SAMMY IS 20!

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FOR SUNDAY FOR SAMMY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWS ON 23RD FEBRUARY 2020 AT NEWCASTLE UTILITA ARENA

SUPER SUNDAY: The shows return to the arena in 2020 with a host of stars

F

ollowing the astonishing success of the 2018 sell-out, Sunday for Sammy returns to the Newcastle Utilita Arena for two spectacular 20th Anniversary shows. The concerts, locally dubbed The Geordie Command Performance, are held every two years in memory of Geordie actor Sammy Johnson who died suddenly in 1999. The 2018 shows, the first to be held at the Arena, were hailed as the best ever by fans who travelled from all over the North East and beyond to be part of the fun. Sunday for Sammy, which was staged at Newcastle City Hall for 16 years, has become one of the ‘must-see’ events in the regional entertainment calendar. Over 10,000 fans flocked to Newcastle Arena for the 2018 show and the organisers are expecting another speedy sell-out in 2020. Tim Healy, Denise Welch, Mark Knopfler, Kevin Whately, Charlie Hardwick, Jimmy Nail, Jill Halfpenny, Jason Cook, Timothy Spall, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Christopher Fairbank, Mattie Healy, Stephen Tomkinson, John Miles, Angie Lonsdale,

Joe McElderry, Brendan Healy, Donna Aire, Ant and Dec, Chelsea Halfpenny, Billy Mitchell, Brendan Foster, Pam Royle, Bob Moncur, Julia Tobin and many, many more have previously given up their time to take part in the show. The cast list is never revealed beforehand and every show is packed with surprises. None bigger than the reception given to actress Brenda Blethyn who brought the house down with her appearance as Vera in the 2018 show. The award-winning actress said: ‘Never in my entire career has an audience welcomed my appearance on stage as wildly and enthusiastically as the audience for Sunday For Sammy welcomed VERA. It was deafening and I’ll cherish the memory of it for ever. The warmth and enthusiasm for the entire show was overwhelming. Thank you. I’m so happy and honoured to have taken part.’ Chairman of the Sunday for Sammy Trust, Tim Healy commented: “It’s hard to believe that it will be twenty years since the first Sunday for Sammy. The show has become a part of our lives and also part of North East Culture. It makes me so proud to know that an idea that Jimmy Nail and I dreamed up to maintain the memory of our pal Sammy has so far raised over £530K to support young performers and creatives in the North East.” Show producer Ray Laidlaw added: “The Newcastle Utilita Arena is now the natural home for Sunday for Sammy. The 2018 show was a huge hit with both the audience and the performers. The success of the 2018 concert DVD, which reached No 3 in the UK charts, has helped to spread the word even further. We’re looking forward to another spectacular event. Every year, the tickets sell faster so I’d urge fans not to leave it till the last minute to guarantee your part in the 20th anniversary shows.” Tickets are on-sale from the Utilita Arena and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. DRESS YOUR AREA TO IMPRESS FOR THE TOUR OF BRITAIN

T

he Tour of Britain organisers are urging community groups, schools, businesses and land owners to show their support for the race by creating bigger than life works of art in open spaces across the North of Tyne area.

Following the success of the inaugural contest, the Tour of Britain National Land Art Competition will return for the 2019 race, which takes place across North of Tyne as stage three on Monday 9 September. Anyone can also get involved by dressing their streets and shop windows with colourful bunting, flags, floral or cycling displays. The 114-mile stage starts in Berwick, passing through Northumberland and onto the North Tyneside coast, and into Wallsend, before continuing to Newcastle city centre, with a spectacular finish on Grey Street. In 2017 the Tour of Britain swept through Northumberland creating a wave of excitement as some of the world’s top cyclists cycled through our

