Welcome to Abertoir 2009! A massive selection of films, events, guests and alcoholic drinks await everyone at the fourth Abertoir Horror Festival, the National Horror Festival of Wales! We have grown incredibly since our humble beginnings, and owe it all to the continued enthusiastic support of every one of you! In addition, the Film Agency for Wales have been tremendous in supporting Abertoir, and it is because of their generous help that we are able to put on such a big festival and keep the ticket prices so small! This year, we tried to get less films to enable longer lunch breaks... but we failed miserably. We will therefore be issuing cable ties or colostomy bags to anyone who needs them. So thanks for coming, sit back, enjoy the festival, and have a bloody good time!

Herschell Gordon Lewis
Known as ‘The Godfather of Gore’, Herschell Gordon Lewis changed the face of horror films as we know them today. In 1963, spotting a gap in the market, Herschell created what is arguably the very first splatter film with Blood Feast. A remarkable success, it was obvious that blood is what the audience wanted, and blood is what the audience should get. He followed up his breakthrough film with other entries such as 2000 Maniacs, The Wizard of Gore, Color Me Blood Red and The Gore Gore Girls. No stranger to the Grindhouse and drive-in circuit, his films have even included the female biker movie (She-Devils on Wheels) and plenty of ‘nudie-cutie’ entries to keep many a cinema patron entertained. He’s also one of America’s leading direct-marketing consultants. Lecturing in mass communication and speaking at advertising conferences around the world, Herschell has written a large amount of books on the subject, and is highly sought after as a specialist in this field. Now, nearly 50 years after Blood Feast first disturbed and shocked cinema audiences for the first time, he is returning to the directors chair for The Uh-Oh Show, starring none other than previous Abertoir guest, Lloyd Kaufman. We are extremely honoured and delighted to be receiving Herschell Gordon Lewis as a guest at Abertoir this year, and hope that everyone enjoys the chance to meet this true legend of horror cinema. Yn cael ei alw’n The Godfather of Gore, newidiodd Herschell Gordon Lewis wyneb ffilmiau arswyd fel yr ydym yn eu hadnabod heddiw. Ym 1963, pan welodd fwlch yn y farchnad, creuodd Herschell y ffilm arswyd gyntaf o’i math sef Blood Feast. Bu hon yn llwyddiant ysgubol ac ‘roedd yn amlwg mai gweld rhagor o waed oedd dymuniad y gynulleidfa! Dilynodd ei ffilm arloesol gyntaf gyda rhai eraill megis 2000 Maniacs, The Wizard of Gore, Color Me Blood Red a The Gore Gore Girls. Mae’n gyfarwydd â’r cylch Grindhouse ac mae ei ffilmiau wedi cynnwys She-Devils on Wheels a llawer o rai cyffelyb i gadw mynychwyr y sinema’n ddifyr! Mae ef hefyd yn byw bywyd dwbl fel un o ymgynghorwyr marchnata mwyaf blaenllaw America. Mae wedi darlithio ar gyfathrebu a marchnata ledled y byd gan ysgrifennu nifer helaeth o lyfrau ar y pwnc a cheir llawer o alw am ei wasanaethau fel arbenigwr yn y maes hwn. ‘Nawr, bron 50 mlynedd ers i Blood Feast aflonyddu a rhoi ysgytwad i gynulleidfaoedd y sinema am y tro cyntaf, mae e’n dychwelyd at gadair y cyfarwyddwr ar gyfer The Uh-Oh Show, gyda chyn-westai Abertoir sef Lloyd Kaufman yn chwarae’r brif ran. Mae’n fraint mawr gennym groesawu Herschell Gordon Lewis fel gwestai yn ystod Abertoir eleni, a gobeithiwn fod pawb yn mwynhau’r cyfle i sgwrsio gydag un o wir enwogion y sinema arswyd.

