NORTH SHIELDS TWINNED WITH MERTHYR TYDFIL North Shields is one of ten UK towns to have been selected to participate in a domestic ‘twinning’ trial aimed at reinvigorating local town economies.
H
arnessing the traditional concept of twinning a scheme organised by The Carnedie UK Trust gives a new spin to help UK towns prosper and innovate The North Tyneside town has been paired with Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorgan in Wales, which is located about 20 miles north of Cardiff. The new coupling follows the search for twinned partnerships launching in October last year by the Carnegie UK Trust. In a new twist to the traditional concept of town twinning, which dates back to the Second World War, the aim was to pair towns with similar characteristics or challenges, but potentially with different back stories and approaches, to consider how to make positive change in the future. Both North Shields and Merthyr Tydil were historically industrial towns, with North Shields trading in fishing and shipbuilding and Merthyr Tydfil in coal mines. Both towns now have the same focus of attracting economic growth and improving the employment and wellbeing opportunities for their citizens. Over the coming 18 months, both towns will build their ties, develop a body of evidence, receive economic planning support, and have access to catapult funds to kick start new commercial, voluntary and social enterprise activity. The initial six months of the partnership will see each of the towns devise a twinning action plan that could reignite their fortunes.
6
Gina Wilson, Development Manager at the Carnegie UK Trust, said: “Twin Towns is aimed at encouraging towns to make a positive impact locally, especially at a time when devolution of power to cities and regions is becoming more prevalent. In fostering new relationships with partners that towns might not have considered before, it will provide a new perspective and hopefully new solutions to real and current issues. Whilst we don’t expect the towns’ concerns to be resolved overnight, we hope that the new partnerships will be the start of something positive.” The North Shields Twin Town partnership is being led by the North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce. David Bavaird Chair of the North Shields Chamber of Trade & Commerce commented ‘ the Chamber are excited to be selected as a part of the Twin Towns Project and we look forward to working with Merthyr Tydfil representatives to develop plans which will help stimulate economic activity and make our towns more attractive for business, residents and visitors’. The Carnegie UK Trust was established in 1913 by Scots-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It seeks to improve the lives and wellbeing of people throughout the UK with particular regard to people who are disadvantaged. The Trust operates the ‘Flourishing Towns’ programme that supports research, policy and

