Rebrand for Rejuvenated Retail Centre A Tyneside retail outlet centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary by embracing change and catering for a new generation of shoppers and leisure seekers. Royal Quays Outlet Centre in North Shields has rebranded to recognise the many small independent businesses that have moved into the centre. Now known as the Royal Quays Independent and Outlet Centre, centre manager Matt Dawson is confident that the change will encourage more retailers and a new cohort of customers looking for a fresh shopping and leisure experience. Since taking over management of the centre at the height of COVID, Matt has had to cope with forced shop closures, lower than average footfall, competition from online sales and a decline in the popularity of brandbased stores. The situation reached a critical point in October 2020 when there were 17 empty units in the centre but with careful market research, planning and thinking outside of the box, Matt has reduced this to just four empty units and footfall has risen considerably. 6

“Retail has been battered in the past year and we have anticipated, embraced, and supported the many new businesses here. We're not going to see large brands expand soon and it's not easy to just pull in any large store especially as online sales have decimated many high street household names, “said Matt. “We've rebranded because the expectations of people when they see Royal Quays Outlet is that it’s just an Outlet with lots of designer brands at outlet prices. We want to highlight the changes we’ve made and lead the way in showing our support to the many businesses we have here, both outlet and independent. Our hybrid model is constantly adapting, and we are proud of what we have done to make the retail future bright again.” Indeed, many new, local independent businesses have moved into the centre including Garden World, Hauticulture and Quay Furniture. Steven Ward from
Hauticulture is one of the business owners who have moved into Royal Quays Outlet and Independent Centre. “We welcome the change of name at Royal Quays as we feel it better reflects the new and exciting direction Matt is taking the centre. Customers continually tell us how positive the atmosphere is now and how much of an improvement it is to see so many small local independents within the centre, offering something different that you just can’t get elsewhere.” With additional transport links created and a new vibrant feel to the centre, Matt is optimistic that Royal Quays is gearing up to face the next 25 years with confidence and a new vision for what the next generation of shopper expects. “We are already seeing a huge difference in the centre and things are moving at a lot faster pace than even I had planned. We have embraced fantastic local independents who have integrated with our established branded outlet stores and added unique leisure and hospitality to compliment them to create a visitor destination rather than just a visit to the shops, “said Matt.

The awards were held at the end of November, and gave the established local salon the recognition its customers have long felt it deserved. Here are some words from Kirsha herself, explaining a little more about the award, the salon and thanking all her customers for helping to make such an achievement possible: “I am proud to announce that my fantastic team Cassandra, Zoe, Jeanette, Kayleigh, Megan, Kristiana, Laylah and I have won The Best Hair and Beauty salon in the North East in The Great British Hair and Beauty Awards. The awards were voted for by our loyal customers, who we can’t thank enough. We were up against nine other salons in the North East and are overwhelmed that we won. What we do, we do because we are passionate about our client care and love our job. We genuinely are blessed to have even been nominated, but winning was the icing on the cake. Work Continues to Re-vamp Whitley Bay Promenade
Further work is to get underway to continue the transformation of Whitley Bay’s popular Northern Promenade.
North Tyneside Council has made a significant investment to refurbish the seafront walkway in recent years. The promenade has undergone major upgrades from the area around Watts Slope, linking to the Spanish City Plaza, all the way along to the Rendezvous Café. The improvements so far include new surfacing, railings, lighting, shelters and seating, upgraded steps to access the beach, refurbishment of public toilets, car park resurfacing, a new kiosk at Watts Slope and repairs to the iconic Rendezvous Café. A new storage facility has also been created on the promenade for local charity, Beach Access North East (BANE), which provides free beach wheelchair loans to disabled and elderly people. The next phase of work will focus on an area of promenade north of the Rendezvous café and will involve repairing and replacing the original ‘Battenberg-style’ yellow and red flagstones to retain the character of the promenade. The edging blocks along the sea side of the promenade will be removed and new railings will be installed to match those previously put in along the stretch and near St Marys Island. Two new shelters and pebble seating will also be installed to match the previous phase. The unsightly concrete plinths and shelters, which have fallen into a state of disrepair, will be removed and three sets of steps down to the beach will be refurbished and made safer with new handrails installed. Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “I am so pleased, and I know many of our residents will be 14

too, that we’re about to carry on the excellent work to transform and bring the seafront promenade up-todate and really change it for the better. We have one of the best coastlines in the country, visited by around 2 million people every year, and the promenade is a hugely popular place for visitors and families to enjoy a stroll and grab a coffee and take in some sea air to get away from it all. “The work we’ll be doing along this stretch of the promenade is all about retaining that wonderful heritage and distinctive feel it has with the fantastic Battenburg-style paving stones, which even Beamish Museum were interested in at one stage! But we had to turn them down as we wanted to keep them as we know how popular they are. I’m really looking forward to seeing the work progress over the coming weeks and months and this is yet more to look forward to among all the other exciting things happening along our coastline and around the rest of the borough.” Work commenced in the autumn and will continue until Spring 2022. The project forms part of the Council’s Ambition for North Tyneside strategy, which outlines plans for major investment in each part of the borough. As part of the Ambition strategy, a number of major achievements have already been made, including the major £6million flood alleviation project at Killingworth Lake and the revamp of Forest Hall shopping area, while major regeneration work is underway on the Masterplan for North Shields aimed at revitalising the town centre and improving its connectivity to the Fish Quay.

