A MERRY TIME
Over the last few years we have seen a new type of pub spring up in local towns around the region - the micro pub. These welcome additions to local high streets offer drinkers a much-welcomed alternative to big chain venues or standard run of the mill pubs. Most micro pubs are independently run and support small local breweries - fantastic for the region as a whole. Here are a selection...
Monkseaton: FRONT STREET TAP HOUSE Earlier this year Monkseaton welcomed the very cool Front Street Tap House, specialising in real ales and rum. The micropub, based at 17b Front Street, is owner James Benson’s first venture, having decided to take control of his own destiny after he was made redundant from customer service roles. Mr Benson took over an empty unit on the front street and has turned it in to a fantastic addition to the coastal micro pub circuit. 17b Front Street, Monkseaton, NE25 8AQ Facebook: @fstaphouse
Whitley Bay: THE SPLIT CHIMP The Split Chimp opened early February 2019 and occupies one of the external units of the recently refurbished Spanish City, overlooking the promenade along the North Sea coast. The single room has a long bar counter facing the entrance with seating around
28
the periphery. The house beer from Errant Brewery is supplemented with an ever changing range of four beers sourced from near and far. Unit 1, Spanish City Dome, Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay, NE26 1BG Facebook: @splitchimp
Whitley Bay: STORM CELLAR Storm Cellar is the ideal spot to discover new beers – with the added bonus of being able to take them home to enjoy as well. Featuring 10 lines, which include Black Storm Brewery house cask ales, they also stock a great range of beers, ciders, wines and spirits from across the UK – offering you a selection of beers exclusive to Storm Cellar in the North East. Enjoy comfy sofas alongside rustic, engaging charm, where everyone’s welcome. 10 York Road, Whitley Bay, Ne26 1Ab Facebook: @Whitleybaystormcellar
North Shields: ENIGMA TAP
Whitley Bay: The Dog & Rabbit When the long standing ladies clothes shop Gabrielle, which used to occupy the premises, closed its doors, husband and wife team Tony and Julie Patton seized the opportunity to give Park View in Whitley Bay one of the things it was lacking and, after a major renovation, opened the doors to the Dog & Rabbit pub and micro-brewery. Tony had been home-brewing for a number of years, and is a long time champion of real ale and supporting local brewery’s. He wanted to make the pub exactly that – a pub. No gimmicks, no loud music, no television, no flashing lights, just good old fashioned proper beer and proper craic! The décor is ‘old school’ dark wood and deep rich red. The seating was made to order from a local charity, and the mahogany counter was rescued from a Cumbrian hotel, all adding to the authentic feel of the pub. 36 Park View, Whitley Bay NE26 2TH Facebook: The Dog & Rabbit Micro Brew Pub
The Enigma Tap, a name inspired by Thomas Brown, of North Shields, who in 1942 retrieved documents from a sinking German U-Boat which were critical to cracking the Enigma Code, is North Shields first micro pub. The pub, based on Bedford Street in the town centre, focus on sourcing local products and being environmentally friendly. They are using reclaimed wood for furniture and are committed to having a plastic-free operation. They support local breweries and have a wide selection of cask and keg offerings. Some of the most recent additions to the list include Northern IPA from Hadrian Border Brewery, Azacca Pale from the Almastybrewingco and the malty classic Red Gown from Firstandlastbrewery. There is a selection of nibbles and food offerings, as well as various street food nights and their popular quiz nights. Keep updated with new beverages and what’s on on their Facebook page. 60 Bedford Street, North Shields NE29 0AL Facebook: @EnigmaTap ENIGMA TAP
Tynemouth: PLATFORM 2 As the name implies, this is sited on Platform 2 of Tynemouth Metro Station, in a former coffee house which originally was the station waiting room. The single rectangular room has a mix of perimeter and freestanding seating, and there is a free vintage style jukebox. Board games are available, and there is an outside drinking area on the station concourse. Four handpumps offer beers from local breweries. Tynemouth Station, Tynemouth, NE30 4RE Facebook: @platform2tm PLATFORM 2
Monkseaton: LEFT LUGGAGE ROOM Specialist craft beer pub in the heart of Monkseaton in the former Parcel and Left Luggage Room of Monkseaton Train Station, serving a selection of beers, wines, specialist spirits. Access is directly from the southbound platform side. A single open plan room has the bar at one end and freestanding seating. In their words: “No alcopops, no cheap lagers, no televisions, just great drinks and great conversation, in a great building...” Monkseaton Metro Station, Norham Road, Monkseaton, NE26 3NR Facebook: @leftluggageroom 29

