LOCAL NEWS

NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE TOM HADAWAY COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE UNVEILED North Tyneside Council staged a Blue Plaque unveiling event for the author and playwright Tom Hadaway at his birthplace in North Shields on what would have been his 95th birthday with the Blue Plaque unveiled by Tim Healy star of Benidorm and Auf Weidersehen Pet and attended by the Hadaway Family. Tom Hadaway was well known nationally for the television play God Bless Thee Jackie Maddison in 1974 and he also wrote for the first series of When the Boat Comes In in 1976. He died on 3 March 2005.The event took place on Sunday 18 March at 6 Howdon Road in North Shields followed by a celebratory event at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre where guests enjoyed a performance of Tom Hadaway’s play The Filleting Machine by local company Blowin’ a Hooley Theatre. David Young, a Trustee at the Old Low Light, said: “We were honoured to be invited to hold the event at the oldest inhabited building on the Fish Quay. “The Fish Quay has been at the heart of North Shields life for over 900 years and the Old Low Light as a charity has a principal aim to celebrate the culture and heritage of the Fish Quay and North Shields - a story that could not be told without the inclusion of Tom Hadaway, a central character, and who we have featured in many of our previous exhibitions and events’.” 6

TWIN TOWN UPDATE The Chamber continue to work with their partners from the Carnegie UK Trust and Merthyr Tydfil to develop plans to encourage increasing investment and visitors to the town as a part of the Twin Towns Project. Only six towns across the whole of the UK were selected to take part in Stage 2 of the project after North Shields demonstrated in Stage 1 the close working relationship between the business community, local authority, third sector organisations and schools in North Shields. Phase 2 involves the Chamber looking at the possibility of establishing a weekly market in the town and how social media can be used to encourage visitors to the town. Commentating on the work David Bavaird from the Chamber commentated ‘we are delighted to be selected as one of the few towns to take part in this important project which has already provided us with a range of ideas on how we can develop North Shields for the benefit of residents, visitors and businesses in the town.’

BUILDING WORK COMMENCES AT NORTHUMBERLAND SQUARE WORK to redevelop historic buildings in North Shields is gathering pace following the demolition of 1950s office extensions in Northumberland Square, with North Tyneside Council preparing to start work on a £5.6m project to

transform listed Georgian buildings at Northumberland Square as part of its regeneration plans for the town. The scheme will see the delivery of 28 homes consisting of new builds and refurbishments,.with the completion of the work to remove the 1950s extensions at the rear of the properties, between Upper Camden Street and Albion Road. This will allow the properties to be restored to their original condition. Work will continue on the site for a number of weeks with construction of the new scheme expected to start towards the end of the summer 2018. Commentating on developments David Hodgson form the Chamber commented ‘ Northumberland Square is an important local landmark in a conversation area and with architecture which only exists in a handful of towns and these developments are further example of the investment in our town’.

FOOD FESTIVAL RETURNS TO NORTH SHIELDS

The Chamber are delighted to welcome the return of The Proper Food and Drink Festival to North Shields on the 5th, 6th and 7th of May with the event planned to coincide with the first Bank Holiday in May, with this year’s event promising to be bigger and better than ever. The North Shields event is set in Northumberland Square and is now a well-established event with over sixty stalls offering visitors a range of the finest food and drink in the region with a range of varied entertainment available throughout the weekend. Commentating on this year’s event Miles Walton Chair of the Chamber said ‘we are delighted to welcome back the Proper Food and Drink Festival to North Shields building on the success of previous years as the festival always sees a significant increase in footfall in the town and allows both residents and visitors to see first– hand the developments in the town ’.www.properfoodanddrinkfestivals.co.uk

BEACON CENTRE WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY

This May the Beacon Centre will be unveiling the latest exhibition entitled ‘Movement’, created by students enrolled on the College’s Foundation Degree in Applied Fine Art Practice. The works, which are to be displayed in the main square of the Shopping Centre, will provide customers with a vivid display of artistic enjoyment and will certainly enhance the Northumberland Square entrance to the Centre. The students will act as ambassadors for TyneMet College at the exhibition launch, as they will be offering interactive taster sessions to engage visitors of all ages with the artwork they have created. Centre Manager, David Menzies commented: “The Beacon Centre takes pride in being able to provide young artists with a platform to display their work, as well as display their talent and skills to the community of North Shields.” This year also sees the Centre continuing its support in sponsoring the North Shields Juniors under 11’s Girls Football team. The team, which has played together for two seasons has already seen the results of their dedication and commitment, as in their first season they won their League and Cup. To find out more about the team and how they are doing visit the Centre’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/ beaconcentrenorthshields. 90 BRAND NEW HOMES UNVEILED FOR SALE AT SMITH’S DOCK

