CHOPPINGTON SOCIAL WELFARE CENTRE LOOKING TO PROVIDE OUTDOOR SPORTS FACILITIES
C
hoppington Social Welfare Centre has been a hub of activity and a vital part of the local community for many years.
The Welfare Centre is home to a whole host of groups and activities, including carpet bowls, pilates, line dancing, computer drop in classes, crafting groups, a choir and much more. The Trustee’s of Choppington Social Welfare Centre are now looking to develop an area of land they own, with the aim of providing outdoor sports facilities. They are looking to turn the land in to a facility which will cater for a range of activities, including 5 a side football, practice facilities for junior football teams, ladies netball, walking football etc, when weather conditions allow, and are looking for local residents and user groups to get in touch and let them know how they would like to use the space. They also aim to build a flood lit MUGA (Multiple Use Games Area) area that can be used in all weather conditions, all year round. However, to get the right surface, they need potential user groups to get in touch so that they can decide what surface they would need to install in the MUGA.
8
If you are part of a team, whether that be football, netball, basketball, or any other sport, Choppington Welfare would love to hear from you with your thoughts and views as to what the space could be used for. Contact Neal Rice on 01670 822028, or email neal@choppington.org with your ideas as to how the Welfare Centre could best put this space to use so that it benefits the local and wider community. Whether you run a local team, are part of a minority sport which is not catered for in the local area, or have a group of friends who are looking for somewhere to practice, Neal would be delighted to hear from you with your ideas. Choppington Welfare Centre also has a room in the main building with some slots available that the likes of volley ball, Badminton, Netball, Table Tennis can take place if any user groups are interested. It is refreshing to see a local venue garner outside opinions as to how best use the space, and that is so open to catering for the needs of the local community – take advantage of this opportunity and let them know your thoughts!
Ashington & District Male Voice Choir was formed around the time this picture of High Market was taken c1916. The Choir has a long and proud heritage and is now looking for more singers to rehearse and perform a new repertoire at venues throughout the County. All ages and abilities will be made welcome, there’s no audition, and you don’t need to be able to read music.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 18 18

orpeth is home to a fantastic selection of independent retails, with both Newgate and Bridge Street offering shoppers a wide range of unique, individual outlets. The town centre is packed with characterful retail units, none more so that the independent shops based at Packhorse Yard, tucked away halfway up Newgate Street next to TSB Bank.
David Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us “We couldn’t be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June 2016. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we pass our second anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future.” The yard is home to a small selection of local independent retailers, all bringing something unique to the town. As you stroll up the alleyway, the last unit you will see is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June this year the shop will celebrated its second birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc.) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Originally based in a smaller unit in the yard, the business has recently moved into bigger premises at the end of the yard, and now stock a wider range of products. They now stock Tamiya plastic kits and a wider range of model rail accessories. They also have expanded into teddy bears, (ideal for the adult collector and a great gift) which are proving very popular and, in the next few
weeks, they will be receiving more bears from Steiff and Charlie bears. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www.jandjmodels. co.uk, or follow them on facebook. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. The newest arrival is the popular Sewing Box of Morpeth, who have recently relocated to the yard from their premises on Newgate Street. The Sewing Box has been established for over 40 years, and their values as an independent family business are as strong as ever, and they are delighted to show off our gorgeous new premises on Packhorse Yard.

MISSING TEETH? JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, DISCUSSES THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO REPLACE A MISSING TOOTH OR TEETH
I
f you have a gap or spaces due to a missing tooth or teeth then there may or may not be a need to fill it. The need to fill a gap really depends on where it is and how it affects you, your oral health and also your general health and well-being.
Some people have a missing front tooth and the appearance does not concern them at all, however other people (me for instance) would not want to be without a front tooth. The options that are available generally fall into 4 main categories as described below, however every person needs to be specifically assessed by their dentist as every case is different and there will be circumstances where some options are suitable while others are not.
DO NOTHING
Sometimes the simplest and cheapest option is to do nothing. This can also be the best, but depends very much on where the gaps are. Loosing teeth can have a huge impact on people ranging from a negative psychological impact and lack of confidence socially due to missing front teeth, to not being able to chew food properly. The loss of a lot of teeth may also make your mouth and lips look sunken in. But if, for example, you have a space from a single tooth at the back of your mouth then you may not even notice too much of a
change in your appearance or function or health of your mouth and therefore you may think replacing it is not worth the time and cost of dental treatment.
