CHAMBER ENTERS NEW ERA AS TOWN CRIER HANGS UP HIS HAT

T

he North Shields town crier has hung up his hat - signalling the start of a new era for the North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce. The role, which had been held for 18 years by Bill Temple, came to an end last year, with the town crier uniform and equipment going on display in North Shields Customer First Centre. Now the public will be able to view Bill’s iconic red jacket, as well as his hat, bell, scroll and hat for the foreseeable future. Chamber Chairman Miles Walton said: “This is symbolic of how the Chamber is moving forward and trying to work much more to the modern way of doing business. “We are very much looking to the future but in this way, by having the town crier’s uniform on display, we are also able to celebrate an important part of our past. “The display has proved to be very popular, especially with visiting schools, who have been able to see how things used to be. “We are extremely pleased to be able to pass it on in a way which benefits the community.” The role of town crier was launched 25 years ago by the Chamber, with the role largely ceremonial. In recent years the crier’s only official appearance 6

was at North Shields’ famous Victorian Christmas Market, which takes place in Northumberland Square every December. Bill, who now lives in Seaton Sluice, was proud to have held the role for so long and is pleased the uniform will be on display for the public to view. Former RAF Warrant Officer Bill, 73, said: “I was the town crier for 18 years and enjoyed every minute of it. “Traditionally all the information that was passed on from businesses and the people that were running the towns went through the crier. “He would stand in the town square and make important announcements, and that’s basically what my job was.” He added: “It is fantastic that the costume and accessories are on display for people to see, including schools. It means the next generation is keeping in touch with the past, which is a very important thing.” The North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce is the voice of business in the town, and with members from more than 100 companies.

BLU SKIES AHEAD THANKS TO NORTH SHIELDS ACCOUNTANTS

ew businesses across the region are getting a much-needed financial boost – thanks in part to a North Shields accountancy firm and member of the North Shields Chamber. Blu Sky Chartered Accountants, based on Church Way in North Shields, has been helping bridge the gap between potential investors and start-up tech companies as part of the Angel Community Programme. Set up by Tech Nation, the national network for ambitious tech entrepreneurs, the programme aims to plug the gap between tech investors, or ‘angels’, and tech businesses. Blu Sky, which has 21 employees, has been running workshops to ensure businesses appeal to investors, but also for investors to advise them on what to look for in a start-up. Blu Sky co-founder Dave Gibson said: “We are making sure businesses are set up so they are in the best position they can be for investment, and that investors know what to look for in a businesses. “Supporting the local angel community will only encourage more local investments with start-ups in the region, boosting our business ecosystem. “This programme is bringing people and commerce into the region which means more money is spent in the North East.” The Angel Community Programme was launched on the back of a survey which showed that out of more than 2,500 deals involving more 650 angel investors across the country, less than 0.5 per cent were based in the North East. Tech Nation hopes the programme, which also involves Newcastle solicitors Mincoffs, will keep the flow of funding and knowledge within the region.

MICROPUB SET TO OPEN AT SPANISH CITY DOME IN WHITLEY BAY

T

he Split Chimp, who already have a venue in Newcastle, is preparing to open its doors within the iconic seafront building in February. The Micropub will be a welcome new addition to the revamped Spanish City Dome in Whitley Bay. With the popularity of real ale and micro-breweries on the rise, the Dome is the perfect location for the towns newest micropub, and it should compliment the existing selection of food and drink outlets who already call the Dome home. The Split Chimp, who already have a site in the Westgate Road arches in Newcastle, is opening its 2nd venue at the eye-catching seafront building in early February. Since opening its first micropub in Newcastle in 2015 the venue has gone from strength to strength, and its relaxing 'home from home' feel is proving a hit with customers, with comfy leather Chesterfields, real ales on 6 Handpulls, 3 Keg Beers and bottled craft beer. Owner, Mark Hall, an ex Paramedic, said: "We are very excited to be coming to Whitley Bay. It's a great location and there's been a lot of regeneration along the seafront.

