NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE NORTH SHIELDS TWIN TOWNS UPDATE As part of North Shields being successfully selected as one of the few towns to be picked to take part in the Carnegie Twin Towns Project, the Chamber have initiated some changes to their structure to help with the delivery of a number of projects which are designed to boost business, to create employment and to encourage visitors to the town. David Bavaird, who has been the Chair for the past eight years and who has greatly helped to grow both the Chamber’s membership and influence, has stood down as the Chair so that he can work on a number of projects, mainly through his company Engaging Pathways CIC; one of those projects is to develop further, on behalf of the Chamber, the plans agreed with Carnegie. David is to be replaced as the Chair, on an interim basis, by Miles Walton who has been the Chamber Secretary for a number of years; a small executive committee has also be set up. The Chamber now plans to look at what is the most appropriate organisational structure for the Chamber going forward and it will continue to help to deliver a number of projects for North Shields. Commentating on his appointment, Miles stated ‘I am delighted to take over the Chair position at this exciting time for North Shields and the Chamber and I would like to thank David for all of his hard work over many years; I am pleased 6

that he will still be an active member of the Chamber as he has a wealth of experience which we will continue to benefit from. We also look forward to working with Engaging Pathways on projects which are designed to help to make North Shields a great place to live, work and visit’.

VOLUNTEER FAIR North Shields Customer First Centre was the venue for a New Year Volunteer Recruitment Fair, organised by North Tyneside VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency) recently. The Fair offered local people the chance to find out about the range of volunteering opportunities available in the borough and is a regular fixture on the calendar of North Tyneside’s Volunteer Centre, which supports people to find meaningful volunteering roles to suit their interests and availability. Featuring staff and information stalls from over 20 local charities and community groups that all involve volunteers in their work, the Fair was a lively and well-attended event with more than 60 potential volunteers in attendance. VODA’s Kim Rackstraw, who organises the event, said: “This was a very successful fair, with lots of introductions made between people who want to volunteer their time and make a positive difference, and the organisations and groups who offer them the opportunity to do that. We’re always blown away by the generosity of people in North Tyneside when it comes to

giving their time for a good cause, and are happy to be able to introduce them to the charities and groups that often rely on the support of volunteers. Plans are already underway for the next Recruitment Fair and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever!” VODA’s next Volunteer Recruitment Fair will take place later in the year. For more information about volunteering in North Tyneside, visit www.voda.org.uk or telephone 0191 643 2626.

YMCA DAY NURSERY OPENS IN NORTH SHIELDS

I

n an exciting development for North Shields town centre, YMCA are proud to announce the opening of their first Day Nursery for young children.

Formerly the site of HSBC bank, they have fundraised £465,000 to transform the building opposite their main facility on Church Way, into a fantastic space for children aged 0 to 5 years old. The nursery got the green light to open on Monday 8th January, after achieving Ofsted Registered status just before Christmas. Rachel Danielson, Manager of YMCA Day Nursery, is delighted that recruitment is already ahead of expectations: “We have the capacity for up to 65 babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers on site. We’re so excited that more than a dozen parents and carers have already chosen to place their children in our care. A lot of time and energy went into designing the facility so that all 3 ages groups would have the very best nursery experience. I can’t wait to see all the rooms and outside play area buzzing with activity”. Dean Titterton, CEO for YMCA North Tyneside adds: “YMCA is all about young people, so we’re delighted that we can now help the very youngest local children to develop and thrive. 14

Our dedicated team of childcare professionals are committed to developing confidence and creativity within each and every child, fostering a sense of individuality and developing a strong sense of community. Through our approach, we hope to give every child the best chance of reaching their potential.” YMCA Day Nursery is just a couple of minutes from bus and metro links in North Shields and is readily accessible by car. It boasts separate rooms for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, as well as an extensive outdoor play area and an

WHAT IS REIKI? You may have heard of Reiki, but do you know what it can do for you? Dawn Wilson visited Heaven & Earth in Bedlington to find out more.

