This special visit is by kind permission of Her Majesty the Queen and is led by a member of staff who knows all of the castle’s ins and outs. Then continue to Cowdray House, your home for the next three nights. The 16,500-acre, family-owned Cowdray Estate is in West Sussex. The estate offers a complete range of country sports as well as lavishly tended grounds, with meals prepared from the estate’s own products. Cowdray House | Meals: B L D MAY 3: Goodwood Motor Circuit | Adrenaline on the Circuit After breakfast this morning, transfer by luxury car to Goodwood Motor Circuit, England’s greatest sporting estate, for a full day of track activities. Goodwood hosts the internationally famous Festival of Speed, The Qatar Goodwood Festival and Goodwood Revival, three of the largest events in the British sporting and social calendar. After some instruction from professional race car drivers, get behind the wheel of your classic or performance car and take to the track for a racing experience and some stunt driving. After lunch in the Jackie Stewart Pavilion, take to the track again for a BMW performance experience, and then follow a classic Land Rover route back to Goodwood House for a tour followed by afternoon tea. Tonight, enjoy dinner on HMS ‘Victory,’ Lord Horatio Nelson’s fabled flagship from the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This 104-gun Royal Navy ship launched in 1765 and is the world’s oldest naval vessel still in commission, with 243 years of distinguished service to its credit. Enjoy a guided tour of the ship’s interior, including the Upper Gun Deck where Lord Nelson kept elegant quarters, followed by a Champagne reception and three-course dinner, accompanied by a string quartet. MAY 4: Easebourne | A Day of Polo Cowdray House was home to the estate’s original polo field, commonly referred to as the House Ground. Geoffrey himself played here with His Royal Highness Prince Charles, leading the Windsor Park Polo Team to victory. This morning, meet with the professionals from the Cowdray Polo Academy and learn about this exciting traditional sport. Those who wish to try their hand at it may take some instruction from on-hand experts. Then, after a gourmet picnic lunch at the fields, enjoy a match put on especially for you. If you prefer, you may enjoy a round of golf at the Cowdray Golf Club. Enjoy cocktails and dinner at Cowdray House this evening. Cowdray House | Meals: B L D MAY 5: Roxburghshire, Scotland | The Ducal Estate Transfer by helicopter to Floors Castle in southeastern Scotland, the largest inhabited home in all of Scotland and the seat of the Duke of Roxburghe since it was built for the first duke 300 years ago in 1721. To commemorate the castle’s third centennial, view a special exhibition on the estate along with a new portrait of the Duke by Jamie Coreth, found in the main hall of the castle. After lunch, enjoy some time at leisure and explore the castle and grounds. Just a short walk from the castle are the spectacular Victorian Walled Garden and a formal Millennium Garden, and with the woodland and riverside walks and a delightful cycle trail, there is much for you to discover. Dine this evening at the castle. Floors Castle | Meals: B L D MAY 6: Alnwick Castle & Gardens | Private Garden Visit Today, head out in a fleet of chauffeured vehicles for the drive to Alnwick Castle. Alnwick has served as a military outpost, a teaching college, a refuge for evacuees and the filming location for Hogwarts, as well as the Percy family home. Explore the castle and learn about its history from one of the family members. After your private tour, you may opt to have a go at archery and test your abilities with a bow or learn to fly a broomstick in the spot where Harry Potter first took flight. Have lunch in the State Dining Room at the castle, hosted by the family, followed by a private tour of the award-winning Alnwick Garden, a modern delight combining sculpture, water features and beautiful plants. Geoffrey’s co-host during your journey is the hereditary owner of Floors Castle, His Grace the Duke of Roxburghe. Born Charles Innes-Ker, he was educated at Eton College and served in the famed Blues and Royals regiment of the British Army alongside his friend Prince Harry. Chief among his duties today is the overseeing of Floors Castle estate’s farm and businesses. Your visit includes a chance to experience the beautiful heather moorland landscape as well as view the Duke’s art collection, which includes Rembrandt’s An Old Woman Reading, family portraits by artists such as Thomas Gainsborough, landscapes by Paul Sandby and