THINKING ABOUT THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR CAREER? Careers event to take place aimed at those living in NE28

W

allsend Inspires is a brand new careers event aimed at those living in the NE28 area.

The purpose of the event is to support people to make informed decisions about the next stage of their education, training or their future career by bringing together businesses, institutions and organisations from all sectors. The event will provide anyone in the family with the best possible information and guidance to enable every person, whether young or old to identify routes into work. There are now over 5,000 businesses based in North Tyneside - an increase from 3,890 in the last five years. According to recent council report, those businesses provide 81,900 jobs, which is over 10,000 more jobs than in 2012. It is important that residents in the local area benefit from these additional jobs and that we develop a skills supply that underpins business growth and talent and retain this supply in the region. To support access to these opportunities, the event will have a specific focus on growing industries and local opportunities.

6

The event will consist of: Local businesses - providing information on what career opportunities are available now and in the future including apprenticeship information Training providers - offering information about work based learning Colleges and Universities - providing information on further and higher education courses and routes Information areas - answering your work, education and apprenticeship questions relating to travel, benefits, child care, finance and more.

• • • •

The event is being organised by local schools, Burnside Business and Enterprise College and Churchill Community College, North Tyneside Learning Trust, North Tyneside Council, North Tyneside Business Forum, Wallsend Childrens Community, Tyne Metropolitan College and training providers Barnados and NYA and is aimed not only at those currently in education but also those returning back to work, finding work for the first time and those interested in a change of career. The event takes place at Tyne Metropolitan College between 10.00am – 1.30pm on Saturday 26th October. Anyone is welcome!

SUNDAY FOR SAMMY IS 20! TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FOR SUNDAY FOR SAMMY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWS AT NEWCASTLE UTILITA ARENA

SUPER SUNDAY: The shows return to the arena in 2020 with a host of stars

F

ollowing the astonishing success of the 2018 sell-out, Sunday for Sammy returns to the Newcastle Utilita Arena for two spectacular 20th Anniversary shows. The concerts, locally dubbed The Geordie Command Performance, are held every two years in memory of Geordie actor Sammy Johnson who died suddenly in 1999. The 2018 shows, the first to be held at the Arena, were hailed as the best ever by fans who travelled from all over the North East and beyond to be part of the fun. Sunday for Sammy, which was staged at Newcastle City Hall for 16 years, has become one of the ‘must-see’ events in the regional entertainment calendar. Over 10,000 fans flocked to Newcastle Arena for the 2018 show and the organisers are expecting another speedy sell-out in 2020. Tim Healy, Denise Welch, Mark Knopfler, Kevin Whately, Charlie Hardwick, Jimmy Nail, Jill Halfpenny, Jason Cook, Timothy Spall, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Christopher Fairbank, Mattie Healy, Stephen Tomkinson, John Miles, Angie Lonsdale,

VERA: Brenda Blethyn brought the house down in the 2018 show

10

Joe McElderry, Brendan Healy, Donna Aire, Ant and Dec, Chelsea Halfpenny, Billy Mitchell, Brendan Foster, Pam Royle, Bob Moncur, Julia Tobin and many, many more have previously given up their time to take part in the show. The cast list is never revealed beforehand and every show is packed with surprises. None bigger than the reception given to actress Brenda Blethyn who brought the house down with her appearance as Vera in the 2018 show. The award-winning actress said: ‘Never in my entire career has an audience welcomed my appearance on stage as wildly and enthusiastically as the audience for Sunday For Sammy welcomed VERA. It was deafening and I’ll cherish the memory of it for ever. The warmth and enthusiasm for the entire show was overwhelming. Thank you. I’m so happy and honoured to have taken part.’ Chairman of the Sunday for Sammy Trust, Tim Healy commented: “It’s hard to believe that it will be twenty years since the first Sunday for Sammy. The show has become a part of our lives and also part of North East Culture. It makes me so proud to know that an idea that Jimmy Nail and I dreamed up to maintain the memory of our pal Sammy has so far raised over £530K to support young performers and creatives in the North East.” Show producer Ray Laidlaw added: “The Newcastle Utilita Arena is now the natural home for Sunday for Sammy. The 2018 show was a huge hit with both the audience and the performers. The success of the 2018 concert DVD, which reached No 3 in the UK charts, has helped to spread the word even further. We’re looking forward to another spectacular event. Every year, the tickets sell faster so I’d urge fans not to leave it till the last minute to guarantee your part in the 20th anniversary shows.” Tickets are on-sale from the Utilita Arena and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. TIPS FOR A CLUTTER FREE KITCHEN Professional decluttering and organising expert Cath Hindle shares her 8 top tips to get your kitchen clutter under control.