P

laces for People and Urban Splash, the joint venture redeveloping Smith’s Dock in North Shields, have revealed for the first time their site-wide masterplan vision; it shows the extent of the new Tyneside community, with many of the planned residential and public realm phases visible.

The reveal comes ahead of the creation of 90 new homes at the waterside development, many of which will be launched for sale in March. 80 of the properties will be housed within the waterfront Smokehouses; the two buildings – designed by Simpson Haugh– will comprise a range of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom properties each offering amazing views of the River Tyne and will be ready for occupation from early next year. Prices start from £125,000. Stuart Wheeler of Simpson Haugh said: “It’s incredibly exciting to see Smokehouses take shape, one of the first phases of the Smith’s Dock masterplan we’ve been developing with Places for People since 2009. Inspired by the site’s rich history, and in collaboration with Places for People and Urban Splash, we’re creating unique, light-filled and spacious homes, the quality of which sets a benchmark for the rest of the development of the landmark site.” A further 10 homes will be launched for buyers looking for spacious family homes; known as Fab House, they are designed by North East TV star and architect George Clarke in conjunction with TDO TRANSFORMATION TEAM (L – R): Guy Ackernley of Urban Splash, George Clarke, Mark Latham of Urban Splash and Nigel Brewer of Place for People.

10

Architecture, and stand adjacent to the three-storey Town Houses launched at the scheme late last year. Speaking of the Fab Houses, prices which start from £225,000, George said: “I am thrilled that we can now show buyers around these homes. What we’re creating here are proper family homes that are spacious, well planned and will encourage family living.” Tom Lewith, director, TDO Architecture said: ‘We are delighted to have contributed to this pioneering project. Fab House is the culmination of a rewarding design collaboration with George Clarke and extensive R&D with SIG Off-site. Modular construction has a vital role to play in reaching house building targets and as a young practice we’re excited to be part of this” Added Nigel Brewer of Places for People: “I’ve been involved in this project for many years now and it really is exciting to have reached this stage. It shows just how we’re working to make the whole area make for a wonderful community; it’s an important historic site and its redevelopment is the epitome of true regeneration – with diverse home designs, sensitively designed public spaces and the reopening the stunning waterfront.” Concluded Guy Ackernley, director of residential sales at Urban Splash: “The Smokehouses and Fab Houses bring more options to Smith’s Dock; it’s a demonstration of how varied we want the residential offering to be here and means that we can now offer properties across a much broader price spectrum. “We’ll have some amazing apartments on offer from a great, first time buyer friendly price point,of £125,000 through to the last remaining three-storey family homes on offer in the Town House first phase of the scheme. Help to Buy is available on some homes too too, making these homes an accessible option for local customers.” To register your interest or secure details ahead of the launch, please contact Rose Miller at Sanderson Young on 0191 580 7999 or email rosemarymiller@smithsdock.co.uk.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE PURE SHORES: Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’

Magical

MAURITIUS Hays personal travel consultant, Brittany Harrison (pictured left), is passionate about travel and enjoys passing on her recommendations to potential customers. Here she shares her own experience of a visit to the beautiful island nation of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean.

14

M

auritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, best known for its beautiful powder white beaches, turquoise waters and luxury resorts.

