SPACE TO CHILL MISTER WOODS HAVE CREATED A FANTASTIC NEW OUTDOOR SPACE AT THEIR BROADWAY STORE. DRINKS, FOOD AND GOOD VIBES APLENTY...

M

ister Woods is a name synonymous with quality coffee, coupled with excellent customer service.

Since opening their first coffee shop in North Shields over 10 years ago, owners Steven and Dianne Smallwood haven’t looked back, and now run three hugely successful venues in Tynemouth and North Shields. Their newest coffee shop based on the Broadway, on the outskirts of Tynemouth, opened its doors in 2014, and has become a popular hangout for all ages, catering for business meetings, parents with tots, school children, local groups and tourists. As the popularity of the coffee shop grew, Steven and Dianne needed some extra space, especially during busy weekends. They had an outdoor area at their disposal at the back of the coffee shop so, after a complete overhaul, Woods Broadway are now pleased to announce the opening of an uber cool indoor/outdoor space in their back yard…Woods Yard. Woods Yard is a relaxing space serving Wylam craft beers, bathtub gin jars (served in jam jars) their speciality Woods drinks and woodfired pizzas – all helping to create a great vibe! Steven and Dianne designed and created the yard, with help from local tradesmen. Previously it was just a storage area and was not realising its potential. So, they set about transforming it into an outdoor space with more seating, keeping in theme with their industrial look whilst adding a bit of luxury to make it extra cosy. The pictures speak for themselves!

The Yard is ideal for private events, and Woods Broadway have teamed up with local food companies, The Fish Shack, Pan Asia and Little Fishy Company, all of whom are available for catering. If you'd like to hire the space for private events, email dianne@misterwoods.co.uk .

Woods Yard is a relaxing space, complete with a bar serving Wylam craft beers, bathtub gin jars and speciality Woods drinks

Woods Broadway also hosts live music every Saturday from 7pm, and once a month they have #redcarpetsessions, which are a showcase of four local artists who come along and perform. Be sure to get there early as the sessions are extremely popular! You can keep updated on all their upcoming events on their social media @ Woodscoffee. The yard is open Monday to Friday 9am-8pm, Saturday 9am to 10pm and Sunday 9am -6pm. The Coffee Shop opening times are Monday to Friday 7.30am-8pm, Saturday 8.30am to 10pm, Sunday 9am to 6pm. 142 The Broadway, Tynemouth, NE30 3RT Tel: 0191 296 4412 7

ith just weeks to go now until the public unveiling of sculptor Ray Lonsdale’s spectacular 9ft high memorial to fishermen lost at sea from the port of North Shields entitled “Fiddler’s Green”, North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project in conjunction with Cygnet Events and North Tyneside Council’s events team are gearing up for the big day! The Group would be delighted if as many of the local community could join in by coming down to the site (the piece of green land near the red buoys on the fish quay sands) and be a part of history in the making. There will be an opportunity for the public to take the very first photographs next to the memorial, before either heading up to a marquee at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre to join in the festivities or maybe heading off to one of the bars/restaurants on the fish quay that are also celebrating “Fiddler’s Green Day”. To top off the event there will be a musical fundraiser by Hector Gannet starting at 3pm on the top floor of the Old Low Light Heritage Centre – “Moving North –

NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE PROGRESS WITH TWIN TOWNS

The Chamber are pleased to report that they are continuing to make real progress with the Carnegie Twin Towns Project which has twinned North Shields with Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Both towns have now spent a considerable amount of time exploring the similarities, differences and capacities of each the towns and are now developing a Town Plan for North Shields and Merthyr Tydfil. Some of these plans are common to both towns including the use of digital media and promoting tourism while North Shields is developing some town specific plans including the promotion of the #onenorthshields brand and how we can develop markets in the town following the success of the Victorian Market and the Proper Food and Drink Festival both held in Northumberland Square. Commentating on the Twin Town Project David Bavaird, Chair of the Chamber commented, ‘the Carnegie Twin Town Project has allowed us to see North Shields in a new light with us looking beyond the town centre to many of the businesses and retail parks from the Tyne Tunnel, to the Silverlink and to the edge of Tynemouth which has led us to question some of the things which we take for granted and we are now working hard on a plan for North Shields which will result in real and measurable benefits for the town and our whole community.’ Elected Mayor Norman Redfern, Councillor Tommy Mulvenna and Elected Young Mayor Oscar Daniel celebrate the opening of the YMCA café

