I
often find that women don’t eat enough protein. We can be so focused on fad diets and losing a stone in a day that our protein intake is neglected. Instead of embarking on fad diets, we should be replacing some of the fats and carbohydrates in our diets with protein, as this makes us feel fuller for longer and in turn will helps us to lose weight. Protein plays such an important part in every cell in your body, for example, your hair and nails are mostly made up of protein. Your body uses protein to make enzymes, hormones and other chemicals in the body and it is also plays a massive part in repairing muscle. When you do strength training, you will retain muscle and also build new muscle. You should then eat enough protein to repair the muscle efficiently, and then your body will burn more calories, as it uses more calories to maintain muscle than it does to maintain body fat! Strength training doesn’t have to be lifting heavy weights but using the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction this can be done at Curves with the hydraulics and experienced coaches. If you are exercising, you need to feed and refuel your body as you would your car, you need to give it enough protein to repair itself, You can’t expect to get results if you don’t give your body the right fuel and nutrition to do the job. It is recommended that a female should eat approximately 1 gram or protein per pound of body weight. So, if you weigh 150lbs, are you eating 150g of protein per day to feed and fuel those muscles? To help burn extra calories? If the answer is no then what happens? In the long term, not eating enough protein will make the body break down your muscles to make up for the lack of protein, this will lead to muscle weakness and energy loss and may even cause pain. Increased intake of protein also helps to lower systolic blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke and is important for the every day regulation of the body’s tissues, organs, building muscle, skin and blood. LOCAL FITNESS STUDIO CLOSES IN ON YET ANOTHER AWARD!
Aaron Phillips, owner of the award winning Ocean Fit fitness business in Whitley Bay
O
cean Fit, based on Whitley Road in the heart of Whitley Bay, have had a very successful start to 2019, and are on the verge of receiving national recognition. Ocean Fit is a private and small team training facility owned and ran by Aaron Phillips. Set up with the intention of giving locals a space to increase their health, fitness and confidence, with a professional yet fun atmosphere, they offer a range of different programmes that cater to all abilities and goals. From their Beach Camp, which has been running consistently for 3 years at 6.30am, to 121 Personal Training, each session is designed to challenge you, leaving you with a sense of achievement after each and every session. They offer a flexible and unique fresh-air based private personal training and fitness experience, as well as sessions in their well-equipped studio. Earlier this year they were nominated for the Best Fitness Business in Tyne and Wear Award, from which we were then short listed. Unfortunately they did not win on this occasion, but a top 5 finish in an extremely competitive category was quite an achievement.
There was more success later in the same week however, as they scooped the North Tyneside Best Business Award, mainly as a result of a huge number of nominations. They were eventually chosen are the winner for their hard work, commitment and passion for fitness and wellbeing. The awards didn’t stop there – Ocean Fit also won Best Whitley Bay Business in the England’s Business Awards. They now go on to represent Whitley Bay in the nationals, the first business to do so, and what a great coup for the town if they could go one step further and claim the national award!

NORTH SHIELDS FISHERMEN’S HERITAGE COMMISSION BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE By Charlie Steel
I
t is a fact that commercial fishing is the UK’s toughest and most dangerous peacetime occupation.