10

We are looking forward to opening - offering customers great beers, real ale and ciders." The pub will open from 12 noon to 11pm every day and will compliment the range of business already based at the dome. The Dome reopened to the public last summer after a multi-million pound regeneration scheme led by North Tyneside Council. It currently houses seafood restaurants, a tea room, champagne bar, and waffle and pancake house as well as space for weddings and conferences.

e believe that healthy eyes make all the difference to someone’s quality of life. In the world of Concept, our community is at the heart of what we do. Through early detection, we have treated pathology, complex eye conditions, optimised vision and even saved lives. As an ‘Associate Practice’ with the international charity ‘Optometry Giving Sight’, we support eye care across the globe. Closer to home, our philosophy in the North East, is underpinned by a social model of care because for us, every life matters. We live in a society where more people

are feeling isolated, experience poverty, basic lack of nutrition and increasing health inequalities. Access to health care is often a post code lottery. This means that the responsiveness and quality of care or intervention needed is not always available. In recognition of this, for over a decade, Concept have campaigned and worked with charities including Crisis, the Cyrenian’s, Salvation Army and MIND. We have also at the request of local schools, worked with parents and teachers to help children with special care needs. As an independent company, we invest in serving those that need us most. Health officials

need to recognise that access to eye health care is a basic human health right. Over 80% of all vision impairment can be prevented or cured. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), An estimated 253 million people live with vision impairment. With an increasing population of older people, more people will be at risk of vision impairment due to chronic eye diseases. Globally, chronic eye diseases are the main cause of vision loss. Uncorrected refractive errors and then unoperated cataract are the top two causes of vision impairment. An estimated 19 million children are vision impaired. Of these,12 million children have a vision impairment due to refractive error. Health research shows all too often, the direct link between deprivation and vision. Our Eye for an Eye campaign, without discrimination, actively supports the vision of vulnerable people in the North East and in developing countries through education, resources and clinical care. HOW TO BOOST YOUR METABOLISM By Sarah Howe

Y

ou usually hear people blaming their weight gain on a slow metabolism.

They have cut down on calories and they are walking more or exercising more (more often than not its aerobic classes, “walking the dog” or running). So lets talk about what your metabolism actually is. It’s not an organ like your liver or kidneys. Your metabolism is necessary to maintain life. It is the organic & chemical process inside your organisms (or how quickly your body can burn calories & fat which allows you to stay alive). Your metabolism takes all the calories from the food and drink that you consume, mixes it with oxygen and releases energy into the body for your body to function i.e. breathing, repairing cells and digesting. Some people have a faster metabolism which means their body can burn energy from food at a faster rate. This also depends on body size, age and gender. Muscle cells require more energy to maintain than fat cells, therefore the more muscle you have the more calories your body burns. As you age and you lose muscle, your body replaces it with body fat which is why your metabolism slows down (unless you strength train and replace the muscle loss). Men tend to have more muscle than women which explains why men have a faster metabolism and can eat more calories than women. Here are 10 ways to boost your metabolism: 1. Eat plenty protein with each meal 2. Stand up more 3. Drinking green tea 4. Add spices to your food 5. Drink plenty cold water 6. Good nights sleep 7. Drink coffee 8. Replace your cooking fat with coconut oil 9. High intensity workout 10. Strength training

20

The last two are probably the most important. Doing a HITT workout will help burn more fat & therefore increasing your metabolic rate even after you workout. As mentioned earlier, muscle is more metabolically active so by strength training you will gain muscle mass, reduce body fat and increase your metabolism. Plus your body will burn more calories at rest. People who do diets and only do walking, running, aerobic classes, treadmills, bikes etc. will lose muscle mass therefore lowering metabolism. A lot of people who starve themselves on lower calories, under eat or do diets they are depriving their bodies. Take a look at this - on a daily basis this is how much of the energy/calories your body uses to function, Your brain 20%, your beating heart all the time accounts for 15-20%, the liver another 15-20% as well as kidneys, lungs and other tissues etc. The only other thing remaining is your muscle which is 25% of your resting metabolism. So stop cutting down on calories, do strength training (each new pound of muscle increases your metabolism) aerobic exercise can not offer this alone! At Curves we offer a safe environment for women of all ages, shapes & sizes to combine strength training & cardio in a HITT style. 30 minutes at Curves burns up to 500 calories compared to 30 minutes on a treadmill burns 216 calories approx or 30 minutes on a rowing machine 189 calories approx. Just imagine only having to do 30 minutes at Curves and be able to eat properly and not have to deprive yourself battling against your weight? PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM FUTURE CARE FEES Your home may be at risk

I

n the past five years one million family homes have had to be sold to pay for care. Homes that were going to be the children’s inheritance.

Should you need to go into care in later life, your assets will be means tested by the local authority. If the value of your assets, including your home, exceeds £23,250 you will have to pay full care fees. The average cost of care is now in excess of £30,000 a year.

HOW CAN WE LEGALLY PROTECT OUR HOME FROM CARE FEES?

