UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONAL EATING Sarah Howe, Director of 3 Curves fitness facility’s in the North East and a mother of two explains why your emotions may be making you overeat
D
o you tend to eat or overeat because you are happy? Sad? Bored? Anxious? Upset or Stressed? You’re not alone. It’s estimated that 75% of overeating stems from our emotions.
From an early age, you may have learned to use food as a way to cope with your feelings. Short-term this may provide relief, but it doesn’t address the root of the problem. And long-term, emotional eating may lead to weight gain because the comfort foods we often choose are high in calories, sugar, salt and fat. Experts define emotional eating as eating in a response to an emotion, rather than hunger, in order to suppress or pacify emotions. Stress at work, conflict within a relationship, recent health diagnosis, sleep deprivation, family finances, low self-esteem and other situations may lead to emotional eating. For most people, it’s the day to day stresses in life that lead to emotional eating. But why do we turn to food for comfort? The comfort foods we choose are foods we associate with pleasurable memories or experiences. This can lead to a vicious cycle – you have a bad day, you eat a bar of chocolate because that’s what you may have been given when you had a bad day at school, guilt sets in, and now you feel like you’ve sabotaged your diet, so you take another bite of chocolate. But there is good news! You don’t have to turn to food. With these steps, you can process your emotions in a healthy way without turning to food. It’s time to break this cycle because YOU CAN! Here are some tips to overcome emotional eating. • Identify what emotion causes you to overeat. At Curves, we call these Cues to identify your triggers that cause you to overeat. • Before you eat, take a few minutes to understand how you are feeling. Are YOU in control or are your emotions in control? Before you eat, make sure you’re in a good place emotionally. • Connect with your Community. Remember, 75% of overeating stems from emotions. You’re not alone! Connect with other women at your local Curves club, 18

online through the message boards, or call a friend for support, You can also follow myself @buffmammy on Instagram for support Battle Boredom. If you’re feeling bored or lonely, invite a friend to go on a walk with you or go to Curves. Or, grab a good book, watch a funny movie, volunteer in your community, visit a local museum or cultivate a new hobby. Toss out tempting foods. Create a fresh start for yourself and throw away any comfort foods. There is no reason to test your willpower! Instead, keep healthy snacks on hand like carrots & hummus or celery & cottage cheese. Exercise regularly. Exercising regularly can actually boost your mood. All the more reason to visit Curves and walk regularly! Satisfy cravings healthfully. Try making a lower calorie version of your favourite foods. Or, when you’re craving something sweet, choose an option from the Dessert guide on Curves Complete. Simply replace one of your snacks with a dessert choice. Delay Gratification. Instead of giving into your cravings, drink a glass of water and wait 20 minutes to see if you still want the food. Rather than saying “I can’t have that” use a positive phrase such as “I don’t eat that.” Or, say “later” rather than “never” so that you don’t feel deprived. Reward your progress healthfully. Buy that new top you’ve been eyeing, invite a friend to a spa or buy a new bike. Reward your weight loss efforts with something other than food. Get enough Sleep. Sleep deprivation can make it harder to tame your emotions and resist cravings. Aim for 7-9 hours a night of sleep each night.
