Impact a life this Christmas Sofia* visited New Life Pregnancy Center (NLPC), a ministry of Arizona Baptist Children’s Services & Family Ministries, for a free pregnancy test. She shared her story with the center director. A year and a half before, she had left an abusive relationship with her husband. She took her four children with her, ranging in age from 12 years old to two and a half. It had not been an easy transition for any of them, especially for Sofia, trying to manage her life and care for her kids on her own.

“I don’t know what I will do if I m’ pregnant.” In the last year, Sofia had managed to find a job. It was there she met and began dating a younger coworker. After dating for several months Sofia met his family, who were vocal about their disapproval of the relationship. They were uncomfortable with the age difference and were worried about the responsibility of taking on her four children. Due to the family’s concerns, the two decided to end their relationship. A couple weeks after breaking up, Sofia started to think she might be pregnant. She contacted her ex-boyfriend who immediately expressed that he did not want to be involved in any way with her or the baby. He suggested that terminating the pregnancy would be best for both of them. With tears in her eyes Sofia told the center director, “I don’t know what I will do if I'm pregnant.” Sofia’s pregnancy test was positive. She was seven weeks into her pregnancy. The director showed her a model of a fetus at seven weeks, and the two talked about the decision she was now facing. “I know having an abortion is wrong,” she said, but she couldn’t fathom having another child given her current circumstances. She told the director she was unsure about carrying the baby to full-term and that she needed time to process things. Before leaving, the director prayed over Sofia, her unborn child and her other children. She prayed God would give Sofia strength and peace. Sofia was also given referrals to local agencies and resources, including information for a prolife OBGYN in the area, Dr. Shah, who has long partnered with New Life Pregnancy Center. She received instructions on applying for WIC (state help for women, infants and children) and affordable counseling through New Life Counseling, another one of the seven Christ-centered ministries of Arizona Baptist Children’s Services & Family Ministries. The center director added Sofia and her two-yearold to the center’s material assistance program and gave her diapers and clothing. Sofia was encouraged to return at any time for support and prayer.
Months later Sofia returned to the center, now with a beautiful round belly in the third trimester of her pregnancy. She updated the director on her situation and told her that although the father remained insistent that she have an abortion, she stood firm in her decision to keep the baby. She shared how difficult the past few months have been. Her pregnancy was determined high-risk, which led to her losing her job, and she has received no support from the baby’s father. But she also talked about how, in one way or another, the basic needs of her family continue to be met. “I know God is caring for me and my kids.” The center director sensed an opportunity to share the Gospel. Sofia listened intently and decided to accept Jesus as her Savior and Lord! The two prayed together and then celebrated her decision. “Welcome to your new faith family,” the director told her, and then provided her with the days and times of worship services and Bible studies at the church that shares their campus with the pregnancy center.
