UPGRADE YOUR GARDEN
E
njoy your garden all year-round with a bespoke cabin or summerhouse from Plantsplus Garden Centre. From upgrading your potting shed or creating a space to socialise, we’ve asked our designer and expert, Cal Gowdy, to answer his most frequently asked questions before you jump in. Planning permission
Our buildings won’t need any planning permission as long you can tick off a few important things: You’re not building on the land of a listed building or within a conservation area; it’s not going in your front garden; it won’t take up more than 50% of your undeveloped garden. Heights can reach 4m, with anything over 2.5m requiring a 2m gap between the structure and the edge of your garden or fence.
Material
Our bespoke cabins and summerhouses at Plantsplus Garden Centre are made from kiln-dried Scandinavian or Baltic redwood which will reduce shrinkage. Bear in mind that there will be contraction and expansion with climatic conditions, so ensure you invest in a good paint or oil to keep it protected for longer. All our cabins have double-glazed windows, with the summerhouses being single glazed as standard. We don’t recommend using felt covering for your roof and instead pair our buildings with bitumen roof shingles or eco slates – 100% recycled and with the option of a few colours.
Heating
Your summerhouse or cabin comes with optional floor and roof insulation so you may want to think of having a power source for an electric heater in the cooler seasons. Whilst wall insulation and log burners are feasible, just be aware that they can double your
original cost and there are extra regulations to meet. Your height restrictions will also have to take into account any flue that reaches above the roof. A guttering kit is essential for looking after your external wooden walls, so put it to good use by collecting rainwater for your garden with an added water butt. In Summer the average household’s water use in the garden can spike to almost 70% of all water supplied, up from only 3% during the rest of the year. Not only will you be taking some strain off the environment, but you’ll be insuring yourself against hosepipe and sprinkler bans. Fancy learning more? Pop in to Plantsplus Garden Centre to view our show cabins and speak to a friendly member of our team. You’ll also find inspirational garden sheds, cabins, pods and much more on our NEW website www.plantsplus.co.uk also provides you with quality garden accessories that you won’t find in store.

SUNDAY NIGHT
INTRODUCING... THE RIVER COASTERS
T
he River Coasters are an indie two-piece based in Tynemouth. They are releasing a new EP this Summer, alongside a free launch gig at The Exchange in North Shields on July 20th. Here, Sam (lead vocals) and Jon (guitar) describe the songwriting process behind their coastal-themed music. Sam: Our new EP is called Drifting Sands, and it will feature a title track of the same name. Living by the sea has given our songs the imagery of breaking waves and windswept beaches - but we contrast this lyrical drama against upbeat rhythms. Jon: We like to use metaphors and tell short stories across our songs. They aren't always personal stories but we take inspiration from our surroundings. The song Drifting Sands has a laid back summer vibe, but has dark lyrics. We imagine a setting like Longsands Beach as the backdrop to a dramatic love story. Sam: The theme of longing for something or losing what you love appears in our music too. Our track Love Letter to the Sea tells a tale from the perspective of somebody longing to return to the coast that they know so well. It's a simple track that we feel people around us can relate to. Jon: Musically we work around a simple setup. I play the guitar and cajon in our live performances, and Sam accompanies lead vocals with a semi-acoustic ukulele. The combination of instruments has a nice blend, and makes for easy listening. It's a real pick-up-and-play arrangement. Sam: We like to play live in venues around the coast, where we live. The North East has a really nice music scene ideal for buskers, with places like the Surf Cafe (Tynemouth), the Left Luggage Room (Monkseaton) and of course The Exchange (North Shields). These are our favourite places to just show up and play, but also listen to the great variety of quality local music. Drifting Sands EP will be available on iTunes and Spotify on July 20th. You can follow The River Coasters on Twitter @RiverCoasters and on Facebook www.facebook.com/therivercoasters

FOOD REVIEW
TRADITIONAL FOOD AT IT’S BEST
We visit The Cherry Tree Bar & Grill in Stakeford to sample some home cooked dishes
F
orgoing the regular homemade sandwich, I decided that I would take a break from the usual lunchtime routine, and venture to the Cherry Tree in Stakeford for a midweek treat, with a work colleague in tow.