We have the power to stop emotional eating by taking one step at a time – identify the emotion, find an alternative, and cultivate a new habit. Remember, by understanding what leads to emotional eating, we can take the necessary steps to change it. For more information on Curves Fitness visit www.curves.eu/uk

STUDENTS SHOW PEDAL POWER AS SUMMER OF CYCLING DECLARED IN NORTH TYNESIDE
Y
oung cyclists are hoping to inspire others to explore North Tyneside on two wheels this summer after coming out on top in a national challenge. John Spence Community High School has been crowned the top secondary school in the Sustrans Big Pedal 2019 5-day challenge. The challange is aimed at encouraging young people from all over the country to cycle, walk or ride a scooter to and from school. More than 86 per cent of all pupils from John Spence took part in the challenge, which was held over five days – the highest of all the schools which took part. A total of 586 children cycled and 112 rode in by scooter throughout the week. There was further good news in North Tyneside as Monkseaton Middle School finished fifth overall with a score of over 72 per cent – the school was also the only one in the North East to close its street to cars for a day during the challenge. It is now hoped that their achievements will inspire others to take to two wheels as North Tyneside Council declares its first-ever Summer of Cycling. The campaign is aimed at encouraging everyone, no matter their age or ability, to explore the borough by bike. Cllr Sarah Day, North Tyneside Council’s Cycling Champion, said: “This is the place to be if you’re looking to get out and about in the borough on two wheels this summer. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are or how experienced you are at riding a bike – there’s something for everyone. We also have a wonderful network of waggonways so there really is no reason not to take to two wheels and enjoy all the benefits that cycling brings. “Our Summer of Cycling is a great way to shine a light on all of this and we look forward to seeing many of you get involved. It’s also fantastic to see how well the 22
students at John Spence have done in the Sustrans Big Pedal challenge – they’ve all fully committed themselves to the challenge and are a great example to others. Adam Pilkington, Director of Sport at John Spence Community High School, said: “We are fortunate many pupils from John Spence come to school by bike. It’s the easiest and quickest way for them to travel the one to three miles from their homes, no matter what the weather. We regularly have over 100 bikes and scooters in our bike sheds which are well maintained and secure. Large groups of friends travel together and the local roads and cycle tracks help their journeys. “We are proud of our cycling numbers and are always keen to support and promote events like the council’s Summer of Cycling, which I’m sure will be a brilliant initiative.” The Summer of Cycling festival will be launched with a free family fun day at Richardson Dees Park in Wallsend between 11am and 2pm on Wednesday 28 May. Visitors to the ‘Big Bike Day’ launch event will be able to get a health check for their bike and make a tasty smoothie using pedal power. There will also be Bikeability and Learn to Ride sessions, police security marking for bikes and the day will be rounded off with an off-road family bike ride. Throughout the rest of the summer there will be various activities and events including family fun days, BMX days, learn to ride sessions for pre-school children, Bikeability safety training, guided rides, adapted bike sessions for people with a disability and police bike marking and bike MOTs. For more information and how to book onto activities: ‘Summer of Cycling’ and look out for regular updates on Facebook and @NTCouncilTeam and @GoSmarterNT on Twitter.

LOOKING AFTER LOCAL EYES FOR OVER 40 YEARS J. A. HICKS OPTOMETRIST, A TRADITIONAL YET MODERN PRACTICE AND AN ESTABLISHED PART OF NORTH SHIELDS LIFE
J
.A. Hicks Optometrist began life as Richardson’s Opticians which was located by the train station in North Shields. After a brief time in a prefab near what is now the Co-op, the business became J.A.Hicks and relocated to Nile Street around 1978. They have been there ever since and they like to think of themselves as an established part of North Shields life. Their staff have all been with them for quite a while too. Janet, one of their Optical Assistants, clocked up 40 years with the company in 2017 and they will be celebrating the same length of service for Catherine, their Dispensing Optician, later this year. Nicola, their other Optical Assistant, joined the team a mere 30 years ago and Optometrist, Sylvia, took over from Mrs Hicks in 2009 (having qualified as an Optometrist in 1982). They pride themselves on being a friendly and approachable team. For kids, they offer appointments after school or on Saturday mornings and run dedicated ‘childrens’ days’ in the holidays with snacks and juice to keep everyone amused. They have a fantastic range of children’s
24
frames to choose from, and because they use a local workshop, glasses can be made up within a few daysand the inevitable repairs sorted out quickly too. They can also arrange a familiarisation visit for children (or adults) with special needs or autism and can allow a longer appointment if required. When it comes to adults, they offer full NHS or private examinations including retinal photography. They have designer brands such as timeless RayBans, less well known styles such as Ronit Furst (think Prue Leith on Bake Off) and an extensive range right through to budget styles. They have something to suit every pocket. With Summer just around the corner, Sunglasses should be on everyone’s minds – Studies have shown that exposure to ultra- violet light may be linked to eye conditions such as cataract and macular degeneration (AMD). It is therefore vital to protect your eyes in the sun. Being outdoors may help prevent shortsightedness in children, but don’t forget that their eyes need protecting too. How about contact lenses? There
are lenses to suit more prescriptions than ever before and they are easier to wear than you might think – give it a go- J.A. Hicks offer a free trial, so you’ve nothing to lose (except your specs). Optometrist, Sylvia, works with the Charity ‘Sightservice ‘ in Gateshead, which helps people who have a visual impairment. This means she is ideally qualified to offer advice if you have ‘low vision’- (if your vision can’t be corrected fully with glasses or contact lenses) Simple advice about lighting and contrast, or the use of magnifiers, can make life that little bit easier. Just ask and we will help if we can. So why not pop down and see what the practice can offer you and your family? They pride themselves on being traditional – but not old fashioned- and have many years of combined experience to help and guide you.