D

eveloped in the early 20th Century, Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a safe and soothing Japanese complimentary therapy, but can seem mysterious to those experiencing it for the first time.

Having never had a Reiki treatment myself, I booked in for a session with Lindsey Foley, a Reiki Master Teacher at Heaven and Earth, just off the front street in Bedlington to find out more. The Japanese word Reiki means universal energy. Eastern medicine systems work with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. Reiki is best described as hands on healing, used as a well-being treatment, in which a Reiki practitioner aims to change and balance the energy fields in and around your body to help on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level. Before the treatment, Lindsey discussed with me what Reiki is and how it works and then invited me to lie down on the bed in the beautiful treatment room. You don’t have to get undressed for the treatment, I was fully clothed, covered with a blanket and with the lights dimmed. Soft music was played to create a sense of calm. Both warm and professional, Lindsey created a safe and serene environment making it easy to let go and relax into the treatment. Lindsey began by putting her hands gently on my head. Within minutes, my restless mind was stilled. She then worked her way down towards my feet by placing her hands on non-intrusive parts of my body. Everyone has a different sensation during the treatment, all depending upon what they need from the treatment. I felt incredibly tranquil and experienced a drifting sensation. You might feel a tingling sensation, a deep relaxation, or warmth or coolness throughout your body. Or, you might not feel anything at all. Practitioners say this doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. My treatment lasted for around an hour. I felt deeply relaxed afterwards and very calm, akin to a really good night’s sleep. If you are open to the theory, it can be a deeply relaxing experience, and Lindsey explained that it can be particularly helpful with recovery from illness or 16

stress and coping with difficult situations. If you feel you need to take some time out for yourself then you should give Reiki a try. Reiki is completely safe and therefore suitable for pregnant women, children and those with an illness. B

rit Award-winning, English singersongwriter, Paloma Faith, will kick off the festival, organised by North Tyneside Council, at the spectacular Tynemouth Priory and Castle on Thursday 5 July.

Her number one album ‘The Architect’ is currently riding high in the charts, with eight weeks in the top ten and is approaching 250,000 copies sold. And her new album is currently on course to become her fourth double platinum album in a row, which would make her the first British woman in chart history to achieve this. The 2015 Brit Award-winner – who is nominated again this year for Best British Female – will embark on her ‘The Architect Summer Tour’ from June and she plays the Mouth of the Tyne Festival for the first time. Fans will be hoping to hear hits including ‘Stone Cold Sober’, ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’, ‘Crybaby’ and ‘Picking up the Pieces’. North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn said: “We are delighted to announce that worldrenowned artist Paloma Faith will perform in North Tyneside this summer. I know many people will be 18

looking forward to watching her perform her hits in the special and picturesque setting of Tynemouth Priory and Castle. “The Mouth of the Tyne Festival attracts around 100,000 visitors each year, which always provides a huge boost the local economy and increases tourism to the borough. With such a high calibre act confirmed for the festival and more exciting announcements to come, I’m sure this year will be no different.” Tickets priced at £40 plus booking fees, will go on sale from 9am on Friday 2 February at www. seetickets.com and www.ticketmaster.co.uk. The festival, now in its 14th year, has hosted a range of artists including Paul Weller, Elbow, James Bay, The Script, James Morrison and Bryan Ferry. Further announcements about artists performing at the Priory throughout the weekend will be released soon. The festival will also feature a free programme of events including international street entertainment, live jazz music and a children’s pageant. PAINFUL

JOURNEYS With your help, Age UK can ensure hospital transport really works and older people are given the care and support they need.

F

or most of us just having a hospital appointment is enough to worry about, but imagine having to make a long and complicated journey alone, in pain and feeling anxious about not getting there in time. This isn’t good enough, but it doesn’t have to be like this.

