FREE UP YOUR TIME

WITH BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU SPEND CLEANING AND TIDYING YOUR HOME EACH WEEK?

I

n 2016, a survey by the Office for National Statistics found that women do 26 hours of unpaid work, with men putting in 16 hours.

Just think what you could be doing with that time instead – going for a walk, learning to ski, finally reading that bestseller that’s been on the bookshelf for months or just catching up with friends over a coffee. Helen Ross, who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside, looks after homes across the area, delivering the highest standards of cleaning, tidying and laundry and taking care of those jobs that eat into your free time. In the UK, we have some of the longest working hours in Europe and that, combined with running a busy home, means that many of us will end the week exhausted, overwhelmed and resentful after trying to juggle chores, work and family. Helen says: “As modern men and women we still tend to think we can and should be doing it all. Well, the truth is we can, but if we do, we’ll very probably be exhausted and fed up! “More people than you might imagine now have a cleaner – not because they have huge houses or armies of staff. Rather it’s because they want to make the very most of their free time and would rather not spend it mopping floors or scrubbing the sink!” Just carving out a bit of me time each week and leaving some of those never-ending responsibilities to us can help you to feel more relaxed, productive, energised 14

Helen Ross runs the awar d winning Bright & Beautiful dome stic housekeeping service

AND SURROUNDING AREAS Paul Edwardson is launching his own Oven Cleaning Business as part of the Oven Wizards Franchise. Paul has lived and worked in the local area all of his life, so, as he knows the area really well, he believes there will be a strong demand for his services. Paul says “I was looking for a business idea that would be something I would enjoy doing and that would provide a great service to local people. I came across the idea of an oven cleaning business and then started to research the market. I soon realised that becoming an Oven Wizard offered me a great opportunity, particularly with the support of a successful National Franchise Brand. Mark Abbott, owner of the Oven Wizards business said “From the first time we met Paul, we knew he would make a great success of running an Oven Wizards Franchise, particularly because of his great passion for friendly customer service.” Mark went on to explain “There is a growing demand from people who want to have their ovens professionally cleaned because it is probably the hardest and most hated job in most households “. Oven Wizards have provided Paul with comprehensive

training which will enable him to professionally clean all sorts of makes and models of ovens. As well as Whitley Bay and North Shields Paul also covers Wallsend, Tynemouth and all towns and villages across North Tyneside. A recent Survey carried out indicates that oven cleaning is one of the most hated chores in the home. Taking into account the fact that there are over 26 million households in the UK and that nearly each one has at least one oven and a hob, the growing domestic cleaning market therefore provides unlimited opportunities to delight our customers. LOCAL NEWS NOMINEE: Local rap artist J Smirk

BEST OF BRITISH? YOU DECIDE! A FRESH NEW MUSIC TALENT FROM NEWCASTLE HAS BEATEN THOUSANDS OF OTHER ACTS TO BE NAMED IN THE UK’S TOP TEN UNSIGNED ARTIST

L

ocal artist J Smirk has been nominated in the Best Unsigned Male category at the 2017 Unsigned Music Awards (UMAs).

Launched in 2012, the awards have seen more than 50,000 music fans cast their vote, including celebrities such as rock star Frank Turner and International footballer Gareth Bale. J Smirk burst onto the scene just a year ago, and has quickly made a lasting impression with big tunes and addictive melodies, all with stories to tell and real meaning behind the lyrics. J even recently supported N.W.A on their “Straight Outta Compton” tour at the O2 Academy. If you haven’t heard of him yet, you certainly will in the near future! J is son to popular Soul and R&B DJ Sista Soul and has worked with producers of the like of Pitbull and others, including fellow north east rap talent such as Kay Greyson and Kema Kay. J Smirk said: “It’s an honour to be nominated, one of the hard things about being independent is gaining that recognition we all need to help push on, so it’s incredible to get the credit we all deserve”. Other award categories include Best Female, Best Band and Best Song, the latter previously won by Molly Smitten-Downes, who went on to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Content. The awards are organised by Best of British Unsigned (B.o.B), the UK’s number one website for ‘Unsigned Music’ which supplies a weekly radio show to 70FM stations in 15 countries. The winner of each category is crowned thanks to an online public vote. Matt Graveling, B.o.B founder said: “The UK produces the best musicians in the world and we get to play them before anyone else! The UMAs are the much needed recognition for these acts and we hope will