LOCAL NEWS
Image: North Tyneside Council
Views sought to help North Tyneside reflect on the impact of the pandemic Residents of North Tyneside are being asked for their views on artwork to help remember and reflect on the impact of the pandemic. Residents, families and communities across the Borough have lost loved ones, employment, contact with friends and a more normal way of life. This is an important opportunity to create unique spaces of reflection and areas of collective commemoration. As the vaccine rollout and a greater understanding of the virus continues to bring optimism for the future, communities are looking for ways to reflect on their shared experiences. The local authority is planning to create lasting, physical memorial areas allowing for pause and reflection in five locations linked with the borough’s 30-mile waggonway network. Once used to haul coal to ships on the River Tyne from dozens of coal mines in the borough, the historic waggonways date back to the 19th century. The routes help connect the borough with a central point at Silverlink Biodiversity Park, sometimes known as ‘Sundial park’ due to the giant structure on top of a hill – the highest point in North Tyneside. One of the reflection areas will be situated in the park. All the reflection areas will be based around the theme of a compass, detailed in decorative hard landscaped paving, with seating provided and natural planting as places to sit and reflect. The compass design has been selected as the word compass combines two Latin words – ‘com’ which means together and ‘passus’ which means pace or step. Together they can be interpreted to mean ‘journey together’ which is something that communities in North Tyneside have done throughout the pandemic. A design relevant to each additional location in the borough will feature in centre of the compass and residents are being asked to choose their preferred creatives. Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE said: “We know that the pandemic is not over, but we also know that our communities want to commemorate and remember those we have lost and reflect on our shared experiences.

“As well as those who have sadly passed away from the virus, many people have suffered loss in different ways. This has included loss of employment, loss of the contact with love ones or a sense of loss of a certain way of life. However, community spirit has shone through in the face of a common enemy – I am immensely proud of the strength and determination that has been shown across all of North Tyneside. “The pandemic saw more people than ever get outside to walk and cycle so places linked with the waggonways seems a natural location for the areas of reflection. The designs will provide areas for quiet reflection, to show our incredible community strength by reconnecting our residents to our borough and will be a lasting reminder of the struggles we all overcame. We’d really like residents to tell us what they think should be in the centre of each compass and I’d encourage everyone to provide their views.” Options for the centre of the compass include either a locomotive or mining for the North West, a lighthouse or the Dome for the North East, Segedunum or shipbuilding for the South West, and fishing or the Priory for the South East. A sun will be featured on the compass in the Silverlink Biodiversity Park to compliment the sundial theme. The locations for the areas of reflection include, Kliingworth Lakeside Park, Churchill Playing Fields, Wallsend Hall grounds and Redburn Dene Park, as well as Silverlink Biodiversity Park. You can provide your views by searching ‘have your say’ at www.northtyneside.gov.uk or by using the Community Corners at Customer First Centres. The survey will be open until 14 January 2022. The designs will be available to review in Customer First Centres on the Following dates: 6th – 11th December – Wallsend CFC 4th – 8th January – North Shields CFC 10th – 14th January – White Swan CFC

HIGH QUALITY, AFFORDABLE, GARAGE DOORS A NEW GARAGE DOOR CAN TRANSFORM THE APPEARANCE OF YOUR HOME. Why not invest in a new garage door which incorporates the very latest innovations in design, technology and security. AI Garage Doors offer a wide range of high quality garage doors in a variety of colours, materials and features which comply with industry standards, whilst offering excellent service and price without compromising on safety or security. Their range starts with basic canopy garage doors which can be supplied in white or a selection of standard colours. There are also more premium garage doors offering a larger variety of styles, colours and operating systems There is a garage door in the range to suit everyone based on your requirements and budget. Up and over garage doors consist of a single panel of material. The door has to be pulled out and then pivoted up so it can slide along the roof of the garage. Roll-up garage doors, on the other hand, are made of a number of horizontal sections which are hinged together for flexibility. Because it rests on rollers, it can be lifted, and rolled into place along the roof of the garage. Sectional roll-up doors are more expensive as a rule but have certain advantages. Since these doors don’t have to be pulled outwards they are a great option if space on your drive is tight. They also take up less room in the garage since they can be placed higher than a up and over door. Things to consider: Insulation - Insulated doors can reduce heat loss due to foam-filled aluminium slats, which can help reduce your energy bills and is particularly good for houses with an integral garage. Their sound-proofing properties also offer acoustic insulation. Remote control - For ease, convenience and even safety you can’t beat a remote-controlled door. Override - Make sure the remote can be manually overridden in case of power failure. You don’t want the kids, or the dog trapped in there, or even yourself. Security - Automatic door locking mechanisms are useful. Safety – This one is a top priority. To ensure that an electric garage door is deemed safe for use, it will have to incorporate at least one sufficient safety feature into its mechanism which will prevent personal injury. 24