Doug Bradley
Actor Doug Bradley’s role as Pinhead in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser series has made him an iconic personality in the horror genre, recognisable all over the world. Forging a successful career in film and theatre, Doug will be live on stage at Abertoir to present his special talk on horror effects and present the latest addition to his Spinechillers series. Born in Liverpool in 1954, Doug Bradley was educated at Quarry Bank High School and Liverpool University. It was at school that he first met and worked with Clive Barker. Doug received no formal acting training but after leaving the University he began working in fringe theatre in Liverpool. After forming a theatre company and touring the UK, Holland and Belgium, Doug continued to work on the stage in London and provincial repertory theatre, appearing in a wide variety of roles and productions. In 1986, Barker invited Doug to play the chief of the mysterious Cenobites - now universally known as Pinhead - in the film Hellraiser. The film’s success led to the sequels Hellbound, Hell on Earth, and Bloodline. In 1988 he teamed up with Barker again, appearing as Lylesberg in Nightbreed. Titan Books published Doug’s first book, Sacred Monsters, in 1996. It compares his own experiences as Pinhead with those of other actors, and examines the cultural and dramatic history of the mask.
Inducted into Fangoria’s Hall of Fame in 1989, Doug is a regular guest at conventions in the UK and the US. He served as a member of the international juries at the Oporto and Brussels Film Festivals and in 1996 he accepted the Best Actor award at the Fantafestival in Rome for his performance in Hellraiser: Bloodline. Doug’s own company Renegade Arts Entertainment are currently starting up a line of visual audio books called ‘Doug Bradley’s Spinechillers’ more of which can be found in the Special Events section of our website. Bu rhan yr actor Doug Bradley fel Pinhead yng nghyfres Hellraiser Clive Barker yn ei wneud yn bersonoliaeth eiconig ym maes y ffilm arswyd, gan ei wneud yn adnabyddus trwy’r byd. Yn sgil ei yrfa llwyddiannus yn y byd ffilm a’r theatr, bydd Dough yn ymddangos yn fyw ar y llwyfan yn ystod Abertoir i gyflwyno ei anerchiad arbennig ar effeithiau arswyd ac ar yr ychwanegiad diweddaraf i’w gyfres Spinechillers. Ganwyd Doug Bradley yn Lerpwl ym 1954 a chafodd ei addysg yn Ysgol Uwchradd Quarry Bank a Phrifysgol Lerpwl. Bu’n cyfarfod ac yn gweithio gyda Clive Barker pan ‘roedd y ddau yn yr ysgol. Ni chafodd unrhyw hyfforddiant actio ffurfiol ond ar ôl ymadael â’r Brifysgol dechreuodd weithio yn y theatr ymylol yn Lerpwl. Ar ôl ffurfio cwmni theatr a thwrio’r DU, yr Iseldiroedd a Gwlad Belg, bu Doug yn gweithio ar y llwyfan yn Llundain a De Lloegr, gan ymddangos mewn amrediad helaeth o rolau a chynyrchiadau. Ym 1986, gwahoddwyd Doug gan Barker i chwarae rhan pennaeth y Cenobites dirgel - a adnabyddir bellach fel Pinhead - yn y ffilm Hellraiser. Arweiniodd llwyddiant y ffilm at nifer o ffilmiau eraill sef Hellbound, Hell on Earth, a Bloodline. Ym 1988 bu’n cydweithio gyda Barker eto, gan ymddangos fel Lylesberg yn Nightbreed. Cyhoeddwyd llyfr cyntaf Doug, Sacred Monsters, gan Lyfrau Titan ym 1996. Mae’r llyfr yn cymharu ei brofiadau ei hun fel Pinhead gyda phrofiadau actorion eraill mewn ffilmiau arswyd o Lon Chaney Senior i’r presennol ac mae’n archwilio hanes diwylliannol a dramatig y masg. Fe’i derbyniwyd i Fangoria’s Hall of Fame ym 1989 ac mae’n westai rheolaidd mewn confensiynau yn y DU a’r UD. Bu’n aelod o’r rheithgorau rhyngwladol yng Ngwyliau Ffilm Oporto a Brwsel ac ym 1996 derbyniodd y wobr am Actor Gorau yn y Fantafestival yn Rhufain am ei berfformiad yn Hellraiser: Bloodline. Mae cwmni Doug sef Renegade Arts Entertainment yn sefydlu ar hyn o bryd cyfres o lyfrau awdio gweledol dan y teitl Doug Bradley’s Spinechillers - gwelir rhagor o fanylion yn yr adran Digwyddiadau Arbennig ar ein gwefan.

A classic of silent cinema, Nosferatu holds an extremely important place in the annuls of horror history as marking the earliest appearance of Bram Stoker’s creation, Dracula (albeit under a different name in order to evade copyright).
Doug Bradley graces the stage once more for his superb and comprehensive illustrated talk on the history of horror and fantasy make-up. A fun and interactive event that is a must for anyone with an interest in the genre.
We are delighted to welcome back pianist Paul Shallcross who will be providing a live musical score to accompany our screening.
Daw Doug Bradley i’r llwyfan unwaith eto i roi anerchiad cynhwysfawr ar hanes defnyddio colur mewn ffilmiau arswyd a ffantasi. Digwyddiad hwyliog a rhyngweithiol a fydd yn apelio at unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb yn y genre.
Un o glasuron y sinema fud, mae Nosferatu yn ffilm bwysig iawn yn hanes y ffilm arswyd gan iddi gynnwys ymddangosiad cyntaf creadigaeth Bram Stoker sef Dracula (er yn defnyddio enw gwahanol i osgoi hawlfraint).

