CONTRI BUTORS

Amanda Woods

Kate Armstrong

Page 24

Award-winning travel writer Kate Armstrong is obsessed with all things Africa. After a two-year working stint in Mozambique, she explored South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini several times for Lonely Planet Publications. She continues to travel regularly abroad to such farflung places as Alaska, Mexico and Namibia. Her articles appear regularly in Australian national broadsheets and she’s been published in the UK’s Daily Telegraph and National Geographic magazine. She’s as happy writing about fluffy pillows as hard-core hiking, and is curious about everything, from cuisine to local characters; in her words, ‘the quirkier, the better’.

Page 32

Amanda Woods started her career as broadcast journalist and has worked for the BBC, ABC, SBS and more. After switching gears to travel writing she has been published in Escape, MiNDFOOD, Vacations & Travel, The Telegraph (UK) and more. To say she’s fallen in love with India is an understatement. ‘India was the first place since Antarctica that was straight back to number one on my wish list before I’d even made it home’. Amanda is also a copywriter and the author of the Rock Pools of Sydney and One Hundred Beaches Sydney books with photographer Vincent Rommelaere.

Craig Tansley

Page 40

Craig Tansley is one of Australia’s most travelled travel writers – which means he spends a lot of time on planes, and horribly jetlagged. He’s written for everyone from the Sydney Morning Herald to the Sunday Times in London to Pleasure in Germany. He’s been to over 60 countries, but hopes to get to 194, or is it 195?

A&K PHILANTHROPY

SHARING THE GIFT OF HEARING IN KENYA

In Kenya, 14 in every 1,000 children have moderate or severe hearing loss — about 13 times higher than in Australasia. It is often not detected though because just 0-1% of newborns have their hearing screened.

February marked the launch of the ‘Hear Kenya!’ program — the largest collaborative initiative AKP has ever been a part of. ‘Hear Kenya!’ 2024 aims to fund cochlear implants

for 10 children in rural Kenya with profound hearing loss.

Unlike a hearing aid, a cochlear implant does not make sounds louder; rather, it sends sound signals through electrodes. Sounds are converted into electrical impulses, which are interpreted by the brain.

The first child in line for the implant surgery, pictured above, underwent her operation on the 16th of

February, and for the first time, she can now hear sound … including her parents’ voices!

The program also aims to ship 15 containers of hearing medical equipment to Kenya at a value of over US $6 million; as well as host the Listen to Me! Conference, aimed

at helping Kenyan families and professionals teach children how to listen and speak using implants. As their largest initiative to date, AKP are honoured to support the children of Kenya, to share the gift of hearing and make a lasting impact on the lives of thousands.

YEAR OF BUILDING

One of the largest ways AKP enable children and young adults to fulfill their potential is by facilitating infrastructure projects at partner schools around the globe.

This year, AKP are looking forward to facilitating the following projects:

• New campus at Kok Chan Primary School in Siem Reap, Cambodia

• New campus block at Tapang Primary School in Siem Reap, Cambodia

• Six-classroom addition at Ilboru School for Children with Special Needs in Tanzania

• Computer/learning centre at Sanuriro Primary School in Uganda

• Science lab at Nakatindi Primary School in Zambia.

ANGKOR THOM

Venture into the ruins of ‘The Great City’ of Angkor Thom — home to the world-famous Buddhist temple, Angkor Wat — and discover one of the most impressive royal cities of the Khmer Empire. Constructed in the late 12th century, and widely considered to be a masterpiece in the art of urban planning, the city covers an area of 10 square kilometres and is protected by eight-metre-high walls and an encircling moat — intended to symbolise the continents and oceans in a mandala. Research suggests that the city was home to between 700,000 and 900,000 people at its height in the 13th century. Angkor Wat is just one of many temples inside Angkor Thom city, including Bayon, Baphuon and Phimeanakas.

Recent Travels Greece

Sundowner www.abercrombiekent.com.au 14
Volcanic wines, four-wheel driving and private catamarans, A&K’s Pauline Stavrakis reflects on her recent journey to Greece.

It’s hard to believe that a decade ago, Greece was suffering through one of the harshest economic recessions in history. Today, the Mediterranean stunner is one of Europe’s fastest growing economies, and savvy tourists are returning, keen to take part in the country’s renaissance.

On my recent journey back to Greece, despite having been many times, I found that it still manages to stoke my wanderlust. In Athens, I’m still amazed when I climb up to the highest hill and look out over 3,000 years of history. In Crete, I’ve discovered that four-wheel driving in the centre of the island delivers a whole new take on paradise. While in Santorini, the volcanic wine industry

continues to make strides, one drop at a time.