Through Age UK North Tyneside’s Painful Journeys campaign, they are calling on people to write to their MP about the difficulties they have faced when travelling to hospital appointments. The Charity’s new report Painful Journeys highlights three key issues facing older people and their families when trying to get to and from their hospital appointments: 1. Long and uncomfortable public transport journeys to and from hospital. Many older people have no option but to rely on public transport to get to their hospital appointments, which can mean difficult and uncomfortable journeys, sometimes involving two or three changes of buses. Around 1 in 4 (25%) of all the 22

bus journeys taken by people aged 65+ are for medical appointments , yet many struggle with inaccessible or irregular bus services. 2. Hospital-provided patient transport is of patchy quality and a postcode lottery. Overstretched, poorly co-ordinated services in many areas mean that despite feeling very unwell, older people are picked up hours before their appointment and left waiting alone for hours until they are picked up for their return journey. Patients are often unable to travel with a companion which can be very distressing for them, particularly if they are in a wheelchair or have dementia.

Many older people are reliant on family or friends to drive them to hospital, which can have a significant impact if people have to take time off work, and hospital car parking can be pricey

3. Significant extra costs for older people and their families. Many older people are reliant on family or friends to drive them to hospital, which can have a significant impact if people have to take time off work, and hospital car parking can be pricey. Alternatively some older people have to pay for private taxis, often with drivers who are not trained to deal with people with health or mobility issues. For patients in wheelchairs, specialist vehicles need to be hired for each journey, sometimes at high cost. For more information you can visit www.ageuk.org.uk/ painfuljourneys, or to provide any feedback or comments about individual experiences please contact Age UK North Tyneside on 0191 2808484 (option 1).

So, it’s important to look after them properly and our Bright & Beautiful professional housekeepers do this in two ways – by using the very best natural products and by following a meticulous cleaning process.

CREATING A SANCTUARY

Helen says: “We make each client’s home feel like a welcoming and soothing place to be, from the minute they walk through the door. To achieve that we use high quality, eco-friendly products that clean effectively, give a luxury finish and smell beautiful. Our attention to detail is meticulous – from hotel standard bed making to getting windows gleaming and streak free.”

DE-CLUTTER AND DE-STRESS

Helen says: “It’s been proven that clutter and mess around our homes can make us feel unwell and unhappy. Just as we detox our bodies, so we work with our clients to bring order to chaos, tidying and cleaning their homes,

and taking care of the ironing. For me a tidy house and a tidy mind definitely go together!”

CHERISHING YOUR HOME

We are seeing a real resurgence in the popularity of wood in the home, from antiques and mid-century classics to modern collectibles and they are wonderful pieces to reflect your taste and style . Wood is a naturally porous material that allows more dust and moisture in. So for older wood we always use an oil based cleaner, usually almond oil, instead of wax to care for wood pieces. Oil loosens the dirt as well as bringing out the natural sheen and keeps the wood looking good for years to come.

SHINE BRIGHT

The popularity of glass and mirrored furniture in our homes has presented a whole range of new cleaning issues! Just like glossy kitchens, they look fantastic but one fingerprint or smear and the effect is ruined. The key is to use products that really suit the surfaces so for glass in particular, we like to use a white vinegar based cleaner – a natural and very effective product.

RELAX AND UNWIND

The secret to Helen’s success is that her clients can relax, knowing that their Bright & Beautiful housekeeping team treat their homes with the utmost respect, operate the highest standards of security and are fully insured. So why not take a leaf out of their book and let someone else look after your home so you can look after yourself?