DENTURES
Dentures can replace spaces from just one lost tooth (a partial denture) or the loss of all teeth, (a full denture). Unless retained by implants they are removable, which means you can take them in and out of your mouth yourself. It is important to be able to take dentures out to clean them but also to enable you to properly clean any natural teeth. Dentures involve false teeth being placed into a base material that is usually made from either a hard pink acrylic plastic, Valplast (a "flexible" nylon resin), or cobalt chromium metal. Each of these materials has their advantages and disadvantages, some of which are discussed below: Acrylic: This is a hard pink plastic material and tends to be the cheapest base material used. It can be used to make a range of dentures from replacing just 1 tooth, (a partial denture) to all your teeth, (a full denture). The pink acrylic rests on top of the gums, and how secure they are depends on how well they fit. They are usually easy to adjust and relatively inexpensive compared to the other denture materials Cobalt chrome: A metal denture base made with cobalt chrome may be a good alternative if you have had
www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk
23
FLEXIBLE: ValplastÂŽ is a pink nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures
problems with an acrylic denture fracturing, as the metal base will not fracture. Dentures made of this metal are more expensive to make. Unlike an acrylic partial denture a cobalt chrome denture has the advantage of being able to be retained and supported with metal rests and clasps around some of the remaining natural teeth. This means it can be very secure in your mouth. Perhaps one possible disadvantage is very occasionally you may be able to see a very small amount of metal if a tooth nearer the front of your mouth is clasped, but your dentist would always endeavour to design the denture to reduce the chance of this happening. Although the denture base is made of metal the false teeth are white and attached to the metal with pink acrylic to look like natural gum and teeth. ValplastÂŽ: This is a pink "flexible" nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures only. It is supported only by your gums and does not have any metal clasps that will show. ValplastÂŽ will also give a life-time guarantee that the denture base will not fracture. Due to the flexibility of this material they are an alternative if you have had problems with an acrylic denture fracturing. There are certainly other advantages and disadvantages of all three denture materials, so without an examination with your dentist it would be difficult to determine what would be the best material for you. Every case where a denture is needed is different and needs to be assessed so the best material is used specifically for your requirements.
BRIDGES
Before I became a dentist, I did not have a clue what a bridge was. I am sure therefore there are many of you whom also do not know what they are. A bridge replaces a lost tooth or teeth by using either natural teeth or implants next to the gap and they are cemented in permanently. The natural teeth or implants beside the gap are used to support the false tooth/teeth. The proper dental term for the false tooth is the pontic and for the supports are called the abutments. They can be made from gold, metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic or a mixture of these materials. The pontic is permanently cemented to the abutment tooth. The natural teeth supporting the bridge must therefore be healthy and strong enough, just like the design of a bridge crossing a river; if the river is very wide, then mechanically a support on either bank may not be strong enough to support the crossing. Your dentist will examine and advise if the gap is suitable for a bridge. There are generally two reasons when a bridge is not suitable. The first is if the space to be filled is too long and secondly if the teeth at either side of the space are not strong and healthy enough to support it. There are generally 3 types of bridge. A fixed-fixed or conventional bridge involves attaching the pontic to abutment teeth on both sides of the gap.
24 24 24
This means the abutment teeth have to be drilled to the correct shape so a crown, or cap, will fit over the top of them. This procedure is destructive as the dentist needs to shape the abutment teeth with a drill and therefore there is always a risk of sensitivity or a problem with the nerve of the tooth at a later date. Your dentist will discuss the risks and benefits of any treatment with you. A cantilever bridge is when a single pontic is stuck to an abutment tooth with a crown on only one side of the gap. An acid etch or Maryland bridge is a small bridge replacing just a single tooth. The porcelain pontic is attached to a small metal wing which is cemented onto the back of only one tooth. The metal work is on the back so you cannot see it when you smile. Only the back of the abutment tooth needs to be slightly shaved and therefore there is very little drilling to be done. This type of bridge is much less destructive and therefore there is a smaller risk of sensitivity and nerve damage. Different bridge types also have their advantages and disadvantages, and may not be suitable for every gap. All cases are different and your dentist would need to assess your individual needs before planning a bridge.