ATHENS

Athens is Europe’s oldest city, a rollcall of ancient marvels. You’ve heard of the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, and the Parthenon, but beyond Athens’s undeniable historical value, visitors will find a youthful energy has begun to dot the city. Hip cafes and bespoke shops vie with broken pavements and abandoned buildings, and some say Athens is set to become the new Berlin.

New Berlin or not, most of Athens still reflects the complexity of its past. But its everchanging contrasts are everywhere. Beautiful and

broken, urban and ancient, dynamic and decayed. Even the Acropolis changes with the light, its white marble gleaming in the midday sun, honeyed and pink at sunset, and fiercely illuminated above the city at night.

For me, when it comes to Athens it is more about the historic whole, rather than the parts. Head to Lycabettus Hill at sunset and you might see what I mean. From here, you can look out over the whole city all the way to the Aegean. I could bask in this view for hours, marvelling at human history, time, and the birth of western civilisation.

I stayed at the 150-year-old Hotel Grande Bretagne, a much-loved

historical Athenian landmark. With an ambiance of old-world elegance and luxury, mixed with dazzling haute aesthetics, this hotel is truly iconic. The views from the Rooftop Terrace were spectacular. I could see the entire city and the Acropolis as I savoured saganaki and grilled octopus from the rooftop Garden Restaurant.

SANTORINI

Santorini has always been the jewel in Greece’s crown. A volcanic eruption over 3,000 years ago left a caldera sunk in the ocean, changing a round island into a half-moon cluster of sheer cliffs. Limewashed edifices, blue domes and candy-coloured homes cling to the cliffs creating jaw-dropping visuals, straight out of a postcard.

I cruised into Santorini’s volcanic caldera and dropped my bags at the

gorgeous Mystique Hotel, perched on the cliffs of Oia. Its Cycladic cave rooms, were a wondrous exploration of driftwood, spontaneity and untamed material that harnessed the spirit of simplicity. Mine came with its own private pool and stunning views across the Aegean and out towards the volcano.

There’s more to Santorini than its undeniable beauty. This trip, I wanted to delve deeper into Santorini’s volcanic wine industry. I set out to explore under the guidance of an expert, private sommelier. We visited three familyrun estates, had multiple tastings paired with cheese and treats, and I discovered how volcanic earth creates unique, minerally wines which have been traded for centuries.

Then it was time to experience life on the water. We cruised around the crescent island on a private catamaran, gliding past the famous red beach and into the crater, with its sulphuric waters and hot springs. That evening, I dined by candlelight inside the 400-year-old winery cave at Alati Restaurant in the Vedema Resort. The sea lobster with tomato, fresh herbs and pine nuts was exquisite.

CRETE

The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is an underrated gem, a diverse island that enchants all who visit. Its size means it’s frequently uncrowded, with a huge variety of landscapes and experiences: you’ll find ancient ruins, hikes and canyons, quaint ports, secluded beaches, and thousands of years of unique Cretan culture and cuisine.

Having stayed in Crete a number of times, this trip I was looking for something really special. The search took me to an impossibly beautiful private beach called Vathi on the north-eastern corner of the island. Owned by the Daios Cave Resort, with its private crescent of sand and crystal-clear water, I could have whiled away the days here forever. But there were adventures to be had.

I’m a nature lover, so when my guide suggested a 4WD into the wild interior, I was chuffed. We weaved around dirt tracks, crossed low gushing rivers, traversed emerald forests and hills, and finished with a hike to Kritsa Gorge. Following the riverbed, we clamoured through the canyon until we reached the plateau to impressive views of the island.

But my absolute highlight was my inspiring tour of Crete’s deserted island, Spinalonga — once home to Europe’s last leper colony. Gliding into its eerie port through bright sapphire waters as the Venetian fortress came into view, was magnificent. My guide took me wandering around the crumbling ruins, some with grapevines still flourishing, and the abandoned village, as she told moving stories about the remarkable people who lived there.

There are so many ways to explore this extraordinary country. A&K can show you the eternal highlights, while also taking you off the well-worn path to discover sides of Greece that are just as marvellous.

Otherworldly Encounters

A bespoke journey through Zambia, Botswana and Namibia provides perspectives that extend beyond extraordinary landscapes and animal sightings, as Kate Armstrong discovers.

4: Hippopotamus, Zambezi River, Zambia

5: Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, Botswana

The sun hasn’t yet risen over the banks of the Zambezi River, the beautiful setting of our accommodation, Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma, in Zambia. Yet I stir to an African alarm: grunts and croaks of surrounding creatures. As our group gathers for a dawn wilderness drive, the frisson buzzes more than the insects that skim like tiny ice skaters across the water. We will return later to the deck of the lodge’s main hub to feast on eggs Benedict, while watching weavers build their cocoonlike nests in branches nearby.

