recent study found that the arts can help keep us well, aid recovery and support longer lives. The arts also help meet challenges in health and social care associated with ageing, loneliness, long-term conditions and mental health. Crucially they can also help save the care sector money.*
Aware of these huge benefits, Beth Lewins and Jennifer Ironside founded Take pART North East CIC in 2017, with the belief that they could improve the lives of others by sharing their creative skills and passion. They do this by working with community groups, schools and Care homes to provide quality art and craft sessions with social wellbeing being the main focus. Take pART aims to deliver creative activities that allow anyone, regardless of age, ability, or experience to explore art, craft and self-expression. The pair teach engaging techniques used in drawing and painting, in addition to fun activities to allow individuals to shake off their fears of producing art (often resulting from experiences at school), working both independently and together as a group. Beth and Jennifer are artists with over 15 years teaching experience, ranging from nursery level to adults, and both hold current DBS checks. From a young age they both always knew they wanted to help improve people’s lives, but they weren’t sure in which capacity they would do this. After working across a number of different sectors including health, business 6

Bespoke sessions for community groups such as WI, youth groups and mature clients are also available. The duo can also visit a care home or day centre where they will carry out sensory art activities, aimed at stimulating all the senses in a fun and relaxed set of sessions. The Whitley bay Shop sells a range of gifts, cards and prints
PROUDLY SUPPORTING NORTH EAST CREATIVES Enterprising couple build upon the success of their Whitley Bay business
J
ust 12 months after opening their Whitley Bay shop Paul and Lucy Hull, owners of For the Love of the North are celebrating success by opening their second shop.
Alongside their website, For the Love of the North had been solely based on Whitley Road in Whitley Bay selling a range of high quality cards, prints and gifts all sourced from North-East artists and creatives. Paul and Lucy also have gallery space, sell tickets, provide advice to visitors and keep a rolling collection of flyers and brochures detailing what’s going on in the local area. However, the enterprising couple who now employ 5 staff, launched their second shop within Stack in Newcastle City Centre in August. Stack is situated on the site of the old Odeon Cinema in Pilgrim Street and is the city’s very first leisure and shopping destination using shipping containers. Paul was nominated as one of 10 finalists in the Tourism Superstar awards run by a national newspaper and VisitEngland has unrivalled knowledge about the North-East. He said, “I’ve always known we have such 10

amazing, independent artists and craftspeople here in our region that often go unnoticed and we are delighted to be able to provide them with a retail platform in both our Whitley Bay and Newcastle stores.” Lucy said “We are hugely passionate about the NorthEast and having a physical presence in Newcastle city centre opens up so many new avenues for us and the creatives whom we support. We couldn’t be happier to bring products which have been so lovingly created into Newcastle. It’s a hugely exciting time for For the Love of the North. Chamber members met with representatives from Carnegie and Merthyr Tydfil
NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE NATIONAL EVENT TO BE HELD IN NORTH SHIELDS
The Chamber is delighted to announce that as a result of its involvement in the Carnegie UK Twin Towns Project, North Shields has been selected to hold the final celebration event in October. The event will see representatives from towns across the UK, policy makers, academics and research groups meet for two days to discuss how the lessons from the project can be used in the future for the benefit of other towns. In the original project, North Shields was twinned with Merthyr Tydfil in Wales as one of the towns to be involved in the Twin Towns Project, with six of these towns selected go forward for the Phase 2 project; the initiative was designed to provide a framework for towns to work together to share best practices, to improve economic activity in the town, to create employment and to encourage visitors to the town. As a part of the project, representatives from Carnegie and Merthyr Tydfil have visited the town on several occasions and have met with representatives from the business community, education, local voluntary 16
groups and representatives from North Tyneside Council to see how North Shields works, in a range of areas, to make North Shields a great place to live, work and visit. Pauline Radcliffe from Carnegie commented: ‘We decided that North Shields should be the location for this important event as North Shields has demonstrated how much can be achieved by different groups working together for the benefit of the whole community and we have been particularly impressed at how the Chamber have used social media and the #OneNorthShields campaign to promote North Shields. The stunning river location, the heritage sites, good transport links and facilities make it the perfect location to hold the conference’. Miles Walton, Chamber Chair, commented: ‘The Chamber has been delighted to be involved in this important project and we have picked up several ideas from other towns which we can use in North Shields. The Twin Town project has also led us to look more closely at our own town to help us to see what we could do differently and better. We look forward to welcoming the visitors to the conference and to showing them some of the things which makes North Shields so special’.