With approximately 12,000 fishermen in the UK, there is evidence that fatal injuries to crews of commercial fishing vessels still remains high. Over the years, many fishermen have sailed beyond the piers of the River Tyne, never to return. They have ventured far into the North Sea fishing grounds and beyond, to provide a living for their families and the community, but many have sadly paid with their lives for what really is ‘The true price of fish’. Until recently, North Shields was one of the few major fishing ports in the UK that did not have a dedicated Fishermen’s Memorial, and as a result, the North Shields
MEMORIAL: ‘Fiddlers Green’ sculpture on North Shields Fish Quay
22
Fishermen’s Heritage Project was created early in 2015. Their main objective was to raise funds to erect a permanent memorial sculpture to those fishermen who lost their lives at sea whilst promoting the long tradition and history of the Fishing industry on which the town of North Shields was founded. Massive public support was shown and following an appeal, donations and contributions soon flooded in from the local community and local businesses. With the help and support of North Tyneside Council, a suitable site on the foreshore near the Fish Quay was identified for the placement of the memorial which was unveiled in a public ceremony on 24th September 2017. The memorial represents a lone fisherman sitting on a mooring bollard reflecting in thought. The site on which it stands has since become known as ‘Fiddlers Green’, which in 19th-century maritime folklore was a mythical place where mariners and fishermen who served their time at sea enjoyed an afterlife of dancing and merriment. The North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project are continuing their work, and in order to build on their success, and complement the memorial sculpture, they have recently commissioned a Book of Remembrance, which is dedicated to those fishermen who have worked out of North Shields and lost their lives at sea. The book also makes ample provision for those Fishermen who have retired from the industry and passed away whilst ashore. The book will take a similar format to the Remembrance Books displayed in local Cemeteries, with each entry being individually inscribed by local calligraphers. All entries in the book will eventually form a historical record for future generations which will be on permanent display later this year in the ‘Discover North Tyneside’ section (Local Studies Library) at North Shields Customer First Centre. Applications for entries in the book are now being invited from all members of the public who may have had a relative or loved one that has worked as a fisherman and sailed beyond the piers of the River Tyne. If you would like to be part of this initiative, we would love to hear from you. Application forms are available from the Discover North Tyneside section (Local Studies Library) at North Shields Customer First Centre, Northumberland Square, North Shields, NE30 1QU or by contacting the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project on; 07810 546162 or 07505 100333 or by Emailing; ccz18@hotmail.co.uk

CLEARING THE CLUTTER Clutter can have a major impact on health and wellbeing. Cath Hindle helps people regain space and organise their belongings as a professional declutterer and organiser.
T
his time last year, Cath Hindle was living a very different life.
The 44 year from Cullercoats explains “I had a busy job, two small children and not much time for anything else.” A period of stress and anxiety forced her to revaluate and use the considerable skills she’d acquired over the past 20 years in organisational and corporate services to her new business Clear the Clutter. “I used to spend my days delivering change management coaching and support people to move forward and get organised within the business. I still do this but on a much more personal level helping people regain space and organise their belongings as a professional declutterer and organiser.” Cath started Clear the Clutter last July but thanks to the recent Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, the concept of decluttering and living with less stuff has really captured people’s interest. Cath says: “I don’t work like Marie Kondo but I do encourage clients to really think if an item creates a positive emotion for them and encourage them to get rid of those that don’t. I also love the way she folds clothes and use that method with clients all the time. “ Cath is a member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers and has recently completed training with the Senior Move Partnership specialising in helping older

people downsize and move. Her clients range from busy families, people who struggle to let things go, small businesses who want clearer workspaces, house movers and anyone looking for support in sorting spaces that have got on top of them. Clutter isn’t often recognised as a source of stress but it can have a major impact on health and wellbeing. As well as overtaking physical space, clutter can overtake
the mind as it causes the senses to work overtime to try to process what needs to be done. This makes it difficult to focus on tasks. It causes frustration when items can’t be located quickly or easily and can make people feel guilty or embarrassed that they are not able to “get organised” or invite friends round because of the mess. Clutter creates anxiety when people feel that they are unable to get on top of it or get to the bottom of the pile. Cath says: “Decluttering and organising is immensely satisfying. Think about how you feel when you’ve had a wardrobe clearout – the sense of satisfaction and pleasure at an organised space and the virtue of being able to hand stuff to a charity shop. I get this everyday working with clients and the feeling grows with each new space we tackle.” One highlight from the past year has been a partnership with St Oswald’s hospice. “Unless the client supports another charity, the stuff I declutter goes to St Oswald’s. Each full charity bag raises, on average, £20 for the hospice, so I’m proud to be working with such a worthy cause. It also means that I operate my business very ethically as I always try to find a good home for things rather than sending it to landfill. Over the next few editions, Cath will be providing decluttering tips and tricks of trade. PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM FUTURE CARE FEES Your home may be at risk
I
n the past five years one million family homes have had to be sold to pay for care. Homes that were going to be the children’s inheritance.