T

here is a famous William Morris quote that I return to everyday when I’m helping people to declutter: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Apply this saying to any space that you want to organise and you won’t go far wrong but it is especially pertinent in the kitchen. Kitchens are receptacles for no end of clutter. Gadgets, electricals, old crockery, drawers of screwdrivers, old letters and bank statements, lightbulbs, blue tac and string; all of which are hidden behind cupboard doors. Cupboards are great storage but can also become easily cluttered and full if not sorted regularly which means you don’t make full use of or get the most benefit from the things you need or love.

Here’s some top tips for keeping your kitchen fully functioning and clutter free: When decluttering any room, it’s useful to think about the stuff that you use most often. So, in terms of the kitchen think utensils, pans, crockery, glasses and store the things that you use most next to the area that you use them. Mugs above the kettle, pans near the hob etc. Whilst on the subject of mugs – if you don’t want to drink

• 12

Cath Hindle

your tea out of it, get rid!! Overstuffed mug cupboards bring no joy. Lose a few chipped and ugly ones and see how you feel. By thinking about the stuff you do use (see point 1), you will automatically wheedle out the stuff you don’t. Then, separate the things you use occasionally or want to keep from the stuff you don’t. Bin, scrap or pass on the unwanted items immediately. Pass it on groups on Facebook are great for this as are some charity shops. British Heart Foundation take electrical appliances (I once had a client who got rid of 6 George Forman grills!!) Now think about how you use your kitchen. Do you entertain? How many people can you fit round the table? No point keeping a casserole dish for 12 if you never invite folks round and don’t like stew for example. As a general rule, I suggest keeping double the amount your household needs. There is four of us at Clear the Clutter HQ so we have 8 of most things (except bowls - I love bowls – see good old William Morris quote above). A good tip is use to use small baskets or take away boxes to store things like clip its, bottle openers etc. They still fit in

your drawers but allow you to group things. This also works under the kitchen sink where dishwasher tablets and tea towels can disappear forever. Use large baskets that you can pull out so you can see your washing up liquid from your oven cleaner. Speaking of Tupperware, if space allows, stack the bottoms in one drawer and the lids in the drawer above or stack the lids in an empty tub. This makes them much easier to pair up. Finally, don’t forget your food. Regularly check for out of date stuff. Don’t put new shopping in front of old stuff. That’s how you end up with lots of corned beef in the back of the cupboard. Store like with like and if possible, stack tins. If you cook with herbs and spices, use a shoe box to store the jars in and write the name on the top of each one so you can easily locate what you need.

RISING SUN VOLUNTEERS CREATE A NEW WILDLIFE POND

Regular visitor Lily Rose, who the pond is named after

V

olunteers have waded in to transform an old swamp into a colourful pond and wildlife haven in North Tyneside.

The Friends of Rising Sun County Park took it upon themselves to resurrect the neglected pond and overgrown garden, which is close to the visitor centre at the heart of the 400-acre beauty spot. With funding from the Banks Group and support from North Tyneside Council, as well as several local firms, they dug out the 20ft x 30ft pond, replaced the lining, built a new fence, improved the access and planted thousands of bulbs. They then set a challenge for the community to come up with a name for the pond and when the family of seven-year-old Lily Rose put forward some suggestions, they found the perfect name was right under their noses. Lily, who visits the Rising Sun Country Park regularly with her family and loves spotting newts at the pond, was overjoyed to have the pond named after her. Her mum, Gemma Steel, a primary school teacher from Whitley Bay, said: “We entered the competition and sent in some suggestions for naming the main pond. They weren’t chosen but Lily’s name was chosen and now it feels as though we won. It’s the perfect name for a natural space. The Rising Sun is brilliant for families and we always have a good day out when we come here.” The area is now flourishing with bees, butterflies and amphibians and has become a popular destination for school groups. 16

Keith Page, Secretary of the Friends group, said: “The restored Lily Rose pond was named by a young lady from Whitley Bay and it was chosen because it was such an appropriate and lovely name. She is absolutely chuffed to bits and the fact that she is from the borough and a regular visitor makes it even more special. The pond had to be completely dug out and everything thrown away. The lining had perished and over time it had become a quagmire. It ceased to be a pond. “We’ve had great support from some of the local companies who have come along and helped us with some of the heavy-digging and planting. It’s teambuilding at its best and it’s fantastic to see people taking pride. We’re very pleased with the results. The pond was officially opened by North Tyneside Councillor Carl Johnson, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport. He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, another great community project. We are very fortunate in North Tyneside to have so many groups that really step forward for the local area and transform these spaces for everyone to use and enjoy. People often say the coast is the jewel in the crown of North Tyneside but I always say there are two and the Rising Sun is the other one. If you’ve not been here before, it’s a fabulous space and I recommend people to come and explore it.” For further information about the Friends of the Rising Sun or to lend a helping hand with litter picking, stalls and other activities to raise funds to support wildlife and nature in the park, search ‘Friends of Rising Sun Country Park’ on Facebook.