CHAMBER MEMBERS VISIT THE ROYAL QUAYS MARINA
Over 25 members of the North Shields Chamber of Trade visited member business Royal Quays Marina at North Shields www.quaymarinas.com/our-marinas/royal-quays/ to find out more about how the marina works. The event included a full tour of the marina including visits to the control tower, the pontoons and the newly upgraded facilities for visitors, with members hearing about how over 300 boats berthed at the marina use the facilities, how visiting boats can use the marina and the important role which the marina plays in supporting the North Shields fishing industry. Unlike many marinas, the Royal Quays caters not just for yachts and other leisure craft but also for commercial fishing vessels and boats used for angling. There is also a full service boatyard on the east side of the lock. In September 2017, the Marina was awarded 5 Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association, the only coastal marina in the North of England to have this accolade. In addition, Royal Quays Marina was the runner-up in the Coastal Marina (over 250 berths) category in the NMU 2018 UK Marina of the Year awards, presented at the London Boat Show in January 2018. After the tour, members enjoyed hospitality and some great food and drink at recently-opened The Lock https:// www.thelockquaysmarina.com/ Huge thanks go to Matt Simms and Brian Wilkes for providing us with all of the information on the marina and entertaining us with some great stories. Commentating on the visit, Chamber Chair Miles Walton commented ‘It was great to hear of the recent investment in the marina, to hear how the marina works and to find out the important role which the marina plays in our local economy; we look forward to continuing to work with the marina in the future to build stronger links with other businesses in North Shields and to encourage visitors to the marina. The Royal Quays area, including the marina, the international port and the Outlet Centre, is an important part of North Shields”. If you have never visited the marina before, finding it is easy - just head for the Royal Quays, follow the signs for the DFDS ferry and then follow the signs for the marina where there is plenty of free parking.

CARING FOR YOUR PETS TEETH
In the first edition of a regular column, Gayle Macdonald BVMS MRCVS of Vets4Pets explains the importance of your pets’ dental health
D
ental disease is a very common problem in pet animals – cats, dogs, rabbits and small mammals are all affected by it. As humans we know how painful it can be to have a tooth root abscess or even something smaller like a mouth ulcer. Animals very rarely show signs of pain with dental disease but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain. It often isn’t until they improve after the dental procedure that we can appreciate the pain they were in before. The most common signs of dental disease are: • bad breath (halitosis) • drooling more • pawing at the mouth (particularly in cats) • choosing to eat softer foods • chewing on one side of their mouth • dropping food when trying to eat • change in behaviour, not as keen to play with toys and may become withdrawn In more severe cases you may even see missing teeth or a swollen face. We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist, but our pets are still eating their food. This means as an owner it can often be difficult to detect dental disease. Dental disease is a progressive disease in animals in the same way it is for humans. It changes over time and therefore different and ongoing treatment is likely to be needed at different stages in a pet’s life. Some animals (like some humans) are very fortunate and they have great teeth and dental health – these animals may need very little intervention throughout their life. Other animals are less fortunate and these animals can need dental treatment every 4-12 months.
WHAT IS DENTAL DISEASE?