Bright & Beautiful is an award winning domestic housekeeping service that delivers the highest standards of cleaning, tidying, ironing and laundry. INTRODUCING

STAIRLUX BY WESTLINE W

ith over 30 years professional experience, Westline are a family run company who designs, manufactures and fits custommade luxury stairs and beautiful balconies along with balustrades. Westline know that a unique, made-to-order, staircase can become the ultimate focal design feature in an attractive home and have introduced the perfect product, StairLux, the next step in staircase design. A high-end, customisable product, StairLux allows customers to become their own designer and create the staircase of their dreams. Experts in their field, Westline works closely with customers, from conception to completion. Using quality materials, customers can choose from steel, oak, stainless steel and glass, to customise staircase treads, frames, balustrades/ balconies and associated products. Westline customer, Judith Donkin, from Rowlands Gill, purchased a StairLux staircase in June 2017. Speaking of her experience, Judith said: “Our previous staircase was made out of mahogany wood and it got to the stage where it was looking old and outdated, so we wanted to modernise it. “I had a picture in my mind as to how I wanted my new staircase to look, having been inspired by the glass staircases you see in retail shops. “I had heard of Westline previously as I used to work in Birtley where Westline are based, and so decided to take a visit to their showroom to see what they had to offer. They had on display a beautiful glass and wooden staircase which was exactly what I had pictured in my head. “After visiting the showroom, one

of Westline’s expert team, Paul, came to our home to measure out the space and discuss our specification. Originally I wanted glass panels with an oak step, but Paul recommended an all glass as he believed this would better suit the modern design I was after. As I hadn’t viewed an all glass staircase, I was invited to look at a previous project, but I had faith in Paul’s expertise and ordered the full glass. I’m glad I did as I absolutely love it! It’s exactly what I wanted. “I don’t know anyone else who has a staircase like mine and when friends and family come to visit they are all wowed. “I would definitely recommend Westline. They are a lovely family run business who were very professional and friendly throughout the whole process. Their customer service was brilliant and they also offered aftercare which was great.”

MCA North Tyneside is calling on local residents to come together and sleep rough for one night in March to support local, homeless young people.

The local youth charity, which has worked in North Shields for more than 120 years, is hosting a Sleep Easy fundraiser in North Shields on Friday 16th March. The event will see participants sleep on the streets of North Shields for an evening, to not only raise money but also awareness of youth homelessness. YMCA North Tyneside is one of several local YMCAs across the country that have joined forces to raise awareness during the national Sleep Easy Week (9 to 16 March).Hundreds of supporters are expected to sleep out all over the country raise funds to help YMCA continue to support residents and young people in its services. This will be YMCA North Tyneside’s 3rd year hosting a Sleep Easy even and they are hoping the raise even more than the £10,000 that they raised last year. Money brought in has helped YMCA North Tyneside, provide more than 36 young people with supported accommodation, a state of the art gym, a community training café, day nursery and many fantastic detached youth work projects. It is hoped that this year’s coordinated fundraising week will help YMCA North Tyneside raise even more funds as the numbers of rough sleepers of all ages continues to rise and pressures mount on the housing market. Dean Titterton, YMCA North Tyneside Chief Executive, said: “YMCAs across the country are holding Sleep Easy events at the same time to raise much needed awareness of the plight of rough sleeping among young people. “Without the support we offer, many more young people would be sleeping on the streets and have less options and less chance of realising their potential. “We are calling on the local community, old and young, to sign up to the YMCA Sleep Easy Week to help us support young people in our services today and into the future. One night out can make a lifetime difference.” To register for the Sleep Easy event with YMCA North Tyneside please go to www.ymcanorthtyneside.org/sleepeasy or email eliza.lawson@ymcanorthtyneside.org

FORGET THE WINTER BLUES WITH A SUMMER

LIFEGUARD JOB!

W

ould you like to spend the summer working on some of Tyne and Wear’s most popular beaches? The RNLI is searching for new recruits and has opened applications for beach lifeguards and face-to-face fundraisers.

