Nick Knowles with the Northumbria Flooring Team
Local Flooring Company Answers The ‘DIY SOS’ Call Again Northumbria Flooring & Furniture, with branches in Blyth and North Shields Royal Quays Outlet Centre, once again took part in the hit BBC TV show DIY SOS, this time on a project in Longframlington. Northumbria Flooring previously donated and fitted all the carpets for an episode of the programme, which aired in 2019, featuring a property in North Shields. The BBC contacted the team once again for their latest project in the area, and they were only too happy to answer the call and help out. This project was to help the Owen family, who have four generations living together, including daughter Bobbie, who has severe disabilities, autism and epilepsy, and her mum and nan, who both live with medical conditions too. Once again, working their magic, the DIY SOS team renovated the home within ten days, making a safe environment for the whole family to live in comfortably. Speaking to the owners of Northumbria Flooring, James & Micheal, they shared their experience of being able to help and support this worthy cause. 12

“It’s been our pleasure and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The process began with meeting the design team from the BBC on a trades day. We spoke with Gaby and the team to identify styles and colours they would like. After measuring up, we went back to them with a donation of a whole house of quality wool carpets, antique brass door bars and underlay. We also fitted an engineered oak flooring throughout the ground floor. “We took 9 of our team to ensure the Job was completed in a swift time over two evenings and a Sunday. It is a great feeling to be able to give back to the local community and full credit to our team, who gladly gave up their spare time to help with the project. It was overwhelming to see how many tradespeople turned out, and we were proud to be one of them.” “The whole DIY SOS team, Nick, Chris, Gaby & Jules are so nice to work with, and Billy is just hilarious, constantly making everyone laugh.” The show aired on Tuesday 31st May and is available on BBC IPlayer and catch up. ■ www.northumbriaflooring.co.uk

Families Invited to Stride Out Along the Coast
This August, the free 10K family walk along the beautiful North Tyneside coastline is back for 2022. Taking place on Saturday 27 August, the scenic family walk starts from The Parks Sports Centre, North Shields, finishing at St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitley Bay. The event begins at 10.30am, and participants will work their way along the Fish Quay, the River Tyne, past Tynemouth Priory and Castle, along a stretch of coastline and the Spanish City Dome to the finish line. The six-mile route will be fully marshalled along the way, making it a perfect event for the whole family to get involved in. The walk can be done at any pace that suits you; whether you are looking for a leisurely stroll or wish to complete the walk at a brisk pace, the choice is yours. This year the event is plastic/waste-free, and participants are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle with them to fill up at the water fountains along the route. CBBC and Panto Stars to Host Smile for a Night Family Variety Show The North East’s favourite variety show – hosted by CBBC and panto stars Danny Adams and Clive Webb – is back after a two years delay due to the pandemic. Smile For A Night will take to the stage at new venue for the event – the Playhouse, Whitley Bay, on Sunday September 25th – in aid of children’s charity Smile For Life. All money raised will go towards improving the lives of young people with disabilities and learning difficulties across the North East. On the day Danny and Clive – stars of the hit show Danny & Mick and Newcastle Theatre Royal panto – will take the audience on a tour of local acts including singers, dancers and comedians, as well as performing their own slide-splitting comedy capers. Acts will include comedian Lost Voice Guy, winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2018, and magician Graeme Shaw, who was awarded the British Champion of family entertainment in 2020. And the final performance spot has been opened up to the public, with the charity offering a slot to a new star to showcase their skills. Individuals or groups with a unique talent need to send a video or video link of their act to frankie@ rusbymedia.com by Friday July 1st, with a shortlist of entries then invited to perform in front of a panel of judges before a winner is chosen. Danny, who will be also bringing his Cirque Du Hilarious tour to the North East in summer, said: “It will be fantastic to be back. It’s been years since we have been able to put the variety show on and I’m sure it will be even better than ever. “It will be great to be in this lovely venue, on the beautiful North East coast, bringing together the best of what the region has to offer in aid of this lifechanging charity. 16

