COBALT CENTRAL COFFEE & DELI
RELAUNCHES WITH NEW LOOK & TASTY MENU
A
local café has rebranded and relaunched a superb new menu full of fresh local produce and tasty favourites.
Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli, as you can tell from the name, is based at Cobalt Central, only a 2 minute drive away, next to Tesco, and has ample free parking right on the door step. Having taken over the premises in April 2017, the new owners initially kept the existing business name, the Spud and Lettuce, as well as keeping the look and original menu. They took their time to listen to customer feedback and what changes their regulars would like to see, both to the menu and the look and feel of the café. Having listened to all the feedback, the café underwent a total transformation during the summer, and has re-launched as Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli. Not only has the name changed, but the menu has been updated to include the most popular choices from the old menu, whilst adding their own favourites and exclusive dishes. Serving breakfast, lunches, light bites, coffee and cake, Cobalt Central’s commitment is to serve fresh, homemade food with locally sourced produce wherever possible. The brand new menu boasts a select of breakfast offerings, ranging from full English (in 2 different sizes) to lighter bites such as scrambled eggs 6
and eggs benedict. They have a range of lunchtime treats including sandwiches, salads, paninis, wraps, baked potatoes, cakes for those of you with a sweet tooth and a range of daily specials. Drinks include coffees (local Tynemouth brand), teas, frappés, protein shakes, smoothies and many more. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options means there is something for everyone to enjoy. Not only has the menu been re-vamped, so has the interior, which has a fresh, welcoming new décor and ample seating. As well as plenty of seating in the café, weather permitting, there is outdoor seating and the full menu is available to take away too!

SPANISH CITY OPENS....AT LAST! NEARLY 16,000 PEOPLE STEPPED FOOT INSIDE THE BEAUTIFULLY-RESTORED SPANISH CITY OVER THE LAST WEEKEND IN JULY.
N
orth Tyneside Council opened the doors to the iconic building to allow the public to have a look around the iconic building before it opened for business today at the end of July.
Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE first unveiled a plaque inside the building and then cut a ribbon at the main entrance to officially declare Spanish City open and the first guests were welcomed in. She said: “It was truly amazing to see so many people come along and join our celebrations to mark such an historic occasion. I know how much this building means to residents and I want to thank everyone for their patience because nobody knows more than me how long we’ve waited for it. This is something the people of Whitley Bay and North Tyneside all deserve – a high quality venue that we can be proud of and is completely unique. “It has been a pleasure to see residents finally getting the chance to step back inside the Spanish City after all these years and to see their faces light up when they walk in. The first two people to step foot inside when the doors opened were Vivien Riddell and John Parrack. Afterwards Vivien said: “I’ve not been lucky enough to be one of the ones who’ve got in before and didn’t expect to be first in the queue so it was really exciting. The building is amazing, stunning, and absolutely beautiful – I loved all the different 10
areas and the wedding suite is to die for - but mainly it’s to see that the old parts of it are still there but have been refurbished and brightened up so it’s just amazing.” The council invested £4m in the restoration project and also secured grants of £3.47m from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and more than £2m from the Coastal Communities Fund. Lucy Winskell, North East Committee Chair, HLF, said: “The word iconic when describing buildings is overused, but for Spanish City I think we will be using the word iconic a lot. You just need to look around to see how wonderful this building and its restoration provides a fantastic opportunity for the community here in Whitley Bay and beyond. Patrick Melia, North Tyneside Council Chief Executive, said: “It has been a long journey for the council and partners involved in the process but the reaction has been fantastic – we have delivered what we set out to do.” Martin Kay visited with his family and friends who came over from Holland. He said: “The quality and attention to detail will certainly enhance the seafront - our friends from Holland have already booked flights to return and sample the restaurants in October.” Spanish City, which is operated by Kymel Trading, is now open for business – more information is available at www.spanishcity.co.uk

HEALTHY PETS ARE HAPPY PETS! AS A PREVIEW OF OUR NEW REGULAR COLUMN ON PET CARE AND ADVICE, WE’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE FRANCES GRAY WHO OWNS AND RUNS VETS4PETS NORTH TYNESIDE VETERINARY PRACTICE
T
here’s a well-worn saying that ‘a dog – or indeed a cat – is for life not Christmas’ and that is very much the maxim of Frances and her colleagues who run their practice from the old church at the top of Rake Lane and Barnstable Road.
