is an art launch by North Shields artist Janet Bowyer, with a mix of still life and portraiture. On 7th June Blowin’ A Hooley theatre company brings you the Tom Hadaway play The Filleting Machine, which also has a North Shields flavour, being set around the town’s fish quay. This production is supported by Sunday for Sammy. From 11th to 16th June The Exchange plays host to Mamu’s House of Fashioning, an extravaganza of sculptures and mixed media from another home-grown talent, Rea Browne. Throughout the whole month of July the venue is home to the Art With a Big Open Heart exhibition, featuring artworks donated by generous local professional and amateur artists, with all proceeds going to Save The Children. There will be weekly ‘My Story Adventures’ sessions for children, run by the event organiser Emma Nelson. Last year’s exhibition raised almost £3,000. Get in touch with The Exchange on 0191 258 4111 or follow us on Facebook @attheexchange. Tickets for The Filleting Machine are available from www. ticketsource.co.uk/theexchange or from the venue.

NORTH SHIELDS YMCA CONTINUES HUGE TRANSFORMATION

N

VOLUNTEER - FUNDRAISE - DONATE

One visit to their buildings or website will demonstrate YMCAs commitment to their charitable aims. Their mantra ‘Volunteer - Fundraise - Donate’ makes plain the ways in which people can contribute to their work. However they also talk animatedly about ‘charitable trade’. Steve Pugh, Head of Operations says: “We are making it easier and easier for people to get involved through volunteering and fundraising, but we understand that many people have busy lives. There are 54

orth Shields is a town rich in history and for the last 138 years YMCA has been an important presence locally, contributing to the rich tapestry of local life. But now, more than ever before, YMCA is demonstrating commitment to creating supportive communities where young people can thrive. Over the last 3 years, YMCAs buildings in Church Way have transformed through an extensive development programme funded by, amongst many others, Big Lottery Fund. YMCA initially created 15 self contained flats to provide homes for young people at risk of homelessness, as well as overhauling their gym. They now have 23 young people living under their care, and a further 12 units of accommodation opening imminently. YMCA gym now has in excess of 1000 active members. YMCAs recent fundraising efforts have raised much needed funds to help the development of new accommodation for young people in North Shields. 60 people slept out in cardboard boxes in March and raised over £10,000 and 2 local runners (Adele Dunn and Jenni Sime) raised over £5,000 competing in the London Marathon. 35 runners will be fundraising again in this years Great North Run with a target of a further £10,000 and other fundraising events are in the planning. But that’s not all! YMCA has created an allotment with the help of their residents, which came second in a national Fruit-full Communities competition. They have run Sportivate classes to motivate inactive young people to get involved with exercise through yoga, circuits and power lifting. They have worked extensively with young people in areas such as Howdon and Jarrow, engaging them in positive activities and helping to curb anti-social behaviour. Dean Titterton, CEO of YMCA North Tyneside adds: “It’s been an astonishing couple of years, but there is more still to come. We’re currently completing the development of a new reception area. From mid-June all our visitors will enter through a purpose built entrance on West Percy Street, which will include a stunning welcome area and café. It’s a hugely exciting time. We hope our services continue to draw more and more people into North Shields and help to improve prosperity for the local community.”

HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN

In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care. 58

What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.

What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.

For more information, please contact Eothen’s Head Office on 0191 281 9100 or email enquiries@eothenhomes.org.uk

WORRIED ABOUT HEARING LOSS? It is estimated that there are more than 11 million people in the UK with some degree of hearing impairment or deafness (that’s about 1 in 6 people). My Hearing Clinic answer the most common questions on the subject...

What is the biggest cause of hearing loss? Age-related hearing loss is the most common cause; however noise damage is a close second. Noisy environments at work, at concerts or events can have a negative impact on your hearing. Why is hearing loss an increasing issue in modern society? As a standard, people who are approaching retirement age tend to be a lot more social than those in times gone by. Social interaction relies largely on hearing, so declining hearing can have a large impact on the quality of our social lives. We are becoming a much more health-conscious society which means people are willing to present hearing issues to doctors and consultants more readily so we can combat the issue earlier. How can I tell if I have hearing loss? If you are suffering from hearing loss, you may be experiencing one or many of these symptoms; difficulty understanding words - especially when there is a lot of background noise, struggling to hear in noisy groups, having to turn the television or radio up to a high volume, difficulty hearing the telephone or doorbell, struggling to determine which direction noise is coming from, asking people to repeat themselves, misunderstanding what people say, feeling tired or stressed due to having to concentrate when listening, avoidance of social settings and finding one to one conversation difficult. 72

What should I do if I suspect I’ve got a hearing loss? Your first course of action would be to have a hearing test, this should be a full and comprehensive taking into account the health of your ear and include various testing elements in order to gain a complete view of your current hearing health. What different kind of hearing aids are available? Suitability for hearing aids depend largely on the following factors; degree of loss, shape of ear/canal and personal preference. There are behind-the-ear hearing aids (BTE) which sits comfortably at the back of the outer ear, passing the sound through a tube to a custom ear mould. Receiverin-canal (RIC) aids use a tiny speaker in the ear canal and has a less blocked feeling that a behind the ear aid. the inthe-ear (ITE) and in-the-canal (ITC) aids sit in your outer ear and your ear canal respectively while a completely-in-canal (CIC) aid is the most discreet option and almost invisible – with the aid sitting deep and securely in the ear canal. How often do hearing aids need replaced? Hearing aids now last longer than they once did thanks to advances in technology. A properly cared for hearing aid should give you many years of enjoyment provided your hearing loss does not worsen rapidly. We do recommend replacing your hearing aids every 5 years or so. It’s important to take care of your ears, which is why at My Hearing Clinic, they're there to cover all aspects of hearing health. Give them a call today to find out more on 0191 5197291.
