USING ART TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS Local artists Beth Lewins and Jennifer Ironside aim to improve the wellbeing of others through their engaging art and craft classes.
A
recent study found that the arts can help keep us well, aid recovery and support longer lives. The arts also help meet challenges in health and social care associated with ageing, loneliness, long-term conditions and mental health. Crucially they can also help save the care sector money.*
Aware of these huge benefits, Beth Lewins and Jennifer Ironside founded Take pART North East CIC in 2017, with the belief that they could improve the lives of others by sharing their creative skills and passion. They do this by working with community groups, schools and Care homes to provide quality art and craft sessions with social wellbeing being the main focus. Take pART aims to deliver creative activities that allow anyone, regardless of age, ability, or experience to explore art, craft and self-expression. The pair teach engaging techniques used in drawing and painting, in addition to fun activities to allow individuals to shake off their fears of producing art (often resulting from experiences at school), working both independently and together as a group. Beth and Jennifer are artists with over 15 years teaching experience, ranging from nursery level to adults, and both hold current DBS checks. From a young age they both always knew they wanted to help improve people’s lives, but they weren’t sure in which capacity they would do this. After working across a number of different sectors including health, business 6

and education, they joined together to form Take pART North East CIC. With their combined creative expertise, they offer a whole host of workshops and classes locally in the North East. They can help with specific projects, where they are providing the opportunity to work on something creative, stimulating and absorbing with the aim of increasing well-being. Bespoke sessions for community groups such as WI, youth groups and mature clients are also available. The duo can also visit a care home or day centre where they will carry out sensory art activities, aimed at stimulating all the senses in a fun and relaxed set of sessions. GIVE YOUR HOME A NEW LOOK WHILST HELPING TO FIGHT HEART DISEASE The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is this autumn calling on the nation to transform their homes and help beat heartbreak forever by taking on its Makeover Challenge.
L
aunching this October, the BHF are asking shoppers to get creative and give their homes a fresh new look as we move inside for the autumn months, using items bought at BHF stores.
From upcycling a pre-loved piece of furniture to refreshing a whole room or space, the BHF are encouraging interiors enthusiasts, bargain hunters and those on a budget to get involved and head into one of their 180 furniture and home stores across England, Scotland and Wales to bag a bargain, give their home a seasonal update and share the new looks on social media with the #BoughtatBHF hashtag. Offering furniture and electrical goods, new and used homewares and stylish homes accessories, every item sold in BHF stores will help to raise funds for research into heart disease, stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes. Last year, BHF furniture stores sold over 140,000 donated sofas, which went towards raising more than £25 million for the charity’s vital work. Interior design expert and TV presenter Linda Barker said: ‘British Heart Foundation stores are a real treasure trove of hidden gems and a great place to get inspired when giving your home a fresh new look. Whether upcycling a vintage piece of furniture or simply adding some new accessories, you can give a space a makeover without having to break the bank – all while helping raise funds for life saving heart research.’ Allison Swaine-Hughes, Retail Director at the BHF said: “With the cooler months just around the corner, autumn is 10