MAJOR DEVELOPMENT AT THE YMCA

This month saw the doors of a brand new café, reception area and entrance area open at Chamber members the YMCA on West Percy Street. The YMCA were joined in celebrating the opening by Elected Mayor Norman Redfern, Councillor Tommy Mulvenna and Elected Young Mayor Oscar Daniel as well as specially invited guests, staff and residents. The £227,650 development is the result of 9 different organisations coming together to transform the space. Chairman of the Board for YMCA North Tyneside, Ian Pearson said, “This project represents what YMCA is truly about and where it is going. It represents more than a 12 week building project, more than a 3 year building redevelopment programme, more than a key milestone in a 5 year strategic plan and more than just a nicely done out entrance and a great cup of coffee. YMCA is about creating ‘a community where everyone is healthy, happy and connected’, inspiring members of our community to help transform the lives of young people. Offering them accommodation, training opportunities, encouragement to get into education and employment and the chance to fulfil their potential. But just as importantly, YMCA is doing this in a way where they bring young people and our community together in innumerable, small, but impactful ways – in the gym for example, through volunteering opportunities, through the creation of the café.” Further details of the development and about the YMCA in North Shields can be found at their website www.ymcanorthtyneside.org .

TEETH STRAIGHTENING AT SHIREMOOR DENTAL PRACTICE Teeth straightening used to be a slow and painful process, but modern solutions at Shiremoor Dental Practice could have you smiling within months.

I

f you are embarrassed about your teeth that are not straight, or you have large gaps between your teeth, modern orthodontics (teeth straightening) now offers a range of solutions. Also known as discreet or invisible braces, teeth can be straightened and smiles aligned in a matter of months with excellent aesthetic results. Invisible braces are a popular choice with adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months on end. The technology behind invisible orthodontics is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases. Some systems are completely removable, allowing you to take the aligners out when eating or drinking. Other systems have clear brackets and tooth coloured wire,

making them hardly noticeable. All orthodontic treatment requires good oral hygiene habits by the patient and regular visits to the practice for check-ups and adjustments.

How much does it cost?

Compared to other orthodontic treatments Quick Straight Teeth is one of the most cost effective. This is due to the shorter treatment time required. Prices can start from as little as £1399, which includes your brace, your retainer and teeth whitening. For those patients who proceed to treatment we offer competitive prices and also a selection of affordable finance options.

Does it hurt?

As with many orthodontic treatments you may notice some slight discomfort- particularly when initially fitted or tightened. This is completely normal and can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

It is recommended that you wear a retainer following treatment to stop your teeth from relapsing to their original position. You can have a removable or fixed retainer depending on your personal needs and lifestyle. This can be discussed with our Dentist. FOR THE LOVE OF GIN ANNUAL TYNESIDE GIN FESTIVAL RETURNS NEXT MONTH

G

in lovers are set to be in good spirits in September after the organisers of the much loved Tyneside Gin Festival confirmed today that it will be rolling into town for the second year running. After a successful launch in 2016, event promoters Nineteen32 have announced that the gathering will take place again on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th September at Linskill Centre in North Shields. People are being urged to clear their diaries and make way for yet another memorable event which is expected to attract thousands of fans of the infamous “Mother's Ruin” over the course of the two days. Billed as being an inclusive gin party for all levels of interest of the much loved British classic, the Tyneside Gin Festival, a strictly over 18s only affair, will be complimented with an array of gin sampling, a feast of live entertainment and delectable street food stalls. Speaking ahead of today's announcement, event organiser Sarah Cook, said: “We want to take the frumpiness out of your standard gin festival and open it up to everyone by creating a relaxing environment where people can let their hair down and enjoy themselves. “While he gin is the star of the show, there will be other amazing drinks, delicious street food and some fantastic local performances to immerse yourself in. Whether you’re a gin connoisseur or just out for a good time, there is something here for you! “Everybody has different tastes when it comes to gin, so we try to offer an eclectic mix of distillers. Each of the distillers brings something different to the event. From the traditional to the contemporary, there’s a flavour for all palates.” On arrival, festival goers can expect to receive a G&T to whet their appetites ahead of a full programme of treats, before heading inside to discover the other features on offer. The main hall will host a gin inspired market and outside there will be delicious street food vendors ready to help guests soak up the cocktails. For those with a keen interest in this much-loved spirit, guests will also be given the chance to learn first-hand about the Juniper's journey from the plant to the glass,