the Dutch masters, and cartoons by Georgian-era caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson. If you want to test your aim, the team can stage a simulated game drive, in which coveys of clay targets are used to simulate a real country shooting experience. JUNE 2: Napa Valley | Wine and Oysters This morning, head out in Sprinter convertibles across the Golden Gate Bridge and northward along Coastal Highway 1 through redwoods to Sonoma Valley. You are welcomed at the Farmhouse Inn Restaurant (Michelin 1-Star) with a private oyster- and wine-tasting reception on the lawn, hosted by local winemakers, followed by lunch with the owner. Farmhouse Inn, located in the heart of the Russian River Valley, is the gateway to Sonoma and features fresh ingredients straight from the owners’ farm, accompanied by fine wines perfectly suited to complement the dining experience. JUNE 7: Grand Canyon | Exploring with an Expert Board a charter aircraft for the short flight to the Grand Canyon Airport. Enjoy a private excursion in Grand Canyon National Park, including lunch on a private point jutting out over the canyon. With its staggering dimensions — 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and over a mile deep — Arizona’s Grand Canyon occupies a special place in the mythology of the American West. Carved out of layers of rock over untold millennia by the mighty Colorado River, the canyon annually welcomes millions who come to descend to its floor, fly over its vast expanse or simply stand on its rim and behold the view. Your excursion is led by Wayne Ranney, author of Carving Grand Canyon, and includes vista points, historic sites, a private visit to the home and studio of the Kolb Brothers (the first to photograph the canyon in late 19th century; their studio is not open to the public), the archives of the museum, and more. Conclude your visit to the canyon with a dramatic helicopter flightseeing excursion over the vast chasm. Return to the airport for your charter flight back to Amangiri. JUNE 10: Grand Teton National Park | Wildlife Spotting Head out early this morning for a game drive in Grand Teton National Park. For rugged, snow-capped peaks that jut upward into brilliant blue sky, and verdant, pristine valleys laced with rivers, forests, wildflowers and wildlife, few places in North America can rival Grand Teton National Park. Today, what
was once the isolated province of fur trappers and homesteaders is a bountiful natural treasure set aside for all to enjoy. Animals are at their most active as you set out, providing good opportunities for finding the park’s iconic species, including bears, moose, antelope, bison and elk. On the way back, drive by 4x4 to the nearby science base to meet some of the scientists who have been conducting research throughout the winter. After a special ceremony, visit the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Science Station to witness firsthand the often groundbreaking research conducted at this U.S. facility. DECEMBER 16–17: Antarctica | Climbing and Abseiling Return to Whichaway Camp. The next day, drive to a vast rock cliff overlooking the ice waves where your guides have established a rope walk over the cliff edge. Crossing it is technically easy, but thrilling nonetheless. There may be time for lessons in skiing, snowmobiling or, with expert tutelage, you may choose to abseil off the nearby nunatak, a mountain surrounded completely by an ice field. Whichaway Camp | Meals: B L D DECEMBER 18: Antarctica | Audience with Emperors Fly two and a half hours across Antarctica, skimming across the spectacular coastline before landing at an emperor penguin colony. Your is the only group to visit this specific colony. Surrounded by approximately 6,000 emperor penguins and their newly hatched chicks, get up close and personal to these real-life stars of March of the Penguins. Build a rock mound (or cairn) on the highest point to prove you were there; you even earn the right to name the mountain for the history books. Whichaway Camp | Meals: B L D DECEMBER 20: Antarctica | Explorers’ Tales Your journey includes a number of informal, riveting talks by polar experts, including a presentation by a record-breaking polar guide about the history of the race to the South Pole. Told in the most evocative setting imaginable, the tale transports you back to the time of Scott and Amundsen as they risked everything to be the first to reach the lowest point on earth. Today may also be a great day to picnic on the summit of a small ridge a short way from camp. In the evening, catch your flight back to Cape Town.
