NORTH SHIELDS BUSINESS CHAMBER NEWS Extra Advice Available for Retailers
Thanks to the North East England Chamber of Commerce, small retailers in North Shields town centre and Tynemouth will have the benefit of additional help and advice from larger businesses in the region. In 2018, the NEECC and Lichfields published an excellent report entitled Town Centres: Planning for the Future. The Report advocates, amongst other things, that the range of shops, services and other services should be broadened; that heritage assets should be preserved; that the programme of events to increase footfall should be extended; that town centre residential developments should be considered; that collaboration amongst all stakeholders was important; and that additional help should be considered for retailers, in particular, those in their first few years of trading. In North Tyneside, we are lucky to have a local authority which actively supports business, in particular, by way of the Business Factory. But funding is tight. So the NEECC has arranged for some of its members (including Newcastle Building Society and John Lewis) to provide advice and information sessions to small retailers in North Shields. The sessions planned so far include visual merchandising, finance planning and tax, and legal and property. If you are not already on the list and would like to participate in any of the sessions, please contact Miles Walton on miles.walton@yahoo.co.uk. 6 6
Tourist Information for Cruise Ship Visitors
As the number of cruise ships arriving at North Shields increases year after year (nearly 60 this year), so the information available to crew and passengers has become more accessible and detailed. Many passengers on transit stops choose to take tours, organised by the cruise operators, to attractions such as Hadrian’s Wall, Alnwick Castle and Durham. But many are keen to explore the local area. As they pass the Information Tent on disembarking, they can ask for advice from the staff of JCB Tourism Solutions and pick up guides and maps. Some passengers focus mainly on the Royal Quays area, in particular the Outlet Centre. Others take the Port of Tyne shuttle bus to Tynemouth Metro Station and spend time in Tynemouth Village. Others start there and go to other places of interest in the local area. Some cruises start and end at North Shields. Whereas most attention is given to crew and passengers who arrive for the day on transit stops, many passengers arriving here to start a cruise have a little time to explore before boarding. Some will already know the area but many come from other parts of the north and Scotland and in the absence of tourism offices in the town, we need to explore other methods encouraging them to spend time in our town. There are several guides and maps available now. One is the map and guide produced by the North
With over 100 members, the Business Chamber can and does make a real difference to businesses based in the town. For more information visit www.northshieldschamber.co.uk
Shields Business Chamber entitled: Local Heritage, Shopping and Facilities; this covers the whole area from Royal Quays to Tynemouth. Another is the Welcome to Tynemouth map and guide, giving more detail of the businesses in Tynemouth. Both are also available at Tynemouth Metro on days when the larger ships arrive.
Bedford Street Events to Continue Indoors
To avoid the Autumn chill, Bedford Street Events, which has been taking place in North Shields town centre throughout the Summer months will be moving indoors to inside the Beacon Centre. The continuation of the market and move to indoors has arisen due to the positive feedback received from local residents and customers to the Centre. The indoor market will feature a selection of stall holders who will be selling a range of local produce such as cheeses and jams, as well as other popular goods including bath bombs. The market has a number of regular stall holders, however if you’re a local trader and are interested in being part of the indoor market, contact Kate Morrison on 0191 226 8844 or you can e-mail kate@ forumcentrespace.co.uk for further information.
Halloween Fun
Younger visitors to the Centre in the October half term can join in a host of spooktacular Halloween fun, as the Centre’s Halloween characters invite children to join in series of gruesome fun! For further information call 0191 2583909 or visit the Centre’s facebook page www.facebook.com/beaconcentrenorthshields.

New Hybrid Business Centre Launches in North Shields
T
he flexible workspace sector is booming in the UK, but due to the lack of local choice a new hybrid centre has recently launched in North Shields.
