Multi-Million Pound Ashington Improvement Bid Submitted A multi-million pound bid has been submitted to the Government for transformational improvements to Ashington town centre this month. A bid for over £16m has been made to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund (LUF) - a £4.8 billion scheme for eligible local authorities to invest in infrastructure that improves everyday life, including regenerating town centres and high streets. Northumberland County Council, and its development company Advance Northumberland, along with the North of Tyne Combined Authority, would also provide additional match funding, meaning that a successful bid would deliver improvements in the town centre of well over £20m. The work is being done in collaboration with the Ashington Town Board, which is made up of business, public sector, and community leaders. The public have also been involved in shaping the plans through various forums and online feedback. The ambitious bid for Ashington focuses on two areas – Wansbeck Square and Portland Park. In Wansbeck Square, the plan is to demolish the existing outdated building and build a new attractive facility incorporating a creative hub for young people, a community hub, a performance space, a council customer service centre and a café. The project will also include a new green space providing a much-improved entrance to Ashington, next to the new train station – being built as part of the Northumberland Line. The Wansbeck Square renewal isw part of the North of Tyne Combined 6

Authority’s Northumberland Line Economic Corridor Strategy to accelerate town centre renewal and establish rail stations of the future. And, at Portland Park, part of the LUF bid is for the new six-screen cinema complex and two restaurants, which has been planned on the site for some time. Residents have been waiting long enough for the cinema, with various stories in the past leading nowhere, and we hope this time Ashington will get a cinema complex it deserves. Separately, work to improve connectivity between Grand Corner through to Portland Park from Station Road will also be undertaken as a complementary project, with funding from the North of Tyne Combined Authority and the County Council. County Councillor Wojciech Ploszaj, Northumberland County Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, said: “This is a real milestone for a major redevelopment of key parts of the town centre. “So much work has gone into preparing this bid and it’s down to the commitment of everyone involved, from residents and businesses through to councillors, Town Board members and all the other partners that we have this ambitious bid to transform the area.” John Johnston, Chief Executive of Bernicia and Chair of the Ashington Town Board, said: "Partners have worked closely with the County Council to identify a range of projects, that alongside other exciting proposals - such as the re-establishment of passenger rail services to Ashington and a new College campus, will collectively transform our town centre. I firmly believe the projects in the bid will be of great benefit to both residents and visitors and will act as a catalyst for further economic growth in our town.” More information on the Ashington Town Board is available at www.northumberland.gov.uk/ ashingtonip

A Fitting Tribute to 'Wor' Jackie - And A Football Hall Of Fame!
Cllr Lavery, who kicked off a Go Fund Me page said, “Jack Charlton brought joy to millions of people across Britain and Ireland through football, but his influence transcended the sport. In life, he was a towering monument to the values that bind our communities – and his passing deserves that legacy to be carried on for future generations.” The project received support from Ashington Town Council, who commissioned well respected sculptor Douglas Jennings to create a life-size bronze cast statue of Jack ‘The Elder’, to stand proudly in Hirst Park, overlooking the fields where Jack first kicked a football. There is much written about how football evolved in mining communities, not just in the North East, but all across the country mining communities produced some enviable talent in football. As a proud ex-mining town, there are links to the mining heritage of Ashington in people, places, words, and structures. Add to that, a town that boasts four ‘footballers of the year’, and you have an exciting heritage project in the making. As well as the statue, local football and heritage enthusiast Barry Mead has worked closely with Ashington Town Council to bring forward the story of Ashington’s football hall of fame. Jackie Milburn, Jimmy Adamson, Bobby Charlton, and Jack Charlton will all feature in ‘Ashington’s Footballing Heritage’, including special coverage of the 1966 World Cup. Using interpretation panels, the aim is to educate, motivate, and inspire people by bringing to life the story of these four players in words and pictures, with a focus on their early roots and career triumphs. Local Landscape Architect, Nick Wright of PlaceOnEarth Ltd is working alongside Structural Engineers Jasper Kerr and Classic Masonry based in North Shields to create a design that respects the separate elements of the project but brings these carefully together in a unique small garden space that will add to the already diverse range of experiences in Hirst Park. The hope is that these projects will harness the power and popularity of football as a force for good, developing partnerships with people and organisations 8