22

whilst sampling the different varieties of all of the brands on show. The two-day festival will be split into three sessions and will have a distinctly local flavour, with a lot of the gin brands and singer songwriters hailing from Tyne and Wear. Fellow Tyneside Gin Festival Promoter John Peacock has said that Linskill Centre is proud to be able to host local experts and believes it is vital that the centre continues to host affordable and varied first-class entertainment for the people of Tyne and Wear. “We wanted to bring the big festival feel to people’s doorsteps, and we certainly achieved that last year,” explains John. “The entertainment line-up is yet to be announced, but it will feature some of the best acoustic talent the coast has to offer. “As for the gin, there will be more than thirty options available on the bars, as well as numerous national distillers exhibiting and offering free samples. We are really excited to see the likes of Poetic License Distillery and Tinker Gin returning to Linskill, as well as welcoming new faces from the ever growing world of gin.” Meanwhile, the Linkskill Centre has pledged that it will continue to promote and host yet more amazing entertainment over the course of the next 12 months. John and Sarah, added: “The Linskill Centre is a community hub in the heart of North Tyneside, but isn’t your average community centre. “We have big ambitions and want it to be known as the go to place for exciting events on your doorstep. Customers can enjoy their gins in September, happy in the knowledge that their money is helping to raise valuable funds to sustain the centre and ensure its place in the community for generations to come.” Tickets for the forthcoming Tyneside Gin Festival are on sale now priced at just £8. The event will take place on Friday 15th from 6 pm until 10:30 pm and will see two instalments on the Saturday 16th leg; 12 noon until 4:30 pm and 6 pm until 10:30 pm. 80z Rib Eye Steak

HEARTY DISHES WITH A MODERN TWIST WE TRY OUT ONE OF WHITELY BAY’S NEWEST RESTAURANTS, EVANS BISTRO

W

hitley Bay has a long standing reputation for both the quality and the variety of its eateries. The most recent addition to the town is set to further enhance this reputation, by serving the best of our local produce in an innovative way.

Evans Bistro, right in the heart of the town, claims to be passionate about good food, whilst serving hearty dishes with a modern twist. Located two minutes’ walk from Whitley Bay Metro Station (in the old Tiger Bill's building on Whitley Road),

Conveniently located in Whitley Bay, the restaurant is two minutes away from the metro station

24

the restaurant proudly sits on the extensive corner plot, boasting 85 covers and giving a modern feel with exposed bricks, booth style seating and a relaxed urban décor. They cater for all tastes, with a menu full of variety and mouth-watering choices. My wife and I popped in on a weekday afternoon, and we both found the restaurant to be bright and airy with a really good buzz about it. We sat in one of the booths and took in the atmosphere, generated from a good mix of couples and families. For my starter, I ordered the breadless scotch egg wrapped in bacon with rocket and house relish, a dish I have never experienced before, but it was really tasty and one I will certainly be having again. My wife opted for the crispy crab cake with pea puree and pea shoots, flavour combinations that work really well (I can vouch for that as my fork did stray over to her plate on more than one occasion!). For our main courses neither of us could take our eyes off the specials board, there were lots of mouth-watering options to choose from. I picked the 8oz rib eye steak served with house chips, asparagus, black pudding and

poached egg, whilst my wife decided on the toad in the hole with Cumberland ring, mash, roasties and onion gravy. Both dishes were generous portions, fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The steak was exactly as requested (medium rare), and the slightly runny poached egg was a real treat and brought the dish together well. My wife commented that the mash was incredibly moreish (and she is a mash aficionado!) and the onion gravy was divine. All of the dishes were a triumph, and we left feeling very satisfied and with no room for dessert! Evans Bistro aims to be as inclusive as possible, they have Vegan options on their menu (more available on request), are fully accessible and have installed a changing bed that can hold up to 20 stone in their disabled bathroom. They also have a dedicated play area to keep the young ones entertained while you relax and enjoy the food (although the kids menu is also packed with fresh hearty options). Having spoken to the joint owners, their passion for the business is clear to see. They have taken a lot of time to source the best wines, lagers and ales and stock from a local brewery. I had the organic lager with my main course, which I can highly recommend. Evans Bistro definitely brings something new to Whitley Bay. The quality of their food, the ever evolving menu choices, and their portion sizes, combined with their passion for good service makes it a very welcome addition to the town. We certainly won’t be strangers!