5 TOP TIPS TO START YOU ON A DECLUTTERING JOURNEY CATH HINDLE IS A PROFESSIONAL DECLUTTERING AND ORGANISING EXPERT BASED IN CULLERCOATS
Cath Hindle
I
f I had £1 each time somebody told me that they couldn’t get rid of something because their mother in law / friend / next door neighbour had given it to them; I’d be writing this from the Maldives. Gift giving and receiving is one of the key reasons we allow clutter into our homes and one of the key things to tackle if you’d like calm and ordered living space. I hear many reasons for not getting rid of things and I remind clients of a quote that has proved invaluable to me in my own quest for a simplified, organised free life: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” William Morris One of the most joyous parts of my business is finding the right home for unwanted things. Whether you recycle, give to charity, pass on to a friend or actually use the dustbin, here are a few top tips to start you on a decluttering journey: 1. START SMALL - don’t overwhelm yourself with a huge project to start with. I often ease clients into decluttering by starting off with that drawer in the kitchen – you know, the one with flyers, sellotape, a few elastic bands, an old fuse, phone charger and perhaps some cutlery. By starting off with a small space or area, you quickly get to see and feel the satisfaction of clearing and organising. 28
2. DON’T BUY STORAGE BOXES - it’s more clutter!! Friends of my facebook page will be familiar with #nostorageboxes. Existing baskets, shoe boxes, clear cupboards and drawers generally mean that the storage space is there – you just need to use it effectively. 3. YES, NO, MAYBE - there are lots of strategies on how to successfully declutter. Mine is to sort whichever space you are organising into three – “yes”, “no” and “maybe” piles. When finished, re-sort your “yes” pile into stuff going back into the space you have cleared and stuff to be put back elsewhere. Sort your “no” pile into things to sell, recycle, re home or throw away. Then turn your attention to your “maybe” pile and try to reduce it further by adding to your sorted “no” stuff. Whatever is leftover, think about the William Morris quote above to decide what you actually need to keep. 4. IDENTIFYING THE CLUTTER – The following highlights some of the things you should let go of now: Items you “should” use but don’t (exercise bikes). Things that cost a lot but you still don’t use (often clothes). Anything broken or inoperable that you are planning on fixing
• • •
• • • • • •
but haven’t (lamps) Heirlooms – see gift guilt (always pictures) Anything uncomfortable (see expensive clothes point) Duplicates – just in case. Magazines you’ll never get round to reading. Old electronics especially cables. Out of date paperwork
5. REMOVE IT FROM YOUR HOME The biggest mistake people make when embarking on decluttering is to think that once they’ve sorted their stuff, the job is done. Don’t make grand plans to put stuff on Ebay if you haven’t got the time or inclination. Make sure you take stuff to the charity shop and don’t just leave it in the boot of your car (and make sure you gift aid – it’s very satisfying). If passing on to friends or family, actually hand the item over. Whatever you decide to do, make sure the stuff leaves your house. PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM FUTURE CARE FEES Your home may be at risk
I
n the past five years one million family homes have had to be sold to pay for care. Homes that were going to be the children’s inheritance.