Horror and Laughter
A Night at the Grand-Guignol
Sunday 8 November Dydd Sul 8 Tachwedd
6.45pm
The Théâtre du Grand-Guignol in Paris (1897-1962) achieved a legendary reputation as the ‘Theatre of Horror’, a venue displaying such explicit violence and blood-curdling terror that a resident doctor was employed to treat the numerous spectators who fainted each night. The Grand-Guignol specialised in one-act plays: every night at the Grand-Guignol featured a ‘hot and cold shower’ of terror plays interspersed with sex comedies performed by an ensemble of versatile performers and innovative special effects technicians. The result was an intense evening of theatre designed to terrify and titillate the spectator through a mixture of horror, laughter and the erotic. Horror and Laughter: A Night at the Grand-Guignol offers a rare and exciting opportunity to experience a recreation of this unique and influential theatre form and features three classic plays from the GrandGuignol repertoire.
Mae’n bleser gennym groesawu’n ôl y pianydd Paul Shallcross a fydd yn darparu sgôr gerddorol fyw i gydfynd â’r ffilm.

Warning: this performance includes bloody violence, mutilation, surgery and scenes of a sexual nature.
‘Roedd y Théâtre du Grand-Guignol ym Mharis (1897-1962) yn ddrwg-enwog fel Theatr Arswyd lle ‘roedd natur erchyll y sioeau a ddangoswyd yn golygu bod rhaid cyflogi meddyg preswyl i ofalu am yr aelodau niferus o’r gynulleidfa a lewygodd bob nos! Bu’r Grand-Guignol yn arbenigo mewn dramâu un-act: perfformwyd dramâu arswyd a chomedi gan griw o actorion aml-dalentog yn defnyddio effeithiau arbennig dyfeisgar. Y canlyniad oedd noson ddwys o theatr a anelwyd at ddychryn a gogleisio’r gwyliwr trwy gymysgedd o arswyd, chwerthin a’r erotig. Dyma gyfle prin a chyffrous i brofi ail-greu’r ffurf theatr unigryw a dylanwadol hon. Nodweddir tair drama glasurol o gyfnod y Grand-Guignol. you’ve never seen!
ADVENTURES OF A TWO MINUTE WEREWOLF – long forgotten 1985 ABC TV movie about Walt Cribbens, a young horror fan who suddenly turns into a Werewolf…no wonder it lasted under an hour!
By Tristan Thompson
H
Bikers, Blood & Breasts – WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS (1971). Classic exploitation flick - a gang of redneck dirt-gang bikers take refuge in a Satanic cult temple only to be cursed with a lycanthropic curse turning the hairy bikers into hairier werewolves. Bloody biker mayhem ensues.
I
CROSS OF THE 7 JEWELS – also know as WEREWOLF VS THE MAFIA - ultra obscure Italian 1987 Italian oddity – written & directed…and starring Marco Antonio Andolfi…the most sadistic and peculiar werewolf ever conceived this side of a full moon. Despite his hairy torso…his bottom half is half naked…watch out for the snapping teeth… and the flaccid penis!
J
Neil Marshall’s 2002 debut movie DOG SOLDIERS, rampant Squaddies Vs Werewolves is as stylish as it is intense. Captain Ryan (Sean Pertwee) leads his team into the remote Scottish highlands where they encounter a pack of savage werewolves – luckily the good ol’ British bulldog spirit is never far away – “cam an ave a go if ya fink you’re ‘ard enuff!” The Eighties saw the Werewolf given a new leash of box-office life with AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, THE HOWLING, TEEN WOLF and SILVER BULLET…this was quickly muzzled out with FULL MOON HIGH, MY MOM’S A WEREWOLF and countless whimpering HOWLING sequels! Free Burial – US flea-pit audiences were promised a free burial to anyone who died of fright during FRANKENSTEIN’S BLOODY TERROR (1967) – the first in, what was to become, a long running series of woolly werewolf classics starring Spanish horror superstar Paul Naschy (Jacinto Molina) as Count Waldermar Daninsky. Also known as Mark of the Wolf Man and Night Creatures. GINGER SNAPS – well-received Canadian werewolf movie from 2000 has death-obsessed teenager Ginger Fitzgerald attacked by the Beast of Bailey Downs and then becoming a bit hairy… a clever metaphor for puberty…two lame sequels followed…franchise failure!
