People’s Stories / Straeon Pobl This Spring and Summer we’re presenting our People’s Stories season. We’ve chosen a range of work that looks at and celebrates many different personal stories – from the large-scale play Pink Mist about the stories of young men and their families returning from Afghanistan, and the studio show from Paine’s Plough Every Brilliant Thing, a surprisingly upbeat show about families and depression - a huge hit at the Edinburgh Festival, to George Monbiot’s evening of songs and discussion about being lonely. Alongside this there’s the major exhibition Stitched Voices showing textiles produced through conflict and for peace, and Yma o Hyd – photographs and words about the people and place of Borth. In the Cinema the WOW Film Festival showcases stories of personal resistance across the world. From the lives of those overcoming conflict to heart-warming stories of everyday life there’s plenty in People’s Stories to make us think, laugh and cry. All events in the People’s Stories season are listed with page numbers for further details and accompanying talks, or see our website for details. ___ Yn ystod y Gwanwyn a’r Haf eleni ‘rydym yn cyflwyno ein tymor Straeon Pobl. ‘Rydym wedi dewis amrediad o waith sy’n ystyried ac yn dathlu llawer o wahanol straeon personol - yn cynnwys y ddrama gynhwysfawr Pink Mist am straeon dynion ifanc a’u teuluoedd yn dychwelyd o Afghanistan; y sioe stiwdio gan gwmni Paine’s Plough Every Brilliant Thing, sy’n sioe annisgwyl o galonogol am deuluoedd ac iselder, a gafodd dderbyniad brwd iawn yng Ngŵyl Caeredin - a noson George Monbiot yn cyflwyno caneuon a thrafodaeth ynglyn â bod yn unig. Ynghyd â’r sioeau hyn ceir yr arddangosfa sylweddol Stitched Voices yn arddangos tecstiliau a gynhyrchwyd trwy wrthdaro ar gyfer heddwch, ac Yma o Hyd – ffotograffau a geiriau am bobl a thref y Borth. Yn y Sinema mae Gŵyl Ffilmiau Cymru a’r Byd yn Un (WOW) yn cyflwyno straeon am wrthsafiad personol ledled y byd. Yn amrywio o fywydau’r sawl sy’n goresgyn gwrthdaro i straeon calonogol am fywyd bob dydd, mae ‘na ddigon yn Straeon Pobl i wneud i ni feddwl, chwerthin a chrio. RSC Live

Nabucco

The Tempest

Wardens Theatre Company

The legendary Plácido Domingo brings another new baritone role to the Met under the baton of his longtime collaborator James Levine. Liudmyla Monastyrska is Abigaille, the warrior woman determined to rule empires, and Jamie Barton is the heroic Fenena. Dmitri Belosselskiy is the stentorian voice of the oppressed Hebrew people.

Simon Russell Beale returns to the RSC after 20 years to play Prospero in this groundbreaking production directed by Artistic Director Gregory Doran. On a distant island a man waits. Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man, and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems.

Jack and the Beanstalk Join the Wardens for their annual traditional panto – last year was a complete sell-out so early booking strongly recommended! Great entertainment and lots of fun for all ages. The production, by director Bartlett Sher, has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. Swan Lake

The Flaky Tarts

At moonlight on the banks of a mysterious lake, Prince Siegfried meets the bewitched swanwoman Odette. Completely spellbound by her beauty, he swears his faithfulness to her. However, the Prince realizes too late that Fate has another plan for him…. A ballet of ultimate beauty and a Tchaikovsky’s score of unparalleled perfection was born at the Bolshoi in 1877. Classical ballet at its finest.

The Flaky Tarts are a very impressive acoustic trio, playing various styles of guitars to make their unique sound of close harmonies and exciting musical sounds. They perform Folk through to Country and Rock. Self penned material is mixed with sing along classics which makes for compulsory foot tapping. Humour through quips and observations compliment the well played music, so be prepared for laughter. You can look forward to a very entertaining evening from these three experienced entertainers. Breaking The Spell of Loneliness

Great Expectations Great Expectations follows the life of Pip, a young orphan, on his journey from a child to an adult. Dickens creates such great characters, including, Pip’s sister Mrs Joe and the terrifying convict Magwitch, and of course the eccentric Miss Havisham and her beautiful but proud ward Estella. Pip has the opportunity to better himself when he inherits a fortune from a mysterious benefactor. He goes to London, leaving his life and family behind, to become a ‘gentleman’, but there he discovers his true self and who his benefactor is. Neil Bartlett ignites Dickens work, in real electrifying style, with the use of an ensemble cast and dramatic imagery. ___ Cynhyrchiad trawiadol llawn egni o waith enwog Dickens, yn defnyddio cast ensemble a delweddaeth ddramatig.

George Monbiot & Ewan McLennan

About a year ago, author and journalist George Monbiot wrote an article for The Guardian on the personal and social effects of loneliness that quickly went viral. His first inclination, to write a book on the subject, soon gave way to the idea that the topic might be better conveyed through song. With this in mind he approached folk singer and songwriter Ewan McLennan and suggested a collaboration. Ewan will sing ‘a cappella’ with guitar and banjo, which will be interspersed with George’s depiction of the human stories behind the songs. Expect a unique and one-off interplay of songs and stories. Part of the People’s Stories Season.

