GARDENING TRENDS Mark and Stew from Plantsplus Garden Centre share their gardening trends for 2019

W

hilst the weather doesn’t make for a great time spent in the garden you can still keep gardening on your mind by preparing for the year ahead. We’re looking at 2019’s trends so that you’re raring to go in March when the ground begins to warm up again.

6

THE ‘COTTAGE GARDEN’

Don’t think that you need an actual cottage or a country garden to match with this trend showing strongest in smaller garden areas such as patios, balconies and porches. Apparent last year at Plantsplus Garden Centre and continuing to be popular due to their simplicity in care are traditional Perennials and Herbaceous (no woody stems above the ground). Their variety in shape, colour and texture can help to bring the feeling of the countryside into urban environments without growing too large or having to maintain over winter.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

If your current planters are needing a new lease of colour you can fill in some bare spaces with a little compost and plant up some of our winter bedding packs.

GROW YOUR OWN

You can’t ignore that we’re all becoming a little more eco-conscious and aware of where our food is from which makes this trend unsurprising. The everpopular tomato will never go out of fashion but try a dwarf variety this year to pop into a window planter to save space – lettuce, spring onions and chillies are also great for this, whether indoors or outdoors. There has been resurgence in vegetables that need an extra bit of attention to grow and have become a hit with modern outdoor hobbyists. Homegrown artichokes and asparagus can be tricky in containers but can provide a great sense of achievement once ready to harvest, especially when you don’t have a plot to plant vegetables straight into the ground.

CONTAINER PLANTING

Every year we plant up thousands of hanging pots and patio planters with bright, bold colours that should last you through the winter and summer seasons. We put a lot of thought into their arrangement and ease of care so that you can spend your time enjoying them, rather than tending to them. If your current planters are needing a new lease of colour you can fill in some bare spaces with a little compost and plant up some of our winter bedding packs before you invest in your summer arrangement. If you’re still a little pushed for space outside your home or flat, living walls can make a decorative alternative to planters. Affix them to any wall or fence (inside or outside) and fill with herbs, nasturtiums, grasses or bedding plants. Living walls can hide a multitude of sins, be changed frequently with the seasons and are easy to move. You can find some more inspiration by visiting our own living walls planted on the front of our garden centre and a demonstration video inside our foyer.

NORTH SHIELDS ARTIST TO HEADLINE MOUTH OF THE TYNE FESTIVAL

T

he 15th annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place this summer, with shows from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th July in the surroundings of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and this year features a local North Shields artist as one of the headline acts!

North Shields born artist Sam Fender is headlining the main stage on Thursday night. The Brits Award Critics Choice 2019 winner will bring his alternative rock style to Tynemouth to kick off what is likely to be a big summer for the up and coming performer. Friday sees solo acoustic star Jack Savoretti headlining the main stage. The London based artist has 6 studio albums behind him and brings a set list packed with hits. The headline act on Saturday is an 80's legend - Rick Astley! The 'Never Gonna Give You Up' hitmaker has sold over 40 million records worldwide and will be playing a mix of old classics as well as songs from his recently released album 'Beautiful Life'. The Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place in Tynemouth and is a four day cultural celebration of live music, dance and arts by the sea, attracting around 100,000 people. Live music concerts take place in the grounds of English Heritage property Tynemouth Priory and Castle. Local street food pop-ups trade under festoon lighting whilst festival go-ers gather around shipping bobbins and on reclaimed driftwood seats. There’s a jazz stage outside the Priory next to a welcoming pub overlooking the sea. A free programme of 8

international street theatre provides the entertainment. Hundreds of local children learn new music skills in the weeks leading up to the event and participate in a colourful parade to kick things off. Surf lessons take place a stone’s throw away and cruise ships enter the River Tyne just beyond the headland. There’s an innovative programme of dance and one-off attractions on the platforms of Grade II listed Tynemouth Station, as well as evening concerts at the Playhouse Whitley Bay and Tynemouth’s Surf Café. The festival will also feature a free programme of events including international street entertainment, live jazz music and a children’s pageant. This event does not have camping but there are a number of hotels, hostels and guest houses in the area. RECIPE

TIP

HAND HELD LAMB & CHORIZO PIES

This recipe works well with beef mince too.

