Knots, Nets & Nautical Adventures
This Summer At Old Low Light Heritage Centre Dig the Festival of Archaeology with guided walks, talks and discover what might be under your feet; or discover a hidden talent with our Mouth of the Tyne Traditional Skills Fringe Festival. The Shipyard Painters Exhibition July 22nd – September 18 th ‘The Shipyard Painters Exhibition’ will highlight the huge amount of artist talent which existed amongst its thousands of employees from draughtspeople to riveters. Co-produced and curated by Old Low Light volunteers and Tynemouth Fine Art, the exhibition will draw on private and public collections to explore the works of art created by employees of the Tyne’s famous shipyards. Swan Hunter is synonymous today with shipbuilding, but amid the company’s sometimes turbulent past the yard produced lots of creative innovations. From July 22nd – September 18, visitors

to the Old Low Light will be able to discover that ships were not the only crafts produced at the Swan Hunter yard. The shipyards of the Tyne, such as Swan Hunter and Hawthorn Leslie, are renowned for the technical expertise involved in designing and building some of the world’s largest and most famous ships - including RMS Mauretania, HMS Newcastle, HMS Ark Royal, Atlantic Conveyor and Esso Northumbria. As a relief from the meticulous detail of the drawing office and the precision engineering of ship fabrication, a wealth of original art was created in their leisure time by some of the artistically talented men and women who worked in the shipyards. Paintings by employees of the yards were shown at occasional exhibitions organised by an informal Swan Hunter Artists Group in the 1970s and 1980s, but most of their work is little known outside the local area. Our ‘Alpha Omega: Beginning and End’ Exhibition’ by local photographers The Swan Snappers will be complementing The Shipyard Painters with twenty four images creatively documenting the beginning and end of Swan Hunter’s hey days To accompany the exhibition there will be lots of hands-on family activities, talks and outreach events throughout the summer.
‘Docks and Robbers’ a lighthearted interpretation of life on North Shields Fish Quay will be on display throughout the summer in our Heritage Gallery. The exhibition which will be curated by volunteers and retired members of the maritime police, will illustrate some of the hidden stories of life on the Fish Quay and river. Local historian and author Charlie Steel will be giving a talk on Tynemouth’s House of Correction as part of this exhibition at 11:00 on 16 July. Dig It: Celebrating Festival of Archaeology 15th – 16th July Join us during the Festival of Archaeology, and dig for treasure. Archaeology gives us that tangible link to the past, showing us how our ancestors lived, and what everyday life was like for the communities who lived along the river. Bring the family along and learn how to did, identify and clean and catalogue artefacts. Let’s see if the sea has left any treasure on the beach and discover the secrets of Clifford’s Fort. We will also be joined by Dr David Petts from Durham University on 23 July at 11:00 who will be talking about recent coastal discoveries which are being unearthed along the coast. David will also be encouraging you to pick up a trowel and get involved in some of the community digs happening around the region.
Mouth of the Tyne Fringe Event: Traditional Skills and Music Festival 9th July The Festival is in collaboration with North of England Civic Trust, whom for several years held a similar event at Tynemouth Station. The day will be shared with lots of local musicians including the Mouth of The Tyne Choir. The festival begins on Friday 08 July with Kirsty Bromley and Lucy Wise and their ‘Two Hemispheres Tour. This concert of two travelling songstresses from Australia and Sheffield has its roots in Celtic, American and English Folk music and we are pleased they have chosen Old Low Light to give their only ‘Up Close and Personal’ gig of the tour. Tickets are available from Old Low Light and cost £1 A fantastic opportunity to discover the skills and crafts used to develop and maintain North Shields’ Fish Quay. The festival is in collaboration with North of England Civic Trust, and will be shared with lots of local musicians including the fabulous Mouth of the Tyne Choir. Local artisans will be sharing and demonstrating a huge range of traditional skills from rug and leather making, to wood turning and knot splicing. www.oldlowlight.co.uk 17

Things to Make & Do
Here are some activities for those long summer months when the kids are out of school and you’re running out of ideas to keep them busy!
Ship Ahoy!
Sponge Bombs!
Such a simple idea but a fab one for a sunny day. Cut an old sponge into strips and use a string to tie it into a ball. Fab for playing catch in the garden but even better as water bombs in the paddling pool on a sunny day. Simply clean then cut a hole in the top of an empty juice carton. Paint and decorate your boat then make a sail using a drinking straw and some pretty paper or fabric. Send it on its voyage in the paddling pool!
DIY Car Garage
This is a lovely activity to while away an afternoon, simply made from a shoebox. Paint the shoe box and cut out pieces to make a ramp. Use tape or chalk to mark the parking spaces. You can be inventive as you like – why not make a multi storey car park? 20
Nifty Necklaces
This is an activity that everyone loves, from the nine year olds to the three year old! You’ll need some tubular pasta and let the kids paint it with some watercolour paints. Spread it out and leave it to dry over night. Once the pasta is dry it is time to thread with it and they’re ready to go!