Dental disease covers a variety of conditions - the one we most commonly see in cats and dogs is periodontal disease. This is caused by a build-up of food and bacteria in the mouth which leads to calculus formation and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This in turn leads to destruction of the structures that support the teeth (ligaments and bone). Over time the gums become red, swollen and sore, teeth then become loose and may start to fall out. 20
There are 4 stages of dental disease with 0 being a healthy mouth and 4 being severe dental disease. Stages 1 and 2 are potentially reversible with a combination of veterinary treatment and dedicated home care (brushing teeth). Stages 3 and 4 are irreversible and often lead to loss of teeth. In stage 4 dental disease the amount of bacteria in the mouth is so high it can enter the bloodstream and travel through the body and impact on different organs e.g. bacteria settles in the heart valves and causes a disease called endocarditis.
“
We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist.
It is impossible to examine an animal’s mouth completely when they are awake – the only way to carry out an effective and accurate dental examination is under general anesthetic. You may hear your vet refer to a COHAT – this stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. During a COHAT the vet will examine every tooth with a dental probe and complete a dental chart – the same thing that happens when we go to the dentist. Things noted include how inflamed the gums are, how much calculus build up there is and whether there is any destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. Any missing, fractured or abnormal teeth will also be noted. Following this assessment it may be necessary to carry out dental radiographs (x-rays) to look at the roots of the teeth – this enables the vet to better assess any attachment loss around the teeth and evaluate the roots for any problems e.g. tooth root abscess (the same as in humans). An ultrasonic scaler will be used to carry out scaling of the tooth and under the gum line, the teeth will also be polished. Extractions will be carried out as necessary. To get the best out of any dental treatment you need to brush your animal’s teeth at home, at least 3 times weekly and ideally every day. Our nurses are happy to give advice on how to do this – it’s a great thing to start with young animals as often they accept it easier when younger. If you ever have any concerns about your pet’s dental health the best thing to do is to book an appointment to see your vet where they can assess your pet and discuss any treatment if it is necessary. To book a dental check up for your pet call Vets4Pets North Tyneside on 0191 2963311.

NORTH EAST WATCH BRAND CELEBRATES BEST OF THE REGION WITH NEW MODEL
A
new luxury watch brand based in North Shields has launched its first model, inspired by the North East’s rich academic and industrial heritage.
Northwind is the brainchild of Gateshead-born businessman Lee Smith, a watch-aficionado who wanted to create a watch brand that represents the best of the North. After years of running a specialist watch business importing exclusive brands from Russia, USA, Switzerland and Germany Lee spotted a gap in the market for something that celebrated his own region. Lee comments: “I found it fascinating that lots of countries and cultures tell their stories through their timepieces. “After importing watches like the Sturmanskie Gagarin (worn by the first man in space) or the Vostok Komandirskie (issued to Russian Servicemen and Women), I thought that I could do something that would show off the North East to the rest of the world.” Geordie Shore has shown people how we party in the North but Lee wanted to show another side. He turned to the historical heritage of the North East’s people and landscape when creating Northwind. Northwind is the brainchild of Gateshead-born businessman Lee Smith
22
“The world already knows that we play hard. I wanted to show the other side, what we’ve achieved through our hard work. I want to pay homage to the people that were at the forefront of industry, invention and academic study instead of the populist view of a hedonistic North East. “From the first train and first electric light bulb to the Venerable Bede or the scholarly monks of Lindisfarne - industry, innovation and the constant pursuit of knowledge have defined this area. I want Northwind to illustrate that and be a brand for North East men who align themselves with these values.” Northwind’s first limited edition piece, the Armstrong Automatic, is inspired by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist William Armstrong. Shieldfield born Armstrong was a hugely influential businessmen whose other achievements included founding Newcastle University, donating land now recognised as Jesmond Dene to the public, and building Cragside, the world’s first house to be lit by hydroelectricity. Lee's watch design references the North’s industrial heritage with a heavy duty and rugged aesthetic -

powered by a mechanical movement. The stainless steel is complimented by a leather strap and carry case suggestive of the role the beautiful and harsh landscape has played in the North’s history. Lee adds: “We’re less than two months in and we’ve already had keen interest from local retailers. We’re stocked in Union Clothing in Newcastle city centre and Hamiedog Menswear in Whitley Bay, as well as on some locally ran websites.” “I’m a proud northerner and I hope that my brand brings something to the creative tapestry of this region. Something that people can wear, be proud of and enjoy.” For more information and to purchase the Armstrong visit www.northwindwatches.com For trade enquiries contact sales@northwindwatches.com

NEW ‘ART STOP’ PART OF FISH QUAY IMPROVEMENTS Passengers can now enjoy some unique art while they wait for their bus as part of a welcome makeover of North Shields Fish Quay.