practical work to empower prosperity and social wellbeing in town communities. The Trust ran TestTown until 2016, the UK’s biggest skills programme for high street entrepreneurs. It led the consortium that built and launched Understanding Scottish Places, Scotland’s first online data platform to compare data for every town and city in the country. It recently published groundbreaking research on global best practice for achieving broadbased transformations in towns suffering economic challenge, which reveals that very local control, clear and coherent purpose, and understanding interrelationships are all key to sustained success. TALES FROM THE HAPPY HUNTING GROUND Pearl Saddington, Manager at The Old Low Light Heritage Centre explains how a new exhibition will be full of fabulous stories and artworks, co-curated by the people who have the stories to tell.
A
s we wander around historic sites, how many of us think about the underlying message that is being given though exhibitions and events? Take for example the following scene from a well-loved heritage site not a million miles away: A costumed demonstrator teaches a school group about the process of making bread, or knitting a gansey. What is the message the students take away? That they are lucky to live today when the bread is readily available from their corner shop and that their jumpers are made in distant factories and sold to them so cheaply? Or how about a different slant, one in which the interpreter explains that these processes need skills that are more or less become extinct. The interpreter explains how we’ve lost the skills our ancestors had and now their culture is lost. A different message, one about an idealised era.
Nostalgia was better in the good old days.
Theresa May’s gambit to make Britain great again reminded me of a question I keep asking myself since my undergraduate years, ‘are things getting better or worse?’ Worse for whom, in what way? Listen into any conversation and you’ll think that most people think things are getting worse. People have positive feelings for certain aspects of a life that no longer exists; nostalgia! Heritage can be presented as a nice fluffy blanket of nostalgia, a sea of irrelevance or as messy and challenging as everyday life. Nostalgia can be a powerful tool for heritage sites. I love the times when an object triggers nostalgia in someone which then starts a conversation, but I never really ‘got it’ until I visited Edinburgh’s Museum of Childhood recently when staring back at me through the case was my first ever Tressy Doll. A massive smile came to my face, I looked around for someone to talk to about it. If someone had been next to me they would have been bored rigid by the amounts of outfits I had saved up for, and how I used my sister’s Action Man as her boyfriend. I’m even smiling as I type this article. 12
The way we never were.
So what’s the harm in tapping into this nostalgia if it makes people happy? Well, like any drug, it can mask real issues and put a stop on our ability to adapt to the present. We can, and should definitely learn from the past, but since we all tend to remember the positive things in life, relying on nostalgia can over-simplify matters. It is easy to perpetuate the myth that a historic version of something is more authentic than things today. Something that the American historian Stephanie Coontz calls ‘The Nostalgia Trap.’ Stephanie has dedicated her career to warning people of the ‘dangers of imaging a Golden Age in the past that we should try to recapture.’
How can we avoid the nostalgia trap?
This summer’s exhibitions at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre ‘It Started With A Fish’ together with ‘Scenes From The Happy Hunting Ground’ will be presenting a more complex history of North Shields’ of the fishing industry. Even though there are those who remember the history of the fishing industry fondly, there were other narratives at work.
Between myth and reality.
The Exhibition will dissect the myths of North Shields’ fishing industry. For example, what does the heritage of the industry look like through the lens of; women, art, the people involved, migrant labour and the sea itself? This fascinating exhibition will be full of fabulous stories and artworks, co-curated by the people who have the stories to tell. The exhibition will prompt us to ask some bigger questions. It will invite many players into the debate to have their say including fishermen, scientists, and decisions makers as well as organisations committed to protecting the environment. It will remind us all that we are all ‘doing’ history and it is never ever done. The exhibition opens on 04 August until 30 September. NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE NEW BIKE RACKS FOR THE TOWN CENTRE
The number of people cycling, whether to get to work or for pleasure, continues to increase and cyclists will soon have more facilities for securely parking their bikes in North Shields town centre. Thanks to a grant from the High Street Innovation Fund, North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce has arranged for five new bike racks to be made and installed by local metalwork company, William Oliver & Rodman Russell Limited. Four racks will be located in the central parts of Bedford Street and one in Church Way, opposite the entrance to the YMCA. Each rack can accommodate 10 bikes. Installation is planned for mid-March. “We considered a number of possible sites in and around the town centre and concluded that the racks would be of most use in Bedford Street and Church Way”, commented Miles Walton, Secretary of the Chamber. “We hope that this will encourage more shoppers and other visitors to the centre to travel here by bike. Cyclists told us that there were insufficient places for bike parking and these racks should help take away some of that concern.”
A BUSY SPRING AT THE BEACON CENTRE
Spring is fast approaching and with that comes a series of fantastic events taking place at the Beacon Centre, commencing with Mother’s Day and Easter celebrations. Prior to Mother’s Day, younger visitors to the Centre on Saturday 18th March, will have the chance to make an extra special gift for their mum by decorating a bespoke piece of pottery. Once they have finished their design, the pottery will be taken away, fired and glazed and ready for them to collect in time for Mother’s Day. Spaces for this activity are subject to availability, so to avoid 16
disappointment contact us on 0191 2583909 to book your place. For those that feel that their mum deserves a little spoiling, the Beacon will also be hosting a competition on their Facebook page, where you can win a series of pampering goodies, simply by posting a picture of yourself with your lovely mum and telling us why she is so great. Throughout the Easter holidays the Beacon will be hosting a series of interactive activities including an Easter egg hunt, crafts, face painting, as well as the chance for younger visitors to decorate and take home their own Easter egg cup. The Beacon is also thrilled to confirm that The Family Hub are back by popular demand. In addition to bringing their mobile ball pool and soft play equipment, they will be joined by a whole host of special guests and characters who will be providing free hands on taster sessions to engage children visiting the centre. Lastly, if you're looking for ways to save money, why not check out the Beacon Car Park Membership Scheme, where you can park in the multi-storey Car Park for just £1 a day! LUV NORTH SHIELDS
One of our favourite national pastimes is having a good moan. Be it about the weather, the traffic, the football team we support… the list is endless. But when it comes to being positive we often need to try a bit harder, to deliberately adjust the way we look at the world around us. As a famous poet once said “Keep your face always toward the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you.” Twee, but true! The twitter account @LuvNorthShields has been set up with this sentiment in mind. What could happen if we took the time to be deliberately positive about the town in which we live, work and play? As well as bringing about a shift in our own outlook perhaps we could even see other people’s attitudes about North Shields shifting too? That’s the beauty of social media – you never know where the message will travel! So, if you’re a Twitter user please do follow @ LuvNorthShields – and post your own comments and photographs of life around town using the hashtag #LuvNorthShields. The “I heart NS” logo is available royalty-free for any purpose promoting North Shields. Versions can be downloaded from: www.goodlabs.uk/LuvNorthShields the 29th of April and 1st of May to coincide with the first Bank Holiday in May, with this year’s event promising to be bigger and better than ever. The North Shields event is set in Northumberland Square, with over sixty stalls offering visitors a range of the finest food and drink in the region with a range of varied entertainment available throughout the weekend. Commentating on this year’s event David Bavaird, Chair of the Chamber commented ‘ we are delighted to welcome back the Proper Food and Drink Festival to North Shields building on the success of previous years and the extra day will allow more visitors to attend as the festival always sees a significant increase in footfall in the town’. DAIRY & EGG FREE SPELT CHOCOLATE BROWNIES
These are deeeeeeeelicious! They are egg and dairy free and contain no refined sugars. If you/your kids are fine with dairy then use regular milk, butter and chocolate. You can substitute the oil for 3 eggs but let the mixture cool a little before adding the eggs.
INGREDIENTS 125g dairy free dark chocolate 100ml coconut milk (or any other dairy free milk) 100g dairy free spread, plus a little extra to grease the tin 300g maple syrup seeds of ½ split vanilla pod or 2 tsp vanilla extract 50g cocoa powder 2 tbsp light oil eg rapeseed 150g wholemeal spelt flour 1 tsp baking powder METHOD 1. Preheat oven to Gas mark 5, 190°C. Grease a 20cm x 30cm brownie tin (I use a high sided baking tray) and line it with non-stick baking paper. Leave the paper sticking up around the sides so that you can lift the brownie out when cooked.
2. Over a very gentle heat, melt the chocolate, milk, maple syrup and vanilla in a saucepan, stirring regularly. 3. Remove from the heat and whisk in the cocoa powder. 4. Add the flour and baking powder and then add the oil. 5. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for 10-15 minutes until it is just set in the middle. 6. Lift the brownie out of the tin as soon as possible so that it doesn’t continue to cook. 7. Cut into squares once cool. Enjoy slightly warmed with a dollop of creme fraiche – heaven!
Tip!
Don’t overcook these as then they will be all gooey in the middle - yum!