Both roles are essential in reducing the number of people who drown on the North East coast, and keep people safe by providing safety advice to holidaymakers. Successful applicants receive first-class training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques. Ben Mitchell, RNLI area lifesaving manager, said: “Working as a lifeguard has got to be one of the best summer jobs - you get to call the beach your office for a start. But, far more importantly than that, you are there to make sure the public enjoy it in the safest possible way. The RNLI provides local summer patrols at Sandhaven, Whitley Bay North and South, Cullercoats, Tynemouth Longsands and King Edward’s Bay amongst other local beaches. Ben said the role is demanding and will require commitment, skill and a clear head. He added: “We’re looking for people with courage, determination and the ability to draw on their training and make the right decision if someone’s life is in danger. It is an incredibly rewarding role.” Face-to-face fundraisers will work alongside lifeguards to provide beach visitors with important safety advice. They will play a vital role in saving lives by educating the public on risks at the coast. Applicants need to be dynamic and act as a positive ambassador - encouraging support for this lifesaving charity is just one of the things the fundraisers will do over the summer. Callum Moffat, RNLI face-to-face fundraising manager, said: “A good fundraiser generally has to be friendly and relaxed, but also energetic, able to talk to anyone and be passionate about what they do. We provide quality training which ensures new fundraisers feel confident and capable in the role.” To apply for one of the roles visit summerjobs.rnli.org or search for #BestSummerJob on Facebook and Twitter. 40

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

‘FRIENDS OF NORTH TYNESIDE’

ARE MAKING A BIG IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

SUPPORT AND TRAINING FOR CHARITIES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS

C

ommunity groups, voluntary organisations and charities are being given the chance to meet face to face with funders at North Tyneside VODA’s Funding Fair on Thursday 15 March.

Taking place at the Linskill Centre in North Shields, the fair will give groups the chance to make appointments with up to four of the region’s top grantmaking trusts and funders, tell them about their projects and work, and receive one-to-one advice about putting in a strong application. Funders who will be in attendance include Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, Greggs Foundation and Big Lottery Fund. Groups are encouraged to read the description of each funder before making an appointment, to ensure that their project or work fits with the funders priorities. The Funding Fair is an annual event held by North Tyneside VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency), a registered charity which provides free and low-cost support, advice and training to the voluntary sector in North Tyneside. Frank Gillender, VODA’s Funding Adviser said: “This is always one of our busiest and most popular events, and it’s easy to see why. The Funding Fair offers community groups and voluntary organisations the rare chance to get face-to-face with some of our region’s top funders, the people who actually make the decision about grant-making. We always get reports of funding successes following these 44

events and now, when competition for grant funding is more fierce than ever, it’s important for groups to be really clear about their work so that funders know the real impact that they’re making on the people and communities they work with.” Places and appointments at the event MUST be booked in advance using VODA’s booking system – see www.voda.org.uk for more information or telephone 0191 643 2626.

Based in North Shields, yourPrintDepartment has been involved in the Sector Connector project for several years now; Rob Gibbons explains how their involvement has changed the way his company does business: “We found that allowing our staff to spend some time helping groups understand what makes an effective publication pays enormous dividends in terms of those groups then being able to give us a clearer brief and achieve their own goals. It also benefits the professional development of our team and enables yourPrintDepartment to play a real part in making the community stronger.” VODA are always keen to hear from local businesses that want to give something back to their community by offering to deliver a workshop or provide advice and support to voluntary and community groups and organisations. Visit the Sector Connector section of VODA’s website to find out how to get involved. WHEN DID YOU LAST HAVE YOUR GUTTERS CLEARED OUT?

G

utter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.

Axa, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year, and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home. Local GutterPRO expert Larry Thompson says “Contrary to popular belief, moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds & grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Larry says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.” Recently, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removes black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal. Larry continues “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agents photos.” GutterPRO has had many five-star Facebook reviews. GutterPRO can be reached on 0191 6540035 or visit the website GutterPRO.co.uk. Is it time you took a closer interest in your gutters before the winter?

SKATE PARK EXTENSION IS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR LOCAL YOUNGSTERS

A

skate park is set to attract even more thrill-seekers as work starts to extend the much-loved facility.

