NORTH SHIELDS CARNEGIE TWIN TOWNS The Chamber are delighted to report that North Shields has been selected as one of the towns to go forward for the Phase 2 of the Carnegie Twin Towns project with North Shields twinned with Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. The project is designed to allow towns to work together to share best practices, to improve economic activity in the town, to create employment and to encourage visitors to the town. The original project saw dozens of towns apply to be part of the project with 10 selected to take part in Phase 1 and only 6 towns being selected for Phase 2 following completion of Phase 1. Commentating on the award Chamber Chair David Bavaird stated ‘we are delighted that North Shields has been selected to take part in the final phase of the Carnegie twin Towns Project as it helps to promote North Shields. During Phase 1 what impressed Carnegie most was the strong working relationship which we enjoy in North Shields between the business community, the local authority, voluntary groups and schools and colleges and we look forward to working with all of these groups during Phase 2 for the benefit of our whole community’.

TOPS TIPS TO GET YOUR HOME LOOKING

BrightFOR&CHRISTMAS Beautiful By Helen Ross

W

ith Christmas just around the corner, the thought of getting your home ready for the festivities and overnight guests can be overwhelming, especially when you are already thinking about what present to buy for Aunty Mabel and what food to serve to your brother’s vegan girlfriend.

One of the many things that my housekeeping team hears from our clients is how wonderful they feel coming home to their clean, tidy and beautiful smelling homes. So, to help you to stay relaxed and to create a warm and welcoming environment for all your family and friends this festive season, I’ve created a cleaning countdown to Christmas for you to follow.

MID DECEMBER • Walk through your home with a visitor’s eye to identify •

all the things that need cleaning, smartening up or fixing: make a list of any of these jobs. Declutter. This is especially important if you have children as a tide of new toys and presents will be coming your way on Christmas morning. It’s probably a good time to go through their current toys and donate some to charity. The same can also be said for other rooms throughout the house.

A WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS • Tackle the bigger jobs first, especially those that are

• •

unlikely to need to be done again before Christmas Day such as cleaning the windows, washing the skirting boards, washing and ironing bed linen for guest rooms, vacuuming the sofa, washing out the fridge to make way for party food etc. Deep clean the bathroom; including the tops of cabinets and inside of cabinets, you’ll be surprised how many guests will take a nosey! Deep clean the kitchen, doing the jobs you don’t tend to do on a daily basis such as washing

cupboard fronts, fronts of appliances, inside the microwave and the bin. Sort out the coat cupboard and store away items that are not worn very often in order to make way for guests coats.

CHRISTMAS EVE • Time to do the jobs in the areas that you hope •

won’t get too messy before the big day such as vacuuming and mopping floors, plumping up sofa cushions, giving the bathroom a quick once over and polishing mirrors. Hang fresh hand towels and put out new hand soap in the toilets.

CHRISTMAS DAY • Empty the bins and put in fresh bin bags. • Spot check bathrooms, kitchen and floors for marks • Plump up the sofa cushions (again!) • Carry a laundry basket around your home and pick •

up clutter and either put the things back where they should be or just hide the basket! Finally, as guests arrive, pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz, enjoy the day with family and friends and make sure someone else takes care of the washing up!

Helen Ross is owner of Bright and Beautiful North Tyneside, a professional domestic housekeeping company, providing eco-friendly cleaning, tidying, laundry and ironing; with carefully selected professional cleaners working to the highest standards of security and service. If you don’t have time to follow Helen’s tips above give her a call for a one-off clean on 0191 731 4973 or check out www.brightandbeautifulhome.com/north-tyneside 16

utter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.

Axa, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year, and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home. Local GutterPRO expert Larry Thompson says “Contrary to popular belief, moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds & grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Larry says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.” Recently, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removes black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal. Larry continues “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agents photos.” GutterPRO has had many five-star Facebook reviews. GutterPRO can be reached on 0191 6540035 or visit the website GutterPRO.co.uk. Is it time you took a closer interest in your gutters before the winter?

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

COMMUNITY NEWS

‘FRIENDS OF NORTH TYNESIDE’

ARE MAKING A BIG IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

N

orth Tyneside’s Volunteering Centre is looking for local people aged 50 and over to get involved in a shortterm volunteering project to really make a difference in their local community.

Friends of North Tyneside is a 12-week programme which offers volunteers the chance to use their skills and experiences working in teams to benefit either pre-school children, young adults or older and isolated residents in the borough. By volunteering two days a week for three months, participants join fellow volunteers to plan and deliver a range of sessions and activities that will have a positive impact on people in the local area. The project launched in September and currently has two projects underway. Volunteers on the Pathways to Employment project are working with young people to get them more prepared for work by supporting them with CV building, interview skills and attending a range of creative and enterprise workshops, while the Making Christmas Special 44

volunteers are running a series of visits and events to help older and isolated residents feel special over the holiday period. As well as making Christmas crafts and collecting donations of gifts, the team are encouraging residents who may be alone on Christmas Day to come along to one of four community centres in the borough and enjoy Christmas lunch with others. VODA’s Volunteer Centre Manager, Ian Dodds, explains more about the project: “There are so many benefits to taking part in a volunteering programme such as this. It’s not a long-term commitment, it’s a time-limited project and the volunteers will get to see the real results of their participation at the end of their projects. Plus it’s a fantastic way to meet new people, take on new challenges and have some fun! We know that people in this age bracket have a lot to give in terms of their skills, experience and knowledge. We want to really harness that and put it to good use to help solve issues in the community such as social isolation and getting young people ready for work.” The next Friends of North Tyneside programme

