Ventoux charts the parallel lives of these champions who overcame great adversity in tandem, and the mountain that cast them in opposing directions. Join 2Magpies as they restage the race using breathtaking video accompaniment and a pair of road bikes, asking the question – how far will we go to succeed Full Price: £9.00 | Concession: £8.00 6

HOW DO YOU EAT AN
ELEPHANT ?...
ONE BITE AT A TIME! By Irene Anderson
I
t’s that time of year again, when we all start frantically making New Year resolutions and setting new goals. We tell ourselves that this will be the year when we finally lose weight, get fit, stop smoking, drink less/stop drinking etc. All good, sensible aims and goals BUT, the trouble is many of us get January madness, and decide that overnight we are going to change everything in one fell swoop. We are going to give up carbs and sugar, just eat spiralised vegetables, salad and fish, get up early and to the gym every day. All with the mentality that we deserve to suffer because we have over indulged and that ‘No Pain, No Gain’ is the only way forward. Of course the media, gyms, and health and fitness ‘gurus’ are very keen to whip us up into a frenzy of doing the latest fad diet or the newest craze High Intensity workout. Our panic is their profit after all! We all know, however, that this all or nothing gung-ho approach is doomed to end in tears and, by mid-February, most of us have fallen off the wagon and are beating ourselves up about having failed yet again. We blame ourselves for having no will-power. What if I told you however that the reason most people’s resolutions fail within weeks has nothing to do with willpower (or lack of it) and everything to do with how our brain has been programmed. Our brain does not like change. In fact it sees change as a threat, and reverts to the fight or flight mode, resisting change with all it`s might. Our brain accepts things best in little and often chunks. Small changes repeated continually till new neural pathways are created and a habit is formed. So, the very best way of achieving long term goals is to start small and make changes gradually. Ask yourself the following, `What small changes I can make? Could I … • Get out of the house and walk for 10 minutes every day? • Cut out snacking between meals? • Make time for a healthy breakfast every day? • Have fruit, vegetables and healthy options in the fridge and pantry? The important thing is to make it achievable and be consistent. 16
Our brain accepts things best in little and often chunks. Small changes repeated continually till new neural pathways are created and a habit is formed. Often times when we tell ourselves we will set a limit on something we find ourselves actually doing more and so we feel successful. The more successful we feel, the more we are likely to repeat those behaviours. So, this year, instead of trying to eat an elephant whole, why not try taking one bite at a time? NEW CHOIR FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T SING Yes you read it correctly a brand new Social Singing project is about to be launched and it’s aimed at all those people who love to sing BUT who have been told by others or who believe themselves that they can’t sing.
WHY START A CHOIR FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN’T SING?
Firstly Irene Anderson and Paul MacDermott, who will be running the choir believe that EVERYONE can sing given some basic skills, practise and a lot of encouragement. Singing is SO good for you. It helps with breathing, posture, confidence, makes you feel happier and singing in a group helps develop friendship and camaraderie. Singing is not just for the chosen few who can read music or who have had their voice trained, everyone should feel the joy that belting out a great song can bring.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THE CHOIR?
A very warm, friendly environment with no judgement, no auditions and no expectations of any previous knowledge of music. Learning great, toe tapping, popular songs taught in a way that anyone will be able to quickly learn. Lots of laughter, fun, encouragement and support. Nobody giving a hoot how your voice sounds because everyone is in the same boat .
ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?
Irene and Paul already run Linskill Community Choir consisting mainly of people who had never sung before, and have held several workshops for ‘non-singers’ They know how nervous people can feel but also have seen the real difference singing in a choir can make to all they have worked with. You will be in safe hands!
NOW is the time to make a change, join us in the choir that can’t sing and let’s see what we can achieve together. So are you ready? Maybe you can’t sing but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t sing.
HOW DO I JOIN? Every Wednesday at 7.15 pm
Linskill Centre, North Shields, NE30 2AY £5 per session For more information and to book your place phone Irene on 0191 257 1357 Follow us on Facebook at Can’t Sing Choir Opportunities to join with Linskill Community Choir in singing at the Summer Fair will 17 be available to those who want to perform at the end of the 6 weeks.