communities. Residents and businesses colourfully dressed the route with bikes and bunting, and thousands of spectators lined the route to cheer on the riders and give them a fantastic welcome. Organisers hope that scores of local communities across the North of Tyne area will be just as involved this year. The tour passes right through Morpeth, Bedlington and Cramlington, as well as a host of local villages. As well as the chance to be crowned winner of the national competition, those that take part could be featured on TV, with the race itself aired to 166 countries worldwide. Peter Jackson, Leader of Northumberland County Council added: “We want everyone to have a fantastic time when the Tour of Britain arrives on our patch, and make it really memorable. Communities completely got behind the Tour in 2017 and did Northumberland proud by decking the route in the famous red and yellow colours. So let’s make it bigger and better for 2019, and show the world what makes us special.” North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll said: “We’ve seen from other events like the Tour de France and Yorkshire what a spectacle these races can be when communities get involved, and we want to create that same kind of buzz in our region. The Tour of Britain will be broadcast nationally and internationally – this is great chance for the world to see what a beautiful area we live in.”

Here are some ideas to show your creative side:

• • • •

Hang bunting or get together with others along your street Decorate bikes in all sorts of colours and decoration Create bike related floral displays along the route Dressed businesses will become easily recognisable as cycle friendly businesses so dress your windows and frontages Or come up with an ingenious idea to make your business stand out amongst the crowds

ITV4 plan to screen live free-to-air coverage of each stage, along with a nightly highlights programme of the best of the action, which will be available to 166 countries around the world. The eight-stage race runs from 7 to 14 September – full route details can be found at: www.northoftyne-tob.co.uk

If you have a great idea for a piece of artwork that would really showcase pride in your area and support for the Tour of Britain as it comes your area, register your interest before 21 August 2019 at: www.northoftyne-tob.co.uk/copy-of-schools-information

NEW CINEMA AND RETAIL COMPLEX FOR ASHINGTON TOWN CENTRE

P

lans for the redevelopment of Portland Park Ashington have taken a major step forward, with Advance Northumberland signing a deal with national cinema operator Reel Cinema for a new multi-screen cinema and restaurant complex.

Working on behalf of Northumberland County Council, Advance Northumberland has secured a significant commitment from Reel who are delighted to be part of an exciting cinema led development that will transform Ashington town centre. In April Northumberland County Council’s Cabinet approved a £4.6m loan and a £3m grant to create a cinema, restaurants and bring new shops into Portland Park. This funding, including a capital contribution of £1m by Advance Northumberland, will be used to develop a 17,000 square foot, seven screen cinema and restaurant space to complement the existing leisure facilities. Terms are also being finalised with a major retailer to deliver a 20,000 square foot retail store with over 100 car parking spaces. A range of smaller shops will also be developed by Advance Northumberland to encourage both national and local traders and provide a gateway into the more established retail offer on Station Road. Advance Northumberland has been working closely with the Ashington Project Co-ordination Group, the town forum comprising Town and County Councillors on this major development. Reel Cinemas is a nationwide cinema operator with 14

cinemas across the UK and remains a true local, family owned, independent cinema operator. Reel Cinemas is proud to be one of the largest independent cinema exhibitors in the UK, and have exciting plans to grow organically over the next five years, with at least 10 new cinemas opening in selected locations nationwide, including the new cinema in Ashington. A pre planning submission public consultation will take place on Wednesday 17th July from 11am-6pm at Ashington Leisure Centre. The planning application is targeted to be submitted late summer 2019. The consultation material will be made available on-line, with the public also having the opportunity to provide comment electronically should they not be available to attend the sessions. Ken Dunbar, Managing Director of Advance Northumberland, said: “It’s immensely satisfying for everyone in Advance Northumberland who are involved in bringing this fantastic new mixed development and cinema attraction to Ashington, thereby building on the huge success of Ashington Leisure Centre and supporting the ongoing regeneration of the town centre. “Ashington is a great town and a great place to invest. It has significant potential and we are delighted to be delivering the further development of Portland Park. We have signed the deal on a seven screen major cinema development – one that would draw people from across the county. And with a cinema you also attract and support a wide range of leisure offers that will really complement the highly successful leisure centre”.

BRING YOUR POLAROID CAMERA BACK TO LIFE

D

o you have an old Polaroid camera languishing in a cupboard? Now is the perfect time to bring it back to life.