ENJOY YOUR CONSERVATORY THIS WINTER
If you’re fed up with your conservatory being freezing cold and unusable during the winter then Thermos Roof explain how they have the answer...
C
onservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, firstly to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory and, during the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round, because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory 26

construction. The materials we use are lightweight, therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly
dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and we guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Annual Green Flag Event Sees North Tyneside Win a Magnificent Seven Awards Seven of North Tyneside’s parks are once again the proud recipients of the prestigious Green Flag award. The award is the international benchmark of quality in a park or open green space and is given out each year to parks which meet the very highest standards. The Rising Sun Country Park, Benton Quarry, Marden Quarry, Killingworth Lakeside Parks, Wallsend Parks, Northumberland Park, and Chirton and Redburn Dene Parks will proudly fly the flag again in 2021/22 after meeting strict criteria. A record 2,127 parks and green spaces have been achieved Green Flag status this year as the scheme, run by Keep Britain Tidy, celebrates its 25th anniversary. The flag is a sign to the public that a green space boasts the highest possible environmental standards and has good visitor facilities. Welcoming the announcement of the awards, Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “I am delighted that our parks have retained their Green Flag awards again in 2021/22. “Like the Blue Flag that flies above our beaches, the Green Flag is a signal to the public that they can expect the very highest standards when they visit one of our parks or green spaces. These spaces are cherished by many people across the borough, and they took on added importance during the dark days of the pandemic, giving people an escape into nature and some respite from their confinement at home. “This award is made possible by the community and the council working together to maintain incredibly high standards in North

Tyneside and I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in this achievement. I’d also like to thank Jerry Dronsfield, who led our parks service with great distinction until his retirement earlier this year and played a key role in achieving the Green Flag standard and improving all our parks in North Tyneside.” Research carried out by YouGov for Keep Britain Tidy over the summer has revealed that having access to a quality park or green space helped improve people’s mental health with almost six in ten (59%) saying they felt less stressed when using the park and 55% saying they felt more positive in general. The survey also showed that more than half of people (53%) visit a park or green space at least once a week and more than nine in ten (93%) think that parks and green spaces are important to their local community. Commenting on the announcement of this year’s winners, Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton
OBE said: “As Green Flag Award celebrates 25 years of raising the standard, Keep Britain Tidy is delighted to be the custodian of a scheme that does so much to ensure our parks and green spaces go from strength to strength. At a time when parks have been at the heart of every community across the country it is perhaps not surprising that 95% of the public thinks that their local parks and green spaces need to be protected. “This is why the Green Flag Award is so important. It ensures that parks and green spaces are managed to the highest standards and are safe and accessible for everyone to enjoy and we look forward to the next 25 years. The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards wellmanaged parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

FILM REVIEWS CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG
SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
Genres: Action, Science Fiction, Age Rating: TBC Release date: 15th December
Genres: Action, Adventure, Animated Age Rating: PG Release date: 10th December
'Clifford The Big Red Dog' from the 1960's children book series written by author and cartoonist Norman Bridwell, becomes real in this movie adaptation. The story follows middle schooler Emily Elizabeth, who meets an animal rescuer when struggling to fit in at school. To cheer her up, the unnamed man gives her a small red puppy. They quickly become best friends, but much to her surprise, Clifford turns into a giant ten-foot-tall hound overnight. This is where the movie differs from the original book. Clifford’s precise height has never been explicitly stated before, leaving it up to the readers’ imagination. Unfortunately, his massive size attracts the attention of an evil genetics company that wants to create supersized animals. While this movie might be a great treat for the family, it is not without its flaws. The CGI interpretation of Clifford was met with criticism. Unlike in the books, Clifford in the movie version looks like a giant Labrador retriever dyed with food colouring. However, ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ puts an extraordinary spin on an overused plot. At first glance, Emily’s adventure with her larger-than-life dog seems dull, but their solid friendship is what makes the movie touchingly sweet and full of delight. Despite the traditional story structure, there is an air of acceptance and unconditional love between Emily and Clifford.