Royal Quays Business Centre is situated just minutes from the A19 and the Tyne Tunnel linked to Newcastle by the A1058 and A19. The Business Centre has been designed to support a wide range of members to work in a collaborative environment. Over £500,000 has been invested into the creation of serviced office space with plans for further growth in line with local demand. The building is ideal for start-ups seeking co-working space or, at the other end of the spectrum, corporate businesses needing a professional base. With a wealth of amenities including state of the art IT infrastructure, free onsite parking, an onsite fitness centre, cycle storage and meeting rooms. A training seminar/event room for up to 80 delegates with catering is ideal for coffee mornings and training. In addition, there are 3 meeting rooms with state of the art smart TV screens to cater for meetings for up to 24 delegates. Further facilities include; 24 hour building access, a manned reception, lounge areas, onsite showers. The building offers its members 2GB dedicated capability to include a back up disaster recovery platform

across two major providers and has invested heavily in SMART IT systems to support businesses to meet their growth expectations. The contemporary interiors and abundance of free local parking spaces makes Royal Quays Business Centre a commercial space that grows with your business. With specially designed areas to support co-working for freelancers, entrepreneurs or home-workers looking to utilise the benefits of a shared commercial space, the building has been designed with the growing enterprise community in North Shields in mind. Royal Quays also offer private offices, virtual offices (mail address) and managed office solution for up to 200 people. With the ability to structure any bespoke agreement as a result of our freehold business model. Backed by asset rich £multi million property fund with a substantial investment and development portfolio with an exceptional track record of over 50 years. In line with its ethos to support local business and the start up community the new business centre has also partnered with the Business Factory in North Tyneside and offers dedicated business support to all its members. A professional advisor will work with you at any stage of your new business in addition to holding weekly workshops in a variety of areas. Since opening its new workspace in May the centre has already attracted over 20 companies and is experiencing strong enquiry levels. North Tyneside is very much the place to do business and Royal Quays Business Centre has created a commercial environment to suit a broad selection of modern enterprises looking for an agile, flexible working environment in a key location. “We aim to disrupt the market by providing real choice all inclusive pricing and service delivery tailored for our workspace community” according to the owners of the building. The Café with a Conscience
All proceeds from the YMCA Café go to support young people through charitable work
O
ut and about in North Shields town centre, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to grab a coffee and a bite to eat.
Each street peppered with a combination of old and new venues, offering something to sate every appetite. So how do you decide where to go when the time comes to rest your legs? Well, YMCA North Tyneside Café is a little different to the rest. This bright, affordable and welcoming café aims to serve its community, not only by providing people with fresh homemade food, barista-style coffee and warm hospitality, but also by what happens behind the scenes. Located just seconds off the main high street, on Church Way, this charity run café has recently celebrated its second birthday and has already established itself as a popular meeting place, with each and every customer helping YMCA work towards tackling youth homelessness in the area. On the surface, the floor to ceiling glass entrance, bright interior and spacious seating area provides a welcoming setting for members across the community to meet friends, work on that important project and feed the family. Less obvious is the work carried out each and every day by the dedicated YMCA staffing team in supporting young members of the community, through supported

accommodation, after school activities and help gaining access to education. The café offers a wide variety of food and drinks, from a delicious pot of Ringtons tea or a freshly made fruit smoothie, to a full 3-course meal with tea or coffee for just £8. Hosted by a strong team of volunteers, adult learners and YMCA staff, this café prides itself on serving up homely, delicious food, made fresh every day. With a regularly refreshed menu and staff who go the extra mile to ensure your requirements are met, there is sure to be something to satisfy your sweet or savoury cravings. Working collaboratively with the North Tyneside Council, YMCA café also operates as a training environment for adult learners undertaking courses in hospitality and customer service as well as modern apprenticeships. These courses develop their vocational skills and provide them with the valuable experience needed to help further their career opportunities. The learners and the many volunteers who dedicate their time to help run the café and kitchen, as well as the customers, all help contribute towards YMCA’s charitable outcomes. Housed in the long-standing Sir James Knott Building on Church Way, each purchase made in the café, gym and event and conferencing facilities, contributes to making a positive impact on the young people living in YMCA’s supported accommodation as well as young people throughout the local area. So the next time you’re in North Shields and need to refuel, be sure to give this unique, light dining café a try, open Monday to Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm and Saturdays 9:30am-3pm, and take extra comfort knowing that your money is going towards helping tackle the growing issue that is youth homelessness in North Tyneside. Be sure to find them on Instagram at ymca_cafe, Facebook and Trip Advisor to show your support. YMCA Cafe, Church Way, North Shields, NE29 0AB

Book Your Perfect Holiday with an Expert Travel Planner
Hello, My name is Kath Dodds and I am your local Travel Counsellor.