the ideal time to give your home a refresh. We know our shoppers have got stacks of creativity, so we want to see the fantastic ways they’ve been transforming their homes. Every penny raised in our shops goes towards vital research into heart disease, stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes.” BHF furniture and home stores offer the perfect solution for students, first time buyers and savvy shoppers seeking affordable home wares, with sofas from £95 and wardrobes from £40 - shoppers can also take advantage of the BHF’s free delivery service for items over £30. NEW ‘ART STOP’ PART OF FISH QUAY IMPROVEMENTS Passengers can now enjoy some unique art while they wait for their bus as part of a welcome makeover of North Shields Fish Quay.
T
he new bus shelter at Fiddler’s Green is billed as the latest gallery for professional artists and writers in North Tyneside.
North Tyneside Council’s North Shields Fish Quay Coastal Communities Team, FISH (Folk Interested in Shields Harbour) and Studio Above the Fish Shop developed the idea for an ‘art stop’ in partnership with the council and Nexus. It already features work by local poet Paul Summers, who was inspired by his daily walks between Tynemouth and North Shields, and various other pieces of art will also be added and change every few months. Artist Helen Smith, who runs Studio Above the Fish Shop on the Fish Quay, said: “North Tyneside is spilling over with talented artists and writers. The art stop is a great way for them to make a new artwork or poem for the enjoyment of visitors, residents and those of us who work on the Fish Quay.” Cllr Frank Lott, Chairman of the North Shields Fish Quay Coastal Communities Team, said: “It’s fantastic to see the new art stop in place on the Fish Quay. It is a unique feature that really enhances the area for residents and visitors and is a great way of showcasing the artistic talents of so many local people. This is the latest example of the Coastal Communities Team’s commitment to making public spaces around the Fish Quay more attractive and promoting the visitor economy.” 12
The ‘art stop’ is one of a number of improvements around the Fish Quay, which have been completed through the Coastal Community Team. The Coastal Community Team is a local partnership made up of North Tyneside Council and a range of local interest groups, businesses and stakeholders from the community. The team delivered the brand new bus shelter before the artwork was installed. The other recently-completed changes include: • Fifteen new commercial bin stores – installed to improve the appearance of the area, particularly for people eating and drinking nearby, and resolve issue with fly-tipping and vermin • A new Fish Quay website has been launched – www.fish-quay.com – featuring information about the quay, things to do, places to eat and drink. • New Fish Quay branding – developed in partnership with Thinkpad Creative and the Coastal Community Team, the branding is used on the new website and all promotional materials and events There is more to come too with two large signs being developed to be placed at either end of the Fish Quay, in the Tanners Bank and Bell Street areas, to welcome people and direct them around the quay. Three new CCTV cameras covering the entire quay are also in operation with a further three due to go live this month to help improve security.

OVER 60'S GET THAT FRIDAY FEELING! Free Friday swimming sessions in North Tyneside have been extended after proving a hit with over 60s.
H
undreds of residents aged 60 and over have taken up North Tyneside Council’s offer of free swimming on Fridays at all of its pools since the scheme was launched in September 2017.
It was initially funded through Sport England’s Swim Local project for a year but has been so successful that the council has decided to continue the initiative for a further 12 months. ‘Free swim Fridays’ are a great way of encouraging regular use of the pools among older residents, with the associated benefits that swimming offers to health and wellbeing. Swimming supports body weight, with no pressure on joints. It’s ideal for those with injuries or illnesses like arthritis and studies show that half an hour of swimming, three times a week, can significantly reduce blood pressure. There’s also the social side of getting to know other swimmers and the rhythmic nature of swimming helps to boost psychological wellbeing too. Since launching the scheme more than 1,600 over 60s have taken up the free swimming offer – 39 per cent of whom are new users to the council’s facilities. More than 15,000 swims by over 60s have taken place on
16
Fridays over the last year, compared to 8,000 the year before. And senior swimming has increased by 15 per cent across council-run pools compared to the previous year. Cllr Sarah Day, cabinet member for Sport and Leisure, said: “We know how much these sessions mean to North Tyneside’s over 60s community and that is why I am delighted that we are going to be running them again. Swimming is a fantastic pastime and a great way to stay healthy, so we want to give all of our residents the chance to take advantage of North Tyneside’s outstanding facilities. “We have four fantastic pools, with friendly staff and tutors to support people who may not have been swimming for a while. So regardless of how long it’s been, or your past swimming experience, we can support you in your journey.” Free swim Fridays run every Friday at Waves in Whitley Bay, Tynemouth Pool, The Lakeside Centre in Killingworth and Hadrian Leisure Centre in Wallsend. There’s no need to book – just visit any pool with proof of age. To find out more, visit www.northtyneside.gov.uk or ask at any pool.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING NORTH EAST CREATIVES Enterprising couple build upon the sucess of their Whitley Bay business
J
ust 12 months after opening their Whitley Bay shop Paul and Lucy Hull, owners of For the Love of the North are celebrating success by opening their second shop.
Alongside their website, For the Love of the North had been solely based on Whitley Road in Whitley Bay selling a range of high quality cards, prints and gifts all sourced from North-East artists and creatives. Paul and Lucy also have gallery space which up until 22nd Sep is housing an exhibition of Whitley Bay artist Darren Mundy’s work. They sell tickets, provide advice to visitors and keep a rolling collection of flyers and brochures detailing what’s going on in the local area. However, the enterprising couple who now employ 5 staff, launched their second shop within Stack in Newcastle City Centre in August. Stack is situated on the site of the old Odeon Cinema in Pilgrim Street and is the city’s very first leisure and shopping destination using shipping containers. Paul was nominated as one of 10 finalists in the Tourism Superstar awards run by a national newspaper 22

