CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE
TYNEMOUTH BUSINESSES JOIN FORCES Many of the businesses in Tynemouth have decided to get together on a regular basis to discuss matters of common interest. In the last few years in Tynemouth, some longstanding businesses have been sold to new owners and a number of new shops and other establishments have started up. Stephen Minns (pictured, right), who acquired Tynemouth 61 Guesthouse & Tea Room just over a year ago, has agreed to coordinate regular meetings of new and existing businesses to discuss matters affecting tourism, trade and commerce in Front Street and also the surrounding streets. Views of local residents will also be considered. ‘We are very grateful to the North Shields Chamber of Trade for taking the initiative to invite us attend their meetings and arrange a special meeting for Tynemouth businesses’, Stephen said. ‘We debated many local issues at the meeting and it was generally felt that there was a need for a regular discussion amongst interested parties. We have a common interest in promoting the commercial interests of the village and ensuring that issues such as noise, parking and deliveries are taken into consideration and resolved. The Tynemouth offering includes tourist attractions, beaches, independent shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, a couple of B&Bs and a weekend market. Tourists and local residents come to Tynemouth and our intention is to continue to keep our offering as good as it can be.’ Lou Laggan, secretary of the North Shields Chamber, commented, ‘Tynemouth is an important part of North Shields and we were very pleased to be able to facilitate a meeting of those keen to debate common issues. Stephen has enthusiastically taken on the role of coordinating the new group and we look forward to assisting him and his colleagues in whatever way we can.’ 6

CARNEGIE TWIN TOWN SCHEME HAILED A SUCCESS AT CELEBRATION EVENT An innovative Twin Town scheme to improve regional economies across the UK has been hailed a huge success by business leaders. For the past 18 months towns across the country have been part of Carnergie UK’s Twin Towns scheme, which has encouraged like-minded towns to share expertise and ideas. The towns, with the support of Carnegie UK Trust, would then be well-placed to overcome challenges and to improve their regional economies. Wooler in Northumberland, Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire and North Shields in Tyne and Wear were all involved, as well as Broughshane in Northern Ireland, Whitburn in Scotland and Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. The project came to an end last week with representatives from all six towns meeting in North Shields to celebrate their successful partnerships. Pauline Radcliffe, Project Manager for the Carnegie UK Trust Twin Towns UK programme, said: “Twin Towns has shown how supporting small towns to collaborate on a journey of understanding about their places can make a positive impact locally. “This is especially true at a time when devolution of power to larger towns and cities is becoming more prevalent. “In fostering new relationships with partners that
towns might not have considered before, it has provided a new perspective and the opportunity to identify new solutions to real and current issues.” The idea behind the scheme was for the towns, with the support of Carnegie, to work together to identify solutions to shared challenges and to exchange ideas. David Bavaird, who co-ordinated the North Shields Chamber of Trade’s involvement in the Twin Towns Project, said: “It has been fantastic to be part of the Twin Towns project for the past 18 months, with both North Shields and Merthyr Tydfil benefitting from the partnership. “The two towns have been able to share best practice and learn a lot from each other. It has also been useful to have other business-orientated people in another part of the UK to be a sounding board for ideas. “Being twinned with Merthyr has been a catalyst for us to look at ourselves as a Chamber and also for looking at what we offer as a town. “We have developed good relationships with people in Merthyr Tydfil over the past 18 months and we look forward to these continuing, and sharing more ideas that will benefit both towns over the coming years. “I’d also like to thank North Tyneside Council for their active support of our involvement in this Project.”

TOWN CENTRE ACTIVITIES A series of festive fun is taking place within the Beacon Centre in the lead up to Christmas, with the arrival of Santa to his grotto on the 24th November (11.30am-2pm) launching the festivities. To celebrate Santa’s early arrival, children can also join his elves to decorate and personalise their very own Christmas stocking to take home, as well as have their face painted for free with a festive design (12-2pm). Continuing with an annual tradition, The Centre will be supporting the popular Victorian Christmas Market in Northumberland Square on 8th & 9th December. In addition to the Centre’s Santa’s grotto, children can meet a host of festive characters, as well as try their hand at one of the free Christmas craft activities taking place within the Centre. Throughout December visitors can revel in the festive atmosphere as local schools and community choirs perform a selection of Christmas songs and carols. Plus, keep your eyes peeled on the Centre’s facebook page for festive competitions and giveaways, as well as details on a host of seasonal special offers which many of the stores within the Centre will also be offering. A visit to Santa is just £1, with each child receiving a small gift. All proceeds from the Grotto will be donated to the North Shields Fishermen’s Mission. HEALTHY TURKEY SOUP Make the most of your leftovers this year with this hearty, warming recipe. It will help you get back on track if you’ve had a bit too much to eat and drink on Christmas Day!