The Cherry Tree has been run by the Turner family since 2003, and currently Alex, Liz, Ryan and Scot oversee the running of the pub. The pub is situated on Stakeford Lane, the main road linking Stakeford to GuidePost, meaning it is easy to find, and there is plenty parking in their large car park. Once inside, we were both very impressed by what is a modern yet homely local pub. The venue is airy with a relaxed laid-back atmosphere, with a very spacious lounge and conservatory area for diners, flowing through in an open planned layout to a bar area and a second conservatory area playing host to a pool table, dart board and more seating for diners and drinkers to mix. Scot Turner is the head chef, and his menu is refreshingly not over crowded, leaning to traditional English dishes with offerings from the grill aplenty. There are light

GENEROUS: The ribeye steak
bites, lunchtime snacks and a range of breakfast options. I was also informed that most dishes are made, where possible, from locally sourced ingredients, a big thumbs up from us. My choice from the menu was the ribeye steak, served with a generous portion of home-made chips, onion rings, peas, mushrooms and tomatoes, whilst my colleague selected Gammon steak. He was very pleasantly surprised when, asked would he like egg or pineapple, he was given a rather unusual third option – or BOTH! I was shocked when he chose option number three, very out of character for him! The presentation of both dishes was well thought out, not your average pub grub plates! The chips were a throwback to my childhood days, when ‘chips were chips’, and almost stole the show! I say
almost as my steak was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked (medium) and full of flavour. My colleague gave similar feedback to his Gammon – but I did have to try it for myself too, (purely in the interests of research you understand!) and I had to agree with him – very nice! Being a midweek lunchtime, and with the main dishes being very hearty in taste and generous in size, we both thought it wise to skip dessert on this occasion - this article won’t write itself you know! Stepping outside into the midafternoon sun, my only regret was that I had to return to work, and couldn’t stay for one of their mouthwatering desserts! Oh well, on a positive note, I am only 10 minutes’ drive away - perfect distance for a taxi journey for our next visit so we can make it an extended one and add some liquid refreshments to our tab! NEXT STAGE OF PLANS FOR ASHINGTON TOWN CENTRE APPROVED Funding has been agreed towards a multimillion pound scheme to transform Ashington town centre.
The council’s Cabinet has approved a £4.6m loan to Advance Northumberland along with a £3m grant, to create a cinema and shopping centre at Portland Park. A report to Cabinet states: “If developed effectively, it is felt the site has the ability to transform Ashington and... reposition the town as a new retail and leisure led destination, driving footfall to boost the economy.” The funding will be used by Advance to develop a 17,000 square foot, seven screen cinema. The company has also been able to finalise terms with a major retailer that would deliver a 20,000 square foot retail store with over 100 car parking spaces. Finally a range of smaller shops will be built to encourage both national and local traders. The total estimated development budget is £8.6m, the majority of which is funding the development of the cinema. The remaining £1m funding would come from

the sale of the plot to a major retailer. Ken Dunbar, Managing Director of Advance Northumberland, said: “It’s immensely satisfying for everyone in Advance Northumberland who are involved in bringing this fantastic new mixed development and cinema attraction to Ashington, thereby building on the huge success of Ashington Leisure Centre and supporting the ongoing regeneration of the town.”

FOOD REVIEW
‘CATCH’ OF THE DAY FISH AND CHIPS ARE A REAL TREAT, ESPECIALLY AT THE AWARD WINNING PONTELAND SEAFOOD RESTAURANT ‘CATCH’, WRITES RICHARD WILSON
I
t is a common misconception, probably based on childhood memories, that fish and chips taste better when eaten at the seaside. Whilst there are some delightful chip shops and seafood restaurants sprinkled along our glorious Northumberland and North Tyneside coasts, venture inland and you will find a selection of some of the best the North East has to offer. Being a fish lover myself, and with my wife in tow, I decided to do exactly that, and the restaurant we chose to try was the award-winning Catch seafood restaurant on the outskirts of Ponteland. Building on the success of the Catch restaurants in West Vale and Holmfirth, Catch Seafood Ponteland is the third Catch restaurant and, as the name suggests, is a dedicated fish and seafood restaurant, located just off the A696 just outside of Ponteland. Entering through the main glass doors lit by a Catch sign, we were greeted by a host and shown to our table in the restaurant area. The bar and restaurant have a modern PERFECT: Sea bass and beef dripping chips
18
contemporary feel with an open glassfronted wine cellar, quirky lighting and a sleeper fronted chrome topped bar. The menu, as you would expect, is packed with an array of seafood selections, some classic, some very innovative. Although there is the odd non fish dish, if seafood is not to your liking then this menu is probably wasted on you, and vegetarians should certainly seek an alternative venue! For my starter I chose the King Scallops with roasted chorizo and garlic butter. If asked to describe the dish in one word it would be moreish! TASTY: King Prawn Battered Scampi
For my main course I ordered from the simply fish section of the menu. This section allows you to construct the dish yourself, by choosing your fish, 2 sides and a sauce to compliment the dish. My choices were - sea bass, beef dripping chips, spinach, accompanied by a thermidor sauce. Being a fish restaurant, you would expect that to be the star of the show, and it didn’t disappoint, crispy skin and perfectly cooked – the chips were a delight too! My wife chose the battered king prawn ‘scampi’, served with a fresh