“I live in sheltered accommodation and saw the Friends of North Tyneside programme advertised on a poster in the laundry room. I wasn’t sure at first but my granddaughter persuaded me to give it a go and I’m glad she did. I lost my husband three years ago and most of my family live away from the North East now so I found myself with some time on my hands. I also liked the idea of meeting new people and doing something caring – I cared for my husband so that comes naturally to me. Although I was apprehensive when I first came along, everybody here – the staff and other volunteers – are so friendly I felt comfortable in no time at all. I love crafts – I’m always knitting – so the Making Christmas Special project really appealed to me. It’s been great fun so far, we’ve made sock snowmen and peg angels and we visited a nursing home in Wallsend to chat to some of the residents about their memories of Christmas recently – that was a lovely thing to do. I’m really enjoying the programme and I’ll actually be sorry when it finishes.”

Lilian Atkins from North Shields is thoroughly enjoying the programme, having joined the Making Christmas Special team in October.

A volunteer on the Pathways to Employment project, Steve Snowdon, also from North Shields, describes why he got involved: “I worked in banking for over 40 years and recently took early retirement. I knew I wanted to do something but wasn’t sure I could commit to anything longterm so the Friends of North Tyneside really appealed to me being a 12 week programme. I saw an advert for the project in a local magazine and thought ‘why not?’ so I got in touch. I was really keen on helping young people get in to employment and using my own skills and experience to ‘give something back’ – but actually it’s much more than just helping with job searches. A lot of the young people we’ve worked with have experienced difficulties and barriers and that’s been a real eye-opener. As a team we’ve helped them to build their confidence, develop life skills and join in with tasks they might never have otherwise. I’ve built a strong relationship with one young person in particular – she struggled with public transport so now we travel in together and I support her with that and other aspects of the programme. This is definitely a rewarding scheme to be involved in – we can really see the positive difference we’re making to people’s lives and I’d recommend it to anyone looking to volunteer in the New Year.”

There are so many benefits to taking part in a volunteering programme such as this. It’s not a long-term commitment and the volunteers will get to see the real results of their participation at the end of their projects

begins in January 2018 with a fun and interactive taster session taking place mid-January at the Cedarwood Trust in North Shields to give anyone interested in taking part more information about the project and have a go at some of the activities they might be involved in. For more information on dates or to register an interest in becoming a Friend of North Tyneside, contact VODA on 0191 643 2626 or email josie.robinson@voda.org.uk. 45

BOWLS CLUB IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE ON THROUGHOUT THE WINTER

C

ollingwood Bowling Club’s mission is to provide a superb outdoor bowling green with excellent facilities to bring the community into the game of bowls.

The summer season ended in mid-September with the club hosting a very successful friendly versus a Scottish under 25s representative team. The weather wasn’t particularly kind but a good time was held by all in between the showers and during the after-game buffet. Next summer season, Collingwood Bowling Club will look to host many more of these types of games which give an ideal opportunity for newer members to sample a friendly level of competitive team bowls. Although the summer outdoor playing season is at an end, the progressive work to improve the quality of the playing surface continues on throughout the winter months. The Club started in November 2014 with a totally neglected park and through the endeavours of its members have transformed it back to life. The green has been dramatically improved but work is still underway to bring it to a very high standard. The other work being progressed at the moment is to gain the necessary Council permissions to extend and improve the club pavilion, plus gain the vital funding to

finance the project. The Club are at a critical stage in this project and would hope to have full success with both the permissions and the funding well before next summer. The club continues to meet throughout the winter months to keep in touch with members and any interested guests by holding fundraising coffee mornings on the last Saturday of every month (excepting December) from 11.00am to 12.30pm at the club pavilion. If you are interested in taking up bowls, please feel free to come along to one of the winter coffee mornings - you’ll be made most welcome. They set to design a collection which was contemporary, stylish with an everyday feel, and perfect for the modern woman who wants a nod to fashion in a carefree way. MV call

Hand picking the softest yarns, cosiest cuts and most tactile textures, the Hygge collection will give you a relaxing and much deserved hug, and is worth staying in, and snuggled up, for. The brand has also included a curated edit of other brands to complement the different elements that the collection follows – Hygge REVIVE, Hygge RELAX, and Hygge HOME. This includes handcrafted body brushes from Iris Hantverk, bath products by L.A Bruket, Cashmere and Wool care products by The Laundress and Christmas spice chocolate by the Coco Chocolatier. Their latest collection, Wilderness, is Scandi and Nordic log-cabin weekend-chic at its finest!