W
hat is a Travel Counsellor you may ask? Well I am your very own personal Travel Expert, with a wealth of knowledge about the wonderful exciting places to visit in the world. I have worked abroad with tourists so I have first- hand knowledge of what could go wrong with your holiday, but also the little extras that can make it that little bit more enjoyable and special. It was my responsibility to ensure my clients had a perfect holiday. I always treat people the way I would like to be treat myself which really helps when you are organising tours and excursions. I made sure that my clients had no complaints and if they did then they were dealt with promptly. However, when I returned to the UK I found the high street could not give me the same satisfaction with customer care, as I was not always there when my clients needed me and a colleague would answer their query. That is what happens when you book through travel agents or if you use the telephone, it is a different person dealing with you every time. If you book your holiday on the internet then there is no one to speak to at all and you hope your holiday is going to be ok. That is what makes me different because it is my business to find you the holiday that is tailored to your needs, not the brochure or internet .No matter where you want to go in the world be it the UK or abroad, no matter for how long or what type of accommodation, I can organise it for you. Travel Counsellors is a global network of friendly
14
professional travel gurus with one simple purpose, to make a positive difference to people’s lives. They have strong relationships with thousands of hotels and suppliers throughout the world which means I have access to the very best rates and travel plans that suit you exactly no matter where you want to go. Travel Counsellors have been awarded the best Home Working Travel Agency this year as well as awards for Technology and Customer Service. Travel Counsellors are independent so are not tied to any specific airlines or hotels. Your money is completely safe in their hands as they have their own unique financial protection as well as being ABTA & ATOL bonded. With their Duty office open 24/7 there is help at hand no matter where you are in the world ,so all you have to worry about is your packing! So what can I do for you? I can organise domestic or international flights, accommodation, worldwide rail travel, river & ocean cruises, ferries, city breaks, country retreats, multi centre holidays, escorted tours, ski, golf & sports holidays, transfer, taxis, attractions, tours, airport parking & lounges, school holidays business travel, Honeymoons, Weddings Special Occasions. Whitley Bay Jewellery & Antiques Celebrates 10 Years in Business THE HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM ARE GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH WITH THEIR BUSINESS ON PARK VIEW
H
aving worked in the Jewellery business for over 30 years, Philip Stephenson and his wife Linda decided to follow their dream back in 2009 and open their own business, and ten years later the business is flourishing. Philip, along with his wife Linda, run Whitley Bay Jewellery and Antiques Ltd on Park View in the town, and he is a Registered Valuer with the National Association of Goldsmiths and a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers. Philip has an outstanding background in the industry, working as a manager for Goldsmiths Jewellers and successfully running Northern Goldsmiths stores in Newcastle and Sunderland. He was also involved with Reid and Sons on Blackett Street and Grainger Street . Philip told us “For many years while I was at Reids I handled many fabulous and historic items, some of which belonged to famous and wealthy clients. My training and knowledge of antique and period jewellery and silverware was built up there.’ Now, ten years on, Philip says they are both still enjoy helping their clients to make happy memories and has never looked back since opening the store. Many people have inherited a piece of jewellery from a friend or relative and have no idea what its value might be. When someone dies and leaves you jewellery, there may be sentimental value attached to it. You might be entrusted to safeguard family heirlooms for future generations or expected to divide them up for the estate of the deceased. Perhaps
20
you want to hold onto some as keepsakes. Regardless of what you plan to do with the inherited jewellery you have one of your first priorities should be to determine its value, in part so you can insure it for the proper amount, if necessary. Using all his wealth of experience, Philip is more than happy to guide you through the contents of your jewellery box. Philip spends a lot of his time giving advice and discussing valuations with his clients, many of whom came by personal recommendation from people he and Linda have looked after in the ten years since their business opened. You can take jewellery into the shop on Park View and Philip will be happy to help, whether you are looking for a valuation for insurance, probate, to sell, or simply for your own interest and peace of mind. A written appraisal can be provided for a small fee. The valuation is carried out on the premises and comes with photographic identification. If you require only a verbal opinion Philip is also be happy to help you to the best of his ability. We hope to see the store still going strong for many years to come. Healthy Lids for Life at Concept Eye Clinic CONCEPT EYE CLINIC ARE PLEASED TO OFFER A REVOLUTIONARY TREATMENT FOR BLEPHARITIS.
W
e take our eyes for granted but did you know that keeping on top of eye hygiene can also protect your vision?