across the region to improve people’s lives and support their communities. Hirst Park was a special place for the Charlton Brothers. Jack spoke about Hirst Park in 2016, after it was named as one of 12 parks across the country to receive a share of £32 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund. At that time Jack said, “The park was a precious place where me and Bobby learned our craft, training and playing for fun, before going on to join Leeds and Manchester United and then playing in the World Cup-winning England side in 1966. Hirst Park made it all possible for us and we would play all day if we could, and we often did.” As the owners of the park, Northumberland County Council say they welcome the new features and the recognition of these achievements as part of Ashington’s heritage. The Council expects to complete the project in October, and Jack’s widow Pat is looking forward to seeing the finished statue, and to attending the unveiling. Chair of Ashington Town Council, Cllr Mark Purvis said, “The people of Ashington are rightly proud of their footballing heroes and, as a council, we want to develop projects that local people value. Also, we want to encourage investment, and share our stories with visitors. I never get tired of football stories, and hope these will inspire our youngsters, not only to kick a football, but to be their absolute best.” For more information on the Jack Charlton Statue and Ashington’s Football Heritage, please contact Ashington Town Council.

Nick Knowles with the Northumbria Flooring Team
Local Flooring Company Answers The ‘Diy SOS’ Call Again Northumbria Flooring & Furniture, with branches in Blyth and North Shields Royal Quays Outlet Centre, once again took part in the hit BBC TV show DIY SOS, this time on a project in Longframlington. Northumbria Flooring previously donated and fitted all the carpets for an episode of the programme, which aired in 2019, featuring a property in North Shields. The BBC contacted the team once again for their latest project in the area, and they were only too happy to answer the call and help out. This project was to help the Owen family, who have four generations living together, including daughter Bobbie, who has severe disabilities, autism and epilepsy, and her mum and nan, who both live with medical conditions too. Once again, working their magic, the DIY SOS team renovated the home within ten days, making a safe environment for the whole family to live in comfortably. Speaking to the owners of Northumbria Flooring, James & Micheal, they shared their experience of being able to help and support this worthy cause. 10

“It’s been our pleasure and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The process began with meeting the design team from the BBC on a trades day. We spoke with Gaby and the team to identify styles and colours they would like. After measuring up, we went back to them with a donation of a whole house of quality wool carpets, antique brass door bars and underlay. We also fitted an engineered oak flooring throughout the ground floor. “We took 9 of our team to ensure the job was completed in a swift time over two evenings and a Sunday. It is a great feeling to be able to give back to the local community and full credit to our team, who gladly gave up their spare time to help with the project. It was overwhelming to see how many tradespeople turned out, and we were proud to be one of them.” “The whole DIY SOS team, Nick, Chris, Gaby & Jules are so nice to work with, and Billy is just hilarious, constantly making everyone laugh.” The show aired on Tuesday 31st May and is available on BBC I player and catch up. ■ www.northumbriaflooring.co.uk

Northumberland Line Phased Parking Plans Revealed
As work on the Northumberland Line project gathers pace, a phased approach to car parking is now being planned for one of the stations. An application is due to be submitted to Northumberland County Council to allow a phased delivery of car parking spaces at Seaton Delaval station. Although planning permission to build the station was secured in November 2021, the change reflects a recent review of programme delivery at the site, and reflects concerns raised by local residents about the size of the car park. The new plans will see the car park constructed in two phases, in line with the demand forecasting for the site. There are no changes proposed to the number of car parking spaces, only to the timing of the full build out. Specific mechanisms will be put in place for monitoring car park usage to ensure the second phase of the car park is constructed at the right time to
accommodate increasing demand. The phased delivery will mean that the full extent of car parking spaces can be delivered in the longer term (by 2039), based on the emerging pattern of demand at each station. Phasing of the car parks at other stations on the Northumberland Line is also being considered and reviewed. Main construction work on the Northumberland Line is due to get underway this summer. The scheme, which will see six new stations, deliver 18 miles of upgraded track, access improvements and new signal locations, is due to be open by December 2023. It's planned to run a half hourly passenger service between Newcastle and Ashington – stopping at Bedlington, Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval and Northumberland Park along the way. More information on the scheme is available at www. northumberland.gov.uk/line