He said, “I’ve always known we have such amazing, independent artists and craftspeople here in our region that often go unnoticed and we are delighted to be able to provide them with a retail platform in both our Whitley Bay and Newcastle stores.” Lucy said “We are hugely passionate about the NorthEast and having a physical presence in Newcastle city centre opens up so many new avenues for us and the creatives whom we support. We couldn’t be happier to bring products which have been so lovingly created into Newcastle. It’s a hugely exciting time for For the Love of the North. SAYING THANK YOU TO WOMEN OF THE WAR 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
W
hilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today. Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. Edwardian women were expected to be mothers, carers and homemakers. But with men leaving to fight in the war, women had to take on the jobs of those who were serving. From 1914, millions took on jobs traditionally held More than 1.5 million women flooded into these industries and others to replace men away at the front. In 1914 just over 2 million worked in factories and by the end of the war it was nearly 3 million. For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service, 28
business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. Although when the war was over many women were forced to quit industrial jobs to make way for returning men, their role in the war had fundamentally changed how society regarded them and in 1918 around 8.5 million women first got the vote, following the actions of the suffragette movement. The Women of the War brooch is a stunning piece of jewellery. Plated with a gold tone and hand finished with brilliant baguette crystals, the poppy brooches are dedicated to the memory of the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the First World War, whose names are recognised by CWGC as women serving in the auxiliary units during the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women and also acts as a way of saying thank you to all the women, who often have untold stories, who ultimately went on to change society and women’s place within it. With all profits raised from the sale of the brooches going directly to the Legion and their important work, they also help support the British Armed Forces family today. The Women of the First World War brooch is available from The Royal British Legion’s official online shop www.poppyshop.org.uk for £29.99

T
he Trust Star Awards honours and celebrates the achievement of children and young people across a range of categories including achievement, inspiration, breakthrough, inclusion, fundraising, volunteering, local hero, useful and kind and can do attitude.
All of the award categories are sponsored by local and national business including Capita, Kier, Muckle LLP, Accenture, NHS, Engie, TES, Karbon Homes and Vision for Education. Over 600 nominations from Trust schools were received this year from which four finalists in each category were chosen. Matt Bailey from the Capital Radio breakfast team hosted the awards ceremony in the grand Assembly Rooms where guests got to share the outstanding stories and achievements of 48 children and young people from 30 Trust schools. The finalists, their families and Headteachers all attended the glittering awards ceremony and were presented with gift bags worth £150. Sponsors chose a winner in each category and winner awards were presented to 12 outstanding finalists who the sponsors felt deserved exceptional recognition of their achievements. This year the North Tyneside Business Forum supported the Star Awards and presented the resilience award which is designed to recognise children who have demonstrated extreme courage and determination in overcoming adversity. Presenting the award David Bavaird expressed how humbling it was to be in a room with what he described as “amazing young people from North Tyneside”. The NTLT Star Awards over the past 5 years has recognised the achievements of over 2,000 children and young people in North Tyneside and continues to be the highlight of the Trust annual calendar. 30

COBALT CENTRAL COFFEE & DELI
RELAUNCHES WITH NEW LOOK & TASTY MENU
A
local café has rebranded and relaunched a superb new menu full of fresh local produce and tasty favourites.
Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli, as you can tell from the name, is based at Cobalt Central, only a 2 minute drive away, next to Tesco, and has ample free parking right on the door step. Having taken over the premises in April 2017, the new owners initially kept the existing business name, the Spud and Lettuce, as well as keeping the look and original menu. They took their time to listen to customer feedback and what changes their regulars would like to see, both to the menu and the look and feel of the café. Having listened to all the feedback, the café underwent a total transformation during the summer, and has re-launched as Cobalt Central Coffee & Deli. Not only has the name changed, but the menu has been updated to include the most popular choices from the old menu, whilst adding their own favourites and exclusive dishes. Serving breakfast, lunches, light bites, coffee and cake, Cobalt Central’s commitment is to serve fresh, homemade food with locally sourced produce wherever possible. The brand new menu boasts a select of breakfast offerings, ranging from full English (in 2 different sizes) to lighter bites such as scrambled eggs 32
and eggs benedict. They have a range of lunchtime treats including sandwiches, salads, paninis, wraps, baked potatoes, cakes for those of you with a sweet tooth and a range of daily specials. Drinks include coffees (local Tynemouth brand), teas, frappés, protein shakes, smoothies and many more. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options means there is something for everyone to enjoy. Not only has the menu been re-vamped, so has the interior, which has a fresh, welcoming new décor and ample seating. As well as plenty of seating in the café, weather permitting, there is outdoor seating and the full menu is available to take away too!