BRING YOUR POLAROID CAMERA BACK TO LIFE

D

o you have an old Polaroid camera languishing in a cupboard? Now is the perfect time to bring it back to life.

Polaroid Originals is the company that rose from the ashes of the discontinuation of Polaroid instant film in 2008 and is dedicated to analogue instant photography in the original, iconic format. Back then, a number of chemical suppliers that existed solely to provide Polaroid with chemistry for film production went out of business. And over the course of the last decade some of the chemistry used in film production became unavailable for commercial use. Polaroid Originals faced the challenge of reinventing analogue instant photography with the chemistry available, and over the past nine years has been gradually improving the processing and quality of instant film. Launched on September 13th, 2017, the 80th anniversary of the founding of Polaroid, Polaroid Originals makes instant film for Polaroid cameras, and refurbishes vintage cameras so they’re good as new. If you don’t own a vintage Polaroid camera new cameras are available. The OneStep 2 is

18

a new Polaroid camera that blends classic design with contemporary style. It’s inspired by Polaroid’s original OneStep, but updated to create a simple, easy-to-use instant camera that works straight out of the box – just pick up some i-Type instant film and you’re good to go. It’s got a high quality lens and a powerful flash to give you great photos every time, and this newly improved Viewfinder model makes framing your photos even more intuitive than before. Plus with its long-lasting rechargeable battery, you’ll always be ready to shoot, whether you’re on a brief excursion or a journey round the world. Now is the time to reacquaint yourself with instant analogue photography in an increasingly digital world. Photographic retailer, FotoSnaps are your local stockist for Polaroid Originals products. The Wallsend retailer offers a range of colour and black and white film for your vintage Polaroid camera, and they also have the new Polaroid OneStep 2 instant cameras available if you’re interested in starting a new hobby! MAKING SUSTAINABLE GARDENING CHOICES FOR A BLOOMING FUTURE

A

s retailers and consumers, we’re all being tasked with making environmentally responsible decisions to ensure our love of gardening does not cause harm to our delicate ecosystems and planet. There are a some immediate, yet simple changes you can make.

Phacelia are a fantastic source of food for pollinators 20

REDUCE PEAT USE

Whilst peat has long been touted as a nutritious and organic feed for your garden, pressure has been put on the industry to back away from what is seen to be a destructive activity to our natural landscape and wildlife. Along with starting your own compost heap, green manure is a fantastic way to put organic nutrients into the ground – great for raised beds and vegetable patches. Lupins and Phacelia can both be grown from seed, with the added benefit of a striking floral display and fantastic source of food for pollinators such bees and butterflies. They’ll also attract hoverflies that will kill garden pests such as aphids.

Lupins can be grown from seed

Westland’s New Horizon is 100% peat free, natural and sustainable

There are many benefits to buying from your local plant nursery

Our biggest supplier of growing media has released a statement outlining the hard work they are doing to better the industry. Keith Nicholson of Westland Horticulture said, “Now over 70% of total material used in Westland products is non-peat which will be furthered in 2020, headlined by our move to reduce peat content in the UK’s lead[ing] compost, Multi-Purpose with John Innes - Single biggest step in driving the industries peat reduction. We have also already achieved “zero to landfill” in all our facilities and have removed over 800 tonnes of plastic from our product packaging, including growing media.” Look out for Westland’s New Horizon brand – it’s 100% peat free, natural, sustainable and suitable for all indoor and outdoor plants, as well as vegetables.

BUY BRITISH

Buy British for pest control, and even better, local for carbon footprint reduction. When you buy from a local plant nursery you can feel confident knowing that no foreign bugs as diseases will be compromising the health of your plants or the natural wildlife; there is massive reduction in greenhouse gases from transport; having been grown under the same daylight hours as your own

garden with no extreme temperature changes, your plants should be hardier, requiring fewer pesticides, water and fertilizer… with an added bonus that you can ask to speak to the growers of homegrown plants for free in-store to really understand how best to maintain your garden purchases. Whilst garden centres continue to make strides in their sustainable practices, it is the demands of consumer that makes the biggest industry waves and together, all our small improvements should make a huge impact on the environment. At Plantsplus, we have a Shades of Green environmental policy which illustrates our continued effort to respond to environmental and community issues that affect all of our customers, staff and suppliers. Current sustainability projects include: LED Lighting, Photovoltaic panels, Rainwater collection, Electric car charging points, Working towards a digital office, Reduction of plastic pots in our nursery, and Landscaping for wildlife. BLUE PLAQUE TRAIL HONOURS THE WW1 DEAD OF NORTH SHIELDS

A

poignant memorial trail has been created for a North Shields community that suffered devastating losses in the First World War.