Should you need to go into care in later life, your assets will be means tested by the local authority. If the value of your assets, including your home, exceeds £23,250 you will have to pay full care fees. The average cost of care is now in excess of £30,000 a year.
HOW CAN WE LEGALLY PROTECT OUR HOME FROM CARE FEES?
There are many 'myths' about protecting your home, such as giving it away to your children (not recommended) the 7 year rule (applies to Inheritance Tax NOT care fees) Common Law Marriage (no such thing in the UK) etc. It is important to receive the correct advice when considering how to protect, so local authorities will not regard it as deliberate deprivation of assets.
MIRROR WILLS
If in your wills you leave everything to each other, and then to the children (mirror wills) you may unintentionally gift the full home to the local authority, should surviving spouse go into care. The children could then be left with very little.
PROPERTY TRUST WILLS LEGALLY PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM CARE FEES
Instead of leaving your share of the home to each other on first death, with Property Trust Wills, you each leave your share of the home in trust (ring fenced) for the children, stating they are not to receive it during the lifetime of the surviving spouse, who retains the FULL USE of the home. Should surviving spouse go into care, that half of the home in trust is legally protected from care fees. Guaranteeing at least half the value of your home for your children. If surviving spouse does not go into care, your full home passes to the children on the death of surviving spouse as per your wills. Spouse and children could be the executors, trustees and beneficiaries.
By spending a few hundred pounds now on Property Trust Wills, you can legally protect at least half the value of your home for your children. The cost also includes free probate advice at the time it is needed. If requested, money left on first death to surviving spouse, could also be protected by Money Trusts written into your wills. Surviving spouse could access capital and income from the trust. If surviving spouse goes into care, the money in the trust is safeguarded from care fees. Spouse and children could be the trustees and beneficiaries. Both the Property and Money Trusts protect your children’s inheritance in the event of: Surviving spouse remarrying, Going bankrupt, Changing their will, Children divorcing, IHT mitigation etc. Ask our adviser to explain. All trust wills are drafted by our experienced solicitors who specialise in this field. Trust Wills do not come into effect until first death. Whilst both of you are alive you are still able to sell your home and buy another, spend your money or save your money. Your assets remain under your control. We also recommend Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) which enable your family to legally manage your affairs for your benefit, should you become unable to. Without LPA’s the Court of Protection would take control of your finances. The Local Authority would take control of your welfare, including deciding where you would live. LPA’s can only be made whilst you have mental capacity. They are important. Please ask our adviser to explain. Our service is fully inclusive, our qualified solicitors, who are insured and regulated Members of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) will draft your trust wills to reflect your own requirements. We personally deliver the completed documents to you. Our adviser would also oversee and guide you through the signing process, as it is important that legal documents are signed and witnessed correctly to ensure validity. If you have any concerns, and would like to know more, please CALL US on 0191 206 4007 to arrange a free home or office appointment. NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS
CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE
NEW IDEAS FOR NORTHUMBERLAND SQUARE
A
ll recent expert reports on town centres and high streets have recommended that local authorities and other stakeholders such as the Chamber need to think more creatively about the purpose of these areas. The move towards internet shopping, out-of-town centres, business rates and the uncertain economic environment have made life more difficult for the traditional offering; rather, the reports advise, these areas need to reinvent themselves as community centres, places to meet, with a mixed family-friendly offering, including general retail, niche retail, food and drink, and different leisure offerings. Residents and visitors need to have a variety of reasons for spending time in town centres. Shopping is, of course, one good reason, as is meeting up in cafes, bars and restaurants. Organised events can be another reason and we have spent some time recently thinking about what sort of additional events might be planned, using the wonderful Georgian Square in the middle of our town centre, Northumberland Square. The Square is owned and maintained by the Council but they allow it to be used for properly organised events. There are two well-established and very popular events which take place in the Square each year: the Proper Food and Drink Festival in May (this year, the