Prep Time 35 Mins

These mouth-watering hand held pies, inspired by Scotch eggs are a portable lunch option that can be served hot or cold. Lean lamb mince is combined with chorizo sausage, spring onions, herbs and quail eggs are encased in shortcrust pastry and served with a home made spiced tomato relish.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

✽ 375g/12oz lean lamb mince ✽ 2 spring onions, finely chopped ✽ 50g/2oz chorizo sausage, finely chopped ✽ 30ml/2tbsp freshly chopped flatleaf parsley ✽ Salt and freshly milled black pepper ✽ 2 x 320g packs shortcrust pastry ✽ 12 quail’s eggs, hard-boiled ✽ Beaten egg, to glaze

• •

FOR THE SPICED TOMATO RELISH

✽ 15ml/1tbsp rapeseed or olive oil ✽ 1 small red onion, peeled and finely chopped ✽ 1 x 200g can chopped tomatoes ✽ 5ml/1tsp caster sugar ✽ Pinch dried chilli flakes ✽ 15ml/1tbsp good balsamic vinegar 10

• • • • •

Cook Time 25 Minutes Serves 6 People

To make the filling, in a large bowl mix together the mince, spring onions, chorizo and parsley. Season. On a lightly floured surface roll the pastry to a thickness of a one pound coin and cut out twelve 9cm/3½in circles to fit a 12-hole greased muffin tin. Cut twelve 7cm/2¾in circles for the lid. Gently press the large pastry circles into the holes of the muffin tins and half fill with a portion of the mince mixture. Top with a quail egg then a final layer of the mince mixture to cover. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 6, 200°C/400°F. Brush the edges with the beaten egg, then place the lid on top, pressing the edges together to seal. Brush the tops with the remaining egg and make a hole in the centre for any steam to escape. Bake the pies for 25 minutes, then leave to cool in the tin. Meanwhile, prepare the relish; heat the oil in a non-stick pan. Cook the onions for 2-3 minutes, or until soft. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. Serve the pies with the relish (both the pies and the relish taste great hot or cold).

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM FUTURE CARE FEES Your home may be at risk

I

n the past five years one million family homes have had to be sold to pay for care. Homes that were going to be the children’s inheritance.

Should you need to go into care in later life, your assets will be means tested by the local authority. If the value of your assets, including your home, exceeds £23,250 you will have to pay full care fees. The average cost of care is now in excess of £30,000 a year.

HOW CAN WE LEGALLY PROTECT OUR HOME FROM CARE FEES?

There are many 'myths' about protecting your home, such as giving it away to your children (not recommended) the 7 year rule (applies to Inheritance Tax NOT care fees) Common Law Marriage (no such thing in the UK) etc. It is important to receive the correct advice when considering how to protect, so local authorities will not regard it as deliberate deprivation of assets.

MIRROR WILLS

If in your wills you leave everything to each other, and then to the children (mirror wills) you may unintentionally gift the full home to the local authority, should surviving spouse go into care. The children could then be left with very little.

PROPERTY TRUST WILLS LEGALLY PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM CARE FEES

Instead of leaving your share of the home to each other on first death, with Property Trust Wills, you each leave your share of the home in trust (ring fenced) for the children, stating they are not to receive it during the lifetime of the surviving spouse, who retains the FULL USE of the home. Should surviving spouse go into care, that half of the home in trust is legally protected from care fees. Guaranteeing at least half the value of your home for your children. If surviving spouse does not go into care, your full home passes to the children on the death of surviving spouse as per your wills. Spouse and children could be the executors, trustees and beneficiaries.