Debris can build up on our eyelids over a period of weeks. It can harden and form a similar layer to plaque on teeth. This debris can block the essential oil glands and allow bacteria to thrive.
What will a BlephEx treatment do?
This is a simple, painless procedure using a soft medical grade sponge across the eyelids, to effectively remove debris that has caused blockages of the glands. Similar to a dental hygienist removing plaque, BlephEx cleans the eyes so that the surface is well lubricated for comfortable, fresh vision. After the procedure, you will be advised on how to maintain your lid hygiene between treatments. If you suffer from any of the following symptoms, please come and see us: • Itching or scratchy eyes • Foreign body sensation • Tearing • Crusting • Dry Eyes • Redness/inflammation • The build-up of bio-matter around the eyelashes 24
At Concept Eye Clinic in Tynemouth, we are delighted to offer our patients this wonderful new eye hygiene service by BlephEx as part of a stand alone treatment or eye care plan. Sam will be delighted to discuss your needs and book your treatment. You can call on tel: 0191 296 6124 or email us info@concepteyeclinic.com

Local Retailer Receives National Recognition at Independent Awards
Northumbria Flooring & Furniture scooped the first prize
The inaugural English Independent Retail Awards 2019, in partnership with United Grocers Ltd, was held in July at the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park. The black-tie event recognised top retailers that have shown incredible commitment to product and customer service, with fantastic teams, staff and managers contributing to their success and popularity. The various categories, which were open to businesses all over the North East, were all highly competitive, with the winners being chosen based on their professionalism and high standards of service. The event was hosted by BBC Newcastle broadcaster, Lisa Shaw. She welcomed on stage the winners of each sector, each showing outstanding commitment to serving the local communities who have crowed them winners. The competition in each sector was fierce, but Northumbria Flooring & Furniture of Blyth won the Flooring category, taking home first prize amidst stiff competition. Owners James Cunningham and Michael Connor 26
Said: "we couldn't be prouder to win Independent retailer award in the flooring sector. We would like to thank the people of North Tyneside for shopping local and supporting us for this past 4 years. We try to deliver the best experience throughout a customer's journey with us, from initially entering the store to closing the door of their home after fitting, it is customer satisfaction that we strive for and winning this award is truly humbling". Irfan Younis, CEO of Creative Oceanic, said: "The English Independent Retail Awards 2019-North East is a celebration of the independent retailers that enhance our communities and contribute to the local economy by employing hundreds of people. The winners have demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the market they operate within. The commitment to improve and enhance their services and products has made them stand amongst the rest." OUT & ABOUT
Pint Sized Pubs
Over the last few years we have seen a new type of pub spring up in local towns around the region - the micro pub. These welcome additions to local high streets offer drinkers a much-welcomed alternative to big chain venues or standard run of the mill pubs. Most micro pubs are independently run and support small local breweries - fantastic for the region as a whole. Here are a selection...
Monkseaton: Front Street Tap House Earlier this year Monkseaton welcomed the very cool Front Street Tap House, specialising in real ales and rum. The micropub, based at 17b Front Street, is owner James Benson’s first venture, having decided to take control of his own destiny after he was made redundant from customer service roles. Mr Benson took over an empty unit on the front street and has turned it in to a fantastic addition to the coastal micro pub circuit. 17b Front Street, Monkseaton, NE25 8AQ Facebook: @fstaphouse
Whitley Bay: The Split Chimp
The Split Chimp opened early February 2019 and occupies one of the external units of the recently refurbished Spanish City, overlooking the promenade along the North Sea coast. The single room has a long bar counter facing the entrance with seating around
the periphery. The house beer from Errant Brewery is supplemented with an ever changing range of four beers sourced from near and far. Unit 1, Spanish City Dome, Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay, NE26 1BG Facebook: @splitchimp
Whitley Bay: Storm Cellar