K L M N
Hammer Horror does Werewolf...in glorious colour…Terrence Fisher style! 1960’s classic CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF has 22 years old Oliver Reed sprouting hair and snarling…and that’s before the pubs open. Banned in Spain until 1976, original cut in the UK & US. I Married a Werewolf – UK title of 60’s trash classic WEREWOLF IN A GIRL’S DORMITORY – a hairy predator stalks the corridors of a corrective school for wild teenage girls. A promotional “Do-It Yourself Werewolf Kit” was handed out to lucky patrons! DR JEKYLL AND THE WEREWOLF – 1971 – Waldemar Danisky’s (Paul Naschy) sixth outing as the Hombre Lobo and his ongoing quest to cure this werewolf affliction. Approaches Dr Jekyll (Jack Taylor) for help produces monstrous results. Exteriors filmed in swing 70’s London. Kangaroo Werewolves – I kid you not! Philippe Mora’s THE MARSUPIALS HOWLING 3 (1987) also managed to cram in werewolf nuns, a transformation during a ballet dance and Barry Humphries (Dame Edna). Nicole Kidman was originally set to star… LA LUPA MANNARA – better well known as WEREWOLF WOMAN – the notorious 1976 Italian exploitationer from sleaze specialist Rino Di Silvestro. Buxom Annik Borel, spending most of the running time naked, having become possessed by a distant deceased werewolf ancestor discovers a long dormant lust for sex & blood…in excessive measures…. MAD MONSTER (1942) – filmed in 5 days, given a certificate X…then banned in the UK for the next 10 years. Mad scientist George Zucco attempts to create an army of werewolves to fight the Nazis… he’s booted out of the medical profession…and now has a long-standing career with the NHS. Nazi Werewolves – Although the controversial Tarantino & Rodriguez attempt on delivering an authentic ‘Grindhouse’ (Planet Terror & Death Proof) experience was hopelessly lost on contemporary cinema audience - guest director Rob Zombie was in his eccentric element in directing his 1 minute 40 second faux trailer WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS “A brilliant achievement in motion picture history!”…screams the over-excited narrator.
O P Q
ORGY OF THE DEAD – 1965 sleaze epic scripted by beloved B-movie buffoon Ed D Wood Jr has a talking Mummy & Wolf Man exchanging comedic intervals between an assortment of erotic dances by half naked ghoul women. “ARE YOU HETROSEXUAL?” screamed the ads. Filmed in gorgeous SexiColour! Political Animal, a werewolf in the White House… surely not – it happened in 1973 in THE WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON – a lame goofy horror comedy starring Dean Stockwell as a Presidential press aide – not horrific….not funny! CURSE OF THE QUEERWOLF (1987), forgotten 80s spoof that potentially borders of the offensive within these ultra-sensitive PC times. Homophobic knuckle-head Larry Smalbut gets bitten in the backside by girl and turns into a ‘Dickenthrope’ – taking on stereotypical gay characteristics. Only a silver dildo can release him from the curse. Cameo by Forrest J Ackerman.

