The Green, Wallsend DID YOU KNOW?
The Green, Wallsend is: • The oldest man made feature in the Borough of North Tyneside after the Roman Wall. • The only surviving ancient village green in North Tyneside and the nearest village green to Newcastle city centre. • The central feature of The Green, Wallsend Conservation Area. No-one knows when The Green came into existence, or why. The probable explanation is that when the Romans abandoned the fort of Segedunum in AD 454 the river bank was no longer a safe place for the local population to live, so they moved up the side of the valley to the present location of The Green and founded a new village there. 8
This must have been established, at the absolute latest, by the time that the Church of The Holy Cross was built c. AD 1150, in what is now the Burn Closes, to serve the needs of the inhabitants. It is probably much older.
THE VILLAGE OF WALLSEND
Until the middle of the 19th century the village of Wallsend consisted of a number of houses and farms clustered around and facing onto the village green itself. This basic arrangement survives today, although it has been compromised by the creation of wide side streets leading away from the village green. During the second half of the 19th century Wallsend became transformed into a sizeable town, the former fields north and south of The Green filled
with houses. Richardson Dees Park and further housing was created to the west. The village green survived, although reduced in size by the enclosure of land in front of The Red House (now forming the “private green” in front of Park Villas and Hawthorn Villas). The Green remains a closely-knit and very stable residential community. Many residents have lived there for the whole or a substantial part of their lives. Newcomers quickly recognise and appreciate the unique character of the area. As Lady Hale remarked in a recent decision of The Supreme Court concerning village greens: “….. many people are attracted to properties near a village green because of the recreational opportunities it offers and the community spirit which these engender – anyone who grew up with a traditional village green can understand the focus it brings to village life which would not be there if the green were not there.”
The local authority has ownership of the village green holding it on statutory trust for the local inhabitants. The Green is also the central feature of The Green, Wallsend Conservation Area designated on 1 November 1974. As such, North Tyneside Council is obliged in making planning decisions to have special regard to the need to preserve and enhance the character of the area, which is the subject of a Character Appraisal adopted by the Council on 11 April 2007. There is an active residents association whose aim is to promote and maintain the character of this historic site. Visit thegreenwallsend.org for more information.
STATUTORY PROTECTION
The Wallsend Village Green ByeLaws 1908 are believed to be still in existence. The Green is also registered as a village green under the Commons Registration Act 1965. This prevents any development of the land comprising the village green itself, which must be preserved as being “land on which the inhabitants of [the] locality have a customary right to indulge in lawful sports and pastimes”. 9
What's Happening... VINTAGE CARS
STALLS
There will be around 15 stalls outside of the Forum Shopping Centre selling a range of goods, including crafts, jewellery, handmade soaps, food produce and more.
10
A range of vintage cars will be driving in to the town centre as part of the festival. The classic cars will be on display along High Street East, and car lovers can take a look inside the cars while speaking to the owners to find out some interesting facts. The cars have all been restored and modified, many still with their original owners and often appearing in rallies across the UK.
WALLSEND LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
The Wallsend Local History Society will return for another year to enlighten us all on Wallsend’s historic past and how it has shaped the world we live in today. Find them in the Customer First Centre.

WALLSEND BUSINESS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF TRADING This year sees Amanda Glen Unisex Hair Studio celebrate 10 years of trading in her High Street East salon.
Amanda Glen in her High Street East salon
The longevity of Amanda Glen’s Unisex Hair Studio is testimony to the quality of her work and the levels of service she offers. The hair studio is one of the longest established in the town, and that speaks volumes about Amanda and all of the staff. Not only is she one of the longest established salons, she is also one of the most cutting edge, as she is constantly keeping up to date with new styles and techniques. Having learnt her trade in North Shields, it was cutting edge hair styling that really drove Amanda’s passion, and she broadened her horizons and experience by spending almost a decade in London working in some of the top salons, gaining valuable experience. Following her successful spell in the capital, Amanda decided to widen her experience 16
even further, and opened up a salon in Amsterdam. ‘Wild Hair’ proved a huge hit in the Dutch capital, and led to Amanda doing numerous hair exhibitions in Amsterdam’s world famous club scene. Having gained all this experience, when Amanda eventually decided the time was right to move back home, she opened her own salon in 2007 in Wallsend, and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The salon prides itself on its fully trained staff, and Amanda is constantly updating her services and techniques to cater for the needs of both her existing and new clientele. Amanda herself specialises in cutting (including razor cutting), colouring and perming, as well as children’s and men’s cuts, and offers discounts on a Tuesday and
The salon offers a range of hair cutting and colouring services as well as beauty by Bluemoon Beauty.
Wednesday for senior citizens. Amanda’s own personality ensures a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and when you add the new beauty services on offer, the affordable prices, and her wealth of experience, she believes that she can provide a top level service without the hassle and prices of a visit to the city centre. Amanda welcomes Debi, who owns and runs Bluemoon Beauty, to her salon. Bluemoon Beauty offers a full range of waxing services, nail treatments and much more. Debi, originally from Battle Hill has, like Amanda, a very colourful and broad working history, meaning she also brings a wealth of experience and cutting edge styles to Amanda’s salon. After moving away from the North East due to her husband’s job in the forces, she ran a mobile beauty business in Surry, and then a home salon in Germany for nearly 7 years. Back in the UK she worked in Wiltshire until the time was right to move back home. Every time she moved she built a business up from scratch, building up a loyal client base everywhere she went due to the high standard of her work.
Debi is bringing all her training, experience and variety of cultures to the salon, and offers acrylic nails, gel manicures and pedicures, waxing and lash and brow treatments. She always wants to be challenged with different ideas and designs when it comes to nails, and is on hand to offer advice and ideas. Not forgoing the other areas of beauty she specialises in, Debi also keeps up to date with her training and pays attention to detail in all aspects of beauty, whether its waxing, lash or brow treatments. Debi feels it is important for client to leave the salon feeling they have been pampered and had the one to one treatment they deserve. She has known Amanda for over 20 years so, when she moved back to the area, and with Amanda wanting to offer beauty treatments to her clients, it was the perfect match and the two businesses complement each other perfectly. So, if you are looking for a fresh new look, or even just a change from your normal salon, make sure you call Amanda or Debi. 196a High Street East, Wallsend, NE28 7RP Tel: 0191 262 4224 17

HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN
In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care.
32
What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.
What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.
For more information, please contact Eothen’s Head Office on 0191 281 9100 or email enquiries@eothenhomes.org.uk

HANDS ON FUN AT ROCKPOOL SCHOOL
For an exciting way to learn about sea life, let your children pay a visit to Rockpool School Best described as an attractive sea aquarium, a rockpool is an oasis at low tide for small sea-life creatures. Crabs, starfish, sea snails and many more marine species call rockpools home, and they are a fascinating environment to watch and study. Rockpools are an exciting way for children to learn about some of our sea life, but they can be quite hard to find. So, with this in mind, we are pleased to introduce you to a brand new Rockpool School, right here in the heart of North Tyneside, allowing children to experience first-hand the wonderful creatures and sea life that call rockpools home. Rockpool School was establish in March 2017 by Nicola Everitt who, after seeing the pure joy and excitement on children's faces who live so close to the coast but never manage to experience rockpool animals first-hand, saw an ideal opportunity to give them that chance. She established the school (which is ran by locally qualified Marine Biologists) to give local children a hands on rockpool animal fun and learning experience, offering workshops, birthday parties and school visits. Nicola herself, has always been interested in our seas and everything within them, and regards herself extremely lucky to be in the process of completing her PhD in Marine Science. She has been very honoured to have been able to carry out cetacean research, offshore wind farm

research and possible impacts on surrounding marine life. She has also been able to work with, and train, both seals and sea lions. She is therefore very passionate to be able to share what she has learnt in a fun and educational manner. Sessions provided by Nicola are tailored to individual needs and workshop type, and include a variety of rockpool animals, including crabs, starfish, brittle stars, urchins, sea snails, hermit crabs and anemones. The individuals not only gain a hands on learning experience, they also learn amazing facts about these animals. She can tailor each workshop to every occasion, this may also include crafts, making of marine slime, crab lining, decorating treasure chests with sea glass and shells and many more. The school has already inspired many children to further their learning on this topic, with some even going on to attend Marine Biology Summer schools. The school has quickly earned a fantastic reputation, receiving 5 star rating from both schools and satisfied parents. Comments have included ‘very likely to recommend these session’, ‘very satisfied and would use the service again’, ‘children 100% benefit from the workshops’, ‘very pleasant staff and appropriate speak for the children's age’, ‘brilliantly interactive and hands on’. For more details about the school and upcoming events, visit www.rockpoolschool.co.uk or facebook. com/rockpoolschool or call Nicola on 07704 336457.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Alfresco Summer Lunch Easy to prepare ahead - leaving you time to enjoy the party and (hopefully!) the weather
SERVES 10 - 12
SLOW COOKED PORK SHOULDER The result of long, slow cooking is ultra tender, smoky-flavoured meat. ✻ 2tbsp fennell seeds ✻ 1 tbsp salt
✻ 1tbsp smoked paprika ✻ 1 tbsp olive oil
✻ 3-4kg pork shoulder, on
the bone, skin scored
✻ buns, to serve
1 Bash the fennel and salt in a pestle and mortar to grind., then mix with the paprika and oil. Heat the oven to Mark 7/240 C. Put pork on a board and rub all over with the fennel mix. Transfer to a rack set in a roasting tin and cook for 20 mins.
Tip Go to your local butcher for this cut. It’s really worth getting the meat on the bone as it will be more succulent. 42
2 Turn the oven down to Mark 1/140 C and pour 400ml water around the pork. Cook for 5-6 hours (or longer) until the meat is tender and falls off the bone. 3 Heat through the buns, shred the meat with 2 forks and let everyone dive in.

✻ 3 oranges ✻ 2 fennel bulbs finely slices ✻ 3 tbsp olive oil ✻ 2 tbsp Dijon mustard ✻ 2 x 30g bags of watercress ✻ small handful green olives
1 Segment the oranges over a bowl to catch the juice, squeeze out as much juice as possible. Toss the fennel in the juice, mix in the oil and Dijon mustard and season to taste. 2 Scatter the watercress, fennel and orange over a serving plate and drizzle over the extra dressing. Scatter with the sliced olives and serve.