Between them Frances and her team believe that a well-looked-after and cared for pet is very much part of the family circle and deserves to be treated as such. Which is why they are so keen to offer owners advice and assistance from the time they welcome a puppy, kitten or another small animal into their homes through to a pet’s on-going care and treatment during its lifetime. Vets4Pets North Tyneside is run very much as a family business with continuity of care and clinical freedom being provided by a compact qualified team including Frances, her veterinary surgeon colleagues Gayle, Rachael and Shona. There is a strong nurse team lead by Claire and Angela with a very supportive reception team headed up by Lauren. Simon, Frances husband is the Practice Manager. Frances qualified as a vet at Edinburgh University and her first job was very much in the James Herriott ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ mould at a practice in Penrith including gaining plenty of experience in lambing and calving. These are fond memories and gave Frances a fantastic perspective on life as a vet but the cold nights on call and vast area she had to cover whilst managing a family pushed her in to the small animal world. After Cumbria Frances moved to the PDSA clinic on the outskirts of Newcastle. Living in Longhorsley at the time and bringing up her daughter Natasha, Frances took the decision to be a local vet within the Morpeth area. Working for another local practice Frances built up a fantastic, trusted client base and a strong reliable reputation within veterinary circles. Frances was head hunted by the Vets4Pets and offered the opportunity to buy her own Vets4Pets in North Tyneside. Through hard work, determination and that all important compassion, 12 12

Through hard work, determination and that all important compassion, caring and love for animals Vets4Pets North Tyneside is thriving
caring and love for animals North Tyneside is thriving. In 2016 Frances was asked to provide the same principles and apply them to Vets4Pets Morpeth. Frances and the team have embedded themselves in the both communities bringing the same vision and values across both practices. The location in North Tyneside is convenient as the practice is roadside, with ample free parking for clients. The state-of-the-art practice is well equipped to deal with the routine day-to-day care of pets but also has its own operating theatre, digital x-ray unit, ultrasound, endoscopy, pharmacy and in-house laboratory for animals needing more specialist treatment. They have an Orthopaedic surgeon who supports them fully and offers that all important expertise for more demanding cases. Frances and her team are also more than happy to meet and talk with pet owners seeking advice in looking after their animals including guidance on diets and they can offer a range of healthcare plans aimed at making essential routine treatment more affordable perhaps through monthly payment schemes. As part of their vet in the community project for 2018 and beyond, we are looking to work with likeminded groups. If you are interested in working with us please contact Simon (Practice Manager). The Vets4Pets team in North Tyneside will now be contributing regular articles on pet care and advice in ABC magazines.

NTLT STAR AWARDS CELEBRATES THE ACHIEVEMENTS LOCAL YOUNGSTERS THE FINAL OF THE 5TH ANNUAL NORTH TYNESIDE LEARNING TRUST STAR AWARDS SPONSORED BY VISION FOR EDUCATION WAS HELD AT THE ASSEMBLY ROOMS IN NEWCASTLE IN JULY.
T
he Trust Star Awards honours and celebrates the achievement of children and young people across a range of categories including achievement, inspiration, breakthrough, inclusion, fundraising, volunteering, local hero, useful and kind and can do attitude.
All of the award categories are sponsored by local and national business including Capita, Kier, Muckle LLP, Accenture, NHS, Engie, TES, Karbon Homes and Vision for Education. Over 600 nominations from Trust schools were received this year from which four finalists in each category were chosen. Matt Bailey from the Capital Radio breakfast team hosted the awards ceremony in the grand Assembly Rooms where guests got to share the outstanding stories and achievements of 48 children and young people from 30 Trust schools. The finalists, their families and Headteachers all attended the glittering awards ceremony and were presented with gift bags worth £150. Sponsors chose a winner in each category and winner awards were presented to 12 outstanding finalists who the sponsors felt deserved exceptional recognition of their achievements. This year the North Tyneside Business Forum supported the Star Awards and presented the resilience award which is designed to recognise children who have demonstrated extreme courage and determination in overcoming adversity. Presenting the award David Bavaird expressed how humbling it was to be in a room with what he described as “amazing young people from North Tyneside”. The NTLT Star Awards over the past 5 years has recognised the achievements of over 2,000 children and young people in North Tyneside and continues to be the highlight of the Trust annual calendar. 20

BURGHAM PARK GOLF CLUB OPEN TO ALL KEVIN GOW, A PGA PROFESSIONAL FOR 36 YEARS, HAS GONE FULL CIRCLE IN HIS CAREER AND RETURNED HOME, TO BRING ONE OF NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEST AND MOST POPULAR GOLF COURSES BACK TO ITS FORMER GLORY
B
urgham Park is a Championship standard parkland course, based just off the A1 a few miles north of Morpeth. The course itself boasts panoramic views of the Simonside Hills to the West and the coast to the East.
Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James was part of the original design team who put the course together in 1994, and it is still regarded as one of the regions finest and most challenging courses. Kevin brings a wealth of golfing experience to the club, starting his golfing life with the encouragement from his grandfather at Morpeth Golf Club aged eight. At the age of just 17 he started as an assistant golf professional with Ken Saint at Bedlington golf club and in 1981 he moved on to run Ken's second shop at Blyth golf club. 3 years later he got a call from Martin Jackson, professional at Morpeth golf club, to ask if he would consider coming to Morpeth as his assistant. As Morpeth was very dear in his heart, and still is, this was an offer he could not turn down. While at Morpeth Martin helped Kevin pass his full PGA exams, in 1985. In 1986 Kevin then move to Stockholms Golfklubb, in Sweden, where he spent two years as teaching Professional, before he was promoted as the head club professional, along with wife Jacqui he spent a further 5 years in Sweden 26
before returning home in 1993 to take on the position of club Professional at Houghton-le-Spring golf club. In March 2011 Kevin took on a five year lease of Cocken Lodge Golf course, near Durham, in the five years at Cocken he gained valuable knowledge and experience in running his own golf club, which will put him in good stead to succeed at Burgham Park. Now 36 years on Kevin, along with the help from his wife, Jacqui, daughters Samantha and Georgia, and younger brother Jason is taking on the leasehold of Burgham Park golf club. The golf course is not the only thing that has been given a new lease of life. The venue is now serving a wide range of home-cooked food, wide a varied menu of traditional British favourites. They also serve a traditional Sunday Lunch, which is proving very popular, especially with non-members who like a drive out on a Sunday and a lunch in a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views. So, whether you are a keen golfer looking for a welldesigned, picturesque and challenging course, or are looking for a new venue for your Sunday Lunches, a venue with stunning views and hearty home-cooked food, Burgham Park could be the perfect destination. JUST THE JOB: Chamber chairman Miles Walton (centre) and headteacher Rachel Butler (far right) with business representatives and Percy Main Primary School pupils
NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE CAREERS DAY IS JUST THE JOB FOR PERCY MAIN PRIMARY SCHOOL
A careers day was just the job for aspiring young schoolchildren as Percy Main Primary School teamed up with the North Shields Chamber to open children’s eyes to a host of career opportunities in the North East and beyond. The children, who dressed as what they wanted to be when they grow up, were able to hear from and take part in activities put on by 24 members and ‘friends’ of the Chamber. Representatives from businesses and services who went back to school on Thursday (15th June) included dentists, lawyers, bankers, web designers, media consultants, the police and the fire service. Year 2 pupil Leighton Parker commentated: “It’s been fun as we have done lots of different things and have had visits from people who are really cool!” This was the third time members of the Chamber have visited a North Shields school for a careers day over the past two years, previously visiting Christchurch Primary School and Waterville Primary School.
Chair of the Chamber Miles Walton said: “It started when a local school said to us that their children needed to find out more about the world of work, and the opportunities open to them. “We want to make sure children have a broad range of jobs to think about, without giving them a hard sell to any one career. “Children need to find out at an early age what is out there. If you wait until senior school they may have already got in their minds the things they like and don’t like, without knowing the full range of opportunities there are for them. “The careers days have grown each year we have done them, and we look forward to carrying out more in the future.” Headteacher of Percy Main Primary School Rachel Butler added: “We want to say a huge thank you to members of the Chamber who came down to put on what was a wonderful day. “It was all about raising aspirations and helping the children understand why education is important, and what it could lead to. “The children left school buzzing and parental feedback has been brilliant too. Everyone involved spoke so wonderfully about their work and really kept the children engaged. Thank you so much again for a really memorable day.”