GLOBAL STARS HEAD TO NORTHUMBERLAND Glastonbury, Leeds Festival, Coachella - now Northumberland has unveiled the line up for its own major music festival launching this summer.
T
he Libertines and Pet Shop Boys will headline Festival on the Wall which is pitching up in a stunning countryside location near Hadrian’s Wall just 12 miles from Newcastle/Gateshead, from Friday 04 August to Sunday 06 August 2017. Pete Doherty, who hails from Hexham, will headline the main stage with The Libertines on Saturday night, and the Pet Shop Boys are the main stage act on Friday night – a homecoming gig for North Shields-born lead vocalist Neil Tennant. Neil Tennant commented: “We are looking forward to bringing our futuristic show to a wonderful historic area in the North East.” Other confirmed artists playing over the weekend include Mark Ronson, Twin Atlantic, JP Cooper, MNEK, The Sherlocks, Calum Scott and North East rockers Maximo Park, with more acts to be announced. The new festival will take place across 350 acres of privately-owned farmland, where for three days and nights festival-goers will camp out and enjoy a variety of unrivalled moments of excitement, happiness, relaxation and community through music, dance, carnival, art and gastronomy. Festival on the Wall aims to be ‘the happiest festival in the UK’ by maintaining the quality enjoyed in everyday life and giving visitors every option possible for an enjoyable weekend, from really great food (and not having to wait too long in line to purchase it), to easy ways to charge your phone, straighten your hair, have a hot shower or camp in comfort with striking views. Live music will take place on a number of stages across the weekend, with The Thunderdome providing dance DJs and entertainment for late-night revellers in a Mad Max-esque area with a 360-degree, flaming stage and a central DJ booth shooting lightning bolts over the crowd. In addition to the live music, there’ll be a whole host of things to see and do, from roller disco in a field, Karavanoke, fine dining 100ft in the air with a bird’s eye view of the main stage, and even a hot tub chill-out zone. The experience will be fully immersive as it will embrace
20
virtual technologies, allowing festival-goers to view all music sets from the weekend in a unique VR zone. Camping will include everything from bringing your own tent to booking a pre-pitched tent, as well as options to stay in luxury yurts and sleep pods with views of the starry Northumberland skyline. Working for over two years to make it happen, festival founder and director Dale Mason from Northumberland, and business partner Richard Gillies, have lined up a skilled festivals team. Dale said: “Festival on the Wall is primarily a festival for the North East, created by the North East. I’ve thought for some time that this amazing region needs a music festival to be proud of and what better location than the stunning Northumberland countryside, just a few miles from our world-famous landmark Hadrian’s Wall? “When planning our line up for the first year we were keen to showcase talent which emerged here in the North East and are thrilled to have secured the likes of The Libertines and Pet Shop Boys, which we hope will excite people in the region as well as attract festival fans from further afield to visit Northumberland. “Our line up will have something for everyone, whatever their taste in music, and all will be revealed in full over the coming weeks and months – including our Sunday schedule which we are very excited about.” Additionally, up to £10 from each ticket sale will go to Unicef UK to help enable the world’s leading children’s organisation to continue their vital work ensuring children around the world can lead happy and healthy lives. Various camping options are available over the festival weekend, with early bird weekend camping tickets priced from £170, and discounted price points for teenagers and students. Children 12 and under are welcome accompanied by an adult for just £10. VIP packages are priced from £330 and luxury accommodation will also be available including yurts and tipis. Click and collect tents pitched ahead of arrival will soon be available too. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.festivalonthewall.com

COSY & CASUAL DINING IN THE HEART OF TYNEMOUTH A new restaurant and bar Serving seasonal, nutritious, locally sourced food has recently opened in Tynemouth
T
he Coast Kitchen and Bar opened its doors earlier this year in the former Lui’s Wine Bar on Front Street, after owners John Sproats and Rachel Errington invested a huge 50,000 to totally transform the eatery. John and Rachel, who between them have a background in marketing and hospitality, are joined by chef Rob Arnold, who brings a wealth of experience after working at Jesmond Dene House, Irvin’s on the Fish Quay and Rockcliffe Hall, where he worked alongside Michelin star chef Kenny Atkinson. Rob has recently returned from a year in Vancouver Canada, and the menu he has created takes inspiration from the West Coast of America. The venue serves seasonal, nutritious, locally sourced food, crafted in-house to eat in or takeaway, alongside an impressive range of soft and alcoholic beverages. The emphasis at Coast is definitely on high quality, healthy, home cooked food, with the minimum of fuss. They are passionate about local produce, and source local ingredients wherever possible, as well as constantly changing the menu to make use of whichever produce is in season. The menu is full of interesting combination dishes, like the smashed avocado and pickled chilli served on sourdough, and the lentil, tabbouleh, tomato and

goats curd salad (served in a cup or a bowl), as well as hearty meals, seaside classics, sharing platters and tempting desserts. They serve food all day, so you can get everything from a healthy breakfast to start your day, to a bold and creative lunch, through to a unique and hearty evening meal. To compliment the food, the bar stocks a wide variety of awardwinning teas and coffees, as well as an extensive wine, cocktail and craft beer menu – they even offer their very own exclusive Coast Middens Blonde Ale! If you had previously visited Lui’s you’ll notice a big difference to the interior. It has had a contemporary refit, making it modern, spacious and fresh. We shared a bowl of seaweed salted organic popcorn (another unique addition to the menu) while we waited for our main dishes. I chose the Beef Bevette whilst my wife opted for the Chicken, Leek, Potato Terrine with Smooth Piccalilli and Olivia’s sourdough. Both dishes were exactly what we thought, fresh, full of flavour, light and beautifully presented. We couldn’t leave without trying a dessert, the strawberry parfait with white chocolate mousse was my choice whilst my wife went for the yoghurt panna cotta with an apple and rhubarb flapjack. Both were well presented, light and full of flavour. As the nights are getting lighter

you can soak up the summer sun street side at one of their pavement tables, but if the weather takes a turn then you can retreat inside and take in the relaxed, convivial atmosphere. The bar is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drink throughout the day and everything in between. Coast Bar and Kitchen brings something different to Tynemouth, and is certainly worth a visit! 69a Front Street, Tynemouth, NE30 4BP Tel: 0191 257 7257 www.coastkitchenandbar.co.uk