By spending a few hundred pounds now on Property Trust Wills, you can legally protect at least half the value of your home for your children. The cost also includes free probate advice at the time it is needed. If requested, money left on first death to surviving spouse, could also be protected by Money Trusts written into your wills. Surviving spouse could access capital and income from the trust. If surviving spouse goes into care, the money in the trust is safeguarded from care fees. Spouse and children could be the trustees and beneficiaries. Both the Property and Money Trusts protect your children’s inheritance in the event of: Surviving spouse remarrying, Going bankrupt, Changing their will, Children divorcing, IHT mitigation etc. Ask our adviser to explain. All trust wills are drafted by our experienced solicitors who specialise in this field. Trust Wills do not come into effect until first death. Whilst both of you are alive you are still able to sell your home and buy another, spend your money or save your money. Your assets remain under your control. We also recommend Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) which enable your family to legally manage your affairs for your benefit, should you become unable to. Without LPA’s the Court of Protection would take control of your finances. The Local Authority would take control of your welfare, including deciding where you would live. LPA’s can only be made whilst you have mental capacity. They are important. Please ask our adviser to explain. Our service is fully inclusive, our qualified solicitors, who are insured and regulated Members of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) will draft your trust wills to reflect your own requirements. We personally deliver the completed documents to you. Our adviser would also oversee and guide you through the signing process, as it is important that legal documents are signed and witnessed correctly to ensure validity. WORK UNDERWAY TO IMPROVE FOOTPATHS IN TOWN CENTRE New flagstones are being laid on the western side of Station Road after improvements to the eastern side in 2018.

The scheme supports a commitment by North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE to prioritise footpath improvements. She said: “I know how important the condition of roads and pavements is to our residents. By prioritising and investing in footpath improvements, dozens of additional schemes have been delivered right across the borough. I welcome this further work in Station Road, Wallsend, which will complement improvements in the area last year.” The previous improvements in Wallsend were to the eastern side of Station Road, between the junction of High Street East and Hawthorn Grove. The work to the western side of Station Road is from the junction of High Street West to the junction

of David Street. The existing paving, immediately adjacent to the highway, is being replaced with new flagstones. Subject to factors such as the weather, the scheme will be completed in early April. Pedestrian diversions will be clearly signposted. A site compound has been established on Elton Street East, near Wallsend Customer First Centre, which has required the temporary suspension of disabled parking bays at this location.

LOCAL DOG LOVERS SOLUTION TO MODERN DAY LONELINESS

V

olunteer dog cuddling is being offered by Barking Mad, Washington, North and South Tyneside as an antidote to the problem of loneliness in modern society.

For those who are retired or work from home and are spending large periods of time alone, caring for a waggy tailed companion on a temporary basis and meeting other like minded dog lovers could really help with feelings of isolation. The perception of loneliness as mainly an issue for the older generation is now proving inaccurate, as a study for the Office for National Statistics suggests that young adults are more likely to feel lonely than older age groups. Due to huge advances in technology, the number of freelancers and remote workers is rising, with an article in Business Leader claiming that "a third of business owners think that workforce will work remotely by 2020". Sue Seward from Barking Mad Washington said "whilst remote working has many advantages, working alone under pressure and not having the physical presence of a team to support you can lead to loneliness that cannot be fixed by any kind of app. Caring for a dog not only provides canine cuddles (far better than a virtual hug) but also the motivation to go and take a walk at lunchtime, increasing the likelihood of adhering to New Year fitness resolutions.

20

The community of Barking Mad Host families mainly consist of active retired people and those who either work from home or have extended periods away from work. It offers the opportunity to care for dogs in your own home, while the dog's Owners are away on holiday. Hosts experience all of the benefits of dog companionship without any of the emotional or financial responsibilities of full time pet ownership and Sue provides full support at all times in case any problems arise.

“

Caring for a waggy tailed companion on a temporary basis and meeting other like minded dog lovers could really help with feelings of isolation.

ENJOYING INDEPENDENT LIFE WITH EOTHEN HOMES In 2016 Eothen Homes, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home in Wallsend for people living with dementia. On the site are eight apartments available to rent, which have been specifically designed for the over 75s. Here residents Doreen and Denton Gunn, both 83, tell us why it’s a lovely place to live.