Whether you like to chill out on the beach or take on a more active holiday, there is something for everyone in Mauritius. Over 100,000 British tourists visit the island every year. If you are a citizen of the EU, USA, Australia, Canada and a number of other countries you won’t need a visa, initial entry is granted for 3 months. There is only one airport on the island, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. You can fly direct from London Heathrow with Air Mauritius or British Airways. Connecting flights from regional airports are also available. A direct flight from London Heathrow takes approximately 12 hours. Mauritius is a year round destination, ideal for winter sun, and this is considered the best time to go weather wise. High season is between December – February, with average temperatures between 25c and 33c but there is a slight risk of cyclones at this time. December is also the best month for snorkelling and diving. May – September is low season, with cooler average temperatures between 18c and 25c. There are many different attractions and tours that you can do on the island. Many tour operators offer full day trips that cover various attractions in one day. My favourite tour was Dodo’s trail, this was around 10 hours included a visit to the capital Port Louis and the central market. On the way there we stopped off at

WISH YOU WERE around 90 minute HERE: It takes one side of the islas by car to get from nd to the other

SEVEN COLOURED EARTHS: A natural phenomenon in Mauritius, comprising of seven different coloured sands that settle into different layers.

Fort Adelaide and enjoyed magnificent views over the town and harbour. After Port Louis we went to a local restaurant, Escale Creole – Table d’Hotes for an authentic Mauritian lunch. The hosts were amazing and it really felt like we were at a family meal, we were presented with Mauritian specialities such as Creole sausages, chicken curry and fricasseed cabbage, all served with a local flavoured rum. We then headed to the Blue Penny Museum and Caudan Waterfront – a modern shopping centre. I also went on a full day scenic tour, the Wild South West. Another long day but a great experience we visited Chamarel Waterfall, 7-Coloured Earth, La Rhumerie de Chamarel, Grand Bassin, Trou aux Cerfs and a ship model factory. The highlight for me was La Rhumerie de Chamarel, it was really interesting to find out how the local rum is made and also sample the different flavours. If you are into hiking, then Black River Gorges National Park is for you! It is recommended you go with a local guide as it is easy to get lost. Mauritius is often a go to destination for weddings and honeymoons, but don’t let that put you off. This is also a great destination for families. With plenty of history, culture and attractions on offer, it is not just for those who want to relax in the sun all day. Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’ I have no hesitation in recommending Mauritius, and we have all year round deals and offers available. As your Hays personal travel consultant you only need to deal with me direct, so rest assured I'll be at the end of the phone or email for any assistance you may need. Booking the perfect holiday for the you is my highest priority, from a weekend away to a dream wedding abroad, I aim to make the whole experience first class. Being part of the UK's largest independent travel company makes me extremely competitive on price, and you'll also have peace of mind that your holiday is financially protected. L

ocal dog sitters, Barking Mad Tyne and Wear, are asking fellow dog lovers to join them in helping to change lives. The dog holiday specialists have officially partnered with Dogs for Good, a life transforming charity which creates partnerships between people living with disability and specially trained assistance dogs.

Sue of Washington, North and South Tyneside enthused: "We are so proud to announce that Dogs for Good is Barking Mad's chosen charity for 2018! Dogs for Good train assistance dogs to support adults and children with a wide range of disabilities and also children with autism, in order to enrich and improve lives. This is particularly relevant to the work which we undertake with our own dog sitting Host Community. We offer the opportunity to care for someone else's dog whilst its owners are away and through this initiative, we witness the amazing difference that canine companions can make in terms of improving social interaction and fitness every day.” Cathryn Simpson, Corporate Partnerships Manager for Dogs for Good said, ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Barking Mad in 2018, there’s obvious

synergy between the two organisations in respect of the dogs but more importantly the ethos of both organisations is closely matched and this is important to ensure a successful partnership. Thank you to everyone for getting involved!"

Sue Seward of Barking Mad

Throughout 2018 they plan to hold fundraising events and would love to hear from you if you would like to get involved. Sue can be contacted on 0191 4194242 390263 email Sue.seward@barkingmad.uk.com and you can also visit www.barkingmad.uk.com/franchisees/tyne-and-wear. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 20

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Spring INTO

SUMMER

WITH BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

A

s the days grow longer and warmer and we dare to throw open the windows and doors to welcome in the fresh air, many people’s thoughts will turn to spring cleaning.