QUALITY, AFFORDABLE CASUAL WEAR ON PARK VIEW
H
amiedog Menswear, located on Park View in Whitley Bay, is celebrating its first six months in business, and they are proud to have joined an excellent selection of independent retailers and service providers on the busy street, just around the corner from the Park View Shopping Centre. At Hamiedog you can get the designer look without having a designer label, from their small but varied collection of quality casual wear for men (and women!) of all ages. There are huge savings to be made, and you won't find anything in the store which costs over £20, so you could kit yourself out and still have some money left to spend at one of their neighbouring stores! Now that Spring is finally here, why not have a browse of some of their t-shirts, with prices starting from only £3.99, polo shirts from £5.99 and they’ve even got a selection of holiday shorts in, if you're lucky enough to be going abroad soon! They know that sometimes it's difficult to get to the high street during the day, especially if you're working or have other things to do, so they have launched their new
online shop at www.hamiedog.co.uk, meaning you can view their collections at your own leisure. They’re offering free delivery across the UK, or you can collect your order at the store, and even try everything on before you leave. They are also offering all new online customers a special discount from their first order - just enter coupon code GIMME10 for a whopping 10% off! 'COMMUNITEA' LIES AT THE HEART OF HAPPY PLANET
H
appy planet studio & Gallery is the colorurful new shop on Ilfracombe Gardens, that acts as the headquartes of Happy Planet Creative Arts, a social enterprise set up by Artist Gail Curry in February 2014. Gail told me that The name Happy Planet come from her long standing ethic that neither the planet of people should be harmed in the name of profit. The gallery contains the work of 21 local artists, working in many different mediums, as well as some carefully chosen Fairtrade items and environmentally friendly goods to provide a wonderful choice of unique gifts. What sets the gallery apart from others is the 'communitea' aspect, as where else would you be offered free tea from the locally made planet shaped teapot while you take a look around or watch Gail work or have a chat about anything creative you do yourself or would like to do? Should you wish to try something for yourself there are a range of creative workshops on offer throughout the year, as well as 'poetry with friends' and 'art with friends', two regular groups that meet to offer socially engaging creative groups under the guidance of Gail and local writer Elaine Cusack. What we aim to do is to gently inform of the benefits of people embracing their own creativity, and having fun with it, says Gail, an ex-social worker, who worked with children and young people. My aim was always for the gallery to be a welcoming space that visitors feel at home in and enjoy visiting as much as I enjoy working in I. If you would like to know more about Happy Planet and their activities you can find their website at www. happyplanetcreativearts.org.uk or you can connect with them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, although perhaps the best way would be to go and visit and have a cup of tea in a very happy place.

OLD SCHOOL CHARM AT THE DOG & RABBIT A former ladies dress shop has transformed into a popular micro-brew pub in the heart of Whitley Bay.
T
hink about Park View in Whitley Bay and what comes to mind? Clothes shops, a range of interiors shops, a good selection of café’s, hair and beauty outlets, estate agents. The street is bustling with life and brimming with independent businesses, but one of the things it is not renowned for, and has been lacking for years, is its very own pub. Well, it is lacking no more, as last year saw the opening of the Dog & Rabbit at number 36 Park View, right in the heart of the town. When the long standing ladies clothes shop Gabrielle, which used to occupy the premises, closed its doors last summer, husband and wife team Tony and Julie Patton seized the opportunity to give Park View one of the things it was lacking and, after a major renovation, opened the doors to the Dog & Rabbit pub and micro-brewery. Tony had been home-brewing for a number of years, and is a long time champion of real ale and supporting local brewery’s. He wanted to make the pub exactly that – a pub. No gimmicks, no loud music, no television, no flashing lights, just good old fashioned proper beer and proper craic! The décor is ‘old school’ dark wood and deep rich red. The seating was made to order from a local charity, and the mahogany counter was rescued from a Cumbrian hotel, all adding to the authentic feel of the pub. The pumps fill your glass with local ales such as Box Social, Cullercoats, Three Kings, Tyne Bank and the new Flash House Brewery. The pub is dog friendly, with doggy beer and doggy treats for sale, all accompanied by a doggy poop bag to take home!