CLUB BRINGS THE COMMUNITY INTO BOWLS

A

s a part of Collingwood Bowling Club’s mission to bring the community into bowls, a number of events have been held by the North Shields-based club during June and July. First up was a friendly match against Appleby Bowling Club, where many of Collingwood’s new members were given a first opportunity to sample team bowls. These matches are a great opportunity for new starters to improve their understanding of the game and bowl in a very friendly but competitive situation. The weather was good, the buffet was excellent and the day was a great success. Following this event, the club hosted a ‘thank you’ friendly versus staff from VODA (Voluntary Organisation Development Agency) to celebrate the support given by the Agency in assisting the club to transform and improve the park facilities. Once again, many of the club new starters were given an opportunity to play for the team and gain further experience on the basic skills of the game. Club Trustee, Alan Hall, said: “We are extremely grateful to VODA for all the advice and support we’ve received and arranging this bowling match is just our little way of saying thank you.” This event was also blessed with good weather, excellent cakes and was another great success. The event which really captured the headlines this summer was when the club hosted 71 transition pupils from Norham High School for a couple of hours, during which the club members were able to give the pupils some basic

coaching and friendly guidance on the game. The pupils seemed to have enjoyed the experience, even if it just meant that they were away from the classroom for a short period! All of the teaching staff who attended were delighted at how the day worked out and the club looks forward to hosting many more events in the future in partnership with the school. Go to Norham High School website (gallery) for photos taken at the event. The club continues to encourage members of the community to come along to the park and sample bowls in the hope that more people will be encouraged to take up the sport. Every Saturday morning the club host a free taster session from 10.00am to 12.30pm. If you are interested just come along with some flat soled shoes and we’ll lend you some suitable bowls to give it a try. LIFESTYLE

TURN OFF THE SWITCH Irene Anderson, founder of The Happiness Company, on the benefits of recharging and rebooting...

W

hen your computer, phone, television and other electrical devices stop working properly and you’ve tried everything to sort out the problem, the advice we are given is “if these steps do not work, switch off the device, wait a while and then switch back on again”.

In 9 out of 10 cases, switching off for a while does the trick. Most things work better after a little time in the switched off position. The same is true of us. We need down time. Time to relax, re charge and re boot and yet in today`s frantic world it seems that ‘being busy’ is almost like a medal of honour. In addition to our busy lifestyles most of us have phones constantly with us so that we are forever checking up on what`s going on with others, looking at Facebook feeds, checking emails, hooked up to technology like an intra venous drip. This is not good for us. It makes our brains twitchy and jumpy and unable to be still. We need to turn off the switch and wait a while. We will work better after that, we will see things more clearly, gain a better perspective and reduce the stress hormone Cortisol which, when left unchecked, is the cause of inflammation and disease in the body and makes us fat! When we fail to switch off for periods of time we are more prone to anxiety, poor sleep patterns and irritability. 30

TOP TIPS FOR TURNING OFF THE SWITCH 1. Build a short switch off period into your daily routine.

Little and often periods of down time can make a huge difference.

2. Take three deep breaths. Really inhale fully into the lungs.

3. Stretch your arms up high and straighten up through the spine lifting the rib cage so you open up the body. 4. Close your eyes for two minutes and just concentrate on your breathing. This really gives the eyes a rest from screen time.

5. Each day turn off your phone or leave it at home and get out for a walk in the fresh air. Try to walk near trees they have an incredibly soothing effect on the nervous system and of course give off oxygen. (A whole new therapy called Forest Bathing, based on the healing effect of woodland walking is becoming very popular).

6. Focus on what you can see, smell and hear around you. Give your brain a break from thinking about what you need to do, or how to solve a problem. Just gently focus on the here and now. Notice the shape of leaves, the sound of rain or a stream, the song of a bird. It is amazing how many times answers to difficulties have come to me in this state, sometimes after weeks of worry. 7. Try and find a quite space and time to eat. Switch off phones and television. Chew your food slowly and enjoy the taste and textures. (I am aware the suggestion of switching off television whilst eating could get me flogged as a heretic, but I am strong and I can take criticism!)

8. Be bored. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of boredom. Life is all about balance. You don’t always need to be getting stuff done. Sometimes it’s perfectly okay, and necessary to shut down, kick back and do nothing. I hope you try some of this tips. Let me know how you get on. We will be offering a Morning of Mindfulness in the Autumn to give further tips and advice. Contact me at ireneanderson5@hotmail.co.uk or go to the Happiness Company Facebook page and leave a message.