T
he new bus shelter at Fiddler’s Green is billed as the latest gallery for professional artists and writers in North Tyneside.
North Tyneside Council’s North Shields Fish Quay Coastal Communities Team, FISH (Folk Interested in Shields Harbour) and Studio Above the Fish Shop developed the idea for an ‘art stop’ in partnership with the council and Nexus. It already features work by local poet Paul Summers, who was inspired by his daily walks between Tynemouth and North Shields, and various other pieces of art will also be added and change every few months. Artist Helen Smith, who runs Studio Above the Fish Shop on the Fish Quay, said: “North Tyneside is spilling over with talented artists and writers. The art stop is a great way for them to make a new artwork or poem for the enjoyment of visitors, residents and those of us who work on the Fish Quay.” Cllr Frank Lott, Chairman of the North Shields Fish Quay Coastal Communities Team, said: “It’s fantastic to see the new art stop in place on the Fish Quay. It is a unique feature that really enhances the area for residents and visitors and is a great way of showcasing the artistic talents of so many local people. This is the latest example of the Coastal Communities Team’s commitment to making public spaces around the Fish Quay more attractive and promoting the visitor economy.” 26
The ‘art stop’ is one of a number of improvements around the Fish Quay, which have been completed through the Coastal Community Team. The Coastal Community Team is a local partnership made up of North Tyneside Council and a range of local interest groups, businesses and stakeholders from the community. The team delivered the brand new bus shelter before the artwork was installed. The other recently-completed changes include: • Fifteen new commercial bin stores – installed to improve the appearance of the area, particularly for people eating and drinking nearby, and resolve issue with fly-tipping and vermin • A new Fish Quay website has been launched – www.fish-quay.com – featuring information about the quay, things to do, places to eat and drink. • New Fish Quay branding – developed in partnership with Thinkpad Creative and the Coastal Community Team, the branding is used on the new website and all promotional materials and events There is more to come too with two large signs being developed to be placed at either end of the Fish Quay, in the Tanners Bank and Bell Street areas, to welcome people and direct them around the quay. Three new CCTV cameras covering the entire quay are also in operation with a further three due to go live this month to help improve security.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING IN WOMEN Whether you are 25, 35, or even 85, everyone can benefit from improving their strength! By Sarah Howe
I
ncreased endurance levels, improved stability, a better metabolism and building healthier bones... all of these can be achieved by strength training!
Our metabolism is based on the amount of muscle we have, So as we age & lose muscle we will in effect burn less calories. This is when women can not understand how they are gaining weight and starting to feel “Flabby”. How many of you go back to the good old diet that worked last month…Last year, The diet that you have been on for the last 10years? What actually happens when you diet & lose “weight on the scales” is that you are also losing 4% of your muscle mass which yes you guessed will lower your metabolism once again. Inactive Adults lose muscle mass every year as we age on average 3-8% of muscle mass per decade. By Strength training you can help minimize your muscle loss & increase your metabolism, As you age the percentage of fat will increase on your body if you do not replace the lean muscle that you are losing. Regardless of your age strength training helps preserve and enhance your muscle mass & Participating in a regular strength training program will help burn calories more efficiently. What’s more, when you strength train you get more Calorie – Torching bang for your buck. It keeps your body working long after you stop “The after –burn” the harder you workout the longer the “After burn” will last. So the big question WILL I BULK UP? Many women miss out on the effects of strength training in the fear that they will “Bulk up” and look like Arnold Schwaznegger but this is all a misconception. Due to women having high levels of Oestrogen it makes it
28
difficult to become overly muscular – The effects/ benefits of strength training on women are more for strength, endurance & resulting in a firmer look. YOUNG VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO LEARN DIGITAL AND MEDIA SKILLS & HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE ‘#Iwill Learn, Create, Make Change’ Project will help youngsters to create campaigns around issues in the local community that they care about.