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE BUSINESSES ACROSS THE NORTH EAST AND BEYOND ARE NOW ABLE TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTE WITH THEIR TEAM-BUILDING EXERCISES – BY WRITING AND RECORDING THEIR OWN COMPANY ANTHEM.
O
ne Day Anthem has brought together writers, producers and singers who have worked with some of the biggest names in showbiz, including Taylor Swift, Basement Jaxx, Sam Smith and Elbow.
They spend one day with employees, where together they write and record a unique song to sum up the business. One Day Anthem director Will Lang, who set up the business from his home in North Shields, said there is no better way of raising morale and bringing people together than making music. Will said: “I have been involved in all kinds of musical projects for the past decade, working with people from all walks of life, including being asked to speak in Westminster on how musical experiences in people’s everyday life increase engagement and well-being. “There is so much research which shows the positive effect music can have on a person’s well-being. “I came up with One Day Anthem because I see music as an ideal way of bringing employees together, whatever their role or status in a company, to build bonds and celebrate where they work. “By going into businesses and singing and making music together, I really believe we can help de-stress workers and make a positive impact on their mental health. 36
“This is team-building with a difference, and I can’t wait to work with more businesses across the region as we grow and grow!” Will’s team go into businesses of any size and start with a blank page. After picking a theme and a genre, groups go through a guided song-writing process, where they write the lyrics to their anthem, sing and even play instruments. By the end of the day businesses are left with their own recorded anthem, with all the pop studio magic, which they can use for their own purposes, whether it be for a TV advert, product launch or just for fun. Will added: “Teams come away from the day stronger, closer and more connected - imagine what that motivated, high-performing team will achieve.

By the end of the day businesses are left with their own recorded anthem, with all the pop studio magic, which they can use for their own purposes, whether it be for a TV advert, product launch or just for fun.
“Businesses leave with a fully mixed and mastered track and accompanying film as a lasting keepsake of the day they channelled your inner Ed Sheeran, and possibly even air-grabbed for the first time. “It really is team building like no other.” Anna Jenner, 33, took part in a One Day Anthem training event. She said: “I’ve done a lot of Team Building days, but none as interesting or fun as this one. “By taking away business-based activities and replacing them with these creative ones it doesn’t matter what the participants do in their day job, or what rank they are, as this format creates a level playing field. “Because One Day Anthem is creativity-based, I feel it fosters a more natural team spirit which is, after all, what a team building day is all about!” Chairman of North Shields Chamber of Commerce Miles Walton said: “There are so many benefits of team-building, but in this case the business will also end up with something that can be used for marketing, and any methods like this to attract customers to a business are a good thing. “This seems like a really unusual and innovative way of helping businesses to get people through the door.” For more information on One Day Anthem, head to www.onedayanthem.com or search @OneDayAnthem on social media.

HEALTHY PETS ARE HAPPY PETS! AS A PREVIEW OF OUR NEW REGULAR COLUMN ON PET CARE AND ADVICE, WE’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE FRANCES GRAY WHO OWNS AND RUNS VETS4PETS NORTH TYNESIDE VETERINARY PRACTICE
T
here’s a well-worn saying that ‘a dog – or indeed a cat – is for life not Christmas’ and that is very much the maxim of Frances and her colleagues who run their practice from the old church at the top of Rake Lane and Barnstable Road.
Between them Frances and her team believe that a well-looked-after and cared for pet is very much part of the family circle and deserves to be treated as such. Which is why they are so keen to offer owners advice and assistance from the time they welcome a puppy, kitten or another small animal into their homes through to a pet’s on-going care and treatment during its lifetime. Vets4Pets North Tyneside is run very much as a family business with continuity of care and clinical freedom being provided by a compact qualified team including Frances, her veterinary surgeon colleagues Gayle, Rachael and Shona. There is a strong nurse team lead by Claire and Angela with a very supportive reception team headed up by Lauren. Simon, Frances husband is the Practice Manager. Frances qualified as a vet at Edinburgh University and her first job was very much in the James Herriott ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ mould at a practice in Penrith including gaining plenty of experience in lambing and calving. These are fond memories and gave Frances a fantastic perspective on life as a vet but the cold nights on call and vast area she had to cover whilst managing a family pushed her in to the small animal world. After Cumbria Frances moved to the PDSA clinic on the outskirts of Newcastle. Living in Longhorsley at the time and bringing up her daughter Natasha, Frances took the decision to be a local vet within the Morpeth area. Working for another local practice Frances built up a fantastic, trusted client base and a strong reliable reputation within veterinary circles. Frances was head hunted by the Vets4Pets and offered the opportunity to buy her own Vets4Pets in North Tyneside. Through hard work, determination and that all important compassion, 40 40