Polaroid Originals is the company that rose from the ashes of the discontinuation of Polaroid instant film in 2008 and is dedicated to analogue instant photography in the original, iconic format. Back then, a number of chemical suppliers that existed solely to provide Polaroid with chemistry for film production went out of business. And over the course of the last decade some of the chemistry used in film production became unavailable for commercial use. Polaroid Originals faced the challenge of reinventing analogue instant photography with the chemistry available, and over the past nine years has been gradually improving the processing and quality of instant film. Launched on September 13th, 2017, the 80th anniversary of the founding of Polaroid, Polaroid Originals makes instant film for Polaroid cameras, and refurbishes vintage cameras so they’re good as new. If you don’t own a vintage Polaroid camera new cameras are available. The OneStep 2 is

18

a new Polaroid camera that blends classic design with contemporary style. It’s inspired by Polaroid’s original OneStep, but updated to create a simple, easy-to-use instant camera that works straight out of the box – just pick up some i-Type instant film and you’re good to go. It’s got a high quality lens and a powerful flash to give you great photos every time, and this newly improved Viewfinder model makes framing your photos even more intuitive than before. Plus with its long-lasting rechargeable battery, you’ll always be ready to shoot, whether you’re on a brief excursion or a journey round the world. Now is the time to reacquaint yourself with instant analogue photography in an increasingly digital world. Photographic retailer, FotoSnaps are your local stockist for Polaroid Originals products. The Wallsend retailer offers a range of colour and black and white film for your vintage Polaroid camera, and they also have the new Polaroid OneStep 2 instant cameras available if you’re interested in starting a new hobby! DEALING WITH BUMPS IN THE ROAD

Sarah Howe, Director of 3 Curves fitness facility’s in the North East and a mother of two, advises how to stop beating yourself up when you slip up.

Y

ou’re at a friend’s house and, without thinking, you grab a dessert and eat it. Next you’re mindlessly eating crisps. In the minutes that follow, panic and guilt sets in – you’ve been working hard to follow a healthy eating plan, but now you’re fearful you’ll fall back into old habits. Does this situation sound familiar to you? At some point on your journey, you may experience a bump in the road, or slip-up. No one is perfect, so these bumps are perfectly normal. Learning to deal with the bump in a positive way is essential for long term success. Don’t beat yourself up when you slip, instead, consider it a learning experience. Here are some tools to help you navigate bumps in the road in a more positive way. Following these steps will help you learn from the past and handle bumps more effectively in the future. 1. Recognize the Bump - The bump in the road usually starts with a thought, place, feeling or action – the scale, stress at work or home, negative thoughts, office party, social gathering, holiday or vacation. Identifying some of your weaknesses is a strength because you can develop strategies to overcome these bumps in the road. 2. Pause & Examine - Take some time to talk or journal about how you are feeling, any negative thoughts you have or what’s going on in your life right now. You may need to phone a friend or connect with other women at Curves in club or online through the message boards. The Curves Community is full of women just like you. You’re not alone! When you share what you are experiencing, it strengthens your resolve. 3. Accept - Acceptance is more than just accepting that you had a moment of weakness. It’s about accepting that you’re not perfect. We don’t expect others to be perfect, so why do we expect something more from ourselves? It takes time to change behaviours. So, while 20

you may not get it right the first time, you’ll be stronger and more prepared to face a similar situation or experience in the future. Be patient, you are making great strides in improving your health. 4. Experience your feelings - Throughout this journey, it’s important you learn to experience your feelings in a healthy, positive way. Ignoring your feelings will only lead to internal turmoil and discontent. In fact, you may turn to food as a way of dealing with your emotions. Take some time to explore and understand your feelings. And realize that your feelings will pass – it may take a couple hours or a couple days, but your feelings will pass. 5. Forgiveness - Now it’s time to forgive yourself. It’s important that you place any feelings of shame or guilt in a journal or in the heart of a loving friend. Decide that you won’t let any bump in the road discourage your progress. This journey is about learning more about yourself. Consider this experience as an opportunity to shape you into a healthier, happier version of you. Once you’ve forgiven yourself, you can move on in your journey. When it comes to dealing with bumps in the road, you’ll often be faced with two decisions: one, you can choose to let your slip affect your progress, or two, you can learn more about yourself and move on in your journey. In the words of Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood….I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” There are going to be bumps in the road throughout your journey, but tomorrow is a new day, a new opportunity – a road less travelled by. In the past, you may have felt defeated by bumps in the road and often took the well-beaten path. Why not try a road less travelled and join your local Curves Club, we can help you through your health and fitness journey. Your perseverance through change will help you become stronger both mentally and physically. For more information on Curves Fitness visit www.curves.eu/uk