CBBC and Panto Stars to Host Smile for a Night Family Variety Show The North East’s favourite variety show – hosted by CBBC and panto stars Danny Adams and Clive Webb – is back after a two years delay due to the pandemic. Smile For A Night will take to the stage at new venue for the event – the Playhouse, Whitley Bay, on Sunday September 25th – in aid of children’s charity Smile For Life. All money raised will go towards improving the lives of young people with disabilities and learning difficulties across the North East. On the day Danny and Clive – stars of the hit show Danny & Mick and Newcastle Theatre Royal panto – will take the audience on a tour of local acts including singers, dancers and comedians, as well as performing their own slide-splitting comedy capers. Acts will include comedian Lost Voice Guy, winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2018, and magician Graeme Shaw, who was awarded the British Champion of family entertainment in 2020. And the final performance spot has been opened up to the public, with the charity offering a slot to a new star to showcase their skills. Individuals or groups with a unique talent need to send a video or video link of their act to frankie@ rusbymedia.com by Friday July 1st, with a shortlist of entries then invited to perform in front of a panel of judges before a winner is chosen. Danny, who will be also bringing his Cirque Du Hilarious tour to the North East in summer, said: “It will be fantastic to be back. It’s been years since we have been able to put the variety show on and I’m sure it will be even better than ever. “It will be great to be in this lovely venue, on the beautiful North East coast, bringing together the best of what the region has to offer in aid of this lifechanging charity. 14

“Audiences are so ready for live performances after the last couple of years, and so are we. We appreciate and enjoy being on stage now more than ever.” Danny, who is currently busy with a tour and TV work, added: “We spoke to Lee Ridley, the Lost Voice Guy, and he is also really happy to be taking part. In fact, he was speechless!” Smile For Life, based in Gosforth, provides work placements at its Gosforth-based Café Beam, as well as life changing equipment and experiences, to disabled and disadvantaged youngsters in the North East. Paula Gascoigne, charity CEO, says she is so excited to finally be bringing this show back after having to cancel the 2020 show due to Covid-19. She said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch Smile For A Night which will be bigger and better than ever. “We have some of the biggest stars in the North East taking part, all for a good cause, and we are so grateful to them for giving up their time for us. This promises to be a memorable, incredible show. “For your chance to be part of this special show we have opened up the final performance slot to our amazing local talent, working alongside some fantastic established names like the Lost Voice Guy and Danny Adams. “So, if you have a talent that can wow our judges and an audience of 600 please do get in touch.” For tickets for the show, which is likely to sell out fast, go to: https://www.playhousewhitleybay. co.uk/events/smile-for-a-night-variety-show/ To find out more about the charity head to www.smileforlife.org.uk or search Smile For Life on social media.

Singing Through The Summer
By the time you read this, the summer will be at it’s peak, and hopefully the gents of Ashington & District Male Voice Choir will be at theirs. A successful Annual Concert, incorporating the choir’s own tribute to Her Majesty in the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, was held at Holy Sepulchre Church Ashington, attracting an excellent audience who enjoyed the choir’s own songs, the lovely baritone voice of Richard Grady, and also their own efforts when joining in and waving their Union Jacks in the traditional patriotic songs usually associated with the ‘Last Night of the Proms’. It was great to be back at Holy Sepulchre after a three year absence. The concert was further enhanced thanks to the generosity of the James Knott Trust which kindly gave a grant to help us promote the Jubilee. Thanks must be given to Rev Chris Groocock and his PCC for their support, and also to the Cheese Shop in Morpeth for its assistance. Since this concert, the choir has been working hard on a new program to perform when the gents travel to Beamish Museum on Saturday 9th July. This is again a venture that has been impossible in recent years
and we are looking forward to doing a morning and an afternoon concert in the Pit Village Chapel. There is usually a short break during August and we then look forward to the autumn followed by Christmas. We are a community choir and are pleased to consider performing concerts for voluntary and charitable organisations who are looking to raise funds. There is the opportunity for a couple of concerts during the autumn and would welcome enquiries. The choir also welcomes new members and remember, there are no auditions and previous experience or the ability to read music are not necessary, just an interest and willingness to try. So gents, just contact us or come along to Stakeford & Bomarsund Welfare on a Thursday at 7.00pm. ■ All our details are available on Facebook or www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org