Over 100 men from the streets between Linskill Terrace, Tynemouth Road and Park Avenue were either killed during the war of 1914-1918 or died later of their injuries. Dozens of homes have received a blue plaque to identify a soldier who once lived there, as part of a scheme by the Northumbria WW1 Commemoration Project. Now the group have created a memorial trail and published a guide, supported by North Tyneside Council, to ensure the men and the sacrifices of war are never forgotten. Project coordinator Alan Fidler says the memorial is a stark reminder of the price paid by North Tyneside communities during the Great War. “In that triangle of streets 108 men were killed. They don’t all have plaques because a lot of the properties are no longer standing but there are a number who do have plaques who we selected because they had a range of different stories about them. The rate of loss in the borough of Tynemouth was quite phenomenal and the plaques show the scale of that. Almost everyone knew somebody who didn’t come home from the war and we could easily create another four or five trails like this one. “We believe the trail will appeal to people who used to live here or amateur historians, or people who feel deeply affected by these men’s stories. We hope local people 28

and visitors will find the guide interesting as they visit all 18 featured and pause at each home to remember the man represented by the plaque, and read their story as told on our website.” More than 300 plaques have been fitted to homes in the borough since the scheme began in 2014. The 1.5 mile trail begins at the Linskill Centre and takes around 60 minutes to complete. The first plaque is at the home of Scottish writer, Caroline Kemp, on Linskill Terrace. She was inspired to write a poem for Hugh M. Hutchison, a 23-yearold soldier who lived in her house before being fatally wounded in France in 1917. She said: “I looked him up on the database, which is fascinating; lots of people are looking at the blue plaque when they come by. It’s a mixture of sadness but it’s also beautiful to have the memory and remember it and I think Hugh and his family would be very pleased this trail was here.” Other projects by the group include a unique commemorative wall listing the casualties in order of the streets where they lived, and a memorial garden for men whose homes are no longer standing, both of which can be seen at the Linskill Centre. Copies of the guide can be picked up at the Linskill Centre; Keel Row Bookshop; North Shields Customer First Centre – Discover North Tyneside; and the Fishing and Maritime heritage centre on the Quay. Further information about the group’s activities can be found at www.northumbriaworldwarone.co.uk

WHAT’S ON

CHALLENGERS, ARE YOU READY? WALLTOWN WARRIOR IS COMING TO NORTHUMBERLAND NATIONAL PARK!

T

his September, prepare to run, crawl, scramble and slide as the first-ever ‘Walltown Warrior’ event descends on Northumberland!

A brand-new challenge designed to encourage warriors of all ages to get active and have fun in the stunning surrounds of Northumberland National Park, Walltown Warrior is the brainchild of Northumberland National Park Authority, delivered in partnership with Challenge Northumberland. Covering a 3km open course around Walltown Country Park, warriors will encounter obstacles including scramble nets, ninja steps, rope climbs, hay bale towers and even a water slide as they make their way towards the finish line. At the highest point of the course, you can even take a minute to admire the stunning views over the landscape across to Cumbria and the Scottish Borders from the top of an 8 ft climbing frame! The event, which takes place across the weekend of 14-15th September is suitable for all fitness levels from complete beginners to serious athletes. There is no time limit to complete the course, so everyone can go at their own pace to support their team and soak in the atmosphere against the dramatic backdrop of Hadrian’s Wall. “We’re really excited about the launch of our Walltown Warrior challenge event,” said Mandy Roberts, engagement officer at Northumberland National Park Authority. The wide-open spaces and dramatic landscape of our National Park lends itself really well to fun activities 38

which encourage visitors to go and explore either on foot, by bike or on horseback. “With help from Challenge Northumberland, we have created a family-orientated, enjoyable event which will encourage visitors of all ages to get stuck in and experience our National Park in a whole new way!” Neville Duncan, director at Challenge Northumberland, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Northumberland National Park Authority for the first ever Walltown Warrior. We have been working really closely with the Park staff to carefully plan the course around Walltown Country Park, making use of the gradient of the landscape to add to the fun of the challenge. We’re really looking forward to the event and hope that this will be the first of many in the years to come.” Walltown Warrior is the crowning jewel in Northumberland National Park’s newly redeveloped activity programme which also includes guided walks, archery sessions and archaeology expeditions taking place across the summer. With only a limited number of spaces available on each wave across the two days, booking in advance is essential to avoid disappointment. Standard adult entry costs £16 and children aged six and over cost £8. All participants will receive a special Walltown Warrior goody bag and free entry into the Roman Army Museum at Vindolanda. Perfect for a family fun day out or for team building with a group of friends or colleagues, find out more about Walltown Warrior and reserve your place today at: www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/walltownwarrior
