It’s an upbeat creative summer this year at the Arts Centre with a range of exciting possibilities to appeal to all tastes and ages. From the UK dance and music sensation of our summer musical Flashdance to Flown, a daring and beautifully choreographed ariel theatre performance. We’re kicking off our shoes and getting outdoors with our annual Mid Mad music extravangza and our first ever community fun day and picnic with creative activities and performances including MEET THE GIANT DINOSAUR! and a spectacular acrobatic show for adults and children alike from circus specialists Acrojou with their moving wheel. Later in August we’ve a doublebill of Shakespeare performed outdoors too, so grab your picnic and a blanket and enjoy the unique experience. The radical Craft Exhibition continues the theme of creativity whilst the exhibition Maid / Mother / Crone celebrates two local artists. Not forgetting a feast of performances from our talented youth and community groups, young performers with Musicfest and lots of opportunities to have fun and learn new skills with our creative summer courses. There’s plenty more music and drama to enjoy – all the details are in the following pages with extra info on our website too.

Yn hwyrach ym mis Awst mae gennym fil dwbwl o Shakespeare a berfformir allan yn yr awyr agored hefyd, felly trefnwch bicnic a blanced a mwynhewch brofiad unigryw! Mae’r Arddangosfa Grefftau radicalaidd yn parhau’r thema o greadigedd tra bod yr arddangosfa Morwyn / Mam / Hen Wrach yn dathlu gwaith dau artist lleol. Heb anghofio gwledd o berfformiadau gan ein grwpiau ieuenctid a chymuned talentog, perfformwyr ifanc MusicFest a digonedd o gyfleoedd i gael hwyl a dysgu sgiliau newydd gyda’n cyrsiau haf creadigol. The 2017 ICF features ceramicists from all over the world, it is a unique opportunity to see notable international ceramicists demonstrate their techniques and discuss their ideas and processes. MusicFest will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with its largest ever festival of concerts, courses, talks, showcases and fringe performances. Amongst the many highlights this year are: the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Cellos with Nicholas Jones and Kari Ravnan; the Dvorak Piano Quintet with the Sacconi Quartet and Tom Poster followed by the Mendelssohn Octet in which the Sacconis will be joined by the Solem Quartet. Orion Orchestra’s Wednesday concert features Elgar’s wonderful Introduction and Allegro Op 47 and Brahms’s powerful Double Concerto for violin and cello. The final concert features Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No 23 in A with Tom Poster as soloist. The 30th anniversary will feature an exhibition of memorabilia, stories and performances including a performance by the Johannes Trio. FREE fringe performances will be taking place throughout the town offering traditional, folk, classical music and jazz with storytelling including Elfen, Ffynnon, Sianed Jones, Chris Grooms, Peter Stevenson, Deuair, Ailsa Mair Hughes and Harriet Earis. Working on some small scale landscape motifs and then building up to a larger format on canvas, you will explore aspects of composition, abstraction, texture and colour. We are pleased to announce that in 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre will be joining UK Music’s Rehearsal Space scheme. The scheme aims to assist young people across the UK access the right equipment and expertise to help them make music. Oliver Morris Director of Education & Skills for UK Music - said: “I remember growing up in Aber and the problems we used to have trying to find places to rehearse. I’m really glad that UK Music can help my hometown by providing equipment to revitalise the Arts Centre’s rehearsal space and in turn help young local musicians to follow their passion. We are also keen to integrate the equipment into worthwhile projects locally such as the great work being done by Chris Robinson and the Ceredigion Youth Service and Debra Croft with the Summer University and are of course are looking forward to getting involved in workshops with young musicians in the space ourselves.” Watch this space for more news! We run an extensive programme of activities for schools including discussion and practical Gallery Education sessions for all key stages working with our exhibition programme; practical and theory Ceramics sessions run in conjunction with the University Ceramics collection; Art Days where schools can bring up to 100 children to the Arts Centre to take part in a variety of activities and shorter sessions designed specifically for Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils. A free session for theatre studies students with Arts Centre creative and technical staff to explain how theatre works both front and backstage.
Current fform associates include: Gwyn Emberton Dance will be working in the theatre on their new touring contemporary dance work Raft, to premier in October prior to a UK tour. Buddug Verona James is developing a new play during the summer, Frank, with a work in progress sharing in the Studio. We will be supporting Chris Harris in the development of a new script based on a 19th century novelette as part of the 14-18 WWI anniversary. Lighthouse Theatre have a short residency to revive their immersive promenade experience of Aberystwyth Mon Amour with Menter Aberystwyth. We are partners with Theatr Na Nog in their planned new production of a musical play based on Operation Julie, and with Leeway Productions in their 30 Minute Musicals project. The Experimental Performance Group continue their research and experimentation into new forms of theatre and performance. The Arts Centre’s Creu Cymru dance buddies are Gwyn Emberton, Eddie Ladd and Sean Tuan John.

The Arts Centre is situated at the heart of the campus of Aberystwyth University. The turning onto campus is from the A487 as you head North out of the main Aberystwyth town centre and is well signposted. Car parking is free from 5pm in the evenings and all weekends. Parking is reserved next to the main entrance approach for drivers with limited mobility. Two spaces are also available at the rear of the theatre, with level access into the main foyer. Access at ground level to main foyer and box office, by lift up to the theatre foyer and by stair lift down to the lower level. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome. Toilet facilities are accessible on all levels except the lower foyer. Hearing loops are installed in the Great Hall, Theatre and Cinema.