Tom Holland returns to the big screen as Marvel’s one and only Peter Parker in the franchise continuation. Peter Parker is finding the true meaning of being a superhero. After his identity as the friendly neighbourhood hero was revealed to the public by Mysterio in the previous instalment, the young Avenger turns to Dr. Strange to restore the secret with magic. A multiverse will emerge in the story, including the appearance of other Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Directed by Jon Watts, Tom Holland reprises his role with his real-life girlfriend Zendaya as his on-screen darling, MJ. Other cast members are Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, and Benedict Wong.
THE KING’S MAN
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy Age Rating: 18 Release date: 22nd December
'The King's Man' is a prequel to the 2014's 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' and the 2017's 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle'. Matthew Vaughn returns to the set to direct the third instalment of the much-loved franchise. This time, the plot goes back into the past. The setting is World
War I, and the story reveals the origin of Kingsman’s first-ever mission as an independent intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion. Led by Orlando, The Duke of Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), the newlyformed team of skilled agents tries to stop international criminal masterminds that are plotting to wipe out the world. Among the teams are Polly (Gemma Arterton), Shola (Djimon Honsou), and Conrad (Harris Dickinson). On the enemy side, other real-life-inspired criminals, such as Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), are represented in the movie. The audience will see how the Kingsman’ tagline, “manners maketh man,” preserved through the generations, was truly created.
NIGHTMARE ALLEY
Genres: Drama, Thriller Age Rating: tbc Release date: January 2022
Bradley Cooper is Stan Carlisle, an ambitious man who works for a travelling carnival in ‘Nightmare Alley’. Having a way with words and a talent for manipulating people, the confident man tries to hook up with Dr Lilith Ritter, a female psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett. Little does he know that she is far more manipulative than he'll ever be. Alongside these two high ranking Hollywood actors, the carnival crew is also full of popular names. Rooney Mara plays Molly, Willem Dafoe plays Clem and Ron Perlman is Bruno the Strongman. The film is based on a 1946 novel with the same title by author William Lindsay Grisham. Horror and thriller movie fans should be familiar with director Guillermo Del Toro's other scary works ‘Blade’, ‘Hellboy’, ‘Pan's Labyrinth’, and, most recently, ‘The Shape of Water’. As such, this movie should be an easy favourite for horror movie buffs.

INGREDIENTS
600g good-quality mixed dried fruits 150ml whisky, warmed 150g stem ginger, drained, plus 8 tbsp ginger syrup from the jar 200g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 300g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp mixed spice 200g soft light brown sugar 4 large free-range eggs 2 tbsp milk Finely grated zest of 2 small oranges and 2 lemons 50g ground almonds 150g whole glacé cherries 36

5. 6.
Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the fruit to plump up. Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a mini food processor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin. Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until pale and fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and any whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries. Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾ hours (this depends very much on your oven. A fan oven will be very quick). If you’re unsure I recommend you check after an hour then every fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm and golden brown. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked. You can cover it loosely with foil after 1 hour if the centre needs more time. This prevents the surface darkening too much. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, and then remove to a wire rack to cool. Remove a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard. Cut the cake in half to make 2 rectangles. Top with marzipan and white fondant icing and decorate with a sprig of holly.

D’ YE DEE ART? Yes, it’s a famous line stolen from Lee Hall’s ‘The Pitmen Painters’, but it’s a very good question.
The St. Andrew’s Art Club is a small group of leisure artists who meet to paint and to socialise in St. Andrew’s United Reformed Church in Monkseaton each Wednesday afternoon. Their ‘space’ is a very comfortable, light-filled room and with all the facilities they require to hone their craft. The groups talents are varied, and most of all they all enjoy what they do, and continually challenge themselves to practise and improve their skills. “St. Andrew’s” is a club and not a class, with a weekly membership fee. And they welcome you to join them. The only criticism they allow is ‘selfcriticism’ and they fully support and encourage each other, giving advice when it’s requested, and leaving you alone to create if it is not. It doesn’t matter if you are a starter, a returner to art, or have made art for years, if you would like to try them out, why not pop along on a Wednesday afternoon, have a look at the set up, and have a chat with some of the regulars. Start time is 1pm and the sessions run until 4pm. St. Andrew’s URC is on the corner of Woodleigh Road and Eastfield Avenue (take the turning at the Branch Library on Cauldwell Lane) So....d’ ye dee art? If yes then this could be perfect for you, if you are unsure, why not have a go and see? The experts tell us (and prove it with science) that ‘art’ is good for our well-being, it allows us to be creative, it’s relaxing and rewarding, and like gardening – it’s therapeutic – but takes less energy! Just take a look at what the pitmen-painters achieved from humble beginnings. If you’d like a chat about joining the club, or have any questions, please call Trish on 0191 2581751 - They look forward to seeing you and helping you along on your creative journey.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. PERSONAL WELFARE This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. PROPERTY AND AFFAIRS This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

MAKE SURE THE WEBSITE IS GENUINE Some scammers are very good at designing websites to look like well-known brands and can fool the unwary. The best way to make sure you are shopping on the genuine website is to type in the address yourself rather than clicking on a link.
2
CHECK THEIR REPUTATION If you are unfamiliar with the retailer, it is wise to do an online search to check reviews and feedback from other customers to gauge their reputation.
3
LOOK FOR CONTACT DETAILS. Check that a physical UK address and contact telephone number is provided for the trader prior to making the purchase. Be aware that a co.uk web address does not necessarily mean the trader is based in this
42