Preparation time: 30 mins to 1 hour Cooking time: 10 to 30 mins Makes 8-10 burgers Ingredients For the burgers 1kg/2Âźlb minced lamb (it's best not to use extralean mince as the fat will help bind the burgers and keeps them juicy when cooked) 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1-2 tbsp mango chutney 3cm/1Âźin piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated 1 red chilli, de-seeded and finely chopped Âź tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed 1 tsp cumin seeds, crushed Flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Oil, for brushing Flat bread, pitta bread or burger buns, to serve For the relish 6 ripe tomatoes, quartered, de-seeded and diced 200g/7oz tub of Greek yoghurt bunch of fresh coriander, roughly chopped 1 small red onion, finely chopped squeeze of lemon or lime juice

Time for Tea How afternoon tea became a great British tradition.
Wimbledon, Harry Potter, fish and chips and rainy bank holidays - there are few things more quintessentially British. But one time-honoured tradition - that has soared in popularity over the last few years- is the grand old institution of afternoon tea. The story goes that afternoon tea as we know it was Introduced in Britain by Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1840s. As an evening meal was served fashionably late at around 8pm, the duchess developed the habit of having tea in the afternoon and inviting her friends to join her. What started as a mini meal to stem the hunger before dinner - at the time it was usual for people to have only two meals a day - quickly escalated to become a glamorous social event for ladies who climbed the echelons of society. The pause for tea rose in prominence and popularity when Queen Victoria indulged in the ritual, elevating it to the status of a large, formal occasion, known as tea receptions. At the time, these receptions could welcome as many as 200 guests with an open invitation to visit between 4pm and 7pm, during which time guests could come and go as they pleased. Royal approval meant that Victorian socialites quickly followed suit and the practice became highly respectable. Upper•class women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for afternoon tea, which was usually served in the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. Despite being much more accessible and affordable nowadays aftemoon tea still retains a feeling of formality and style and offers a throwback to a gentler, more gracious way of living. It is usually enjoyed man occasional indulgence or to celebrate a special event such as a birthday, Mother's Day or baby shower with friends. Once confined to the top class of society, afternoon tea can now be enjoyed by the masses in venues ranging from posh hotels to independent tearooms and even garden centres.
‘The pause for tea rose in popularity when Queen Victoria indulged in the ritual, elevating it to the status of a large formal occasion known as tea receptions’ 28
Although there are no set rules about the content of a traditional afternoon tea, the menu usually comprises a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches (delicately cut into lingers% warm scones with clotted cream and jam, a variety of homemade cakes and pastries and a choke of teas, from standard breakfast tea to some rather rare and obscure ones. Teas on offer usually include Assam, a strong. fullbodied tea from India with a distinctive'malty' flavour; the aromatic Darjeeling, with a hint of almonds and wildflowers; the favoured Earl Grey with its blend of black teas scented with oil of bergamot, named after Charles, second Earl Grey, who was prime minister from 1830 to 1834: and the striking lapsang Souchong, a Chinese tea fired over smoking pine needles. Occasionally you will see hotels advertising high tea. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve low or afternoon tea around 4pm, allowing them enough time for a stroll before their evening meat whereas the middle and lower classes would have a more substantial’ high’ tea later in the day, in place of dinner. The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served - high tea being served at the dinner table - but today they simply reflect the time of day. Many hotels also offer a champagne afternoon tea for an additional charge which is a popular choice for special occasions. We may be a far cry from the old-fashioned stereotype of a nation of well-spoken toffs donning top hats and sipping Earl Grey, but afternoon tea Is still a very much loved pastime In this country. Whether it be an occasional luxury in a posh hotel, a birthday treat at a country house, or a welcome sitdown at a cafe during a hectic day at shopping, it is now easier than ever to enjoy a little slice of British tradition.