salad, homemade tartare sauce and the same beef dripping chips. Very tasty were has comment on the king prawns (I can vouch for that as my folk did stray to her side of the table more than once) and she agreed with my summary of the chips. The restaurant area features an open kitchen, so we could watch the chefs at work, carefully preparing our dishes. We were told that the experienced team source the freshest and finest products from UK ports and pass them directly to the in-house award-winning chefs to create the dishes. Unfortunately, as I was driving on this occasion, I couldn’t sample anything other than a non-alcoholic beverage but, for those who desire, the drinks list includes a range of specially selected wines, spirits, beers, ales and seasonal cocktails to complement your meal. If you do want to make it an extended stay, or you are celebrating a special occasion, there are 5 large guest rooms available. The rooms, reminiscent of a Hamptons beach house, offer King-size beds and en-suite bathrooms, two rooms even feature a roll top bath! On the whole we found the restaurant décor and atmosphere very pleasant, and the food a delight. Although the menu is not cheap, we both agreed it was excellent value for money. So, what’s the catch? On our visit we couldn’t find one!

MISSING TEETH? JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, DISCUSSES THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO REPLACE A MISSING TOOTH OR TEETH
I
f you have a gap or spaces due to a missing tooth or teeth then there may or may not be a need to fill it. The need to fill a gap really depends on where it is and how it affects you, your oral health and also your general health and well-being.
Some people have a missing front tooth and the appearance does not concern them at all, however other people (me for instance) would not want to be without a front tooth. The options that are available generally fall into 4 main categories as described below, however every person needs to be specifically assessed by their dentist as every case is different and there will be circumstances where some options are suitable while others are not.
DO NOTHING
Sometimes the simplest and cheapest option is to do nothing. This can also be the best, but depends very much on where the gaps are. Loosing teeth can have a huge impact on people ranging from a negative psychological impact and lack of confidence socially due to missing front teeth, to not being able to chew food properly. The loss of a lot of teeth may also make your mouth and lips look sunken in. But if, for example, you have a space from a single tooth at the back of your mouth then you may not even notice too much of a
change in your appearance or function or health of your mouth and therefore you may think replacing it is not worth the time and cost of dental treatment.
DENTURES
Dentures can replace spaces from just one lost tooth (a partial denture) or the loss of all teeth, (a full denture). Unless retained by implants they are removable, which means you can take them in and out of your mouth yourself. It is important to be able to take dentures out to clean them but also to enable you to properly clean any natural teeth. Dentures involve false teeth being placed into a base material that is usually made from either a hard pink acrylic plastic, Valplast (a "flexible" nylon resin), or cobalt chromium metal. Each of these materials has their advantages and disadvantages, some of which are discussed below: Acrylic: This is a hard pink plastic material and tends to be the cheapest base material used. It can be used to make a range of dentures from replacing just 1 tooth, (a partial denture) to all your teeth, (a full denture). The pink acrylic rests on top of the gums, and how secure they are depends on how well they fit. They are usually easy to adjust and relatively inexpensive compared to the other denture materials Cobalt chrome: A metal denture base made with cobalt chrome may be a good alternative if you have had CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 23
CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE FLEXIBLE: ValplastÂŽ is a pink nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures
problems with an acrylic denture fracturing, as the metal base will not fracture. Dentures made of this metal are more expensive to make. Unlike an acrylic partial denture a cobalt chrome denture has the advantage of being able to be retained and supported with metal rests and clasps around some of the remaining natural teeth. This means it can be very secure in your mouth. Perhaps one possible disadvantage is very occasionally you may be able to see a very small amount of metal if a tooth nearer the front of your mouth is clasped, but your dentist would always endeavour to design the denture to reduce the chance of this happening. Although the denture base is made of metal the false teeth are white and attached to the metal with pink acrylic to look like natural gum and teeth. ValplastÂŽ: This is a pink "flexible" nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures only. It is supported only by your gums and does not have any metal clasps that will show. ValplastÂŽ will also give a life-time guarantee that the denture base will not fracture. Due to the flexibility of this material they are an alternative if you have had problems with an acrylic denture fracturing. There are certainly other advantages and disadvantages of all three denture materials, so without an examination with your dentist it would be difficult to determine what would be the best material for you. Every case where a denture is needed is different and needs to be assessed so the best material is used specifically for your requirements.