No gimmicks, no loud music, no television, no flashing lights, just good old fashioned proper beer and proper craic!
The micro-brewery is slowly getting up and running too, so watch out for even more local brew on the way! Tony told us ‘”We are really pleased with the response from the local community and real ale fans from the region. It was a gamble to take on a project like this, but we are both glad we did and haven’t looked back. The Whitley Bay community have been superb, one lady even painted a picture of a dog and a rabbit for us – how nice is that!” So if it is real ale, real conversation, in real surroundings you are after, there is no better destination in the local area than the Dog & Rabbit. FOCUS ON WHITLEY BAY - BEAUTY REVIEW
LOOK YOUNGER & MORE RADIANT WITH A NEW TREATMENT AT HÀNA BEAUTY CLINIC Dawn Wilson tries out the innovative Guinot Hydraderm Cellular Energy Machine, a new addition to the acclaimed Hàna Beauty Clinic in Whitley Bay.
I
t’s perfectly natural to want to look as youthful as you feel inside. It is also important to know you have anti-ageing options that don’t involve surgery, expense or pain. Hydraderm Cellular Energy facials are an alternative to aesthetic medicine, such as Botox or fillers, with its range of anti-ageing, clinically proven treatments using a combination of Dynamic Ionisation, Thermal Energy and Lifting Stimulation. I was invited along to Hàna Beauty Clinic by Emma, the salon owner, to try this innovative new treatment. The clinic has yet again been awarded the status of Guinot Crown Salon 2017. This coveted title celebrates the highest achieving Guinot salons and spas in the UK and Ireland who demonstrate success, dedication and loyalty to the brand. By visiting a Crown Salon, clients can be confident that they are choosing a Guinot salon of the highest distinction with flawless principles in environment, customer care and treatment expertise, so I knew I was in good hands! My treatment began with a consultation on any issues I had with my skin, so Emma could target these areas. I have combination skin, but some really dry patches on my cheeks due to cold weather and central heating. Emma then left me to remove my top and lie on the bed, covering myself with a towel. She then began with a soothing welcome massage around neck and shoulders, followed by a thorough Cleanse and exfoliation. Next was the first step using the cellular energy machine, where Emma applied bespoke serum gels to my face, eyes, neck and décolleté. The gels were then massaged into my skin using metal rollers. Emma mentioned that I may feel a tiny little charge of electricity over more sensitive areas, however I felt nothing except the tiniest sensation under my nose, not remotely painful. These electrical charges cause the serums to be pushed into the skin and the current (dynamic ionisation) causes 'chaos ' within the cells waking them up, helping to regenerate and plump up the skin. The lift part of the facial is next, with lymphatic 42
drainage to remove toxins from the skin. Emma used the machine to stimulate my facial muscles, which tones and lifts muscles (this part can be done as a facial on its own as an intensive non-surgical face lift course). I could really feel my muscles contracting, so I knew it must be working! The final step was perfect for decongesting my skin, increasing the circulation and increasing energy within the cells, in other words giving me a real boost! Oxygenating cream was massaged into the skin with heated 'mini iron ' using thermal energy. This step was really soothing. Finally, Emma cleansed off all the products applied an eye and firming face mask, whilst giving me a soothing hand and arm massage.
“
Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested!
Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! I'm still feeling the after effects a few days later, much longer than I've felt before from a facial. The cost of the facial I received was £92, and definitely worth the money, but prices start from as little as £50 for the Lift Facial, and they can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I would recommend giving the girls at Hana a call and they can advise you as to the best option for you. A course of treatments is advised for long lasting results, but a one off can be booked if you need a pick me up. (although I guarantee you'll be so pleased with how your skin looks and feels you'll really want to book more!) The person who can help is right here in Whitley Bay – and that person is Philip Stephenson! Philip, along with his wife Linda, runs 'Whitley Bay Jewellery and Antiques Ltd' at 171 Park View and he is a Registered Valuer with the National Association of Goldsmiths and a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers. With over thirty years experience Philip is more than happy to guide you through the contents of Aunty Mary's Jewellery Box! "A lot of people have in their jewellery collection, pieces they know nothing about," says Philip, who used to work as a manager for Goldsmiths Jewellers and successfully ran Northern Goldsmiths stores in Newcastle and Sunderland . He was also involved with Reid and Sons on Blackett Street and Grainger Street . Philip continued "For many years while I was at Reids I handled many fabulous and historic items, some of which belonged to famous and wealthy clients. My training and knowledge of antique and period jewellery and silverware was built up there.' Philip and his wife, who were both made redundant in
2009, decided to follow their dream and open their own business. Philip spends a lot of his time giving advice and discussing valuations with his clients, many of whom came by personal recommendation from people he and Linda have looked after in the eight years since their business opened. You can take jewellery into the shop on Park View and Philip will be happy to help, whether you are looking for a valuation for insurance, probate, to sell, or simply for your own interest and peace of mind. A written appraisal can be provided for a small fee. The valuation is carried out on the premises and comes with photographic identification. If you require only a verbal opinion Philip is also be happy to help you to the best of his ability. Call 0191 2518444 for details. 43

TAKE THE ‘OW’ OUT OF INGROWN TOENAILS
A
By Stephen and Robert of Bay Podiatry in Whitley Bay
s experienced podiatrists, an ingrown toenail is a common condition which we see regularly. They are often extremely painful and can have a significant impact on the enjoyment of everyday activities such as walking, sports and even sleeping. The good news is you don’t have to put up with them! In many cases an ingrown toenail can be treated quickly and painlessly with good lasting success, allowing a speedy return to doing all the activities you enjoy free from pain. An ingrown toenail can come about when the edge of the nail breaks the surrounding skin. This often causes pain and swelling and can result in recurrent infections. In chronic cases, a red, highly vascular area of skin can be seen around the area which is called ‘hypergranulation tissue’. This tissue bleeds easily when knocked and is unlikely to resolve until the offending piece of nail is removed. Ingrown toenails can be the result of injury or poor nail cutting technique. Some people are more likely to suffer this condition due to their nails being ‘involuted’ or ‘curled in’ at the edges. We advise people to cut their nails straight across, to allow the edge of the nail to grow free from the skin. Avoid cutting down the sides, as this can leave uneven sharp pieces of nail that can dig in or break the

skin if knocked. If you find it difficult to cut your nails, sometimes filing them regularly will help. In the past it was thought that cutting a ‘V’ in the middle of the nail would help - we now know this is unlikely to provide any benefit as the nail grows from the base. If self-help doesn’t work, then it is best to a see podiatrist (the specialists in feet). A podiatrist will assess your feet and offer an individual treatment plan. This may include simple nail cutting and advice on footcare. In cases where the toes have been sore for a long time or has become swollen or infected, minor surgery can be offered. This is undertaken using local anaesthetic and can be done so that the painful piece of nail does not grow back, providing a lasting solution to the problem. Many people imagine this will be really painful to have done but are surprised at how straightforward it is. In our experience, many people are unsure where to go when they have pain in their feet. At Bay Podiatry, we pride ourselves on being the experts in feet and our aim is to keep you walking comfortably. Sore feet do not have to spoil the enjoyment of doing everyday things, be that walking to the shops or running a marathon. If you suffer with an ingrown toenail or sore feet, then we would be happy to have a chat over the phone, or to see you in our new, modern clinic so we can advise you on the best way forward. Our clinic is located next to Tesco Express at Whitley Lodge Shopping Centre. For more information call us on 0191 252 4441 or visit our website www.baypodiatry.co.uk

