HOST A BLOOMING GREAT TEA PARTY Whitley Bay’s Marie Curie Fundraising Group are calling on people across the City to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party in aid of the charity this June. From 23rd - 25th June, Marie Curie is encouraging people to get together with friends, family or colleagues to host a tea party, bake sale or special tea break to raise funds. The money raised will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their families. Debra Mitchell, Chair of the Whitley Bay Marie Curie Fundraising Group said: “Holding a Blooming Great Tea Party really is a piece of cake. Just pick a date, send out some invites and simply raise a cuppa between 23rd- 25th June. We’re delighted to have support from Whitley Bay businesses. Rock ‘n’ Roll in Monkseaton and Coffee Central have already signed up to host tea parties but we need more businesses, schools, community groups and residents to get behind the tea parties and raise funds to help Marie Curie support people when they need it most.” To find out more and receive your free fundraising pack, call 0800 716 146 or visit www.mariecurie.org. uk/teaparty.

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA): one for your health and one for your finances. They protect you and your loved ones while you are still alive. HANDS ON FUN AT ROCKPOOL SCHOOL FOR AN EXCITING WAY TO LEARN ABOUT SEA LIFE, LET YOUR CHILDREN PAY A VISIT TO ROCKPOOL SCHOOL.
B
est described as an attractive sea aquarium, a rockpool is an oasis at low tide for small sea-life creatures. Crabs, starfish, sea snails and many more marine species call rockpools home, and they are a fascinating environment to watch and study. Rockpools are an exciting way for children to learn about some of our sea life, but they can be quite hard to find. So, with this in mind, we are pleased to introduce you to a brand new Rockpool School, right here in the heart of North Tyneside, allowing children to experience first-hand the wonderful creatures and sea life that call rockpools home. Rockpool School was establish in March 2017 by Nicola Everitt who, after seeing the pure joy and excitement on children's faces who live so close to the coast but never manage to experience rockpool animals first-hand, saw an ideal opportunity to give them that chance. She established the school (which is ran by locally qualified Marine Biologists) to give local children a hands on rockpool animal fun and learning experience, offering workshops, birthday parties and school visits. Rebecca herself has always been interested in our seas and everything within them, and regards herself extremely lucky to be in the process of completing her PhD in Marine Science. She has been very honoured to have been able to carry out cetacean research, offshore wind farm 18

research and possible impacts on surrounding marine life. She has also been able to work with, and train, both seals and sea lions. She is therefore very passionate to be able to share what she has learnt in a fun and educational manner. Sessions provided by Rebecca are tailored to individual needs and workshop type, and include a variety of rockpool animals, including crabs, starfish, brittle stars, urchins, sea snails, hermit crabs and anemones. The individuals not only gain a hands on learning experience, they also learn amazing facts about these animals. She can tailor each workshop to every occasion, this may also include crafts, making of marine slime, crab lining, decorating treasure chests with sea glass and shells and many more. The school has already inspired many children to further their learning on this topic, with some even going on to attend Marine Biology Summer schools. The school has quickly earned a fantastic reputation, receiving 5 star rating from both schools and satisfied parents. Comments have included ‘very likely to recommend these session’, ‘very satisfied and would use the service again’, ‘children 100% benefit from the workshops’, ‘very pleasant staff and appropriate speak for the children's age’, ‘brilliantly interactive and hands on’. For more details about the school and upcoming events, visit www.rockpoolschool.co.uk or facebook. com/rockpoolschool or call Nicola on 07704 336457.

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a bowl and mix together. 4. Combine all the wet ingredients in a jug and pour onto the dry ingredients and mix together. Add the pea puree and mix thoroughly. 5. Pour the cake batter into the tin and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. 6. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

TIME FOR TEA
HOW AFTERNOON TEA BECAME A GREAT BRITISH TRADITION
W
imbledon, Harry Potter, fish and chips and rainy bank holidays - there are few things more quintessentially British. But one time-honoured tradition - that has soared in popularity over the last few years- is the grand old institution of afternoon tea. The story goes that afternoon tea as we know it was introduced in Britain by Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1840s. As an evening meal was served fashionably late at around 8pm, the duchess developed the habit of having tea in the afternoon and inviting her friends to join her. What started as a mini meal to stem the hunger before dinner - at the time it was usual for people to have only two meals a day - quickly escalated to become a glamorous social event for ladies who climbed the echelons of society. The pause for tea rose in prominence and popularity when Queen Victoria indulged in the ritual, elevating it to the status of a large, formal occasion, known as tea receptions. At the time, these receptions could welcome as many as 200 guests with an open invitation to visit between 4pm and 7pm, during which time guests could come and go as they pleased. Royal approval meant that Victorian socialites quickly followed suit and the practice became highly respectable. Upper class women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for afternoon tea, which was usually served in the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. Despite being much more accessible and affordable nowadays afternoon tea still retains a feeling of formality and style and offers a throwback to a gentler, more gracious way of living. It is usually enjoyed as an occasional indulgence or to celebrate a special event such as a birthday, Mother's Day or baby shower with friends. Once confined to the top class of society, afternoon tea can now be enjoyed by the masses in venues ranging from posh hotels to independent tearooms and even garden centres. Although there are no set rules about the content of
44
SUMMER IN NORTH TYNESIDE
a traditional afternoon tea, the menu usually comprises a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, delicately cut into fingers, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, a variety of homemade cakes and pastries and a choice of teas. Teas on offer usually include Assam, a strong, full-bodied tea from India, with a distinctive 'malty' flavour; the aromatic Darjeeling, with a hint of almonds and wild flowers; the favoured Earl Grey with its blend of black teas scented with oil of bergamot, named after Charles, second Earl Grey, who was prime minister from 1830 to 1834: and the striking lapsang Souchong, a Chinese tea fired over smoking pine needles. Occasionally you will see hotels advertising high tea. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve low or afternoon tea around 4pm, allowing them enough time for a stroll before their evening meat whereas the middle and lower classes would have a more substantial’ high’ tea later in the day, in place of dinner.
‘THE PAUSE FOR TEA ROSE IN POPULARITY WHEN QUEEN VICTORIA INDULGED IN THE RITUAL’ The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served - high tea being served at the dinner table - but today they simply reflect the time of day. Many hotels also offer a champagne afternoon tea for an additional charge which is a popular choice for special occasions. We may be a far cry from the old-fashioned stereotype of a nation of well-spoken toffs donning top hats and sipping Earl Grey, but afternoon tea is still a very much loved pastime in this country. Whether it be an occasional luxury in a posh hotel, a birthday treat at a country house, or a welcome sit-down at a cafe during a hectic day at shopping, it is now easier than ever to enjoy a little slice of British tradition.