A
new volunteering project from North Tyneside VODA is offering young volunteers the chance to learn digital and media skills from a range of top professionals and to create campaigns around issues in the local community that they care about.
Funded by the Virgin Money Foundation, the project is part of the wider #iwill campaign to increase the numbers of young people engaged in social action. It is aimed at young people aged between 14 and 20 (up to 25 with additional needs or disabilities) in North Tyneside. Over the next 18 months, VODA will be working with teams of young volunteers, offering them the chance to attend workshops on a range of topics including photography, film-making, web design, social media, blogging, animation, PR, design and more. The teams will then be supported to create digital campaigns around issues in society and the local the community that they care about, and to work with existing groups and 36
organisations in the borough on ‘campaign challenges.’ Josie Robinson, VODA’s Social Action Worker who is delivering the project, said: “We’ve already had fantastic workshops from businesses including Newcastle advertising agency, Drummond Central, Carrie Brookes Communications, a teamwork session from Turncoach, UX designer Pete Maughan and creative agency Media Borne - all of whom have donated their time and skills for the benefit of the project and the volunteers. This is a fantastic opportunity for any young people interested in all things digital, social and media to learn from the experts and to put their new found skills to use for the benefit of the wider community. It’s also a really fun project and a great way to meet new people!” Two campaigns are now well underway on the themes of mental health and tackling LGBT-related hate crime look out for details of those in the local press and online. Opportunities to get involved VODA is now looking for young volunteers to get involved in the project or youth organisations that have members who want to have a stronger voice on an issue they care about. Josie goes on to say: “If you interested

One team of #iwill volunteers wanted to create a campaign promoting positive mental health and the idea that people are multi-layered and need to take time to ‘unfold’ themselves. The team developed a name and logo for their campaign - Unfold Your Mental Health - and have set up a website and Facebook page which will be populated with images, blogs, resources for those who may need help and with positive messages and ideas for relaxing and taking care of your mental health. Volunteer Hannah Gray said: “Our campaign is designed to help people with their mental health and show that if you are having problems, you’re not alone. I’m really enjoying being part of this project and have learned so much already – I now know how to set up a Facebook page and schedule posts, how to do origami and how to design a logo, something I’m really proud of.” in volunteering as part of this project, we would love to hear from you. There are some fantastic opportunities coming up to work with experts in the creative fields and to really make a difference to causes close to young people’s hearts. We also want to hear from community groups and voluntary organisations about any digital and media-related opportunities or ‘challenges’ that young #iwill volunteers could undertake. For example, you might need a promotional video for your project or your posters could do with a re-design. If you’d like to discuss creating an #iwill challenge, please get in touch with VODA.” For more information visit www.voda.org.uk/iwill or contact VODA on 0191 643 2626 for more information.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

OVER 60'S GET THAT FRIDAY FEELING! Free Friday swimming sessions in North Tyneside have been extended after proving a hit with over 60s.
H
undreds of residents aged 60 and over have taken up North Tyneside Council’s offer of free swimming on Fridays at all of its pools since the scheme was launched in September 2017.
