RESTORATION Create indoor restorative spaces that promote the user’s mental and physical well-being. Research shows that providing users with direct access to natural settings enhances their well-being. •

Implement indoor natural elements, access to daylight and indoor-outdoor connections

Implement outdoor gardens to reinforce feelings of connectedness with nature

SPATIAL DEPTH + THRESHOLDS Design spaces incorporating a series of thresholds to emphasize the transitions between the main areas on the program. •

Implement wrapping elements within the space.

C O L O R PA L L E T T E Earthy tones will be used to enhance and compliment the connection with the outdoor natural environment.

FLEXIBILITY Design flexible spaces that provide the opportunity to alter one’s surroundings to cater to the user’s needs. •

Incorporate flexible seating arrangements accommodates every user’s preferences of social interaction or solitude. Studies show that establishing connections with others positively impacts the mental and physical health of humans.

COMPLEXITY + MYSTERY Design spaces with notable architectural features that promote interactions between the user and the physical environment while contributing to the user’s memorable experiences. Research shows that establishing connections with the environment and experiencing meaningful moments positively impact the well-being of users. •

Implement the use of various patterns and textures to encourage sensory stimulation.

Incorporate architectural lighting to influence users to engage with their surroundings.

Automated Louver System | Ceramic Sunscreen first used in the US at New York Times building, which was also design by Renzo Piano. The ceramic rods will move according to the sun’s penetration and will absorb the sun’s heat and prevent it from entering the building. This will help lower the amount of energy use by the cooling system in the facility. Ceramic rods were strategically placed to provide unobstructed views to users.

TEA HOUSE S A L O N & S PA

ABOUT The goal of this design is to create a space that provides a relief from the high-density nature of the Brickell city. A calming environment that promotes a sense of shelter where individuals can decompress and rejuvenate. The facility will offer dedicated retail areas designed to invite users to touch and explore the products. While the predominant use of pronounced architectural features resembling nature intents to stimulate users to engage with their physical environment.

CONCEPT In Japanese Zen philosophy, Wabi Sabi is expressed as minimalism with a conscious choice. While the roots of this philosophy trace back to the Japanese tea ceremony, it is often expressed through the example of a well-loved teacup. An artist made teacup whose constant use has led to chips or cracks, but it’s still valued for its composition. It is important to remind the observer that nothing in this world is permanent, and even fixed objects are subject to change. A piece of white paper can be viewed as minimalistic and simplistic in its form, while the art of origami is complex in nature. Each fold creates stability for the next and its final form is a result of complex steps to create perfection, to create art. While the paper has been manipulated to create a fixed object, it’s important to note that if unfolded, it is full of creases, but still valued for its originality. In Japanese culture, Wabi Sabi is strongly associated with the tea ceremony. A tradition that is also considered an art, it emphasizes the importance of a healing environment, an escape from reality, and most importantly the acceptance of yourself. In a Tea House, the host is said to pour the tea from ones heart and considers the guest with every movement and gesture. The guests experience becomes the ultimate priority for the host.

ABOUT CHANEL is known as a pioneer of modernity, defining trends in luxury and beauty. It is a company constantly seeking to reinvent itself, embrace innovation, and challenge existing boundaries through its creativity. “Where Comfort meets Beauty” Chanel’s motto, serves as guideline to successfully merge the brand’s values and the workplace’s needs. The goal of the design is to create aesthetically beautiful and functional spaces that will enhance the employees’ comfort and well-being.

CONCEPT Inspired by the ad images of Chanel’s 2012 Spring-Summer collection, the design of the new Chanel’s headquarters in Miami aims to exert a sense of serenity and balance. Setting a minimalistic feel with a strong presence of geometric shapes integrated through architectural elements. The office will provide various recreational areas and serendipitous zones to aid stimulate collaborations among employees and create a sense of community. Carefully designed spaces will help maximize the usage of daylight and allow a visual connection with the outdoors, this will promote the well-being of employees within the workplace. The design will also incorporate biophilia by creating areas that provide a sense of shelter to employees and avoid feelings of exposure.

ABOUT The Aventura Hospital Emergency Department will be designed using Martha Rogers’ nursing theory “A Science of Unitary Human Beings”. This theory focuses on the human and environmental connection. Rogers claims that human beings are an integral part of their environment rather than creatures that merely adapt to their environment.

MAIN ENTRANCE

CONCEPT Our main goal was to decode and implement two concepts’ within Martha Roger’s nursing theory. Openness: Roger states that human beings and their environments are considered open systems that are continuously exchanging energy. And Pattern + Organization: distinguished characteristics that give an identity to an energy field. In order to apply these theory concepts, we turned to Topography, believed to be a representation of the earth’s distinct features, not one contour line is the same. They are vast but still provide a sense of shelter. Topography will serve as a guideline to successfully merge of both of rogers concepts and the feelings we seek to evoke through the mood images below. The design aims to provide restorative spaces for users and caregivers to recover from mental fatigue by implementing natural elements and nature inspired architectural features within public and private areas of the ED. Welcoming spaces were created to offer users a sense of security through the use of a calming and serene color palette. Different level of privacy where also applied through out the emergency department to accommodate every users needs. N AT U R A L

AMERICAN SOCIAL BAR & KITCHEN

ABOUT

Revamp project of the existing American Social Bar & kitchen located in the downtown Miami neighborhood of Brickell. The sports bar offers indoor and outdoor dining experiences which includes an American comfort food menu, crafts beers, and handcrafted signature cocktails.

MAIN ENTRANCE

CONCEPT Lunch Atop a Sky Scraper. A ray of hope in an era of great depression. The moment captured in black and white was a triumph for the city and America in the peak of the economic crisis. A group of courageous steelworkers from all over the world daring life every day to build one of the most iconic cities in the world; Manhattan, the city build by immigrants. This image generated excitement and a positive attitude. It showed that America was still standing, still working and still progressing. The redesign of the existing American Social restaurant is inspired by the industrial and architectural aspects during the 1930s, and the development of metal framing. Indoor grid ceiling was inspired by the topographic view of the city of mahanttan. This iconic grid layout was meant to help structure the chaotic and sprawling evolution of the city in the 1800s. One of its strengths has been its flexibility to accommodate irregular spaces over time.

INTO THE WOODS

ABOUT Design for public restrooms inside Chanel’s Miami headquarters, following ADA standards. Both men and women restrooms will include a full ADA stall, changing table, garbage receptable, hand dryer, soap dispense, full-length mirror, and ADA sink. Women’s restrooms will also include fully equipped toilet stalls while men will include urinals.

M E N ’S R E S T R O O M

CONCEPT Inspired by Chanel’s 2018 Fall collection, which was staged as a beautiful forest in Autumn. The design of these public restrooms aim to merge the feeling of being out in the woods during an eternal Autumn season with the sophisticated and simplistic style that characterizes the Chanel brand. This was achieved by implementing architectural features with clean lines and by the used of materials that are found or resemble nature. Oak wood, Marble, concrete and wood like porcelain tile were used for this project. The color palette was kept minimal and neutral mainly consisting on the colors provided by the textured materials, wood and gray tones were predominant through out the space. The color black; one of the main colors of the brand, was strategically used in frames and door handles to not darken the space but providing that much needed depth.
