From Failure Comes Success
To accept the failure of sin as a way of life is to truly forfeit life.
THE REVEREND PETER DELVIZIS
T
hink of the opportunities laid out before us. As we have successfully navigated through the course of Great Lent and as we prepare to enter the days of Holy Week to bear witness to the Passion of Christ, the frailty of the self has been realized in order to display the awesome magnitude of Jesus’ power. Through prayerful contemplation, through the assistance of the Fast, through almsgiving, we witness how great the fall from God’s glory is. He however, in His mercy and loving kindness, extends His hand to raise us up to greater and more glorious things. Through struggle and by recognizing and confessing the sin within, we have
emerged from a dark cave cheerfully willing to receive the Light of Christ on the holy day of Pascha. Sin, my brothers and sisters, is the greatest catastrophe of life. Sin is the failure to live up to the high calling of being children of the Most High. Like Adam and Eve, we have failed to keep the divine commandments of God. For this reason, we cannot avail ourselves to the Kingdom of God. But being creatures made in the image and likeness of God, we are given the ability to learn from our failures. With the help of the Church, we can identify the mistakes made in our lives and seek ways to correct them. True failure in the spiritual life is to remain un-
affected, un-changed, un-repenting, un-committed to Christ’s offer of New Life. In other words, to accept the failure of sin as a way of life is to truly forfeit life. Holy Week is yet another opportunity offered by the Church for us to achieve success (to meet Christ) from failure (life of sin.) Christ, has not only provided an avenue for our success, He has in fact ensured our success through confession and faith in Him. Success in achieving true life, eternal life, is found in His precious Cross, for “the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Cor. 1:18. The Divine Liturgy is called the Eucharist, because it provides us with an opportunity to thank God weekly for the many gifts he bestows on us.
At the Great Entrance, we offer bread and wine to the Lord which is changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. At this time, we also offer ourselves to God with the hope that we will become transformed into the Body of Christ by our
The priest offers the gifts to the God the Father with the words; Your own gifts we offer to you, with all our being and for all our blessings. This means, Lord, that which you give to us, we return and offer back to you, with our whole heart and entire being and for all the blessings and gifts you give to us. We take part of the possessions that God has given us and return them to Him. We also take our life and Pag. 3

The Power of the Resurrection
THE REV. ALEXANDER G. LEONDIS
T
he beauty of the Holy Week and Easter services can hardly be described in words. Words pale before a mystical and the spiritual encounter. When we experience the Kingdom, words fail us, for only the heart can absorb and perceive its magnificence. The Holy Week hymns and scriptural lessons lead us to the personal awareness of sin, as we behold God being humiliated for our sake. When we taste the magnitude of God’s love and our lowliness, we are touched and we desire to adjust, to change, to conform, to improve - this is repentance. We surrender our ego to the supremacy of the Kingdom of God. God’s Kingdom becomes present at the very center of our life. We become regenerated, rejuvenated, born anew in God’s love. With each annual Holy Week and Easter observance, the Kingdom becomes increasingly the focal point of our life. We feel unworthy of His love, because we are sinners. How can Christ love me when I renounce Him so often? Fear keeps us at a distance. Faith, however, gives us boldness to approach. We feel unworthy and yet pag.1
greatly loved at the same time. Christ gives so much, and asks for so little. We have not drunk the chalice of our Lord’s passion. We have not helped Him carry His cross. We have not died with Him. Like His disciples, we have slept during His agony, abandoned Him and denied Him many times by our sins. In spite of our soiled souls and hearts, due to the stench of our sins, Christ invites us to enter into the paschal joy. If we open our heart to the forgiveness that flows from the empty tomb, if we allow ourselves to be penetrated by the light of Easter, if we adore the presence of the risen Lord, we too, will receive the power of His resurrection and new life. First, however, we must enter the Bridal Chamber, the mystical union with Christ. We are reminded of Jesus’ appearance to His disciples when He entered the room although the doors were locked. The risen Jesus can overcome all obstacles. He can even enter into souls that, hitherto, have remained closed and locked to Him. Let this be our prayer this Easter that Jesus will enter where our doors have been previously shut. My brothers