Through hard work, determination and that all important compassion, caring and love for animals Vets4Pets North Tyneside is thriving
caring and love for animals North Tyneside is thriving. In 2016 Frances was asked to provide the same principles and apply them to Vets4Pets Morpeth. Frances and the team have embedded themselves in the both communities bringing the same vision and values across both practices. The location in North Tyneside is convenient as the practice is roadside, with ample free parking for clients. The state-of-the-art practice is well equipped to deal with the routine day-to-day care of pets but also has its own operating theatre, digital x-ray unit, ultrasound, endoscopy, pharmacy and in-house laboratory for animals needing more specialist treatment. They have an Orthopaedic surgeon who supports them fully and offers that all important expertise for more demanding cases. Frances and her team are also more than happy to meet and talk with pet owners seeking advice in looking after their animals including guidance on diets and they can offer a range of healthcare plans aimed at making essential routine treatment more affordable perhaps through monthly payment schemes. As part of their vet in the community project for 2018 and beyond, we are looking to work with likeminded groups. If you are interested in working with us please contact Simon (Practice Manager). The Vets4Pets team in North Tyneside will now be contributing regular articles on pet care and advice in ABC magazines.

HUSBAND AND WIFE PR TEAM CELEBRATE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR ‘ACCIDENTAL’ BUSINESS A husband and wife team are celebrating the fifth anniversary of their successful PR business which they say happened accidentally.
R
usbyMedia, based in North Shields, was established by Frankie Rusby following the birth of daughter Matilda.
The former journalist, who had been a reporter at BBC South Today and The Portsmouth News, was on maternity leave when she was asked by a friend to help give his business a boost through the media. Fast-forward a year and Frankie, husband Jake and Matilda had moved from Portsmouth to Tynemouth where Frankie set up RusbyMedia, providing PR for a range of clients, gaining coverage locally and nationally in print, radio and television media. Jake quit his job to came on board two years later, adding his own skills and experience in national news reporting, broadcasting, social media and photography. Frankie, 35, said: “It is amazing to look back at the last five years and think about what we have achieved, both as a business and a family. I feel so lucky to be doing something I love and feel so passionate about. “As a journalist I was always very focused and driven, and naturally I am a planner, but RusbyMedia wasn’t planned – it just happened organically. “I fell in love with PR while doing it on maternity leave, it incorporated everything I loved about being a journalist – writing, highlighting success stories, and meeting different and interesting people. “I never imagined that Jake and I would, or even could, 44
work together, but the dynamic is great and we feel we have achieved so much together. What we offer is a unique kind of PR, we offer a service that is passionate, professional and personal.” Jake and Frankie now have a range of clients they work with on a regular basis including Smile For Life Children’s Charity, inflatable obstacle course Gung-Ho!, casting agent NE1 4.TV, The North Shields Chamber of Trade, arts venue The Exchange and comedians Danny Adams and Clive Webb. Jake also offers photography and video to clients, as part of his skillset. The 33-year-old said: “Both Frankie and I got into journalism to make a difference, and thankfully that is what we are able to do now with RusbyMedia. "We work with some very talented, passionate people across the region, and further afield, promoting some incredible businesses and helping to draw attention to the work of some truly life-changing charities. "I could never have imagined when we got together that over a decade down the line we would become colleagues and business partners, but now that we are there is no-one that I'd rather work with." The couple now balance their work with raising a family and have son Zachary, who is two, as well as five-yearold Matilda.