It was initially funded through Sport England’s Swim Local project for a year but has been so successful that the council has decided to continue the initiative for a further 12 months. ‘Free swim Fridays’ are a great way of encouraging regular use of the pools among older residents, with the associated benefits that swimming offers to health and wellbeing. Swimming supports body weight, with no pressure on joints. It’s ideal for those with injuries or illnesses like arthritis and studies show that half an hour of swimming, three times a week, can significantly reduce blood pressure. There’s also the social side of getting to know other swimmers and the rhythmic nature of swimming helps to boost psychological wellbeing too. Since launching the scheme more than 1,600 over 60s have taken up the free swimming offer – 39 per cent of whom are new users to the council’s facilities. More than 15,000 swims by over 60s have taken place on
40
Fridays over the last year, compared to 8,000 the year before. And senior swimming has increased by 15 per cent across council-run pools compared to the previous year. Cllr Sarah Day, cabinet member for Sport and Leisure, said: “We know how much these sessions mean to North Tyneside’s over 60s community and that is why I am delighted that we are going to be running them again. Swimming is a fantastic pastime and a great way to stay healthy, so we want to give all of our residents the chance to take advantage of North Tyneside’s outstanding facilities. “We have four fantastic pools, with friendly staff and tutors to support people who may not have been swimming for a while. So regardless of how long it’s been, or your past swimming experience, we can support you in your journey.” Free swim Fridays run every Friday at Waves in Whitley Bay, Tynemouth Pool, The Lakeside Centre in Killingworth and Hadrian Leisure Centre in Wallsend. There’s no need to book – just visit any pool with proof of age. To find out more, visit www.northtyneside.gov.uk or ask at any pool.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is this autumn calling on the nation to transform their homes and help beat heartbreak forever by taking on its Makeover Challenge.
L
aunching this October, the BHF are asking shoppers to get creative and give their homes a fresh new look as we move inside for the autumn months, using items bought at BHF stores.
From upcycling a pre-loved piece of furniture to refreshing a whole room or space, the BHF are encouraging interiors enthusiasts, bargain hunters and those on a budget to get involved and head into one of their 180 furniture and home stores across England, Scotland and Wales to bag a bargain, give their home a seasonal update and share the new looks on social media with the #BoughtatBHF hashtag. Offering furniture and electrical goods, new and used homewares and stylish homes accessories, every item sold in BHF stores will help to raise funds for research into heart disease, stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes. Last year, BHF furniture stores sold over 140,000 donated sofas, which went towards raising more than £25 million for the charity’s vital work. Interior design expert and TV presenter Linda Barker said: ‘British Heart Foundation stores are a real treasure trove of hidden gems and a great place to get inspired when giving your home a fresh new look. Whether upcycling a vintage piece of furniture or simply adding some new accessories, you can give a space a makeover without having to break the bank – all while helping raise funds for life saving heart research.’ Allison Swaine-Hughes, Retail Director at the BHF said: “With the cooler months just around the corner, autumn is

the ideal time to give your home a refresh. We know our shoppers have got stacks of creativity, so we want to see the fantastic ways they’ve been transforming their homes. Every penny raised in our shops goes towards vital research into heart disease, stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes.” BHF furniture and home stores offer the perfect solution for students, first time buyers and savvy shoppers seeking affordable home wares, with sofas from £95 and wardrobes from £40 - shoppers can also take advantage of the BHF’s free delivery service for items over £30. A husband and wife team are celebrating the fifth anniversary of their successful PR business which they say happened accidentally.
R
usbyMedia, based in North Shields, was established by Frankie Rusby following the birth of daughter Matilda.