18

help motivate them to achieve more and more." Nominees are also put forward for 'The Critic's Choice Award', and J Smirk will hope his sound impresses a panel of three industry experts. This year's judges are: Max Helyer, guitarist for rock band You Me at Six, Dave Gilyeat, radio presenter for BBC Introducing, and Louise Dodgson, Editor of online music directory The Unsigned Guide. Max Helyer said: "For me it's important to support upcoming artists and help to give them more exposure. I’m looking forward to listening to the wide variety of styles of music submitted, some of which will hopefully become part of my personal everyday music catalogue. David Gilyeat added: It makes a real difference to get behind new unsigned music. The Talent of the future depends on our passion for it in the present. The 2017 awards are sponsored by Vocalzone who produce world famous throat pastilles and herbal tea used by singers and voice professionals. George Ponsford, Sales & Marketing Director said: "Unsigned music in the UK is stronger than ever before, and these awards are not only great for recognising some of this country’s most promising artists, but also giving them the platform to share their music with the masses online.”. The vote for Best Unsigned Male 2017 takes place at www.vocalzone.com/vote between Monday 16th OctoberSunday 22nd October, so make sure you go online and support one of our best local up and coming talents. FRIENDLY FACES: Stephen Burt and his team at Newcastle Building Society in North Shields

NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE NEWCASTLE BUILDING SOCIETY GOOD FRIENDS

Chamber members Newcastle Building Society branch managers across the North East’s biggest building society have undergone training to become Dementia Friends as part of the UK’s biggest ever initiative to change the way people think, act and talk about dementia. Newcastle Building Society branch managers have undergone the training to understand more about what it’s like to live with the disease, ensuring they can provide sympathetic and sensitive assistance to those who live with the condition when they visit a branch. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, someone develops dementia every three minutes. Many face the condition, which is caused by diseases of the brain, alone. Stephen Burt and his team in the North Shields branch completed their Dementia Friends training through a representative at North Tyneside Council who was also a customer. He had also worked with the branch to become a Safe Place in North Shields for vulnerable people in the surrounding area. Stephen said: “It’s great that the Society has really got behind this initiative. Being able to understand the condition and assist 24

customers with dementia, practically and sympathetically, is important. It’s a natural extension of the personal face to face service we offer across our region. “

MORE REASONS TO VISIT NORTH SHIELDS

The Chamber are pleased to report the development of a number of new important developments to complement what we already have in North Shields to encourage residents and visitors to visit North Shields. On the 24th of September the very impressive Fisherman’s Memorial statue was unveiled, a fitting tribute to the brave fisherman from North Shields, and the Chamber would like to note our thanks for the hard work from so many people to make this possible. Friday’s have also become a busy time in North Shields, with the Land Train now running every Friday from Tynemouth to the Fish Quay and letting people buy our excellent fish and chips. These developments along with the revamped Beacon Centre, the new café at the YMCA, the fantastic Northumberland Park, the Old Light Heritage Centre at Clifford’s Fort and the Exchange Bar and café on Howard St mean that there are now so many reasons to visit the town.

Commentating on the developments Chamber Chair David Bavaird commented ‘ there is a real buzz in the town at the moment as there are so many positive things happening to make North Shields a great place to live, work and visit. These developments are also important from a financial point of view as they generate economic activity, create employment and encourage further investment in our town’

A BUSY AUTUMN AT THE BEACON CENTRE

For the majority of individuals, shopping is a way of relaxing and socialising. However, for people with sensory processing conditions (such as dementia and autism), a visit to a shopping centre, can be just the opposite. Piped music and noisy tannoy announcements can lead to sensory overload, meaning that shopping centres can become confusing, intimidating and frightening places. With this in mind, on the first Sunday of each month, The Beacon Centre have introduced Sensory Sunday, where retailers turn off their music and only use their tannoys for emergencies. Following on from the Centre’s successful Summer Mini Play Den, which was a free soft play area complete with interactive toys and a sensory room, the centre’s next adventure in partnership with local business The Family Hub, is their ‘Discovery Garden’. Open weekdays from Monday 2nd October to Friday 3rd November, the space will be home to a fantastic marquee, which will not only provide a baby area with rugs, cushions and baby sensory toys, but it will also be home for Gus the caterpillar, as well as climbing toys and slides. Admission is FREE and opening times are between 10am-2pm (Mon-Fri). In October, Halloween fever takes over the centre between Monday 23rd and Friday 27th October, as they invite younger visitors to join them for a whole host of ghoulish events, delivered by local businesses including ARTventure, Little Learners and Sing and Sign. Activities will be FREE and run between 10am-2pm. The Halloween fun continues on Saturday 28th October, with pumpkin carving, and Halloween makeovers - provided by a fiendish face painter. Plus don’t forget to look out for spooktacular Halloween characters who will be joining in the fun. Also, for the first time ever, as part of the Halloween celebrations, the centre will be offering a whole host of Ultra-violet visual delights, as the marquee is transformed into a witches cavern, which children of all ages can enjoy under the cover of darkness! For further information on the centre’s events visit www.thebeaconcentre.co.uk