The morning drive, our first of many activities, is replicated over my ten-day journey that heads from here to Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, Botswana, and Sanctuary Elephant Lodge Okahirongo, Namibia. At each place A&K provides a wellpaced program of wilderness drives, sunset cruises, spa treatments and

swims. Let’s not forget the evertantalising ‘surprise’ sundowners.

But the duplication ends with the activity names; these astonishing locations are as varied as a zebra’s stripes (unique to each). One day, I’m walking along the raised boardwalk that connects Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma’s individual tree houses.

Two days later, I’m sitting under the shade of a Zambezi teak tree on the spongy green lawn of Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero (Botswana). And at my final stop, I’m staring out at infinite red and rocky landscape from my futuristic-style suite at Sanctuary Okahirongo Elephant Lodge (Namibia). And each place shines with stellar moments.

A ‘star’ of Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma is Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. Zambia’s smallest public park doesn’t have big cats, but it protects instead

another special animal – southern white rhino.

From our elevated vehicle seats, we can see the park’s ten rhinos, part of their successful rehabilitation program, browsing in the distance. We alight, one of the rare times this is permitted here. A park guard, Kapoko, leads us in single file and, when sensing our slight trepidation, he points to his rifle: ‘This is my second wife’. (It’s to ward off potential poachers). From a safe distance, we pause to observe these pre-historic creatures as they graze. It’s a remarkable moment.

That afternoon (after a massage in the lodge spa), we head off in a motor boat on the Zambezi River. On boarding, Shadrek warns us: ‘No dangling hands in water. Hippos are territorial. Plus there are whirlpools’. Before we zoom over

eddies, Shadrek requests our ‘special interests’. ‘Hippos!’, cries one. ‘G&Ts!’, jokes another. He delivers.

Minutes later, we’re sipping on cocktails (the glasses reflect pink sunset hues) and viewing hippos with their babies as they bob the depths. Egyptian geese fly overhead and a massive crocodile lies motionless on a rock. It’s a far cry from how Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone experienced the river and the nearby Victoria Falls from his dug-out canoe in 1855.

If it’s one thing to immerse yourselves ‘in’ the Falls (Mosi-Oa-Tunya) which we do the next day, by meandering along the mist-filled gorge path, it’s another to soar above the torrents in a helicopter. Promoted as ‘The Flight of Angels’ – after Livingstone’s descriptions where ‘scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels

in their flight’ – the experience is a lofty one indeed. We fly across the switchback of gorges before whipping, James Bond style, through a narrow pass. There are more thrills to come.

The next morning sees an easy onehour transfer to A&K’s handsome Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero in Botswana. Here, a large expanse of lawn spreads to the boundary and silver cluster leaf trees spread out like giant bonsai. The main building is an aesthete’s delight with massive open fire places, polished concrete floors trimmed with mosaic tiles, and cream and grey décor. Much of the lodge-based relaxation takes place on the terrace where the restaurant-bar overlooks a boma (outdoor enclosure with fire pit). A series of individual suites are spaced along paths that extend on each side.

That afternoon, we climb aboard the 4x4 for a wilderness drive in Chobe National Park, an 11,000-square kilometre park that was formed in 1968. Bobby is on a mission – this is lion country and he wants to find one. He homes in: a female lion, sated from an earlier kill of kudu (hidden in a nearby bush), lies on the ground licking her jowls. On departing, Bobby accelerates the vehicle. A few metres later, we screech to a halt. He’s spotted something: a kudu is crossing the path of a giraffe.

‘That’s a good photo!’ he instructs. ‘Double bonus!’ He has an eye for an angle.

But what captures my attention is the boat trip on Lake Chobe. Far from the Zambezi’s fast-moving torrent, the water is mirror-slick. We move slowly, soaking up the warm breeze and the sight of shorebirds and water life, easy to spy from the top deck of the double-layered cruiser.

Bobby is delighted to witness my newfound knowledge: the flash of purple and aqua indicates the Lilac breasted roller; the distinct jagged wings equal African hawk; and a 1.2-metre wing span distinguishes the Marabou stork from other stork species. It’s our final experience together; it’s time to move on.

Our arrival the following day in Namibia, comes as a shock. We emerge from our light plane on the desert airstrip of Purros Conservancy, Kunene, a region in the country’s remote northwest. I feel like I’ve been transported to Mars. A vast sandscape stretches to the horizon, interrupted only by red rocks, carved by the wind, and a silhouette of hills. It’s a surreal, but stunning sight. We continue driving in this unworldly landscape until we reach a ridge, where Sanctuary Okahirongo Elephant Lodge – a series of cuboids and trapezoids – spreads out along a ridge that overlooks the arid

7 8 6 Sundowner www.abercrombiekent.com.au 28

Hoarusib River. Fanning out from its core (an egg-shaped dome, the shape of a traditional Himba hut) are several communal areas, plus an infinity pool, all connected by boardwalks. The décor of driftwood, local stone, and muted fabrics reflect the natural surrounds.