DOG LOVERS URGENTLY NEEDED IN 2017 Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a national Charity that trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds, is scouring Tyne & Wear for dog-lovers willing to take care of their adorable puppies. Caroline & Terry Roeves, volunteer puppy socialisers, say:“We have had our first puppy Daphne, a Show Cocker Spaniel, for just over a year. Now we have dozens of new friends from regular dog walks. We are so much fitter and enjoy opportunities to socialise Daphne in local libraries, schools, stores, cafes and restaurants. Daphne loves all of this and the fuss that is made of her. We love volunteering for Hearing Dogs. Being part of the Hearing Dogs family is an experience that far exceeds our expectations and puts a smile on our and others’ faces every day. We would definitely recommend puppy socialising for Hearing Dogs, your life will change for the better from day one!” Hearing Dogs for Deaf People relies on its extensive network of more than 1,900 volunteers across the country in order to continue its life-changing work. In particular, the Charity is looking for dedicated local dog-lovers to become ‘Puppy Socialisers’ in 2017. Lucy Parkin, Puppy Training Instructor for Tyne & Wear adds: “If you live in the area and are looking for something new to do this year, then why not give something back and meet some 20
loveable life-changing puppies along the way? As long as you have a car, a secure, private garden, and enough time to train a puppy daily, then we would absolutely love to hearing from you. You really can make such an enormous difference.” To find out more about puppy socialising, contact the volunteering team on volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk, 01844 348122 or visit our website www.hearingdogs.org.uk/volunteer

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 24
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

NEWS FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE AND COMMERCE
Chamber Launch New Website In order help promote North Shields as an attractive place for business, residents and visitors the Chamber have spent the past few weeks upgrading their website with the new website planned to go live on the 1st of February. The new website has been designed by Chamber members Wubbleyou, who are based on Howard St, and who have produced a website which is much more attractive and easier to update with all of the news which directly affects the business community, residents and visitors to North Shields. Commenting on the new website, Chamber secretary Miles Walton stated ‘Our website is now recognised as one of the best ways of finding out what is happening in North Shields. We wanted to make sure that the website had a modern look and was easier to use and we are very impressed with the final result and with the hard work, suggestions and design from Wubbleyou’. Mark Renney from Wubbleyou also commented ‘It was a pleasure to work with the Chamber and to further develop the Chamber's ability to communicate with members and the general public, and we have found the Chamber extremely resourceful in the past, and it was good to work with them again. The Chamber website can be viewed at www.northshieldschamber.co.uk and details for Wubbleyou can be found at www.wubbleyou.co.uk . Beacon Centre Help Customers In January the focus for many of us is on our health and wellbeing, especially after a well enjoyed, but indulgent Christmas break. Chamber members the Beacon Centre are also keen to ensure the wellbeing of their customers, and are happy to announce that they are about to install a defibrillator within the Beacon Centre. The defibrillator will be positioned just inside the entrance to the Centre Management office, which is located in between the stores JD Sports and Three. 26
To access it members of the public call their security team on 07955253462, who are present within the centre and who will rapidly respond to the call. Information posters stating this information will be displayed throughout the centre. Statistics highlight that the use of a defibrillator dramatically increase the chance of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest and, commentating on the new defibrillator, Centre Manager David Menzies stated ’we are pleased that our customers will have access to this vital piece of equipment, if ever needed’. Looking forward to the forthcoming months, the Beacon Centre will be partnering with local business The Family Hub Play Centre and Community Rooms, who are due to open in Spring 2017. The Family Hub, will be offering a range of play activities for 0-4 year olds and will be bringing their sparkle to The Beacon Centre this half term, as they showcase some of the many activities that will be on offer when they open! These free events will take place on 21st & 23rd February between 10am-3pm. During half term the Think Physics team will be returning to the centre on Wednesday 22 February, to bring science to life by delivering a host of fun and innovative activities. For further information visit www.thebeaconcentre.co.uk New Metro Timetable There’s a new Metro timetable from Sunday, 5 February – so it worth checking how this effects your journey. The frequency of services through North Shields (five trains an hour during the day and four an hour evenings and Sundays) is not changing, and nor is the first or last train times to and from the town. But some trains will be departing a few minutes earlier or later than now – so look out for new