1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, halved and sliced into thin strips 1 red pepper, seeded and sliced into thin strips 2 tsp ground coriander ¼ - ½ tsp chilli flakes 3 tbsp basmati rice or long grain rice 1½ l hot turkey or chicken stock 250g 9oz turkeys meat, cut into thin strips (leg meat will have the most flavour) 410g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed a handful of fresh coriander or flatleaf parsley, roughly chopped (optional)

Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and fry for 5 minutes or so, stirring every now and then until it starts to soften. Then add the red pepper, ground coriander, chilli and rice and stir round the pan for about a minute. Pour in the hot stock, stir in the turkey and chickpeas and season well. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes, until the vegetables and rice are tender. Stir in the coriander or parsley and it’s ready.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

GET READY FOR WINTER Bluebird Care North Tyneside have put together top tips of things to consider for older people as the weather gets colder
F
or most people, when the clocks go back it signals the start of winter. For some, especially if you are older or have older relatives, it can be a more difficult time when you may need a bit of extra help or support. There are lots of things you can do to keep healthy and well in winter. PREPARE FOR WINTER • Keep an eye on weather forecasts, particularly severe weather warnings from the Met Office. • Stock up on basics in case you can’t get out of your home for a couple of days. • Nominate a flu friend or neighbour who can collect essentials such as prescriptions on your behalf • Keep a list of emergency contacts by your phone and add local organisations and charities who support older people. • Know where your stopcock is located. • Make sure your pipes are adequately lagged and your roof properly insulated. STAY SAFE • Don’t take any risks in snow or icy conditions. If you have to go out, make sure you wear shoes with a good grip. • Keep torches, a battery-powered radio and spare batteries where they’re easy to find in the dark in case of power cuts. • If you can, get a mobile phone (as it doesn't not rely on your electricity supply) and keep it charged.
STAY WELL • Have your flu jab – book your appointment now if you haven’t already done so. • Try to eat a balanced diet and eat small portions at regular intervals throughout the day. • Drink plenty of fluids. • If you can, get up and move around. If your mobility is more limited, do some chair exercises to help you stay warm and active. • Good hand hygiene can prevent the spread of viruses. Stay warm • If eligible, join the Priority Service Register of your energy distributor to ensure you receive support during prolonged power outages. • Have a hot drink regularly and if you find moving about difficult, have a flask handy. • Have your heating system checked every year and consider installing thermostatic valves on radiators in the rooms you use the most. • Ask about any benefits, grants and discounts you might be entitled to such as pension credits, winter fuel payments and insulation • Wear warm clothes in layers. STAY IN TOUCH • Make sure you know how to contact your neighbours by phone – it’s easy to lose touch in the winter months when people aren’t out and about as much. • Continue to go to your social activities with friends or at the local community centre. One of the many things that my housekeeping team hears from our clients is how wonderful they feel coming home to their clean, tidy and beautiful smelling homes. So, to help you to stay relaxed and to create a warm and welcoming environment for all your family and friends this festive season, I’ve created a cleaning countdown to Christmas for you to follow.
MID DECEMBER
Walk through your home with a visitor’s eye to identify all the things that need cleaning, smartening up or fixing: make a list of any of these jobs. Declutter. This is especially important if you have children as a tide of new toys and presents will be coming your way on Christmas morning. It’s probably a good time to go through their current toys and donate some to charity. The same can also be said for other rooms throughout the house.
A WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Tackle the bigger jobs first, especially those that are unlikely to need to be done again before Christmas Day such as cleaning the windows, washing the skirting boards, washing and ironing bed linen for guest rooms,
vacuuming the sofa, washing out the fridge to make way for party food etc. Deep clean the bathroom; including the tops of cabinets and inside of cabinets, you’ll be surprised how many guests will take a nosey! Deep clean the kitchen, doing the jobs you don’t tend to do on a daily basis such as washing cupboard fronts, fronts of appliances, inside the microwave and the bin. Sort out the coat cupboard and store away items that are not worn very often in order to make way for guests coats.
CHRISTMAS EVE
Time to do the jobs in the areas that you hope won’t get too messy before the big day such as vacuuming and mopping floors, plumping up sofa cushions, giving the bathroom a quick once over and polishing mirrors. Hang fresh hand towels and put out new hand soap in the toilets.
CHRISTMAS DAY
Empty the bins and put in fresh bin bags. Spot check bathrooms, kitchen and floors for marks. Carry a laundry basket around your home and pick up clutter and either put the things back where they should be or just hide the basket! Finally, as guests arrive, pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz, enjoy the day with family and friends and make sure someone else takes care of the washing up!