People in Newcastle can now sign up to Walk for Parkinson’s Newcastle, Quayside on Saturday 27 August. The money raised will help fund Parkinson’s UK’s vital work, which aims to transform the lives of people with Parkinson’s and their loved ones. In the UK, there are around 145,000 people already living with Parkinson’s, including an estimated 6,300 in the North East. Broadcaster and journalist Dave Clark is supporting Walk for Parkinson’s. Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 44 and has since helped raise over £350,000 for the charity through walking challenges, including an incredible £43,000 in 2020 when he walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall. He said: “I’ve been living with Parkinson’s for 11 years now. It’s not always been easy, but I’m determined to stay positive and embrace life. Throwing myself into fundraising and awarenessraising about the condition is one of the ways I do that. “Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, so finding a cure really can’t wait. Uniting with thousands of others to take part in Walk for Parkinson’s is a great way to help move us closer to that goal. Raspberry Swiss Roll
Home-made Swiss rolls are so good, and surprisingly easy to make. Prep - 30 mins Cook - 10 to 30 mins Serves - 6 to 8 Ingredients • •
4 free-range eggs 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust ( you can also use icing sugar) ½ tsp vanilla bean paste 75g self-raising flour 200ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 200g whole raspberries For the raspberry jam 150g caster sugar ½ lemon, zest, and juice 350g raspberries
• • • • • • • • •
Method 1.
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 and line a 23x33cm/9x13in Swiss roll tin with greaseproof baking paper. Place the eggs, sugar and vanilla paste into a bowl and whisk together until pale, fluffy, and thickened to the consistency of double cream. Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold it in preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread it

evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until just firm to the touch. Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge and set aside to cool a little. Pour the double cream and vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks. Make the jam – Heat a pan until hot. Add the sugar, lemon zest and juice and cook for 3–4 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3–5 minutes until they break down and thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries. Starting with the longest edge of the sponge and using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar and cut into slices to serve.

Dentures; Another Option for Missing Teeth By Joanne Duggan, Principal Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice Last time we discussed implants to replace missing teeth and, in this article, I am going to explore the option of having a denture. In a study across 19 countries, researchers found an average of 19% of the population wear some form of denture. That’s nearly one in five. I am sure therefore, we all must have a family member or friend who wears a denture and we don’t even realise!
What is a denture?
A denture is a removable appliance, usually made from acrylic, or a combination of acrylic with metal, that is worn snugly in your mouth to restore the spaces left by missing teeth and will restore your smile, give you confidence and improve your ability to eat and chew. They can replace just one tooth, to all of your teeth. If you have lost all of your upper or lower natural teeth then you would need a full denture, (also known as a complete denture). If your denture replaces some but not all of your teeth, then this type of denture is called a partial denture. A complete or full denture replaces your natural teeth and gives support to your cheeks and lips. Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person look older and they will find it harder to eat and speak properly.
How do I know which type of denture I need?
Well, this really depends on many factors, from the shape of your mouth, to the position and health of any remaining natural teeth, to the appearance of the denture (for example ideally you do not want to see any metal showing when you smile), to the strength of the denture. Some patients will find their acrylic
dentures repeatedly fracture so a metal one would be better as the metal component will not break.
Different denture materials
The type of material used in making your denture depends on various factors. For example how many remaining teeth you have, whether your dentures frequently break, or if you have any allergies to any of the materials Dentures are made of either acrylic, (plastic), cobalt chrome metal or valplast. An acrylic (plastic) denture usually solely rests on the gum of your mouth and can be used to make both partial and full dentures. Cobalt chrome can be used to make a full denture to give it strength, or for a partial denture where it is supported and retained by some of your natural teeth. Valplast is a nylon based flexible denture, used for small partial dentures.
Different types of teeth.
Well, you would not believe how many different teeth we have to choose from; with different shapes, sizes, colour and quality, we are able to closely match to your natural teeth so that your appearance hardly changes, or may even be better.
How soon can I have a denture after my teeth are taken out?
Usually dentures can be fitted straight after your teeth have been removed. These are called ‘immediate dentures’. You will need to visit the dental team beforehand for them to take measurements and impressions of your mouth. With immediate dentures you don’t have to be without teeth while your gums are healing. However, bone and gums can shrink over time, especially during the first six months after your teeth have been taken out. If your gums shrink, your immediate dentures may need relining, adjusting or even replacing. Your dental team will be able to talk to you about this. Sometimes your dental team may advise you to wait until your gums are healed before having your dentures, as this can sometimes mean a better fit. Healing may take several months. ABC MAGAZINES