timetables at stations from the start of February, or check journeys online at www.nexus.org.uk. Nexus, which owns Metro, is making the changes to increase the number of early morning trains and fill gaps in the current timetable. A number of early evening trains that run after 6pm have also been withdrawn as Nexus says they are very lightly used, and the resource is better placed elsewhere. Victorian Market Another Success This year’s Victorian Market, supported in part by the North Shields Chamber of Trade & Commerce, was graced with good weather and turned out to be bigger and better than ever with over 100 stalls selling a range of high class goods, with the event supported by a number of schools and choirs entertaining the visitors to the market. Commentating on this year’s market Chamber Chair David Bavaird stated ‘we are delighted that this year’s market has been such a success as it significantly increases business in the town and the market is now well established as an important part of our festive celebrations bringing visitors to the town, and being a showcase for our improved town centre. We are also thrilled that we will be welcoming back the Proper Food and Drink Festival, which this year has been extended to three days, and is open between the 29th of April and the 1st of May, and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to the town’. Details of the Proper Food and Drink Festival can be found at www.properfoodanddrinkfestival.co.uk. RECIPE
MINCE & DUMPLINGS A REAL WINTER WARMER By Be Hulbert of Baker Be
Mince and dumplings are a firm favourite in our house. This recipe makes enough for the four of us but we are quite piggy! It’s real comfort food for cold nights. You can substitute the beef mince for veggie mince and can use wholemeal flour instead of white if you want to be healthier. Thank you to my good friend Tracy who gave me her dumplings recipe a few years back. It’s a winner!
INGREDIENTS For the mince: 600 g beef mince 1 onion 1 carrot Handful of frozen peas (or Sweetcorn if you prefer) 600ml beef gravy Salt and pepper to season Olive or coconut oil for frying For the dumplings: 4oz self raising flour 2oz suet (I use vegetable suet) 5 tbsp. water Handful of chopped parsley
Tip!
Add parsley, herbs or even cheese to your dumplings.
METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to Gas mark 6, 200°C, 400°F. 2 Finely chop the onion and fry gently in the oil in a frying pan. 3 Add the mince and cook until browned. 4 Chop the carrot into small cubes (approx ½cm) and add to the mix. 5 Stir in the gravy – I just use gravy granules to make my gravy. 6 Add a handful of chopped peas. 7 Season to taste. 8 Simmer gently whilst you prepare the dumplings. 9 In a bowl mix the flour, suet,
parsley and water together. This should form a dryish dough. If the mixture isn’t coming together add a splash more water. 10 Roll into balls between your palms. I make 8 dumplings with this mixture. 11 Pour the mince mixture into an oven proof dish and put the dumplings on top of it so half are in the mixture and half are poking out. This way, once cooked, the dumplings are crispy and brown on top and soft underneath. 12 Cook for approximately 20 mins until the dumplings are golden brown and the mince is bubbling.