Hedda Gabler

Conductor / Arweinydd: Jonathan Lyness Director / Cyfarwyddwr: Richard Studer

Written and Performed by Gareth Clark, (F.E.A.R.) is a one-man show about constructed fear that asks directly if the world wants us to feel safe. “I’ve no talent for life.” Just married. Bored already. Hedda longs to be free... Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. A Contemporary Evening

The Pied Piper re-told by Mike Kenny, performed by Jason Lusted with live music from Chris Preece. Directed by Phil Clark Browning’s classic poem about the disappearing children of Hamelin is reimagined for our time. What happened to the children of Hamelin? Did they disappear? Or did they return to create a new society? The Lame Boy - the Sole Survivor - performed by Jason Lusted, retells that epic story whilst standing for the post of Lord Mayor for the new town of Hamelin. Will you follow him? Will you support democracy? With music, humour and innovative soundscape. A new play by awardwinning writer, Mike Kenny, one of the country’s most acclaimed writers for children. Suitable for age 7+. ___ Drama newydd gyffrous gan y dramodydd arobryn Mike Kenny, un o’r awduron mwyaf poblogiadd i blant. In his new production, Robert Carsen, the director behind the Met’s recent Falstaff, places the action at the end of the Habsburg Empire, underscoring the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask, in a staging that also stars Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs. Sebastian Weigle conducts the sparklingly perfect score. Live screening. 5hrs approx.

April – May / Ebrill – Mai

Wales Festival of Architecture 2017 Gwˆ yl Bensaernïaeth Cymru 2017 The Wales Festival of Architecture returns in April and May, with Aberystwyth Arts Centre once again the main hub of activity, hosting a programme of talks, films and exhibitions exploring the positive impact that good architecture has on people’s experience. The main Festival exhibition features the work of photographer James Morris and poet Elis Dafydd, who were invited to respond to awardwinning buildings in Wales on the theme of ‘For the People’, at the 2016 National Eisteddfod. To coincide with Visit Wales’s 2017 Year of Legends cultural programme, the Festival includes a discussion about the legends of Wales’s rich built heritage and landscape, as well as an update on a competition to design a ‘pop-up’ mobile hotel – using Welsh materials to create unique glamping units. With satellite events across Wales, we hope the 2017 Festival of Architecture will have something of interest for everyone who cares about the places and spaces around us.

Mae Gŵyl Bensaernïaeth Cymru yn dychwelyd ym mis Ebrill a Mai, gyda Chanolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth unwaith eto wrth wraidd y gweithgareddau, yn cynnal rhaglen o anerchiadau, ffilmiau ac arddangosfeydd yn ystyried yr effaith bositif y mae pensaernïaeth dda yn cael ar brofiad pobl. Mae prif arddangosfa’r Ŵyl yn nodweddu gwaith y ffotograffydd James Morris a’r bardd Elis Dafydd, a gafodd eu gwahodd i ymateb i adeiladau arobryn yng Nghymru ar y thema ‘Ar gyfer y Bobl’, yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 2016. I gydfynd â rhaglen ddiwylliannol Blwyddyn Chwedlau ‘Ymweld â Chymru’ 2017, mae’r Ŵyl yn cynnwys trafodaeth ynglyn â chwedlau treftadaeth a thirwedd adeiledig cyfoethog Cymru, yn ogystal â diweddariad ar gystadleuaeth i ddylunio gwesty symudol sydyn - gan ddefnyddio deunyddiau Cymreig i greu unedau ‘glampio’ unigryw. Gyda gweithgareddau cysylltiedig ledled Cymru, gobeithiwn y bydd gan Ŵyl Bensaernïaeth 2017 rywbeth at ddant pawb sy’n ymddiddori yn y llefydd a’r gofod o’n cwmpas.

Dave Ball: Searching for the Welsh Landscape Searching for the Welsh Landscape is a body of new work by Dave Ball exploring the (questionable) notion that national identity subsists in the landscape. Based on a survey of five distinct hilly regions in Wales, the exhibition exhaustively attempts to address the question of whether there is such a thing as a perfect, archetypal Welsh mountain. ___ Corff o waith newydd gan Dave Ball yw Searching for the Welsh Landscape sy’n ystyried y cwestiwn (dadleuol) bod hunaniaeth genedlaethol yn bodoli yn y dirwedd. Edgelands Edgelands takes its inspiration from the overlooked areas of land on the borders between the town and the countryside; often the outskirts of cities that hardly receive our attention. This collection of contemporary painting celebrates these forgotten margins of our landscape and considers how we perceive the world, not just in terms of what we see, but also how we feel and behave as a developing civilisation.

Image / llun: Barbara Howey. Car park. 30 x 40 cm. Oil on board

Ysbrydolir Edgelands gan y darnau o dir a esgeulusir ar yr ymylon rhwng trefi a chefn gwlad; yn aml cyrion dinasoedd nad ydym yn talu unrhyw sylw iddynt. Mae’r casgliad hwn o baentiadau cyfoes yn dathlu’r ymylon anghofiedig hyn o’n tirwedd ac yn ystyried sut yr ydym yn sylwi ar y byd, nid yn unig mewn termau yr hyn yr ydym yn gweld, ond hefyd sut yr ydym yn teimlo ac yn ymddwyn fel gwareiddiad sy’n datblygu.

UK Music is the trade body for the music industry and members are: AIM, BASCA, BPI, FAC, MMF, MPA, MPG, MU, PPL, PRS for Music and the Live Music Group.