ABC MAGAZINES
country. If things go wrong, it may be hard for you, or the authorities, to take action against an overseas trader, or a trader that cannot be found!
4
CHECK THE REFUND & RETURNS POLICY BEFORE YOU ORDER This should be available on the website. You have a right to a cooling off period when you buy online. Make sure that the trader provides details of your right to cancel and the procedure for returning your order. They should state that: - You have at least 14 days starting the day after delivery to inform them of your wish to cancel. - You have a further 14 days in which to return the goods. - You are entitled to a refund of any standard delivery charge as well as the cost of the goods. Bear in mind that traders can specify that you are responsible for paying the cost of any return. You should think about this carefully if goods you order are particularly heavy.
5
KEEP YOUR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE UP TO DATE. The latest versions of web browsers help block spoof websites. Switch on the ‘automatic updates’ setting so your protection is kept up-to-date.
6
ENSURE THE CHECKOUT IS SECURE. At the online check-out, before you type in your credit card details, make sure the web address bar has switched from ‘http:’ to ‘https:’ to indicate a secure, encrypted connection. Any legitimate online site processing payments always switch to a secure connection at this stage. Look out too for the padlock
SHOP SECURELY If you are buying goods valued at over £100, consider using a credit card as if things go wrong, you can request a refund directly from your card provider. If you pay by debit card, your card provider may offer a chargeback facility if goods are not delivered or are faulty. But this is not required by law and may be strictly time limited. PayPal may also offer some protection but again this is not a legal requirement and will be subject to their terms and conditions. Avoid paying by bank transfer, as the bank will not be responsible for a refund if things go wrong.
8
GUARD YOUR PRIVACY. Do not disclose personal information unless you know who is receiving it, why they need it.
9
KEEP A RECORD OF YOUR TRANSACTIONS. Set up a folder where you can store all your transaction history. It’s also helpful to take a screenshot of how the goods have been described at the time of ordering. This way, if there is ever a dispute you have the information.
10
THINK TWICE, CLICK ONCE As the Christmas deal offers start stacking up in your inbox, it’s easy to forget that not all emails bring festive cheer. Most hacks start by convincing you to open an attachment or visit a link to download something. It’s an easy way for bad folk to install malware on your machine. Emails that can at first glance look to be from a known retailer, may be a scam. Think twice, click once. If something is unexpected don’t trust it – delete it. Northumberland County Councillor Colin Horncastle, said: “Covid has changed the way many of us shop and the internet can be a convenient way of buying the things we need. Try and buy from a local online retailer if you can, to support our small businesses with your custom. It may be more important to them this year than ever before.”

Blue Plaque Tribute for North Shields Guitar Legend Hilton Valentine A blue plaque ceremony was held to celebrate the life of guitar legend, Hilton Valentine, at his childhood home in North Shields. A founding member of 60s ‘British Invasion’ group, The Animals, Hilton was best known for composing one of the most famous rock intros of all time from the band’s breakthrough hit, House of the Rising Sun, in 1964. He was greatly admired by other rock and roll luminaries such as Bob Dylan for his distinctive playing on a string of hit records, including We Gotta Get out of This Place and Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood. Hilton and his bandmates Eric Burdon, Chas Chandler, Alan Price, and John Steel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and Hollywood’s Rock Walk of Fame in 2001. In 2011, he returned to his musical roots and paid tribute to the street where he grew up with the album Skiffledog on Coburg Street. His last recording in 2019 was River Tyne, a sombre folk song that celebrated the river close to his boyhood home. Hilton passed away in January 2021, aged 77. As a permanent tribute, last month North Tyneside
Council unveiled a blue plaque at his childhood home at 42 Coburg Street, North Shields, where he lived between 1944 and 1960. The special event on Tuesday 16 November featured live music from his three bands – The Heppers, The Wildcats, and The Animals - courtesy of the TyneIdols bus, and there were talks from those who knew him best including his wife, Germaine, making a special visit from their home in Connecticut. Councillor Pat Oliver, Deputy Chair also gave a welcome address at the unveiling. She said: “Hilton Valentine was a pioneering guitarist whose unique playing style influenced the sound of rock and roll over many decades and had a profound impact on fans and musicians alike. “Although he enjoyed worldwide fame, he was a proud North Shields lad who frequently drew on his North Tyneside heritage as a source of inspiration in his music. As a council we thought it was important to recognise and pay tribute to his phenomenal talent and to mark the place where his musical journey began. I hope the plaque will bring joy to his family, friends, and fans in North Tyneside.”