Should you need to go into care in later life, your assets will be means tested by the local authority. If the value of your assets, including your home, exceeds £23,250 you will have to pay full care fees. The average cost of care is now in excess of £30,000 a year.
HOW CAN WE LEGALLY PROTECT OUR HOME FROM CARE FEES?
There are many 'myths' about protecting your home, such as giving it away to your children (not recommended) the 7 year rule (applies to Inheritance Tax NOT care fees) Common Law Marriage (no such thing in the UK) etc. It is important to receive the correct advice when considering how to protect, so local authorities will not regard it as deliberate deprivation of assets.
MIRROR WILLS
If in your wills you leave everything to each other, and then to the children (mirror wills) you may unintentionally gift the full home to the local authority, should surviving spouse go into care. The children could then be left with very little.
PROPERTY TRUST WILLS LEGALLY PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM CARE FEES
Instead of leaving your share of the home to each other on first death, with Property Trust Wills, you each leave your share of the home in trust (ring fenced) for the children, stating they are not to receive it during the lifetime of the surviving spouse, who retains the FULL USE of the home. Should surviving spouse go into care, that half of the home in trust is legally protected from care fees. Guaranteeing at least half the value of your home for your children. If surviving spouse does not go into care, your full home passes to the children on the death of surviving spouse as per your wills. Spouse and children could be the executors, trustees and beneficiaries.
By spending a few hundred pounds now on Property Trust Wills, you can legally protect at least half the value of your home for your children. The cost also includes free probate advice at the time it is needed. If requested, money left on first death to surviving spouse, could also be protected by Money Trusts written into your wills. Surviving spouse could access capital and income from the trust. If surviving spouse goes into care, the money in the trust is safeguarded from care fees. Spouse and children could be the trustees and beneficiaries. Both the Property and Money Trusts protect your children’s inheritance in the event of: Surviving spouse remarrying, Going bankrupt, Changing their will, Children divorcing, IHT mitigation etc. Ask our adviser to explain. All trust wills are drafted by our experienced solicitors who specialise in this field. Trust Wills do not come into effect until first death. Whilst both of you are alive you are still able to sell your home and buy another, spend your money or save your money. Your assets remain under your control. We also recommend Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) which enable your family to legally manage your affairs for your benefit, should you become unable to. Without LPA’s the Court of Protection would take control of your finances. The Local Authority would take control of your welfare, including deciding where you would live. LPA’s can only be made whilst you have mental capacity. They are important. Please ask our adviser to explain. Our service is fully inclusive, our qualified solicitors, who are insured and regulated Members of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) will draft your trust wills to reflect your own requirements. We personally deliver the completed documents to you. Our adviser would also oversee and guide you through the signing process, as it is important that legal documents are signed and witnessed correctly to ensure validity. The Chamber has published a guide to the North Shields area. This is primarily aimed at those arriving here by sea. Ships dock at North Shields on a regular basis: the DFDS ferries to and from Ijmuiden, cruise ships either on turnaround or transit and cargo ships of various kinds. These ships bring large and small numbers of crew and, on the transit cruise visits, often large numbers of passengers who have decided to explore the immediate area. Feedback from crew and passengers indicated that it would be useful to have information on the heritage of the area and on places to shop. The guide aims to do this. It is sent by the Port of Tyne to the crew via the ships’ agents. Passengers who have decided to stay in the local area can pick it up at the information tent on leaving the ship. But it may be of interest to others and it can downloaded or printed from www.northshieldschamber.co.uk s ent Reg race Ter
The North East England Chamber of Commerce represents a wide variety of large and small businesses in the north east. Last year, they published an excellent report entitled “Town Centres: Planning for the Future”. Phase 2 of this project involves working with towns and local authorities and North Shields has been chosen as the first town they would like to work with. Their proposal is to offer additional support to our independent retailers. Support may come in a number of ways, including workshops and advice sessions (but it should be noted that this is not an offer of funding). Both NEECC staff and some of their members may be involved. To make this work, they need to know what areas of support would be of interest and useful to our retailers. Suggestions so far from Chamber members and others include: leasing/tenancy issues, legal issues, budgeting for VAT, change of use, business rates (including rates reductions); finance and cash flow; sites and premises; stock control; marketing; expanding from one outlet to two; use of online sales to support high street sales and use of social media to let customers know about latest offers. If you are an independent retailer in any part of North Shields and would like to add to the list, please email Miles Walton on miles.walton@yahoo.co.uk.