#ONENORTHSHIELDS

The Chamber are pleased to report the increased use of social media through Facebook and Twitter with so many people now using these sites to find out about so many of the good things and events which are happening in North Shields. So if there is something you want to promote or if you want to find out what is going on in North Shields please visit the sites which can be found at www.facebook.com/OneNorthShields and www.twitter. com/NorthShieldsCOC .

CAMRA LIST THE EXCHANGE CAFÉ AND BAR

Chamber members The Exchange Café Bar, part of North Shields cultural arts venue The Exchange, is featured alongside the best drinking holes in the country in the guide, produced by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). The Exchange, on Howard Street, was reopened as a cultural arts venue in January 2016 and has since featured hundreds of artists, musicians, poets, singers, groups and plays in its 300-capacity auditorium and the bar itself. During that time the bar has stocked almost 200 beers and helped boost the local economy, with ALL kegs coming from local breweries. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 28

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

LIFESTYLE

IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD, WHEN ALL AROUND ARE LOSING THEIRS... Irene Anderson, founder of The Happiness Company, gives her advice on how to stay calm and in control when the going gets tough...

R

udyard Kipling wrote those words in his poem IF. It seems very pertinent at the moment. The world seems to be in chaos. Our news features tell us of natural disasters, hurricanes and earthquakes. We have wars raging and politicians posturing.

Is it possible to keep our heads when all around are losing theirs? How can we stay calm and avoid a knee jerk reaction of fear, anxiety and helplessness when things seem to be out of our control? Of course this doesn’t just apply to world events but also to our everyday life. How do we deal with difficult situations that seem to be out of our control i.e. an awkward work colleague, a difficult family relationship, illness?

THE SCIENCE BIT The first thing that happens when we face situations like these is our lizard brain (the bit that is meant to warn us of danger and get us ready for fight or flight) goes into overdrive flooding our body with stress hormones. Useful if we have to run from a Sabre Toothed Tiger but not helpful when faced with modern dilemmas because when we are in panic fight or flight mode, our heart rate goes up, breathing becomes shallow and we can`t think straight. WHAT CAN WE DO? • Firstly, calm the Lizard brain. Concentrate on your breathing. Take long, slow, deep breaths. Count in 1234, out 1234. Do this at least 3 times. • Focus on all the things in your life for which you are grateful. Even things like the bed you sleep in, your morning tea or coffee, Be aware of all the things that are GOOD in your life. 36

Send out goodwill. Be specific start with people you love then those who a neutral to you then those you don’t like or who are difficult. (I send loving kindness to...) • Visualise in your mind’s eye the difficult situations or people being better. Imagine things sorting themselves out. See yourself being able to deal with everything that comes to you during the day. • Use a mantra ‘Everything is working out well, I am strong and capable of dealing with all situations that come my way, all is well.’ Like everything this gets easier with practice. If you feel yourself slipping back into panic mode, take a break and re focus on the steps above. •

SECONDLY, TAKE SOME ACTION • Whilst some things may be out of your control, there are many things that you can control. Taking action, even if it has nothing to do with the situation, immediately shifts you from helpless victim to powerful mode. • Think of what action you can take. Could you make healthier food choices, move your body more, learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, get to bed at a decent time, wake up a little earlier and spend 5 minutes breathing deeply and focussing on seeing the day ahead working out well for you. • Every little change you make has a ripple effect. As YOU change, the situations around you change. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself If you want some further help, log on to our website the happinesscompany.co.uk for a powerful morning meditation. Email me at ireneanderson5@hotmail.co.uk

CHARITY ON THE SEARCH FOR DOG-LOVERS IN TYNE & WEAR

GIVE SOMETHING BACK AND MEET SOME LOVEABLE LIFE-CHANGING PUPPIES ALONG THE WAY

earing Dogs for Deaf People - the sole organisation which trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds - is actively recruiting dog lovers who would like to take care of their adorable puppies and dogs in the Tyne & Wear region. The role of a volunteer dog trainer is to look after a gorgeous pup in their own home from 8 weeks old, for around 16 months. Volunteers provide the puppy with skills and obedience training, and take them along to weekly puppy classes and into as many different environments as possible. All volunteers are fully supported by the Charity’s expert dog trainers, who provide guidance every step of the way. Caroline & Terry Roeves, Volunteer Dog Trainers, say: “We have had our first puppy, Daphne, a Show Cocker Spaniel, for over a year now. We have made dozens of new friends from regular dog walks, we are much fitter and enjoy opportunities to socialise Daphne in local libraries, schools, stores, cafes and restaurants. We would definitely recommend volunteering for Hearing Dogs: your life will change for the better from day one!” Puppy Training Instructor, Lucy Parkin adds: “If you 40

TEETH STRAIGHTENING AT SHIREMOOR DENTAL PRACTICE Teeth straightening used to be a slow and painful process, but modern solutions at Shiremoor Dental Practice could have you smiling within months.