Pull-Apart
CHEESE SCONE CHRISTMAS WREATH
¹ 35 mins
15 servings
This pull-apart cheese scone wreath is ideal for festive buffets
32
INGREDIENTS
★ 450g self-raising flour ★1 ⁄ 2 tsp salt ★ 2 tsp finely chopped fresh rosemary ★ 110g chilled Lurpak® Slightly Salted Butter, cut into pieces ★ 300g mature grated Cheddar cheese ★ 1 large egg ★ 200ml milk, plus extra for brushing ★ Rosemary sprigs, to garnish ★ Olives, to serve
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/ fan oven 200°C/ Gas Mark 7. Grease 2 large baking sheets. 2. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the chopped rosemary and stir it in. Rub in the chilled Lurpak® Slightly Salted butter with your fingertips until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in about three-quarters of the cheese. 3 Beat the egg and milk
¹
together, then stir it into the mixture with a knife. Bring the dough together with your hand, then turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few moments until smooth. 4. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 3cm, then use a small (3-4cm) cutter to stamp out the scones, re-rolling the dough as necessary. Arrange 15-16 scones an overlapping circle on one baking sheet. Put any remaining scones on the second baking sheet. Brush the tops with a little milk and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top. Bake for 12-15 minutes until risen and golden. 5. Leave to cool for a few minutes. Garnish the wreath with rosemary sprigs and serve while warm, with olives and extra Lurpak® Slightly Salted butter.
☛ Cook’s tip:
When cutting out the scones, avoid twisting the cutter – this will help them to rise better.

RUM CHRISTMAS CAKE MUFFINS
8 servings
These mini Christmas cakes are utterly delicious – moist, fruity and full of flavour – and just the perfect size! INGREDIENTS
★ 150g currants ★ 150g sultanas ★ 150g raisins ★ 100g glace cherries, halved ★ 100ml dark rum ★ 100g Lurpak® Unsalted butter ★ 100g dark muscovado sugar ★ 2 eggs, beaten ★ Grated zest & juice of 1 orange ★ 150g plain flour ★ Pinch salt ★ 1 tsp ground mixed spice ★ 50g caster sugar ★ Pecan halves, blanched almonds & glace cherries, to decorate
METHOD
1. Put the currants, sultanas, raisins and glace cherries into a bowl. Add the rum, stirring well. Cover and leave in a cool place for up to 2 days, though at least overnight. This plumps up the fruit to make the muffins deliciously moist. 2. Preheat the oven to 160°C/ fan oven 140°C/Gas Mark 3. Put 8 paper or foil muffin cases into a muffin tin.
3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the Lurpak® Unsalted butter and sugar until light and fluffy, using a wooden spoon or hand-held electric mixer. Gradually add the eggs, beating well between each addition. Stir in the orange zest and orange juice. (Don’t worry if the mixture curdles). 4. Sift the flour, salt and mixed spice into the bowl, folding them through with a large metal spoon. Add the soaked dried fruits and stir thoroughly. Share the mixture between the muffin cases. Bake for 50 minutes in the centre of the oven. Cool completely. 5. Put the caster sugar into a saucepan with 100ml water. Heat gently to dissolve, then boil for 1- 2 minutes. Brush over the cakes and arrange the nuts and cherries on top. Brush again with the glaze – be careful as the glaze is really hot!
☛ Cook’s tip:
Brandy could be used instead of rum – the choice is yours! 33