NEW LOOK PIE SHOP EXPANDS IN NORTH SHIELDS Recently voted as one of the top three ‘Best Places’ to buy pies by the readers of the Newcastle Evening Chronicle – The Pie Shop has some proper scran on offer as well as some canny Geordie craic!

hether you're 'Not that hungry' or 'If Ya Clammin', the recently refurbed and expanded Pie Shop in North Shields, serving an extensive range of fresh locally sourced traditional British pies, is well worth a visit.

The original 'Pie Shop' opened in 2010 in the West End of Newcastle, and has gone from strength to strength. Customers have been showing their approval by returning again and again and the growing, glowing reputation meant that new customers soon became regulars. Building on the success of the first shop, the owners decided to branch out and so, at the beginning of February 2016, they opened their new premises on West Percy Street (opposite the Terminus Club) in North Shields. The shop was originally a take away only venue but, after an extensive refurbishment, now boasts a seating area catering for up to 30 diners. The new look Pie Shop re-opened at the beginning of June, and the feedback has been fantastic. The décor has an urban chic feel to it and, as you can see from the pictures, is uniquely different from anything else in North Shields. The shop has a bright and airy feel to it, managing to maintain the relaxed café atmosphere whilst having the look and feel of modern, industrial bistro. You can make your choice from a great range of Pies and Meal Deals, the names of which reflect the Geordie dialect. The range of 'WOR PIES' include classics such as Mince and Onion, Steak and Kidney, Just Steak, even

vegatarian options are coming soon. The pies can be accompanied by home-made mash, home-cooked mushy peas, beans and delicious gravy. 'WOR DINNERS' consist of 1 pie, 2 scoops of homemade mash, home-cooked mushy peas or beans and gravy. For those of you with BIG appetites you can order an extra-large helping entitled "IF YA CLAMMIN". However, for smaller options, you can go for the "NOT THAT HUNGRY" or the uniquely named "IF YA A BAIRN". The owners have spent a lot of time sourcing the very best pies from a variety of local suppliers, and the criteria they use are taste and quality. The tasty, creamy mash is freshly made on the premises, and the mushy peas are prepared in a tried and tested way (like Grandma used to do!). Their range is ever increasing, and they have several combinations of mash, peas and gravy to compliment the extensive range of pies on offer. Having sampled most of the varieties on the menu, we at ABC can definitely recommend the chilli mash and the minty peas! A new addition to the menu, which we are sure is going to be a massive hit, is the ‘Pie Tea’ (a play on the more traditional high tea!). For only £15 per person you get a slice of gammon with flavoured peas pudding, a selection of 3 pies, a sample of every kind of mash and peas, and a selection of deserts (including the indulgent sticky toffee pudding)! The Pie Shop are proud to run their suspended Coffee/ Pie scheme, and any uncollected tickets are donated to a local charity every 3 months. They also support the Police, Ambulance Service, Nurses and our Armed Forces, by giving free water or juice to anyone on duty who wants to pop in for a quick re-fuel. The hard work and excellent products resulted in The Pie Shop getting into the final seven of the Newcastle Council’s Small Business Award from a list of hundreds of nominations. They were also recently voted into the top three 'Best Places' to buy pies by the readers of the

They also won Newcastle’s best food and drink hospitality award 2016, another wonderful accolade! For those who don't feel like queueing, simply phone in your order, then you can collect and enjoy back at home. The shop was a very welcome addition to the town when it opened, and the recent refurb and increased seating area gives locals a really good alternative to the other eateries in North Tyneside. The Pie Shop pride themselves on delivering proper food at canny prices, a combination they have mastered over the last few years, and one that is sure to continue to be a hit! The shop is open 11am - 7pm Monday to Thursday and 11am - 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The Pie Shop, 63 - 65 West Percy Street, North Shields, NE29 0DJ. Tel: 07597134259 33

CHANGING FORTUNES OF NORTH SHIELDS IN THE SPOTLIGHT EXPERTS CAME TOGETHER IN NORTH SHIELDS TO FIND OUT HOW THE FORTUNES OF THE TOWN HAVE BEEN TURNED AROUND.