BRIDGES
Before I became a dentist, I did not have a clue what a bridge was. I am sure therefore there are many of you whom also do not know what they are. A bridge replaces a lost tooth or teeth by using either natural teeth or implants next to the gap and they are cemented in permanently. The natural teeth or implants beside the gap are used to support the false tooth/teeth. The proper dental term for the false tooth is the pontic and for the supports are called the abutments. They can be made from gold, metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic or a mixture of these materials. The pontic is permanently cemented to the abutment tooth. The natural teeth supporting the bridge must therefore be healthy and strong enough, just like the design of a bridge crossing a river; if the river is very wide, then mechanically a support on either bank may not be strong enough to support the crossing. Your dentist will examine and advise if the gap is suitable for a bridge. There are generally two reasons when a bridge is not suitable. The first is if the space to be filled is too long and secondly if the teeth at either side of the space are not strong and healthy enough to support it. There are generally 3 types of bridge. A fixed-fixed or conventional bridge involves attaching the pontic to abutment teeth on both sides of the gap.
24
This means the abutment teeth have to be drilled to the correct shape so a crown, or cap, will fit over the top of them. This procedure is destructive as the dentist needs to shape the abutment teeth with a drill and therefore there is always a risk of sensitivity or a problem with the nerve of the tooth at a later date. Your dentist will discuss the risks and benefits of any treatment with you. A cantilever bridge is when a single pontic is stuck to an abutment tooth with a crown on only one side of the gap. An acid etch or Maryland bridge is a small bridge replacing just a single tooth. The porcelain pontic is attached to a small metal wing which is cemented onto the back of only one tooth. The metal work is on the back so you cannot see it when you smile. Only the back of the abutment tooth needs to be slightly shaved and therefore there is very little drilling to be done. This type of bridge is much less destructive and therefore there is a smaller risk of sensitivity and nerve damage. Different bridge types also have their advantages and disadvantages, and may not be suitable for every gap. All cases are different and your dentist would need to assess your individual needs before planning a bridge.

IMPLANTS
It is my view that generally there is a huge misconception about implants. I'm sure some people think if they have poor teeth then they can simply have them removed and replaced with implants and then that's it! Job done and there is no maintenance! This could not be further from the truth as an implant still needs to be maintained and looked after. Just like a normal tooth an implant can have gum disease around it which can make it loose and fail. Not all implants will be a success and if they fail they have to be removed. What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone. An implant can be used to support just one false tooth, or multiple implants can be used to replace a full set of teeth. You have to have surgery to have an implant which involves the titanium post being screwed into the bone of either the upper or lower jaw. Before an implant is placed, you need to be assessed to determine if the condition of your jaw bone is good enough. There are also risk factors that need to be considered such as medical problems, smoking, the existing health of your teeth, gums and mouth as not everyone is suitable to have an implant. After surgery and once the bone has attached to the implant and it is strong then the false tooth or teeth are References www.valplast.com www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/bridgesand-partial-dentures www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/dental-health-bridges#1 www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/implants
then screwed into the implants. The implants need to be cleaned twice a day as part of your daily routine. Just like your natural teeth, implants will last longer the better you care for them. This also involves regular visits to the dentist to monitor and maintain them. It is vitally important that after you have implants you still go to the dentist regularly: having an implant does not mean you can forget about your teeth. Implants certainly do not come with a lifetime guarantee! The cost of implants varies but the price is definitely in the thousands not the hundreds. The parts are expensive to buy; they are like the Rolls Royce in replacing missing teeth. If I had a push bike, it would get me from A to B, just like a Rolls Royce, however if I needed a new tyre for my bike it would cost me 10s of pounds. However, If a needed a new tyre for my Rolls Royce (in my dreams I may add), then a new tyre would cost 100's of pounds. The point I am trying to make is the cost of the implant parts are expensive to buy initially but also to maintain and replace due to wear and tear. This has been a very brief whirlwind tour of all the options to replace missing teeth and is in no way a complete article. In summary there are many different options to replace a missing tooth or teeth. If you want to have a gap filled then it is best to visit your dentist and have a thorough assessment so they can discuss all the choices that suit your specific needs.

UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONAL EATING Sarah Howe, Director of 3 Curves fitness facility’s in the North East and a mother of two explains why your emotions may be making you overeat
D
o you tend to eat or overeat because you are happy? Sad? Bored? Anxious? Upset or Stressed? You’re not alone. It’s estimated that 75% of overeating stems from our emotions.
From an early age, you may have learned to use food as a way to cope with your feelings. Short-term this may provide relief, but it doesn’t address the root of the problem. And long-term, emotional eating may lead to weight gain because the comfort foods we often choose are high in calories, sugar, salt and fat. Experts define emotional eating as eating in a response to an emotion, rather than hunger, in order to suppress or pacify emotions. Stress at work, conflict within a relationship, recent health diagnosis, sleep deprivation, family finances, low self-esteem and other situations may lead to emotional eating. For most people, it’s the day to day stresses in life that lead to emotional eating. But why do we turn to food for comfort? The comfort foods we choose are foods we associate with pleasurable memories or experiences. This can lead to a vicious cycle – you have a bad day, you eat a bar of chocolate because that’s what you may have been given when you had a bad day at school, guilt sets in, and now you feel like you’ve sabotaged your diet, so you take another bite of chocolate. But there is good news! You don’t have to turn to food. With these steps, you can process your emotions in a healthy way without turning to food. It’s time to break this cycle because YOU CAN! Here are some tips to overcome emotional eating. • Identify what emotion causes you to overeat. At Curves, we call these Cues to identify your triggers that cause you to overeat. • Before you eat, take a few minutes to understand how you are feeling. Are YOU in control or are your emotions in control? Before you eat, make sure you’re in a good place emotionally. • Connect with your Community. Remember, 75% of overeating stems from emotions. You’re not alone! Connect with other women at your local Curves club, 28

Or, grab a good book, watch a funny movie, volunteer in your community, visit a local museum or cultivate a new hobby. Toss out tempting foods. Create a fresh start for yourself and throw away any comfort foods. There is no reason to test your willpower! Instead, keep healthy snacks on hand like carrots & hummus or celery & cottage cheese. Exercise regularly. Exercising regularly can actually boost your mood. All the more reason to visit Curves and walk regularly! Satisfy cravings healthfully. Try making a lower calorie version of your favourite foods. Or, when you’re craving something sweet, choose an option from the Dessert guide on Curves Complete. Simply replace one of your snacks with a dessert choice. Delay Gratification. Instead of giving into your cravings, drink a glass of water and wait 20 minutes to see if you still want the food. Rather than saying “I can’t have that” use a positive phrase such as “I don’t eat that.” Or, say “later” rather than “never” so that you don’t feel deprived. Reward your progress healthfully. Buy that new top you’ve been eyeing, invite a friend to a spa or buy a new bike. Reward your weight loss efforts with something other than food. Get enough Sleep. Sleep deprivation can make it harder to tame your emotions and resist cravings. Aim for 7-9 hours a night of sleep each night.
We have the power to stop emotional eating by taking one step at a time – identify the emotion, find an alternative, and cultivate a new habit. Remember, by understanding what leads to emotional eating, we can take the necessary steps to change it. For more information on Curves Fitness visit www.curves.eu/uk

5 TOP TIPS TO START YOU ON A DECLUTTERING JOURNEY CATH HINDLE IS A PROFESSIONAL DECLUTTERING AND ORGANISING EXPERT BASED IN CULLERCOATS
Cath Hindle
I
f I had £1 each time somebody told me that they couldn’t get rid of something because their mother in law / friend / next door neighbour had given it to them; I’d be writing this from the Maldives. Gift giving and receiving is one of the key reasons we allow clutter into our homes and one of the key things to tackle if you’d like calm and ordered living space. I hear many reasons for not getting rid of things and I remind clients of a quote that has proved invaluable to me in my own quest for a simplified, organised free life: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” William Morris One of the most joyous parts of my business is finding the right home for unwanted things. Whether you recycle, give to charity, pass on to a friend or actually use the dustbin, here are a few top tips to start you on a decluttering journey: 1. START SMALL - don’t overwhelm yourself with a huge project to start with. I often ease clients into decluttering by starting off with that drawer in the kitchen – you know, the one with flyers, sellotape, a few elastic bands, an old fuse, phone charger and perhaps some cutlery. By starting off with a small space or area, you quickly get to see and feel the satisfaction of clearing and organising. 38
