The second edition of our innovative Safle 2 / Site 2 micro-festival of theatre performed in new and unusual ways, featuring a range of performances everywhere from down by the seaside to a shipping container, on a stage, in a tiny room and even in the theatre! This spring the Arts Centre relaunches its groundbreaking Theatre for Change strand. The selected performances and events all address issues and ideas that are of political, social and moral importance in today’s world. From a play based on the real-life experiences of displaced people to a performance asking questions about direct political action, an event which challenges attitudes and bias, and a show about climate change, all the works in the strand aim to stimulate thought and debate about the most pressing issues of our time. A symposium in partnership with the University’s Department of International Politics provides an opportunity to debate some of the issues and an exhibition in Gallery 2 offers another reflection on the issue of homelessness.

Les Pêcheurs de Perles
Murder She Didn’t Write
For the first time since Enrico Caruso starred in the opera in 1916, the Met will present Bizet’s lush, melodic romance Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), in a production by director Penny Woolcock. Gianandrea Noseda conducts a cast led by Diana Damrau as the beautiful priestess Leïla. Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien sing the roles of Nadir and Zurga, the two pearl fishers whose friendship is tested by their rivalry for Leïla’s affections; their ‘Au fond du temple saint’ is one of the best-known duets in opera. Nicolas Testè sings the high priest Nourabad in the new production.
One hour to come up with the perfect crime... and then solve it! Move over, Sherlock! Watch your very own Agatha Christie-inspired masterpiece unfold on stage as the audience helps create an original and hilarious improvised murder mystery. The company will take your title suggestions, evidence ideas and for one lucky member even the murderer and victim, to create a never before seen, unscripted murder mystery, which promises to dazzle, enthral, and delight. A must for all lovers of classic crime fiction! Will you work out whodunnit in time?

As the cauldron bubbled an eldritch voice shrieked: ‘When shall we three meet again?’ There was a pause. Finally another voice said, in a far more ordinary tones: ‘Well, I can do next Tuesday?’ King Verence I of Lancre is murdered by his cousin, Duke Felmet, after his ambitious wife persuades him to do so. Frank Bridge – 3 Songs (1906-7) Brahms – 2 Songs Op. 91 Mozart – Clarinet Trio in Eb major ‘Kegelstatt’ Jean Francaix – Clarinet Trio
This programme features the viola at its most lyrical in rarely heard songs for mezzo soprano, viola and piano and its most virtuosic in the quirky music of Jean Francaix. Frank Bridge is a 20th century English composer. His songs are in a late-Romantic lyrical style. Brahms songs are again late romantic and very attractive. The Mozart Clarinet trio is sometimes called the Skittle trio because they thought it was written while he was playing skittles! It is wonderfully elegant showing the viola, clarinet and piano off equally. Jean Francaix is a 20th century French composer who wrote in a very quirky and fun style. ___ Rhaglen gynhwysfawr ac amrywiol yn nodweddu cerddoriaeth ar gyfer y clarinet, piano, fiola a mezzo soprano.

Okham’s Razor
Tipping Point Set in the round with the audience drawn in close, the action veers from catastrophe to mastery. Five performers, enclosed within the circle of the stage, transform simple metal poles into a rich landscape of images. Poles are balanced on fingertips, hung from the roof, lashed, climbed, swung from and walked along, they become forests, cross roads and pendulums. The performers balance, climb and cling to this teetering world, supporting each other as they wrestle with the moment when things begin to shift. They must decide whether to rail against the chaos, struggling to exert order on a disordered world, or ride it out, allowing life to tilt towards the tipping point. ___ Pum perfformiwr yn trawsffurfio polion metel syml yn dirwedd gyfoethog o ddelweddau. By Michael Morpurgo 1945. Dresden, Germany. Lizzie, her mother - and an elephant from the zoo, flee the Allied fire-bombing in the endgame of the Second World War. Escaping the Allies’ advance from the West - and also the advancing Russian armies from the East - this extraordinary trio of refugees meet: a downed RAF officer, cowering in a barn; a homeless school choir on the run and their Countess saviour, harbouring them from the Nazis; and the mechanised American cavalry, appearing over the horizon. It is Lizzie’s story – but Marlene, the elephant, is the heroine. Theatre for Change

