Project Brief We make our own architectural position before visiting the site. This is to question the fundamentals of time space as well as to design architecture. The first task is to take a photo of self portrait

condition will be synthesized into a diagram which has generative potentials into an architecture. "The room is the beginning of architecture. It is the place of the mind. You in the room with its dimensions, its structure, its light respond to its character, its spritural aura, recognizing that whatever the human proposes and makes beomes a life. The structure of the room must be evident in the room itself, Structure, I believe, is the giver of light." - Louis Kahn

A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object, all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it. A shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette, or reverse projection of the object blocking the light. There are three distinct parts of a shadow created by any non-point light source after impinging on an opaque object called the umbra, penumbra and antumbra.

Shdow Bilister Effect For a non-point source of light, the shadow is divided into the umbra and penumbra. The wider the light source, the more blurred the shadow. If two penumbras overlap, the shadows appear to attract and merge.

The Room I made a room using pre-tensioned structure. It is a room of shades. Through the ribs, the light comes in, and when the light moves, the shadows overlap and merge each other.

Understanding Observation

wood and the other is arcrylic. It has various results of light experiment.

DayLight Observation I observe the daylight at different times at 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00. The angle of the daylight varies.

Site Analysis History

At 1395, Taejo, the king of Josun Dinasty, started to survey Hanyang's old castle to build new castle. With 197,400 people participationg, the construction started at january, 1395. There were 4 major gates and 4 minor gates. 4 major gates are Heunginjimun at east, Doneumun at west, Sungryemun at south and Sukjeongmun at north and 4 minor gates are Honghwamun at northeast, Gwanghwamun at southeast, Changeumun at northwest and Sodukmun at southwest. Other 3 major gate were located in high and steep mountain, but Dondaemun, which is Heunginjimun, is in low area so Dondaemun has special fortress wall to protect from enemies. At 1422, King Sejong made up the castle wall higher and enhanced attacking and protecting. The method of construction between 2 period is different, so the castle can be described by the shape and stacking pattern of stones. During Japanase colonial era, they destroyed the fortresses by the reason of urban planning. Therefore, nowadays, the part of wall in Samcheong-dong and Janchung-dong are remained and only 2 major gates, Namdaemun and Dondaemun, and 2 minor gates, Northeastmun and Hongyemun are preserved.

Site Installation I divided the walls by the construction period, and draw perpendicular line by the walls. The between parts of the walls are the traces of time crush where penumbras meet.

The Disappeared City

We can see tree shadows in the forest. Shadow has two parts; umbra, the center, and penumbra, the edge. Shadow changes with the distance between a light and an object. When a light and an object get closer, density increases, if get further, the opposite. When I walk through the tree tunnels, my shadow moves and overlaps tree shadows. Shadow in the forest has functioned as a shade. Shadow is the opposite of light; however, shade is an independent object itself. Imagine about the dim weather that doesn't create any shadows. We cannot perceive an object's pure volume. The world is full of silence, aurally and visually. When light comes out, the light makes a shade, and the shade embraces the space. Shade is gradience. There is something essential inside, but now we only see the wall of the city.

I believe there is a raw umbra in the shade, but sometimes it is buried in penumbra. Once the border of the city, it spread and covered the city. The city disappeared. The city appears with the cloud, so the witness's stories were all different. The space where penumbras meet, there is the city.