There are many 'myths' about protecting your home, such as giving it away to your children (not recommended) the 7 year rule (applies to Inheritance Tax NOT care fees) Common Law Marriage (no such thing in the UK) etc. It is important to receive the correct advice when considering how to protect, so local authorities will not regard it as deliberate deprivation of assets.

MIRROR WILLS

If in your wills you leave everything to each other, and then to the children (mirror wills) you may unintentionally gift the full home to the local authority, should surviving spouse go into care. The children could then be left with very little.

PROPERTY TRUST WILLS LEGALLY PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM CARE FEES

Instead of leaving your share of the home to each other on first death, with Property Trust Wills, you each leave your share of the home in trust (ring fenced) for the children, stating they are not to receive it during the lifetime of the surviving spouse, who retains the FULL USE of the home. Should surviving spouse go into care, that half of the home in trust is legally protected from care fees. Guaranteeing at least half the value of your home for your children. If surviving spouse does not go into care, your full home passes to the children on the death of surviving spouse as per your wills. Spouse and children could be the executors, trustees and beneficiaries.

By spending a few hundred pounds now on Property Trust Wills, you can legally protect at least half the value of your home for your children. The cost also includes free probate advice at the time it is needed. If requested, money left on first death to surviving spouse, could also be protected by Money Trusts written into your wills. Surviving spouse could access capital and income from the trust. If surviving spouse goes into care, the money in the trust is safeguarded from care fees. Spouse and children could be the trustees and beneficiaries. Both the Property and Money Trusts protect your children’s inheritance in the event of: Surviving spouse remarrying, Going bankrupt, Changing their will, Children divorcing, IHT mitigation etc. Ask our adviser to explain. All trust wills are drafted by our experienced solicitors who specialise in this field. Trust Wills do not come into effect until first death. Whilst both of you are alive you are still able to sell your home and buy another, spend your money or save your money. Your assets remain under your control. We also recommend Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) which enable your family to legally manage your affairs for your benefit, should you become unable to. Without LPA’s the Court of Protection would take control of your finances. The Local Authority would take control of your welfare, including deciding where you would live. LPA’s can only be made whilst you have mental capacity. They are important. Please ask our adviser to explain. Our service is fully inclusive, our qualified solicitors, who are insured and regulated Members of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) will draft your trust wills to reflect your own requirements. We personally deliver the completed documents to you. Our adviser would also oversee and guide you through the signing process, as it is important that legal documents are signed and witnessed correctly to ensure validity. Members of IPW & SWW, Trading Standards approved, GDPR registered, providing a courteous and professional service since 2006. If you have any concerns, and would like to know more, please CALL US on 0191 206 4007 to arrange a free home or office appointment. Our experienced adviser will be happy to clearly explain and answer any questions you may have. Perhaps it’s time to protect your family...

LIFE CHANGING: Wendy Dougal before and after her weight loss

NORTH TYNESIDE RESIDENT LOSES OVER 13 STONE AT WW WORKSHOPS Wendy Dougal of North Shields felt that she ‘had to do something’ after finding out that her husband, David, was terminally ill, which meant she had to become his carer. Here’s her story...

I

n June 2016 I found out my husband was terminally ill. At that time I weighed 26 stone 3lbs and could barely care for myself. I couldn't walk more than 5 minutes and I was constantly in pain but I had to become my husband's carer!

We had to give up our jobs and lost our home. I knew I had to do something to enable me to care for my husband so on 4th January 2017 I joined WW (previously Weight Watchers) . I have now lost 13 stone 1lb. I still have 1 stone 2lbs to lose but I have totally changed my life! Initially, alongside my healthy eating, I started taking very short walks of just 5 minutes twice a day. As I started to lose weight I found I could gradually increase this much FACE TO FACE: Wendy has never looked back since joining WW

28

to my little dog, Lexie's, excitement! It was slow and small increments but gradually I was walking further and further. While attending my WW Workshops my coach mentioned a charity 5k walk in aid of St Oswald's Hospice. Despite 5k feeling like a marathon to me at that point I signed up! I had a few months to get myself walking further and each day I saw better results. Finally the day arrived and I was quite nervous but I did it! I was a bit stiff and sore the next day but so proud of myself. After this first challenge I never looked back. I joined a gym and started working out 3 times a week and even gave Zumba a try! After a while I decided I needed a new challenge and started the Couch to 5k running programme. It seemed so hard at first and I never thought I would complete it but 9 weeks later I did it! I really can't quite believe I am the same person I was! From being unable to walk and in constant pain to joining Curves and doing strength training there 3 times a week, walking for 1 hour every day and completing the Couch to 5k running programme! I am now more than capable of giving my husband the care he needs. I attend the WW Workshop at Linskill Centre, North Shields on Wednesdays at 10am with Diamond Wellness Coach Julie Watson, but I have also become a WW Wellness Coach too, running workshops in St Andrews Church in Monkseaton and St Hilda's Church in North Shields. GARDENING TRENDS Mark and Stew from Plantsplus Garden Centre share their gardening trends for 2019

