NEWS FROM WALLSEND
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
BUSINESSES MEET TO PROMOTE WALLSEND
A new plan to boost jobs and trade in Wallsend is being developed following a number of meetings of business leaders in Wallsend who have collectively decided to set up the Wallsend Chamber with the objectives of boosting jobs, economic activity and to help to develop plans to make Wallsend an attractive place to live, work and visit. Representatives from over 30 local businesses are now involved and decided to form the Wallsend Chamber. It consists of businesses, colleges and voluntary groups and will agree key priorities, lobby policy makers, and alert the public through events, activities and social media all centred on Wallsend. David Bavaird, Chair of North Tyneside Business Forum commentated “it is essential that every town in North Tyneside has a voice for their businesses and to date there has been no established business organisation in Wallsend and I am pleased to support the Wallsend Chamber.’ The Wallsend Chamber of Trade & Commerce is facilitated by North Tyneside Business Forum. The next meeting is on Friday 16th March at 8am at Segedunum. To register your interest call 0191 643 6000 or email business.forum@northtyneside.gov.uk. 6
WALLSEND TOWN HALL BOOMING
The Chamber were delighted to hold their second meeting at the Wallsend Town Hall Business Centre with members having the opportunity to see first- hand the exciting and impressive developments at the Grade II listed building. Commentating on recent developments Martin Pearce Director at the Town Hall Business Centre commented ‘We are very pleased to be members of the Chamber and to announce that we have hit 100% occupancy. Opening up the building to around 30 businesses, we have helped to create around 250 new jobs in our local community. Following on from the success, and to keep up with demand, we are now developing another two sections in Wallsend, the old Fire Station and part of the Old Swimming baths. These will add around another 15 new offices of various sizes and will have the potential to generate another 100 jobs. As well as these exciting re-developments there is more growth planned. We have brought two new buildings in the Northeast to replicate what we have here in Wallsend as well as the launch of our new wedding venue at the Town Hall’. For more information on the Wallsend Town Hall visit their website www.townhallchambers.com .

COLLEGE BRIDGING THE GAP FORUM HELPING CUSTOMERS
The Forum Shopping Centre are always looking at events and activities for customers, and the centre is very responsive to the needs of their customers and understands that for some people with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), sensory or additional needs, a visit to a shopping centre can be a daunting experience. Therefore, to help make their visit as enjoyable as possible, the centre plans to host a 'quiet hour' each month, where the centre will turn the music off in the mall, as overwhelming noise can act as a common barrier, which stops individuals with sensory or additional needs accessing the centre. For further details on when the Forum's Centre's first quiet hour is to take place and to see the events at the centre please visit their Facebook pagewww.facebook. com/forumshoppingwallsend
WHAT DID THE ROMANS EVER DO FOR US?
Well in Wallsend they gave us the borough’s only World Heritage Site and a multi-award-winning museum which attracts tourists from across the country and abroad, plus walkers of the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail. Segedunum Roman Fort is also a great venue for the local community and businesses – with the café, rooms to hire, free parking, themed birthday parties, the impressive annual fireworks display and much more. 2017 has been a significant year for Hadrian’s Wall the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian becoming Emperor, leading to his decision to build the 73 mile long Wall. It’s also been the 30th anniversary of Hadrian’s Wall (including of course, Segedunum) being inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s certainly been a good year for Segedunum with the hosting of a major part of the Wall-wide Hadrian’s Cavalry exhibition, described by the Telegraph as one of the top 20 things to see in the world this year! 2017 also saw the installation of the stunning new centurion sculpture, Sentius Tectonicus. So, does that mean the celebrations have finished and the party’s over? Not at all. The party is just getting started as the venue gears up for its 20th birthday in 2020, as well as the 2022 1900th anniversary of Hadrian’s Wall being built. Geoff Woodward, Museum Manager said, ‘There have been some big improvements at Segedunum recently thanks to £500,000 from the Treasury as part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative. We’re now finalising an exciting programme for 2018 which will include more stunning high profile loans, engaging events and further developments. I think the Romans would be proud that Segedunum, which translates as ‘strong fort’, continues to live up to its name, going from strength to strength.’ For more information about Segedunum go to www. segedunumromanfort.org.uk
Chamber members Newcastle College Energy Academy at Wallsend is bridging the skills gap in the local area to meet the need of its industry partners. The Wallsend area is experiencing a shortage of workers with relevant welding skills to meet the needs of current business commitments. The Energy Academy has stepped in to meet this demand by offering a City & Guilds Level 1 Award in MIG Welding free to the unemployed. Based on the north bank of the Tyne, the Energy Academy provides a centre of innovation, training and development for the renewable energy and subsea sectors. The Energy Academy delivers qualifications from Level 2 through to foundation degree level in renewable energy technologies, manufacturing and maintenance, welding & fabrication, NEBOSH Occupational Health & Safety as well as apprenticeships. With its state of the art welding facilities in the heart of industry on the Tyne, the Energy Academy also offers coded welding qualifications in conjunction with The Welding Institute to develop skills even further to meet the exacting standards that industry requires. The Energy Academy team has already identified 10 candidates from the local area to meet the skills shortage and training is underway. These candidates will have the option to further enhance their skills in welding & fabrication with additional courses already run by the Academy.