OUR WHITLEY BAY
People are talking about Whitley Bay again! There is a renewed enthusiasm for the town, and a lot of this is down to a new online marketing initiative, with people’s Facebook news feeds filling up with pictures of the businesses and traders they know, love and support.
I
n December 2016 the online marketing campaign ‘Our Whitley Bay’ launched to positively promote the businesses and services of Whitley Bay, with the emphasis on connecting the people who live and work in Whitley Bay with those who own, run and work in the many companies, often independently and family owned across the town. Every business owner, manager or key staff members are photographed with a light box highlighting the #ourwhitleybay creating a unity with those businesses featured before and encouraging those who follow. The Facebook page @OurTownWhitleyBay (www.facebook.com/ourtownwhitleybay) features many of our local favourites including the award winning Di Meo’s Ice Cream & Nicholson’s Butchers feature as well as F.E Maughans, Escape Boutique, Blueberry Square, Finlay’s Décor, Olives at the Station, The Playhouse, Whitley Bay Clinic, Hamiedog Menswear, House of Beauty and Eden’s Café to name just a few. Plus home based businesses and local trades are included too. Such has been the initial success of the campaign across Facebook you can now follow ‘Our Whitley Bay’ on Instagram and Twitter too, or sign up for the newsletter at www.ourwhitleybay.co.uk keeping you informed of news, offers and town wide events.
As the regeneration of Whitley Bay continues to progress and excitement builds of The Dome and promenade completion, the “Our Whitley Bay’ campaign goes from strength to strength. 46
A short promotional video filmed in February over two sunny days (yes sunny days in February!) showcases the Whitley Bay businesses sense of community spirit, demonstrating their passion and loyalty for their town and encouragement for people to support them and shop local. This video can be viewed online or if you are popping into the Jam Jar Cinema, Whitley Bay’s very own community cinema you might be lucky enough to see it before a blockbuster film showing too! As the regeneration of Whitley Bay continues to progress and excitement builds of The Dome and promenade completion, the “Our Whitley Bay’ campaign goes from strength to strength. Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade (WBCOT) facilitates the ‘Our Whitley Bay’ campaign, with business membership at a record high as a result, from 21 members in late 2016 to over 150 as of March 2017. ITALIAN TREATS BY THE SEA Richard Wilson decided to pay a visit to Links Art Gallery, a delightful cafe with lots on offer
There’s plenty to see while you enjoy your a tea or coffee
O
n one of our many ‘blow the cobwebs’ morning walks along Whitley Bay beach, my wife and I decided to call in to Links Art Gallery for a satisfying breakfast and to set us up for our stroll. The Links Art Gallery is a unique art gallery and café located at Dukes Walk, Northern Promenade, Whitley Bay, ideally, situated between Whitley Bay town centre and St Mary’s Island. A ten minute wander along the beach will take you into the heart of Whitley Bay, or in the other direction to the historic and picturesque Saint Mary’s Lighthouse. The venue is home to a superb selection of art and gifts, all available to purchase, with the emphasis firmly on work by North East artists. We visited mid-morning on a Friday and there was a bustling atmosphere, with a number of tables and comfortable sofas already taken by couples and groups of friends. The walls are adorned with paintings, prints and photography from North East artists, and there is a fabulous selection of locally themed gifts. The café menu is heavily Italian influenced, with a good selection of ciabattas, salads and Focaccias, as well as Italian Breakfast specials, pancakes, soups and their extensive coffee and tea selections. I chose the Salsiccia, which is a toasted ciabatta with Cumberland sausage, caramelised onions and melted fontina cheese (a cheese I have never tasted before but am now a fan of!) whilst my wife opted for the Prosciutto, the Italian Stone Baked Focaccia filled with ham, emmenthal cheese and tomato. Mine was a delicious fusion of flavours, extremely tasty
The very tasty Salsiccia

and a real hearty filling – a definite thumbs up. My wife’s was fresh and packed with flavour, she particularly loved the fresh Italian bread. There is an appetizing choice of desserts, so it was an easy decision to try something sweet, but not as easy to select just one! After a lengthy deliberation I opted for the white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake, whilst the Cannoli Siciliani filled with sweet ricotta cheese caught my wife’s eye. Both desserts were fresh and light and set us up for our morning walk. The café menu also has an extensive range of coffees and teas, and they are proud to be associated with Bristot, a world leader in the production of exclusive coffee. In order to achieve this prestigious blend their experts set about conducting extensive and important botanical and agronomic research by revisiting the original blends’ countries of origin. The result is an exclusive coffee, unrivalled and with limited production. Before we left, we browsed the array of gifts and accessories as well as the excellent selection of greetings cards. Links Art Gallery is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and a light snack whilst perusing, and possibly treating yourself to, some local art and gifts.

DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO? TUNE IN TO YOUR SIXTH SENSE! Irene Anderson explains how we can tune in to our intuition to solve our problems
H
ave you ever been in a situation where you faced a dilemma or had to make a difficult decision and you just didn’t know what to do? Have you had that sensation of thoughts going round and round in your head, wearing you down but getting you no-where? I’m betting your answer to those questions is a resounding yes. I know that, because we all face difficult decisions and periods in our life where we feel stuck or unable to see a way through, It`s part of our human experience. When faced with problems we usually respond in two ways: Try to work it out in our head. The trouble with using this strategy alone is that you only know what you already know. So trying to find answers to things outside of your scope of understanding is a pretty big ask. Respond emotionally. This is the one where you don`t even engage the brain, instead you go off the deep end and start throwing plates, or cry or become depressed and feel hopeless . However, there is another way which helps us get out of our head and it`s limited understanding, calm down our emotional response, helps to tap into a greater wisdom. It’s called using our intuition. Now, stay with me for a moment before you decide to dismiss this as cods-wallop! Another way of putting this is using our guut instinct. You will know exactly what I mean by that. It is that feeling in the pit of your stomach that warns us about danger, when hairs stand up on the back of your neck and you just know something is wrong. Or when you come across a situation and you just know that it is right. A perfect example of this is buying a house .Yes, you do your
56
sums, look in a certain location, know what kind of features you want but the final judgement is about how the place makes you feel. You get a gut instinct. How do we tune in to our intuition to solve problems? Firstly, the breath switches off the chattering mind and puts us back in touch with our body. Roll your shoulders back and down and focus on your breathing. Breathe in deeply for a slow count of four and out again for four. Repeat until you feel a calming of the mind. • Bring the situation to mind but see it bathed in light. Intensify it to a beautiful golden, healing light. Imagine it all sorted with the very best outcome for everyone. • Let go of your own solutions and dogma and be open to new ways of seeing things. In other words trust that things will be okay. Say to yourself, I trust that all things will work out for the best. • Repeat your process of tuning in every day. What can I expect? • Intuition is a feeling energy, so tune in to what you feel. Look for and expect signs to give you guidance • You may find that what you thought was a problem no longer seems to be such a difficulty and you can let it go. • You may find that once you change your response to a situation it sorts itself out. This has happened to me so many times. • You may feel guided to take action in a way you hadn’t thought of (do it). I would love to know your response to this article and any experience you have with using this technique, please email me: ireneanderson5@hotmail.co.uk
NEW CHOIR FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T SING Yes you read it correctly a brand new Social Singing project is about to be launched and it’s aimed at all those people who love to sing BUT who have been told by others or who believe themselves that they can’t sing.
WHY START A CHOIR FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN’T SING?
Firstly Irene Anderson and Paul MacDermott, who will be running the choir believe that EVERYONE can sing given some basic skills, practise and a lot of encouragement. Singing is SO good for you. It helps with breathing, posture, confidence, makes you feel happier and singing in a group helps develop friendship and camaraderie. Singing is not just for the chosen few who can read music or who have had their voice trained, everyone should feel the joy that belting out a great song can bring.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THE CHOIR?
A very warm, friendly environment with no judgement, no auditions and no expectations of any previous knowledge of music. Learning great, toe tapping, popular songs taught in a way that anyone will be able to quickly learn. Lots of laughter, fun, encouragement and support. Nobody giving a hoot how your voice sounds because everyone is in the same boat .
ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?
Irene and Paul already run Linskill Community Choir consisting mainly of people who had never sung before, and have held several workshops for ‘non-singers’ They know how nervous people can feel but also have seen the real difference singing in a choir can make to all they have worked with. You will be in safe hands!
NOW is the time to make a change, join us in the choir that can’t sing and let’s see what we can achieve together. So are you ready? Maybe you can’t sing but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t sing.
HOW DO I JOIN? Every Wednesday at 7.15 pm
Linskill Centre, North Shields, NE30 2AY £5 per session For more information and to book your place phone Irene on 0191 257 1357 Follow us on Facebook at Can’t Sing Choir Opportunities to join with Linskill Community Choir in singing at the Summer Fair will be available to those who want to perform at the end of the 6 weeks.

Heaton Terrace Bowling Par, today
BRINGING HEATON TERRACE BOWLING PARK BACK TO LIFE In a quiet corner of North Shields, a determined group of locals have been quietly restoring a neglected bowling park.
C
ollingwood Bowling Club (founded 1902) took possession of a redundant bowling park located on Heaton Terrace, North Shields in November 2014, with the aim or bringing it back to life and restoring it to it’s former glory. The bowling park was in a bad state when the club took over, being totally overgrown and in a badly neglected condition. Over the past two and a half years they have worked hard to restore the bowling park. The renovation continues at a pace, and there has already been a dramatic improvement in its appearance and the performance of the bowling green. The pictures above fully illustrate how the club has progressed, and demonstrate how they are working to ‘bring the park back to life!’ The club are now looking to encourage the local community to come along and get in to sport and there are a number of the ways in which they are trying to get local community members involved. Free, Saturday morning taster sessions will run throughout each outdoor summer season, (10am until noon) and hold coffee mornings once a month throughout the winter period, to maintain social contact with their members and any guests.

The bowling park was in a badly neglected con dition.
A number of friendlies are held, to ensure that new members are given every opportunity to sample friendly competition bowling. They also have teams in various competitive leagues throughout the week. The club maintain their membership subscriptions at a low level to assist people into the sport - under18s are free and they hope to encourage a wide range of male/female members of all ages into the sport with the purpose of improving their health and well being. They also hope that those attending will consider joining them and to then regularly enjoy the health and social benefits the club and sport they provide.