2. DON’T BUY STORAGE BOXES - it’s more clutter!! Friends of my facebook page will be familiar with #nostorageboxes. Existing baskets, shoe boxes, clear cupboards and drawers generally mean that the storage space is there – you just need to use it effectively. 3. YES, NO, MAYBE - there are lots of strategies on how to successfully declutter. Mine is to sort whichever space you are organising into three – “yes”, “no” and “maybe” piles. When finished, re-sort your “yes” pile into stuff going back into the space you have cleared and stuff to be put back elsewhere. Sort your “no” pile into things to sell, recycle, re home or throw away. Then turn your attention to your “maybe” pile and try to reduce it further by adding to your sorted “no” stuff. Whatever is leftover, think about the William Morris quote above to decide what you actually need to keep. 4. IDENTIFYING THE CLUTTER – The following highlights some of the things you should let go of now: Items you “should” use but don’t (exercise bikes). Things that cost a lot but you still don’t use (often clothes). Anything broken or inoperable that you are planning on fixing
• • •
• • • • • •
but haven’t (lamps) Heirlooms – see gift guilt (always pictures) Anything uncomfortable (see expensive clothes point) Duplicates – just in case. Magazines you’ll never get round to reading. Old electronics especially cables. Out of date paperwork
5. REMOVE IT FROM YOUR HOME The biggest mistake people make when embarking on decluttering is to think that once they’ve sorted their stuff, the job is done. Don’t make grand plans to put stuff on Ebay if you haven’t got the time or inclination. Make sure you take stuff to the charity shop and don’t just leave it in the boot of your car (and make sure you gift aid – it’s very satisfying). If passing on to friends or family, actually hand the item over. Whatever you decide to do, make sure the stuff leaves your house. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. CHILDREN’S EYE HEALTH YOUR CHILD’S EYES ARE SPECIAL. IN THE EARLY YEARS, VISION HELPS THEM FIND OUT ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND THEM. R GREEN & PARTNERS OPTICIANS EXPLAIN WHY VISITING AN OPTICIAN IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR CHILD’S EYE HEALTH
T
he majority of us parents are keen to take our children along to see healthcare professionals such as GP’s and health visitors, for the routine checks that are offered, and most will take their kids to visit the dentist from an early age. But what about taking them for an eye test with an optician? In a survey of 1000 parents 30% admitted to never taking their children to see the optician, despite many being concerned about eye health, and interestingly (worryingly?), about 60% were confident that they would spot warning signs of eye problems themselves. Children undergo a rudimentary vision check by the health visitor at about 18 months but in many areas there is no other formal screening program. The College of Optometrists identified that fewer than a third of councils offered school eye screening at the recommended age of 4-5 years contrary to national screening guidelines. Here in Northumberland, there is an established vision screening service in place where schoolchildren in this age group are examined by orthoptists and those suspected of having problems are referred either to accredited opticians, or direct to
an ophthalmologist, for further assessment. All children under 16 years of age in the UK are eligible for NHS funded eye examinations and for help with the cost of spectacles through the NHS voucher scheme, so gone are the days of NHS glasses- most opticians will offer spectacles at the voucher value, so free to the child. Good vision is important for social and academic development, and many youngsters with vision problems may not show any outward signs. As is usually the case, many problems are best managed if detected early. The NHS recommends an eye examination for children every two years as a minimum, and there is no lower age limit for them to attend their optician. Generally, we would recommend a first routine eye examination at about 3 to 5 years of age, but earlier if problems are suspected. There are some things parents can look out for. An eye appearing to turn in or out, not necessarily all of the time, excessive rubbing of eyes, headache, difficulties with concentration and sitting too close to the TV. Teachers sometimes alert parents when pupils struggle to see whiteboards or OHP’s at school. If either or both parents have eye problems, particularly if it’s a lazy eye, then their children should
definitely be examined from an early age. However, many youngsters with eyesight problems have no symptoms or family history at all. Whilst, with very young children, the optician is not going to be able to perform the range of tests normally carried out in an adult eye examination, an assessment of vision, exclusion of squint, estimation of refractive error and an examination inside the eye should all be possible. In other words, enough to identify problems or reassure the concerned parent. There are things we can all do as parents to help. Encouraging an active lifestyle with at least 2 hours outdoor activity each day, and a sensible diet, are ideal. Limiting screen time, with TV’s, computers, smart-phones and tablets all implicated; there is strong evidence that excessive close work, especially in poor light, encourages eye defects such as short sight (myopia) in young eyes. The best thing to do however, is to take your child for regular eye examinations with an optometrist. More information can be found at www.aop.org.uk/patients.