Our guide, Karitjangua, a local Himba, is patient and gentle and, thanks to his beautiful turns of phrase, is as philosophical as Plato. On searching for the region’s solo bull elephant on one of our drives, he says thoughtfully, ‘we will see whether he is available or not’. His poetic phrasing reminds us that we

are privileged to be in the animals’ territory, not the other way around, especially given the drought-ravaged conditions. Nevertheless, over three days of our activities (including guided walks), animals emerge like mirages: oryx, springbok, zebra and ostrich. (And, thanks to Karitjangua’s incredible spotting skills, the bull elephant eventually graced us with his presence). And the sensations continue.

At the Elephant Coast, a remarkable series of dunes (a two-hour drive from the lodge), we peer out at the never-ending chain of sandy undulations, and catch the scent of

wild tamarisk and wild tobacco trees that remarkably eke out survival from the parched earth.

For our final dusk experience, we’re driven to the summit of a basalt tabletop mountain, carved over thousands of years by the wind. Planet Venus glitters above the moon (star-gazing is brilliant here). In the distance, a lone giraffe stands motionless, like a leggy model posing in a sand-themed set. The silence is thicker than an insulated recording studio. The horizon beams a warm orange. This superb final viewpoint is the perfect place to reflect on my ten-day, three-country, threelodge journey, and the challenge of providing an impression on such a diverse and stimulating adventure.

I recall my final morning in Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero in Botswana, where I ask Guide Bobby (he of the good photo angle) what he enjoys about his role. He responds that ‘each and every day is different’. But he’s not referring to experiences;

14

rather, he loves meeting ‘different types of people’.

‘It’s not only about me giving guests information. We also learn from each other,’ says Bobby.

Of all the perspectives of this incredible African journey, this one –intangible and subtle – may be its most defining.

For years it had been building. India was calling and I was finally ready to answer. But as much as I’m a confident solo traveller I know this is one place where I don’t want to go it alone. Instead I decide to hand all of the planning and logistics over to the experts so I can let myself live in the moment and absorb everything India has to share with me. And as soon as I see that A&K sign in Delhi airport arrivals, I know I’ve done the right thing.

I’m dazed and delighted after the long haul flight as our driver joins the dodging and weaving dance I’ll get to know so well on the roads.

‘Traffic lanes are just a suggestion’. Our guide smiles reassuringly. ‘The three things drivers in India need are good horns, good brakes and good luck’.

I feel like my luck is definitely in as we arrive at The Imperial where kings and queens, movie and rock stars, and world leaders have stayed before me. The first hotel in New Delhi when it opened in 1931, The Imperial is a mix of Art Deco, Victorian and colonial styles and has retained its sense of history while enjoying a luxurious freshening up during an extensive refurbishment in 2023. As for the art on the walls, that’s worth more than the hotel

itself with more than 5,000 pieces from the 17th and 18th century.

In the morning after my first delicious dosa, a traditional crepelike breakfast that has me instantly hooked, we meet our A&K guide Suryaveer Singh Shaktawat AKA Sunny. A former professional cricket player for India, Sunny is as warm as his name suggests and has a passion for sharing India’s history, heritage, culture, arts, and spirituality. As we later discover, he also happens to be a direct descendant of the founder of the Mewar Kingdom, allowing us to learn about the world’s oldest-serving dynasty from someone who shares the same blood.

Next we’re introduced to our coach driver, Varender Singh, or as we're invited to call him, Malli and his assistant J.P Singh, who we call Mama. I soon discover that the best seat on the coach is up front where I can watch Malli calmly drive us through the most intense traffic scenes featuring trucks, cars, buses, bikes, tuk tuks, cows, donkeys, dogs, goats, and the occasional camel. Mama brings us cold drinks to keep us cool and hydrated in the Indian heat.

Our first outing takes us from New Delhi into Old Delhi where the wide, tree lined avenues that architect Sir Edwin Lutyens

planned when the capital of British India moved from Calcutta, (now Kolkata), to Delhi in 1911, change to narrow bustling roads and labyrinths of laneways.

After introducing us to the Jama Masjid, Delhi’s impressive 17th century Mughal-style mosque designed by the architect and engineer who created the Taj Majal and Red Fort, Ustad Ahmad Lahori, Sunny leads us to a row of rickshaws. And after taking our seats we’re treated to a sensory overload ride through the crowded, narrow alleyways around Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi’s oldest and busiest market areas.