and sister in Christ, the power of the Resurrection is ours for the asking. Easter reminds us each year that Christ is victorious and in Him we have life. Christ is risen from the dead, by death, trampling on death, and to those in the tombs he granted life. Christ is risen! Receive life! ^
- Stewardship - Your Own Gifts We Offer To You offer it to Him. On the “Prosforon,” the bread that is offered that becomes the Body of Christ, is found the inscription “IC XC - Nika,” or Jesus Christ conquers. We have chosen to use the sign of the “Prosforon” as the logo of our Christian Stewardship Program, because we believe that as the wine and bread become the Body and Blood of Christ, that our Stewardship offering is transformed into ministry for the glory of God at Holy Trinity and for the perpetuation of our Orthodox Church. Your Stewardship offering is a very serious matter to God. It tells God what place He holds on the priorities list of your life. As God has been generous to you, He expects us to be generous to Him and His Church. Your Stewardship offering becomes the tool of ministry, salvation and healing. If you have not as yet submitted your Christian Stewardship Card for 2011, please do so today. As you prayerfully decide what to give, ponder upon the words: “Your own gifts we offer to you, with all our being and for all our blessings.” ^ The Promise ^ April 2011 ^ Volume 35, Issue 3

- From Failure Comes Success
the failure of sin to His Cross, we are granted success by gaining eternal life.
Without Christ, life is a failure; with Christ, it becomes uniquely and triumphantly successful.
Which of the two criminals crucified with Christ achieved success? The one who rebuked Christ or the one who confessed Him? The life of the thief who confessed the Lord was renewed by Christ.
May this Holy Week be a time of successfully encountering Christ. Let us hold fast to what we have been given in Christ through faith so that no one may take away the crown of victory. By overcoming and being successful in prayer and faith, the Lord will establish you as a great pillar in the temple of God. The Lord will write the name of God upon your soul and establish you in the New Jerusalem the Kingdom of God. [Rev. 3:12]
So too we can achieve success and enter into the heavenly Kingdom, as did the repentant thief, by crucifying our sinful flesh with Him so that the body of sin might be done away with. In this, we shall no longer be slaves of sin. By reckoning ourselves to be dead to sin we become alive in God through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Parish News & Updates PARISHIONER AUTHORS BOOK
R
arely does a book, in any genre, deliver a read that is as breathtaking in its depth as it is in its scope. This is an even great challenge for Christian theology tomes. Encapsulating thousands of years of history, while addressing contemporary concerns, is certainly a tall order. Andrew S. Bogeatzes attempts to fulfill that order with his expansive new book, Knowing and Living Your Orthodox Christian Faith: A Guide to Faith and Worship (published by WestBow Press). Andy wrote Knowing and Living Your Orthodox Christian Faith to help Christians to better understand the doctrines, beliefs, Holy traditions, faith, sacraments, and worship of the Christian church. The book details the origins of the Christian religion and the connection of the Orthodox Christian Church to Jesus Christ, His apostles, the early church fathers and the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The book also details the Divine Liturgy, the effects of reading the Holy Bible, the fruit of prayer , and the interconnectedness of all. “If we still have doubts in our minds about the existence of a mighty power, our God,” Andy writes, “then all we have to do is to look all around us. Everything is arranged in an orderly manner, and there is a grand purpose in every aspect of the human, animal, and plant kingdoms – and the planet
earth with an infinite universe. The evidence that is presented in this book truly confirms that God is with us and all around us.” Andy was born of parents who emigrated from Greece to Western Pennsylvania, where he and his three sisters were born and raised. His parents were strong Orthodox Christians and encouraged him to be the same. He earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering and was the Sunday School director of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for more than 20 years. Now retired, Andy has compiled his life mission in Knowing and Living Your Orthodox Christian Faith which he dedicates to the memory of his beloved wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Bogeatzes. The book is available at the Holy Trinity Book Store. ^
