GIFTS THAT BRING THE WORLD TOGETHER
速
Together we can give so much more. This past year has been a remarkable one at TOMS. We hit a major milestone, giving our 10 millionth pair of shoes to a child. We began creating jobs in Haiti. We opened our flagship store. But as meaningful as all of this is, nothing excites us more than what’s next. The next pair of shoes we can give. The next cataract surgery we can fund. The next big idea that can improve a life – even if that idea doesn’t come from us. And that’s why we’re introducing Marketplace, a showcase for other social entrepreneurs who are using business to help improve people’s lives. Their products are providing scholarships, creating jobs, funding meals and more. There have never been so many ways to give, give back and change the world together. We hope you’ll join us this season. Warmest wishes for the holidays, Your TOMS family

We’re in business to help change lives. When TOMS Founder Blake Mycoskie started a company that gave a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased, some people called the idea crazy. “That’ll never work.” they said, “How will they stay in business?” But others were inspired. From all over the world, citizens showed that if they could give back with a simple choice, they would. And as more people believed this new way of doing business, we were able to expand what we give and evolve how we do it: We started helping to restore sight with the launch of TOMS Eyewear. We began producing and giving shoes specific to terrain and climate. Then we started exploring how giving shoes could create sustainable jobs in regions that needed them most – all part of a never-ending quest to serve others. Thanks to people like you, our upstart company has become a global movement that helps you give back in over 60 countries. And together, we can continue to change the world.

Happy holidays from Haiti There’s more to this popular collection than style: each pair is individually hand-painted by one of our 30+ commissioned local artists in Haiti – creating and sustaining jobs in a country with the highest unemployment rate in the western hemisphere*. In addition to giving each artist a canvas for cultural expression, you’re personally supporting the dreams and hopes of an extremely promising group of people. “With TOMS, I paint with hope. I paint the way I want my country to be.” – Erickson Hyppolite, Collective Artist

Up close and personal on a TOMS Giving Trip
“Every TOMS employee is sent on a Giving Trip with our Partners in the field. It gives everyone who works at TOMS the chance to see the impact of their work firsthand. More importantly, it puts our Giving Partners and their amazing stories in the spotlight.”
GIVING iN GUATEMALA
the gift of equality
—Blake Mycoskie, TOMS founder and Chief Shoe Giver
SARAH GIVING IN NICARAGUA
the gift of self-sufficiency MATT
One of the big lessons I took with me from World Vision was the importance of investing in the communities. It was exciting to know that TOMS can help support this kind of community development. A new pair of shoes cannot only make a child feel valued, but with our Giving Partners’ support, that child can grow up in a community that can provide greater opportunities. Matt P., Community Outreach giving trip with: world vision, nicaragua

TOM S.com/stories | 800 975 8667
Q: What inspired you most about World Vision? How they help people help themselves. We met a farmer named Wilson who had signed up with World Vision’s program in 2008. He had a plot of land, but was never able to cultivate it properly. They gave him three chickens and a rooster, taught him about proper farming techniques, helped him tap into a well and more – simple things that could really impact his family and community. Today, Wilson has about 70 chickens and 13 roosters, and is making a good living. Now he’s teaching other farmers
in the community everything he’s learned. World Vision explained that they 15-year programs for communities to become self-sufficient. One of the communities we visited was 14 years into the program, and they had come so far that there wasn't a need for new TOMS anymore. That was truly inspiring. Q: What was the best part of your trip? The TOMS story came full circle for me. It’s part of my job to tell our story to our communities, and now I can tell it with firsthand experience.
In Giving Communications, we strive to educate our community about TOMS Giving. I do a lot of research and storytelling on our Giving Partners, so I knew that in developing countries like Guatemala, women and girls often lack the same opportunities as their male counterparts. But while on my Giving Trip visiting Talita Kumi, I was moved seeing how they are changing viewpoints, and as a result, futures. Sarah L., Giving Communications giving trip with: saleisian missions - talita kumi, guatemala
More photos from Sarah's trip at TOMS.com/blog
I’ve always been passionate about women and girls’ empowerment, and I was lucky enough to visit with an organization that works specifically toward supporting them. Guatemala is a very patriarchal society – in many of the communities we visited, young girls and women were not afforded the same chances to attend school or receive healthcare and job training. Oftentimes, the boys of the family would be the ones to receive better opportunities, while the girls would stay at home helping with childcare and other chores. On our trip, Talita Kumi took the group to really remote communities, driving on unpaved roads and hiking upwards of an hour just to reach villages so isolated that they didn’t even speak Spanish. We learned they spoke local indigenous language called Q’echi.
The kids in these communities received TOMS Shoes as part of programs that taught their mothers entrepreneurial skills and provided maternal health care. It was exciting to see our partner giving TOMS to the children whose mothers participated in these programs dedicated to helping their families. Armando, Talita Kumi’s executive director told us that since TOMS have been integrated into their young mother program, participation has risen by 42%! It was amazing to learn that our shoes not only reach children, but are also used for a greater purpose like getting mothers to participate in such vital services. When I came home, I was so inspired I began volunteering as a mentor for high school girls in underprivileged communities in Los Angeles.