Lunch is a chance to try the local street food, in a more refined way at the Haveli Dharampura, a 19th century mansion that has received a UNESCO award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Then we travel back into New Delhi to see the first garden-tomb in India, and the inspiration for the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb that was built for the Mughal emperor in the 1560s.

It’s a day full of new sights, smells and tastes, and it’s just the beginning. Our nine-day Splendours of Rajasthan journey will take us around India’s famous Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and then keep on going to Udaipur and Jodhpur.

Along the way we see an array of UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Taj Mahal, where we have the chance to see the light change on the marble dome at sunset and sunrise, the red sandstone Agra Fort, the Amber Fort in Jaipur, the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur and the Ranakpur Jain Temple.

Every site has a thousand stories to tell. At the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur I find myself standing in the 18th century astronomical observation site that includes the world’s largest stone sundial, where astronomy and astrology took great leaps forward. In the City Palace in Udaipur I become fascinated with miniature paintings and their intricate details painted with single hairs from a squirrel’s

tail. And at the Abhaneri village in Rajasthan I’m transfixed by the geometric patterns in the Chand Baori, one of the largest and most beautiful stepwells in the world that was built over a thousand years ago.

Every night we are treated to the next level luxury of some of India’s most magnificent hotels. Upon arrival we’re welcomed with rituals for our health, wellbeing and happiness and showered with rose petals as we take in our spectacular new surroundings. I never want to check out of any of the places we stay, and yet my heart expands once again as I fall in love with our new home.

After The Imperial in Delhi starts our journey in style we move to the

Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra where every room has a view of the Taj Mahal, then to the opulence of the Leela Palace in Jaipur, and onto the magic of the Oberoi Udaivilas’ Mewar and Mughal inspired architecture with views over Lake Pichola. For our final hotel we share a palace with a king.

The Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur is still the home of the Jodhpur royal family who continue to live in a private quarter while guests enjoy the rest as a Taj Hotel. Moments before we see the dome

above what was once the largest private residence in the world, Sunny has a surprise for us. We’ve been invited for drinks with His Highness, Maharaja Gaj Singh II.

Following a quick etiquette lesson in the Heritage Room where portraits of the Maharaja and those who came before him look on, we’re joined by the 38th ruler of the House of Marwar who ascended to the throne when he was just four years old when his father died in a plane crash. In the 1970s Prime Minister Indira Ghandi

stripped royal families of their privy purses leaving Gaj Singh with the maintenance costs of the palace, the Mehrangarh Fort and more.

While many royal properties have since fallen into ruin, the enterprising Maharaja turned to tourism and not only changed his own life, but the Heritage Hotel movement in India and Rajasthan travel too. As the Maharaja smiles as he shares his stories I feel honoured to have the chance to smile back at a man who has done so much for his people.

The next day we get to see local ecotourism in action with a visit to the Bishnoi village and meet members of a community that dates back to the 15th century. Founded by Guru Jambheshwar the Bishnoi people are known for their unconditional love of wildlife and nature, and we watch potters making traditional pottery on a foot-powered treadle wheel before visiting a hut in Salawas for a weaving workshop.

We’re already eating out of Roopraj Prajapati’s hands as he shows us

the dhurry or rug making skills his family has used for more than a hundred years. When he starts covering the ground with colourful rugs I know that just like Richard Gere, who sat in this very spot before me, I’m not leaving without a special souvenir.

And as I say goodbye with my hand woven yoga mat under my arm I’m already grateful for all of the memories of India that it will carry home.

Santiago wasn’t always this cool, surely? I’ve always come through Santiago on my way to a South American adventure far from here in Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. But as I sit now under the rising three-quarter moon on the rooftop of my chic hotel in inner-city Lastarria, with its views right out over the Andes, I’m falling for the swagger of this South American city.

It’s a good omen for the start of a South American adventure – one that will take me to northern Chile and beyond to Bolivia and into Peru. Santiago, I thought, would be a place to grin and bear, but these days Lonely Planet describes Santiago as: ‘Surprising, cosmopolitan, energetic, sophisticated and worldly’. Its city parks – my favourite by far is Cerro San Cristobal, which is so close to

the urban chaos of the city but so far away at the same time – allow for the most stunning views of the Andes, though we’re soon travelling to the coast, 90 minutes west to Valparaiso.

With its drastic-sloping streets facing the Pacific, Valparaiso is one of the most unique cities in South America; and has been one of its best-kept secrets. Valparaiso was once the most important shipping port in the Pacific, attracting settlers from across Europe who brought with them their architectural styles.

It went into decay when the Panama Canal was built, but now it’s World Heritage listed, and stunning. Historic funicular elevators take me up to Valparaiso’s steepest suburbs where coffee drinkers sit at sundrenched cafés in cobbled squares.