IMPLANTS
It is my view that generally there is a huge misconception about implants. I'm sure some people think if they have poor teeth then they can simply have them removed and replaced with implants and then that's it! Job done and there is no maintenance! This could not be further from the truth as an implant still needs to be maintained and looked after. Just like a normal tooth an implant can have gum disease around it which can make it loose and fail. Not all implants will be a success and if they fail they have to be removed. What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone. An implant can be used to support just one false tooth, or multiple implants can be used to replace a full set of teeth. You have to have surgery to have an implant which involves the titanium post being screwed into the bone of either the upper or lower jaw. Before an implant is placed, you need to be assessed to determine if the condition of your jaw bone is good enough. There are also risk factors that need to be considered such as medical problems, smoking, the existing health of your teeth, gums and mouth as not everyone is suitable to have an implant. After surgery and once the bone has attached to the implant and it is strong then the false tooth or teeth are References www.valplast.com www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/bridgesand-partial-dentures www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/dental-health-bridges#1 www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/implants
then screwed into the implants. The implants need to be cleaned twice a day as part of your daily routine. Just like your natural teeth, implants will last longer the better you care for them. This also involves regular visits to the dentist to monitor and maintain them. It is vitally important that after you have implants you still go to the dentist regularly: having an implant does not mean you can forget about your teeth. Implants certainly do not come with a lifetime guarantee! The cost of implants varies but the price is definitely in the thousands not the hundreds. The parts are expensive to buy; they are like the Rolls Royce in replacing missing teeth. If I had a push bike, it would get me from A to B, just like a Rolls Royce, however if I needed a new tyre for my bike it would cost me 10s of pounds. However, If a needed a new tyre for my Rolls Royce (in my dreams I may add), then a new tyre would cost 100's of pounds. The point I am trying to make is the cost of the implant parts are expensive to buy initially but also to maintain and replace due to wear and tear. This has been a very brief whirlwind tour of all the options to replace missing teeth and is in no way a complete article. In summary there are many different options to replace a missing tooth or teeth. If you want to have a gap filled then it is best to visit your dentist and have a thorough assessment so they can discuss all the choices that suit your specific needs.

COUNTY PARKS NAMED AMONG THE UK’S BEST GREEN SPACES
N
ine of Northumberland’s parks have been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world.
Northumberland’s winning green spaces are Ridley Park, Blyth; Dr Pit Park, Bedlington; Astley Park, Seaton Delaval; Alexandra Park, Cramlington; Carlisle Park, Morpeth; Hexham Park; Castle Vale and Coronation Park Berwick; Plessey Woods Country Park and Bolam Lake Country Park. They are among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that will receive prestigious Green Flag honours – the mark of a quality park or green space. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Councillor Glen Sanderson, cabinet member for environment and local services at Northumberland County Council said: “We are absolutely delighted that all of the parks we entered have yet again achieved Green Flag Awards from Keep Britain Tidy. “They highlight and recognise that residents and
visitors are benefiting from green spaces of the very highest quality. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and these awards celebrate the dedication of our staff and volunteers to maintaining and improving our parks." “To win year on year is a great achievement but we’re not complacent. We’re also progressing a £1m investment on a range of work at Druridge Bay, Plessey Woods and Bolam Lake Country Parks to significantly enhance their appeal as great places to visit.” International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd added: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags.”

BURGHAM PARK GOLF CLUB OPEN TO ALL KEVIN GOW, A PGA PROFESSIONAL FOR 36 YEARS, HAS GONE FULL CIRCLE IN HIS CAREER AND RETURNED HOME, TO BRING ONE OF NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEST AND MOST POPULAR GOLF COURSES BACK TO ITS FORMER GLORY
B
urgham Park is a Championship standard parkland course, based just off the A1 a few miles north of Morpeth. The course itself boasts panoramic views of the Simonside Hills to the West and the coast to the East.
Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James was part of the original design team who put the course together in 1994, and it is still regarded as one of the regions finest and most challenging courses. Kevin brings a wealth of golfing experience to the club, starting his golfing life with the encouragement from his grandfather at Morpeth Golf Club aged eight. At the age of just 17 he started as an assistant golf professional with Ken Saint at Bedlington golf club and in 1981 he moved on to run Ken's second shop at Blyth golf club. 3 years later he got a call from Martin Jackson, professional at Morpeth golf club, to ask if he would consider coming to Morpeth as his assistant. As Morpeth was very dear in his heart, and still is, this was an offer he could not turn down. While at Morpeth Martin helped Kevin pass his full PGA exams, in 1985. In 1986 Kevin then move to Stockholms Golfklubb, in Sweden, where he spent two years as teaching Professional, before he was promoted as the head club professional, along with wife Jacqui he spent a further 5 years in Sweden 30
before returning home in 1993 to take on the position of club Professional at Houghton-le-Spring golf club. In March 2011 Kevin took on a five year lease of Cocken Lodge Golf course, near Durham, in the five years at Cocken he gained valuable knowledge and experience in running his own golf club, which will put him in good stead to succeed at Burgham Park. Now 36 years on Kevin, along with the help from his wife, Jacqui, daughters Samantha and Georgia, and younger brother Jason is taking on the leasehold of Burgham Park golf club. The golf course is not the only thing that has been given a new lease of life. The venue is now serving a wide range of home-cooked food, wide a varied menu of traditional British favourites. They also serve a traditional Sunday Lunch, which is proving very popular, especially with non-members who like a drive out on a Sunday and a lunch in a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views. So, whether you are a keen golfer looking for a welldesigned, picturesque and challenging course, or are looking for a new venue for your Sunday Lunches, a venue with stunning views and hearty home-cooked food, Burgham Park could be the perfect destination. We offer a huge range of natural products, environmentally friendly ones, but really it’s always been about community. When people come

whole range of social events, parties, workshops and training courses within the store itself. As the business approaches its first birthday, this is only set to continue with the store’s latest offering now including a much demanded, in house pet grooming salon, offering a range of natural grooming treatments. With customer demand for the highly anticipated salon continuing to grow, the team are anticipating the need for a second groomer to join their enterprise by summer. Building on the already strong community feel of the Morpeth store, My Pet HQ are looking to further expand their services with the opening of My Pet Café. The new addition, which will be coming soon, will offer customers an animal friendly, welcoming meeting place to catch up with friends and family outside of My Pet HQ’s popular social events. To celebrate their first year in business, the team at My Pet HQ looked to Morpeth Fair Day to plan a special celebration to mark their first birthday with Doodle Bugs Crafts and Ceramics offering face painting, and a showcase from Herbal Dog Co. With a range of activities taking place across the store, the team welcome Morpeth locals, and people visiting the town to pop in and join the fun. Diane Coppen, one of the co-founders of My Pet HQ, explained: “It was really important for us to make Morpeth Fair Day a big part of our first birthday celebration since it was actually on Fair Day 2017 that we first opened our doors to the public. This year we’ve sponsored the 2nd Annual Fun Dog Show, which will be raising money for Wag and Company. It’s a charity that has been close to our hearts for a long time and we do already offer space for the charity to undertake assessments, as well as offering members 10% off instore purchases and grooming.”

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE
Whether you’re a small business, sole trader or have a site as a hobby or side-hustle, having a good website is essential. Aube Creative share their 10 ways to make sure your website is as easy to use (and as user-friendly) as possible... MAKE IT IS SMARTPHONE-FRIENDLY
ALWAYS USE RELEVANT IMAGERY
MAKE SURE IT LOADS QUICKLY
WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!
We live in a Smartphone Society (Google claims 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead) so your website must display beautifully on mobile phones and tablets. People have less patience these days. Always make sure your website loads quickly and presents them what they want to see and sharpish. Faster speeds also improve your overall Google ranking. Good quality hosting always helps.
MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE
If a full-on photo shoot is out of the question you can always use good quality stock photography instead. Make sure the images match what your content is explaining. Avoid using images from free stock libraries which everyone uses over and over again. Keep it really simple. Don't bombard your readers with jargon only you and your team can understand. If neccessary, use a glossary. And avoid spelling mistakes.
CALLS-TO-ACTION
Develop an SEO strategy. Consider the search terms your audience might use to find you. Include content that's relevant: how-to videos, blog articles, e-books...
What do you want people to do once they've landed on your website? CTA buttons are one of the many elements used to indicate the next action a user should take. Example call-to-actions are: Download your Price List, Newsletter sign-up, Enter a competition...
MAKE IT EASY TO NAVIGATE
DON'T FORGET YOUR CONTACT INFO
Stick to navigation protocols people have come to expect. Always ensure navigation buttons are obvious and easily identifiable (towards the top of the page is best) and that all your links are working correctly so the user can quickly switch from page to page.
DISPLAY A STRONG CONSISTENT BRAND MESSAGE
Project the right image. Position your logo and core message in the top left hand corner. It’s the part of the screen to which our eyes are most naturally drawn.
Make it VERY easy for people to get in touch with you. You'd be surprised how many websites don't display correct contact info on every page. And it's so important!