SUGAR & YOUR TEETH JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, EXPLAINS THE REAL IMPACT OF INDULGING IN SUGAR

W

hat we eat and drink is really important for our general health but also the health of our teeth. Sugar in particular will rot or decay teeth.

You know when you have a packet of sweets that they are bad for your teeth, however with clever marketing there are also a host of other food and drinks that contain sugar without you realising; for example an advert can display a product as low fat, or to be a healthy option due to added vitamins and minerals, or no added sugar, when in fact they contain a lot of sugar. I find this very frustrating as a dentist as many people are caught out by eating hidden sugars and are not aware of the damaging potential on their health. The main message is to reduce both the amount and frequency of foods and drinks that contain free sugars. Free sugars are those added to foods and drinks as well as sugars naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices. It does not include sugars found naturally in whole fresh fruit and vegetables or those naturally present in milk and milk products. Most free sugars in the diet are contained in processed and manufactured foods and drinks. When we cook our own food at home we know exactly what ingredients we have added, but many processed and manufactured foods have sugar added, therefore be sure to check the label for the sugar content.

BUT, WHAT IS DENTAL DECAY AND HOW IS SUGAR INVOLVED?

Dental decay is the same as dental caries, and happens when bacteria in the plaque on our teeth react with sugars from food and drink to create acid which softens the enamel and dentine. This softening of the teeth will eventually lead to a hole or cavity which could cause you pain, and the need for dental treatment.

REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF SUGAR DURING THE DAY

When you have something sugary, your teeth are attacked by the acid produced. When you have finished 24

eating or drinking, your teeth recover from this acid attack after about an hour; they will remineralise (harden again). Saliva in your mouth helps to neutralise the acid, (which also happens more quickly if there is fluoride which is found in toothpastes or fluoride mouthwash.) The safest time to have anything containing sugar is with a meal. Eating and drinking sugar at meal times only is the best as your teeth are attacked on fewer occasions. Saliva production is also stimulated at mealtimes which has the added benefit of neutralising any damaging acid. Having sugary snacks and drinks in between meals can increase the risk of decay, because your teeth come under repeated attacks and do not have time to recover; the time between attacks is not long enough for the tooth to recover properly and harden, so the tooth becomes permanently damaged. It is therefore important not to keep having sugary snacks or sipping sugary drinks throughout the day. When sugar intake is restricted to meal times there is the opportunity and time for our teeth to recover and harden before the next attack of sugar and acid. If you need to have a snack in between meals then some alternative suggestions are whole fruit and vegetables, bread sticks, plain rice cakes, nuts, toast with butter/ margarine, and to drink plain water, milk or tea/coffee with no sugar in.

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING SUGARY AN HOUR BEFORE BED

It is very important not to have anything sweet to eat or drink within an hour before bed. Even if we brush our teeth before bed there may still be harmful sugars left on our teeth. As our mouths dry up when we are asleep at night there is less saliva to protect our teeth. Never take a sugary drink to bed, only sip water during the night as the damage from any sugary drink will be much worse in a dry mouth at night.

NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION: “FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.”