BUSY SUMMER AT THE BEACON CENTRE
The summer holidays provide many of us with the challenge of how to keep the kids entertained without spending a small fortune, with this in mind, the Beacon Centre are hosting a series of free events especially created for younger visitors to enjoy. Following on from the success of the Centre’s Animal Adventures and Under the Sea events, which launched their programme of activity, the family fun continues on 7th August with a fabulous Princess Party, where younger visitors will be invited to come dressed as their favourite Princess for a host of FREE fun events. Included in the activity is the chance to meet the Centre’s very own Princess Belle, create a glitter mirror, as well as join in themed games. Their Roarsome Dinosaur event taking place on the 15th August is perfect for pre-schoolers, as it offers children a host of messy crafts and interactive activities to try their hand at. Lastly, for those of you who have little ones who love insects and reptiles, the Centre’s Rainforest Explorer event on 22nd August, which includes a storytelling adventure, complete the with the chance to meet the stars of the story which includes Houdini the snake, Ticklefoot the millipede and Tropicana the frog is a must. To find out more about the events or to book your space visit the Centres Facebook page @thebeaconcentrenorthshields or contact the Centre on 0191 2583909.
TWIN TOWN UPDATE
The Chamber continue to work with their partners from the Carnegie UK Trust and Merthyr Tydfil to develop plans to encourage increasing investment and visitors to the town as a part of the Twin Towns Project. The project is now in its second phase with Carnegie UK Trust deciding to hold the final celebration event in North Shields in October of this year. The event will see representatives from all participating towns along with key policy makers from Scotland and England attending with North Shields selected due to the significant progress which the town has made regarding increased use of social media, increased collaboration with the business community and other sectors and the strong and lasting links which have been made with Merthyr Tydfil. Commentating on the event Chamber Chair Miles Walton commentated ‘ we are delighted that Carnegie UK Trust have decided to hold the final celebration event in North Shields as this will allow us to showcase the many things which make our town so special with the event giving us the opportunity to promote the town to a wider and influential audience’.
NEW WEBSITE FOR THE FISH QUAY
The Chamber are delighted as part of the Coastal Communities team to have helped with the planning and development of a new website to promote the Fish Quay with the website now live at www.fish-quay.com. The website is designed to promote the Fish Quay as a visitor destination and to help celebrate its rich heritage. Commentating on the website Chamber member and member of the Coastal Communities Team David Bavaird commentated ‘ we are really pleased that the new website is up and running with a very impressive design which I am confident will see an increase in visitors to the Fish Quay encouraging economic investment, business growth and employment. The Fish Quay still retains its important role as one of the most important fishing ports in the UK and it now has a growing and justified reputation as a tourist destination and I am confident that the new website will do much to increase visitors’.

LOTS TO DISCOVER AT PACKHORSE YARD SET JUST OFF NEWGATE STREET IN THE HEART OF MORPETH, PACKHORSE YARD IS HOME TO A SELECTION OF LOCAL INDEPENDENT RETAILERS.
M
orpeth is home to a fantastic selection of independent retails, with both Newgate and Bridge Street offering shoppers a wide range of unique, individual outlets. The town centre is packed with characterful retail units, none more so that the independent shops based at Packhorse Yard, tucked away halfway up Newgate Street next to TSB Bank.
David Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us “We couldn’t be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June 2016. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we pass our second anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future.” The yard is home to a small selection of local independent retailers, all bringing something unique to the town. As you stroll up the alleyway, the last unit you will see is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June this year the shop will celebrated its second birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc.) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Originally based in a smaller unit in the yard, the business has recently moved into bigger premises at the end of the yard, and now stock a wider range of products. They now stock Tamiya plastic kits and a wider range of model rail accessories. They also have expanded into teddy bears, (ideal for the adult collector and a great gift) which are proving very popular and, in the next few weeks, they will be receiving more bears from Steiff and
Charlie bears. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www.jandjmodels. co.uk, or follow them on facebook. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. The newest arrival is the popular Sewing Box of Morpeth, who have recently relocated to the yard from their premises on Newgate Street. The Sewing Box has been established for over 40 years, and their values as an independent family business are as strong as ever, and they are delighted to show off our gorgeous new premises on Packhorse Yard. Their new space is full of all their fabulous fabrics,

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE BUSINESSES ACROSS THE NORTH EAST AND BEYOND ARE NOW ABLE TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTE WITH THEIR TEAM-BUILDING EXERCISES – BY WRITING AND RECORDING THEIR OWN COMPANY ANTHEM.