T

he Carnegie UK Trust and Newcastle University Institute for Social Renewal, supported by North Tyneside Council, held a special event at the Old Low Light heritage centre, entitled ‘Turning Around Towns in the North East’. It came about following a recent visit to the town by researchers from Carnegie as part of the Twin Towns project, which has seen North Shields twinned with Merthyr Tydfil. After their visit, the researchers revealed that North Shields was one of the best examples they had seen where the local authority, business community, education and third sector work together to benefit the whole community. As a result, Carnegie has hailed the town as a successful case study to share with other towns across the UK. Rebekah Menzies, Carnegie UK Trust, said: "North Shields is a town with ideas, energy and aspiration to build a bright future. “Carnegie UK was delighted to revisit the Old Low Light and bring together experts from across North East England to discuss the themes from our international research on Turnaround Towns. “'Having a story of place' is one of the key themes from our research. North Shields has a proud heritage and identity, and is forging new stories to ensure it prospers into the future." North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn added: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome experts from Carnegie, Newcastle University and a number of other organisations to North Shields. “North Tyneside is a great place to live, work and visit and I am delighted that our joint efforts to breathe new life into North Shields are being recognised as a successful example on the national stage. “There have been many positive changes in North Shields in recent years - we still have much to do but we

Further improvements are also in the pipeline with proposals to transform vacant offices in Northumberland Square into housing, apartments being built at Smith’s Dock and new businesses regularly opening in the town. David Bavaird, Chair of North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: “We are delighted that Carnegie and Newcastle University decided to hold the important turnaround towns event in North Shields. “They chose North Shields following recent visits to the town where they saw first-hand how well the local authority, business community, education and third sector work together for the benefit of our whole community and they were keen to showcase this to a wider audience.” Professor Mark Shucksmith, Director of Newcastle University’s Institute for Social Renewal, said: “Working closely with our partners The Carnegie UK Trust we’re aiming to find new ways to improve the lives of people by influencing policy and encouraging innovative practice and partnership work, and the Turnaround Towns project is just one example of this.”

VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED WITH CHAIRMAN’S COMMENDATION AWARDS LOCAL RESIDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITY

T

he Chairman of North Tyneside Council’s Commendation Scheme recognises those who give unselfishly to others through volunteering their time and effort to make a significant difference to their local community or by helping other residents. Several volunteers from North Tyneside VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency) were among those presented with awards by Councillor Cath Davis MBE at the recent ceremony, including young volunteer Harry James and volunteers from VODA’s Good Neighbours project and its shopping scheme, represented by Beverley Wilkinson, Debbie Wood and Bill Magdwich.

GOOD NEIGHBOURS VOLUNTEERS

VODA’s Good Neighbours project recruits, trains and supports volunteers to undertake a variety of practical tasks such as dog walking, small odd jobs and help with shopping, then matches them to people in the local community who may be struggling with day-to-day tasks. With over 100 volunteers having been involved in the project, Good Neighbours received two Commendation awards - one for their general help in making a positive difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in North Tyneside, and one for the members of the Good Neighbours Shopping Project. 38

The volunteers were nominated by Dee Johnson, Community Navigator at North Tyneside Council, who said: “We found a lot of people were struggling to do their shopping and paying a lot for support for assistance. Looking for a more affordable solution, I approached both Asda - who agreed to open extra wide aisles during quiet times - and VODA to identify potential volunteers, and that’s how the shopping group was formed. The volunteers pick beneficiaries up and support them around the shop before all meeting to enjoy at cup of tea at the Rising Sun Country Park. The volunteers also support the clients back home and help to put the shopping away. Some fantastic friendships have been formed and further social events have happened. The group now meet up for meals, cups of tea and days out. their time each week and I feel they all go above and beyond, the support given is outstanding.”

YOUNG VOLUNTEER, HARRY JAMES

Harry has been volunteering with VODA since summer 2016, when he was a participant on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme and produced an incredible film and website documenting the struggles that young people face when homeless. Since completing NCS Harry has gone on to be an ambassador for the programme and volunteer his time across multiple projects and campaigns. Harry was selected out of 1,000 applicants for a place on the National Leaders programme which saw 100 young people from around the country take part in a week of leadership skills development in London (Harry is pictured centre of the picture below with fellow NCS leaders). Earlier this year Harry also took part in VODA’s Celebrating Trustees project; he was one of 30 young people who planned and hosted an event for 100 local trustees and committee members. He also volunteers for the Scouts as a Leader where he supports the young people who attend the group to achieve personal outcomes and improve their skill base, confidence levels and achieve personal goals. VODA’s Josie Robinson, who nominated Harry, said: “Harry has such a positive attitude and is so engaged in his community and everything he does – he’s a real