Teenage Tantrums – The unforgettably titled AIP shocker I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF (1957), filmed under the title Blood of the Werewolf earned over $2,000,000 in its first year. The iconic college-jacket clad teen-wolf reappeared the following year in HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER & the 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King’s IT. THE UNDYING MONSTER (1942) – 20th Century Fox’s answer to Universal’s THE WOLF MAN – an hour long yawn about a lycanthropic family curse – “ When the stars are bright on a frosty night – beware thy bane on the rocky lane” – insomnia cured…. VENUS THE NINJA – (1983) Second in the Wolf Devil Women trilogy - series of Hong King films based upon a woman (Pearl Cheung) raised by wolves and gains supernatural powers and battles zombies, warlords, witches and…mushrooms Whodunit – “This is a detective story and you are the detectives, but the question is not who the murderer is…but who is the Werewolf” – Amicus’ 1974 THE BEAST MUST DIE gives viewers a chance to just that in their 15 second “Werewolf Break” leading up to the movie’s climax. X-Rated – WEREWOLF IN A WOMAN’S PRISON (2006) – soft-core smut and hardcore gore are chain-buddies in this Werewolf WIP indie effort (Women in Prison). Fun & stupid…drink Aftershock while watching… Yeti – in his eighth outing as Waledmar Daniski – Paul Naschy stumbles upon a similar hairy beast in the mountains of Tibet in THE WEREWOLF & THE YETI (1975) – cannibalism and a particularly nasty skinning scene bequeathed this title to “ye olde” Video Nasty list in the 80s. ZAAT – released as BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z in 19721 – alright…it’s not a werewolf movie but it does feature a mad scientist turning into a rampaging killer fish monster!
Red Riding Hood – often quoted as a werewolf fable – intelligent horror film fans can prepare their thesis on artistically surreal COMPANY OF THE WOLVES (1984) while the rest of us crack a beer open and have fun with 1987’s FREAKY FAIRY TALES – a goofy horror anthology featuring ‘Little Red Runninghood’…gore, rubber monsters, junkie werewolf and a psychotic Goldilocks included! SILVER BULLET – Stylish 1985 adaptation of Stephen King’s Berni Wrightson illustrated novella Cycle of the Werewolf – Gary Busey stars as Uncle Red…the hard drinking reluctant werewolf hunter!
Tristan Thompson is the author of THE ILSA CHRONICLES (a study of the ILSA SHE WOLF OF THE SS movies) & BLAZING MAGNUMS (a review guide to classic Italian Cop-Crime movies of the 70s). In a remote mountain pass deep inside Romania, a medieval keep is taken over by the Nazis in order to better control the area. However after disturbing some of the mysterious artefacts, the German army soon finds itself up against an even darker force.
The sequel to one of the most intense, unpredictable and thrilling horror films of the decade, “The Descent: Part II” picks up immediately after the events depicted in the first film.
Raita, a Japanese businessman, just moved into an apartment building where his nextdoor neighbour is another guy named Raita. But as a private detective, what that other Raita does couldn’t be more different from a humble businessman’s way of life. One night, in the beginning of a bizarre series of murders, one of the private detective’s clients is killed and has her liver removed. The next victim has her kidneys removed, and the third her lungs. The two Raitas follow the clues and meet an eccentric painter, whose paints are rumoured to be made with human blood and organs...

Distraught, injured and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. France has produced some truly fantastic entries into the horror genre recently with films such as Martyrs, Inside and Frontieres. Now from executive producer Xavier Gens (Frontieres) comes another gut-wrenching and provocative film.
December 2001, a circus bear escapes from his cage and disappears in the mountain. At the same time, a trooper recruit, Arthur, accused of the murder of his friend, escapes capture into the forest. A raw and brutal allegory depicting a young man who breaks after being pushed to the limit.
On the outskirts of Paris, four corrupt cops go on a rampage to avenge the murder of one of their own by a group of ruthless gangsters, holed up in a condemned building. Once there, the officers’ personal vendetta turns into a nightmare when the building is invaded by bloodthirsty, cannibalistic creatures. Their world rapidly descends into chaos; the streets are filled with massive heaps of countless cadavers and the entire city is in flames. Alone and wounded, despite their mutual hatred, the gangsters and cops have no choice but join forces if they want to survive. They’ll have to make it down thirteen floors full of voracious creatures but the greatest threat lies elsewhere…

Mae’n fis Rhagfyr 2001, ac mae arth yn y syrcas yn dianc allan o’i gawell ac yn diflannu ar y mynydd. Ar yr un pryd mae Arthur, sy’n filwr ifanc a gyhuddir o lofruddio’i ffrind, yn dianc i fewn i’r fforest. Alegori greulon a ffiaidd yn portreadu dyn ifanc sy’n torri ar ôl cael ei wthio i’r eithaf, a’r ffordd y gall awdurdodau ymddwyn yn gwbl anfaddeuol a digyfaddawd.
Mae Ffrainc wedi cynhyrchu nifer o ffilmiau arswyd ffantastig yn ddiweddar gan gynnwys ffilmiau fel Martyrs, Inside a Frontieres. ‘Nawr daw ffilm wych bryfoclyd arall oddi wrth y cynhyrchydd adnabyddus Xavier Gens (Frontieres). Unwaith y maent yn cyrraedd yno mae ymgyrch personol y plismyn yn troi’n hunllef pan ymosodir ar yr adeilad gan greaduriaid erchyll, canibalaidd.