CHAMBER WELCOME SAFE PLACES
Wallsend Jeweller Keith Barnard, who owns and runs Godfrey Barnard Jewellers within the Wallsend shopping forum, was the first Safe Place venue within Wallsend. Keith, along with his staff team has completed an introductory session with Anthony Howe, Safe Places project officer. The introductory session explains what a Safe Place is as well as the benefits of these within the community. The session also includes the process that Staff should follow if any member of the Safe Place scheme needs their support. The Scheme has been introduced into North Tyneside in order to provide a network of Safe Place venues for any individual who feels vulnerable whenever they are out and about in their community. The Safe Place venue displays a nationally recognised Safe Place logo, members who may need to use Safe Places in the future will receive a key ring and an information card on which they write the contact phone number of two people they know and trusted. If ever the individuals felt unsafe, afraid or lost they can go into any of the Safe Place venues and give a member of staff their key ring or information card, the member of staff will reassure the individual and phone one of the contact numbers. The Safe Place scheme has been designed to help build self resilience as individuals can now find support in a growing network of Safe Places. This also builds community resilience as the various businesses within the community help vulnerable people. For more information on this important initiative visit the Safe Place website www.sign-nt.co.uk/Safe-Places/ 7

Her number one album ‘The Architect’ is currently riding high in the charts, with eight weeks in the top ten and is approaching 250,000 copies sold. Fans will be hoping to hear hits including ‘Stone Cold Sober’, ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’, ‘Crybaby’ and ‘Picking up the Pieces’. looking forward to watching her perform her hits in the special and picturesque setting of Tynemouth Priory and Castle. “The Mouth of the Tyne Festival attracts around 100,000 visitors each year, which always provides a huge boost the local economy and increases tourism to the borough. With such a high calibre act confirmed for the festival and more exciting announcements to come, I’m sure this year will be no different.” Tickets priced at £40 plus booking fees, will go on sale from 9am on Friday 2 February at www. seetickets.com and www.ticketmaster.co.uk. The festival, now in its 14th year, has hosted a range of artists including Paul Weller, Elbow, James Bay, The Script, James Morrison and Bryan Ferry. SKATE PARK EXTENSION IS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR LOCAL YOUNGSTERS
A
skate park is set to attract even more thrill-seekers as work starts to extend the much-loved facility.
Enjoyed by thousands of young people each year, the North Tyneside Council-owned skate park on Howdon Lane, North Shields, is being extended, with a new area catering specifically for BMX riders and more advanced skateboarders. It was the idea of a group of young people who work with local charity Phoenix Detached Youth Project and made possible thanks to investment from North Tyneside Council and £50,000 of funding from Suez Communities Trust. Speaking about the project, North Tyneside Council’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Bruce Pickard said: “We are delighted to be able to enhance and invest in this popular facility for the benefit of the local community. “I must thank Phoenix Detached Youth Project and the young people it works with – without their ideas, input and enthusiasm this project would not have been possible. I would also like to thank Suez Communities Trust for providing the funding to help us improve the skate park.” Phoenix Detached Youth Project is a charity that works with 13 to 25-year-old in and around the Meadow Well area. Project manager, Mike Burgess said: “This was a dream of the group after visiting Scotland in 2014 with local BMX Bandits from North 16
Shields, to have our own local challenging BMX Bowl, the Phoenix Bowl. “The group created a design which was presented to councillors and the Elected Mayor, and worked on bids. Without their commitment and support, as well as North Tyneside Council staff working in partnership with local young people, such an amazing facility would not be possible, or funding from SUEZ Communities Trust “I am proud of what local young people have achieved with our support, we never gave up hope after four years of work behind the scenes, dreams do come true, and anything is possible.” A group of young people were on hand at the skate park to mark the start of the work. Carl, aged 24, who is part of local group BMX Bandits, added: “We started a project four years ago and never thought this would happen. We thought it was just a dream. “Luke Johnston from the Phoenix Detached Youth Project has continued to believe in us and we can not thank him and the team enough, for keeping us going. “We can not wait to ride the bowl and support other young people to learn how to ride the bowl, and this is the just start of using an amazing venue to host regular events, this will give young people something exciting and fun to do and will help them take the right path in life.“ The skate park is currently closed as the extension gets underway and will reopen in the spring.