Aczel is known for not following the rules of stand-up comedy and he aims to use his show, with the help of Chaos Theory, to change the world once and for all – although it may turn out to be too complicated. He asks whether you can have your cake and eat it – ie seek to change human consciousness forever and keep your weekends free. Bringing Maths, History and Improv to life for beginners, he explores his own inner psyche with a section analysing his dreams – and then tries not to get too paranoid. ___ Mae Aczel yn adnabyddus am beidio â chadw at reolau comedi ar ei sefyll ac mae’n anelu at ddefnyddio’i sioe i newid y byd unwaith ac am byth – er y gall hyn droi allan i fod yn rhy gymhleth. This Olivier Award-winning version of Puccini’s muchloved weepie is a favourite with critics and audiences alike. One of the most accessible and moving operas ever written, La Bohème charts the ups and downs of a group of idealistic graduates as they bicker, party, try to make ends meet and follow their dreams. Aspiring novelist Rodolfo discovers a harsher reality when he falls for immigrant cleaner Mimi, while his best friend Marcello’s tempestuous relationship with his on-off girlfriend Musetta brings humour and fireworks to the stage. The comic elements of this hugely popular production heighten its tragic ending, with audiences saying this 21st century Bohème affected them like no other. New English Version by Robin Norton-Hale. ___

Magic of Motown
When retired farmer Dai Verse made his first appearance on the stage a few years ago, he talked wistfully about a vanished way of life and appeared to be a character who was living solely in the past. But there has been a change - verging on the seismic! Dramatic & unexpected events have forced him to take stock of everything and as a result he’s left the old farm, thrown away his cap and stick and enrolled on a course of higher education ‘to get a fresh perspective on life before it’s too late’. Jez Danks tells the story of a man who has decided that it’s never too late to change – but will it be for the better?
Have you ever crossed the line between love and obsession? Love and abuse? Love and... Opium ? This body and voice based performance examines emotional state of a woman who, due to emotional traumas form the past, becames a person craving love too much: The Love Addict. Spending her entire energy on love and not getting enough of it back, she starts to abuse it. Devised from personal experience, as well as from research on relationship addiction, based on the book ‘Women Who Love Too Much’ by Robin Norwood.

The Birthday Party By Harold Pinter “There’s a gentleman living here. He’s got a birthday today, and he’s forgotten all about it. So we’re going to remind him. We’re going to give him a party.” A shabby boarding house in a small English seaside town. An elderly couple take care of a solitary guest, who rarely ventures out. The arrival of two enigmatic strangers seems to offer a welcome distraction from their mundane existence. Wales Festival of Architecture
Gwˆyl Bensaernïaeth Cymru
The Wales Festival of Architecture returns to Aberystwyth in April and May, with a programme of talks, films, exhibitions and book launches, once again exploring ‘the power and pleasures of well-considered buildings and places’. Photographer James Morris gives us a fascinating glimpse of what it’s like for the residents, workers or students in recent awardwinning buildings in Wales, from schools to individual homes. A panel discussion explores innovative ways to reclaim neglected buildings to help solve the challenge of affordable housing in the countryside. With satellite events across Wales, we hope the 2016 Festival of Architecture will have something of interest for everyone who cares about the places and spaces around us.
Mae Gŵyl Bensaernïaeth Cymru yn dychwelyd i Aberystwyth yn ystod mis Ebrill a Mai, gyda rhaglen o anerchiadau, ffilmiau, arddangosfeydd a lansiadau llyfrau, unwaith eto yn archwilio ‘grym a phleserau adeiladau a llefydd a ystyrir yn dda’. Mae’r ffotograffydd James Morris yn rhoi cipolwg hynod diddorol i ni o brofiadau’r sawl sy’n byw neu’n gweithio mewn adeiladau yng Nghymru a enillodd wobrau, yn amrywio o ysgolion i gartrefi unigol. Gwener 11 – Iau 17 Mawrth
WOW Film Festival returns with an intriguing and eclectic selection of the very best in world cinema for you to enjoy. We’re delighted to screen Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s 1928 classic Arsenal, about the tragedy of the Russian Civil War, accompanied by an extraordinary new live soundtrack by Guy Bartell (Brondtt Industries Kapital). Other must-see films include Rams, a wonderfully wry portrait of farming life in Iceland in which two estranged brothers must unite to save their beloved sheep; and Patricio Guzmán’s stunningly beautiful The Pearl Button, about the fates of Patagonia’s indigenous water nomads and the political prisoners of Chile’s Pinochet era.
Mae Gŵyl Ffilmiau Cymru a’r Byd yn Un yn dychwelyd gyda detholiad diddorol ac eclectig o’r gorau oll yn sinema’r byd i chi ei fwynhau. Mae’n bleser mawr gennym sgrinio clasur 1928 Oleksandr Dovzhenko sef Arsenal, ynglyn â thrasiedi’r Rhyfel Cartref yn Rwsia, gyda thrac sain byw newydd eithriadol gan Guy Bartell (Brondtt Industries Kapital). Mae uchafbwyntiau eraill yn cynnwys Rams, portread hynod o fywyd ffarm yng Ngwlad yr Iâ lle rhaid i ddau frawd sydd wedi ymbellhau ddod at ei gilydd er mwyn achub eu defaid; a ffilm hynod brydferth Patricio Guzmán, The Pearl Button, am dynged nomadiaid dŵr cynhenid Patagonia a charcharorion gwleidyddol cyfnod Pinochet yn Chile.