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE
Your website is usually the first glimpse a potential new customer will get of your business. And first impressions last forever. Asking a professional to help can often save you time and money while you focus on developing your business instead.

Luxury Cuddle Rooms are designed in the style of standard living rooms to make dogs feel at home during rest and relaxation time. MICHAEL METCALF CARPETS A FAMILY BUSINESS WITH FIRST CLASS SERVICE
M
ichael Metcalf Carpets has been trading since 1969, nearly 50 years! Michael was originally a professional footballer with Aberdeen who opened his carpet business near his home in Bedlington Station once his sporting career was over. In time he expanded with high street shops in Morpeth, Bedlington and Whitley Bay. For 45 years the surrounding towns and villages were provided with excellent service until Michael retired in 2014 and sold the business on.
Maurice Hayton and Anna Artemyeva the new business owners, thus inherited a long standing carpet and flooring business which has direct accounts with all of the major and reputable UK carpet manufacturers and suppliers, meaning that they are able to offer new and existing customers 40
alike as extensive a collection of carpet products that can be found anywhere.
A COMPANY GOING FORWARD
Maurice has been in the carpet trade since leaving school, and trained as a carpet fitter. In his mid twenties he entered the Carpet Fitter of the Year competition achieving second place in the North East and then progressing to the national semi finals. He then went on to serve four of the North East’s largest department stores as an installation advisor while operating also as a freelance carpet estimator and sales agent. Additionally he worked for many years with one of Newcastle’s leading team of interior designers; so matching colours and textures together for customers when requested to comes naturally to him. This background experience is now available exclusively to the customers of Michael Metcalf Carpets as he operates as their Estimating and Installation Manager. It is the top priority of the company to offer the highest quality of advice, service, and fitting. Anna is the Company Secretary and Sales Manager. With a degree in accountancy and economics, she spent her career in banking, progressing to working as a bank
inspector for fifteen years. Anna manages the smooth running and efficiency of the business, ensuring that customers enjoy the finest possible service. Michael Metcalf Carpets is now a member of the ACG, the largest buying group in the UK which is designed to support independent carpet retailers by obtaining discounts from manufacturers which the members can pass on to their customers. This means that the superior bespoke service and unrivalled quality of fitting that you will receive accompanies very competitive pricing.
MORPETH
The Morpeth showroom enjoys a prominent location at the eastern end of Bridge Street, directly opposite the beautiful St Georges United Reformed Church, and positioned conveniently just over the road from one of the towns largest car parks. Wool rich products from the UK’s finest manufacturers are on display in this recently refurbished studio, including Adams, Penthouse, Cormar, Manx, Ulster, Brockway, Westex, Cavalier, Gaskell, Hugh Mackay, John Lanham Watts, Alternative Flooring, and others including the quirky and interesting 100% wool loop pile Telenzo carpet from Holland. Bespoke factory made to measure rugs are available with a large selection of border designs and fabrics from Crucial Trading, who also have a fabulous range of sisal flooring. The shop employs a fitting expert who has 30 years experience of working with sisal, the most difficult of all carpets to install correctly.
BEDLINGTON
The head office was originally on Glebe Road, but as the company began to expand three years ago, a larger premises was sought on the High Street and the business eventually located to 16 Front Street West. Two large car parks are to the rear of the building. In addition to the same wool products found in Morpeth, on display at this store is a very large selection of the latest bleach cleanable and super soft polypropylene carpet, and also budget ranges from as little as ÂŁ6.00 per square meter. READ ALL ABOUT IT! LOCAL ACADEMY STUDENTS ESTABLISH THEIR OWN NEWSLETTER
I
n order to showcase the best that St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy has to offer, a group of Sixth Form students have come together to establish the Academy’s very own newsletter.
Taking inspiration from their media studies and current journalism professionals that they admire, over the last few weeks the students have been working tirelessly to collate their stories and photographs to ensure that their first publication has been a success. students completing a week of alternative-curriculum studies including visits to local business TT Electronics as well as a vast selection of on-site learning activities including building ‘geo-dome’ emergency shelters, landscaping the school grounds (with support from Straughan’s Landscaping, Wansbeck Garden Centre and Hepscott Garden Centre), geo-caching and vehicle maintenance (sponsored by The Lion Garage, Bedlington and As New Auto Recyclers, Seaton Delaval). The week culminated in the annual ‘Celebration Day’ when students were able to showcase the outstanding work produced within the week as well as getting involved in demonstrations provided by Newcastle University, The Princes Trust and The Unit Health and Fitness.