What is involved in making a denture?
Once you have decided to go ahead with a denture, you will need to organise your appointments; they tend to be roughly a week apart to allow time for each stage of the denture to be made. The dentist will also need to organise which dental laboratory and technician they are going to instruct and liaise with to make your denture. An alternative option is for the denture to be made with a Clinical Dental Technician (CDT.) The role of a CDT sits somewhere between that of a dentist, who would normally take your impressions and the other treatment needed to made a denture in the dental surgery, to that of the Dental Technician who would receive the impression from the dentist in the laboratory, and actually make the dentures. A CDT therefore is able to combine both the work in the dental surgery and also hand make a bespoke denture for you from start to finish. At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are very fortunate to have Clare Rankin, our CDT, who has over 23 years experience making dentures and was also mentored by our previous CDT Alan Forrest. Whoever makes your denture, there is an incredible amount of skill and craftsmanship involved. I want to shed some light on the amazing and sometimes unrecognised work that goes on in the dental laboratories in making your denture.
First visit/examination
In the surgery: Your dentist or CDT will perform an examination of your mouth including an oral cancer screen. If you have no teeth at all and wish to have complete upper or lower dentures, then you can see a CDT without seeing a dentist first. However, if you have any natural teeth remaining, then you must be

seen by a dentist first to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy before seeing a CDT. The last thing you need is to have a beautiful private denture made and then treatment on your natural teeth afterwards which can alter the fit or aesthetics of your new denture. The shape of your mouth will determine what type of denture is suitable. A denture will be made to fit your mouth, but this can vary widely between people and affect how stable and secure your denture will be. In particular if you have no teeth, then the ridge and palate shape can have large implications on the retention and stability of your denture. For example a flabby ridge is soft and moveable and is usually caused when you have worn a full upper denture against lower natural teeth for a long time, but this means there is no solid foundation to support your denture and therefore there is a greater chance your denture will move. The shape of your palate is also important; for example if you have a highly vaulted palate, then the denture will be more stable and less likely to move than if your palate is flat. Most people find a complete lower denture more problematic as the shape of gums tend to deteriorate quicker than the upper. Muscle position is another factor for a successful denture. The Dentist/ CDT will use the impression stage to record your facial/tongue muscles. This enables them to place the denture in the correct position. Primary Impressions will be taken to give an outline of the overall shape and muscle position in your mouth. At the lab: From this impression the CDT/technician will make a model which gives them all the information needed to start the process of planning and making a denture. Initially the tray used to take the impression is just a standard size and may not be the best fit for you. A custom made tray, called a special tray, will be made on this initial model so it is the best fit for the shape of your mouth and teeth. If the tray is a good fit, then the impression of your mouth will be more accurate and this in turn will lead to a better fitting denture.
Second visit; secondary impressions
In the surgery: The CDT/dentist will use the special tray custom made to fit