The Human Face
Hollow: Jenny Hall
An opportunity to see portraits by some of the 20th Century’s best known British artists, with works by many artists including Stanley Spencer, John Bellany, Jacob Epstein and Elizabeth Frink. With a wide range of technique and medium, this lively and inspiring exhibition reflects the diversity of approach possible towards a perennial subject, and offers a welcome opportunity to see works by well loved artists. This exhibition draws on one of the best private collections of modern British art, the Ingram Collection of Modern & Contemporary Art; which is owned by Chris Ingram, a media entrepreneur, and has been “created with exemplary visual flair and an unerring eye for quality”. (Robert Upstone, Director Fine Art Society and former Tate curator) The Lightbox Woking; with thanks to The Ingram Collection
Cyfle i weld portreadau gan rai o artistiaid Prydeinig mwyaf adnabyddus yr 20fed Ganrif, gyda gwaith gan artistiaid megis Stanley Spencer, John Bellany, Jacob Epstein ac Elizabeth Frink. Gydag amrediad helaeth o dechneg a chyfrwng, mae’r arddangosfa fywiog ac ysbrydoledig hon yn adlewyrchu’r amrywiaeth o dechneg sy’n bosibl yn y maes, ac yn cynnig cyfle i werthfawrogi gwaith gan artistiaid poblogaidd. Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn tynnu ar un o’r casgliadau preifat gorau o gelf Brydeinig fodern, Casgliad Ingram o Gelf Fodern & Chyfoes; a berchnogir gan Chris Ingram, entrepreneur y cyfryngau, ac sydd wedi’i greu gyda “dawn weledol benigamp a llygad ddi-ffael am ansawdd”. Taking a copper mine as a source of inspiration this exhibition explores the creative destruction involved in the act of construction. The mine is represented as a large hollow sculpture in the gallery and loose cardboard boxes represent the ‘ore’ that has been extracted from inside. The public are invited to move, stack, connect and build with this ore while occupying and considering the empty space left behind. The exhibition also explores displacement: of an idea, of a material. Cardboard boxes are the perfect material for expressing a thing displaced, these connect together with magnets. Jenny is the director of architectural design practice Craftedspace. Symposium exploring exhibition themes on Wed April 13th at 7pm in Gallery 1, hosted by The Centre for Cultures of Place Workshops available see page 54 for details

Yn cymryd cloddfa copr fel ffynhonnell ysbrydoliaeth, mae’r arddangosfa hon yn archwilio’r dinistriad creadigol sy’n ymwneud â’r weithred o adeiladu. Cynrychiolir y gloddfa fel cerflunwaith gwag enfawr yn yr oriel ac mae blychau cardboard rhyddion yn cynrychioli’r ‘mwyn’ sydd wedi’i gloddio o’r tu mewn. Gwahoddir y cyhoedd i symud, stacio, cysylltu ac adeiladu gyda’r mwyn hwn tra’n llenwi ac yn ystyried y gofod gwag a adewir ar ôl. Mae’r arddangosfa hefyd yn archwilio dadleoliad: o syniad, o ddeunydd. Blychau cardboard yw’r deunydd perffaith i fynegi dadleoliad rhywbeth; cysylltir y rhain â’i gilydd gyda magnedau. Jenny yw cyfarwyddwraig y cwmni dylunio pansaernïol Craftedspace.