I used to like to explain to patients the theory of Newton’s third law of motion sort of applied to eating and drinking sweet food and the damage it caused to teeth. This is because for every lovely chocolate bar or sweet thing you ate or drank (nice enjoyable action), then there is an equal and opposite horrible reaction to your teeth: caries, that could cause pain and require dental treatment. However with further thought this is not the case! In fact the opposite reaction to sugar is not at all equal to our enjoyment of it, but is far, far worse (yes of course the law of motion does not apply to our teeth and diet but this explanation makes sense to my science influenced brain!) In fact for every sweet food or beverage we consume, and I may add enjoy, the damaging effect on our dental health and general health far outweighs the momentary enjoyment. The detrimental effects of sustained excessive sugar intake not only include rotting our teeth, but also other health problems such as weight gain and obesity which can lead to increasing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The scales are tipped heavily towards the damaging long lasting impact of sugar outweighing the brief enjoyment of taste. So, we all need to think about reducing the amount of sugar we consume and make healthier choices. I am not saying don’t eat sugar at all; as a dentist I too like chocolate and cake, but I always consume in moderation, as part of a balanced diet, and only at mealtimes. To limit damage to our teeth, science has proven the safest time to eat or drink something sweet is with a meal. Ultimately none of us want to have holes in our teeth, and we definitely don’t want any dental treatment, so reducing our sugar intake and preventing dental decay should be everyone’s goal.

TOO SCARED TO GO TO THE DENTIST? Are you a nervous wreck when you have to go? Do you hate the sound, sight and smell of going to the dentist? Well, you are certainly not alone!

F

rom an adult dental survey1 just over a third of adults whom have ever been to the dentist have moderate anxiety, and a further 12% have an extreme dental anxiety.

This survey did not even include those of you that have never been to the dentist! It is not a surprise that being scared of the dentist is a huge barrier for some of you seeking dental care. However, not going to the dentist can have a huge impact on your oral health. Dental anxiety has been linked to feelings of low self esteem and found to have an effect on performance at work. It can also affect existing relationships as well as meeting new people2.

DO YOU WANT TO RECEIVE DENTAL CARE BUT FEEL TOO SCARED? We can help you. At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice, our experienced team are used to helping frightened patients embark on their dental journey. You should never feel embarrassed about your dental fear or the state of your teeth: we absolutely understand and will never judge anyone who has the courage to reach out for dental help. We have learned to listen to our nervous patients and understand their concerns. We take it slowly until you are ready to accept dental treatment.

"But I'm too scared and just want to be knocked out."

You will not be fully knocked out or put to sleep, (a general anaesthetic) in a dental practice, however conscious sedation is a good alternative. The sedation team at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice is lead by Joanne Duggan, the principal dentist, and Katie Lawrence whom both have an additional qualification, a postgraduate diploma in conscious sedation in dentistry from Newcastle University. Joanne and Katie are supported by dental nurses Ally, Lisa and Naomi whom have all passed the national examination in nursing in conscious sedation. REFERENCES 1. Adult Dental Health Survey 2009. 26

There are two types of conscious sedation offered at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice; inhalational or intravenous sedation. Inhalational sedation involves breathing oxygen and nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas or happy air) through a small mask just on your nose. You breathe the happy air in and out through your nose and it makes you feel more relaxed, calm and able to cope with the dental treatment. At the end of treatment you simply breathe the happy air out and you feel fully recovered after about 10 minutes. Intravenous sedation involves an injection either in the back of your hand or arm with a drug called midazolam. Generally midazolam creates a slightly greater level of sedation than nitrous oxide. It may also make you forget what has happened during the first part of your sedation appointment. The drug is in your system much longer than with happy air and therefore you need someone to look after you, and are not allowed to drive or go to work until the affects have worn off after 24 hours. If you are scared of the dentist but know you need some dental help, then go on. You can do it. Pick up the phone! Contact us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402 to arrange a chat. The longer you delay, the harder it becomes. Find us at 30 Front Street East, Bedlington, NE22 5AA or visit www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk.

CHALLENGERS, ARE YOU READY? WALLTOWN WARRIOR IS COMING TO NORTHUMBERLAND NATIONAL PARK!

T

his September, prepare to run, crawl, scramble and slide as the first-ever ‘Walltown Warrior’ event descends on Northumberland!