Storm Cellar is the ideal spot to discover new beers – with the added bonus of being able to take them home to enjoy as well. Featuring 10 lines, which include Black Storm Brewery house cask ales, they also stock a great range of beers, ciders, wines and spirits from across the UK – offering you a selection of beers exclusive to Storm Cellar in the North East. Enjoy comfy sofas alongside rustic, engaging charm, where everyone’s welcome. 10 York Road, Whitley Bay, Ne26 1Ab Facebook: @Whitleybaystormcellar
THE BOX WOOD TAP
North Shields: Enigma Tap
Whitley Bay: The Dog & Rabbit
When the long standing ladies clothes shop Gabrielle, which used to occupy the premises, closed its doors, husband and wife team Tony and Julie Patton seized the opportunity to give Park View in Whitley Bay one of the things it was lacking and, after a major renovation, opened the doors to the Dog & Rabbit pub and micro-brewery. Tony had been home-brewing for a number of years, and is a long time champion of real ale and supporting local brewery’s. He wanted to make the pub exactly that – a pub. No gimmicks, no loud music, no television, no flashing lights, just good old fashioned proper beer and proper craic! The décor is ‘old school’ dark wood and deep rich red. The seating was made to order from a local charity, and the mahogany counter was rescued from a Cumbrian hotel, all adding to the authentic feel of the pub. 36 Park View, Whitley Bay NE26 2TH Facebook: The Dog & Rabbit Micro Brew Pub
The Enigma Tap, a name inspired by Thomas Brown, of North Shields, who in 1942 retrieved documents from a sinking German U-Boat which were critical to cracking the Enigma Code, is North Shields first micro pub. The pub, based on Bedford Street in the town centre, focus on sourcing local products and being environmentally friendly. They are using reclaimed wood for furniture and are committed to having a plastic-free operation. They support local breweries and have a wide selection of cask and keg offerings. Some of the most recent additions to the list include Northern IPA from Hadrian Border Brewery, Azacca Pale from the Almastybrewingco and the malty classic Red Gown from Firstandlastbrewery. There is a selection of nibbles and food offerings, as well as various street food nights and their popular quiz nights. Keep updated with new beverages and what’s on on their Facebook page. 60 Bedford Street, North Shields NE29 0AL Facebook: @EnigmaTap ENIGMA TAP
Tynemouth: Platform 2
As the name implies, this is sited on Platform 2 of Tynemouth Metro Station, in a former coffee house which originally was the station waiting room. The single rectangular room has a mix of perimeter and freestanding seating, and there is a free vintage style jukebox. Board games are available, and there is an outside drinking area on the station concourse. Four handpumps offer beers from local breweries. Tynemouth Station, Tynemouth, NE30 4RE Facebook: @platform2tm PLATFORM 2
Monkseaton: Left Luggage Room
Specialist craft beer pub in the heart of Monkseaton in the former Parcel and Left Luggage Room of Monkseaton Train Station, serving a selection of beers, wines, specialist spirits. Access is directly from the southbound platform side. A single open plan room has the bar at one end and freestanding seating. In their words: “No alcopops, no cheap lagers, no televisions, just great drinks and great conversation, in a great building...” Monkseaton Metro Station, Norham Road, Monkseaton, NE26 3NR Facebook: @leftluggageroom

Using Exercise To Help Manage Diabetes By Sarah Howe
P
hysical activity, or exercise, is a great tool to help manage your diabetes. It is a very important part of your diabetes treatment plan and can help you feel your healthiest.
Physical activity is valuable because it can lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, raise HDL ("good cholesterol"), promote weight loss, improve blood circulation, help the body better use insulin, reduce stress, increase flexibility and make you feel better... that’s a lot of compelling reasons to get active! Before you start exercising you should have your doctors permission. You don’t need any equipment apart from some comfortable clothing and properly fitting trainers. Start your activity slowly and increase gradually. Your goal should be to exercise at least 30 minutes, five days per week, or as recommended by your health care professional . A 30-minute session may be broken up into three 10-minute sessions. Start by setting some realistic goals with the help of your health care professional. It could be to lose a specific amount of weight or to exercise for a set amount of time each week. Then make a plan and identify ways to increase your physical activity. Try to go out of your
way to be more active and decrease inactivity. For example, walking to the local shop instead of driving or joining your local Curves facility.