W

hilst the weather doesn’t make for a great time spent in the garden you can still keep gardening on your mind by preparing for the year ahead. We’re looking at 2019’s trends so that you’re raring to go in March when the ground begins to warm up again.

36

THE ‘COTTAGE GARDEN’

Don’t think that you need an actual cottage or a country garden to match with this trend showing strongest in smaller garden areas such as patios, balconies and porches. Apparent last year at Plantsplus Garden Centre and continuing to be popular due to their simplicity in care are traditional Perennials and Herbaceous (no woody stems above the ground). Their variety in shape, colour and texture can help to bring the feeling of the countryside into urban environments without growing too large or having to maintain over winter.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

If your current planters are needing a new lease of colour you can fill in some bare spaces with a little compost and plant up some of our winter bedding packs.

GROW YOUR OWN

You can’t ignore that we’re all becoming a little more eco-conscious and aware of where our food is from which makes this trend unsurprising. The everpopular tomato will never go out of fashion but try a dwarf variety this year to pop into a window planter to save space – lettuce, spring onions and chillies are also great for this, whether indoors or outdoors. There has been resurgence in vegetables that need an extra bit of attention to grow and have become a hit with modern outdoor hobbyists. Homegrown artichokes and asparagus can be tricky in containers but can provide a great sense of achievement once ready to harvest, especially when you don’t have a plot to plant vegetables straight into the ground.

CONTAINER PLANTING

Every year we plant up thousands of hanging pots and patio planters with bright, bold colours that should last you through the winter and summer seasons. We put a lot of thought into their arrangement and ease of care so that you can spend your time enjoying them, rather than tending to them. If your current planters are needing a new lease of colour you can fill in some bare spaces with a little compost and plant up some of our winter bedding packs before you invest in your summer arrangement. If you’re still a little pushed for space outside your home or flat, living walls can make a decorative alternative to planters. Affix them to any wall or fence (inside or outside) and fill with herbs, nasturtiums, grasses or bedding plants. Living walls can hide a multitude of sins, be changed frequently with the seasons and are easy to move. You can find some more inspiration by visiting our own living walls planted on the front of our garden centre and a demonstration video inside our foyer.

REFURBISHED PEAREY HOUSE CENTRE AVAILABLE FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

P

earey House Centre is a small, independent, local charity based in North Shields. They were founded in 1873 as Northumberland and Durham home teaching society after that they became Tynemouth Blind Welfare Society.

In 2015 they became a charitable Incorporated Organisation and changed their name to Pearey House centre for visually impaired. Pearey House has been fully refurbished and modernised over the last 3 years with the help of grant funding from various sources including the National Lottery, Greggs, Sir James Knott and others. Upstairs is fully accessible by a Stannah stair lift which houses an audio library, therapy room, craft room and a conference facility. On the ground floor they have a small gym and computer suite.

40

New for 2019 is a service called “Vision Outreach”. Anyone registered visually impaired or blind can use the service, an example of what they offer is: if someone would like to go to the cinema or for a walk along the seafront but hasn’t anyone to go with and they lack confidence or motivation we can take them on that outing. They hope this will build confidence, independence and prevent social isolation. If you would like to access the service or know of someone who could benefit please call 0191 2574388 or e-mail peareyhouse2@hotmail.co.uk. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

All work we undertake is at fixed fees:

Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

RECIPE

TIP

HAND HELD LAMB & CHORIZO PIES

This recipe works well with beef mince too.