4th, 5th and 6th) and the Victorian Christmas Market in December; in each case, residents and visitors are attracted to what’s on offer in the Square and they also use the opportunity to spend time in the shops and other outlets in the town centre. We are keen to see other events take place in the Square, as each event tends both to offer something different to those living in, working in or visiting North Shields and to bring more people into the town centre. Suggestions made by Chamber members and others recently include an open air film show, a wellness weekend, a teddy bears picnic, a yarn bomb, a Friday evening post-work food and drink event and a music event. In each case, apart from ensuring that the Council are happy with the arrangements, there are two main challenges: someone (or perhaps a small team) needs to take on the responsibility of planning, coordinating and running the event; and some funds are usually needed to meet expenses - meeting these challenges is not always possible. So if you have an idea for an event, or think that you could take on the organisation of an event, or think that you might be able to provide some funding, for example, in return for business marketing or profileraising, do get in touch with us (just email the Chair at Miles.walton@yahoo.co.uk).

FLORISTRY TASTER SESSIONS
ENHANCING FOOTFALL FROM THE INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER TERMINAL In North Shields, we are very fortunate that the passenger side of the Port of Tyne’s operations is based in our town. Passengers from various parts of the north and from Scotland, with or without cars, take the daily DFDS ferry to Amsterdam; and we welcome to our area passengers from the Netherlands and other mainland European countries. And from spring to autumn every year, cruise ships either start and end their cruises here or visit the terminal as part of their cruise schedule. This year, almost 60 cruises will either start at or visit North Shields, bringing tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world. This means, of course, that large numbers of visitors pass through the terminal and North Shields. Last year, supported by the Port of Tyne, the Chamber produced a short guide and map aimed at the crew of the ferries and cruise ships; this gave brief details of local shopping, bars and restaurants and the transport connections. The guide was also picked up by some of the cruise passengers who had decided not to take the organised tours to attractions such as Alnwick Castle and Hadrian’s Wall, choosing instead to explore the local area. The Chamber is in the process of revising the guide for the main 2019 season. Visitor feedback obtained by Chamber member JCB Tourism Solutions has indicated that it would be useful for the guide to give more prominence to, for example, the Royal Quays area, Tynemouth Village and our local heritage sites, such as Tynemouth Castle and Priory, Fiddler’s Green, the Spanish City and Segedunum. We hope that this will bring further footfall to many parts of North Shields and other parts of North Tyneside. Chamber members YourPrint Department and Rusby Media are involved in the redraft and redesign; it will be available to ships from the beginning of April and can also then be seen on our website northshieldschamber.co.uk

GROW YOUR OWN With the increased interest in self sufficiency and organic produce, it’s a great time to try growing your own fruit and veg at home. Here’s some tips on how to start from PlantsPlus Garden Centre...
W
e’ve said it before and we’re going to say it again - growing fruit and veg is IN!
No longer associated with those in the countryside or who are naturally green fingered, GLEE 2018 (Garden, Leisure & Equipment Exhibition) referenced a study that revealed 43% of gardeners under 40 grow their own vegetables compared to 32% of over 60s. The benefits far surpass just having food on the table: You can keep it organic; it’s not space dependant; it’s healthy, both the physical nature of the task and the freshest nutrients you could put in your body; it’s educational and fun for all ages.
SIZE DOESN’T MATTER
Urban gardeners are bringing grow-your-own into the 21st century which means there are plenty of creative ways to plant and harvest them, even if you have limited space. So forget about thinking that you need a large patch of ground in a garden or an allotment, you can get started now even if you live in a small apartment.