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

NEWCASTLE BUILDING SOCIETY HELPING COMMUNITIES

I

BEING AT THE HEART OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES IS CORE TO NEWCASTLE BUILDING SOCIETY’S PURPOSE

n 2016, The Society set up the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund at the Community Foundation, to provide grants to local charities and community groups which are put forward for support by their customers. Since then North Shield’s branch on Bedford Street has celebrated two of its local community groups receiving funding. Volunteers with a North Tyneside lifesaving charity – Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade are now better equipped for their work, thanks to a four-figure grant from Newcastle Building Society. The long-standing charity, which was the world's first volunteer brigade when it was set up in 1864, supports the coastguard and police for cliff rescue, coastal search & rescue and shore-to-ship rescues, and averages around 120 call outs every year. After being put forward for a grant by Annette Wright, a customer at Newcastle Building Society's North Shields branch, whose team has previously carried out fundraising work for TVLB, a £1,000 Society donation enabled the charity to buy a range of muchneeded new equipment. A much-loved North Tyneside community garden project is also receiving a grant.

44

Work on the Lovaine Community Garden started eight years ago when a group of local people took control of a small patch of wasteland near Lovaine Place and Cecil Street in North Shields, and began to transform it into a useful community asset. As part of the next phase of the garden's development, the volunteer committee which runs the garden had been looking for ways to fund the purchase of a new polytunnel to grow a great range of plants and vegetables. Pauline Stewart, who was one of the garden's original founders said: "It will make a massive difference to the amount and type of produce we're able to grow and sell, which will in turn generate money that we can put back into adding even more to the garden in the future." The garden is available for anyone to use, and regularly plays host to community events. Stephen Burt – Branch manager at the Society’s Bedford Street branch said: “Our Fund is designed to support good causes and community improvement projects within the areas in which we're based, and we're very pleased to be able to help the garden team add another dimension to its excellent work."

A WEEKEND OF...HAPPINESS!

I

n June of this year, Irene and Catherine Anderson, along with their team at The Happiness Company, took 120 people to Gilsland Hall Hotel, set in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside, for a weekend of… happiness! The group, made up of members of Irene and Catherine’s Zumba classes and choirs, enjoyed Zumba, Burlesque and Showtime dance sessions, singing workshops, guided country walks in the glorious local countryside and mind, body, flow sessions. Friday evening saw everyone enjoying a quiz and dancing and Saturday night was a seventies themed disco. The weekend finished with a Sunday morning stroll and a meditation.

The weekend was an opportunity for everyone to enjoy good company, lovely food and relax in the beautiful surroundings . A real chance to recharge the batteries. Their next event is A Morning of Mindfulness, an event which is designed to give accessible tips and tools to help with the stresses of everyday life. To be the first to hear about upcoming events and to become part of their friendly and welcoming community then head over to Facebook and like The Happiness Company page or visit www.thehappinesscompany.co.uk

CHARITY ON THE SEARCH FOR DOG-LOVERS IN TYNE & WEAR

H

GIVE SOMETHING BACK AND MEET SOME LOVEABLE LIFE-CHANGING PUPPIES ALONG THE WAY

earing Dogs for Deaf People - the sole organisation which trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds - is actively recruiting dog lovers who would like to take care of their adorable puppies and dogs in the Tyne & Wear region. The role of a volunteer dog trainer is to look after a gorgeous pup in their own home from 8 weeks old, for around 16 months. Volunteers provide the puppy with skills and obedience training, and take them along to weekly puppy classes and into as many different environments as possible. All volunteers are fully supported by the Charity’s expert dog trainers, who provide guidance every step of the way. Caroline & Terry Roeves, Volunteer Dog Trainers, say: “We have had our first puppy, Daphne, a Show Cocker Spaniel, for over a year now. We have made dozens of new friends from regular dog walks, we are much fitter and enjoy opportunities to socialise Daphne in local libraries, schools, stores, cafes and restaurants. We would definitely recommend volunteering for Hearing Dogs: your life will change for the better from day one!” Puppy Training Instructor, Lucy Parkin adds: “If you 50

local area and are very keen to hear from some more! As long as you have a car, a secure, private garden, and enough time to train a puppy or dog on a daily basis, then we would absolutely love to hear from you. You really can make such an enormous difference.” To find out more about volunteer dog training opportunities, please contact the volunteering team: volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk, 01844 348122 or visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk/volunteer

SUFFERING FROM DOMESTIC ABUSE? THERE IS A WAY OUT

D

omestic Abuse is a hideous crime which shatters lives, often in secret, leaving people feeling vulnerable and trapped. You do not have to be trapped; there is a way out.