“Audiences are so ready for live performances after the last couple of years, and so are we. We appreciate and enjoy being on stage now more than ever.” Danny, who is currently busy with a tour and TV work, added: “We spoke to Lee Ridley, the Lost Voice Guy, and he is also really happy to be taking part. In fact, he was speechless!” Smile For Life, based in Gosforth, provides work placements at its Gosforth-based Café Beam, as well as life changing equipment and experiences, to disabled and disadvantaged youngsters in the North East. Paula Gascoigne, charity CEO, says she is so excited to finally be bringing this show back after having to cancel the 2020 show due to Covid-19. She said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch Smile For A Night which will be bigger and better than ever. “We have some of the biggest stars in the North East taking part, all for a good cause, and we are so grateful to them for giving up their time for us. This promises to be a memorable, incredible show. “For your chance to be part of this special show we have opened up the final performance slot to our amazing local talent, working alongside some fantastic established names like the Lost Voice Guy and Danny Adams. “So, if you have a talent that can wow our judges and an audience of 600 please do get in touch.” For tickets for the show, which is likely to sell out fast, go to: www.playhousewhitleybay.co.uk/ events/smile-for-a-night-variety-show/ To find out more about the charity head to www.smileforlife.org.uk or search Smile For Life on social media.

BOOKS
Local Author Adds Sixth Book To His North East Crime Series
Be it the foiled bombing of Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, a girl snatched from the Quayside, a body washed up on St. Mary's Lighthouse or the desperate hunt for a drug gangmaster, Colin Youngman is transforming the North-East into an electrifying crime hotspot with his Ryan Jarrod series of Tyneside detective novels. The author first came up with the rough plot for his crime fiction over 20 years ago but shelved the idea after struggling to find the perfect setting. What he didn't know was that inspiration lay at his doorstep. "I had an original story started many moons ago and just couldn't get the setting right. Then, I attended a writer's convention where I bumped into LJ Ross, who is another Northumberland writer who sets her books in the region. I got talking to her and it dawned on me, ‘why don't I try that?’ Colin re-visited his old story, changed some of the locations to places he’d worked, landmarks he was familiar with, and pubs he’d got drunk in, and suddenly he found it all fell into place. The first of his books, The Angel Falls, was published in 2020 and saw the birth of main character Ryan Jarrod. Fast forward two years, having won over readers in the region and further afield, there are now six stories in the series with a seventh in the pipeline – and they have been described as ‘LJ Ross

AUTHOR: Colin Youngman meets Ann Cleeves but with the gritty, urban twist of Ian Rankin and Peter James.’ The author’s venture into crime fiction was only meant to spawn one book but, given the reception the initial release received, the Geordie author - who now lives in Northumberland - kept it going. “I try to depict the region as it is – warts and all – and I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback the books have received. I didn't start off with the intention of writing a series but people kept asking me for more. The response has all been really humbling." The Ryan Jarrod books – by Colin Youngman – are available from Amazon in e-book and paperback formats (the entire e-book series costs less than a Domino’s!), with paperbacks also available from Cogito Books, Hexham. ■ www.facebook.com/colin.youngman.author Buy the books online at: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08FMH3M8D

Raspberry Swiss Roll
Home-made Swiss rolls are so good, and surprisingly easy to make. Prep - 30 mins Cook - 10 to 30 mins Serves - 6 to 8 Ingredients • •
4 free-range eggs 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust ( you can also use icing sugar) ½ tsp vanilla bean paste 75g self-raising flour 200ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 200g whole raspberries For the raspberry jam 150g caster sugar ½ lemon, zest, and juice 350g raspberries
• • • • • • • • •
Method 1.
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 and line a 23x33cm/9x13in Swiss roll tin with greaseproof baking paper. Place the eggs, sugar and vanilla paste into a bowl and whisk together until pale, fluffy, and thickened to the consistency of double cream. Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold it in preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread it

evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until just firm to the touch. Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge and set aside to cool a little. Pour the double cream and vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks. Make the jam – Heat a pan until hot. Add the sugar, lemon zest and juice and cook for 3–4 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3–5 minutes until they break down and thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries. Starting with the longest edge of the sponge and using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar and cut into slices to serve.