Safety tips for exercising •
Managing your weight
If you are overweight, losing as little as 5-10kg can help lower your blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. You will lessen the strain on your bones and joints and will feel better all around. Begin by keeping track of what, when, where, and how you eat now. Make a plan and identify which habits you will change now and which ones you will change later. Set realistic goals. Up to ½ kilogram weight loss per week is a reasonable goal. It goes without saying that combining exercise with healthy eating will make managing your diabetes easier. Try to eat a variety of foods from all the food groups and avoid fad diets that eliminate whole food groups. Try to eat smaller portions, which will help you consume less calories and fat and avoid skipping meals which will affect your blood sugar. At Curves we can help you to achieve your health goals and make exercise a permanent way of life. If

To decrease the risk of low blood sugar, check your blood sugar before you begin your session. If it's over 12mmol/l or if urine shows ketones, delay the activity until your blood sugar levels are under 12mmol/l. If your blood sugar is below 6mmol/l, you might need a snack before beginning the activity. The best time for a session is 30 minutes to one hour after eating a meal. Check your feet for blisters/sores before and after any physical activity. If you take medicine that lowers blood sugar levels, carry a carbohydrate source such as glucose tablets or glucose containing drinks. Include a 5 to 10 minute warmup and cool down. Drink water before, during, and after physical activity. Try to exercise with someone. Check your blood sugar after an activity. For some people, exercise can lower blood sugar for up to 24 hours. Carry diabetes identification.

A New Treatment for Verrucae
Most of us will get a verruca at least once in our life, they can be painful and hard to get rid of, so identifying them and treating them promptly is key At Bay Podiatry we see many patients, young and old, who suffer with painful and unsightly verrucae, but what are they and what is the best way to treat them? They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and generally appear as small cauliflower like growths on the soles of the feet. HPV is contagious through person-to person contact. The virus is thought to prefer damp environments, hence the frequent association with swimming pool changing rooms. Anyone can develop a verruca, but like many viruses, it is possible to develop immunity. If a verruca is not painful or problematic, treatment may not be required as the body may develop immunity over time. However, studies have shown that the longer the verruca has been present the less chance of it resolving without treatment. If you have a verruca, there are various treatment options available with a variety of success rates. Many of the longer established treatments aim to remove the verruca 46
by burning or freezing them. These methods have a relatively poor success rate with one study showing it as low as 14%. In most cases they require multiple applications and carry the risk of pain and burns to the surrounding healthy skin. Alternate approaches to treatment aim to encourage the body to become immune to the particular strain of HPV present in the skin. There are 2 types of treatments that can do this: The first is needling. The area of the foot containing the verruca is numbed using local anaesthetic, then the entire surface of the verruca is pricked with a needle. This
Treating a single verruca with Swift Microwave Therapy at Bay Podiatry
effectively pushes the virus into the body so it can be detected. Following treatment the verruca requires a dressing and there can be some discomfort in the initial stages. Studies have shown this to be effective at resolving verrucae in over 60-70% of cases. The newest method involves Microwave therapy. Microwave energy is delivered to the verruca through a special probe that sits against the skin. This energy can be precisely controlled to heat the water molecules in the verruca. There is no need for dressings or local anaesthetic with this treatment. A study has shown that after 4 treatments, 4 weeks apart, 76% of verruca treated had resolved. Swift Microwave Therapy for the treatment of verrucae is available at Bay Podiatry. For more information contact 01912524441 or visit www.baypodiatry.co.uk to book online. Tips For a Clutter Free Kitchen
Professional decluttering and organising expert Cath Hindle shares her 8 top tips to get your kitchen clutter under control.