Narrow laneways run past murals, buskers play tunes, and houses every colour of the rainbow look across a pretty harbour. How the whole city doesn’t fall down into the sea is a mystery.

Next, we fly to the world’s driest desert, the Atacama, two hours flying time north of Santiago. Hollywood has used the Atacama to depict Mars; some areas within the desert have received no rainfall in 400 years. On the drive through San Pedro, shepherds herd goats and llama through the town’s dusty streets, between centuries-old buildings of adobe brick. The night skies here are the clearest on Earth, 80 percent of the world’s astronomical infrastructure can be found here, and I take a drink from the hotel bar and sit outside watching a Milky Way

that extends all the way from one side of the sky to the other.

There are many activities to try – I stay at Nayara Alto Atacama which offers over 30 options. I take a 4WD across the desert to geysers 4,300 metres above sea level, travelling past pink flamingos feeding in salt lagoons. And I hike through Rainbow Valley, a 100-million-yearold enormous crevice in a mountain range. We travel across dry river beds till I arrive at a gap in the mountains where a Bedouin-style tent has been set up for me to spend the night, after a dinner prepared by a private chef.

We leave the next day, and the moment we move into Bolivia nothing seems the same. ‘Forget everything you know about Chile’ my guide tells me. The roads – bitumen

till now – have turned to volcanic ash. Everyone gets about in LandCruisers, the only vehicles tough enough for travel here on the high volcanic plain (altiplano), where we’ll reach altitudes of 5,000 metres above sea level.

We pass through the surreal-looking Desert Of Dali where pink flamingos stand in green lagoons. Then we’re driving across the world’s largest salt flat – 12,000 square kilometres of white crust, surrounded by brown mountains and volcanoes. We reach a silver Airstream camper parked in the middle of the salt flat, where a smiling chef is holding out a tray of canapés and wine.

Bolivia’s neighbours, Peru and Chile, attract millions of international travellers, but Bolivia remains something of a mystery. There are no

4 3 5 Sundowner | 1300 591 877 | www.abercrombiekent.com.au 43

other travellers around me now – in fact, I’ve seen only a handful all day. Out here, when we build a wood fire and eat under a billion stars, there are no other lights.

The rising sun lights up the volcano (Tunupa) which towers above. We visit the farming community nestled beneath the volcano, where locals go about their ancient tasks much as they always have. I’m driven to a cave beside the village; a farmer follows me on a moped and kick-starts an old generator into life to light up a chamber of stalactites and stalagmites. Tourism goes like this in Bolivia; it’s like you’ve travelled back through time, and it’s fast becoming one of the country’s most significant industries –but for now, you can enjoy it without the crowds.

Even the capital La Paz is mostly empty of the types of group travellers

you see in so many destinations today. But this is one of South America’s most pretty cities - built at 3,500 metres above sea level (it’s the world’s highest capital city). I walk along narrow, cobbled lanes, and through gaps in the streetscape I see snowcapped mountains.

In the evening light I couldn’t imagine a more stunning city on earth: from the bar of my hotel, Casa Grande, I look up at escarpments of rugged orangebrown rock. It’s a great city to walk in, if you have the calves for it, for there are no flat streets. There are modern cafés here to sit and people-watch in, but there are also markets where shaman still rule.

We move onwards to Bolivia’s most popular tourist region, Lake Titicaca, and yet it’s still peaceful here, and there are few visitors to deal with. It’s here

6 7 Sundowner www.abercrombiekent.com.au 44

on the Bolivian side of the lake that the Andes are more visible, some peaks above are nearly 7,000 metres high. Around here, I pass by fields of potato, maize and quinoa farmed by locals in traditional dress.

I take a hydrofoil to the Island of the Sun. Agricultural terraces – thousands of years old – are cut into the sides of the island, and are still farmed by the 800 families who live here. I sit outside a restaurant on a terrace overlooking the lake while a local family prepares my food.

I cross into Peru the next day, and while the history and the scenery of the country are overwhelming, I can’t help but hark back to Bolivia and its lack of crowds, and to Chile, a country I’d never thought to visit, but which offers so much for the adventure-seeking traveller.

Antarctica, South Georgia & The Falklands

When I originally researched a journey to Antarctica, I knew relatively nothing about the Falklands or South Georgia. Antarctica was my holy grail. But, having now returned from the trip, I can tell you that South Georgia and the Falklands make incredible additions to any Antarctica expedition, because they act as a grand cinematic build up to the white continent — all three destinations being among the most inhospitable, remote and captivating places on earth.