We at TOMS believe that business can be used to improve people’s lives. But it takes more than belief to make this a reality. So we’ve given up some of our real estate, here andvonline, to promote the work of other social entrepreneurs. It may seem unorthodox to feature companies that technically could be considered our competition. But for us, when it comes to changing the nature of business, we’re all in this together. On these pages, we’re introducing a few of these individuals and their ideas, and you can see the whole collection – over 200 items from more than 30 innovators – at TOMS.com/marketplace.

To kick off our first-ever TOMS+ collaboration and TOMS+ kids styles, we thought it’d be proper that Tabitha herself experience the impact that this collection can make on the ground. So we invited her on a Giving Trip to Honduras with Giving Partner, Hogar de Niños.
Meet Tabitha Simmons CFDA Swarovski Award for Accessory Design CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award nominee Born: United Kingdom Currently roles: Shoe designer, stylist, fashion writer, mother
For one week, Tabitha and a group of TOMS Employees worked alongside Hogar de Niños, an organization that operates an orphanage and programs for schools in underserved rural and urban regions. From hand-fitting entire schools with new shoes to helping out at the orphanage, Tabitha and crew rolled up their sleeves and went to work.

so we rode up with help of a tractor. The journey up the mountain enabled me to take in the breathtaking landscape of Honduras. This was a very special school for me because it was the first school we gave shoes to on our trip. We were in a very rural area, and many parents of the children came a long way to help greet us with home-cooked Honduran dishes. I learned that compassion, kindness and generosity – no matter how small of an act it is – will, without a doubt, positively affect the recipient, which was an incredible experience to be a part of. These memories will remain in my mind, as well as my heart, forever.

GIVING IN PARAGUAY
the gift of perspective JEFF
It’s amazing what you can do to help thousands and thousands of people that we will never know or see. But the fact that we’re doing it brings my team enormous satisfaction, knowing that the hard work they put into this eyewear pays off in very big ways. Jeff G., VP/GM Eyewear giving trip with: Fundación Visión, paraguay
Read more about our sight giving at TOMS.com/blog
Since 2011, TOMS Eyewear has carried on a mission to restore sight to people in need around the world. And in August 2013, we were able to launch our first employee Giving Trip to observe one of our Sight Giving Partners in the field. So it’s particularly fitting that our V.P. and G.M. of TOMS Eyewear would be on this trip and see his team’s work in action. What were your expectations going into your Giving Trip? You see videos of our Sight Giving. You hear about how we help with outreach to identify those who have needs. But until you actually see it, I don’t think you can understand the impact of it. It allowed me to put everything I’ve seen and heard in perspective. What was something that was completely unexpected? The lengths that Fundación Visión
36
TOM S.com/stories | 800 975 8667
went through to simply get people into screenings. They go as far as 3-4 hours outside the city to screen remote, impoverished communities, and the outreach takes weeks. In one neighborhood of indigenous Paraguayans, they’d get the word out through the community church. As people were leaving each service, staff members would hand them a flyer announcing a screening date, that it’s free to them and how it would address various visual problems and needs in that community. They’d give extra flyers to them to give to their neighbors and friends so the reach is as broad as possible. The main purpose of our screenings was to identify people with cataract. Fundación Visión operates extensively to treat this issue, starting with identifying those afflicted, then providing them with the information required to have a brief surgery that could help them overcome their blindness.
The biggest cause of avoidable global blindness is cataract, which accounts for 51% of world blindness; all it takes a simple, 15-minute surgery to remove a cataract and change a life. TOMS Eyewear purchases subsidize the cost of these surgeries, fully covering the costs for people in need.
You were able to observe a cataract surgery? We were! There were about 6 of us who got to scrub in and watch a surgery. We saw a 78-year old woman who had extremely limited sight for 15 years, being completely blind for the last 2 years. We observed her from getting prepped, to pre-op, to actually having a cataract removed from one eye. We were fortunate enough to have the doctor that runs the organization walk us through every step of the way. While we were behind a window about 8 feet from where he was operating, there
was a flat-screen in the room showing the intricacies of the procedure – it was fascinating. We watched the incision being made, the instrument going into the eye, and this tool pull the cataract right out of the eye. Including cleaning of the eye and sowing up the incision, it only took about 20 minutes. We just stood there shaking our heads, amazed. Did you meet anyone else who received surgery through TOMS Eyewear? There was a mother of two young kids at the clinic who had her cataract removed a couple weeks prior. She was explaining to us what she could see that day versus what she could see back then – there wasn’t even a comparison. She was in tears as she talked to us, thanking us as TOMS employees for what we do, because she would never have gotten that opportunity otherwise. Her sight had gotten so bad that she was afraid to even cross the street with her children. The procedure changed her, and her children’s, lives.