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT FAIR
BEDFORD STREET EVENTS
Those who have come into North Shields town centre on recent Wednesdays will have noticed that there has been live music and stalls selling a variety of clothes, crafts and food in the pedestrianised area of Bedford Street. The Bedford Street Events have been organised by the North Shields Chamber, with the support of North Tyneside Council and the Beacon Centre. “When we visited Merthyr Tydfil as part of the Carnegie Twinning Programme, we saw that they organised successful events like this and that they were an incentive to people from the town and further afield to come into the centre”, explained Miles Walton, Chair of the Chamber. “This encouraged us to do something similar, albeit on a smaller basis. We also noted that all the recent reports on High Streets have recommended that towns organise more events to increase footfall.” The first series will be on every Wednesday for six weeks (they started on the 8th of May). The stalls are open from 10.00am until 4.00pm and North Shields-based guitarist/singer, Larry Page, plays between 12 noon and 3.00 pm. The Chamber is keen to involve local businesses in the Events, where possible. If you would like to know more, please contact the Chamber Chair, Miles Walton, on miles.walton@yahoo.co.uk
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, but aren’t quite sure what opportunities there are available locally, the Beacon Centre in partnership with the charity Voda, are to host a Volunteer Recruitment Fair on Saturday 8th June between 10am-3pm. So if you’re looking to make a difference or gain new skills and boost your confidence, there will be a host of stalls and information available from a range of Volunteering and community organisations who all involve volunteers in their work. In addition, throughout the day there will be members of Voda’s friendly staff team on hand to answer any questions you may have.
FINE ART STUDENT EXHIBITION
Later on in June, the Centre will also be unveiling a stunning new exhibition created by Fine Art students studying on higher education programmes - HND (full time) and HNC (part-time) at the Creative Studios at Queen Alexandra College. In all, there are sixteen paintings, each an impressive six feet square in size. The works, which are to be displayed in the main square of the Shopping Centre, will provide customers with a vivid display of artistic enjoyment and the eye catching designs will certainly enhance the Northumberland Square entrance to the Centre. Look out for further information on the exhibition opening on the Centre’s facebook page www.facebook.com/beaconcentrenorthshields

INTRODUCING...
THE RIVER COASTERS
T
he River Coasters are an indie two-piece based in Tynemouth. They are releasing a new EP this Summer, alongside a free launch gig at The Exchange in North Shields on July 20th. Here, Sam (lead vocals) and Jon (guitar) describe the songwriting process behind their coastal-themed music. Sam: Our new EP is called Drifting Sands, and it will feature a title track of the same name. Living by the sea has given our songs the imagery of breaking waves and windswept beaches - but we contrast this lyrical drama against upbeat rhythms. Jon: We like to use metaphors and tell short stories across our songs. They aren't always personal stories but we take inspiration from our surroundings. The song Drifting Sands has a laid back summer vibe, but has dark lyrics. We imagine a setting like Longsands Beach as the backdrop to a dramatic love story. Sam: The theme of longing for something or losing what you love appears in our music too. Our track Love Letter to the Sea tells a tale from the perspective of somebody longing to return to the coast that they know so well. It's a simple track that we feel people around us can relate to. Jon: Musically we work around a simple setup. I play the guitar and cajon in our live performances, and Sam accompanies lead vocals with a semi-acoustic ukulele. The combination of instruments has a nice blend, and makes for easy listening. It's a real pick-up-and-play arrangement. Sam: We like to play live in venues around the coast, where we live. The North East has a really nice music scene ideal for buskers, with places like the Surf Cafe (Tynemouth), the Left Luggage Room (Monkseaton) and of course The Exchange (North Shields). These are our favourite places to just show up and play, but also listen to the great variety of quality local music. Drifting Sands EP will be available on iTunes and Spotify on July 20th. EATING OUT
‘CATCH’ OF THE DAY FISH AND CHIPS ARE A REAL TREAT, ESPECIALLY AT THE AWARD WINNING PONTELAND SEAFOOD RESTAURANT ‘CATCH’, WRITES RICHARD WILSON
I