Our first stop was the sub-Antarctic Falkland Islands. With a population of just over 3,000, this far-flung natural paradise sees very few visitors, but we were able to take Zodiacs to the shore and wander along golden

beaches, beneath rogue cliffs, and hike across windswept hills. The Falklands is home to some of the most unique and abundant birdlife on the planet. I’ve never been much of a bird person myself, but the Falklands changed my mind forever. Our naturalist was so incredibly passionate. The amount of fascinating knowledge he had about the behaviours, personalities and eccentricities of these feathered creatures blew my mind. And the photographic expert onboard taught us all the skills for snapping the type of photography I could hang on my wall.

From here, we sailed to South Georgia as killer whales leapt three metres into the air alongside the ship, and albatross ducked and weaved above. South Georgia is

said to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, and I can testify to this: it was breathtaking. I saw glaciers rising out of the ocean and stretching up the sides of mountains, and the island was ringed by towering fjords. Completely uninhabited by humans, South Georgia is home to over 30 million penguins, and most of the world’s elephant and fur seals. It was outrageous to contrast the grandeur of the landscape with the almostcomical traffic of penguins and seals on the beach. The noise was deafening, both from the trumpeting of penguins to the whistling of chicks and the snorting of seals. At times penguins clumsily waddled up to us, as if to say hello, both curious and unafraid. This was a wildlife experience I’ll never forget.

We also explored the island with an A&K historian, who took us on an immersive journey through the life and death of one of the 20th century’s greatest polar explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton. Shackleton’s incredible survival tale is etched into the history of the island, and we visited legendary sites, including his grave in Grytviken, where he died in 1921. Our historian was a deft storyteller; it felt as if he’d roused Shackleton’s ghost straight out of the landscape.

As we began to sail towards Antarctica, our expedition crew gave presentations about the discovery of the White Continent, wildlife we’d encounter, icebergs and glaciers, history and explorers, and climate change. They also had a lot to say about what the continent can teach us

about Earth: its origins, how oceans operate on a larger scale, and the likely future of our climate. I was becoming nervous, afraid I’d built it up so much in my head that I’d be disappointed. But nothing was ever going to prepare me for the emotional and visceral impact of this immense, alien land, untouched by 200 million years. At twice the size of Australia with 95% glacial ice, the sheer size of it seemed to bring my small human life into stark relief. The views were imposing and magnificent, and everything screamed the power of nature.

The shapes and colours are what surprised me the most, I felt like I was in a gargantuan carving garden. Translucent blue sculptures, towering blue and white icebergs

4 5 3 Sundowner www.abercrombiekent.com.au 50

bobbing in the water, grey mountain peaks protruding through the ice, pebbled beaches, and vast glaciers in every shade of white. Hiking on the ice or gliding in our Zodiac through channels surrounded by blue chiselled ice blocks, as penguins did belly slides across the icesheet was surreal.

I expected Antarctica to be silent and still, but it was far from it. There were glaciers rumbling and moaning like thunder as they pushed and moved, and massive sheets of ice crashed into the sea. There were huge ice blocks making popping sounds as they floated in the water. There was the splutter of air from a whale’s blowhole, or the sea sucking in on itself as a huge whale leapt through and then slapped back down again.

There were seals lazily belching, while babies growled and wrestled on the beach. And of course, the ubiquitous slapping of penguin feet, and chicks squawking to be fed.

A&K were phenomenal. The quality of the ship and the extraordinary and varied expedition team made the journey relaxed and stylish, entertaining and super insightful. Now that I’ve returned, I can tell you that this is more than just the seventh continent and something for intrepid travellers to tick off their bucket list. It’s an experience that seems to flip human existence on its back, and a place that reveals the past, present and future of our planet. I finally found my holy grail, and it was the trip of a lifetime.

Morocco Five Ways

Morocco is the jewel in North Africa’s crown, a captivating blend of Islamic grandeur, European elegance, vivid colours and marvellous landscapes. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, a culture seeker or a travelling gourmand, it’s blessed with endless experiences for the intrepid traveller. From the golden dunes of the Sahara to the spice-laden souks of Fes and the indigenous peoples of the Atlas Mountains — this travel heavyweight deserves a place on your bucket list.

Sundowner www.abercrombiekent.com.au 52

1 For Trailblazers

The Sahara is the hottest desert in the world. But it is also a place with a fascinating history, stunning pink sunsets and spectacular stargazing. Venture into the burnt-orange dunes by 4WD as the sun sets over the endless horizon to A&K’s Private Desert Camp. Traditional drumming, a crackling fire, tented suite and Moroccan feast await. Relax by the bonfire, cocktail in hand, as the skyline gives way to a canopy of stars.