Helen Ross and her Bright & Beautiful team keep the homes of North Tyneside clean and sparkling all year round but did you know that cleaning our houses at this time of year has a rich and varied history? The Chinese have an ancient tradition of cleaning their homes ahead of the new year, which occurs just shortly after the Western new year. They sweep the floors to get rid of any bad luck or misfortune that may have accumulated during the previous year. As well as having its origins in history, spring cleaning also has a lot to do with biology. In the winter, the shorter days mean we are exposed to less sunlight and this reduced exposure to light produces melatonin in the body, the hormone that produces sleepiness. When the days start getting longer and

At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend.

lighter we produce less melatonin and feel more energetic. Helen, who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside, looks after homes across the area, delivering the highest standards of cleaning, tidying and laundry. Helen says: “At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time and make the most of the warmer weather – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend. Coming home to a clean and fresh smelling home, with the washing done and put away by our professional trained housekeepers, well it’s enough to put a spring into anyone’s step!”

MODERN WHOLESOME FOOD Get your taste buds ready for a treat at Evan’s Bistro in Whitley Bay

W

hitley Bay has a long standing reputation for both the quality and the variety of its eateries. However, the one thing missing in recent years was a quality restaurant serving the best of our local produce in an innovative way.

This changed last year with the opening of Evan’s Bistro, based right in the heart of the town. Evan’s Bistro has quickly gained a reputation for serving great quality hearty dishes with a modern twist, using the very best fresh local produce. Evan's Bistro is located two minutes’ walk from Whitley Bay Metro Station (in the old Tiger Bill's building on Whitley Road). The restaurant proudly sits on the extensive corner plot, boasting 85 covers and giving a modern feel with exposed bricks, booth style seating and a relaxed urban décor. They cater for all tastes, with a menu full of variety and mouth-watering choices. My wife and I have visited the Bistro a number of times since its doors opened, and have always thoroughly enjoyed, not only our food, but out whole dining experience. Our latest visit was on a Saturday lunchtime and, as usual, the restaurant had a really good buzz about it. We sat in one of the booths and took in the atmosphere, 26

We both vowed to sample dishes we had not yet tried so, having scanned both the lunch and specials menu, I ordered the king prawn, courgette and pea risotto finished with fresh mint and olive oil, whilst my wife opted for the vegetarian option of chargrilled halloumi with

roasted tomatoes in a brioche bun with homemade chips. When my risotto arrived, the presentation left you torn between not wishing to spoil the dish, and wanting to dive right in. Of course I took the latter option, and the dish was exactly as I hoped, light, fresh and the prawns were magnificent (in size and texture). I can highly recommend this dish. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her choice, with the roasted tomatoes perfectly complementing the halloumi. The chips, as always, are a nod to the good old days of home cooking. Both of the dishes were very tasty, and we left feeling very satisfied and with no room for dessert! Evan's Bistro aims to be as inclusive as possible, they have Vegan options on their menu (more available on request), are fully accessible and have installed a changing bed that can hold up to 20 stone in their disabled bathroom. They also have a dedicated play area to keep the young ones entertained while you relax and enjoy the food. (although the kids menu is also packed with fresh hearty options). Evans Bistro has definitely brought something new to Whitley Bay. The quality of their food, the ever evolving menu choices, and their portion sizes, combined with their passion have all made for a successful mix, long may it continue. ITALIAN TREATS BY THE SEA Richard Wilson decided to pay a visit to Links Art Gallery, a delightful cafe with lots on offer

There’s plenty to see while you enjoy your a tea or coffee

O

n one of our many ‘blow the cobwebs’ morning walks along Whitley Bay beach, my wife and I decided to call in to Links Art Gallery for a satisfying breakfast and to set us up for our stroll. The Links Art Gallery is a unique art gallery and café located at Dukes Walk, Northern Promenade, Whitley Bay, ideally, situated between Whitley Bay town centre and St Mary’s Island. A ten minute wander along the beach will take you into the heart of Whitley Bay, or in the other direction to the historic and picturesque Saint Mary’s Lighthouse. The venue is home to a superb selection of art and gifts, all available to purchase, with the emphasis firmly on work by North East artists. We visited mid-morning on a Friday and there was a bustling atmosphere, with a number of tables and comfortable sofas already taken by couples and groups of friends. The walls are adorned with paintings, prints and photography from North East artists, and there is a fabulous selection of locally themed gifts. The café menu is heavily Italian influenced, with a good selection of ciabattas, salads and Focaccias, as well as Italian Breakfast specials, pancakes, soups and their extensive coffee and tea selections. I chose the Salsiccia, which is a toasted ciabatta with Cumberland sausage, caramelised onions and melted fontina cheese (a cheese I have never tasted before but am now a fan of!) whilst my wife opted for the Prosciutto, the Italian Stone Baked Focaccia filled with ham, emmenthal cheese and tomato. Mine was a delicious fusion of flavours, extremely tasty