Prep Time 35 Mins

These mouth-watering hand held pies, inspired by Scotch eggs are a portable lunch option that can be served hot or cold. Lean lamb mince is combined with chorizo sausage, spring onions, herbs and quail eggs are encased in shortcrust pastry and served with a home made spiced tomato relish.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

✽ 375g/12oz lean lamb mince ✽ 2 spring onions, finely chopped ✽ 50g/2oz chorizo sausage, finely chopped ✽ 30ml/2tbsp freshly chopped flatleaf parsley ✽ Salt and freshly milled black pepper ✽ 2 x 320g packs shortcrust pastry ✽ 12 quail’s eggs, hard-boiled ✽ Beaten egg, to glaze

• •

FOR THE SPICED TOMATO RELISH

✽ 15ml/1tbsp rapeseed or olive oil ✽ 1 small red onion, peeled and finely chopped ✽ 1 x 200g can chopped tomatoes ✽ 5ml/1tsp caster sugar ✽ Pinch dried chilli flakes ✽ 15ml/1tbsp good balsamic vinegar 44

• • • • •

Cook Time 25 Minutes Serves 6 People

To make the filling, in a large bowl mix together the mince, spring onions, chorizo and parsley. Season. On a lightly floured surface roll the pastry to a thickness of a one pound coin and cut out twelve 9cm/3½in circles to fit a 12-hole greased muffin tin. Cut twelve 7cm/2¾in circles for the lid. Gently press the large pastry circles into the holes of the muffin tins and half fill with a portion of the mince mixture. Top with a quail egg then a final layer of the mince mixture to cover. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 6, 200°C/400°F. Brush the edges with the beaten egg, then place the lid on top, pressing the edges together to seal. Brush the tops with the remaining egg and make a hole in the centre for any steam to escape. Bake the pies for 25 minutes, then leave to cool in the tin. Meanwhile, prepare the relish; heat the oil in a non-stick pan. Cook the onions for 2-3 minutes, or until soft. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. Serve the pies with the relish (both the pies and the relish taste great hot or cold).

CAFE & BISTRO BRINGS A TASTY FUSION TO WHITLEY LODGE

L

ast October saw the opening of a brand new family run café & bistro in the heart of Whitley Lodge. Simpsons Café and Bistro brings a mix of British classic dishes and authentic Indonesian street food to the area, with a mouth-watering menu and a completely new look. The premises, based on Claremont Crescent, has played host to a number of cafés in recent years, but Simpsons brings something completely unique. After a full makeover, the family run cafe and bistro now has a clean, modern look to compliment the contemporary food on offer.

The menu is a fusion of traditional British dishes and authentic Indonesian offerings, ranging from light bites and snacks to hearty main courses. There’s a wide selection of breakfast options, including the traditional full English, omelettes, eggs on toast and their popular bacon and sausage butties. Lunchtime options include the special homemade deluxe burger, fajitas, sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, salads and a range of sweet treats. Then there is the Indonesian twist! The authentic Indonesian selections, all freshly made with their unique blend of ingredients, include nasi goreng, mie goreng, Indonesian chicken curry, beef rendag, and a number of authentic soups and stir fry dishes. There’s something to suit everyone’s tastes. The premises also has an alcohol license (and a good selection of beverages to compliment both the English and Indonesian dishes). Check out their facebook page to view their menu, or why not pop in for a coffee and take a look at the wonderfully varied menu yourself. MORE CHILDREN THAN EVER ARE GETTING ON THEIR BIKES!

M

ore than 1,700 children in North Tyneside have learned how to cycle safely over the last year – and the number is set to keep growing.

Throughout 2018, a total of 1,743 pupils from local schools took part in Bikeability sessions, which are organised by North Tyneside Council – a record number for a 12 month period. A further 250 children are expected to complete the popular programme over the next three months. The training programme is designed to give youngsters the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on the roads. Described as cycling proficiency for the 21st century, Bikeability is split into different levels with the first giving children basic bike-handling skills before progressing onto teaching basic, and then more advanced, road skills. Cllr Sarah Day, North Tyneside Council’s Cycling Champion and Cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure, said: “It’s fantastic to hear that so many children have taken advantage of this vital cycle safety training – it is so important that they are taught the skills to stay safe out on the roads. There are so many benefits to getting on two wheels; it’s great for the environment and your health so it is really good news that so many of our young people are taking up the activity." “We work hard to ensure that every child in the borough is given the chance to take part in the free scheme and I know how popular the sessions are so I look forward to seeing many more complete the course over the coming months. We take promoting sustainable forms of travel really seriously here in North Tyneside and as Cycling Champion I would urge anyone thinking about getting involved to take a look at the training and support on offer.” 58