“WHEN THE BOATS CAME IN” FOR THE NORTH SHIELDS FISHERMEN’S HERITAGE PROJECT …
North Shields is England’s largest prawn landing port and during this prawn season, the North Shields fishing fleet, as well as visiting boats to the port, together with prawn merchants Caley Fisheries, Coquet Island Shellfish and Moir Seafoods made a significant donation of £3,930 to the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project (NSFHP) who are raising funds for a memorial to fishermen lost at sea from the port. The donation was a great boost to the start of 2017 fundraising – taking the total raised so far to almost £29,000. NSFHP have continued to receive donations from far and wide for the memorial. A painting of the Gaul/Ranger Castor by fisherman/artist Michael Smith was donated to NSFHP and sold for £500 to Sharon North from Hull - she was just 3 years old when her father Billy North was lost at sea when the ship went down on 8 February 1974 with 36 men on board. Gaye and Hugh Hutchinson 32
from “Release Potential” – a company dedicated to helping the long term unemployed gain confidence ready to return to work - donated £500 to the fundraising. William Oliver & Rodman Russell Ltd, a metal fabrication business in Little Bedford Street, North Shields donated £300. Paul Barbrook MD of WORR said - "We have been doing work for the fishing industry in Shields for many years now and we are delighted to be able to give something back and get this long overdue Memorial built in memory of those who never came back to port." Local author Dan Turner's Business Manager Amanda pictured with Paul and NSFHP Chairman Terry McDermott.
recently published book entitled "Life on The Tyne" received sponsorship from six local businesses – Irvin’s Brasserie, The North Shields Fish Quay Company, J R Fisheries, Percy A Hudson, Seaview Fisheries and Royal Quays Marina - together with a donation from graphic designer Raspberry Creative Type. This sponsorship, plus initial book sales (50 pence donation from each books sold) meant that just before Christmas, Dan presented NSFHP Secretary Joyce Marti with a donation of £275. NSFHP Volunteer Keith Bell brought in several donations from a number of ship yards including as far afield as A&P Tees in Middlesbrough who donated £250.
And proving that there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’ the Tynemouth Ladies Luncheon Club donated £100 to NSFHP Vice Chairman Henry Howard. The Sir James Knott Trust donated £5,000 and is so far the single largest donation to date, however a local Facebook group “Floppsie Cullen’s Tynemouth” who with some 1,700 members have been fundraising for over a year and have pledged to present NSFHP with a cheque very shortly of between £7,500 - £8,000. Terry McDermott (Chairman of NSFHP) said “The donation from the ‘Floppsies’ will take our fundraising to almost £37,000 of the £72,000 we need for the “Fiddler’s Green” sculpture by Ray Lonsdale, and is an amazing contribution – we are absolutely delighted.” NSFHP are one of two causes to benefit from “The Green Carnival at the Coast” which will take place at Tynemouth Priory on Friday 17th/Saturday 18th March. Keith Spedding (Fundraiser for
NSFHP) said “The Green Carnival will be a great family fun event – there’ll be a range of activities, including a 3km and 5km fun run, street performers, food concessions, music, a zip wire, a best dressed dog competition and the opportunity to be part of a World Record attempt at the largest human shamrock. NSFHP will also be present in one of five interactive worlds and I’m sure our vice-Chairman Henry Howard might even be tempted to join in with the Irish dancing!” It was Henry Howard who first raised the issue of a Memorial to lost Fishermen and he is the emotional heart of NSFHP. Born in Dublin, Henry fished out of Eire for 25 years, principally in the seas of Iceland and the Russian Coast – notoriously dangerous waters. Henry first went fishing when he was only 13 years of age, and he’s had a few narrow escapes, most notably when he was cast overboard after his duffle coat was caught by a stray hook from the gear! He was hauled back aboard
by a boat hook and told to get back to work – Health and Safety not being high on the agenda in those days! Henry said “We have come such a long way since the launch of our fundraising in July 2016 when we had just £4,000 – I am truly delighted that both the local community and business want to help us get this memorial in place. I am really looking forward to The Green Carnival – an event where Irish meets Geordie. I really believe that NSFHP have momentum now and I fully expect this to be a ‘monumental’ 2017! “Go raibh míle maith agat!" - which basically means "Thank you very much!" 33

‘IF HISTORY WERE TAUGHT IN THE FORM OF STORIES, IT WOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN’ - RUDYARD KIPLING
T
raditionally heritage centres were not built to listen, however the Old Low Light Heritage Centre on North Shields Fish Quay is aiming to address this with its 2017 programme of events. Honestly, I wonder how many of you reading this feel a strong sense of belonging in your local museum or heritage centre, let along one of the big nationals. How many of you can say that you feel that your voices and sense of place are connected to the objects that are on display? In the words of the America’s great arts leaders ‘Heritage reminds us that we belong, “voice” offers the promise of what we can become. An individual life that exhibits a balance between heritage and voice can be thought of as rich and empowered.’ (Eric Booth At the Old Low Light, we believe in the power of our objects tell these stories, and these stories to act as kind of talismans that get handed down through the generations. Organisations like the Old Low Light are guardians of these stories helping us all to
34
understand who we are and our connections to our wider global family. Without doubt there is little doubt that stories can transform us. Compelling storylines in soap operas can both represent and reflect societies’ values which can in turn help break down barriers and prejudice without the need for activism and policy. This year we are inviting people to come and help make things happen as we dive into our fishing waters to create this summer’s hero participatory exhibition; ‘It Started With A Fish … … the origins of North Shields.’ We want our communities to help us develop an exhibition which will tell stories that will open up debate as well as engage. For over a thousand years hundreds of families have made their living from fishing and its associated industries. We are asking people to be part of telling the story of this unique heritage and distinctive lifestyle. Themes that we are asking our communities to explore are; methods of fishing, role of women in the industry as well as the social and economic conditions
that saw North Shields become England’s largest prawn port. From the early 13th century the growth and prosperity of North Shields depended upon fishing and the industries which supported it. From the ship’s nets and its decks an entire economy grew and fortunes were made thanks to this resource. For every one man at sea, there would have been five on land supporting the industry, and we would love people to bring in their both their objects and any memories that run alongside them. ‘It Started With A Fish’ will prompt us to ask some bigger questions, such as how can the sea’s resources continue to feed a world’s growing population? What can sustainable and responsible fishing be? We want to open up the exhibition to allow as many people as possible to have their say; from fishermen and trawler owners to organisations committed to protecting the environment and biodiversity. What memories of the fishing industry do you have? How did the industry bring the community together? Which of your memories belong to be shared with the Old Low Light’s visitors? If you have fishing stories, images and objects you would like to share so we can feature them in our exhibition and as part of our resources, please email; pearl.saddington@oldlowlight. co.uk or call in we are open 7 days a week from 10:00 – 3:00