THE TREATMENT OF
HAY FEVER
WITH ACUPUNCTURE
I
Feras Jerjis, Traditional Acupuncturist at Heaton Acupuncture Clinic shares his experience in the treatment of hayfever
have a very vivid memory of sitting in a small lecture room at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York more than twenty years ago, listening to a lecture about seasonal allergens and how the body copes with them. When the lecturer noticed a slight lull in the class’s concentration, he asked for a volunteer who suffered from hay fever. The volunteer was a local shiatsu practitioner who exhibited the typical puffiness and redness in her eyes, combined with the occasional stream from her nostrils. Within a few minutes he had asked her several questions, explained what he was going to do and proceeded to do it. He went back to his lecture and after ten minutes or so the class’s attention was distracted yet again as we heard her utter the words “I can breathe through my nose now”. Twenty years down the line as an acupuncturist I am still amazed at how quickly treatment can work for something like hay fever. In our clinic we routinely use acupuncture to calm down an over excited immune system and work with people who often need to stay away from animal fur, house mites, feathers, cut grass,
hay and rapeseed fields. For some people though there is a morbid acceptance that they need to be on antihistamines for a long time, antihistamines tend to work very well in the short term, however they work by suppressing the symptoms and do not get to the route of the issue. With acupuncture we seek to establish balance rather than suppress symptoms, so typically a consultation would take an hour or so whereby we ask lots of questions until there is clarity about the best way to treat the person. So, as we head towards the hay fever season it is useful, at least for some people, to know that they have acupuncture as an additional option. For further information call 0191 2871042 or visit www.heatonacupuncture.co.uk.

EASTER BISCUITS Biscuits aren’t always for dunking, sometimes they’re there to look pretty too (and then devouring). Easter is the perfect occasion for amazingly decorated Easter biscuits, and this fabulous recipe from Renshaw will make you want to start the Easter baking right away. Fancy yourself as a little decorating whizz? Whether you’re an expert biscuit decorator or not, this easy step by step recipe will wow all of your guests this Easter.
INGREDIENTS • 180g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 55g sugar • 125g butter • Icing sugar for dusting METHOD
FOR DECORATING • Ready to Roll Icing in various • • •
colours e.g. Green, Pink, Yellow, Blue, White Royal Icing Icing sugar Food colouring (optional)
1. Pre-heat the oven to 190 degrees. 2. In a large bowl, sieve the flour and add the sugar and butter. 3. Mix this together and begin to rub/knead. 4. Once your pasty has formed, set it aside. 5. Dust your work surface with some flour and roll out the pastry. 6. Once the pasty has been rolled, cut out some circle shapes using the cutters. 7. Place the pasty on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes, or until cooked. 8. Once the biscuits are cooked, put aside to cool. Do not decorate the biscuits until they have completely cooled. 9. Dust your work surface with some icing sugar to prevent the icing from sticking. 10. Pull off some coloured icing and begin to knead and pin it. 11. Shape it into a ball and then roll it out. 12. Cut circle shapes out using your cutters. 13. Roll the circle you have just cut out into an oval shape. 14. Put the icing on top of the biscuit and smooth out using the flat edge smoother. 15. Take out 2 table spoons of royal icing and put it into a piping bag (if the icing is too hard, add a little water, give it a stir, then pop it back into the piping bag). 16. Decorate a pattern of your choice onto the iced biscuit with the icing bag. 17. If you want to use coloured icing for decorating, put a table spoon of icing into a bowl and add a couple of drops of food colouring, then put it into a piping bag. 18. Use a little water and a clean paintbrush to smooth down the piped icing.