Andrew McNeill Under the Bridge: being homeless in Cardiff Andrew McNeill is best known for his photographic work in South East Asia; looking closer to home he has now completed a project on the homeless in Cardiff. The Cardiff-born photographer spent months building relationships with those he photographed, sleeping rough on the streets with them to gain an insight in to their daily lives; resulting in this very powerful suite of portraits. Part of the Theatre for Change series
___
Mae Andrew McNeill yn fwyaf adnabyddus am ei waith ffotograffig yn Ne-Ddwyrain Asia; gan droi ei sylw at thema sy’n agosach at gartref mae ‘nawr wedi cwblhau prosiect am bobl ddigartref yng Nghaerdydd. Treuliodd y ffotograffydd, a anwyd yng Nghaerdydd, fisoedd yn datblygu perthynas gyda’r sawl yr oedd yn eu ffotograffu, yn cysgu allan ar y strydoedd gyda nhw er mwyn deall eu bywydau o ddydd i ddydd. Y canlyniad yw’r casgliad hynod bŵerus hwn o bortreadau.
The latest in a series of joint exhibitions for American artist Linda Alterwitz and British artist Ruth Thomas. Both artists draw inspiration from their immediate environment and, through printmaking and photography, throw light on subjects which are generally hidden from view or simply go unnoticed. The collagraph prints of Ruth Thomas reflect the area of rural Wales where she lives, through the use of natural materials and organic structures. Linda Alterwitz often photographs her more urban surroundings, and by layering these with medical images such as radiographs and scans, she makes connections between art and science. ___ Y ddiweddaraf mewn cyfres o arddangosfeydd ar y cyd rhwng yr artist Americanaidd Linda Alterwitz a’r artist o Brydain Ruth Thomas. Mae’r ddwy yn tynnu ysbrydoliaeth o’r amgylchedd o’u cwmpas a thrwy greu printiau a ffotograffiaeth, maent yn denu sylw at wrthrychau sydd fel arfer yn cael eu cuddio o’r golwg neu sy’n osgoi sylw. Mae printiau colagraff Ruth Thomas yn adlewyrchu’r Gymru wledig lle mae hi’n byw, trwy’r defnydd o ddeunyddiau naturiol a strwythurau organig. Mae Linda Alterwitz yn aml yn ffotograffu amgylchedd mwy trefol, a gan gyflwyno’r lluniau hyn ochr yn ochr â delweddau meddygol megis radiograffau a sganiau, mae’n creu cysylltiadau rhwng celf a gwyddoniaeth.

Honno Writing Workshops Symbols for Writers: Rosie Dub Sunday 13 March 2–5pm / £18 (£15) In a sense symbols and metaphors inhabit the world of poetry. They are the language of the heart rather than the head. However, this doesn’t limit them to poetic forms. As story tellers we can enrich and add greater depth to our work by consciously exploring their use. Through discussion, readings and writing exercises we identify the symbols in our stories and work on consciously developing their effectiveness. Rosie Dub is the author of two novels, Gathering Storm (Penguin 2008) and Flight (HarperCollins 2012). She has just completed a new novel and is also working on a nonfiction book called the Alchemy of Story. Rosie is also an editor and mentor, and is currently a Creative Writing Fellow at Aberystwyth University.
“You talkin’ to me?” Writing memorable dialogue in prose; Emma Musty Sunday 17 April 2–5pm / £18 (£15) This workshop will cover different methods for including dialogue within prose while referencing memorable moments of dialogue in fiction. To understand the mechanics of successful dialogue we will pick a part these examples in order to gain tools for our own dialogue construction. Working from life and workshop prompts we will then create our own memorable dialogue which successfully contains the illusion of reality while at the same time building tension. Emma Musty has just completed a Creative Writing PhD at Aberystwyth University. Her work has appeared widely both in print and online in publications including Aesthetica and Cheval 5, published by Parthian. Both of her novels were longlisted in the Mslexia Novel Prize 2014. She currently teaches at Aberystwyth University and provides creative writing workshops in the community.

A day of talks, films and discussions by academics and practitioners on the theme of art-science collaborations in the Anthropocene, a proposed new geological time interval that suggests that humans are now the dominant influence shaping the Earth system. Are human activities such as agriculture, mining and urbanisation leaving distinctive ‘footprints’ in the Earth’s strata that will endure into the future and so enter the long-term geological record? What are the creative responses to such propositions? The event
is a collaboration between Aberystwyth University School of Art and the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, and supported by the British Society for Geomorphology. Ewch i www.hynt.co.uk neu www.hynt.cym am wybodaeth ac arweiniad am y cynllun. Gallwch hefyd gael gwybod os gallwch chi neu’r person rydych yn gofalu amdano/i ymuno â’r cynllun a chwblhau ffurflen gais.