Cath Hindle
T
here is a famous William Morris quote that I return to everyday when I’m helping people to declutter: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
Apply this saying to any space that you want to organise and you won’t go far wrong but it is especially pertinent in the kitchen. Kitchens are receptacles for no end of clutter. Gadgets, electricals, old crockery, drawers of screwdrivers, old letters and bank statements, lightbulbs, blue tac and string; all of which are hidden behind cupboard doors. Cupboards are great storage but can also become easily cluttered and full if not sorted regularly which means you don’t make full use of or get the most benefit from the things you need or love. Here’s some top tips for keeping your kitchen fully functioning and clutter free: When decluttering any room, it’s useful to think about the stuff that you use most often. So, in terms of the kitchen think utensils, pans, crockery, glasses and store the things that you use most next to the area that you use them. Mugs above the kettle, pans near the hob etc. Whilst on the subject of mugs – if you don’t want to drink

your tea out of it, get rid!! Overstuffed mug cupboards bring no joy. Lose a few chipped and ugly ones and see how you feel. By thinking about the stuff you do use (see point 1), you will automatically wheedle out the stuff you don’t. Then, separate the things you use occasionally or want to keep from the stuff you don’t. Bin, scrap or pass on the unwanted items immediately. Pass it on groups on Facebook are great for this as are some charity shops. British Heart Foundation take electrical appliances (I once had a client who got rid of 6 George Forman grills!!) Now think about how you use your kitchen. Do you entertain? How many people can you fit round the table? No point keeping a casserole dish for 12 if you never invite folks round and don’t like stew for example. As a general rule, I suggest keeping double the amount your household needs. There is four of us at Clear the Clutter HQ so we have 8 of most things (except bowls - I love bowls – see good old William Morris quote above). A good tip is use to use small baskets or take away boxes to store things like clip its, bottle openers etc. They still fit in

your drawers but allow you to group things. This also works under the kitchen sink where dishwasher tablets and tea towels can disappear forever. Use large baskets that you can pull out so you can see your washing up liquid from your oven cleaner. Speaking of Tupperware, if space allows, stack the bottoms in one drawer and the lids in the drawer above or stack the lids in an empty tub. This makes them much easier to pair up. Finally, don’t forget your food. Regularly check for out of date stuff. Don’t put new shopping in front of old stuff. That’s how you end up with lots of corned beef in the back of the cupboard. Store like with like and if possible, stack tins. If you cook with herbs and spices, use a shoe box to store the jars in and write the name on the top of each one so you can easily locate what you need.

REDUCE PEAT USE
Whilst peat has long been touted as a nutritious and organic feed for your garden, pressure has been put on the industry to back away from what is seen to be a destructive activity to our natural landscape and wildlife. Along with starting your own compost heap, green manure is a fantastic way to put organic nutrients into the ground – great for raised beds and vegetable patches. Lupins and Phacelia can both be grown from seed, with the added benefit of a striking floral display and fantastic source of food for pollinators such bees and butterflies. They’ll also attract hoverflies that will kill garden pests such as aphids.

Westland’s New Horizon is 100% peat free, natural and sustainable
There are many benefits to buying from your local plant nursery
Our biggest supplier of growing media has released a statement outlining the hard work they are doing to better the industry. Keith Nicholson of Westland Horticulture said, “Now over 70% of total material used in Westland products is non-peat which will be furthered in 2020, headlined by our move to reduce peat content in the UK’s lead[ing] compost, Multi-Purpose with John Innes - Single biggest step in driving the industries peat reduction. We have also already achieved “zero to landfill” in all our facilities and have removed over 800 tonnes of plastic from our product packaging, including growing media.” Look out for Westland’s New Horizon brand – it’s 100% peat free, natural, sustainable and suitable for all indoor and outdoor plants, as well as vegetables.
BUY BRITISH
Buy British for pest control, and even better, local for carbon footprint reduction. When you buy from a local plant nursery you can feel confident knowing that no foreign bugs as diseases will be compromising the health of your plants or the natural wildlife; there is massive reduction in greenhouse gases from transport; having been grown under the same daylight hours as your own
garden with no extreme temperature changes, your plants should be hardier, requiring fewer pesticides, water and fertilizer… with an added bonus that you can ask to speak to the growers of homegrown plants for free in-store to really understand how best to maintain your garden purchases. Whilst garden centres continue to make strides in their sustainable practices, it is the demands of consumer that makes the biggest industry waves and together, all our small improvements should make a huge impact on the environment. At Plantsplus, we have a Shades of Green environmental policy which illustrates our continued effort to respond to environmental and community issues that affect all of our customers, staff and suppliers. Current sustainability projects include: LED Lighting, Photovoltaic panels, Rainwater collection, Electric car charging points, Working towards a digital office, Reduction of plastic pots in our nursery, and Landscaping for wildlife. Get Your Glow On!