As part of the Bikeability training, certificates and badges are awarded when pupils successfully complete the course and they are encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels. Pupils from Battle Hill Primary School recently completed the training and are now equipped with the skills needed to take on the open road. Kevin Hughes, year six teacher and PE coordinator, said: “Bikeability has enabled us to promote cycling to the children that attend our school. It provides them with some basic knowledge of how to check and fix simple issues with their bikes. It also teaches the children how to stay safe in and around the roads when cycling, as well as introducing them to road signs and markings.” North Tyneside Council will be launching its Summer of Cycling campaign in the coming months, aimed at encouraging more people to get into the saddle. The initiative will feature various free fun, family-friendly, cycling activities at community venues throughout the borough and Bikeability will be available to young people during the school summer holidays. Look out for #SummerOfCyclingNT on Twitter for more information and regular updates on how you can get involved. For more information about Bikeability call (0191) 643 7446, email tracey.stonehouse@northtyneside.gov.uk or visit Active North Tyneside. North Tyneside Council also runs the GoSmarter scheme which is aimed at encouraging people of all ages to leave their cars at home and try cycling, walking, scooting or use public transport instead. It also involves making physical changes to streets near schools and pupils can help design local cycling and walking improvements. For further details call (0191) 643 6125.

CARING FOR YOUR PETS TEETH

In the first edition of a regular column, Gayle Macdonald BVMS MRCVS of Vets4Pets explains the importance of your pets’ dental health

D

ental disease is a very common problem in pet animals – cats, dogs, rabbits and small mammals are all affected by it. As humans we know how painful it can be to have a tooth root abscess or even something smaller like a mouth ulcer. Animals very rarely show signs of pain with dental disease but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain. It often isn’t until they improve after the dental procedure that we can appreciate the pain they were in before. The most common signs of dental disease are: • bad breath (halitosis) • drooling more • pawing at the mouth (particularly in cats) • choosing to eat softer foods • chewing on one side of their mouth • dropping food when trying to eat • change in behaviour, not as keen to play with toys and may become withdrawn In more severe cases you may even see missing teeth or a swollen face. We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist, but our pets are still eating their food. This means as an owner it can often be difficult to detect dental disease. Dental disease is a progressive disease in animals in the same way it is for humans. It changes over time and therefore different and ongoing treatment is likely to be needed at different stages in a pet’s life. Some animals (like some humans) are very fortunate and they have great teeth and dental health – these animals may need very little intervention throughout their life. Other animals are less fortunate and these animals can need dental treatment every 4-12 months.

WHAT IS DENTAL DISEASE?

Dental disease covers a variety of conditions - the one we most commonly see in cats and dogs is periodontal disease. This is caused by a build-up of food and bacteria in the mouth which leads to calculus formation and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This in turn leads to destruction of the structures that support the teeth (ligaments and bone). Over time the gums become red, swollen and sore, teeth then become loose and may start to fall out. 62

There are 4 stages of dental disease with 0 being a healthy mouth and 4 being severe dental disease. Stages 1 and 2 are potentially reversible with a combination of veterinary treatment and dedicated home care (brushing teeth). Stages 3 and 4 are irreversible and often lead to loss of teeth. In stage 4 dental disease the amount of bacteria in the mouth is so high it can enter the bloodstream and travel through the body and impact on different organs e.g. bacteria settles in the heart valves and causes a disease called endocarditis.

We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist.

It is impossible to examine an animal’s mouth completely when they are awake – the only way to carry out an effective and accurate dental examination is under general anesthetic. You may hear your vet refer to a COHAT – this stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. During a COHAT the vet will examine every tooth with a dental probe and complete a dental chart – the same thing that happens when we go to the dentist. Things noted include how inflamed the gums are, how much calculus build up there is and whether there is any destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. Any missing, fractured or abnormal teeth will also be noted. Following this assessment it may be necessary to carry out dental radiographs (x-rays) to look at the roots of the teeth – this enables the vet to better assess any attachment loss around the teeth and evaluate the roots for any problems e.g. tooth root abscess (the same as in humans). An ultrasonic scaler will be used to carry out scaling of the tooth and under the gum line, the teeth will also be polished. Extractions will be carried out as necessary. To get the best out of any dental treatment you need to brush your animal’s teeth at home, at least 3 times weekly and ideally every day. Our nurses are happy to give advice on how to do this – it’s a great thing to start with young animals as often they accept it easier when younger. If you ever have any concerns about your pet’s dental health the best thing to do is to book an appointment to see your vet where they can assess your pet and discuss any treatment if it is necessary. To book a dental check up for your pet call Vets4Pets North Tyneside on 0191 2963311.