START WITH HERBS
If you‘re having your first thoughts about dabbling in grow-your-own but are daunted about where to start,
36
“
When you pick that first juicy, red tomato, you’ll be hooked!
” Nursery Production Manager, Mark ensures that the PlantsPlus Nursery is bursting with colour.
begin with herbs. They’ll be perfectly happy by your kitchen window and if you look after them well instead of treating them as disposable, they will keep rewarding you for months to come - trimming them will actually encourage more growth. Whilst they may look tropical with their bright and sculptural fruit, chilli plants can thrive on sunny window sills too!
DO A SWAP
Swap the flowers in your patio planters or window boxes for vegetables. Grow all of your salad greens in one container such as lettuce, spring onions rocket and spinach. Planted away from the ground you’ll have less problems waith pests such as slugs and snails, and if they’re on a balcony you’ll definitely not catch any rabbits or deer having a nibble of them! Although great for restricted spaces, just be aware that smaller containers will need more watering. If you want to make things even easier, there are ranges of self watering systems on the market such as easy drip systems that you can place in your pots to relieve the fear of over or under watering your crops.
JUST DO IT!
We’ve saved our best tip for last and it’s a tried and tested one that works for most people… buy some seeds or some starter veg and just have the confidence to put them in the ground and give grow-your-own a shot. Like everything else, practice makes perfect and when you finally pick that first juicy, red tomato from your window planter and taste how much more flavoursome they are compared to the supermarkets, you’ll be hooked! Nothing will beat being able to plate up the rewards of your own hard work.

AUTHENTIC INDONESIAN CUISINE AT SIMPSONS CAFÉ We visit Simpsons Café in Whitley Lodge to sample some home cooked authentic Indonesian dishes..
S
impsons Café and Bistro brings a mix of British Classic dishes and Authentic Indonesian Street Food to the area, with a mouth-watering menu and a completely new look.
The premises, based on Claremont Crescent, has played host to several cafes in recent years, but Simpsons Bistro brings something completely unique to the area. The café has undergone a complete makeover, resulting in a clean, modern look to compliment to contemporary menu. The menu itself is a fusion of traditional British dishes and authentic Indonesian offerings, ranging from light bites and snacks to hearty main courses. The bistro offers a wide selection of breakfast options, ranging from the traditional full English, to omelettes, eggs on toast and the popular bacon and sausage butties. Lunchtime options include the special homemade deluxe burger, fajitas, sandwiches, paninis, jacket
potatoes, salads and a range of sweet treats. Then there is the Indonesian twist. The authentic Indonesian selections, all freshly made with their unique blend of ingredients, include nasi goreng, mie goreng, Indonesian chicken curry, beef rendag, and a number of authentic soups and stir fry dishes. On our visit we opted for the Full House from the Indonesian Specials menu. With both of us being new to Indonesian food, we thought this option would allow us the chance to sample a selection of dishes and get a real flavour for Indonesian food. The Full House opens with some vegetable fritters served with sweet chilli dipping sauce, quickly followed by a very generous serving of Wonton soup which was light but comforting and packed with flavour. The main serving was a selection of Beef Rendang, Chicken Curry, Gulai Kambling (Lamb Curry) and Japanese Stir Fry (Prime Rib Eye), along with Indonesian rice and noodles. Each authentic dish had its own distinctive favour, something to please everyone. My favourite was the Japanese Stir Fry which was melt in the mouth tender and packed real flavour. The Full House is plenty for 2 people, even with healthy appetites and, priced at only £27.00, is fantastic value and gives you a real sample of the best dishes from the wonderful country of Indonesia. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

ENJOYING INDEPENDENT LIFE WITH EOTHEN HOMES In 2016 Eothen Homes, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home in Wallsend for people living with dementia. On the site are eight apartments available to rent, which have been specifically designed for the over 75s. Here residents Doreen and Denton Gunn, both 83, tell us why it’s a lovely place to live.