THE RISE IN OVER-50’S DIVORCE When I began assisting divorce clients in the late 1980’s most of them would be in their late twenties or early thirties. Today the vast majority of my clients will be over 50 and this has been the case for at least ten years. If you listened to your friends in the pub, you may well be given bar room advice that bears no resemblance to the way that such cases are settled. Traditionally divorce solicitors would try to maintain the matrimonial home at all costs on behalf of a lower earning wife who was going to look after the children whilst her exhusband went out to work. But when dealing with divorce clients in their fifties the situation is completely different. Quite frequently the mortgage will be very low or non existent. Therefore there would be a considerable amount of equity to play with. The property may also be more valuable as the couple traded up throughout their marriage. An entirely different scenario to dealing with low equity and a lower value matrimonial home which would have been the case earlier in the marriage.
FUTURE MORTGAGE COSTS Time and time again solicitors put forward a deal whereby one party maintains the house and the other party will keep their pension. But how can this possibly fair upon the other party? Rick and Elaine are both 53 years of age. They have a house worth £750,000 with no mortgage. They both have savings, their cars are paid for and they both have pensions. Rick’s pensions are worth £950,000 and Elaine’s £100,000. Elaine wishes to retain the matrimonial home I am told, Rick can retain his pension and we will adjust savings to make everything equal. But it won’t be equal will it? It may have taken Elaine and Rick over twenty years to pay off the mortgage. For Rick to buy himself a new home may well involve him having to take out a new mortgage. He would therefore have mortgage interest payments to make for years ahead, stamp duty, legal fees and removal fees. THE PENSION CONUNDRUM Rick’s pension is quite high. He wants to go on working and contributing to his pension. But soon he will have reached his Lifetime Allowance of £1million+ Meaning that when he wishes to take his pension he may well be taxed at 55%. It was always the case that a higher pension would probably be offset against equity in the matrimonial home. But this is no longer the best way forward in many instances, it is not very tax efficient. It is necessary to be more creative when dealing with an over 50’s divorce. That’s why I’m doing it differently. Some people refer to these clients as Silver Splitters!! As someone who is over fifty I actually find this term to be rather insulting. It almost assumes there is nothing left to give, and yet many people achieve bigger and better things in life once they have created financial freedom and their children, if they had any, have grown up. In Elaine and Rick’s case I would potentially suggest 46

ABC MAGAZINES
JACQUELINE EMMERSON
that the matrimonial home is sold. They should split their pensions and savings equally - their current incomes and future earning capacity must be taken into account as this may cause an adjustment. They should also have their pensions valued by a specialist. You cannot swap like for like. Even if they both had a pension worth £500,000 it is highly unlikely that would result in the same monthly income. If Elaine had an NHS pension and part of Rick’s pension was self funded then her pension would pay out substantially more per month than his. It can be very difficult to obtain a mortgage in this age group, lenders criteria can be very strict. And don’t assume that either party will be able to, or will want to, go on working in order to pay off a mortgage; ill health, the need to look after your own parents or redundancy could all come your way. Or, after years of working very long hours to build up assets it may well be time to reduce working hours or cease working altogether. When dealing with a younger family who have children then the needs of those children would be the focus of any financial settlement. However, when dealing with a couple over fifty I am more likely to concentrate on a mortgage free home, the ability to maintain that property - what if the boiler blows or the roof needs to be fixed? There is also the need to have enough money to live on upon retirement. That’s where taking time to sort out pensions is essential.
HELPING YOU AND YOUR FUTURE One of my most important roles is to obtain a settlement for a client that helps them not just now but in ten or twenty years time. Whilst my client can often only deal with now, my task is to protect their future. TELEPHONE BEFRIENDING SERVICE HELPS LOCAL RESIDENT MAUREEN COMBAT LONELINESS Age UK North Tyneside’s free telephone friendship service means you can enjoy chatting with someone over the phone, all from the comfort of your own home. of the befriending services that she is becoming more confident again and is beginning now to get out and about. She’s able to visit her husband again and this she really looks forward to. Maureen’s volunteer befriender Gary is a full time primary school teacher who relocated to the North East from Norfolk 12 years ago. During the initial lockdown Gary felt that he wanted to give something back to his local community and so considered volunteering. He says that befriending fits in with his busy schedule but in the future he’d consider face to face volunteering too. Gary said “My befriending coordinator Carole is very supportive of Maureen and I and checks in regularly with us both to make sure that everything is continuing to go well”. Maureen enjoying a game of snooker Maureen is 67 years old and lives alone following her husband’s stroke. Her husband moved into a residential care setting and prior to this they had led an active life together playing snooker competitions across the country. She had been originally introduced to snooker by the Chairman of the disability sports group in 1996 and met her husband when his business agreed to sponsor her on the Ladies Tour. They participated in numerous competitions and this resulted in them winning the 2010 World Championships. The couple had been fortunate enough to meet many of the leading snooker legends along their way. She was a loyal supporter of the World Women’s Snooker Tour for over 15 years. Alongside major ranking events, Maureen also competed in several side events including senior’s competitions, reaching eight finals. Known as the ‘Gadget Queen’ for her wide range of cue adaptations, Maureen also competed on the World Disability Billiards and Snooker Tour. Maureen appeared in the Evening Chronicle at the time to comment on the fact that some snooker halls would not accept female players. She was runner up in the North Tyneside Sports Personality of the Year award. During the lockdown period Maureen had become more isolated from her friends, family and her fellow snooker players and was referred to the Age UK North Tyneside Telephone Befriending service. The co-ordinator took great care in matching Maureen with a volunteer befriender who had a personal interest in sport. Although at first their conversations were quite “reserved” Maureen says they quickly struck up an ongoing friendship. Maureen says “We have a good laugh, Gary’s a canny lad. I look forward to our calls and would definitely recommend the service to others”. She feels as a result 48