The club are now looking to encourage the local community to come along and get in to sport
The aim of the club is to offer members and visitors a safe, comfortable venue with excellent facilities that will give them a friendly experience and a sport to enjoy whilst improving their health. HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN
In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care. 62
What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.
What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 64
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. LOCAL NEWS
NORTH TYNESIDE TRUSTEES CELEBRATE IN STYLE THANKS TO YOUNG VOLUNTEERS Friday 24 February saw almost 100 trustees and committee members of local charities, community groups and voluntary organisations come together for a BIG Celebration at the Linskill Centre in North Shields.
F
unded by the Big Lottery's Celebrate programme, the James Bond-themed event was organised by 30 young volunteers from North Tyneside, with support from staff at VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency). The event was a huge success - guests were treated to a Bond-themed three course meal, planned and cooked by the young people, live entertainment from local singer Molly Glover and a prize raffle, drawn by North Tyneside's Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn. Attendees also took part in a number of 'trustee tasks', answering questions about their roles and making their mark on a 'trustee fingerprint map' of North Tyneside. The young volunteers also screened two short films they'd made in advance of the event, which involved them interviewing a number of local trustees and researching facts about trusteeship before editing the films ready for screening. Feedback from the evening was hugely positive. Kath Nixon, Chair of Out of Sight charity said: "Thank you for the exceptional 007-themed evening at the Linskill Centre. We can honestly say it was a wonderful evening 74
Young volunteers enjoying the handson experience of preparing and cookin g a three course meal.
“
During the planning of the event, VODA arranged workshops for the young volunteers on topics such as marketing, design, event management and catering.
with much laughter - such a change from a meeting for ‘business’. It was a fabulous, exceptional evening where we relaxed had fun and had a wonderful meal. The room was decorated beautifully and the entertainment was perfect. The young people involved should be very proud of their achievements - clearly a lot of thought had gone in to the event." The event was funded by the Big Lottery’s Celebrate programme, which aims to bring different members of the community together to celebrate good causes. VODA’s Chief Officer, Lisa Goodwin explains how the event came about: “Here at VODA we know how hard trustees and committee members work for their groups and organisations, on a voluntary basis too. They are often the backbone of grassroots services that help some of the most vulnerable people in our society and we really wanted to show them how much their contribution is valued. This event was planned to say ‘thank you’ to the trustees of North Tyneside and we’re thrilled so many of them came along and enjoyed the evening.” The young volunteers who organised the event were all graduates from the National Citizen Service (NCS) volunteering scheme for 16-17 year olds, of which VODA is a delivery partner. Lisa continues: “We’ve found that a large number of our NCS graduates want to continue volunteering but that there aren’t many opportunities out there for this age group. The Celebrate event has given them the chance to get involved in community action again, and they’ve absolutely excelled themselves. They took on the challenge of planning an event for 100 people with real enthusiasm and have learnt some valuable skills along the way.” During the planning of the event, VODA arranged workshops for the young volunteers on topics such as marketing, design, event management and catering. A number of the young people were also supported to gain their food hygiene certificates and enjoyed hands-on experience of preparing and cooking a three course meal in a real catering situation with support from the Linskill Centre’s staff. Other members of the team took on roles including filming and photography, presenting, waiting tables and events management. 17-year old Paige Bertram, who was part of the events team, said: "Thank
you for the wonderful opportunity. It has been so nice working with so many different people and having this experience. It was a great night and I couldn't have asked for nicer people to work with." Representatives from the Big Lottery also attended the evening and were hugely impressed. Head of Funding, Louise Snelders said: “Thanks again to everyone involved in organising the event. The young people involved were spectacular, the food and entertainment were great and, as a funder, I was delighted that we’re able to enable events like this to take place. I’m sure that all of the young people have learned a huge amount and there were certainly some real stars amongst them!” Photographs and films from the event can all be viewed at www.voda.org.uk. 75

PARLEZ - VOUS FRANÇAIS? If you fancy learning a new language, Barbara from Lingua Forme is on hand to help. By Margery Wilson
D
o you set off on holiday to sunnier climes hoping that the hotel staff, waiters, shop assistants, bar staff, etc. all speak English? I always promise myself that I'll learn a few words, even if it's just 'please' and 'thank you', but I never seem to get round to it (and anyway I'm too old to go back to school I tell myself!) Yes, I'm one of the vast army of tourists who use the excuses 'learning a language is too hard; learning a language will take too long; everyone speaks English don't they' to justify my lack of positive action! Learning a new language can be a very fulfilling experience, whether it is something you want to do as a family, are a regular traveller looking to increase your language range, a mature couple retiring abroad, or if you are simply keen to learn. Another myth is that everyone speaks English - I had a comical experience whilst on holiday abroad trying to buy an ankle support in a pharmacy. Believe me, there is only so much you can indicate with hand gestures!! If you like to visit destinations which are somewhat off the beaten track, you may discover few or no English speakers. With this in mind, let us introduce you to Barbara, owner of Lingua Forme, a French conversation classes for Adults business. Barbara is a fully qualified teacher of French with has several years' experience. She has lived and taught in France, in Metz situated in the beautiful Lorraine region. There are about 220 million French-speakers world-wide, so French really can be a 'Lingua Franca'. If you were taught French at school, you may remember it as a less than enjoyable time, sitting in rows chanting phrases and declining verbs on end. If you have been away from school for a number of years you may feel embarrassed to be back in a learning situation and unwilling to take the first step.
78
It can take a lot of courage to go through the door for the first time but the effort will be well worth while. For these reasons, let her explain how she runs her sessions. "We sit round a table in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and share knowledge, chat and exchange news. Learning is not confined to any one method but encompasses books, handouts, videos and CD's. We also play games and learn in a supportive atmosphere where NO question is a stupid question (often the question YOU ask is what other people wanted to know but couldn't pluck up the courage to ask.) So, all you need to become a proficient French speaker is dedication, hard work and a willingness to learn (and with a lot of laughs sprinkled through the sessions)" Barbara also runs extra classes for A level, GCSE and one-to-one tuition, just call her to discuss availability and times. Barbara is presently running classes in Seaton Sluice,Whitley Bay and Morpeth, covering all levels from beginners to advanced, so please get in touch if you are interested. At the classes you watch videos, listen to CDs and play games, all aimed at making learning fun. The classes are all aimed at putting you at ease and making you want to learn. At Linga Forma no question is a stupid question - it really is a great environment to learn the language. So, why not impress your friends, family and the hotel and restaurant staff on your next visit to the country, and learn a new language – it is never too late to learn French! For more information contact Barbara on: 07946 115 256 or barbara@linguaforme.co.uk www.linguaforme.co.uk