E
othen Homes Wallsend has secured a reputation as a groundbreaking dementia facility, ideal for those who wish to live independently within a safe and secure environment. Why did you choose Wallsend and why Eothen Homes particularly? We were both living in another home not far from Wallsend and heard about Eothen Homes through Denton’s niece, who decided it was the perfect place for her Mum (his sister) to stay. Denton has Alzheimer’s and we knew a time would come when we’d need additional help. While we live independently, we are now in the perfect place to source that, as needed. As for Eothen Homes, it had a nice feel and although we didn’t choose it for its Christian ethos, it’s nice to be somewhere where the team really cares about the residents, which is clear from the start. What’s good about the design of the home and in particular your flat? The design of Eothen Homes, Wallsend is lovely. There are landscaped gardens we can enjoy and anyone living in the flats has the use of a private lift to take us up to the second floor. There is a roof top area, which will be nice when the weather is better, a cafe and also an atrium with birds, which we enjoy. Cleaning services, laundry and meals are available at a cost but we don’t use those facilities at the moment as we like to go out and do our own shopping and cleaning.
There are lots of buses we can catch nearby when we want to have a day out locally. We love our flat. We can spend our time together, it’s really calm and cosy and we have decorated it to our own taste. The kitchen is twice the size of the one we had before, the bathroom is roomy and the bedroom is spacious too. It has everything we need really. We’re both looking forward to our daughter visiting from Australia next year so we can show it off to her. Tell us about the team at Eothen The team here are very kind and go out of the way to ensure we are ok. We also get invited to meetings downstairs where we can learn about any activities taking place and give ideas about what we’d like to do. We like to walk at Richardson Dees Park, which is just over the road but if we want to do something different, everyone does whatever they can to make it happen. It’s a very nice place to live. SKY TV'S PETE GRAVES UNCOVERS THE REAL LIFE STORIES BEHIND LOCAL NATIONAL LOTTERY FUNDING Northumberland native Pete investigates how ÂŁ5 million of National Lottery funding is spent locally in new online mini-series
S
ky TV's Pete Graves, a Northumberland native, has fronted the brand-new mini-series which is all about amazing community projects that work tirelessly to improve the lives of local people across Northumberland. The project, called Untold Stories: Northumberland, films four National Lottery funded projects and looks at the stories behind the incredible people who make them happen, and those who benefit from them. This includes a project from Ashington. Untold Stories: Northumberland lifts the lid on how National Lottery funding is spent locally to benefit the people of Northumberland. Each of the four short-form documentary-style episodes is dedicated to an initiative that has made a life-changing impact on its local community with the help of The National Lottery. They include: Blyth Tall Ship, a pioneering project that sees young people in the area recruited to restore an original tall ship whilst gaining valuable engineering skills; Hauxley Nature Reserve, a stunning community space built and run entirely by volunteers; Museums Northumberland's bait, an art project and Hexham Youth Initiative, a safe space for young people across the Hexham area. The documentaries are presented by Sky Sports presenter, Pete Graves. A passionate Northumberland native, Pete returned home and visited projects funded by the National Lottery to meet some of the driving forces behind each good cause and the everyday people whose lives have been transformed and enhanced since having access to these much-needed resources. Among those featured in the mini-series are individuals 48
who have overcome anxiety, depression and struggles with employment. Jonathan Tuchner from the National Lottery said: "We are passionate about supporting projects and initiatives that we know have a real, tangible impact on people's lives. Untold Stories: Northumberland sheds a light on the brilliant initiatives - and the local people behind them - that are using National Lottery funding to make a significant difference. " Pete Graves, presenter said: "I am so proud to call Northumberland home - and after visiting each of the incredible projects featured in Untold Stories: Northumberland, I'm even prouder. Having the chance to see first-hand the impact they have on the local community and people's lives, has been brilliant. I hope people across the area are as moved and inspired as I am after watching the series!" The National Lottery has people at its heart, funding amazing projects that help local people in Northumberland. In 2017, the National Lottery invested more than ÂŁ5 million into local good causes in Northumberland, and since 1994 has funded more than 3,800 in the area, assisting with the enrichment and impacting thousands of lives. Untold Stories: Northumberland are available across the National Lottery's social channels with a new episode uploaded every week. PROPOSALS FOR HISTORIC BUILDING FORMERLY USED BY STING UNVEILED