It looks bright out there darling. Have you seen my sunglasses? A destination for beautiful eye wear and advanced eye care in the heart of Tynemouth has been lovingly transformed. It’s not just the décor however. In a building steeped with history, you can now experience the futuristic benefits of a specially designed diagnostic suite with OCT and Optomap to look in depth at the health of your eyes as part of your eye examination. Being independent, the people at Concept take time and effort to look after you from the moment you walk in. Of course, you may just wish to browse. And why not. With the best sunglasses collection, lenses and frame selection In the region, there’s plenty to discover. Of course, it’s not just about looking good. It’s about being safe. You’re probably aware that shade does not provide complete protection from ultraviolet light. Fifty percent of UV radiation still gets through from reflected and scattered light. The recommendation is therefore to protect your eyes and skin from the sun in every situation, whether in bright light or cloudy weather. This means that not only spectacle wearers but everyone should ensure that their eyes are well-protected from solar UV-A and UV-B radiation. The good news is that at Concept, all clear and tinted eyeglass lenses and sunglass lenses from ZEISS are equipped with the UV filter, so there is no need to order it separately. Customise your frames with the right lenses to offer you full protection. Now let’s talk about some classic frames..
CHANEL What we have in store for you is an affirmation of this designers emblematic and timeless identity. Concept is underpinned by people. Our frame narrative reflects this with glasses that embody the CHANEL spirit. Gabrielle

Earsdon Scarecrow Festival Now in its 7th year, the Earsdon Scarecrow Festival will be happening again on Saturday 17th September at 1pm to 4pm. The event brings in people from more than just the local area. All of the village residents, and those who use the village for business, are invited to display a scarecrow, so come along and try to spot them all! There is never a theme, and consequently it’s always a surprise to discover what weird and wonderful creations have popped up on the big day. This year you can vote for your favourite scarecrow, and the three most popular will be awarded a trophy. As well as the scarecrows, there are events in the Eccles Hall including a cake stall, tombola, children’s crafts, games, and decorate-a-cupcake. And the now-famous Earsdon Trail and Quiz can be picked up in the Eccles Hall too. You’ll be able to look around the historic St Alban’s church in the village, as part of the national Heritage Open Days. The Earsdon Trail and Quiz also take you into this beautiful church.
If you’re lucky, you might bump into two living scarecrows, hear some Northumbrian Pipers, and possibly catch a local singing group. A coffee car will be in attendance to provide well-needed refreshments, and our two local pubs The Cannon Inn and The Red Lion will be open and serving as usual. You can find all the fun happening at Eccles Hall, and around the village of Earsdon, North Tyneside, NE25 9JX. Visit facebook.com/events/362089025805531 for updates.

North Tyneside Beaches Gain National Recognition North Tyneside’s award-winning beaches will continue to fly their Blue Flags with pride this summer after being ranked among the best in the country for another year. King Edwards Bay, Tynemouth Longsands, and Whitley Bay have achieved the Blue Flag standard every year since 1994. Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy announced the winners of the prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for summer 2022, as the international Blue Flag celebrates its 35th anniversary. This year 80 beaches have met the high standard required for a Blue Flag award, while 128 beaches are now proudly displaying a Seaside Award. Not only did our three local beaches gain Blue Flag status, they are among an elite group of only 57 across the country to win BOTH awards. The coveted Blue Flag is an international award bestowed on the cleanest and best-maintained beaches in the country, while the Seaside Award recognises the highest standards of beach management in England. Councillor Sandra Graham, North Tyneside’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards signify that these beaches are absolutely first-class and that people can enjoy themselves in a clean, healthy, and safe environment. “Winning these awards for another year is great news for our residents and visitors. It fills me with a great sense of pride, and I would like to thank our hard-working staff and volunteers for the work they do to maintain standards and retain these awards. “We have been through some difficult times over the last couple of years and it’s fantastic that people can come out, be together with families and friends, and come to enjoy our stunning beaches. The Blue Flag is known all over the world and when people visit North Tyneside from other parts of the UK or overseas, they know the significance of it. We remain optimistic about the progress being made 30