Picture is worth a Thousand Words A
This much used phrase is particularly relevant when applied to the images produced by Michelle Mercer.
A
photograph captures a precious moment in time, a moment which will never again be exactly reproduced and so, a talented, empathic photographer, who is able to put you at ease and provide a calm, relaxed atmosphere is to be treasured. Michelle Mercer (pictured left) has a passion for photography, which began years ago when she took her first photographs with her Nana's Polaroid camera. She gained BA Honours Degree in Commercial Photography, but chose to begin her working life as an IT Network Specialist. However, fast forward a few years, and having married a 'Geordie Boy', Michelle (who is from North London) moved to North Tyneside 14 years ago where she now lives with her husband, two sons and Border Collie. Michelle decided to embrace her love of photography and start her own business, specialising in portraiture. This was a huge leap for Michelle as she left a secure career in order to pursue her life-long passion. This proved to be an excellent decision however, as she is now four year in and has never looked back, proudly boasting a portfolio of dozens of happy customers and great memories to look back on. Since she made photography her full-time profession, she has expanded her service to include Wedding Photography amongst other things. This means she gets to share the happiness of that special day, to capture the magical moments and memorialise them for ever. Because she knows first-hand how much of an investment the photos are, she is extremely focussed on providing a record of the day which will accurately convey the atmosphere, emotions, love and happiness displayed by the wedding party and guests. The portraits Michelle takes are thoughtful compositions capturing the essence of the subject(s). With family groups she aims to show that they belong to each other and that they share their lives with each other. She sees the photograph as 'freezing a moment in time' and being the gateway to memories that can be relived again and again. She has a welcoming, relaxed style which puts her clients at ease. She knows how nervous some

people are when they are in front of a camera but by the time she is ready to 'get snapping' all their concerns have faded. Michelle is unique in that, as well as being a contemporary, modern photographer who loves to work in natural and urban locations, she is happy to travel across the UK documenting moments that never seem to last long enough. Michelle has also recently undertaken training in new-born and children’s photography, as this is another aspect of the art that she is very interested in. With children growing up so fast, especially during the first few months, capturing each stage in their development is precious, and a photograph can keep these memories with you forever. So, if you have a special upcoming event, or want help capturing those special moments in your life, why not visit Michelle's blog to see examples of her recent work covering weddings, new-borns and portrait photoshoots.

for Summer
Summer is the perfect time to make some changes to your interior and freshen up your home, and if you have a little bit of creativity, it’s possible to do some very nice things with limited resources. Use Plenty Of Fresh Flowers Summer is all about the celebration of life. The focus should be on vibrant colors and floral arrangements. Think about giving your home a green touch by adding lots of fresh flowers. Shop Around For Colorful Trinkets Interesting and engaging home decorations don’t have to be overly expensive. You can hit the flea markets, charity shops, Etsy or local stores, and look for cute and original little decorations. Wallpaper With Natural Prints A paint job is a good low-cost way to liven up your interior. However, it can take some skill to really go crazy with different patterns and designs, and you can get much quicker results using wallpaper. There are a lot of appealing natural prints that you can use in combination with flowers and light colors. Design Your Own Cushions Custom cushion designs are an excellent finishing touch for any home design project – no one else will have the same pillows, and you can make them fit in very well with the rest of the décor and the general theme you were going for. Check Pinterest for a wide range of projects you can try. Hang Up Motivational Quotes Everyone needs a bit of a pick-me-up from time to time, and the walls of a home can always use some added flair, so why not kill two birds with one stone 34
and put up a few motivational posters? A cool image and some plain text with a nice frame can make a big difference in terms of atmosphere. You can use these for any room of the house, and it’s easy to switch the quotes every month to focus on specific topics like love, motivation and hope. Put Up Lighter Curtains You need to let in some light and brighten up the home. Light see-through curtains will allow plenty of natural
light to get through, but they will also add an air of elegance. Create An Exotic Table Centerpiece Using some cheap glass items like candlesticks and bowls, and a few crafting materials, you can create a beautiful faux mercury glass vase. Spend some time on choosing the right floral bouquet to compliment your living room or dining room area, and you will have a breathtaking centerpiece for a very reasonable price. Set Up An Outdoor Dining Area While bringing the garden into your home is a good idea, you’ll have tons of fun if you create a small outdoor dining area. You can set up different seating arrangements in your garden, or just have a private little area where you can relax, read a book and have breakfast. With these simple and creative home décor projects, you’ll be able to really liven things up for the summer, without burning a big hole through your wallet. Try out different things, and don’t be afraid to experiment and come up with some unique ideas.