I

f you are embarrassed about your teeth that are not straight, or you have large gaps between your teeth, modern orthodontics (teeth straightening) now offers a range of solutions. Also known as discreet or invisible braces, teeth can be straightened and smiles aligned in a matter of months with excellent aesthetic results. Invisible braces are a popular choice with adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months on end. The technology behind invisible orthodontics is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases. Some systems are completely removable, allowing you to take the aligners out when eating or drinking. Other systems have clear brackets and tooth coloured wire,

making them hardly noticeable. All orthodontic treatment requires good oral hygiene habits by the patient and regular visits to the practice for check-ups and adjustments.

How much does it cost?

Compared to other orthodontic treatments Quick Straight Teeth is one of the most cost effective. This is due to the shorter treatment time required. Prices can start from as little as £1399, which includes your brace, your retainer and teeth whitening. For those patients who proceed to treatment we offer competitive prices and also a selection of affordable finance options.

Does it hurt?

As with many orthodontic treatments you may notice some slight discomfort- particularly when initially fitted or tightened. This is completely normal and can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

What sort of aftercare will I need? Before

Fixed Braces 44

After

Removable Braces

It is recommended that you wear a retainer following treatment to stop your teeth from relapsing to their original position. You can have a removable or fixed retainer depending on your personal needs and lifestyle. This can be discussed with our Dentist. LOCAL NEWS OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers experience a taster session at St Mary’s Lighthouse

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS

T

TASTER SESSIONS GIVE A FLAVOUR OF VOLUNTEERING ROLES AVAILABLE IN THE BOROUGH

he tide was low and spirits were high for a volunteering taster session at St Mary’s Lighthouse this summer, as part of North Tyneside VODA’s new STEM Innovation volunteering project.

The project provides volunteering opportunities for people interested in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and is part of the wider Moving on Tyne & Wear programme, which supports people with health barriers into volunteering, training and employment opportunities. To give people a flavour of the type of volunteering roles available, the project has arranged a number of taster sessions, including the recent rocky shore survey day at the North Tyneside landmark, St Mary’s Lighthouse. The session was attended by 14 volunteers, who were given the chance to hear from Lighthouse Education Officer, Sam, about the importance of surveying, some of the fascinating sea life to be found and how to safely find it. Volunteers then took to the rock pools around the lighthouse and were amazed at the variety of sea creatures in the area - fish, crabs, prawns and periwinkles were carefully caught to be looked at and then set back to freedom. The group also completed a survey to find out how many limpets were present on different parts of the island. Volunteer Stephen Wedderburn, who attended the event, said: “I had a brilliant day, it was so interesting. I’m really grateful to the staff at both VODA and the Lighthouse for giving me this opportunity.” Claire Howard, STEM Innovation Volunteer Coordinator, said: “Our taster volunteering days are a great way of engaging people in volunteering opportunities that they may not have considered doing before. We are trying to make STEM roles more accessible and highlight the range

48

of roles people could take part in. There are a number of people from this taster day who would like to go on to volunteer at the lighthouse, which is really great.” The STEM Innovation project is one of several new programmes recently launched by North Tyneside’s Volunteer Centre, aimed at giving a wide range of people new and exciting ways to volunteer in the borough. “There are so many benefits to volunteering,” said Volunteer Centre Manager, Robin Fry. “Giving your time to help a cause or an area you care about is a great way to meet new people, develop your skills and take on a new challenge. We want to make sure that there are opportunities to suit people of all ages and from all walks of life, and these new projects definitely offer some great chances to get involved in your local community, no matter what your background.” A second project, the Friends of North Tyneside, is a 12-week volunteering programme aimed at people aged 50 and over. Robin continued: “We know that a lot of people in this age group find themselves with some spare time to give, and this is a great way of doing that for a good cause. By volunteering 12 hours a week for three months, those taking part can make a really big difference and help North Tyneside to be an even better place to live for children, young people, older residents and those in need.” And extending VODA’s current offer of supporting people with mental health and other long-term conditions to take part in volunteering is SAINT (Social Action in North Tyneside). This project brings people who have similar interests together – such as arts and crafts, gardening or technology – and helps them to set up and sustain their own social action projects in the local community. For more information visit www.voda.org.uk or call the Volunteer Centre on 0191 643 2639.