ENERGY ADVICE AVAILABLE FOR OLDER PEOPLE
Older people will be some of the mostaffected by the energy bills crisis but are missing out on vital support, according to charity Age UK North Tyneside.
The charity’s Information and Advice service has seen an influx of queries from worried older people across the area since the price-cap on energy bills was raised last month. This comes as temperatures begin to drop, and a recent survey from clothing firm Damart showed that more than three million people across the UK will not turn their central heating on this winter due to worries about the rising cost of bills. And Age UK North Tyneside’s Head of Charity Services Yvonne Probert says there are many people who are not accessing the financial support they are entitled to and are on unnecessarily-expensive energy tariffs. She said: “Older people are one of the most vulnerable groups at risk from this price rise. They are at home more often – especially during this pandemic – and feel the cold more than most people, so will need the heating on higher, for longer. “Unfortunately, we have seen that there are a lot of older people who are not getting the money they are eligible for. “When somebody uses our Information and Advice service we can see what benefits, pensions, credits they are getting, and then we can help them access the money that can help them pay their energy bills. “A lot of older people also do not switch providers, which means they end up on a standard tariff paying a premium amount of money, when they could be paying a lot less, so we help them with that as well.” 52

ABC MAGAZINES
Yvonne and the charity as a whole are encouraging older people to get in touch to find out how they can avoid having to take the drastic action of keeping their heating off for winter. They are also encouraging customers to use SMART meters to help them stay in control of their energy use She added: “Fundamentally, many older people just don’t understand their energy bills – they are really quite complicated with lots of information and technical terms, making them quite confusing. “Ultimately, it is about being more informed about what you are entitled to and how you can make changes to make the rising cost of bills more manageable. “We can help people make those changes, and put them in touch with other organisations that can help make their homes as energy-efficient as possible.” Last year the Information and Advice service achieved an astounding benefit gain of almost £1.2m for North Tyneside residents, while average incomes of these customers went up by £140.62 per week. In the last three months alone it has responded to a massive 1,616 queries from customers across the borough. Age UK North Tyneside’s Information and Advice service is one of a number of offerings designed to help older people make more of life. It also has customer service team who can support older adults to explore a variety of other services that are available such as healthy habits, health and wellbeing group/activities, befriending and dementia support. FANCY A BREAK? Right now we all need something to look forward to, and a UK coach break could be just the ticket! Local coach tourism experts Graham Wright and John Hindhaugh have started their own coach tour company and are taking bookings now. Graham explains more...

ohn and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always

THAT’S A
WRAP Follow these handy gift wrapping tips and you won't just be remembered for the gifts you choose but the beautiful way you wrap them too.
Gift vouchers Hide a gift voucher in an item that wouldn’t ordinarily be considered a gift, then wrap it as beautifully as you can. Who wouldn’t be surprised to unwrap the prettiest gift under the tree and discover that you’ve given them a brick, a phone book, or a box of cereal? Of course, the best bit will be the look on their face when they uncover the hidden gift voucher. Perfume Buy a cute stuffed animal and dress it in an article of doll’s clothing that has a pocket. Tuck the bottle of perfume into the pocket and wrap the stuffed animal as usual. Bicycle Wrapping a bicycle is not an easy task. So instead, try wrapping a miniature bicycle in a small box, and include clues to where you’ve hidden the real thing! An amazing present and a fun game all rolled into one! Another option is to print out a picture of the bicycle with clues as to where you’ve hidden it. Attach a piece of a matching coloured card slightly larger than the printout of the bike. Place the printout in a box and wrap the gift in a nice matching paper and ribbon.
FOR THE MUSICIAN IT’S ALL IN THE PREPARATION
The better prepared you are, the more efficiently you can wrap. Here are a few ideas that will save you hassle: Find a smooth surface where you can spread out. A large table is much easier to work on than a bed or the floor. Store everything you need in one place to save you having to hunt around the house looking for stuff. Keep the proper gift wrapping tools handy, such as scissors, tape or tape dispenser and string or cotton thread to measure your gift box and work out how much wrapping paper you will need. Stock up on gift wrapping materials such as wrapping paper, Tissue paper, ribbon and gift tags. Keep boxes that you accumulate through the year and use them to put gifts in. Use any extra scraps of wrapping paper to make a bow. It will add a little touch of flair, plus you’ll have less to clean up! Comic strips, fabric, festive or themed magazine pages can be a creative alternative if you run out of wrapping paper. Curling ribbon is a great time-saving alternative to handmade bows. It’s relatively inexpensive, so you can curl dozens of strips of it to decorate a present and make it look festive.
KEEP THEM GUESSING
One of the most brilliant things about opening a present is the element of surprise. But some gifts are more difficult to disguise than others. Here are some tips on how to keep people guessing right till the end: 56
|
ABC MAGAZINES
If you know someone who’s serious about their music, why not use sheet music to wrap up their gifts? You could even cut out a large musical note on black paper and use it as the gift tag. Alternatively, you can wrap concert tickets, CDs and other music-related gifts in a poster of their favourite group or artist.
FOR ADVENTUROUS TYPES
Get creative with the family. A nature walk is an amazing opportunity to discover and gather all sorts of treasures: pinecones, acorns, leaves, twigs and fir clippings. When you bring them home you can glitter or paint them and use double sided tape to attach them to parcels. Alternatively, by not painting them, you can achieve a more natural, rustic look.
GET CREATIVE • • • • •
Tie a whisk on a set of mixing bowls or a magnifying glass on an Atlas. Use Christmas ornaments to add festive appeal to your Christmas presents. Tie up parcels with a colourful scarf. Collect from nature. Garden and parks are full of colourful leaves, greenery, berries or pinecones which you can use. Greeting cards covered with pictures, or words cut from magazines can be turned into uniquely creative gift tags.