t is a common misconception, probably based on childhood memories, that fish and chips taste better when eaten at the seaside. Whilst there are some delightful chip shops and seafood restaurants sprinkled along our glorious Northumberland and North Tyneside coasts, venture inland and you will find a selection of some of the best the North East has to offer. Being a fish lover myself, and with my wife in tow, I decided to do exactly that, and the restaurant we chose to try was the award-winning Catch seafood restaurant on the outskirts of Ponteland. Building on the success of the Catch restaurants in West Vale and Holmfirth, Catch Seafood Ponteland is the third Catch restaurant and, as the name suggests, is a dedicated fish and seafood restaurant, located just off the A696 just outside of Ponteland. Entering through the main glass doors lit by a Catch sign, we were greeted by a host and shown to our table in the restaurant area. The bar and restaurant have a modern PERFECT: Sea bass and beef dripping chips
40
contemporary feel with an open glassfronted wine cellar, quirky lighting and a sleeper fronted chrome topped bar. The menu, as you would expect, is packed with an array of seafood selections, some classic, some very innovative. Although there is the odd non fish dish, if seafood is not to your liking then this menu is probably wasted on you, and vegetarians should certainly seek an alternative venue! For my starter I chose the King Scallops with roasted chorizo and garlic butter. If asked to describe the dish in one word it would be moreish! TASTY: King Prawn Battered Scampi
For my main course I ordered from the simply fish section of the menu. This section allows you to construct the dish yourself, by choosing your fish, 2 sides and a sauce to compliment the dish. My choices were - sea bass, beef dripping chips, spinach, accompanied by a thermidor sauce. Being a fish restaurant, you would expect that to be the star of the show, and it didn’t disappoint, crispy skin and perfectly cooked – the chips were a delight too! My wife chose the battered king prawn ‘scampi’, served with a fresh
salad, homemade tartare sauce and the same beef dripping chips. Very tasty were has comment on the king prawns (I can vouch for that as my folk did stray to her side of the table more than once) and she agreed with my summary of the chips. The restaurant area features an open kitchen, so we could watch the chefs at work, carefully preparing our dishes. We were told that the experienced team source the freshest and finest products from UK ports and pass them directly to the in-house award-winning chefs to create the dishes. Unfortunately, as I was driving on this occasion, I couldn’t sample anything other than a non-alcoholic beverage but, for those who desire, the drinks list includes a range of specially selected wines, spirits, beers, ales and seasonal cocktails to complement your meal. If you do want to make it an extended stay, or you are celebrating a special occasion, there are 5 large guest rooms available. The rooms, reminiscent of a Hamptons beach house, offer King-size beds and en-suite bathrooms, two rooms even feature a roll top bath! On the whole we found the restaurant décor and atmosphere very pleasant, and the food a delight. Although the menu is not cheap, we both agreed it was excellent value for money. So, what’s the catch? On our visit we couldn’t find one!

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

VODA look forward to seeing you at their Volunteering Recruitment Fair
MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS SUMMER BY VOLUNTEERING! Here, VODA explain the week long range of events and opportunites they have in store to let people know about the range of ways they can get involved
N
orth Tyneside is rich in volunteers – it is estimated that over 40,000 people give up their time, skills and resources to help others and causes they care about in the borough. Here at North Tyneside VODA, we see the positive differences volunteers make on a day-to-day basis. From helping out at one-off community events, volunteering administration skills weekly at a local charity, or directing organisations as a trustee or a member of a management committee, the range of ways people choose to volunteer is almost endless. Whether you have one day a week or an hour a month to spare, there is a role to suit you – there are even ways you can volunteer digitally. Home of North Tyneside’s Volunteer Centre, VODA supports people to find volunteering roles in the community which suit their interests, availability and skills. We also provide training, information and support to organisations which involve volunteers in their work, to ensure the experience is a positive one for everyone involved. We know that volunteers are quite often the lifeblood of local charities and community groups and that without them, some vital services and activities in our borough simply would not exist. And that’s why this June we’re once again celebrating Volunteers’ Week. Taking place between 1 and 7 June, Volunteers’ Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make across the UK.