Sun
in the
By Jill Santonastaso
As the countdown to the summer holidays begins, the warm weather and sunshine bring a buzz of excitement for the imminent BBQ’s, adventures and trips to the seaside that we’ve all been craving after the long, wet winter! Summer is the perfect time of year for many alfresco family activities, it’s also the time of year doctors and medical staff see an increase in the number of patients affected by the heat and sun. Wearing sunscreen and drinking water are a good start but Jill Santonastaso from Daisy First Aid fills us in on what else you can be aware of to help protect your family this summer. 40
SUNBURN Sunburn is probably the first thing we worry about when taking our little ones out on a hot day so of course we slather on the factor 50 and pop their sun hat on! But this is not just restricted to really hot and sunny days. It is often on cloudy days with a slight breeze that we underestimate the strength of the sun while we are outside. Sunburn is often a superficial burn to the outer layer of skin, it will be red, sore and swollen. If it looks raw and blistered, this indicates a partial thickness burn that’s damaged 2 or 3 layers of skin. For babies and children, we should seek medical advice for any burn to their delicate skin, as should anyone where the burn covers a large area. This could range from a call to your GP or 111 to visiting a minor injuries unit or emergency department. Any burns to the face, hands, feet, genitals or a circumference burn need hospital treatment. With advice, mild
sunburn can most likely be treat at home. Move the child indoors or to a shaded area and cool the skin with a cool shower or a cool, wet compress or sponge. Never cool the skin with ice. Have the child drink plenty of fluids, ice pops and lollies come in handy here! Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be taken if safe to do so. Gently applying a water based lotion or petroleum jelly will help keep the skin cool and moist. Until the skin has healed, keep it covered and out of direct sunlight. If at any point your child becomes unwell or you have any other concerns, seek medical advice. Severe sunburn can include blistering, swelling, fever and chills. Never burst the blisters, cool as before and cover with cling film. Headaches, vomiting and dizziness could also indicate heatstroke, sunstroke or heat exhaustion so a medical assessment will be required. Severe sunburn can occasionally need hospital treatment with medications and dressings. Of course the easiest way to treat sunburn is to prevent it. Babies under six months should always be kept shaded and out the way of direct sunlight. Children should wear suitable clothing, a hat, a minimum SPF of 15 which includes both UVA and UVB protection and ideally play in the shade from 11am to 3pm. Personally, I always go for a factor 50 on my two. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going out and reapplied regularly. No sunscreen is truly waterproof so where splashing, paddling and swimming are involved, reapply every 1 ½ - 2 hours.
i
HEAT EXHAUSTION Heat exhaustion is more likely to affect babies and children. This is the body’s reaction to loss of water and salts through excessive sweating and the core body temperate rises above 38*C. Symptoms often occur in the late afternoon or early evening and if left untreated, can quickly lead to heat stroke. Symptoms to look out for include tiredness, weakness, feeling dizzy or faint. Pale clammy skin that feels hot to touch although the child may say they feel cold. Intense thirst, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. As well as racing pulse, headache and decreased urine output. Respond to these symptoms by moving the child to a cool, shaded area. Let them lie down and remove any excessive clothing. Cool skin as mentioned above and offer water or fruit juice to rehydrate. Ideally oral rehydration solutions and isotonic drinks are best as they also replace the lost body salts and aid recovery. Always read the instructions and gain parental consent if treating a child in your care. Always obtain medical advice, even if the child recovers quickly.
HEAT STROKE Heat Stroke is less common but a very serious condition where the body is no longer able to cool down, the temperature control part of the brain fails along with the ability to sweat. This leads to fevers rising dangerously high above 40°C and requires immediate emergency treatment. Symptoms include a throbbing headache, feeling dizzy, nauseous and vomiting
similar to heat exhaustion but may also include fainting, confusion, disorientation, low levels of consciousness and the possibility of a seizure. Skin will looked flushed and will be hot and dry to touch. Move the child to a cool shaded area and call 999/112 for help. Remove clothing and wrap in a cool wet sheet until the temperature returns to normal. Take care not to over cool the child too quickly. As with sunburn, the easiest way to treat heat exhaustion and heat stroke would be prevention. Along with sunscreen, light clothing and shade between 11am and 3pm remember to stay hydrated throughout the day, plenty of cool food and drinks, salads, fruit, ice lollies and a cheeky ice cream will all help! Cooling your skin with a damp cloth or a sprinkle of water is a good idea too. Don’t forget to take a peek in the toilet after a wee, if it’s darker than normal or you’re going less often, it’s time to top up your water bottle! Daisy First Aid Classes for Parents & Carers last 2 hours and cover responding to a medical emergency, CPR, recovery positions, head injuries, choking, allergic reactions, meningitis, fractures, burns and more. Fantastic Review from one of our Coastal Clients “We have recently Sold our property in the centre of Whitley Bay and can not thank next2buy enough for everything they did for us. Our property was on the market with another local agent for a long time with nothing really happening. We were recommended to use next2buy and to be honest had reservations as they are not based by the coast. We gave them a try expecting the same as our current agent but what they did for us was absolutely unbelieveable. From their Valuer visiting us who knew the local area and market inside out to the office team who kept us informed of all goings on. After 3 days of our property being put on the market with next2buy we had not only viewings but offers which led to a sale 11 days later. We will not hesitate to recommend next2buy to anyone selling their property throughout the North East!