Enjoy, and Happy Easter! 28

THE IMPORTANCE OF
DE-CLUTTERING & CREATING A RELAXING HOME
W
ith most of us today balancing the demands of increasingly busy work and family lives, our homes have never been more valued as places of sanctuary and enjoyment.
So, it’s important that your home feels relaxing and calm, something that Helen Ross, owner of award winning North Tyneside domestic housekeeping business Bright & Beautiful, knows all about. Our home is our place of rest and refuge and somewhere to indulge our love of beautiful things. So, it’s important to look after them properly and our Bright & Beautiful professional housekeepers do this in two ways – by using the very best natural products and by following a meticulous cleaning process.
CREATING A SANCTUARY
Helen says: “We make each client’s home feel like a welcoming and soothing place to be, from the minute they walk through the door. To achieve that we use high quality, eco-friendly products that clean effectively, give a luxury finish and smell beautiful. Our attention to detail is meticulous – from hotel standard bed making to getting windows gleaming and streak free.”
DE-CLUTTER AND DE-STRESS
Helen says: “It’s been proven that clutter and mess around our homes can make us feel unwell and unhappy. Just as we detox our bodies, so we work with our clients to bring order to chaos, tidying and cleaning their homes,
and taking care of the ironing. For me a tidy house and a tidy mind definitely go together!”
CHERISHING YOUR HOME
We are seeing a real resurgence in the popularity of wood in the home, from antiques and mid-century classics to modern collectibles and they are wonderful pieces to reflect your taste and style . Wood is a naturally porous material that allows more dust and moisture in. So for older wood we always use an oil based cleaner, usually almond oil, instead of wax to care for wood pieces. Oil loosens the dirt as well as bringing out the natural sheen and keeps the wood looking good for years to come.
SHINE BRIGHT
The popularity of glass and mirrored furniture in our homes has presented a whole range of new cleaning issues! Just like glossy kitchens, they look fantastic but one fingerprint or smear and the effect is ruined. The key is to use products that really suit the surfaces so for glass in particular, we like to use a white vinegar based cleaner – a natural and very effective product.
RELAX AND UNWIND
The secret to Helen’s success is that her clients can relax, knowing that their Bright & Beautiful housekeeping team treat their homes with the utmost respect, operate the highest standards of security and are fully insured. So why not take a leaf out of their book and let someone else look after your home so you can look after yourself?
Bright & Beautiful is an award winning domestic housekeeping service that delivers the highest standards of cleaning, tidying, ironing and laundry. PAINFUL
JOURNEYS With your help, Age UK can ensure hospital transport really works and older people are given the care and support they need.
F
or most of us just having a hospital appointment is enough to worry about, but imagine having to make a long and complicated journey alone, in pain and feeling anxious about not getting there in time. This isn’t good enough, but it doesn’t have to be like this.
Through Age UK North Tyneside’s Painful Journeys campaign, they are calling on people to write to their MP about the difficulties they have faced when travelling to hospital appointments. The Charity’s new report Painful Journeys highlights three key issues facing older people and their families when trying to get to and from their hospital appointments: 1. Long and uncomfortable public transport journeys to and from hospital. Many older people have no option but to rely on public transport to get to their hospital appointments, which can mean difficult and uncomfortable journeys, sometimes involving two or three changes of buses. Around 1 in 4 (25%) of all the
32
bus journeys taken by people aged 65+ are for medical appointments , yet many struggle with inaccessible or irregular bus services. 2. Hospital-provided patient transport is of patchy quality and a postcode lottery. Overstretched, poorly co-ordinated services in many areas mean that despite feeling very unwell, older people are picked up hours before their appointment and left waiting alone for hours until they are picked up for their return journey. Patients are often unable to travel with a companion which can be very distressing for them, particularly if they are in a wheelchair or have dementia.