48
It’s also a chance to share volunteering opportunities and let people know about the range of ways they can get involved in their local community. To mark the week, VODA has a week-long calendar of events, training opportunities and social media campaigns planned, culminating in a Volunteer Recruitment Fair, which takes place on Saturday 8 June between 10am and 3pm at the Beacon Centre in North Shields. This event is the chance for local people to drop in and meet a number of local organisations who involve volunteers in their work – you can also chat to VODA’s friendly team about our own projects and any other general queries you may have around volunteering. On the morning of Tuesday 4 June we are running a Volunteers and the Law training session aimed at organisations who involve volunteers, to ensure they have the correct knowledge, policies and procedures in place. We are also excited to be holding joint event with Helix Arts on the afternoon of the same day, aimed at anyone interested in volunteering in the arts and cultural sector. You can find out more about these events at www.voda.org.uk. This year, we are also shining the spotlight on an often-overlooked volunteering role – that of trustees and committee members. Trustees are the people who have overall responsibility for charities and community organisations – they make the major decisions affecting the charity and are responsible for setting the strategic

direction of its work. Volunteering as a trustee is a varied and rewarding role for people who want to share their skills and experience for the benefit of a cause or organisation they care about. It can also add to your personal and professional skills development and offer valuable networking opportunities. The commitment varies from role to role, but trustees generally meet between four and six times a year with opportunities to provide support different aspects of the organisation’s work in between. A number of North Tyneside organisations are actively looking for trustees and here at VODA we’d love to hear from any local people who are interested in volunteering this way. Leanne Wallwork is the Chairperson of Out of Sight, a registered charity which supports visually impaired children and those who have complex disabilities and their families in North Tyneside. She first became involved in the charity to access support for her daughter who was diagnosed with a visual impairment at six months old. She describes her role as a trustee: “I’ve done a few roles within the charity – I was secretary then became Chairperson which is a role I love. I feel like I’m part of a family and it’s rewarding to know that the decisions

we make at meetings really matter. It’s an important role being the Chairperson of Out of Sight and it’s also an enjoyable one because, although everything we do is all about the children, the technical side still needs to be done. I’d always encourage someone thinking about becoming a trustee to give it a go.” For more information on volunteering visit www.voda.org.uk, call 0191 643 2626 or email: admin@voda.org.uk

CARING FOR YOUR PETS TEETH
D
ental disease is a very common problem in pet animals – cats, dogs, rabbits and small mammals are all affected by it. As humans we know how painful it can be to have a tooth root abscess or even something smaller like a mouth ulcer. Animals very rarely show signs of pain with dental disease but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain. It often isn’t until they improve after the dental procedure that we can appreciate the pain they were in before. The most common signs of dental disease are: • bad breath (halitosis) • drooling more • pawing at the mouth (particularly in cats) • choosing to eat softer foods • chewing on one side of their mouth • dropping food when trying to eat • change in behaviour, not as keen to play with toys and may become withdrawn In more severe cases you may even see missing teeth or a swollen face. We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist, but our pets are still eating their food. This means as an owner it can often be difficult to detect dental disease. Dental disease is a progressive disease in animals in the same way it is for humans. It changes over time and therefore different and ongoing treatment is likely to be needed at different stages in a pet’s life. Some animals (like some humans) are very fortunate and they have great teeth and dental health – these animals may need very little intervention throughout their life. Other animals are less fortunate and these animals can need dental treatment every 4-12 months.
WHAT IS DENTAL DISEASE?
Dental disease covers a variety of conditions - the one we most commonly see in cats and dogs is periodontal disease. This is caused by a build-up of food and bacteria in the mouth which leads to calculus formation and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This in turn leads to destruction of the structures that support the teeth (ligaments and bone). Over time the gums become red, swollen and sore, teeth then become loose and may start to fall out.