2 For The Gourmet Traveller

For the travelling gourmand, Morocco is a treat. The spiced scents of saffron and nutmeg fuse with the cooling aroma of mint tea in the cities, while almond, olive and orange trees grow wild and aromatic in the country’s farming regions. Come with us as we teach you to cook like a local in Marrakech. Hone your culinary skills with a dada (traditional family cook) during a Chef’s Table demonstration. You’ll learn to recognise and balance Moroccan spices and flavours, as your culinary coach reveals the secrets of bastilla and other local specialties.

3 For Rest & Repose

You might not think of Morocco when you think of rest and relaxation, but right in the heart of Marrakech sits the Relais & Châteaux property, La Villa Des Orangers — an oasis of serenity. Soften the skin with deep cleansing in the 60 square metre hammam, recline on the private terrace with a good book, and take a dip in three heated pools, including one with a 16 metre long basin. You’ll also want to indulge in the EC(H)O Spa with its plush menu of treatments for body, mind and soul.

4 For Authentic Village Life

The Berber people are North Africa’s indigenous, with a culture more than 4,000 years old. Nestled between sheer mountain cliffs and vast Saharan dunes, the Berber villages of the Atlas foothills preserve a traditional way of life that has endured for centuries. Experience an authentic encounter with a friendly local family, joining them in their home for traditional Berber bread, mint tea and conversation. This is an intriguing opportunity to share stories and learn about the rich cultural traditions of the largest indigenous tribe of North Africa.

5 For Garden Lovers

If you’re looking for a sense of enchantment and a cool refuge from the streets of Marrakech, the world-famous Jardin Majorelle is an essential experience for garden lovers. Cacti, bamboo, bougainvillea, banana trees and coconut palms jostle for space with jasmine, water lilies, giant agaves and pools, against a vibrant backdrop of azure, yellow and green. But there is more to this tropical paradise; Jardin Majorelle has an intriguing history as the inspiration for some of the 20th century’s most famous creatives — including Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé.

For more information about including any of these in your Tailor-Made Morocco Journey, please call A&K on 1300 591 877 or your local travel advisor.

Iceland notes from the field

Travelling from Reykjavík to the famed Golden Circle and beyond, A&K's Europe product expert Robina Frosinini recently returned from Iceland. Here, she shares some of her highlights from the field.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon is a showstopper, with a Michelinstarred restaurant, private lagoon and truly unique subterranean spa. All guests are invited on a geothermal journey through four rooms of volcanic rejuvenation, culminating in the ‘Ritual’, a seven-step deep cleansing treatment for the entire body. My daily routine consisted of morning yoga classes, subterranean spa visits, languid swims in the milky lagoon, and little treats from the indulgent list of spa therapies.

Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier

Snowmobiling over Langjökull Glacier was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. The glacier straddles two mighty volcanoes – one reason Iceland is called the land of fire and ice – and the views were spectacular, with towering glaciers and the geothermal Kerlingafjöll Mountain Range smoking in the distance. Carving my own way across the great white expanse with these vistas was magnificent. Sundowner www.abercrombiekent.com.au

TÖLT Speak-Easy

Reykjavík is well known for its ‘cool’ nightlife, and The TÖLT SpeakEasy bar was super suave. It’s sneakily built as part of the Edition Hotel in Reykjavík’s Old Harbour port. You have to be in the know to find this gem. It’s a hidden sanctuary with a cozy fire, red velvet cushions and a teal marble bar. The cocktail waiters had flair, and the drinks were dazzling.

Robina Frosinini Global Tailor Made Product Manager - Europe

The SandHolt

Dotted with boutique gift stores, vintage clothing shops, chic cafes and lively pubs, Reykjavík centre has quite the infectious buzz. On the Main Street, you’ll find the famed SandHolt, a fourth-generation artisanal bakery, with a fastmoving queue that trickles down the street. The tarts and pastries were absolutely mouth-watering, and we tucked into some warm-from-the-oven signature Icelandic crusty bread, with local cheeses and smoked salmon. Delicious.

Friðheimar Restaurant

Horticulture and tomato-inspired fare merge at this incredibly innovative restaurant and cafe set inside a working greenhouse on the Friðheimar estate. The menu is entirely farm to plate, and tomatoes are the star of the show. We sat among the tomato vines sampling everything from ravioli and mussels to tomato ice-cream and tomato beer — delicious, surprising and incredibly innovative.

Ritual Skincare Masks

At the Retreat, I was lucky enough to sample skin care products as part of the Blue Lagoon seven-step cleansing ‘Ritual’ — so I knew they were of high quality. I chose to purchase the Signature Mask box set: a limited-edition gift box of the Blue Lagoon’s iconic bioactive face masks. It came with a Silica Mud Mask, Algae Mask, Mineral Mask, and Lava Scrub Mask. Heavenly.