“
Many older people are reliant on family or friends to drive them to hospital, which can have a significant impact if people have to take time off work, and hospital car parking can be pricey
3. Significant extra costs for older people and their families. Many older people are reliant on family or friends to drive them to hospital, which can have a significant impact if people have to take time off work, and hospital car parking can be pricey. Alternatively some older people have to pay for private taxis, often with drivers who are not trained to deal with people with health or mobility issues. For patients in wheelchairs, specialist vehicles need to be hired for each journey, sometimes at high cost. For more information you can visit www.ageuk.org.uk/ painfuljourneys, or to provide any feedback or comments about individual experiences please contact Age UK North Tyneside on 0191 2808484 (option 1).

ould you like to spend the summer working on some of Tyne and Wear’s most popular beaches? The RNLI is searching for new recruits and has opened applications for beach lifeguards and face-to-face fundraisers.
Both roles are essential in reducing the number of people who drown on the North East coast, and keep people safe by providing safety advice to holidaymakers. Successful applicants receive first-class training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques. Ben Mitchell, RNLI area lifesaving manager, said: “Working as a lifeguard has got to be one of the best summer jobs - you get to call the beach your office for a start. But, far more importantly than that, you are there to make sure the public enjoy it in the safest possible way. The RNLI provides local summer patrols at Sandhaven, Whitley Bay North and South, Cullercoats, Tynemouth Longsands and King Edward’s Bay amongst other local beaches. Ben said the role is demanding and will require commitment, skill and a clear head. He added: “We’re looking for people with courage, determination and the ability to draw on their training and make the right decision if someone’s life is in danger. It is an incredibly rewarding role.” Face-to-face fundraisers will work alongside lifeguards to provide beach visitors with important safety advice. They will play a vital role in saving lives by educating the public on risks at the coast. Applicants need to be dynamic and act as a positive ambassador - encouraging support for this lifesaving charity is just one of the things the fundraisers will do over the summer. Callum Moffat, RNLI face-to-face fundraising manager, said: “A good fundraiser generally has to be friendly and relaxed, but also energetic, able to talk to anyone and be passionate about what they do. We provide quality training which ensures new fundraisers feel confident and capable in the role.” To apply for one of the roles visit summerjobs.rnli.org or search for #BestSummerJob on Facebook and Twitter.

‘FRIENDS OF NORTH TYNESIDE’
ARE MAKING A BIG IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY
SUPPORT AND TRAINING FOR CHARITIES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS
C
ommunity groups, voluntary organisations and charities are being given the chance to meet face to face with funders at North Tyneside VODA’s Funding Fair on Thursday 15 March.
Taking place at the Linskill Centre in North Shields, the fair will give groups the chance to make appointments with up to four of the region’s top grantmaking trusts and funders, tell them about their projects and work, and receive one-to-one advice about putting in a strong application. Funders who will be in attendance include Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, Greggs Foundation and Big Lottery Fund. Groups are encouraged to read the description of each funder before making an appointment, to ensure that their project or work fits with the funders priorities. The Funding Fair is an annual event held by North Tyneside VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency), a registered charity which provides free and low-cost support, advice and training to the voluntary sector in North Tyneside. Frank Gillender, VODA’s Funding Adviser said: “This is always one of our busiest and most popular events, and it’s easy to see why. The Funding Fair offers community groups and voluntary organisations the rare chance to get face-to-face with some of our region’s top funders, the people who actually make the decision about grant-making. We always get reports of funding successes following these 36
events and now, when competition for grant funding is more fierce than ever, it’s important for groups to be really clear about their work so that funders know the real impact that they’re making on the people and communities they work with.” Places and appointments at the event MUST be booked in advance using VODA’s booking system – see www.voda.org.uk for more information or telephone 0191 643 2626.

The Funding Fair is just one of the ways which VODA helps local groups and charities to develop and sustain their activities. As well as a website which features a range of downloadable guides and resources, VODA also runs a programme of training courses and workshops designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of the voluntary and community sector. Through VODA’s Sector Connector project, which brokers support and advice from local businesses for the benefit of the voluntary and community sector, there are also several free workshops being delivered on topics such as printing and design (delivered by yourPrintDepartment on 8 March) and Search Engine Optimisation (delivered by Jackdaw Web Design on 12 April). Based in North Shields, yourPrintDepartment has been involved in the Sector Connector project for several years now; Rob Gibbons explains how their involvement has changed the way his company does business: “We found that allowing our staff to spend some time helping groups understand what makes an effective publication pays enormous dividends in terms of those groups then being able to give us a clearer brief and achieve their own goals. It also benefits the professional development of our team and enables yourPrintDepartment to play a real part in making the community stronger.” VODA are always keen to hear from local businesses that want to give something back to their community by offering to deliver a workshop or provide advice and support to voluntary and community groups and organisations. Visit the Sector Connector section of VODA’s website to find out how to get involved. TEETH STRAIGHTENING AT SHIREMOOR DENTAL PRACTICE Teeth straightening used to be a slow and painful process, but modern solutions at Shiremoor Dental Practice could have you smiling within months.