you to take another impression. The material may be slightly different; sometimes silicone is used which accurately records the fine detail of your mouth, especially for complete dentures. At the lab: The technician/CDT will cast the moulds and make a registration block. This is used to record your jaw relationship and tooth position, all of which is important for your new dentures.
Third visit; bite and choosing the colour and shape of your teeth
In the surgery: Your dentist/CDT will take measurements of your current dentures and your natural tooth position as a guide to determine the shape and size of your new dentures. At this stage the clinician will need your input of what you like/don’t like about your current dentures, so we can choose the most aesthetically pleasing shaped teeth for you. We will also want your input into the shade/colour of the teeth. At the lab: The technician/CDT will mount the registration on an articulator, which replicates your jaw and its movements, and make a denture out if wax with the teeth in the correct position.
Fourth visit; try in
In the surgery: At this stage the wax try-in denture becomes a collaboration between you and the clinician. The dentist/CDT will need to ensure your bite is correct, but you will be involved in discussing the appearance. Together we need to ensure we achieve a denture you want to wear but will also provide good function. This may take more than one visit to achieve and we will not progress to the next stage until you are 100% happy with everything. We advise that you bring someone with you, whom you are comfortable with, to provide a second opinion. It is difficult to say “yes” to something when only having a short time to inspect them, especially when you could potentially be wearing them for the next 5-10 years. Anything you do not like or would like to alter should be raised at this stage. Whilst it is in
wax, it CAN be changed. Don’t be afraid to speak up; we wouldn’t expect you to wear a dress or suit we picked out for you if you didn’t like it, so why should your dentures be any different? At the lab: The try-in denture goes through a curing process from wax into your chosen material (such as acrylic) to make the finished denture.
Fifth visit; fit
In the surgery: Your dentist/CDT will fit your dentures and they may need minor adjustments. The fit, stability, occlusion (your bite) and speech will all be checked before you leave. If you are having partials fitted, we will also check you are able to remove and place the dentures correctly. We will also instruct you on how to look after and clean your new dentures.
Review appointment
We always book a review appointment after fitting all dentures. The majority of people will get soreness after having their dentures fitted. Imagine going for a 12 mile hike in a new pair of shoes, it is likely you will get blisters. Your dentures may need adjusted at this stage. It again may take more than one visit to completely eradicate the soreness. A warm salty rinse is recommended when you have ulceration to help the healing process and may take up to 3-4 days to clear after adjustments. If it doesn’t improve after this time, contact us for a second review appointment. If you are considering a denture, it is really important you visit your dentist for your dental health check to ensure your gums and teeth are healthy first. Your professional dental team will then advise you on what treatment options are available to you and the most appropriate to meet your individual need. If you like to arrange an appointment or would like more information about our CDT, then give the practice a call: 01670 828402 Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice, 30 Front Street East, Bedlington, NE22 5AA www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk

Liz Million with local children at the new Bedlington Library and Hub
New Library and Community Hub Launches in Bedlington A joint venture between Northumberland Libraries and Northumberland Communities Together, the new Bedlington Library and Community Hub will complement existing community projects to combine traditional library services, while enhancing the existing activity programmes. The five-month-long project, which was originally proposed by Northumberland County Council’s team of apprentices during National Apprenticeship Week, has seen a complete interior refurbishment of the library space on Glebe Road, which has been serving the community in Bedlington since the 1970s. Much of the work to prepare the space, including painting the library’s interior, was completed by the apprentices themselves with support from the Housing and Local Services team, as well as volunteers from across the library service, Northumberland Communities Together and local youth charity, Leading Link. The finished Library and Community Hub features all the same great library amenities as before, with the addition of more communal seating areas, craft and activity tables and a new, custom-built children’s library area to help make the space somewhere that members of the community of all ages can enjoy. To celebrate the culmination of the work, staff hosted a special event where school children from four local primary schools were invited to take part in a book signing with celebrated children’s book illustrator, Liz Million. 28

Over 100 pupils from St Bede’s, Stead Lane, Whitley Memorial and Bedlington West End Primary Schools came along to the event where they each received a free signed book, a goody bag and learned more about the new and improved service and the upcoming Summer Reading Challenge. Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Healthy Lives at Northumberland County Council, commented: “We’re absolutely delighted with the transformation of Bedlington Library into the new collaborative Library and Community Hub. “The coronavirus pandemic has impacted on everyone’s lives in different ways. People have lost their jobs, lost their confidence and in some areas, lost their sense of community through months of having to stay apart. The launch of a new community hub like this, which brings together the magic of the library with a comprehensive support service has the potential to help thousands of residents of all ages to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the past two years and we’re really excited for the public to see it.” Councillor Wendy Pattison, Cabinet Member for Adult Wellbeing at Northumberland County Council, added: “The services provided by Northumberland Communities Together during the height of the pandemic were a lifeline to many individuals living in our communities and although we are now more than two years on, coronavirus is still impacting on many people’s day-to-day lives. “Through the creation of safe spaces like the new Library and Community Hub at Bedlington, we hope to continue offering these services in a sustainable way and make them more widely accessible to all residents across Northumberland to help people to get back on their feet at their own pace.” The Bedlington Library and Community Hub is open daily to all members of the public. Local Author Adds Sixth Book To His North East Crime Series Be it the foiled bombing of Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, a girl snatched from the Quayside, a body washed up on St. Mary's Lighthouse or the desperate hunt for a drug gangmaster, Colin Youngman is transforming the North-East into an electrifying crime hotspot with his Ryan Jarrod series of Tyneside detective novels. The author first came up with the rough plot for his crime fiction over 20 years ago but shelved the idea after struggling to find the perfect setting. What he didn't know was that inspiration lay at his doorstep. "I had an original story started many moons ago and just couldn't get the setting right. Then, I attended a writer's convention where I bumped into LJ Ross, who is another Northumberland writer who sets her books in the region. I got talking to her and it dawned on me, ‘why don't I try that?’ Colin re-visited his old story, changed some of the locations to places he’d worked, landmarks he was familiar with, and pubs he’d got drunk in, and suddenly he found it all fell into place. The first of his books, The Angel Falls, was published in 2020 and saw the birth of main character Ryan Jarrod. Fast forward two years, having won over readers in the region and further afield, there are now six stories in the series with a seventh in the pipeline – and they have been described as ‘LJ Ross