CHICKEN, HAM AND PEA PIE TAKES 1 HOUR SERVES 4
✳ 4 large chicken breasts ✳ 30g butter, melted ✳ Sea salt and black pepper ✳ 250g frozen peas ✳ 100g ham, torn into pieces ✳ 300ml full fat crème fraîche ✳ 3 tbsp double cream ✳ 3 tbsp fresh chives, chopped ✳ 3 tbsp grainy mustard ✳ 500g ready roll puff pastry ✳ 1 egg, beaten Method
1
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Place the chicken breasts in an ovenproof dish and brush with the melted butter, season with sea salt and black pepper. Place in the oven and cook for 20 - 25 minutes, until just cooked through. Remove from the oven, cool slightly and remove the skin and slice into chunks. Place into pie dish or into a baking dish with a lip. Blanch the peas in boiling water and drain immediately and scatter over the chicken with the ham. Mix the crème fraîche, cream, chives and mustard together and spoon over the top of the chicken mixture and grill for 5 minutes until heated through and golden brown. Create a pastry lid - On a floured surface, roll the pastry to thickness of 1cm, cut a long strip as wide as the rim of the pie dish and using a little beaten egg, fix to the edge of the pie dish. Brush with the egg, and then lift the rest of the pastry over the pie, using the rolling pin to help. Gently press the edges with your fingers and trim with a sharp knife. Brush lightly with the beaten egg to glaze, then bake for 25 - 30 minutes or until the pastry is risen and golden brown.

PARLEZ - VOUS FRANÇAIS? If you fancy learning a new language, Barbara from Lingua Forme is on hand to help. By Margery Wilson
D
o you set off on holiday to sunnier climes hoping that the hotel staff, waiters, shop assistants, bar staff, etc. all speak English? I always promise myself that I'll learn a few words, even if it's just 'please' and 'thank you', but I never seem to get round to it (and anyway I'm too old to go back to school I tell myself!) Yes, I'm one of the vast army of tourists who use the excuses 'learning a language is too hard; learning a language will take too long; everyone speaks English don't they' to justify my lack of positive action! Learning a new language can be a very fulfilling experience, whether it is something you want to do as a family, are a regular traveller looking to increase your language range, a mature couple retiring abroad, or if you are simply keen to learn. Another myth is that everyone speaks English - I had a comical experience whilst on holiday abroad trying to buy an ankle support in a pharmacy. Believe me, there is only so much you can indicate with hand gestures!! If you like to visit destinations which are somewhat off the beaten track, you may discover few or no English speakers. With this in mind, let us introduce you to Barbara, owner of Lingua Forme, a French conversation classes for Adults business. Barbara is a fully qualified teacher of French with has several years' experience. She has lived and taught in France, in Metz situated in the beautiful Lorraine region. There are about 220 million French-speakers world-wide, so French really can be a 'Lingua Franca'. If you were taught French at school, you may remember it as a less than enjoyable time, sitting in rows chanting phrases and declining verbs on end. If you have been away from school for a number of years you may feel embarrassed to be back in a learning situation and unwilling to take the first step. 46
It can take a lot of courage to go through the door for the first time but the effort will be well worth while. For these reasons, let her explain how she runs her sessions. "We sit round a table in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and share knowledge, chat and exchange news. Learning is not confined to any one method but encompasses books, handouts, videos and CD's. We also play games and learn in a supportive atmosphere where NO question is a stupid question (often the question YOU ask is what other people wanted to know but couldn't pluck up the courage to ask.) So, all you need to become a proficient French speaker is dedication, hard work and a willingness to learn (and with a lot of laughs sprinkled through the sessions)" Barbara also runs extra classes for A level, GCSE and one-to-one tuition, just call her to discuss availability and times. Barbara is presently running classes in Seaton Sluice,Whitley Bay and Morpeth, covering all levels from beginners to advanced, so please get in touch if you are interested. At the classes you watch videos, listen to CDs and play games, all aimed at making learning fun. The classes are all aimed at putting you at ease and making you want to learn. At Linga Forma no question is a stupid question - it really is a great environment to learn the language. So, why not impress your friends, family and the hotel and restaurant staff on your next visit to the country, and learn a new language – it is never too late to learn French! For more information contact Barbara on: 07946 115 256 or barbara@linguaforme.co.uk www.linguaforme.co.uk