E

othen Homes Wallsend has secured a reputation as a groundbreaking dementia facility, ideal for those who wish to live independently within a safe and secure environment. Why did you choose Wallsend and why Eothen Homes particularly? We were both living in another home not far from Wallsend and heard about Eothen Homes through Denton’s niece, who decided it was the perfect place for her Mum (his sister) to stay. Denton has Alzheimer’s and we knew a time would come when we’d need additional help. While we live independently, we are now in the perfect place to source that, as needed. As for Eothen Homes, it had a nice feel and although we didn’t choose it for its Christian ethos, it’s nice to be somewhere where the team really cares about the residents, which is clear from the start. What’s good about the design of the home and in particular your flat? The design of Eothen Homes, Wallsend is lovely. There are landscaped gardens we can enjoy and anyone living in the flats has the use of a private lift to take us up to the second floor. There is a roof top area, which will be nice when the weather is better, a cafe and also an atrium with birds, which we enjoy. Cleaning services, laundry and meals are available at a cost but we don’t use those facilities at the moment as

22

we like to go out and do our own shopping and cleaning. There are lots of buses we can catch nearby when we want to have a day out locally. We love our flat. We can spend our time together, it’s really calm and cosy and we have decorated it to our own taste. The kitchen is twice the size of the one we had before, the bathroom is roomy and the bedroom is spacious too. It has everything we need really. We’re both looking forward to our daughter visiting from Australia next year so we can show it off to her. Tell us about the team at Eothen The team here are very kind and go out of the way to ensure we are ok. We also get invited to meetings downstairs where we can learn about any activities taking place and give ideas about what we’d like to do. We like to walk at Richardson Dees Park, which is just over the road but if we want to do something different, everyone does whatever they can to make it happen. It’s a very nice place to live. NORTH TYNESIDE NETS £500,000 FOR NEW ARTIFICIAL GRASS PITCH A state-of-the-art sports pitch will be installed in Killingworth after North Tyneside Council netted half a million pounds in funding.

The council has been awarded a grant from the Football Foundation – the UK’s largest sports charity funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government (via Sport England) – to install a new third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP) at Amberley playing fields. The local authority worked with the Football Foundation and the Northumberland FA to secure the £500,000 grant from the Football Foundation towards the project which will cost £750,000 in total. Killingworth Young People’s Club (KYPC) helped to develop the bid and will manage the new pitch on behalf of the community. It will enable the council to provide a first-class playing surface, supporting grassroots football as well as a host of other sports and community activities. North Tyneside Council’s cabinet agreed to accept the grant and pledged the additional funds needed to make the scheme a reality. Councillor Sarah Day, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: “I welcome this funding with open arms, and I’m delighted that we will be able to provide such a great facility for the community as part of an overall investment totalling £750,000. As well

as being a great example of partnership working between the council and the club, the pitch will be a fantastic asset for the community in Killingworth, creating a modern venue that will host a range of sports and leisure activities, as well as opportunities for local people to maintain a fit and active lifestyle. Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Since 2000, the Football Foundation has awarded 188 grants worth £12.4m across Northumberland County FA towards grassroots sports projects worth £11.8m and it is great to hear that North Tyneside Council will be the latest beneficiary. “Funding from the Football Foundation supports the development of brand-new facilities for local communities. Made possible by investment from the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England, the Foundation is supporting the grassroots game by improving access to high-quality football facilities across the country.” Construction is due to start in the summer.

LIFE CHANGING: Wendy Dougal before and after her weight loss

NORTH TYNESIDE RESIDENT LOSES OVER 13 STONE AT WW WORKSHOPS Wendy Dougal of North Shields felt that she ‘had to do something’ after finding out that her husband, David, was terminally ill, which meant she had to become his carer. Here’s her story...

I

n June 2016 I found out my husband was terminally ill. At that time I weighed 26 stone 3lbs and could barely care for myself. I couldn't walk more than 5 minutes and I was constantly in pain but I had to become my husband's carer!