A brand-new challenge designed to encourage warriors of all ages to get active and have fun in the stunning surrounds of Northumberland National Park, Walltown Warrior is the brainchild of Northumberland National Park Authority, delivered in partnership with Challenge Northumberland. Covering a 3km open course around Walltown Country Park, warriors will encounter obstacles including scramble nets, ninja steps, rope climbs, hay bale towers and even a water slide as they make their way towards the finish line. At the highest point of the course, you can even take a minute to admire the stunning views over the landscape across to Cumbria and the Scottish Borders from the top of an 8 ft climbing frame! The event, which takes place across the weekend of 14-15th September is suitable for all fitness levels from complete beginners to serious athletes. There is no time limit to complete the course, so everyone can go at their own pace to support their team and soak in the atmosphere against the dramatic backdrop of Hadrian’s Wall. “We’re really excited about the launch of our Walltown Warrior challenge event,” said Mandy Roberts, engagement officer at Northumberland National Park Authority. The wide-open spaces and dramatic landscape of our National Park lends itself really well to fun activities 28

which encourage visitors to go and explore either on foot, by bike or on horseback. “With help from Challenge Northumberland, we have created a family-orientated, enjoyable event which will encourage visitors of all ages to get stuck in and experience our National Park in a whole new way!” Neville Duncan, director at Challenge Northumberland, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Northumberland National Park Authority for the first ever Walltown Warrior. We have been working really closely with the Park staff to carefully plan the course around Walltown Country Park, making use of the gradient of the landscape to add to the fun of the challenge. We’re really looking forward to the event and hope that this will be the first of many in the years to come.” Walltown Warrior is the crowning jewel in Northumberland National Park’s newly redeveloped activity programme which also includes guided walks, archery sessions and archaeology expeditions taking place across the summer. With only a limited number of spaces available on each wave across the two days, booking in advance is essential to avoid disappointment. Standard adult entry costs £16 and children aged six and over cost £8. All participants will receive a special Walltown Warrior goody bag and free entry into the Roman Army Museum at Vindolanda. Perfect for a family fun day out or for team building with a group of friends or colleagues, find out more about Walltown Warrior and reserve your place today at: www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/walltownwarrior

BAMBURGH CASTLE RAISES GLASS TO 125TH ANNIVERSARY

O

ne of Britain’s most iconic castles is toasting a special birthday in style with the launch of two anniversary beers dedicated to the remarkable Victorian philanthropist who helped save it from ruin. The special brews are dedicated to North East hero Lord Armstrong, who 125 years ago put both his fortune and foresight to good use when he bought Bamburgh Castle in north Northumberland, transforming it from a run-down shell into the breath-taking and beautifully restored stronghold it is today. Lord Armstrong Amber and Bebbanburg Gold are a collaboration between Alnwick Brewery and the descendants of the 19thcentury Tyneside-born industrialist, scientist, inventor and benefactor, who bought the crumbling fortification in 1894 for the princely sum of £60,000 (£7.6m in today’s money). It is hoped locals and visitors alike will get a taste for the bottled beers, and join in a summer of anniversary celebrations by raising a glass to the man whose generosity saved for the nation the one-time royal capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria. William Watson-Armstrong – the fifth generation of the family to own Bamburgh Castle – says the beers were an opportunity to do something different to mark what is a milestone year. “The two beers are a very special and unique way for people to toast the important part the first Lord Armstrong played in the history, both past and present, of a place that regularly tops the polls as one of the UK’s most recognisable and best-loved castles,” he explains. “Lord Armstrong started out his working life as a lawyer before going on to become one of the Victorian age’s greatest entrepreneurs, whose firms employed 35,000 people across Tyneside. He built up a vast fortune, but was renowned for his acts of generosity. “But for his intervention, Bamburgh Castle may well have been a lost cause. Instead, Lord Armstrong’s legacy has been to leave us a spectacular and powerful reminder of the important part this corner of Britain