There are 4 stages of dental disease with 0 being a healthy mouth and 4 being severe dental disease. Stages 1 and 2 are potentially reversible with a combination of veterinary treatment and dedicated home care (brushing teeth). Stages 3 and 4 are irreversible and often lead to loss of teeth. In stage 4 dental disease the amount of bacteria in the mouth is so high it can enter the bloodstream and travel through the body and impact on different organs e.g. bacteria settles in the heart valves and causes a disease called endocarditis.
“
We commonly see cats, dogs and rabbits in particular with severe end stage dental disease that would have a human crying for the dentist.
It is impossible to examine an animal’s mouth completely when they are awake – the only way to carry out an effective and accurate dental examination is under general anesthetic. You may hear your vet refer to a COHAT – this stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. During a COHAT the vet will examine every tooth with a dental probe and complete a dental chart – the same thing that happens when we go to the dentist. Things noted include how inflamed the gums are, how much calculus build up there is and whether there is any destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. Any missing, fractured or abnormal teeth will also be noted. Following this assessment it may be necessary to carry out dental radiographs (x-rays) to look at the roots of the teeth – this enables the vet to better assess any attachment loss around the teeth and evaluate the roots for any problems e.g. tooth root abscess (the same as in humans). An ultrasonic scaler will be used to carry out scaling of the tooth and under the gum line, the teeth will also be polished. Extractions will be carried out as necessary. To get the best out of any dental treatment you need to brush your animal’s teeth at home, at least 3 times weekly and ideally every day. Our nurses are happy to give advice on how to do this – it’s a great thing to start with young animals as often they accept it easier when younger. If you ever have any concerns about your pet’s dental health the best thing to do is to book an appointment to see your vet where they can assess your pet and discuss any treatment if it is necessary. To book a dental check up for your pet call Vets4Pets North Tyneside on 0191 2963311.

UPGRADE YOUR GARDEN
E
njoy your garden all year-round with a bespoke cabin or summerhouse from Plantsplus Garden Centre. From upgrading your potting shed or creating a space to socialise, we’ve asked our designer and expert, Cal Gowdy, to answer his most frequently asked questions before you jump in. Planning permission
Our buildings won’t need any planning permission as long you can tick off a few important things: You’re not building on the land of a listed building or within a conservation area; it’s not going in your front garden; it won’t take up more than 50% of your undeveloped garden. Heights can reach 4m, with anything over 2.5m requiring a 2m gap between the structure and the edge of your garden or fence.
Material
Our bespoke cabins and summerhouses at Plantsplus Garden Centre are made from kiln-dried Scandinavian or Baltic redwood which will reduce shrinkage. Bear in mind that there will be contraction and expansion with climatic conditions, so ensure you invest in a good paint or oil to keep it protected for longer. All our cabins have double-glazed windows, with the summerhouses being single glazed as standard. We don’t recommend using felt covering for your roof and instead pair our buildings with bitumen roof shingles or eco slates – 100% recycled and with the option of a few colours.
Heating
Your summerhouse or cabin comes with optional floor and roof insulation so you may want to think of having a power source for an electric heater in the cooler seasons. Whilst wall insulation and log burners are feasible, just be aware that they can double your
original cost and there are extra regulations to meet. Your height restrictions will also have to take into account any flue that reaches above the roof. A guttering kit is essential for looking after your external wooden walls, so put it to good use by collecting rainwater for your garden with an added water butt. In Summer the average household’s water use in the garden can spike to almost 70% of all water supplied, up from only 3% during the rest of the year. Not only will you be taking some strain off the environment, but you’ll be insuring yourself against hosepipe and sprinkler bans. Fancy learning more? Pop in to Plantsplus Garden Centre to view our show cabins and speak to a friendly member of our team. You’ll also find inspirational garden sheds, cabins, pods and much more on our NEW website www.plantsplus.co.uk also provides you with quality garden accessories that you won’t find in store.