TRAVEL

SEASONAL ADVENTURES IF YOU FANCY A TRIP AWAY TO GET YOU IN THE MOOD FOR CHRISTMAS, HERE ARE A SELECTION OF SOME OF THE BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS ACROSS THE UK.

WINCHESTER

20 November –22 December Set in the Inner Close of the city's great Norman cathedral, with an ice rink at its heart, this market is a charmingly festive spectacle - no wonder people come from all corners of Britain to shop here. The wooden stalls sell a great selection of presents, including decorations, jewellery, paintings and prints, bags, hats and children's toys. And, just beyond the Close, there is more excellent shopping in The Square and Parchment street. If the usual Christmas market fare of mulled 52

wine, bratwurst, mince pies and stollen isn't to your taste, Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have restaurants in the city too (rickstein.com andrivercottage.net), or wander down the sideroads and alleys of the compact city centre to find attractive cafes and teashops. And to remind yourself of the spiritual side of Christmas, slip into the cathedral to hear the cherubic choristers sing choral evensong. www.christmasmarkets.com/UK/ winchester-christmas-market.html CONTINUED ON PAGE 54

LINCOLN

7 - 10 December You'll need to get your skates on if you want to visit Lincoln's market, as it's held over just four days this year, opening at noon on Thursday December 7. Lincoln brought the first traditional German Christmas market to the UK in 1982 as part of its twinning with the German town of Neustadt. Originally there were just 11 stalls in Castle Square, which have now multiplied to more than 280, selling a wide range of craft and food products and set around the city's lovely cathedral and castle. 23 November – 10 December Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Abbey and the Pump Room, Bath Christmas Market fills the elegant Georgian streets. LOCAL NEWS

COBALT PEDESTRIAN & CYCLIST IMPROVEMENT PLAN COMPLETE

A

£650,000 scheme to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists around Cobalt Park has been completed.

The project included upgrades to off-road cycling and walking routes, new crossing facilities and improved street lighting. It was delivered for North Tyneside Council by its partner Capita and supported by Cobalt Park’s More team, who run a number of initiatives to encourage sustainable travel. The project also delivers on the council’s Transport Strategy, which was agreed by Cabinet earlier this year. The project, which began earlier this year, included: • A new shared use cycleway/footpath from Benton Road to Silverlink North, near Cobalt Hospital, including new street lighting plus a larger refuge island on Silverlink North. • A new shared use cycleway/footpath from West Allotment to Quick Silver Way connecting to the recently-completed cycleway linking West Allotment and Holystone Interchange. The existing street lighting provision was also improved. • Parallel pedestrian/cycle crossings on all four arms of the Cobalt Park Way/Silver Fox Way Roundabout and the introduction of a new bus lay-by just south of the roundabout More than 14,000 people work at Cobalt Park. The proportion of residents who cycle to work in North Tyneside increased by 20 per cent in the 10 years to 2011, while cycling in the borough has trebled in the past decade. Cllr John Harrison, cabinet member for Housing and

58

Transport, said: “Here in North Tyneside more residents are cycling to work than ever before. “We already have an extensive network of public rights of way and traffic-free paths but are working hard to further improve our infrastructure across the borough. “The provision of high quality, safe cycling and walking links between Cobalt and local residential areas will provide a viable alternative choice of travel to work for local residents.” Capita’s North Tyneside Partnership Director Richard Carmichael said: “The completion of these improvements is great news for users of Cobalt Park. “Capita worked with the council at every stage of this project, from developing the funding bid right through to design and construction. Lynn Cramman, Business Development Manager at Cobalt Park, added: "We deliver a unique package of active travel incentives for staff working on site. The hub has seen over 500 people visit in the last year, with the successful bike loan scheme loaning 15 bikes a month to staff who are trying cycling to work for the first time. "Campaigns target workers who live within a five mile radius of the park, which is easily achievable on a bike, and North Tyneside Council's infrastructure improvements make accessing the park easier than ever before. Meanwhile, the £5.1million A19/A191 Holystone Interchange Improvement Scheme is due for completion in spring 2018. The overall aim of the project, being delivered for the council by Capita, is to reduce delays, improve public transport journey times, increase safety and support the continued occupation of the business park.