played in the nation’s history over many centuries. Given that Lord Armstrong was a man of the people who came from humble beginnings, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate his 125-year association with Bamburgh than by raising a glass or two of beer brewed in his name. I am sure he would think it a fitting tribute.” William worked closely with Alnwick Brewery’s head brewer Phil Bell to develop the two beverages with their striking labels. Lord Armstrong Amber depicts a painting of the man himself set against an arresting blue background. The Bebbanburg Gold uses the classic image of Bamburgh Castle perched atop its rocky outcrop overlooking a wide expanse of dune-fringed sands, with the scene dramatically overlaid in attention-grabbing pink. The beer itself (Bebbanburg was Bamburgh’s Saxon name) is made with First Gold hops, giving a refreshing flavour and aroma, and full-bodied Maris Otter Malt with its hint of honey in the finish. It has an ABV of 4.2%. Meanwhile, Lord Armstrong Amber (3.8% ABV) is a dry hoppy beer, with a refreshing citrus aftertaste. Both beers are being sold in the Bamburgh Castle gift shop at £2.95 a bottle, and are also available in the Clock Tower Café and for weddings and private functions. It is hoped local pubs will also stock them. Jannick Genouw, Alnwick Brewery’s sales executive, says it has been a privilege to work on the beers. The launch of the beers is just one of many Lord Armstrong focussed 125th anniversary events planned for the coming months. They include the chance to meet the first Lord Armstrong in person as he wanders around the castle talking about his restoration plans; special Lego workshops offering children the chance to create and build their own engineering-inspired inventions; and informative talks. These will run alongside a host of summer holiday activities including medieval archery, live music, pony cart rides, foraging, film screenings under the stars, and woodcraft workshops.

BLOW YOUR OWN HORN! DO YOU FANCY HAVING A GO AT PLAYING A BRASS INSTRUMENT? BEDLINGTON COMMUNITY BRASS BAND WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Bedlington Community Brass Band at the Ashington Miners’ Picnic, June 2019

B

rass bands have been, and remain a huge part of community life in our area, from the time when the landscape was dotted with coal mines. You can follow the history at Woodhorn Museum, with its amazing display of miners’ banners, and Durham Miners’ Gala fills the streets of the city each year with brilliant bands; but Bedlington hasn’t had its own band for many years … that is until five years ago. Music Partnership North (MPN), the music development organisation for young people in our region, gained funding from Youth Music to start a big brass playing project in Bedlington’s schools. Whole classes were able to try out and learn brass instruments, with schools forming ‘minibands’ and special projects to bring the players together each year at the Miners’ Picnic in Ashington. Brilliant! But what happens when the children get really hooked? What

happens when they want more, but they’re not good enough to join one of the local competition bands? That’s where, for us adults, the genius of the project kicks in. A key part of it was to begin a Community Brass Band in Bedlington, and five years ago Bedlington Community Brass Band was formed. It’s a Brass Band, but not as we used to know them, because absolutely anyone can join. And they do. Chris has played brass instruments all his life, but his wife hadn’t – he dragged her along three days after she’d first blown into a trombone to see what would happen – she was made welcome and is still blowing! Band members include children who’ve been part of the Schools’ Brass Project, parents who’ve been inspired by their children, people who used to play long, long ago and fancied picking it up again and players new to brass and even new to music. Members comment that

NAME THAT TUNE! At the Ashington Miners’ Picnic, June 2018

one of the best things about the band is the friendliness, the people, and the fact that all generations come together in it. Sometimes the grown-ups wish the young ones were a bit less chatty, and sometimes the young ones wish break times at band practice were longer, but everyone agrees that getting along together and making music together is fantastic. With professional support from our tutors and lots of help and encouragement from band members old and young, new members are really made welcome and have fun. The great thing about a band is that if you make a mistake, no one minds, and there are usually plenty of other players to cover it up! So far it’s been an exciting ride. We’ve made friends with other bands and performed with them in churches and community venues; we’ve helped out at fundraisers and community events. A big highlight has been playing each year at the Miners’ Picnic alongside competition bands and the minibands, in sunshine and in rain (remember those ponchos, everyone?). We’ve played music specially written for us. We’ve played with international star brass ensembles and we’ve even played Hall One at the Sage. We play all kinds of music from traditional hymns and marches to pop music and movie tunes, and all the band members have noticed how much we’ve improved over the years – but we still welcome all newcomers, whatever their playing level! From the beginning, the band has been funded through amazing support from MPN, who have raised funds from Youth Music. But we always knew this could not go on for ever. So band members formed a Trust to look after the community band part of the project and to give us the chance to build a band for the long-term future. We still have very close links with MPN; our conductor