Shock new figures released by the Crown Prosecution Service show that offences of violence against women and girls continue to increase. The number of convictions for domestic abuse offences is at a record high. Whatever your perception of domestic abuse is, it does not respect geographical lines, gender or social class. It affects men and women and is spread across the full spectrum of society. Many people tend to think domestic abuse is limited to the use of violence and intimidation but it is much more far reaching. The Government definition of domestic abuse is: “Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional.” It is not just violence. Abusive behaviour can involve damaging someone’s self worth, controlling finances, manipulation, preventing someone from having friendships or hobbies, humiliation, making someone feel guilty about what they’re wearing and what they eat. The list goes on. The Government have consulted on creating a new offence of domestic abuse, criminalising coercive and

controlling behaviour. Other protective measures have been introduced and the police have additional powers. Most people don’t know where to start and are in fear of contacting agencies and the police for fear of repercussions. Then of course you worry about the practical things: • Where will you live? • Can you stay in the home? • Can you be protected by court orders? • How you will receive an income? • What about the children? • How do I pay for help? Speaking with a lawyer in complete confidence is the place to start. We can provide all of the answers and information you need so that you can make informed choices without your abusive partner knowing anything about it. You do have options. We can assist you to obtain the necessary orders to protect you and/ or your children without your abusive partner knowing in advance if the abuse is particularly serious and we can assist you to plan for all of the practical things in advance of any action being taken. If things are particularly serious, court orders can be obtained the same day. Legal Aid can still be available to assist you regardless of your income We offer a free, no obligation initial appointment for up to 30 minutes where you can receive practical information about all other questions you may have, so get in touch today to make a free appointment with a specialist local lawyer and know your options.

If this affects you and you need to talk to someone in confidence about what you can do to stop the abuse please contact Clare Usher or Amir Assadi now by phone on 0191 296 1777 or by confidential e-mail to lawyer@hindle-campbell.co.uk to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss how we can help you. 54

PLANS REVEALED FOR TRANSFORMATION OF TYNEMOUTH ‘TOY MUSEUM’

P

lans have been revealed to transform a derelict former North East tourist attraction into a ‘cultural hub’ and public events space.

The Palace Building in Tynemouth – best known for housing the former Toy Museum – is to be rejuvenated under new plans, which will see “very significant” investment made to bring the building back into active use. Developer Sudfeld Ltd has been chosen by North Tyneside Council to carry out the project, following several years of negotiations. Plans have now been submitted to the authority for permission to proceed. The space formerly occupied by the Toy Museum, which closed in 2012, is now set to become a cultural space for exhibitions and events, with many local businesses already expressing interest in making use of it once it has been completed. Sudfeld also wants to transform the exterior of the Palace Building, which occupies a prominent seafront position on Tynemouth’s Grand Parade, to help rejuvenate the run-down façade. All existing tenants of the building will remain in their current units. Trevor Hastie, director of Sudfeld, said he is now keen to press on with bringing their plans to reality, subject to planning approval being granted and the co-operation of the other tenants of the Palace Building. “Following detailed negotiations to get to this stage, we now want to move forward as quickly as we can to bring this iconic building back into use and restore it to its original grandeur. It is in such a fantastic position and it is such a shame it has stood empty for so long,” he said. “We want to create a cultural hub and exhibition 58

space which is well-used by the local community and visitors to Tynemouth alike. “We have already been approached by a number of local businesses about the possibility of holding events there once it opens. We want to create something that benefits everyone and that is a real asset to the local area, and will continue to work closely with North Tyneside Council to achieve that. “We have had a lot of support already, and I’d like to make mention of the Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn, who has been very helpful in moving this forward to get us to the position we are now.” Norma Redfearn, Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, said: “I am delighted to see these exciting plans for the Palace Building move closer to becoming a reality. “The building has been empty for some time so it’s great to see it being brought back to life. “The plans look really impressive and, provided they are approved, I’m sure will bring people back to the area and I wish Trevor and his team every success going forward.” Sudfeld has been supported by Newcastle law firm Sintons, with Mark Dobbin, Partner and Head of Real Estate, acting for the developer. Mark Dobbin said: “Trevor has been unfaltering in his commitment to this project, putting together comprehensive plans to bring this iconic seafront site back into use for the benefit of local residents and businesses, tourists, and the wider North East economy. “We are very pleased to be involved in such a fantastic regeneration project, which contributes further to the ongoing investment and transformation of the surrounding coastline, and will continue to support Sudfeld as they push on with efforts to make their plans a reality.”