The average household generates more rubbish at Christmas than at any other time of the year, but if you recycle more you can help to make it a happier Christmas for the environment. ADVENT CALENDARS
Recycle the card from your advent calendar in your recycling bin. If your calendar had chocolates inside, place the empty plastic tray in your grey recycling bin after you’ve removed the foil. Foil can be put in your recycling bin too.

Christmas cards that don’t have glitter or glue on them can be recycled. Turn those that can’t be recycled into gift tags for next year!

Supermarkets, along with many council buildings, schools and the Household Waste Recycling Centre, have battery disposal points so please take your batteries there. Use rechargeable batteries wherever possible.
WRAPPING PAPER
Remove excess sticky tape before recycling wrapping paper. Metallic, foil and glittery wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and gift tags can’t be recycled, so put these in your general waste bin.
TINS & TUBS
Reuse large sweet or biscuit tins and plastic tubs – they are ideal for storage. They can all be recycled too.
LEFTOVERS
Transform your festive leftovers into something delicious like turkey sandwiches, soup or bubble and squeak. Visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
PACKAGING
Cardboard can go in your grey bin, remove all polythene, polystyrene and excess sticky tape first. Flatten empty boxes to minimise the space they take up in your bin.
CHRISTMAS TREES
Real Christmas trees can be dropped off at the Household Waste Recycling Centre

BOOKS
A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
Christmas is a wonderful time to curl up with a book. The shelves are full of this year’s new and shiny celebrity offerings. But Christmas is surely a time for nostalgia. So, pour yourself a glass of eggnog or mulled wine and let’s visit Christmas Past…
FOR GROWN-UPS
FOR KIDS
For a real nostalgia-fest and a lyrical description of times gone by, when ‘December was as white as Lapland though there were no reindeers’? dig out ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ by Dylan Thomas, preferably with Edward Ardizzone’s illustrations. Short, simple, and beautiful, it sums up Christmas with the Uncles, snow on the ground and the myriad delights for a small boy on the best day of the year. If, however, you are feeling slightly less full of cheer and goodwill, Jilly Cooper might be more to your taste. The Christmas scene in ‘Appassionata’ is one of my favourite depictions of the holiday, and every December I find myself turning first to ‘How to Survive Christmas’ – bleak, witty and sometimes crushingly accurate, it is Cooper’s account of how to get through a typical festive season. Another excellent book with a brief but memorable Christmas sequence, is ‘Angels and Men’ by Catherine Fox. It is hard to get hold of, but I promise you, Mara’s Christmas with her grandmother is not one you will forget – and the rest of the book is beautifully written, too. Finally, from the realms of fantasy, why not try Christmas Discworld style in ‘Hogfather’ by Terry Pratchett? Was there ever a writer with a sharper wit? As you might expect, his Santa is quite different – for a start, those are pigs, not reindeer pulling his sleigh. And he seems a little on the bony side. What does Death have to do with Christmas? More than you might think....
For many people, ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs is their Christmas classic of choice. I actually prefer his ‘Father Christmas.’ Less saccharine and eloquently told with pictures and few words, it follows a curmudgeonly Santa on his journey around the globe, dropping off presents, struggling down chimneys, trudging upstairs, through all kinds of weather...Merry Bloomin’ Christmas! Another favourite is ‘Dear Father Christmas’ by Jeanne Willis and Rosie Reeve. This picture book follows Mary as she writes her Christmas letter. Her wishes are different, as she doesn’t need any more toys – but an everlasting hamster and self-tying shoelaces would come in rather handy. Of course, there is a twist in the tale, but we don’t see it coming, and my kids read it over and over again – even at the height of summer. If you like the Jolly Postman, then you will love ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. As you might expect, there are a range of letters to open, with cards, games and even a jigsaw puzzle for the lucky nursery rhyme characters on his rounds. An absolute delight.

AND FINALLY... How could we look at Christmas without mentioning the two biggest Christmas classics ever? I mean of course, ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens and ‘The Night Before Christmas’ by Clement C Moore. I know you have seen a million and one adaptations of the
former (The Muppets do it best!), but the book really is worth a read. Be honest, when else are you going to curl up by the fire with a Dickens novel if not during a long snowy holiday? Try it. As for the former, we read it aloud every Christmas Eve, just before the lights go out. I stole this tradition from a friend, and I am passing it on to you. Merry Christmas!