I’d fully encourage any voluntary or community groups to take a look and take advantage of what’s on offer. Two hours of advice from say, a legal firm or insurance firm, could cost some groups hundreds of pounds so it really is generous

COMBAT YOUR HEARING LOSS! “Can you repeat that please? I didn’t quite catch it.” You are likely to have heard or have said this a fair few times if you have been (or know someone who is) suffering from hearing loss.
I
t is estimated that there are more than 10 million people in the UK with some degree of hearing impairment or deafness (that’s about 1 in 6). There are varying causes of hearing loss, however age and noise come up trumps above the rest. Age is something we (unfortunately) can’t contend with, however noise exposure is within our control for the most part. Prevention and protection are the best ways to fight off noise-induced hearing loss. This is easier said than done, as we seem to be living in an ever-increasing noisy world. Busy restaurants, booming shopping centres and those boisterous little ones can make it almost impossible to avoid damage to your delicate eardrums. There are some small steps you can take to make a big impact on your hearing protection: • Don’t have your television, radio or personal music player on too loud. If you can’t have a comfortable conversation with someone who is two metres away from you, turn the volume down.
• Use noise-cancelling headphones. If you don’t wish to turn the volume down, you can buy headphones that block out more external noise, meaning your volume doesn’t need to be so high. • Protect your ears. If you work in a noisy environment such as a building site, pub or workshop, use ear protection equipment such as ear muffs or ear plugs. • Don’t interfere with your ears. Avoid damage to your ears by keeping them clear of cotton buds, cotton wool, tissue (and fingers!). The ears are self-cleaning and shouldn’t need your assistance. Even by taking these precautions, it isn’t guaranteed that you will be safe from the perils of hearing loss so if you do still suspect your hearing isn’t quite tip-top, My Hearing Clinic in Gosforth can give you a full and comprehensive free hearing test. Their friendly expert Audiologists can accurately determine any level

SUFFERING FROM DOMESTIC ABUSE? THERE IS A WAY OUT
D
omestic Abuse is a hideous crime which shatters lives, often in secret, leaving people feeling vulnerable and trapped. You do not have to be trapped; there is a way out. Shock new figures released by the Crown Prosecution Service show that offences of violence against women and girls continue to increase. The number of convictions for domestic abuse offences is at a record high. Whatever your perception of domestic abuse is, it does not respect geographical lines, gender or social class. It affects men and women and is spread across the full spectrum of society. Many people tend to think domestic abuse is limited to the use of violence and intimidation but it is much more far reaching. The Government definition of domestic abuse is: Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional
60
It is not just violence. Abusive behaviour can involve damaging someone’s self worth, controlling finances, manipulation, preventing someone from having friendships or hobbies, humiliation, making someone feel guilty about what they’re wearing and what they eat. The list goes on. The Government have consulted on creating a new offence of domestic abuse, criminalising coercive and controlling behaviour. Other protective measures have been introduced and the police have additional powers. Most people don’t know where to start and are in fear of contacting agencies and the police for fear of repercussions. Then of course you worry about the practical things: Where will you live? Can you stay in the home? Can you be protected by court orders? How you will receive an income? What about the children? How do I pay for help?
Speaking with a lawyer in complete confidence is the place to start. We can provide all of the answers and information you need so that you can make informed choices without your abusive partner knowing anything about it. You do have options. We can assist you to obtain the necessary orders to protect you and/or your children without your abusive partner knowing in advance if the abuse is particularly serious and we can assist you to plan for all of the practical things in advance of any action being taken. If things are particularly serious, court orders can be obtained the same day. Legal Aid can still be available to assist you regardless of your income We offer a free, no obligation initial appointment for up to 30 minutes where you can receive practical information about all other questions you may have, so get in touch today to make a free appointment with a specialist local lawyer and know your options.
If this affects you and you need to talk to someone in confidence about what you can do to stop the abuse please contact Clare Usher or Amir Assadi now by phone on 0191 296 1777 or by confidential e-mail to lawyer@hindle-campbell. co.uk to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss how we can help you.