DIY Garden Pots Upcycling cans, milk cartons and bottles Not in the mood to put the recycling out? All that packaging can do wonders in the garden and create some fantastic displays. Flowering Lanterns
This is a fun craft project that only takes five minutes. Cut tall ‘windows’ in a milk carton 7cm from the bottom and make a hole in the middle of the folded seam at the top. Spray the carton a cheerful colour and plant a hanging plant like bacopa in it. Feed a string or ribbon through the hole and hang a row of them on an open fence or pergola as flowering lanterns that swing cheerfully in the wind.
Strawberry Nursery
With an easy watering system, you can save space, recycle, and grow your own fruit and veg with no need to bend down: large plastic milk bottles are perfect for a horizontal kitchen garden. Keep the bottom 10cm of the bottle and cut away the front and part of the sides above that. You’ll find it easier to cut if you hold the knife in a candle flame briefly first. Punch a hole for drainage in the bottom with a bradawl. Screw the backs of the milk bottles onto a sunny fence to create perfect
containers for strawberry plants, herbs, radishes, garlic, snack cucumbers, peppers and cherry tomatoes. If you hang them above one another strategically, you only need to water the top row and the water will trickle down of its own accord. This way, you get freshly picked strawberries quickly and without too much effort.
Do The Can Can
A lick of paint can transform cans into cheerful pots. Make a hole in the bottom first so that surplus water can drain out. • Secure nine identical cans in a perfect square against the shed or fence and let a wild bloomer like a nasturtium or lathyrus run wild as a contrast. • Stick wallpaper borders on cans and varnish them for an original line-up on the windowsill. • Punch three holes in the top edge and hang the cans off the pergola filled with cheerful violas.
Do you forget to water your plants?
44
You can find out fairly easily whether your plant needs water. Poke the tip of your little finger into the soil. If it feels dry, your plant could do with a drink. • There are innumerable smartphone apps which help remind you to water your garden and houseplants. Enter the plant name in the app and it will tell you how often the plant needs to be watered on average. • Put the watering can by the front door. Before you go out the door in the morning you will then be reminded that your plants need some attention. • It’s also a good idea to link watering to another activity that you do every week, like putting the rubbish out or buying fresh flowers on Saturday morning. • There are all sorts of handy tools to help you keep your plants hydrated, such as fertiliser tablets or the Pikaplant tableaus.

qSummer Reading THE LITTLE RED CHAIRS By Edna O’Brien
When a wanted war criminal from the Balkans, masquerading as a faith healer, settles in a small west coast Irish village, the community are in thrall. One woman, Fidelma McBride, falls under his spell and in this astonishing novel, Edna O’Brien charts the consequences of that fatal attraction. The Little Red Chairs is a story about love, the artifice of evil, and the terrible necessity of accountability in our shattered, damaged world.
THE ROAD TO LITTLE DRIBBLING: MORE NOTES FROM A SMALL ISLAND By Bill Bryson
To mark the twentieth anniversary of Notes from a Small Island, Bryson makes a brand-new journey round Britain to see what has changed. Following a route he dubs the Bryson Line, from Bognor Regis to Cape Wrath, by way of places that many people never get to at all, Bryson sets out to rediscover the wondrously beautiful, magnificently eccentric, endearingly unique country that he thought he knew but doesn’t altogether recognize any more. Once again, with his matchless homing instinct for the funniest and quirkiest, his unerring eye for the idiotic, the endearing, the ridiculous and the scandalous, Bryson gives us an acute and perceptive insight into all that is best and worst about Britain today.
ALL INVOLVED By Ryan Gattis
That's when it hits me. I'm staring at a war zone. In South Central. On an April night in 1992, Payasa learns that her older brother has been stabbed to death, his body left out in the road to rot. He was never involved. He was innocent. He didn't even carry a gun. And that messes with the rules, even for Lynwood, even for the streets. But it's the first day of the LA riots, and the city is tearing itself apart. Firefighters, graffiti artists, nurses and law enforcement - all of them connected by this murder - find themselves caught in the mayhem. Every cop is distracted, and for the people who see the law as an enemy, it's a chance to settle old scores. That's just too good an opportunity to miss. 46