Friday 6 November 11.30am Dydd Gwener 6 Tachwedd Mitchell Parker lies dead on a morgue slab. In life, Mitchell served the low ranks of debt collectors, surrounded by all of the filth and scum that the world has to offer. He thought his luck was in when he stumbled across £100,000 cash hidden in the flat of one of his clients – a deadly mistake which will cost him his life. John Morghen (aka Giovanni Lombardo Radice) makes an appearance in this incredibly gory independent British feature, influenced by the Italian and British crime thrillers of the 1970s. Mae Mitchell Parker yn gorwedd yn farw yn y corffdy. Nid oedd ei fywyd yn un hapus a meddyliodd fod pethau’n gwella pan ddaeth ar draws £100,000 wedi’i guddio mewn fflat un o’i gwsmeriaid - ond yn anffodus, arweiniodd hyn at ei farwolaeth. Memento meets Wolf Creek set against the backdrop of the English countryside. Matt Sadler suffers from loss of memory and retraces his footsteps back to a farm deep in the countryside. There he meets Calham, a farmer, and after piecing together the reasons behind his memory loss, descends into a nightmare world of abduction and slaughter.
“Resurrecting the Street Walker” is a faux documentary following James Parker, an ambitious wannabe film-maker who happens upon an abandoned horror film in the vaults of the London production company for whom he is working. The discovery of this unfinished “video nasty” sparks an escalating chain of more and more shocking events...
The Farm is a micro-budget horror film set in Ireland, and inspired by 1970s horror films, as well as the Dogme movement. It tells the story of a young couple on the run from drug dealing gangsters, who discover that danger can lurk in even the most unexpected of places.
Mae Memento yn cyfarfod â Wolf Creek yn erbyn cefndir y Lloegr wledig. Mae Matt Sadler yn colli’i gof ac mae’n ceisio ailfyw’r gorffennol trwy fynd yn ôl i fferm anghysbell yng nghefn gwlad. Yno mae’n cyfarfod â Calham, sy’n ffermwr, ac ar ôl ystyried y rhesymau am ei broblemau cof, mae’n disgyn i fyd hunllefus o herwgipio a llofruddiaeth.
Mae’r ffilm hon yn adrodd hanes James Parker, gwneuthurwr ffilm uchelgeisiol, sy’n digwydd dod ar draws hen ffilm arswyd ar safle’r cwmni cynhyrchu yn Llundain lle mae’n gweithio. Vincent Price hams it up as a scientist researching the effects of fear on the human body. He discovers the existence of a creature that attaches itself to the spinal chord every time people experience fear, ‘The Tingler’, that can only be stopped when the victim screams.
In a place between pleasure and pain, there is sensual experience beyond limits. And in a world between paradise and purgatory, there is a horror that feeds the souls of evil. Welcome to the singular vision of Clive Barker and his landmark horror opus, Hellraiser.
William Castle was the master of gimmicks, and The Tingler was no exception. Filmed in ‘Percepto’, the tagline of “Scream for your lives!” was the way audience members would interact with the film. The original release featured electrified or vibrating seats to literally shock the audience, and employed fake nurses outside the cinema in case anyone fainted during the show! In one scene, the lights go out on the screen and Vincent Price can be heard instructing the audience to scream. We actively encourage everyone to take part in the spirit of this film, and scream for your lives!

For those of you who remember last year’s fabulous excesses of Japanese splatter (Tokyo Gore Police and Machine Girl), you’ll be pleased to know that we’ve got some more! Fresh off the production line comes this heart-warming tale of love and jealousy between a high school boy and the two rival girls who want him to be their lover. Caught between the two, how will they fight for his affections? Did I say one was a vampire? And one stitched together from dead tissue? Maybe the sight of skin being ripped off screaming Japanese schoolgirls, arms stitched to heads being used as helicopter blades, and the nail biting tension of who will win the wrist-cutting competition will whet your appetite? A truly original, completely mad and absolutely over the top gorefest… not to be missed!

If there was space, we would have shown more, but the ones we have selected are an excellent representation of what is possible outside of the studio system. In this strand, we hope to be discovering new and upcoming filmmakers who have the potential to make a name for themselves in the horror industry. At last year’s screening at Abertoir, low-budget zombie movie Colin was picked up by a sales agent and became the talk of the Cannes Film Festival. It is discoveries like these that we hope to bring to audiences, and by screening what we have chosen here, we aim to encourage independent film-making and create the opportunity for the future stars of horror to be discovered. We dedicate “Make Your Own Damn Movie!” to Lloyd Kaufman, who saw our potential as an independent festival, and hope to keep up Lloyd’s tradition.