The former journalist, who had been a reporter at BBC South Today and The Portsmouth News, was on maternity leave when she was asked by a friend to help give his business a boost through the media. Fast-forward a year and Frankie, husband Jake and Matilda had moved from Portsmouth to Tynemouth where Frankie set up RusbyMedia, providing PR for a range of clients, gaining coverage locally and nationally in print, radio and television media. Jake quit his job to came on board two years later, adding his own skills and experience in national news reporting, broadcasting, social media and photography. Frankie, 35, said: “It is amazing to look back at the last five years and think about what we have achieved, both as a business and a family. I feel so lucky to be doing something I love and feel so passionate about. “As a journalist I was always very focused and driven, and naturally I am a planner, but RusbyMedia wasn’t planned – it just happened organically. “I fell in love with PR while doing it on maternity leave, it incorporated everything I loved about being a journalist – writing, highlighting success stories, and meeting different and interesting people. “I never imagined that Jake and I would, or even could, 46
work together, but the dynamic is great and we feel we have achieved so much together. What we offer is a unique kind of PR, we offer a service that is passionate, professional and personal.” Jake and Frankie now have a range of clients they work with on a regular basis including Smile For Life Children’s Charity, inflatable obstacle course Gung-Ho!, casting agent NE1 4.TV, The North Shields Chamber of Trade, arts venue The Exchange and comedians Danny Adams and Clive Webb. Jake also offers photography and video to clients, as part of his skillset. The 33-year-old said: “Both Frankie and I got into journalism to make a difference, and thankfully that is what we are able to do now with RusbyMedia. "We work with some very talented, passionate people across the region, and further afield, promoting some incredible businesses and helping to draw attention to the work of some truly life-changing charities. "I could never have imagined when we got together that over a decade down the line we would become colleagues and business partners, but now that we are there is no-one that I'd rather work with." The couple now balance their work with raising a family and have son Zachary, who is two, as well as five-yearold Matilda. To find out more about RusbyMedia go to www. rusbymedia.com or @RusbyMedia on social media.

2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
W
hilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today. Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. Edwardian women were expected to be mothers, carers and homemakers. But with men leaving to fight in the war, women had to take on the jobs of those who were serving. From 1914, millions took on jobs traditionally held More than 1.5 million women flooded into these industries and others to replace men away at the front. In 1914 just over 2 million worked in factories and by the end of the war it was nearly 3 million. For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service,
business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. Although when the war was over many women were forced to quit industrial jobs to make way for returning men, their role in the war had fundamentally changed how society regarded them and in 1918 around 8.5 million women first got the vote, following the actions of the suffragette movement. The Women of the War brooch is a stunning piece of jewellery. Plated with a gold tone and hand finished with brilliant baguette crystals, the poppy brooches are dedicated to the memory of the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the First World War, whose names are recognised by CWGC as women serving in the auxiliary units during the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women and also acts as a way of saying thank you to all the women, who often have untold stories, who ultimately went on to change society and women’s place within it. With all profits raised from the sale of the brooches going directly to the Legion and their important work, they also help support the British Armed Forces family today. The Women of the First World War brooch is available from The Royal British Legion’s official online shop www.poppyshop.org.uk for £29.99

A
local café has rebranded and relaunched a superb new menu full of fresh local produce and tasty favourites.
Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli, as you can tell from the name, is based at Cobalt Central, only a 2 minute drive away, next to Tesco, and has ample free parking right on the door step. Having taken over the premises in April 2017, the new owners initially kept the existing business name, the Spud and Lettuce, as well as keeping the look and original menu. They took their time to listen to customer feedback and what changes their regulars would like to see, both to the menu and the look and feel of the café. Having listened to all the feedback, the café underwent a total transformation during the summer, and has re-launched as Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli. Not only has the name changed, but the menu has been updated to include the most popular choices from the old menu, whilst adding their own favourites and exclusive dishes. Serving breakfast, lunches, light bites, coffee and cake, Cobalt Central’s commitment is to serve fresh, homemade food with locally sourced produce wherever possible. The brand new menu boasts a select of breakfast offerings, ranging from full English (in 2 different sizes) to lighter bites such as scrambled eggs
and eggs benedict. They have a range of lunchtime treats including sandwiches, salads, paninis, wraps, baked potatoes, cakes for those of you with a sweet tooth and a range of daily specials. Drinks include coffees (local Tynemouth brand), teas, frappés, protein shakes, smoothies and many more. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options means there is something for everyone to enjoy. Not only has the menu been re-vamped, so has the interior, which has a fresh, welcoming new décor and ample seating. As well as plenty of seating in the café, weather permitting, there is outdoor seating and the full menu is available to take away too!
We are pleased to team up with the café and offer all Local Business Directory readers a fantastic 50% OFF your final bill on your next visit to the café! Simply take the advert on the opposite page in to the café and present it at the till at time of purchase. Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli, Unit B, 4 Silver Fox Way, Cobalt Business Park, NE27 0QJ.