Give Someone Power Of Attorney… Before It's Too Late Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Help Reduce Energy Costs with Thermos Roof
With most of us facing rising energy bills, why not reduce these costs and save money instantly with a Thermos Roof insulation system in your conservatory. Here they explain more.
Conservatories are a great space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden. They are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually shortlived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons: to increase its insulating performance and enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in winter, heat is sucked out of your room and into the conservatory as soon as you open the door. During the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof, we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use, into a space you can enjoy all year round as the temperature is comfortable and constant. You will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches the rest of your conservatory construction. therefore, no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this, the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is today. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste and less time to install, saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape, transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein the external weather conditions do not dictate its use; it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter

John and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow everyone to make full use of the facilities of the chosen hotel. New Morpeth Leisure Centre on Track for an Energy Efficient Future Work to build a new £21m state-of-theart leisure centre and community hub in Morpeth is still on track for a public opening in early 2023. Contractors Willmott Dixon are in week 67 of a 94-week programme of work on the centre which will incorporate a number of energy saving and energy generating technologies to drive down running costs and the environmental impact. The new leisure centre is expected to run with a 69.7% carbon emission reduction per year, compared to the current Riverside Leisure Centre. High efficiency building materials include high density insulated cladding, high energy-efficient glazing with thermal screening, air source heat pumps which use outside heat to help power the buildings, LED lighting throughout, and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. These will all help to reduce the carbon footprint of the new centre and contribute to the council’s vision of a net zero-carbon economy. The ventilation systems at the leisure centre will also use the latest ‘smart’ technology to increase control and efficiency through the building management system. The roof of the centre will be fitted with PV solar panels to capture energy from the sun. The clean electricity generated will be used to help run the leisure centre’s 40

fans, pumps, lighting and new heat pumps and will dramatically reduce the amount of electricity being drawn from the grid. Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for healthy lives said: “Sports centres incorporate an extensive array of energy intensive facilities including electrical fitness equipment and swimming pools. In addition, there are the day-to-day lighting, heating and ventilation demands of the property, combined with long opening hours. Consequently, the energy consumption and costs of sports and leisure centres can be considerable. “Now more than ever we need to increase energy efficiency and the measures we are putting in place during the construction of this new centre will help to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions and are another step towards the council’s ambitious plans to be carbon net zero by 2030.” Once complete, the new county council funded leisure centre will be home to a six-lane swimming pool with spectator gallery, a learner pool, spa facilities, a four-court sports hall, a new 100 station gym, a dedicated spinning studio, two fitness studios, a cafe area and soft play. It will also incorporate a new community services hub which will see the town’s library move back to its former home on Gas House Lane, a customer service centre and a new adult learning facility with classrooms for STEM learning and catering. Mark Warnes, chief executive of Active Northumberland said: “It’s fantastic to see the great progress that has been made over recent months. It really is going to be a fabulous centre, offering a wide range of first-class sport, recreation and wellbeing opportunities for Morpeth and the surrounding communities.” Local ward councillor David Bawn said: “The new, modern centre will boast a range of energy efficient technologies which will reduce energy bills and keep costs down, putting the centre on a strong financial footing for the future.”