I
f you are embarrassed about your teeth that are not straight, or you have large gaps between your teeth, modern orthodontics (teeth straightening) now offers a range of solutions. Also known as discreet or invisible braces, teeth can be straightened and smiles aligned in a matter of months with excellent aesthetic results. Invisible braces are a popular choice with adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months on end. The technology behind invisible orthodontics is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases. Some systems are completely removable, allowing you to take the aligners out when eating or drinking. Other systems have clear brackets and tooth coloured wire,
making them hardly noticeable. All orthodontic treatment requires good oral hygiene habits by the patient and regular visits to the practice for check-ups and adjustments.
How much does it cost?
Compared to other orthodontic treatments Quick Straight Teeth is one of the most cost effective. This is due to the shorter treatment time required. Prices can start from as little as £1399, which includes your brace, your retainer and teeth whitening. For those patients who proceed to treatment we offer competitive prices and also a selection of affordable finance options.
Does it hurt?
As with many orthodontic treatments you may notice some slight discomfort- particularly when initially fitted or tightened. This is completely normal and can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

It is recommended that you wear a retainer following treatment to stop your teeth from relapsing to their original position. TIME TO
QUIT?
With No Smoking Day right around the corner (7 March), here are some tips to help you give up for good
W
ith a glass of wine on a Friday night, or on your lunch break with colleagues, if you’re one of the 10 million Brits who smoke, you’ll know there are plenty of opportunities to light up.
But, according to research, it turns out 70% of smokers want to quit. By quitting you’ll be improving your own health by dramatically reducing your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and a variety of cancers. You’ll feel better, and have more money to spend on other things that you enjoy.
PRACTICAL TIPS TO HELP YOU QUIT
Make a date to give up - and stick to it! Statistics have shown you’re more likely to succeed when you have a date in mind. Throw away all your tobacco, lighters and ashtrays. Make smoking a hassle, so there’s less chance of you lighting up. Make a plan. Think about what could help you stop smoking and have it ready before the date you plan to stop. Champix, a tablet that reduces the urge to smoke, is a popular choice and can be taken over eight weeks. Patches, gum and hypnotherapy are other options. Download or order a stop smoking booklet from www.bhf.org.uk/publications/smoking/stop-smoking Get support and let your family and friends know that you're quitting. Some people find that talking to friends and relatives who have stopped can be helpful. You can also talk to your doctor, practice nurse or pharmacist about what support is available to you. Get Moving. Most of us are guilty of not being active enough, whether it’s passing up the gym for a night in, or taking the car to the shops instead of walking. But exercise isn’t just good for our bodies, it’s good for turning down those cravings too. “There’s strong evidence that doing any sort of physical activity that gets your heart rate up reduces your desire for a cigarette,” says Mike Knapton from the British 44
Heart Foundation. “People often associate smoking with sedentary behaviour, so exercise is a great distraction, especially for those who want to get fit too,” he adds Keep busy to help take your mind off cigarettes. Try to change your routine, and avoid the shop where you normally buy cigarettes. Giving up smoking comes down to psychology and pinpointing what your triggers are – and how to avoid them. It’s recommended you make a note of the times and places you’re either craving or having a cigarette. That way, you can address it. If you tend to smoke after a meal, make sure you do something else after eating. If you smoke when your hands are idle, read a magazine or take up a hobby. Avoid booze and coffee. Lots of smokers routinely light up when they’re having a drink, or their morning coffee.“If you’ve developed an association between coffee or alcohol and smoking, you’ll experience an increased temptation to light up in these situations once you stop smoking,” says Professor Peter Hajek from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine. But this is temporary, and once you get used to drinking without smoking, the association and temptation‘extinguishes’. Finally...Treat yourself. If you can, use the money you're saving by not smoking to buy yourself something special.