Unlike gyms focussing on working out, or weight clubs which focus only on calories, Glow classes believe the best way for better health is a combined approach of exercise and diet. Margery Wilson visited her local Glow class ran by Liz Ford to find out more... It was with some trepidation that I pulled into the car park at Beaconhill Community Centre in Cramlington on a dark, wet September evening. It was years since I had done anything more strenuous than walking, but the information video on the 'Glow' website assured me that I could work at my own pace and ability. As soon as I entered the spacious hall I felt comfortable – the buzz of conversation and the greeting of the coach, Liz, were very welcoming. Liz told me about the session and how she had a background knowledge of dietary needs and healthy eating plans. She introduced me to the members who had arrived and gave me a basic health questionnaire to fill in (this was purely for my own well-being). Having returned the form, the ladies around me included me in their conversation and told me about the myriad of social activities Liz arranged for them as well as taking the classes. After about half an hour, Liz gave a little talk – this week about Osteoporosis – then the work began! There were about 40 ladies there, and we started with a warm-up session which consisted of a series of gentle movements performed with background music. We then had a 'water break' and the workout part of the session began. For each exercise (which was repeated for 30 seconds) Liz showed an 'easy' version and a more energetic one, and it was left to the individual to decide which one to follow. I opted for the easy version and found I could keep up, though my arm/leg co-ordination left a lot to be
desired! As the session progressed, however, I found that I was getting into the rhythm and although one exercise flowed into another I felt I was improving. Throughout the workout there were 'water breaks' so I never felt dehydrated. The cool-down at the end was very relaxing and rounded off the session perfectly. Liz showed me a timetable of the weekly sessions and each one consisted of different sets of movements so there was always variety. This variety applied to all her classes on different days, different times and in different venues. I have to admit that I was more than favourably impressed with my first visit. I have been to weight-loss groups and exercise groups before but to have them both included in one session was great. I have never been to a class where I felt so much at home and where there was no sense of others watching and criticising. The atmosphere from start to finish was genuinely friendly and sociable, the surroundings welcoming and the exercises were extremely 'do-able'. I would have no hesitation in recommending these classes (whatever your age, shape, size or fitness level) and am looking forward to next time. I feel as if I have made some new friends and I was certainly 'GLOWING' when I finished. Liz Ford runs Glow classes in Whitley Bay, Seaton Sluice, Blyth, Cramlington and Seaton Burn. Give Someone Power of Attorney… Before it's Too Late
Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.
All work we undertake is at fixed fees:

Rising Sun Volunteers Create a New Wildlife Pond
Regular visitor Lily Rose, who the pond is named after
V
olunteers have waded in to transform an old swamp into a colourful pond and wildlife haven in North Tyneside.
The Friends of Rising Sun County Park took it upon themselves to resurrect the neglected pond and overgrown garden, which is close to the visitor centre at the heart of the 400-acre beauty spot. With funding from the Banks Group and support from North Tyneside Council, as well as several local firms, they dug out the 20ft x 30ft pond, replaced the lining, built a new fence, improved the access and planted thousands of bulbs. They then set a challenge for the community to come up with a name for the pond and when the family of seven-year-old Lily Rose put forward some suggestions, they found the perfect name was right under their noses. Lily, who visits the Rising Sun Country Park regularly with her family and loves spotting newts at the pond, was overjoyed to have the pond named after her. Her mum, Gemma Steel, a primary school teacher from Whitley Bay, said: “We entered the competition and sent in some suggestions for naming the main pond. They weren’t chosen but Lily’s name was chosen and now it feels as though we won. It’s the perfect name for a natural space. The Rising Sun is brilliant for families and we always have a good day out when we come here.” The area is now flourishing with bees, butterflies and amphibians and has become a popular destination for school groups.
Keith Page, Secretary of the Friends group, said: “The restored Lily Rose pond was named by a young lady from Whitley Bay and it was chosen because it was such an appropriate and lovely name. She is absolutely chuffed to bits and the fact that she is from the borough and a regular visitor makes it even more special. The pond had to be completely dug out and everything thrown away. The lining had perished and over time it had become a quagmire. It ceased to be a pond. “We’ve had great support from some of the local companies who have come along and helped us with some of the heavy-digging and planting. It’s teambuilding at its best and it’s fantastic to see people taking pride. We’re very pleased with the results. The pond was officially opened by North Tyneside Councillor Carl Johnson, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport. He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, another great community project. We are very fortunate in North Tyneside to have so many groups that really step forward for the local area and transform these spaces for everyone to use and enjoy. People often say the coast is the jewel in the crown of North Tyneside but I always say there are two and the Rising Sun is the other one. If you’ve not been here before, it’s a fabulous space and I recommend people to come and explore it.” For further information about the Friends of the Rising Sun or to lend a helping hand with litter picking, stalls and other activities to raise funds to support wildlife and nature in the park, search ‘Friends of Rising Sun Country Park’ on Facebook.