LOCAL NEWS
The Benefits of an Allotment
During World War II, and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket. But, with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge. And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of most consumers. Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own. Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, microorganisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week (9th-14th August) is encouraging gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotment. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil. They are nature’s vital helpers. To take part in the survey visit www.nsalg.org.uk/news-events-campaigns/nationalallotments-week/ Many allotment gardeners will tell you that a spell 42

on the plot nurturing plants and contemplating nature makes them feel calmer and more hopeful and there have been recent studies that have measured this benefit. The physical benefits of regular spells of gardening help plot-holders to keep fit even if they have sedentary jobs, the physical exercise also contributes to their mental well-being. Gardening can also help to maintain good gait and balance in older gardeners and help with cognitive decline. If managed properly, an allotment can produce enough food to supplement a family’s weekly shop, with fresh fruit and vegetables over the year. Allotment gardeners can choose to garden organically and avoid ingesting chemicals that are likely to be present on shop bought fruit and vegetables. In a survey of National Allotment Society members nearly every person said their love of allotment gardening comes from the fresh air, home grown produce, healthy lifestyle and like-minded people this activity offers. As many new plot-holders discover, growing vegetables requires acquiring new knowledge and skills and the satisfaction gained from eating their first home grown tomato or new potato makes them taste even more delicious! Working a plot year- round means that allotment holders experience the seasons, witness the behaviour of birds, insects and other animals and gain an understanding of the eco-system. This appreciation of the natural world also has the potential to inspire more environmentally aware. To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council (see the websites listed below). Price and availability vary and in some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. A GOOD READ THE PERFECT GOLDEN CIRCLE
by Benjamin Myers England, 1989. Over the course of a burning hot summer, two very different men - traumatized Falklands veteran Calvert, and affable, chaotic Redbone - set out nightly in a clapped-out camper van to undertake an extraordinary project. Under cover of darkness, the two men traverse the fields of rural England in secret, forming crop circles in elaborate and mysterious patterns. As the summer wears on, and their designs grow ever more ambitious, the two men find that their work has become a cult international sensation - and that an unlikely and beautiful friendship has taken root as the wheat ripens from green to gold. Moving and exhilarating, tender and slyly witty, The Perfect Golden Circle is a captivating novel about the futility of war, the destruction of the English countryside, class inequality - and the power of beauty to heal trauma and fight power.
ORPHANS OF THE STORM by Celia Imrie
Nice, France, 1911: After three years of marriage, young seamstress Marcela Caretto has finally had enough. Her husband, Michael, an ambitious tailor, has become cruel and controlling and she determines to get a divorce. But while awaiting the judges’ decision on the custody of their two small boys, Michael receives news that changes everything. Meanwhile fun-loving New York socialite Margaret Hays is touring Europe with some friends. Restless, she resolves to head home aboard the most celebrated steamer in the world - RMS Titanic. As the ship sets sail for America, carrying two infants bearing false names, the paths of Marcela, Michael and Margaret cross - and nothing will ever be the same again. From the Sunday Times-bestselling author, Celia Imrie, Orphans of the Storm dives into the waters of the past to unearth a sweeping, epic tale of the sinking of the Titanic that radiates with humanity and hums with life.

A SLOW BURNING FIRE by Paula Hawkins
Laura has spent most of her life being judged. She’s seen as hot-tempered, troubled, a loner. Some even call her dangerous. Miriam knows that just because Laura is witnessed leaving the scene of a horrific murder with blood on her clothes, that doesn’t mean she’s a killer. Bitter experience has taught her how easy it is to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Carla is reeling from the brutal murder of her nephew. She trusts no one: good people are capable of terrible deeds. But how far will she go to find peace? Innocent or guilty, everyone is damaged. Some are damaged enough to kill.
THE LAMPLIGHTERS by Emma Stonex Cornwall, 1972. Three keepers vanish from a remote lighthouse, miles from the shore. The entrance door is locked from the inside. The clocks have stopped. The Principal Keeper’s weather log describes a mighty storm, but the skies have been clear all week. What happened to those three men, out on the tower? The heavy sea whispers their names. The tide shifts beneath the swell, drowning ghosts. Can their secrets ever be recovered from the waves? Twenty years later, the women they left behind are still struggling to move on. Helen, Jenny and Michelle should have been united by the tragedy, but instead it drove them apart. And then a writer approaches them. He wants to give them a chance to tell their side of the story. But only in confronting their darkest fears can the truth begin to surface . . . Inspired by real events, The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex is an intoxicating and suspenseful mystery, an unforgettable story of love and grief that explores the way our fears blur the line between the real and the imagined.