and a real hearty filling – a definite thumbs up. My wife’s was fresh and packed with flavour, she particularly loved the fresh Italian bread. There is an appetizing choice of desserts, so it was an easy decision to try something sweet, but not as easy to select just one! After a lengthy deliberation I opted for the white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake, whilst the Cannoli Siciliani filled with sweet ricotta cheese caught my wife’s eye. Both desserts were fresh and light and set us up for our morning walk. The café menu also has an extensive range of coffees and teas, and they are proud to be associated with Bristot, a world leader in the production of exclusive coffee. In order to achieve this prestigious blend their experts set about conducting extensive and important botanical and agronomic research by revisiting the original blends’ countries of origin. The result is an exclusive coffee, unrivalled and with limited production. Before we left, we browsed the array of gifts and accessories as well as the excellent selection of greetings cards. Links Art Gallery is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and a light snack whilst perusing, and possibly treating yourself to, some local art and gifts.

olf by the coast is said to be the truest test of a golfers ability, and some of the hardest yet most beautiful courses adorn the shores of the UK. Every seasoned golfer likes to challenge themselves, and few come tougher than a windy day on a seaside course. For beginners this type of course is perfect too, if you can learn to master your craft on such a course, you will have far fewer problems with your game when you play a less challenging one.

So, with this in mind, we would like to introduce you to one of the best clubs in the area, catering for regular players as well as complete beginners. Whitley Bay Golf Club club was originally founded in 1890, and started out on a 2 mile strip of land along the seafront links, eventually moving to its current location in the early 1900’s. Today the course has undergone many changes since that period, and more recently holes 6 to 10 have been completely redesigned to bring them in line with the quality layout that the remainder of the course enjoys. The course layout features many aspects that you may expect of a course near the sea – rolling and undulating fairways, elevation changes, gorse and firm, consistent greens throughout the year, whilst a dene runs through the course and is a feature on many of the holes. spectacular, whether taking in the course architecture, design and conditioning, looking out to sea beyond St Mary’s Lighthouse, or enjoying the wildlife. The ecology of the golf course is very important, and this has been recognised by finishing runners up two years running at the Golf Environment Awards in the category of Environmental Golf Course of the Year. The club is also one of a few in the North East to have an Indoor Golf Studio. The studio has three practice bays, with one offering Foresight GC2, which allows golfers to practice the various aspects of their games or play some of the best courses in the world, from Turnberry to The Belfry to Troon, to name a few. This is a great facility for those both experienced and new to the game, with lessons being able to be booked with their PGA Professional David Twizell. If you are thinking about starting to play golf, then an adults beginner course may be an excellent introduction to the game, and costs only £25 for the 5-week course. The club also offers 5-hole and11-hole taster golf packages, which allows people to experience playing the course with fellow beginners. The clubhouse is an excellent place to enjoy a drink or meal for both members and visitors, and is open for food and drinks from 11am Monday to Saturday and 12am every Sunday serving traditional Sunday lunch. The club has many social events during the year covering live music, a bridge club and quiz nights with details available on the website. Their Junior membership is thriving and, after a spectacular season last year, the junior team have just recently visited Portugal to represent England in a home nations competition and finished in 3rd place (see Dave Burston’s report, right). Whitley Bay Golf Club is a great choice to visit whether you wish to play the course, enjoy a drink or meal in the clubhouse, or experience a new course in the Indoor Golf Studio, everyone is very welcome. I’d like to personally thank everyone who contributed in any way towards the Juniors trip to Portugal, and made the event possible. We had a fantastic time, and played some wonderful golf. Initially we were drawn into Group 2 against Murrayfield, Llanwern and Lundin. On Thursday we played Murrayfield in awful weather and secured a well deserved draw 3-3. Friday morning we teed off early against Llanwern, again in dreadful conditions. It was extremely tense, as most of the games went down 18th, however we lost 3.5-2.5. Saturday we drew against Lundin Links 3-3, in front of the Sky Sports cameras, again everyone played extremely well, with some excellent matchplay golf. The format left us in the strange position of either fighting for 3rd and 4th spot, or 7th and 8th based on our results that day as we finished in a tie for 2nd place with 3 other teams. We scraped into second place based on our performance against the other two teams in the league. Sunday was a great day, we were drawn against New Club St Andrews, who's were also low handicappers. We really raised our game and beat them comfortably 4.5-1.5 to secure third place. Sky Sports were present for the last two days, and I was amazed as we played our best golf in front of the cameras. My thanks must firstly go to our Team players. They were incredible. We have 8 Juniors to be proud of. The experience they have gained is immeasurable. If I must single anyone out, I have to mention Rosie Belsham as she was awarded the Ladies best player, and she demoralised the opposition No. 1 players with 3 wins and a draw. Thanks also to the parents and our supporters who witnessed the event, I hope you took away some great memories and will continue to support our great team. The Juniors will always remember their trip to Portugal and on their behalf I thank you all. Check out Sky Sports Golf in the next month or so, to see birdies galore, chipping in from off the green, a tap in knee knocker and a great display by all. Well done Team Whitley Bay, bring on 2018 and thanks to our Junior Sponsor for 2018.... Dixon, sorry Nixon Hire.

THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT TO... Robert Stringer and Stephen Hannant of Bay Podiatry in Whitley Bay explain the importance of caring for children’s feet

M

aintaining and caring for a child’s feet will benefit their health, mobility and well-being throughout their entire lives.

The human foot is a highly complex structure, composed of 26 bones working together to allow the foot to adapt to uneven walking surfaces, and acting as a shock absorber with each step. In the newborn, the foot is composed mainly of relatively soft and flexible cartilage which gradually converts to bone with age. These bones are usually fully hardened by the age of 18. During this period of development, the foot can be at risk from injury and deformity due to ill-fitting clothing and footwear, therefore, great care should be taken with shoe types and shoe fitting. At the age of 8 the bones in the foot are still not fully formed. However, feet will start to grow less quickly (good news for parents) but still by approximately a whole size per year. The arch is also properly developed, which means your child’s footprint will now start to look much more like your own. Even now when your child’s foot looks more like an adult’s, it’s still almost as vulnerable as it’s ever been. The new heel-to-toe walking style means the shape of the foot changes inside the shoe with every step, so having shoes that are the correct shape and fitting is as vital as ever.

S BABY ’S FIRST SHOE walk unaided

The age at which a child begins to varies greatly. On average, it is 12 months for a girl and 15 months for a boy. Ideally, a child should not require shoes until they are walking competently outdoors. Children should be barefoot, in a safe environment, as often as possible to promote natural and normal foot development When choosing your child’s first shoes the first thing to look for is a trained fitter. Then make sure the shoes have these features: • Close cropped soles to prevent tripping • Room for movement and growth • Soft, breathable uppers for comfortable feet • Lightweight, flexible sole to aid walking • Whole and half sizes and a choice of widths • Fully adjustable fastenings • Padded ankle for protection and support

TOP TIPS • • •

• • •

• • • • •

Always have your child’s feet measured for length and width. Check the size of their socks, sleepsuits, babygrows and tights (don’t forget that these items can shrink in the wash – especially if tumble dried). Inspect their shoes regularly for unusual wear and seek professional advice if you are concerned. Unusual wear may be the first indication that there is a problem with the foot posture and should always be investigated by your registered podiatrist. Normally, wear is across the back of the heel or between the back and the outside. You should look out for severe wear on the inside or outside of the heel which may carry forward to the sole of the shoe. If possible, do not put your child in the same shoes every day. Alternate shoes to allow them to dry out, particularly if the foot is sweaty. Avoid the use of plimsolls in school all day every day. If a change of footwear is required in school, a fitted pair of lacing/velcro trainers is best. Inspect children’s feet regularly for inflamed skin around the nails, red pressure marks on the top of the small joints of the toes, below the ankle bones and at the back of the heel. Older children can be secretive about foot problems and a trivial, easily rectified problem can become more serious if neglected. If they complain of itchy or painful areas or you see any rashes or hard, raised areas on the skin, seek professional advice immediately. Wash their feet daily with simple soap and water and dry well, particularly between the toes. Children have naturally sweaty feet, but smelly feet may be an indication of poor hygiene. The toenails should be inspected regularly and trimmed as required. Never cut down the side of nails or cut them too short. When cutting, follow the line of the nail at the tip of the toe and always leave the corner of nail just clear of the fleshy part of the toe.