O
ne Day Anthem has brought together writers, producers and singers who have worked with some of the biggest names in showbiz, including Taylor Swift, Basement Jaxx, Sam Smith and Elbow.
They spend one day with employees, where together they write and record a unique song to sum up the business. One Day Anthem director Will Lang, who set up the business from his home in North Shields, said there is no better way of raising morale and bringing people together than making music. Will said: “I have been involved in all kinds of musical projects for the past decade, working with people from all walks of life, including being asked to speak in Westminster on how musical experiences in people’s everyday life increase engagement and well-being. “There is so much research which shows the positive effect music can have on a person’s well-being. “I came up with One Day Anthem because I see music as an ideal way of bringing employees together, whatever their role or status in a company, to build bonds and celebrate where they work. “By going into businesses and singing and making music together, I really believe we can help de-stress workers and make a positive impact on their mental health. 42
“This is team-building with a difference, and I can’t wait to work with more businesses across the region as we grow and grow!” Will’s team go into businesses of any size and start with a blank page. After picking a theme and a genre, groups go through a guided song-writing process, where they write the lyrics to their anthem, sing and even play instruments. By the end of the day businesses are left with their own recorded anthem, with all the pop studio magic, which they can use for their own purposes, whether it be for a TV advert, product launch or just for fun. Will added: “Teams come away from the day stronger, closer and more connected - imagine what that motivated, high-performing team will achieve.

By the end of the day businesses are left with their own recorded anthem, with all the pop studio magic, which they can use for their own purposes, whether it be for a TV advert, product launch or just for fun.
“Businesses leave with a fully mixed and mastered track and accompanying film as a lasting keepsake of the day they channelled your inner Ed Sheeran, and possibly even air-grabbed for the first time. “It really is team building like no other.” Anna Jenner, 33, took part in a One Day Anthem training event. She said: “I’ve done a lot of Team Building days, but none as interesting or fun as this one. “By taking away business-based activities and replacing them with these creative ones it doesn’t matter what the participants do in their day job, or what rank they are, as this format creates a level playing field. “Because One Day Anthem is creativity-based, I feel it fosters a more natural team spirit which is, after all, what a team building day is all about!” Chairman of North Shields Chamber of Commerce Miles Walton said: “There are so many benefits of team-building, but in this case the business will also end up with something that can be used for marketing, and any methods like this to attract customers to a business are a good thing. “This seems like a really unusual and innovative way of helping businesses to get people through the door.” For more information on One Day Anthem, head to www.onedayanthem.com or search @OneDayAnthem on social media.

EXPERIENCE: David Taylor, founder of SkyDog has used his years of experience in dog behaviour to make the Centre an enriching place to be.
DOG CARE WITH A DIFFERENCE
A
new behaviour focused dog daycare and training centre opening near Bedlington is set to revolutionise dog care in the North East. The purposebuilt facility has been custom designed by dog trainer David Taylor, to encourage dogs to feel content, exhibit good behaviour and achieve optimal learning conditions.
The SkyDog Centre offers daycare in an innovative new way, coupled with daily training sessions, trainer led games and many carefully selected activities throughout the day to ensure all dogs receive individually tailored care depending on their requirements. Everything about the way the centre is designed is focused on how the dogs brain works. As new dogs walk in they meet the ‘scent board’ which contains the scents from all the dogs staying at the centre to facilitate smooth social introductions. Lines of sight have been carefully controlled to avoid unnecessary barking. A sensory garden contains plants selected to help calm dogs and make them feel good. Luxury Cuddle Rooms are designed in the style of standard living rooms to make dogs feel at home during rest and relaxation time. The Centre boasts half an acre of enclosed private land including agility zones, training areas, sandpits, 48
pools and even a parkour area for trick training games. Other activities include ball games, tug and chase, nose work and daily walks at the beach just 2 minutes from the Centre. There are misting and sprinkler systems for dogs to play in or just to cool down. The large indoor arena includes toy playpens, ball pools, and additional exercise zones with specially designed flooring to protect dog’s joints. David Taylor, founder of SkyDog is committed to using the most up to date methodologies for force free positive reinforcement while caring for and training dogs. He has used his years of experience in dog behaviour to make the Centre an enriching place to be. The dogs in daycare at SkyDog are all assigned to their own SkyDog Handler who is trained in how to recognise dog communication and body language. Dogs are kept in small groups with well matched buddies that suit their personality. Older dogs can hang out together in the Old Age Pup zone and take time to chill out, and puppies, younger dogs, small dogs or very large dogs can also be grouped together as appropriate. No dog is ever left unsupervised, and all dogs receive a balance of activity, training and rest according to their own personal requirements. EXCITING PROJECT ANNOUNCED TO REDUCE LONELINESS IN NORTH TYNESIDE
C
are provider, EveryDay are delighted to announce that they will be working in partnership with Jo Jingles, the UK's largest provider of fun and interactive music, singing and movement sessions to deliver intergenerational sessions within two of their centres in North Tyneside.