CARING FOR YOUR PETS TEETH
In the first edition of a regular column, Gayle Macdonald BVMS MRCVS of Vets4Pets explains the importance of your pets’ dental health
D
ental disease is a very common problem in pet animals – cats, dogs, rabbits and small mammals are all affected by it. As humans we know how painful it can be to have a tooth root abscess or even something smaller like a mouth ulcer. Animals very rarely show signs of pain with dental disease but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain. It often isn’t until they improve after the dental procedure that we can appreciate the pain they were in before. The most common signs of dental disease are: • bad breath (halitosis) • drooling more • pawing at the mouth (particularly in cats) • choosing to eat softer foods • chewing on one side of their mouth • dropping food when trying to eat • change in behaviour, not as keen to play with toys and may become withdrawn In more severe cases you may even see missing teeth or a swollen face. We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist, but our pets are still eating their food. This means as an owner it can often be difficult to detect dental disease. Dental disease is a progressive disease in animals in the same way it is for humans. It changes over time and therefore different and ongoing treatment is likely to be needed at different stages in a pet’s life. Some animals (like some humans) are very fortunate and they have great teeth and dental health – these animals may need very little intervention throughout their life. Other animals are less fortunate and these animals can need dental treatment every 4-12 months.
WHAT IS DENTAL DISEASE?
Dental disease covers a variety of conditions - the one we most commonly see in cats and dogs is periodontal disease. This is caused by a build-up of food and bacteria in the mouth which leads to calculus formation and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This in turn leads to destruction of the structures that support the teeth (ligaments and bone). Over time the gums become red, swollen and sore, teeth then become loose and may start to fall out. 62
There are 4 stages of dental disease with 0 being a healthy mouth and 4 being severe dental disease. Stages 1 and 2 are potentially reversible with a combination of veterinary treatment and dedicated home care (brushing teeth). Stages 3 and 4 are irreversible and often lead to loss of teeth. In stage 4 dental disease the amount of bacteria in the mouth is so high it can enter the bloodstream and travel through the body and impact on different organs e.g. bacteria settles in the heart valves and causes a disease called endocarditis.

It is impossible to examine an animal’s mouth completely when they are awake – the only way to carry out an effective and accurate dental examination is under general anesthetic. You may hear your vet refer to a COHAT – this stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. During a COHAT the vet will examine every tooth with a dental probe and complete a dental chart – the same thing that happens when we go to the dentist. Things noted include how inflamed the gums are, how much calculus build up there is and whether there is any destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. Any missing, fractured or abnormal teeth will also be noted. Following this assessment it may be necessary to carry out dental radiographs (x-rays) to look at the roots of the teeth – this enables the vet to better assess any attachment loss around the teeth and evaluate the roots for any problems e.g. tooth root abscess (the same as in humans). An ultrasonic scaler will be used to carry out scaling of the tooth and under the gum line, the teeth will also be polished. Extractions will be carried out as necessary. To get the best out of any dental treatment you need to brush your animal’s teeth at home, at least 3 times weekly and ideally every day. Our nurses are happy to give advice on how to do this – it’s a great thing to start with young animals as often they accept it easier when younger.