BUSINESS

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE

Whether you’re a small business, sole trader or have a site as a hobby or side-hustle, having a good website is essential. Aube Creative share their 10 ways to make sure your website is as easy to use (and as user-friendly) as possible... MAKE IT IS SMARTPHONE-FRIENDLY

ALWAYS USE RELEVANT IMAGERY

MAKE SURE IT LOADS QUICKLY

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!

We live in a Smartphone Society (Google claims 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead) so your website must display beautifully on mobile phones and tablets. People have less patience these days. Always make sure your website loads quickly and presents them what they want to see and sharpish. Faster speeds also improve your overall Google ranking. Good quality hosting always helps.

MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE

If a full-on photo shoot is out of the question you can always use good quality stock photography instead. Make sure the images match what your content is explaining. Avoid using images from free stock libraries which everyone uses over and over again. Keep it really simple. Don't bombard your readers with jargon only you and your team can understand. If neccessary, use a glossary. And avoid spelling mistakes.

CALLS-TO-ACTION

Develop an SEO strategy. Consider the search terms your audience might use to find you. Include content that's relevant: how-to videos, blog articles, e-books...

What do you want people to do once they've landed on your website? CTA buttons are one of the many elements used to indicate the next action a user should take. Example call-to-actions are: Download your Price List, Newsletter sign-up, Enter a competition...

MAKE IT EASY TO NAVIGATE

DON'T FORGET YOUR CONTACT INFO

Stick to navigation protocols people have come to expect. Always ensure navigation buttons are obvious and easily identifiable (towards the top of the page is best) and that all your links are working correctly so the user can quickly switch from page to page.

DISPLAY A STRONG CONSISTENT BRAND MESSAGE

Project the right image. Position your logo and core message in the top left hand corner. It’s the part of the screen to which our eyes are most naturally drawn.

Make it VERY easy for people to get in touch with you. You'd be surprised how many websites don't display correct contact info on every page. And it's so important!

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Your website is usually the first glimpse a potential new customer will get of your business. And first impressions last forever. Asking a professional to help can often save you time and money while you focus on developing your business instead.

NEED SOME HELP? Founded in 2008 aube=creative loves helping customers to create websites their own customers will love to use. Consultations are FREE. Call Paul on 079393 02550. Or visit aubecreative.co.uk 46

LOCAL READING

NEW BOOK EXPLORES THE ICONIC CASTLES OF NORTHUMBERLAND Colin Alexander investigates the story behind Northumberland's famous castles and fortifications in the latest book from Amberley Publishing.

T

housands of years before the Romans and the Venerable Bede, Northumberland was a landscape of hilltop forts, many of which can be traced today. Military order was imposed on the region by Hadrian’s legionaries, who built the 73mile northern frontier of the Roman Empire across the county.

Through the Dark Ages and into Medieval times, the kingdom of Northumbria was governed from massive castles, and the constant threat of the Border Reivers is evidenced in the masonry of fortified farmhouses, pele towers and churches. There are 600 recognised pele towers in England, stretching as far south as Norfolk and Cornwall; 258 of the 600 are in Northumberland. At the end of the border warfare, the magnificent castles became either romantic ruins or stately homes, while Britain’s east coast needed more modern defences against new, foreign enemies. Defensive Northumberland by Colin Alexander has a fascinating array of pictures and includes castles, hill-forts and more, some that are iconic within British history, covering prehistory to the modern day. The author, Colin Alexander was born in Northumberland, and has a life-long passion for local history, sparked by his mother’s copy of The King’s England – Northumberland. Appreciative of the county’s unique place geographically and historically, he has explored

most of its once-inhabited hilltops and its mediaeval castles, and walked the length of its greatest defensive monument – Hadrian’s Wall. He lives in Whitley Bay. Available in paperback from all good bookshops and online at www. amberley-books.com Also available in Kindle, Kobo and iBook formats.