Enjoyed by thousands of young people each year, the North Tyneside Council-owned skate park on Howdon Lane, North Shields, is being extended, with a new area catering specifically for BMX riders and more advanced skateboarders. It was the idea of a group of young people who work with local charity Phoenix Detached Youth Project and made possible thanks to investment from North Tyneside Council and £50,000 of funding from Suez Communities Trust. Speaking about the project, North Tyneside Council’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Bruce Pickard said: “We are delighted to be able to enhance and invest in this popular facility for the benefit of the local community. “I must thank Phoenix Detached Youth Project and the young people it works with – without their ideas, input and enthusiasm this project would not have been possible. I would also like to thank Suez Communities Trust for providing the funding to help us improve the skate park.” Phoenix Detached Youth Project is a charity that works with 13 to 25-year-old in and around the Meadow Well area. Project manager, Mike Burgess said: “This was a dream of the group after visiting Scotland in 2014 with local BMX Bandits from North

Shields, to have our own local challenging BMX Bowl, the Phoenix Bowl. “The group created a design which was presented to councillors and the Elected Mayor, and worked on bids. Without their commitment and support, as well as North Tyneside Council staff working in partnership with local young people, such an amazing facility would not be possible, or funding from SUEZ Communities Trust “I am proud of what local young people have achieved with our support, we never gave up hope after four years of work behind the scenes, dreams do come true, and anything is possible.” A group of young people were on hand at the skate park to mark the start of the work. Carl, aged 24, who is part of local group BMX Bandits, added: “We started a project four years ago and never thought this would happen. We thought it was just a dream. “Luke Johnston from the Phoenix Detached Youth Project has continued to believe in us and we can not thank him and the team enough, for keeping us going. “We can not wait to ride the bowl and support other young people to learn how to ride the bowl, and this is the just start of using an amazing venue to host regular events, this will give young people something exciting and fun to do and will help them take the right path in life.“ The skate park is currently closed as the extension gets underway and will reopen in the spring.

WORK STARTS ON NEW NORTHUMBERLAND COASTAL PATH

W

ork is due to start on the Northumberland stretch of the England Coast Path which is set to become the longest managed and way marked coastal path in the world.

The 2,795 mile route will follow the coastline of England and Wales and is due to open in 2020. It will pass stunning beaches, castles, fishing villages, famous seaside resorts and dramatic landscape features, offering walkers the opportunity to experience some of the country’s most varied coastline. In Northumberland the coastal path will follow a route from the Scottish Borders right down the coastline via Berwick and Bamburgh to Seaton Sluice. Northumberland County Council will carry out the work to establish the path and will be responsible for its ongoing maintenance. Natural England will fund the establishment of the route and 75 per cent of the ongoing maintenance costs. Work on the first section of the route between Seaton Sluice and Amble is to commence over the coming weeks. An initial grant of £149,250 has been awarded to Northumberland County Council by Natural England to cover these costs. Northumberland County Councillor Glen Sanderson Cabinet Member for the environment and local services said: “ This new path will be a great addition to those who already know our superb coastline but it will open up new opportunities for visitors who want to explore the wonderful assets we have in

62

our county. Additionally the path will help draw in visitors all year round and help provide a boost to local businesses along its length.” The new route will, where possible, link into the existing Northumberland Coastal Path, but sections will need to be added to allow it to directly follow the coastline of the county. The Seaton Sluice to Amble stretch of the route has already been agreed by the Secretary of State and was proposed by Natural England following extensive research and consultation with landowners and Northumberland County Council. It will follow existing pathways on council land and recorded highways and footways and so only minor work such as the installation of gates and signage is needed.

The 2,795 mile route will follow the coastline of England and Wales and is due to open in 2020.

Work is ongoing with the planning of other sections of the route in the county. New stretches of grass pathway will need to be created between Newbiggin and Lynemouth and between Cresswell and Druridge. A further two sections of the Northumberland route - Amble to Bamburgh and Bamburgh to the Scottish Borders, are still in the research and consultation phase. www.northumberlandcoastpath.org