Up close and personal on a TOMS Giving Trip
Members of our Giving Team often pay visits to our Giving Partners around the world to ensure that our giving is impactful and sustainable. And while our Giving Team might know everything there is to know about how we give, their Giving Trips are a reminder that there’s still so much to learn.
GIVING IN HONDURAS
the gift of determination AMAR
GIVING IN EL SALVADOR
the gift of community
Ashley C. & Tracy M, Giving Team giving trip with: Save the children, el salvador
ASHLEY
TRACY
What was one thing you learned on your Giving Trip? Ashley: I learned that a huge problem in El Salvador is soil-transmitted infections because of the heavy rain season. A lot of the time, shoes can help prevent that. For school distributions, volunteers would teach each child receiving TOMS the importance of good hygiene, like wearing shoes and washing your hands. They’d even give them coloring pages with pictures of shoes that would further educate them – it was a fun experience for the kids. It was also cool to see Save the Children use shoes as an incentive to encourage moms to seek preventative care – most of them just went when they were sick. Now these women were receiving treatments for blood pressure, hypertension and other issues common in El Salvador. Their kids that came along were getting the new shoes. Tracy: It was interesting to see how excited TOMS employees were to learn about our giving, asking questions about development and really stretching their understanding about what acceptable and unacceptable living conditions are. It’s a journey I’ve been on many times, so seeing them experience life in a developing country for the first time, putting their work – and lives in the U.S. – in perspective was really fulfilling for me. What did you admire most about Save the Children? Ashley: All their programs are run by the community. They’d have children that were

excelling in the classroom demonstrate hand washing to other children. Moms and grandmothers would host reading circles for preschool children. It really showed how their programs took root in a community. Tracy: They had fantastic volunteers – a combination of parents, schoolchildren and locals. Everyone saw the bigger picture: if the children got shoes and stayed in school, they could come back to town, start their own businesses and help the community. Maybe they could build a bigger school, a better clinic – the kids could come back as doctors. You could tell by the way the volunteers spoke that they had big hopes and dreams for their community. We vet all of our Giving Partners very closely before we start working with them, reviewing their programs and seeing how TOMS could support them. I visit our partners in Africa four times a year, but this was my first time in South America. I was extremely impressed at how unified entire communities were, which is something that doesn’t happen as often in Africa.
Parting thoughts? Ashley: One last thing! I really want to thank my mom for letting me visit Africa when I was 16! That was my inspiration for working someplace like TOMS.

One thing I’ve learned about giving: it’s not easy. From the moment you make your purchase to getting new shoes toPartners, a tremendous amount of effort goes into each step. My job at TOMS is to deal with all the obstacles we face, but on my Giving Trip, I personally experienced just how hard our Giving Partners work in getting each shoe to a child. Amar P., Supply Chain giving trip with: Hogar de ninos, honduras
How does your role at TOMS contribute to our giving? As the Giving Supply Chain Manager, my team is responsible for distributing shoes to our Giving Partners across the globe and handling all the challenges along the way. I was excited to see what happens once the shoes get in the hands of our Giving Partners. So what did you learn about how TOMS Shoes are given? So much work goes into getting our shoes to Partners, but now I know how hard it is to get the shoes to the children. One of the distributions Hogar [de Niños] scheduled was at a school in a very rural area, and it was their first-ever visit – so it was a new experience for us, Hogar, and the kids there. It had rained the night before. Since we were on dirt roads, our truck wasn’t able to get to the school. So we improvised:
the staff called all the schools to tell them to meet us at an intersection, which was basically just a meeting of five dirt roads near a grassy area. So that’s where we set up shop. While we’re setting up, we see kids from three different schools coming down to meet us, with their parents trailing behind. I realized how remote our location was – the children and parents weren’t used to visitors, much less brand new gifts. The parents watched us give shoes from a distance, and you could tell they were curious. But as soon as we started playing with the kids, I think they knew we were genuine. It takes so many people coming together to make this all work. My Giving Trip made me appreciate everyone involved that much more.