and tutor are MPN people and MPN sends members from minibands and the ‘trainer band’ to us when they are ready; but we have also been able to secure support from local businesses and West Bedlington Town Council to help with band expenses: room hire, tutors, music, instruments, insurance and our (‘very cool’, according to band members) uniforms. Without that kind of support, we couldn’t survive and we couldn’t remain open to all. For the future, our band wants to play the best part we can in our local community. We love to be involved in local events and with local life; we’ve recently been invited into a care home and we are excited to see what memories and enjoyment we will spark with the residents. Music is woven into our lives in so many ways, and the more we do, the more fun life is! So, for our future, we need two things: we need supporters who can help fund the band or join our lovely committee who do the behind the scenes work to run the band; and we need players. We are really keen to grow the band and to welcome anyone who used to play or who fancies having a go. We can provide instruments and help with learning, and the band subs are low because we want to be accessible to all. We rehearse on Tuesdays in termtime (but not every single week – check our facebook page for details) from 7-8.30 at Bedlington Community Centre. If you think that might be you, find us on facebook (Bedlington Brass Family) and leave a message, or come along and see us - and give us a try. We need you!

PLAYERS WANTED! Fancy giving it a go? If you’ve previously played an instrument or want to give it a try, visit Bedlington Brass on Facebook for more information. Rehearsals are Tuesdays 7pm 8.30pm at Bedlington Community Centre in Term Time but check Facebook for details.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 36

hen it comes to back pain so, many claims are made on what works and what doesn’t. It is very difficult for any healthcare professional let alone a patient to be truly confident that there are adopting an evidence-based approach given the lack of consistency in the evidence.

Research does support including core strength into a rehabilitation programmes however, current literature is somewhat lacking clarity on any definitive pathway or programme. Reviewing the latest research on whether the benefits of core stability exercises over general exercise was better in reducing pain and back mobility. In the short term yes, but there was no difference in the longterm benefits between these two groups of exercise approaches Most rehabilitation programmes for back pain incorporates what is called low-load motor control exercise which targets the stabilizing muscles of the stomach and back. These are the exercises that are about engaging your stomach and core muscles which many people would have come across before such as planks, crunches and such like. Another popular exercise type is Pilates which is often the go to exercises for core strength. Studies have shown Pilates to have significant improvement in reducing back pain. However, no solid evidence has suggested Pilates to be superior over other forms of exercise. In recent years high loading exercise such as deadlifts, squats, clean and jerk and kettlebell swings

have become popular in maximizing power and strength in the back and reducing back pain. Deadlift’s has high activation of the stabilizing muscles more so, than Swiss ball exercises often used in gym training classes. With the angular movement of several joints occurring in the back during the deadlift a large majority of the body muscle such as back extensors and trunk muscles are put under stress helping to improve strength and power. So, which exercises are best for chronic back pain high-load (deadlifts) or low-load (activation exercises) or perhaps Pilates? Surprisingly all are similar in their benefits in today’s current research. There are certain studies that show one type more favourable over the other however, in general both low-level and high-level and Pilates achieve similar outcomes. It can all be very confusing, what is apparent is the need to adopt a sensible approach in core stability rehabilitation. The evidence for core strength is patchy at least, although good core strength is important to reduce injury and help back pain Here in clinic, we don’t get too fixed on having patients doing planks etc, despite it being fashionable. Often there is a misplaced belief that core stability strength is the silver bullet of back pain, yet evidence doesn’t support this as robustly as one may think it is still debatable. At the MSK healthcare clinic we use various rehab programmes for back pain that is bespoke to the person. Core exercise is good but general exercise is often shown to be on par. It’s striking the balance and finding what works for the individual and most importantly what is sustainable in the long term the individual.