We had to give up our jobs and lost our home. I knew I had to do something to enable me to care for my husband so on 4th January 2017 I joined WW (previously Weight Watchers) . I have now lost 13 stone 1lb. I still have 1 stone 2lbs to lose but I have totally changed my life! Initially, alongside my healthy eating, I started taking very short walks of just 5 minutes twice a day. As I started to lose weight I found I could gradually increase this much FACE TO FACE: Wendy has never looked back since joining WW

28

to my little dog, Lexie's, excitement! It was slow and small increments but gradually I was walking further and further. While attending my WW Workshops my coach mentioned a charity 5k walk in aid of St Oswald's Hospice. Despite 5k feeling like a marathon to me at that point I signed up! I had a few months to get myself walking further and each day I saw better results. Finally the day arrived and I was quite nervous but I did it! I was a bit stiff and sore the next day but so proud of myself. After this first challenge I never looked back. I joined a gym and started working out 3 times a week and even gave Zumba a try! After a while I decided I needed a new challenge and started the Couch to 5k running programme. It seemed so hard at first and I never thought I would complete it but 9 weeks later I did it! I really can't quite believe I am the same person I was! From being unable to walk and in constant pain to joining Curves and doing strength training there 3 times a week, walking for 1 hour every day and completing the Couch to 5k running programme! I am now more than capable of giving my husband the care he needs. I attend the WW Workshop at Linskill Centre, North Shields on Wednesdays at 10am with Diamond Wellness Coach Julie Watson, but I have also become a WW Wellness Coach too, running workshops in St Andrews Church in Monkseaton and St Hilda's Church in North Shields. MORE CHILDREN THAN EVER ARE GETTING ON THEIR BIKES!

M

ore than 1,700 children in North Tyneside have learned how to cycle safely over the last year – and the number is set to keep growing.

Throughout 2018, a total of 1,743 pupils from local schools took part in Bikeability sessions, which are organised by North Tyneside Council – a record number for a 12 month period. A further 250 children are expected to complete the popular programme over the next three months. The training programme is designed to give youngsters the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on the roads. Described as cycling proficiency for the 21st century, Bikeability is split into different levels with the first giving children basic bike-handling skills before progressing onto teaching basic, and then more advanced, road skills. Cllr Sarah Day, North Tyneside Council’s Cycling Champion and Cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure, said: “It’s fantastic to hear that so many children have taken advantage of this vital cycle safety training – it is so important that they are taught the skills to stay safe out on the roads. There are so many benefits to getting on two wheels; it’s great for the environment and your health so it is really good news that so many of our young people are taking up the activity." “We work hard to ensure that every child in the borough is given the chance to take part in the free scheme and I know how popular the sessions are so I look forward to seeing many more complete the course over the coming months. We take promoting sustainable forms of travel really seriously here in North Tyneside and as Cycling Champion I would urge anyone thinking about getting involved to take a look at the training and support on offer.” 30

As part of the Bikeability training, certificates and badges are awarded when pupils successfully complete the course and they are encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels. Pupils from Battle Hill Primary School recently completed the training and are now equipped with the skills needed to take on the open road. Kevin Hughes, year six teacher and PE coordinator, said: “Bikeability has enabled us to promote cycling to the children that attend our school. It provides them with some basic knowledge of how to check and fix simple issues with their bikes. It also teaches the children how to stay safe in and around the roads when cycling, as well as introducing them to road signs and markings.” North Tyneside Council will be launching its Summer of Cycling campaign in the coming months, aimed at encouraging more people to get into the saddle. The initiative will feature various free fun, family-friendly, cycling activities at community venues throughout the borough and Bikeability will be available to young people during the school summer holidays. Look out for #SummerOfCyclingNT on Twitter for more information and regular updates on how you can get involved. For more information about Bikeability call (0191) 643 7446, email tracey.stonehouse@northtyneside.gov.uk or visit Active North Tyneside. North Tyneside Council also runs the GoSmarter scheme which is aimed at encouraging people of all ages to leave their cars at home and try cycling, walking, scooting or use public transport instead. It also involves making physical changes to streets near schools and pupils can help design local cycling and walking improvements. For further details call (0191) 643 6125.