Initially Jo Jingles will introduce it’s fun and educational music, singing and movement classes within Crossgates Extra Care Scheme and Cedar Grove Wellbeing Centre. Kerry Parker. Head of Professional Care Services said “we’re delighted and proud to welcome Jo Jingles to our customers. EveryDay as a care provider wants to be at the forefront of innovative new ways to reduce social isolation, loneliness and of course bring joy, happiness and a sense of wellbeing. Music provides positive mental stimulation for both young and older generations and we feel that our customer’s motor, communication, cognitive and social/emotional skills will benefit from this interaction with the young and their parents” In recent year Jo Jingles has brought children and parents into care settings to provide intergenerational music and singing sessions. These activities help to generate a music centred environment enabling participants to feel part of the community in which they reside. There is an abundance of research available supporting the claim that providing activities involving different age groups has significant health benefits for those involved. Growing older doesn’t necessarily mean having to lose an
interest in activities enjoyed as a child and hearing music can often stimulate very strong and meaningful memories. For many young children, exposure and familiarity with the older generation may, for a variety of reasons, be infrequent or non-existent. The same applies to the older generation who may not have regular contact with their grandchildren or families for one reason or another. EveryDay is working hard to support the #endlonelinessinnorthtyneside campaign by introducing more activities to engage older people. Loneliness is a bigger problem than simply an emotional experience. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to health. According to a study by the Red Cross in partnership with Co-op, more than nine million adults in the UK are often or always lonely. Research from the Office for National Statistics also found that about one in 20 people always or often felt lonely. There are currently over 850, 000 people living with dementia in the UK. It is more vital than ever to find effective activities to enhance the quality of life of people who are living with dementia. This along with the suite of activities already in place for EveryDay customers looks to unlock memories and reach the parts of the brain which other forms of communication cannot reach. ICONIC BEDLINGTON BUILDING THRIVING AS A BUSINESS CENTRE AN ICONIC BUILDING IN BEDLINGTON IS THRIVING AS A COMMUNITY HUB AND BUSINESS CENTRE FOR THE LOCAL AREA.
T
he old Police Station, situated next door to the well-known Red Lion pub, is home to a diverse range of local businesses and a stunning dance / fitness studio, and has rooms to hire on a short and long term basis.
The magnificent Victorian building is a former Police Station and magistrates court, and has stood on the site in the heart of Bedlington for over 100 years. The building closed in the early 90’s, but was converted to a mixture of apartments, a fitness studio and music/band practice studios over 20 years ago. The latest developments have seen an internal revamp, providing a real community hub for businesses in the local area. The main building is primarily a business centre, catering for all types of local businesses. It has a variety of retail and office suites, all with original features, one of which actually included the original Victorian prison cells! The building has a diverse range of tenants, and is home to many local independent businesses. The type of businesses include a dressmaking/alterations service, a tattoo artist, a photographer, a party supplies and accessories business, floatation equipment and even an offshore hydraulic hoses company. Members of the public are welcome to pop along and see for yourselves the range and quality of the local businesses in the building. 62
The building has rooms for hire on a long and short term basis, in a variety of sizes, each with their own unique features. They even offer room hire by the hour for meetings or group activities.
FOR HIRE: The dance studio is available for private parties and dance classes
Not only a home for local businesses, The Old Police Station also boasts a fantastic dance studio, which not only plays host to various classes, it is also available to hire, with prices starting from as little as ÂŁ15 per hour. The studio is currently used by a dance and fitness school and for Thai boxing, and can be hired for private parties as well as classes. For office/retail enquiries call Peter on 07714 298588 and for the Dance / Fitness Studio (including conference / exhibition / private parties / band practice) call Linda on 07969 528875.