to regain the Blue Flag at Cullercoats. And we will commit extra resources again to keep our coast and beaches pristine this summer.” Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison OgdenNewton OBE said: “The success of these beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our blue spaces – from beach managers and volunteers to local residents and businesses. The huge commitment needed to maintain marvellous beaches worthy of these awards cannot be underestimated. “People who visit a beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award can be assured the beach will be clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as international bathing water quality standards.” The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards are aimed at improving the quality of England’s coastline and promoting the country’s best beaches. Blue Flag is an international award managed by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education. It is only presented to well-managed beaches with excellent water quality and environmental education programmes, while Seaside Awards are presented to the best beaches in England and celebrate the quality and diversity of our coastline. Among the criteria beaches are assessed against are: • Safety and services, such as first aid, lifeguards where necessary • Environmental information including displaying details about local eco systems • Water quality – Blue Flag beaches must meet the ‘excellent’ water quality standard as set out in the EU bathing water directive and Seaside Award winners must meet the 'sufficient’ standard. • Environmental management, including litter and waste • Let's hope the weather does it's bit and let's us all enjoy our fantastic beaches this summer.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING Genres: Drama, Mystery Age Rating: 15 Release date: 22nd July
US novelist Delia Owens’ twelvemillion-selling tale of outsiderdom promises to be every bit as stunning when it arrives on the big screen this summer. Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kya, a young girl who leaves her solitary life in the swamplands of South Carolina for the local town, where she experiences love, hate, emotional awakenings and accusations of murder. An aching human drama and a love letter to the American South of the 1960s, Where The Crawdads Sing invites audiences to immerse themselves in director Olivia Newman’s time-capsule world where young hearts come of age in the summer heat. Don’t bet against it being the most beautiful movie you watch all year.

his master battle crime across Metropolis. But when Superman and the rest of the Justice League are captured, it falls to Krypto to mount a rescue mission with the help of a ragtag team of rescue animals and Batman’s pushy pooch, Ace. Directed and co-written by The Lego Batman Movie screenwriter Jared Stern, you’ll laugh it up at DC League Of Super-Pets. And if the script is comedy gold, then it’s sent over the top by the bickering chemistry of lead voice talents Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, who butt heads even harder than they did in Jumanji.
NOPE
Genres: Horror, Myster, Sci-Fi Age Rating: To be confirmed Release date:12th August
As horror cinema’s hottest new blood, Jordan Peele made his name with Get Out and Us. Now, Nope finds the director gleefully teasing his fanbase with a cryptic trailer that gives us powercuts on a lonely ranch, horses whinnying in terror, lights in the skies and what one character calls a “bad miracle” – but no clear idea of what this third feature will be about.
BULLET TRAIN
Genres: Thriller, Action, Age Rating: To Be Confirmed Release date: 3rd August
Japan’s high-speed bullet trains are the backdrop to this action-comedy from Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, a veteran killer who wants out of the game, but takes one last job collecting a briefcase. It’s a mission complicated by the rogue’s gallery of international assassins onboard, armed to the teeth and competing for the prize. Based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kōtarō Isaka, the film also stars Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, and Sandra Bullock. Bullet Train moves so fast you might just fall out of your seat. But the revelation is the humour of this all-star movie, with Pitt at his deadpan best and action scenes inspired by vintage Jackie Chan.
DON’T WORRY DARLING
Genres: Thriller Age Rating: 15 Release date: 23rd September
The American dream of the 1950s blackens into a nightmare in Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller that takes up residence under your skin. Alice is a young, happy wife whose marriage to company man Jack comes with just one caveat: never, ever ask him about his work on the secret Victory Project. While her fellow wives cook and clean, Alice becomes consumed by Jack’s secrets and haunted by hallucinations, with director Olivia Wilde working the audience’s gears as the tension builds to a gut-punch climax. Creepy, clever and with standout performances from Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.
GAR DE N IN G
The Benefits of an Allotment During World War II, and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed, so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. During the 1960’s, allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket. But with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge. And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of most consumers. Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own. Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, microorganisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week (9th-14th August) is encouraging gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotment. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil. They are nature’s vital helpers. To take part in the survey visit 36