WINTER WELLBEING As the temperature drops and the days get shorter, here's some tips to winter-proof your wellbeing
The colder seasons can wreak havoc on our wellbeing. In cold weather, some people are at increased risk of stroke, heart attack and pneumonia, flu, falls and hypothermia. It can also affect people with mental health conditions, such as depression.
and soup are great winter warmers.; and remember to have plenty of fruit and vegetables and to avoid eating too much processed food that is high in fat and sugar.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM FLU
The lack of sunlight nay leave you feeling tired and sluggish. To counteract this get outdoors in natural daylight as much as you can and make time for regular exercise such as a brisk winter walk. Physical activity will lift your mood, leave you feeling energised, and help to keep you fit and healthy. Wrap up in layers and don’t forget a hat, gloves, thick socks and a scarf.
For most healthy people, flu is something unpleasant that they generally get over in a week or two. However, older people, the very young and those with an underlying disease are at particular risk of serious illness. To reduce the likelihood of spreading flu, use tissues to trap the germs when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often with soap and water and bin used tissues as soon as possible. Contact your GP for details of their flu vaccination programme. And if you don’t qualify for a free NHS flu jab, many local pharmacies offer the vaccine privately for between and £10 and £15.
EAT & DRINK WELL
It may be tempting during the colder months to reach for unhealthy snacks such as biscuits, crisps and chocolate, especially over Christmas when we find ourselves surrounded by tine of sweets. But being overweight or indeed underweight can affect your energy levels and your health, so it’s important to eat a balanced diet. Porridge
North Tyneside Council Tel: 0345 2000 101 my.northtyneside.gov.uk 42
GIVE YOURSELF A BOOST
KEEP WARM
Heat your home to at least 18°C (you may prefer your living room closer to 21°C) and wear several layers of light clothes rather than one chunky layer. On cold nights, keep your bedroom window closed because breathing in cold air can increase the risk of a chest infection. And use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to keep warm in bed - but don’t use both at the same time.
TALK TO YOUR PHARMACIST
If you feel unwell, even if it’s a cough or a cold, don’t wait until it gets more serious, seek advice from your pharmacist.

Have yourself an
eco-friendly Christmas!
The environment is at the forefront of our minds more than ever. The average household generates more rubbish at Christmas than at any other time of the year, but there are lots of simple steps you can take to make the festivities environmentally friendly. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
FOOD
If you’re the one cooking the Christmas lunch, shop local to help reduce food miles. Buying produce that is in season also helps. Winter greens such as cabbages and sprouts are virtually grown on the doorstep and are in season during the winter months. Consider buying organic too where possible, as no pesticides will have been used. If you really want to be eco-friendly you could go meat free with a nut roast. Meat production is said to contribute to high levels of methane and nitrous oxide. Don’t over buy food either. If you’re realistic about what you need there will be less waste. It’s only one day after all - and the shops will be open again on Boxing Day. Make the most of left-overs, such as the turkey carcass, which can be used as a stock for soups, or make some turkey sandwiches, soup or bubble and squeak. Visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for ideas. Make sure wine or champage has real cork stoppers, which can also be used as firelighters. Simple & Effective: Brown paper and festive ribbon
DECORATIONS
Go for a real tree if you can. A real tree not only smells fantastic, but it’s totally recyclable – unlike a fake tree. If you do buy a fake tree, go for one you know you’ll use year after year to get your money’s worth, and avoid unnecessary waste. If you really want to be green, why not make your own decorations by collecting pine cones, tying ribbons to sprigs of holly and bake gingerbread cookies to hang from the tree? Bunting made from second hand textiles can also add some festive cheer. Ditch the glitter too – that the sparkly stuff is rubbish for the environment. It’s not good for sea life – so if you have to have a bit of twinkle in your celebrations, shop around for a biodegradable alternative. If you need new lights for your tree, LEDs are miles better – they use 95% less energy than traditional bulbs. Good for the environment AND your electricity bill.
GIFTS
Shop local for your gifts, which will not only help to reduce your carbon footprint but also supports a small business - your cash is going to local people, as well as ensuring your gift is more unique. Recived an unwanted gift? Don’t bin it, donate it to your local charity shop. Don’t overbuy. We’ve all done it. Bought a ‘joke’ present which we know won’t go down well, and will likely be in the bin by New Years Day. Instead go for something useful such as restaurant vouchers or a book. 46
When you’re wrapping presents, shy away from sparkly, plastic-y wrapping paper – this can’t be recycled. Instead, get creative and wrap presents in recyclable brown paper and reusable festive ribbon (see image above).

Recycling is so important at this time of year. Christmas cards that don’t have glitter or glue on them can be recycled in your grey bin. Turn those that can’t be recycled into gift tags for next year! Recycle used batteries. Many supermarkets have collection bins or you can pick up a free recycling bag from your local Customer First Centre. These bags can be sealed and placed in your recycling caddy on top of any glass. Or better still, invest in rechargeable batteries and stop using single use batteries altogether. Large biscuit and sweet tins can be reused for storage or recycle them in the main section of your bin, just make sure they’re completely empty and free from plastic and tape etc. If it isn’t shiny metallic or coated in glitter and stays in a ball when scrunched up in your hand then it can go in your recycling bin. All other wrapping and bows or foil should go in your rubbish bin. Keep egg boxes as these are ideal for storing tree baubles safely until they’re needed again next year.