F
resh plans have been revealed to breathe new life into an historic Wallsend landmark that helped to launch the career of music legend Sting. North Tyneside Council is poised to agree a deal to hand the Buddle building over to Adavo Property – the property developer and listed building specialist behind the regeneration of the Town Hall in Wallsend. The much-loved Grade II listed former Buddle Arts Centre is where Sting used to practice his music in his early years. The proposed £1.5million restoration includes creating space for work, events and conferences, with the development expected to create more than 100 jobs. Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “I am delighted at the prospect of a new lease of life for this fantastic building, which is very close to the hearts of everyone in Wallsend and the surrounding area. Some may have started their school life there and then it was an arts centre where many had fantastic experiences. Mark Black, Chief Executive, Adavo Property, said: “The Buddle is an exciting project to be part of and we

are raring to go. The site has a rich history and many of Wallsend’s famous sons and daughters have passed through its doors. It is a fine building, very prominent in the area and means a great deal to many local residents. The Town Hall is now a thriving community hub in its own right, with Wallsend’s next generation of companies growing, creating new jobs and expanding quickly. We look forward to The Buddle becoming the next chapter in Wallsend’s continued resurgence.” The building was originally a local school built in 1876 before opening as a community arts centre in 1981, hosting plays, music and exhibitions. It later became a hub for creative industries. It was named after John Buddle, a prominent mining engineer and manager of Wallsend Colliery during the early 1800s. Having used the venue for regular practice sessions, Sting also put on a special concert at the venue in 1991 and even paid for a new sound system for the centre.

RESTORATION UNDERWAY OF 200-YEAR-OLD LISTED BUILDINGS IN THE HEART OF NORTH SHIELDS
N
orthumberland Square is the most complete example of a Georgian Square on Tyneside and a £5.6m scheme has now started to restore a row of terraced properties on the north side of the square to their original use as homes. The three-storey building, built between 1810 and 1816, has been unoccupied for more than 10 years and the interior is largely derelict. The Grade II listed façade, portico entrance, and a handful of original features are still intact and will be preserved including ornate plaster mouldings and, in one room, a cornice design featuring a pack of hounds chasing a fox which Heritage England has called ‘one of a kind’. The redevelopment will see a total of 28 new build houses and apartments created, with secure courtyard parking and gardens to the rear. The project is being delivered by Aurora Properties, acting on behalf of North Tyneside Council, with construction work being done by Compass Developments Ltd. North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE, said: “It’s a new development for a very old and valued square. I hope that in a year’s time we will see it starting
to come back to how it used to be all those years ago. There aren’t many squares like this in the country. It’s very special and I am sure that when it’s all done the people of North Shields will feel very proud.” The square, a conservation area, is considered to be the nearest thing Tyneside has to the celebrated Georgian squares of London, Bath, Edinburgh and Dublin. Local historian, Mike Scott, from the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, gave the redevelopment his approval. He said: “I think this project to restore the building is a wonderful opportunity to upgrade the square and link into the past, because the building has a fascinating history. It’s a particularly interesting project because the building has been recycled once before and what you see standing today, all the sandstone, is from Wakefield House, which was built around 1796.” Stephen O’Neill, of Compass Developments, said: “It’s a large project, very prestigious, in a beautiful area of North Shields and one of the original Georgian squares. The project will take an estimated 18 months to complete and is expected to increase footfall for local businesses and complement regeneration efforts in the town.