www.nsalg.org.uk/news-events-campaigns/nationalallotments-week/ Many allotment gardeners will tell you that a spell on the plot nurturing plants and contemplating nature makes them feel calmer and more hopeful and there have been recent studies that have measured this benefit. The physical benefits of regular spells of gardening help plot-holders to keep fit even if they have sedentary jobs, the physical exercise also contributes to their mental well-being. Gardening can also help to maintain good gait and balance in older gardeners and help with cognitive decline. If managed properly, an allotment can produce enough food to supplement a family’s weekly shop, with fresh fruit and vegetables over the year. Allotment gardeners can choose to garden organically and avoid ingesting chemicals that are likely to be present on shop bought fruit and vegetables. In a survey of National Allotment Society members nearly every person said their love of allotment gardening comes from the fresh air, home grown produce, healthy lifestyle and like-minded people this activity offers. As many new plot-holders discover, growing vegetables requires acquiring new knowledge and skills and the satisfaction gained from eating their first home grown tomato or new potato makes them taste even more delicious! Working a plot year- round means that allotment holders experience the seasons, witness the behaviour of birds, insects and other animals and gain an understanding of the eco-system. This appreciation of the natural world also has the potential to inspire more environmentally aware. To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council (see the websites listed below). Price and availability vary and in some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. Funding Secured For Walking and Cycling Scheme Visitors to the North Tyneside coast will find the experience safer, greener, and more accessible after ambitious walking and cycling plans received a multi-million pound boost. North Tyneside Council will move ahead with plans for a permanent, segregated, two-way safe space between North Shields Fish Quay and St Mary’s Lighthouse, after securing £3.5m from Active Travel England. The scheme – known as the Seafront Sustainable Route – will make it easier for people to choose active and green ways of getting around, while better connecting communities and coastal businesses and attractions. Speeds will be reduced to 20mph and there will be additional traffic calming measures, including raised crossings for easier access to the coast, and motorists will continue to be able to travel along the seafront between Whitley Bay and Tynemouth in both directions. The scheme will make the seafront a safer and more pleasant place to walk and cycle, thereby increasing the number of people using sustainable forms of transport for a healthier lifestyle and helping to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality. Footpaths will be resurfaced along the length of the route, as will large sections of the highway, to enhance the experience of visiting the award-winning coastline. It aims to build on the success of a temporary popup route that was in place during summer 2020, while seeking to address issues that were identified. The council received confirmation of its successful funding bid from Active Travel England, the newly formed Government agency, led by Chris Boardman. It clears the way for the council to draw up detailed designs before carrying out further consultation on the preferred options. 40

A six-week consultation exercise was carried out in October 2021 and received more than 11,000 comments from 1,500 people. The feedback is being used to help shape the proposals. Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “We are delighted to have secured this funding after a great deal of hard work and planning, and a bid that received high praise from Active Travel England. The new route will be a scheme of the highest quality, it will have wide-ranging benefits for North Tyneside and will support people to access cheap, healthy, zero emission travel, while providing a boost to air quality and people’s physical and mental wellbeing. “The coast is one of our greatest and more cherished assets and we believe this scheme will make it safer and more attractive to access our coast, while helping to ease congestion and improve the air quality. It will better connect our coastal communities and link the seafront with planned improvements in North Shields as part of the regeneration programme there. We are very excited about the way this scheme is taking shape and we will seek local people’s views again when the design work is complete.” In July 2019, the council declared a climate emergency and set a target to reduce the carbon footprint of the authority and the borough by 50% by 2023. But the council has already achieved a 52% reduction and brought forward its carbon net-zero target by twenty years to 2030. The new route will support those aims even in the construction phase by using materials with highly recycled elements and a minimal carbon impact. Carbon offsetting measures such as planting and soft landscaping will be implemented along the route. Construction could begin as early as September 2022 and will be carefully phased to avoid disruption during the busiest periods.

Step Out for Parkinson’s UK Unite with thousands of others to accelerate breakthroughs in Parkinson’s research. People in Newcastle can now sign up to Walk for Parkinson’s Newcastle, Quayside on Saturday 27 August. The money raised will help fund Parkinson’s UK’s vital work, which aims to transform the lives of people with Parkinson’s and their loved ones. In the UK, there are around 145,000 people already living with Parkinson’s, including an estimated 6,300 in the North East. Broadcaster and journalist Dave Clark is supporting Walk for Parkinson’s. Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 44 and has since helped raise over £350,000 for the charity through walking challenges, including an incredible £43,000 in 2020 when he walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall. He said: “I’ve been living with Parkinson’s for 11 years now. It’s not always been easy, but I’m determined to stay positive and embrace life. Throwing myself into fundraising and awarenessraising about the condition is one of the ways I do that. “Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, so finding a cure really can’t wait. Uniting with thousands of others to take part in Walk for Parkinson’s is a great way to help move us closer to that goal. However you choose to get involved, you’ll be accelerating breakthroughs in Parkinson’s research. Together, we can make a real difference.”

How Can We Help You and Your Family?
by Jacqueline Emmerson of Emmersons Solicitors I am on a mission at the moment to find those folks who are falling through the cracks in society. Pre covid was bad enough but being isolated and unable to seek help is far worse now. As regular readers will know, I spend a lot of time assisting older clients who simply have no one to support or help them. You may not even know what help is available to you. Such clients will typically have been only children who never married. Or who were divorced years ago and don’t have siblings or children. Some of my clients have long term mental health problems such as schizophrenia, they can function on a day to day basis but cannot manage all of their affairs. I am also particularly concerned about older members of the gay community. Especially those who were in the forces and had to spend their working lives hiding the fact that they were gay. This may mean that they were unable to marry, they may have avoided the gay community who would ordinarily have provided some support. I have been trying to highlight the plight of this group of people to various organisations including SSAFA. I have also noticed that in traditional religious families individuals have spent their lives hiding the fact that they are gay so as not to upset their parents or their religious community. Again they may remain unmarried and without children to help them as they get older. Over the next few months Emmersons Solicitors will be holding free events to inform and offer help. In the meantime if you need help please don’t hesitate to contact me. What Type of Help? There are many things that we attend to on behalf of those who are struggling to manage their affairs. If we have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place then we can mange your money. In the first instance I would make sure that your home is insured. Many clients let this lapse without realising. I would check standing orders and direct debits to make sure that you are only paying out money when you need to do so. I regularly find that huge sums of money are being paid out to charities as one charity after another contacts the vulnerable to seek help. That is fine so long as you can afford to make such payments. And if you are paying to charities do you know how many you send money to and how much per month? You may be struggling to cope with shopping, cleaning, washing and ironing etc. You may feel that you can’t afford help. But if your finances were under control this may free up money so that you could pay someone to assist you. You may be entitled to state benefits such as Attendance Allowance. This can be 48
|
ABC MAGAZINES
worth circa £4,000 per year. Again, this money could be used to pay for someone to come in and support you even a couple of times a week. And it doesn’t have to be fifteen minutes here and there. There are many private agencies, who are often cheaper than social services, who can offer you a minimum of an hour per visit. Did you know that there are agencies who will take you out for the day. Do you fancy a trip to the Northumberland Coast or Durham City. Do you want someone to take you to and from your cricket club, or to watch the football? Do you want someone to make meals for you? The choice is yours. We can also help to sort out your home. Has it all become a bit too much. Have you started to hoard things so that your home is feeling too cluttered? We have a team that will come in and work with us and you to turn things around. We can arrange for a one off deep clean, the removal of items you no longer need or want and weekly cleaning. We can also get all of your paperwork under control. This might include finding old savings policies that you have forgotten about. We found one recently for a client that was worth over £40,000! We can organise your bank accounts into one place and bring in a financial advisor to ensure that your money is in the correct place for you. What If You Need to go Into a Care Home? This can be a huge decision and there will be a lot to think about. I have looked after the homes of clients for years who have not wanted to sell. It is your decision as to when or if you sell a home that may have been the place of years of happy family memories. I have dealt with council tax and council tax rebates. Water rates, which should not be paid when a house is empty. Gas and electricity, care home fees and spending money. Normal house insurance is not enough when a house is empty for more than thirty days. We deal with specialist insurers in order to protect our clients’ property. To sum up, we can step in and be you. We do all the work so that you don’t have to worry about everything all of the time. If you feel that you are floundering and want a chat about how we can help then you can either email me at je@emmersons-solicitors.co.uk or ring the office on 0191 2846989 and leave your name and telephone number so that I can return your call. And can I ask, have you noticed a lonely neighbour, have you popped round to see if they are coping? They might have been more in the swing of things before covid but if their day centre closed down or the club they were a member of stopped having meetings then they may have declined quite rapidly in the intervening period. Please look out for your neighbours and friends who live alone or who may be struggling to care for a relative.
If your relationship has just ended we understand that you may feel lost or worried.

LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT GETAWAY WITH UNITED GROUP TRAVEL Are you in need of a break? Local coach tourism experts Graham Wright and John Hindhaugh are taking bookings now for their United Group Travel quaity coach tours. Graham explains more... John and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow everyone to make full use of the facilities of the chosen hotel. Guaranteed free time as well as entertainment are also key factors

Help Reduce Energy Costs with Thermos Roof
With most of us facing rising energy bills, why not reduce these costs and save money instantly with a Thermos Roof insulation system in your conservatory. Here they explain more.
Conservatories are a great space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden. They are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually shortlived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons: to increase its insulating performance and enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in winter, heat is sucked out of your room and into the conservatory as soon as you open the door. During the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof, we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use, into a space you can enjoy all year round as the temperature is comfortable and constant. You will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight; 58

therefore, no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this, the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is today. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste and less time to install, saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape, transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein the external weather conditions do not dictate its use; it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter
in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a five-year warranty. We guarantee that you will be amazed by both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. ■ Please give us a call today on 01670 828 695 to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory! www.thermosroof.co.uk

A GOOD READ THE PERFECT GOLDEN CIRCLE
by Benjamin Myers England, 1989. Over the course of a burning hot summer, two very different men - traumatized Falklands veteran Calvert, and affable, chaotic Redbone - set out nightly in a clapped-out camper van to undertake an extraordinary project. Under cover of darkness, the two men traverse the fields of rural England in secret, forming crop circles in elaborate and mysterious patterns. As the summer wears on, and their designs grow ever more ambitious, the two men find that their work has become a cult international sensation - and that an unlikely and beautiful friendship has taken root as the wheat ripens from green to gold. Moving and exhilarating, tender and slyly witty, The Perfect Golden Circle is a captivating novel about the futility of war, the destruction of the English countryside, class inequality - and the power of beauty to heal trauma and fight power.
ORPHANS OF THE STORM by Celia Imrie
Nice, France, 1911: After three years of marriage, young seamstress Marcela Caretto has finally had enough. Her husband, Michael, an ambitious tailor, has become cruel and controlling and she determines to get a divorce. But while awaiting the judges’ decision on the custody of their two small boys, Michael receives news that changes everything. Meanwhile fun-loving New York socialite Margaret Hays is touring Europe with some friends. Restless, she resolves to head home aboard the most celebrated steamer in the world - RMS Titanic. As the ship sets sail for America, carrying two infants bearing false names, the paths of Marcela, Michael and Margaret cross - and nothing will ever be the same again. From the Sunday Times-bestselling author, Celia Imrie, Orphans of the Storm dives into the waters of the past to unearth a sweeping, epic tale of the sinking of the Titanic that radiates with humanity and hums with life.

A SLOW BURNING FIRE by Paula Hawkins
Laura has spent most of her life being judged. She’s seen as hot-tempered, troubled, a loner. Some even call her dangerous. Miriam knows that just because Laura is witnessed leaving the scene of a horrific murder with blood on her clothes, that doesn’t mean she’s a killer. Bitter experience has taught her how easy it is to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Carla is reeling from the brutal murder of her nephew. She trusts no one: good people are capable of terrible deeds. But how far will she go to find peace? Innocent or guilty, everyone is damaged. Some are damaged enough to kill.
THE LAMPLIGHTERS by Emma Stonex Cornwall, 1972. Three keepers vanish from a remote lighthouse, miles from the shore. The entrance door is locked from the inside. The clocks have stopped. The Principal Keeper’s weather log describes a mighty storm, but the skies have been clear all week. What happened to those three men, out on the tower? The heavy sea whispers their names. The tide shifts beneath the swell, drowning ghosts. Can their secrets ever be recovered from the waves? Twenty years later, the women they left behind are still struggling to move on. Helen, Jenny and Michelle should have been united by the tragedy, but instead it drove them apart. And then a writer approaches them. He wants to give them a chance to tell their side of the story. But only in confronting their darkest fears can the truth begin to surface . . . Inspired by real events, The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex is an intoxicating and suspenseful mystery, an unforgettable story of love and grief that explores the way our fears blur the line between the real and the imagined.
